DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CAOn Wednesday, the city of Desert Hot Springs saluted their hometown heroes with their sixth annual Veteran’s Day Celebration. Once again, the Community and Cultural Affairs Commission were responsible of putting together this annual event. The Rev. Paul Miller of the Christ Lutheran Church started things off with an invocation. “War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things,” he said, reciting the Air Force Handbook. “With Fort Hood fresh in our mind, it’s only appropriate that this day we reflect on the sacrifices that these men and women made for us.” The Mayor, Yvonne Parks, gave her opening afterwards. “It’s an honor to be here and an honor to see how many of you have shown up to honor our veterans,” she stated, echoing the same remarks she gave at a previous engagement at the Desert Memorial
Park in Cathedral City. “Veterans have always brought with them a wealth of experience once they return to their communities. Many become leaders and role models. Let us thank them every day for our freedom.” Colonel William F. Mullen III from the United States Marine Corps was the guest speaker this year. He has served in Operation Desert Storm and again in Iraq, in addition to having a master’s degree in National Security. “I’m humbled to be a part of the Armed Forces of the greatest nation on Earth,” he said, before reciting some of the military’s history during his speech. “I appreciate being out here, to remember veterans of all areas. My advice to future veterans is, please continue to serve. It’s very important.” Sean Keffer, a local singer, closed the ceremony with his rendition of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA”.

s i t a h w o S the plan?
BY JOE MCKEE
For the last few weeks some of my conservative friends have had a real problem with President Obama taking some time to review the situation in Afghanistan. Never mind that this part of the war on terror had been ignored by the previous administration for years. So what if President Obama has already increased the number of troops by 50%. It has only been 8 years since we invaded the country. So what’s the problem? Send in more troops. Heck, send in a 100,000. How about 1,000,000? Here is the problem. Sending in troops is not a plan. It is a tactic to execute a plan. I am thankful we are reviewing our goals. We have been involved in a few conflicts that have missed this point. Viet Nam is the best example. But, let me discuss only our involvement in Afghanistan in this discussion. At present we have a real mess in Afghanistan. The central government

is run by a “President” who was an oil company executive before our invasion. He was best known for bringing the Taliban to Texas to negotiate a deal for an oil pipeline through their country. The central government controls only Kabul. The rest of the country is controlled by a collection of warlords and the Taliban. At present, it is estimated that 20 Al Qaeda are in Afghanistan. Only 100 are in Pakistan. Our troops and our NATO allies outnumber the Taliban by 12 to 1. The present government is corrupt and not trusted by the population. Both the ambassador to the country and many others in the CIA, and the State Department feel we should not send additional troops. But, we can’t think about it. A general wants more troops. Here is my problem. We did not invade Afghanistan to build a nation. We wanted to capture or kill the people responsible for 9/11. We sort of blew that when we allowed our Afghan allies to take

the lead during the fighting in Tora Bora. Now, we have a real problem. We are there. We have started schools for girls. This created a new sport in Afghanistan. Taliban throwing acid on school girls who want an education. The Taliban want to revert to the 15th century. How can we exit and not abandon the children and women in Afghanistan? My wife, who is generally a pacifist, thinks we have two choices. Kill all the Taliban, or repatriate all the women and children who want to leave. Do we continue to stay in Afghanistan for decades? We have not answered one obvious question. What is our goal? In military terms, what is victory? Without a goal we cannot be successful. Without a plan we will not reach that goal. Thank goodness we have a President who thinks before he acts. We would have been in much better shape now if the previous administration had done the same.

Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneer Palace • Desert Local News • November 15, 2009
Leon Russell with Brad Merce Story by Lisa Robyn Lawrence Photos by Catherine Jardine WOW! Leon Russell, on stage at Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneer Palace with our local fave radio celeb-rocker, Brad Mercer and his band The Acquitted opening the night’s performance!! What a magical night under the canopy of the exquisite star-sprinkled sky. Brad Mercer and his band The Acquitted started the night rockin’ with several original songs — “Just Wanna Hear My Songs on the Radio” followed by “Playin’ With My Head” and even a song recently written by Mercer’s son, “You Make Me Be.” The audience was clapping and moving to the music. Brad’s harmonies with the lovely Cy, blended oh-so-well. The band was in great form and the audience showed their appreciation with loud applause, hoots and cheers. Brad’s new band is composed of some great local talent. Tim Kramer on guitar, Paul Villalobos from The Myx on bass, James St. James on drums from the band Petting Zoo. After a very brief intermission, long, flowing white hair under a cowboy hat and long white beard with dark shades, Leon Russell casually sauntered on to the stage with his band and the crowd went wild. Who would have thought that such a megastar of rock and roll could be seen in such an intimate and breathtaking setting? The setting of Pappy and Harriet’s is not just a colorful, funky and welcoming watering hole, bar and grill but it is the gateway to historic Pioneertown, Calif. For those of you who don’t know about Pioneertown, check our article coming soon in our travel section. In a nutshell, it was originally built as a movie set for Western movies in the 1940s by a group of famous Hollywood investors. (I can’t tell all here, so you’ll have to check back with us for the particulars our photos and more historic information.) Back to the concert, Russell just kept hitting us with so many of his songs that we couldn’t help getting up and moving
to the music. Leon started the night at a feverish pitch with a “Jumpin’ Jack Flash/ Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” medley. He just rolled into song after song — “Kansas City,” “Lady Blue,” “Georgia on My Mind,” “Wild Horses,” a cover of Lennon/McCartney’s “I’ve Just Seen A Face,” the classic Leon Russell “A Song For You,,” ”Back to the Island” and on and on. There was even an encore of much more Leon songs. Russell’s band of pumping musicians included, Jackie Wessel on vocals and smoking up the bass, Chris Simmons on vocals and burnin’ the guitar, Brian Lee on vocals and unmercifully wailing’ on keys and Brandon Holder lighting the drums on fire under the desert night sky. Leon was just untouchable on electric piano/ synthesizer/keys and throwing every song he had at us, and then some more. Each band member had the opportunity to do a solo and, wow, could they each hold their own, both vocally and as master musicians.
Brad Me
Two Leon Russell fans from the Coachella Valley, Michelle Bergeron and Lorraine Hawking, were exploding with excitement. Bergeron said (about the concert) “Un-freakin’ believable … what a treat to see such a great legend in such an intimate setting. Best concert. It was such a great venue to be under the stars … it doesn’t get any better than that! I’ll come back again for more!” It was too bad that the evening had to come to an end. All I could hear from the audience was that they wanted more. We love you Leon! Thank you man. C’mon back now, ‘ya hear? Brad and the Acquitted, we want to see more of you guys too! A huge thank you to Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace for bringing us this royally good show. For more about Leon Russell and Brad Mercer at Pioneertown, go to www. PalmSpringsGuides.com

ita Moreno Still Charms Story and photos by Pat Krause The seventh annual Opening Night Concert was held at the Annenberg Theater at the Palm Springs Art Museum on Sat., Nov. 7. The incomparable Rita Moreno was the Guest Artist for this event. Rita Moreno has won Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy Awards. She holds this distinction with great pride. She won the hearts of many in 1961 when she played the role of Anita in “West Side Story.” She continues to have a great career in movies, stage and TV, and in between that she travels with her one-woman show. She apologized to the crowd, as she said she had a bit of a problem with her voice but was not contagious. However, I could not tell there was a problem as she mesmerized the audience with her wide range of music. She can sing most any type of music and do it well. She sang “New Ways to Dream” and “With One Look” from “Sunset Boulevard,” “Breezin’ Along with the Breeze” and many other songs both from movies and stage shows. She is also known as a great Oscar-winning actress. The Annenberg Theater Council of the Palm Springs Art Museum sponsored this benefit performance. Of course, this great artist played to a sold out venue. A fabulous reception followed the concert on the Museum’s main floor with some of the tastiest food and desserts. Rita Moreno first met many of the Museum sponsors, Palm Springs city officials, underwriters and Museum staff in the “Green Room” for a meet-and-greet gathering. She changed from her concert gown and came to the reception to meet with all the guests attending. She posed and smiled that great smile for the many photos with her fans. A special surprise started the evening when Wells Fargo Foundation presented a check for $100,000 to Harold J. Meyerman, Jr. for the Art Museum programs. A few of the upcoming events in November are heart throb Lorenzo Lamas on Sat., Nov. 21, and Melissa Manchester on Nov. 28. The Squeeze Is On 27 BY HANK HOHENSTEIN Our year, 2009, is almost over and it has been a journey of uncertainty. Most Americans have been challenged in ways they never expected. There is a level of discomfort and frustration that permeates our daily lives. More significantly, many Americans are fearful and that is unusual. Historically, Americans are gregarious, generous, compassionate and hard working. It would be calamitous, on a worldwide basis, if we were to dampen those attributes. Within this sense of malaise we are heading into a host of extraordinarily special days on our calendar: Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanza, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Virtually every one of us will participate in some combination of those celebrations and traditions. Perhaps some families may hit the ‘Pick – Six – Combo’ and celebrate all of them. What one attitude or sentiment will allow each of us to bridge the spiritual spectrum of those holidays? What one deep, internal reality can we enliven within ourselves to make those days appropriate for their deepest spiritual meanings? Like begets like, meaning our thoughts always preceded our actions and our desires. If we think discouraging thoughts we soon manifest physical signs of discouragement. If we want to be loved,
we first have to think we are lovable. If we want to be loved, we first have to think loving thoughts about others. Spiritually overcoming a series of discouraging events is not easy.
My prayer for each of you, as we come first to Thanksgiving, is that we are thankful for all of His gifts and that we share them with each other, beginning with love. Overcoming feelings of being unloved is also a huge spiritual undertaking. Where do we start? How do we take that first spiritual step? The beginning has to be internal before it can become external. Our internal beginning has to be with self-examination, a prayer for wisdom and knowing we are loved. As I was preparing this piece, Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, arrived at the Marriott Desert Springs in Palm Desert. He was here to talk about the dramatic
Former DHS City Councilman Hank Hohenstein turnaround at Starbucks this past year. A year or so ago many had been saying that the ‘Age of Starbucks’ was over. Schultz claimed the gains of the past year can be attributed to one thing, love. He recognized that the coffee chain had drifted from its core value of being a people business. He also recognized that it was important to acknowledge and verbalize that the company had made some mistakes. Notice the linkage of his thoughts: love – people – mistakes. Perhaps that is why so many pastors hang out at Starbucks. Please allow me to share one last thought that is foundational to the above holidays. There is a very inspirational story in the Bible, found in Acts 10:1 - 11:18. We find many notable verses in the telling of this historic event, but the truly significant are Acts 10:34-35,”Then Peter began to speak, ‘I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism, but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.’” This is a message of love – people – mistakes. As our thoughts go before action this maybe a place to begin, as we remember, like begets like. My prayer for each of you, as we come first to Thanksgiving, is that we are thankful for all of His gifts and that we share them with each other, beginning with love. To be continued

City Welcomes Cabot Yerxa Elementary School
LESLIE ANDREWS DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CAThe Chamber of Commerce along with the City of Desert Hot Springs welcomed Cabot Yerxa Elementary School with a special ribbon cutting on Tuesday. The school actually opened on August 21st, before parking spaces were even available. Principal Mike Grein stated that teachers had to park across the street while at least 200 construction workers were still perfecting the school grounds. So far, there has been no reports of graffiti vandalism since the school opened. However, there have been a few skateboarders loitering around off school-hours. Also present were Mayor Yvonne Parks, the entire city council and Cabot’s Museum President Michael O’Keefe. It was the suggestion of many to name the school after Cabot Yerxa, who was the founder of Desert Hot Springs. “Yerxa would be so happy to have a school named after him,” said Shari Stewart, Palm Springs Unified School District board member. Parks was also invited to the school’s naming committee meetings. “It’s very easy to say,”
she said. “This is going to be a miracle hill committee and we will redevelop this area for art, culture and tourism. This school is prettier than the high school I went to.” After the ceremonies took place, the public got a chance to view the school grounds and take a peek inside their classrooms. “We’re thrilled,” said O’Keefe. “Cabot was the guiding light of Desert Hot Springs. He was the first president of the city’s improvement committee. He also founded the first library here. This is something that will inspire people.” “I look to the future and it’s only uphill from here. I look forward to bettering the programs for the community and our school from this point on,” said Principal Grein. Mr. Yerxa built his home, which became the museum in 1913, after homesteading 165 acres in what is now Desert Hot Springs. He was also known for discovering hot water along the San Andreas Fault nearby. He died in 1965 at the age of 83.

O S Y L T H AND RIG BY MATT WEYUKER Former DHS Mayor Matt Weyuker Well, folks, it looks like our so-called US House of “Representatives” has again given us the well-known shaft. As you probably know, they voted 220 to 215 to approve Speaker Pelosi’s version of Obamacare, a massive 1990 page enormously expensive $1.1 Trillion “healthcare reform” bill. In voting “Yes,” many unsafe Democrat House members committed “reelection suicide” because they ignored the will of “We The People.” Over 62% of voters who were polled said NO to any “healthcare reform” – and more than 70% of seniors said NO also. The ill-conceived and debt-ridden measure is much too radical for most Americans. The Obama-Pelosi duo, literally “bribed” some of their opposition that led to the close House win. Prior to the vote, the American Medical Association (AMA) had been told that its doctors were going to face 21% cuts in their Medicare reimbursements – they “settled” for 5%, and endorsed the bill. AARP, the group that supposedly advocates for seniors, became disenchanted with the Medicare Advantage plans that had previously been approved by Congress in 2004, because it cut into their $600 Million (over ½ AARP’s $1.1 Billion budget) “sponsored” Medigap
plans profits. They agreed to sell out seniors by supporting the Obama-Pelosi bill if it contained draconian reductions ($175 Billion) in these Medicare managedcare plans used by 20% of seniors. The bill’s passage will have an expensive affect upon the elderly and other Medicare users – and AARP will profit at their expense.
details of the loan 18 months later.
The drug companies sold out for an $80 Billion reduction of the future decade’s $3 Trillion worth of prescription drug sales under Obama-Pelosicare’s “healthcare reform” bill. The opposition was punished. Insurers and manufacturers of durable medical equipment, like wheelchairs and prosthetic devices face higher tax rates and other financial losses under ObamaPelosicare. Abortions and “illegals” will be covered under this costly measure.
The most outrageous aspect of this bill is found in Sections 7201 and 7203. 7201 reads, “FELONY WILLFUL EVASION (of buying health insurance) IS PUNISHABLE BY A FINE OF TO $250,000 AND/OR IMPRISONMENT OF UP TO 5 YEARS.” 7203 states, “MISDEMEANOR WILLFUL FAILURE TO PAY IS PUNISHABLE BY A FINE OF UP TO $25,000 AND/OR IMPRISONMENT OF UP TO 1 YEAR.” Can you imagine that in the United States of America that people could face prison for not buying health insurance?
Let’s do something that many Congressmen didn’t – why don’t we cover the “highlights” of this misbegotten “healthcare reform” legislation? Section 224, on page 118, provides that 18 months after the bill becomes law, the Health and Human Services Secretary will decide what a “qualified plan” covers and how much you will be legally required to pay for it. That’s like a banker telling you to sign loan papers, then filling in the
Section 59b on pages 297-299 mandates that when we file our tax returns, we must include proof that we’re in a “qualified” plan – if not, we face thousands of dollars in fines. Oh yes, “illegals” are exempt from this “requirement.”
Senator Graham (R-SC) announced that Obama-Pelosicare is “dead-onarrival” in the Senate, because there are 33 Senators up for reelection in 2010, and they know that many Americans are getting fed up with the President and Congress ignoring the will of “We The People.” – And Rightly So.

Interview by Lisa Robyn Lawrence Photos courtesy of Lainie Kazan and Tierney Sutton I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Lainie Kazan, the multitalented singer, actress, comedienne. Lainie is appearing for one performance at the Annenberg Center at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, near Palm Springs, Calif. She will be appearing in a double bill with Tierney Sutton for their first ever performance. Lainie told me this all came about when, “An agent named James Melton called me to see if I would do a double bill, with the concept of ‘Dueling Divas.’ I said to him, ‘I worked with an opera singer named James Melton.’ his answer was, ‘I would be his nephew.’ That was so sweet for me,” she explained. Lainie, in her charming and engaging style, had to tell me about a telephone conversation she had with Tierney Sutton when this concept was posed. Lainie explained that the performance was pitched by Melton as being billed as the “Dueling Divas.” She explained that her conversation with Sutton created a friendly volley between them. Lainie posed the idea of “Dueling Divas,” to Tierney and the conversation went something along these lines: Lainie: “How do you feel about the performance being billed at ‘Dueling Divas’?” Tierney: “I don’t know that I feel comfortable with the title ‘Diva’.” Lainie: “Well, maybe you should grow into it!” Tierney: “Well, maybe you should grow out of it!” A gauntlet of sorts has been thrown, perhaps? Lainie said she immediately liked the plucky wit of Tierney and knew that this could be a very interesting challenge and an enjoyable performance. Lainie
explained that they each have different ways of presenting the same song and this will be showcased in each of their individual performances. The two “Divas” also have agreed to perform a couple of songs together as well. Lisa Lawrence: “What songs do you enjoy performing the most? Torch songs or up-tempo?” Lainie: “My singing is my chance to express my life experiences and some of the pain, so definitely torch songs, although my performance will include some up-tempo songs as well.” Lisa Lawrence: “The material being performed, was this chosen by composer or by the individual song?” Lainie: “My love of each of Harold Arlin’s songs, classic standards, and even a few contemporary songs will be part of the show.” Lisa Lawrence: “How would you describe the theme of this performance?” Lainie: “Two very talented singers, really interesting and different in their delivery showcasing their unique styles.” Lisa Lawrence: “Is this new material or favorite material?” Lainie: “We will each perform for part of the evening and do the songs we each choose. We will even perform a couple of the some of the same songs, but differently, for instance, the audience will get to each of our unique arrangements of songs like ‘Paper Moon’.” Lisa Lawrence: “Is there a little-known fact about you or something that you would like your audience to know about you, your passion or areas of interest?” Lainie: “One passion is co-raising my granddaughter. I also sit on several
boards, Young Musician’s Foundation, AIDS Project L.A. and B’nai Brith. I used to love to ride horses. I love animals you know; I have several dogs and cats.” Lisa Lawrence: “Any new plays, movies, albums or a book coming up?” Lainie: “Oh yes, I’m in New York, right now, for the premiere of a movie I am in called, ‘Oy Vey, My Son is Gay.’ It was just released at the Director’s Guild Theater in Manhattan. Excellent movie, and it was very well received. It opened Friday, Nov. 6, 2009. There is another movie I am in that is to be released sometime in the near future called, ‘The Christmas Movie,’ but it was just re-named ‘Expecting Mary.’ The movie Stars Elliott Gould, Linda Gray, Lainie Kazan, Cloris Leachman, Della Reese, Olesya Rulin, Cybill Shepherd, Gene Simmons and Fred Willard. This is a very sweet and touching movie about a young, pregnant teenager and her search for the meaning of love ... In fact a very talented woman, Kim Waltrip, who is a Coachella Valley resident, produced it.” For those who live in or visit Los Angeles, Lainie will be appearing for three nights Nov. 19-21 at The Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, Calif. Don’t miss out on an unforgettable night of blues, jazz, Broadway favorites and pop hits. Their styles may differ yet both share the same passion for music and are sure to delight the audience. “Dueling Divas” Lainie Kazan and Tierney Sutton (One performance only) The Annenberg Center at the Eisenhower Medical Center campus 39-000 Bob Hope Drive Rancho Mirage, California 7:30 p.m., Sunday Nov. 22, 2009 Space is Limited so reserve early For tickets, contact Susan Cook (760) 341-7323 This program is presented by The Rancho Mirage Cultural Commission.

It’s Coffee Time with John Benoit LESLIE ANDREWS DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CAOn December 1st, John Benoit will take the oath of office to serve as one of Riverside County’s Supervisors. Until then, he still sits as the State Senator for the 37th District, which serves Desert Hot Springs. Citizens and city leaders got a chance to sit down with Senator Benoit at the community center at Guy Tedesco Park Wednesday morning to talk about all the achievements he has made during his one year of service as Senator and what he will bring to Riverside County as a Supervisor. Amongst the topics that were discussed were about California’s water deal, as well as how it relates to Salton Sea restoration. People were concerned about water rates being raised, so this was also talked about with Benoit. Nancy Wright, board president of the Mission Springs Water District along with district manager Arden Wallum were also discussing the city’s sewer situation. Benoit didn’t believe that it was fair for other people to share the costs of the sewers.
The State’s budget is also a major concern to everybody. “The revenue situation for the state of California is bad,” Benoit said. “Until we get to the bottom, we will have continuing problems with the state’s budgeting revenue.” Unfortunately, the state has had to borrow from its cities and counties during the budget crisis. “The overall thing is to get the water deal done, because it is going to be horrible again next year. How bad it’s going to be? It’s bad but it’s not the end of the world. Desert Hot Springs is taking a set of hits,” Benoit added.
Who would replace him? It is likely that Bill Emerson of Hemet will run for the Senate seat being vacated by Benoit. “He’s a great guy,” he said. “He will be a face you will come to know and we will work very closely together.”
By waiting until December 1st to take office in the Board of Supervisors, Benoit will save the state a million dollars. How is because his resignation would fall within the six month period before a special election could be held, which
Benoit was chosen personally by the late Roy Wilson, who has served on the Board of Supervisors since 1994. Wilson talked about it with Benoit months before his sudden death and long before his illness was made public.
would be in June of 2010.

A Playoffs’ Payoff For The Local ROTC
Eric Pontius auctioned off Rick Daniels Blazer
21
Daniels ended up buying it back at a price of $283.00. DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CAPlayoffs’, Desert Hot Springs’ premier sports bar, managed to raise over $1000 for the local Junior ROTC on Tuesday night, hosting a birthday party celebrating over two and a quarter centuries of the United States Marine Corps. Lt. Col. Lewke from the Desert Hot Springs High School’s JROTC program was happy to be the recipient of the funds. “I’ve known Eric Pontius for a few years, he is a Veteran of the Gulf War,” he said. “Every year we celebrate the Marine Corps birthday on the 10th of November. Eric is a generous fellow.” The Lieutenant Colonel also has an oldest daughter who did two tours of duty in Iraq and his son-in-law is currently serving in Afghanistan. For a period of three hours, all money raised by the bar will go to the program. In addition, Pontius, the bar’s owner, also auctioned off items nailed to his walls (TV sets, Sports Jerseys, Photos, etc) and City Manager Rick Daniels auctioned off his blazer sports jacket. However, Daniels ended up buying it back at a price of $283.00.

This is the second time that Playoff’s Sports Bar held this event, which also raised about a thousand dollars for the same program the previous year.

Dedication and Party In Tedesco Park Donna Lozano, members of the city council and Chief Williams
BY STAFF
DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA-
work as a team to continue improving the community.”
City officials gathered together on Saturday to dedicate the opening of the new Henry Vellore Lozano Community Center, along with a very busy “Party in the Park” at the Guy Tedesco Park, which was sponsored and organized by local churches in Desert Hot Springs.
Donna Lozano, Henry’s mother, said, “Henry was an inspiration to the youth of this community, He dedicated his life to upholding the freedom of the United States, and looked forward to continuing his service to his community when he returned from duty.”
In addition to the new community center, the city celebrated the opening of the Desert Hot Springs Neighborhood Office.
Henry Vellore Lozano was a Desert Hot Springs resident who was murdered on December 19, 2001, by a local gang member at the age of 20. He is remembered as a religious, loyal and devoted son to his family, fiancé and friends. He volunteered and joined the U.S. Marine Corps, and he was in the process of pursuing a career in public service as a California Highway Patrol or police officer after his tour in the Marines.
“Tedesco Park belongs to the residents of this community, and we want to see families and youth using the basketball courts, skateboard park [it’s a BMX bike park], and playground every day,” said Mayor Yvonne Parks in a press release. “The community center will be available for family functions, neighborhood meetings and youth activities. It belongs to the residents, and we encourage them to use it. The second building in the Park will serve as a Police Neighborhood Office that will provide officers and residents the chance to meet in the neighborhood and
The party had vendors from health department services and also provided free barbecue lunch to a large number of people from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There was also live music (with a Christian theme) as well as plenty of BMX biking for the kids.

It’s Monte Carlo Night at the Elks’ Lodge BY STAFF DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CAThe Desert Hot Springs Elks Lodge really outdid themselves this time, with Monte Carlo night on Saturday evening. There was charity gambling (all with play money) offered, with games like Wheel of Fortune, Craps, Roulette, Texas Hold’em and Blackjack. With their winnings, people were able to win prizes at the auction, which was held at the close of the meeting. A total of over $3000 was offered in prizes. The goal to sell 100 raffle tickets was broken as well. Plus, there was a buffet dinner offered, along with plenty of desserts, including brownies from local community activist Dot Reed. The event was all for a good cause, to bring its kitchen back to code and to make improvements to it, so that Elks members and future charity events could be better served.

Entrepreneur, Gets Star-Studded Tribute
LESLIE ANDREWS PALM SPRINGS, CASir Alfred DiMora, a Palm Springs resident and automobile designer, received a star-studded tribute along with the 325th star along the Palm Springs Walk of Stars on Sunday. DiMora, 53, is well known amongst Hollywood stars for designing custombuilt automobiles. Amongst his celebrity friends who paid tribute to him were Larry Wilcox (CHIPS), Steve Rossi, Bo Hopkins (American Graffiti) and Ernest Borgnine (McHale’s Navy) in front of the Palm Canyon Theatre, where his star was placed. “I’ve been in the custom car building industry since I was 19, and I build custom motorcycles as well. If you need something expensive, I’m your guy,” said DiMora to Desert Local News. Borgnine, 92, was also honored to celebrate this occasion. “It’s a doggone good thing that the people of Palm Springs decided to give this man a star along the walk of fame,” he said. “We’ve
always had a warm relationship and he’s worthy of everything this man could want. He’s a genius when it comes to building cars on computers.” Wilcox joked about how DiMora was originally cast in CHIPS as “Ponch” but instead wound up with Erik Estrada. “He’s contributed with all of his entrepreneurial opportunities. He’s the kind of man who thinks big,” he said. DiMora was knighted by the Pope in Vatican City, therefore given the title of “Sir” by the Catholic Church. His passion for cars began at the age of 19 after he worked in a service station during his early teens. He was then given the opportunity to design his own car, which led to the building of his own personal empire. His cars caught the eye of several celebrities, which also include Sylvester Stallone, Wayne Newton, Rod Stewart and the late Farrah Fawcett. Also, as co-founder and CEO of Starbridge Systems, Inc. in the late
1990’s, DiMora built the world’s smallest, fastest supercomputer, nicknamed HAL (for hyper algorithmic logic), using field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Customers included NASA, the US Air Force, and the National Cancer Institute. DiMora is also recognized for his outstanding contributions to humanitarian efforts, both locally and internationally. His efforts have been geared toward the fight against breast cancer and serious diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s, raising funds for DesertArc, and also to support injured Marines. DiMora’s contributions range from fundraising to creating unique ways of using digital media and the new online social networks to increase awareness of these organizations. After an hour-long ceremony, DiMora, along with his wife, Yvonne, were presented with the star from Board Members of the Palm Springs Walk of Stars Committee, which also include former Wheel of Fortune hostess Susan Stafford.
