Story by Lisa Robyn Lawrence ~Photos by Catherine Jardine Earth, Wind & Fire hit the audience, with “Boogie Wonderland” and got the entire house on their feet at Fantasy Springs Resort’s Special Event Center, in Indio, near Palm Springs California. They just kept hitting us with their songs that blew the audience away with “Shining Star” “Singasong” and a most awesome cover of the Beatles’ “Got To Get You Into My Life,” just to name a very few. During their numerous instrumental riffs, showcasing the incomprehensible mastery of their craft, the music went on well into the night. It was impossible to sit down; we just had to boogie with them. The palpable music vibrated our chests with a most unbelievable upbeat, sensation. Who could dwell on anything negative during an all enveloping performance by the masters of the musical fusion of R&B, Soul, Jazz, Rock, Pop, African, South American
and Funk, all blended so deliciously into a most exquisite package of tasty, auditory, visual and spiritual sensations? They were steaming HOT. The visionary, founding EWF member, Maurice White, was born Dec. 19, 1941, in Memphis, Tenn., where he was immersed in a rich musical culture that spanned the boundaries between jazz, gospel, R&B, blues and early rock. White’s musical signature bears the indelible evidence of this background. “We live in a negative society,” White once told Newsweek magazine. “Most people can’t see beauty and love. I see our music as medicine … I wanted our music to convey messages of universal love and harmony without force-feeding listeners’ spiritual content.” Friday, we were fortunate to have, three of the original band members performing, Ralph Johnson on drums,
congas, percussion and vocals; Verdine White on bass and vocals; and Philip “The Voice” Bailey, whom Johnson likened to “a fine red wine that keeps getting better and better.” The band also consisted of an incomparable array of exotic percussion instruments, bongos, congas, chimes and African kalimba along with traditional drums, guitars, bass, keyboards, brass horn, sax and some nearly impossible, mindbending vocals and slick choreography. It was truly exceptional musical experience. Attending Friday’s performance, as a 50th birthday gift from his thoughtful daughter, was an overjoyed Darryl Pearl and his lovely wife Cindy. Darryl admits that he has been a fan of Earth, Wind & Fire for more than 33 years. Happy Birthday Darryl, hope your spirits were raised through the roof like all the rest of us. It was a soul-touching, musical extravaganza of the highest magnitude. Ciao for now.

For the past 35 years, the man born Marvin Lee Aday has been a towering monument on the musical landscape. His legendary 1977 album Bat Out Of Hell transformed this former high school football player, nightclub bouncer and stage actor into one of the great American rock ‘n’ roll icons. That record, with its staggering operatic sound and impassioned vocals, has sold more than 43 million albums worldwide - still one of the biggest-selling records ever. Meat Loaf’s reputation as one of music’s greatest artists was underlined by such masterpieces as Dead Ringer (1981), Bad Attitude (1984) and the Bat Out Of Hell sequels Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell (1993) and Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose (2006). Other artists might have tried to match his scale and copy his sound, but no one has come close. Now, more than 30 years after he exploded onto the world stage, Meat Loaf is back with a new record, Hang Cool Teddy Bear (a title taken from a line in the classic Russ Meyer trash movie Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls). From opener Peace On Earth to closer Elvis In Vegas, its 13 tracks drag the classic Meat Loaf sound kicking and screaming into the 21st century. “I wanted it big, I wanted it dramatic, I wanted a rock record,” says Meat Loaf. “Yes, it sounds like a Meat Loaf record. But it sounds different too - it sounds new, it sounds fresh. It speaks to you in a different way.”
