Homeowners asked to Prepare for Wildfires COACHELLA VALLEY – Following an extremely dry winter, CAL FIRE has increased its staffing in Southern California for the fire season. Starting Monday, Apr. 15, CAL FIRE began transitioning into fire season in San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Over the past month, CAL FIRE has been hiring and training seasonal firefighters to augment its full-time firefighters and will now staff most of the department’s seasonal fire stations around the clock, along with several water dropping helicopters. Unless weather conditions drastically change, CAL FIRE began staffing its air tankers in Southern California on Apr. 22. In late March, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted their monthly snow survey and the low levels have CAL FIRE concerned about the impact to this year’s fire season. The lack of rain from January to March across the state is likely to go down as the driest ever in Northern Sierra

Hunger Action Month PALM SPRINGS - April is Hunger Action Month in the Coachella Valley and the City of Palm Springs is partnering with FIND Food Bank this month to help feed those in need while spreading awareness about the growing problem of food insecurity in our desert. By Investigator Lance Colmer Receiving a ticket for a traffic violation is never fun. The best way to prevent getting a citation is by knowing traffic laws and abiding by them. You may not realize it, but some of the most common violations that are being ticketed in California are associated with things that many drivers take for granted, such as window tint or hanging an object from your rear-view mirror. While window tint is a very popular addition to a car, California Vehicle Code § 26708(a) (1) states, “A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with anyobject or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or appliedupon the windshield or side or rear windows.” The glass on most new cars has been treated with some degree of window tinting to keep out harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays. This tinting is done during the manufacturing process, and is almost always in compliance with state window tinting laws.

However, window tinting done after a vehicle has been manufactured and sold, known as “after-market,” usually involves reflective tinting or very dark levels of tint that violate state law. Furthermore, being pulled over for a window tint violation often leads to additional violations, which are observed by the officer as he or she speaks to the driver and inspects the vehicle. Another common mistake by drivers is to hang an object, such as fuzzy dice, air freshener or a parking permit, from the rearview mirror. California Vehicle Code §26708(a)(2) states,“A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon the vehicle that obstructs or reduces the driver’s clear view through the windshield or side windows.” This means that any object hanging from your rearview mirror, that creates a blind spot or obstructs your clear view through the windshield could result in a citation. This easily avoided violation can be prevented by simply removing these objects and drivers should only display parking permits when they are parked.

On Sunday, April 21 at about 2:45 p.m., Indio Police Officers responded to a report of a two vehicle traffic collision involving a Ford gray SUV and Chevy tan pick-up on Calhoun Street north of Date Street. Officers arrived at the location and discovered a Hispanic adult male lying on ground of Calhoun Street with a gunshot wound. Indio Fire Department Paramedics immediately transported the gunshot victim to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital were the victim later passed away at the hospital. The suspect was described as a Hispanic adult male that fled the scene prior to the officer’s arrival. The gunshot victim was a

passenger of the Chevy tan pickup and the suspect is yet to be determined what his connection was to either of the two vehicles or parties involved in the incident. The Riverside County SheriffCoroner Office is investigating the identification of the victim and will release the information. Indio Police Detectives are on scene investigating the case and we currently have no information as to why the shooting occurred or detailed suspect information at this time. The investigation is ongoing. The Indio Police Department is asking for anyone who has information about the incident to please call the Indio Police Department at (760) 391-4057 or call Coachella Valley Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-STOP with anonymous information.

Annuities: Good or Bad? By Janice gough So many people in the media shy away from the suggesting that an Annuity may be a wise investment product. When they are discussed, it will sometimes be, in a negative way. Why would media represent this product in such a negative way? First, keep in mind that their salaries are paid by Stock companies and by market makers who would rather sway you to invest in Wall Street. The power of Wall Street creates a bias. In general, T.V. hires only Risk advisors to provide their Financial opinions and news. Most risk advisors do not offer these plans In studies today, more seniors prefer their investments to have guarantees. There is give and take in everything. With annuities you have no risks, other than liquidity. In order to achieve higher rewards, you must take risks, so an annuity may make not provide the high returns off investment, as the market may offer. Will Roger’s famous statement is still true…”I am not as concerned about the return on my money… as much as the return of my money.” This is how many of us think today. The nest egg we have accumulated for retirement must be a safe investment, so we may know exactly what our income will be in future year. Most retirees know that considering inflation and our economic factors, there will gradually be a demand for greater income. When you receive guarantees on a product, the trade off is committing to a time frame. Normally the longer the time frame the higher the guarantees will be. Fixed annuities, Certificates of Deposits and Bonds work this way. Clearly when selecting any of these products, the key is to make sure that the time frame you are committed to, is one that fits into your comfort level. Penalties for taking your money back prior to maturity can be great. Generally penalties are reduced gradually the longer you stay invested in the product. This is the mechanism in which insurance companies may control the money long enough to pay the guarantees. Unlike the products offered in today’s market, years ago the annuity contract could be written

to force an investor to annuitize it in order to get your money back. When you annuitize a product you elect a settlement option. This means that you will receive your money back in an income stream, similar to taking a pension. The settlement options offered are Lifetime, Joint Lifetime with Survivor benefits, Periods of time Certain, or taking a set Payment amount over a certain over a period of time. For investors who wish to transfer their investment to become an income stream, Single Premium Immediate annuities are sometimes used. Most annuities today offer various riders to enhance benefits. Income riders added to your annuity may offer a guaranteed rate of return annually (6-7 percent) if your money is held for a period of time. You must take your pay out as income, in order to receive that guaranteed annual rate of return. Other riders available are Long Term Care rider, which enhances your pay out if you have a LTC event. Critical Illness, Disability, Terminal illness, Unemployment, Extended Care and Nursing home are available. These may be included or added to protect the need for greater income or liquidity. Normally to add these riders, only simplified underwriting or no underwriting is required. They may be included or you may be charged a fee to add them. You cannot add these benefits to Risk products. Some of the other beneficial features of annuities are tax sheltered money, penalty free liquidity features, protection from creditors, avoidance of needing a trust, and better solutions for transferring assets to beneficiaries, growth on investment by using crediting options based on the return of an index, and most importantly, Safety. As last week graphically reminded us, we live in a very dangerous world. The freedoms and liberties that we enjoy in the United States are unprecedented. Those very benefits are what put the U.S. at such high risk for additional terrorist attacks. It’s truly amazing that there have not been many more attacks in the 12 years since 9/11/2011.

Investment Know-How kevin Powell As large a business as law enforcement is in the U.S., there are going to be bad people who do bad things. There are going to be people who make poor decisions that have life threatening consequences. And hopefully those few are quickly brought to justice. But for the most part, it seems that law enforcement does a lot more good than the bad. And like many things in life, we tend to ignore the positives and focus on the negatives that appear to get the majority of the headlines. The swiftness of law enforcement investigating the bombings last week that lead to the capture and death of the perpetrators was astounding. This should give us all great peace of mind. However, Congress has already announced that hearings will begin this week to investigate why the FBI did not lock up the older conspirator and throw the keys away a couple of years ago when they questioned him after a warning from Russia. We barely made it one week before the finger pointing and politicians trying to spin this tragedy. This is the same Congress that hasn’t passed a budget in years. This is the same Congress that is responsible for the Sequester and Fiscal Cliff stress that our country is dealing with. This is the same Congress that elected to exempt their offices and staffs from any cuts as a result of the Sequester but decided to make cuts to first responders, air traffic controllers, teachers and the like. Instead of holding hearings so quickly, why not get around to addressing the financial woes of our country? Why not find ways to reign in our runaway spending and deficits? If someone doesn’t get about to that business, there will be more and more cuts to national defense and first responders and our country will be at even greater risk of attacks in the future.

Many are calling for the younger bomber to be tried as an enemy combatant in the war on terror. If we truly are at war, we can’t fight a politically correct war. That is probably the worst oxymoron ever. Webster’s defines war as a conflict carried on by force of arms, active hostility, warfare, and a period of hostility or active military. Feelings weren’t mentioned on time. War means someone wants to kill you and your family. Terrorist don’t care who they kill. They want to change society through fear and intimidation. They especially want to attack the innocent and those least able to protect themselves. Our security isn’t just up to law enforcement officials either. We all have to play an active role in helping them do their jobs in the most efficient manner possible. The public response last week in Boston was crucial to the swift capture of the younger bomber. Perhaps we all can be a little more active in speaking up in the future when we see injustice at any time. Just like the Dorner case earlier this year, law enforcement brought about a swift end to a very dangerous situation with the help of the public. The federal government spends approximately a trillion

dollars a year to protect us from threats domestically and around the world. Cities, counties and states spend hundreds of billions more in addition to billions spent by the private sector for security. I can only hope that as we walk the tightrope of protecting our personal liberties and actually catching and punishing the bad guys,

that we support and appreciate the men and women of law enforcement on a daily basis. We are very blessed to have such capable and dedicated people working so hard to make our lives a little bit safer. Thank you law enforcement for a job well done. So, for the past 20 years, the official Desert social season ends with fireworks – literally – as the AIDS Assistance Program (AAP) present their major black-tie optional (read ‘colorful’) al fresco fund-raising event with An Evening Under the Stars. Founded in 1991, AAP distributes $100 per month in food vouchers to each client. Vouchers are redeemable for all items except alcohol, tobacco or pet products, such as food, household needs, toiletries, hygienic products and other personal items. Since it’s beginning, and under the devoted commitment of CEO Mark Anton, AAP’s client roster has grown from about 20 to 500 people, and AAP’s voucher program is currently budgeted at $600,000 annually; an impressive amount when the organization receives no financial aid from either state or federal government. Not only is AAP a very special organization, its annual major fundraiser is as well. For starters, it is held on the O’Donnell Golf Club, an ultra-private, golf course hidden in downtown Palm Springs and, although held outside, the dinner is served while guests are seated. Also impressive are the headline performers who have appeared at prior years’ events, including Lily Tomlin, the B-52s and Pink Martini. This year’s headlining performer is 30-million-recordsales artist Cyndi Lauper, who has recently joined with Lady Gaga to be co-spokespersons for AIDS awareness and to educate women around the world about AIV/AIDS. RANCHO MIRAGE Assemblyman Brian Nestande Honored Holocaust Survivor Frances Nassau at the Tolerance Education Center in Rancho Mirage on Friday, Apr. 19. The California State Assembly honors a Holocaust Survivor every year during Holocaust Memorial Week. The event was held here for the first time with plans to continue the tradition in the Valley. Nassau spent time in the infamous Auschwitz prison camp and lost her parents and brothers there. She spoke to the guests about her ordeal during World War II and being liberated by the British in 1945. She weighed only 65 pounds when freed and told of the horrors she experienced during her incarceration in the notorious Nazi Camp. The Tolderance Education Center teaches children about tolerance for all races and faiths. Bullying is a major problem. The Center is funded by private donations and was founded by Earl and Shirley Greif so future generations will not forget the horrors of intolerance and bigotry.

PALM SPRINGS – Smokey Bear, the iconic symbol of the United States Forest Service’s message of “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires,” will be visiting the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway on Saturday, Apr. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children can visit and have their pictures taken with Smokey Bear.

Smokey Bear has been the recognized symbol for wildfire prevention since 1944. Created by artist Albert Staehle, the first poster of Smokey Bear showed him pouring a bucket of water on a campfire. Smokey Bear came to life in 1950, when a fire swept through the Capitan Mountains in New Mexico and a cub was discovered badly burned. The United Press and Associated Press picked up the story and soon the little cub’s story was known nationwide. The State Game Warden offered the cub to the Chief of Forest Service with the understanding that the small bear would be used solely to help spread the word for fire prevention and wildlife conservation. They also find peace and release by attending sporting events, listening to music or watching a good movie or DVD. Frank Capra may not be a name young people recognize, but if you have ever watched Jimmy Stewart in “It’s A Wonderful Life” at Christmas, you know him. He was the director, and that movie tops the AFI (American Film Institute) list of the 100 most inspirational American movies. Another Capra film on the list is “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” also starring Jimmy Stewart. That movie could and should inspire all of our currents Congressional leaders. was a dream come true for me because my family and I watched “It’s A Wonderful Life” every Christmas. For Capra the true hero in his films was always the little guy who, like Harry Bailey (James Stewart in “Wonderful Life”), makes a difference in the lives of others. Inspirational films often have dark themes or are about dark times like Steven Spielberg’s moving “Schindler’s List,” starring Liam Neeson as Otto Schindler. Otto was a flawed German who nevertheless made a difference. As a result of his actions, which could have cost him his life, he saved thousands of Jews during Hitler’s Holocaust. Many sports films like “Field of Dreams,” “Rocky” and “The Spirit of Saint Louis” inspire and are available on DVD. You can also check out “42.” which was just released this month. “42” is a true story about Jackie Robinson, a remarkable man who overcame insurmountable odds on his path to baseball glory. Animals also inspire us, even a little pig like “Babe.” Babe believed that anything is possible and his story is also on the AFI list. As a baby Babe is raised by a sheep dog when his real mother is taken away. He aspires to herd sheep just like his beloved new Mom, but every creature scoffs at Babe’s dreams, especially the cat. In the end Babe proves to all that kindness and perseverance will prevail. James Cromwell received a Supporting Actor nomination for his performance as the stoic farmer who loved this heroic little porker. You will be pleased to know that all 48 piglets that played Babe in the movie were spared from ever becoming pork chops. In payment for their fine performances, they have all lived happily ever after on a farm. This fact is inspirational too. SCRATCHing An iTCH By paul Krassner I first woke up at the age of six. It began with an itch in my leg. My left leg. But somehow I knew I wasn’t supposed to scratch it. Although my eyes were closed, I was standing up. In fact, I was standing on a huge stage. And I was playing the violin. I was in the middle of playing the “Vivaldi Concerto in A Minor.” I was wearing a Little Lord Fauntleroy suit–ruffled white silk shirt with puffy sleeves, black velvet short pants with ivory buttons and matching vest–white socks and black patent-leather shoes. My hair was platinum blond and wavy. On this particular Saturday evening–January 14, 1939–I was in the process of becoming the youngest concert artist in any field ever to perform at Carnegie Hall. But all I knew was that I was being taunted by an itch. An itch that had become my adversary. I was tempted to stop playing the violin, just for a second, and scratch my leg with the bow, yet I was vaguely aware that this would not be appropriate. I had been well trained. I was a true professional. But that itch kept getting fiercer and fiercer. Then, suddenly, an impulse surfaced from my hidden laboratory of alternative possibilities, and I surrendered to it. Balancing on my left foot, I scratched my left leg with my right foot, without missing a note of the “Vivaldi Concerto.” Between the impulse and the surrender, there was a choice–I had decided to balance on one foot–and it was that simple act of choosing which triggered the precise moment of my awakening to the mystery of consciousness. This is me! The relief of scratching my leg was overshadowed by a surge of energy throughout my body. I was being engulfed by some kind of spiritual orgasm. By a wave of born-again ecstasy with no ideological context. No doctrine to explain the shock of my own existence. No dogma to function as a metaphor for

the mystery. Instead, I woke up to the sound of laughter. I had heard that sound before, sweet and comforting, but never like this. Now I could hear a whole symphony of delight and reassurance, like clarinets and guitars harmonizing with saxophones and drums. It was the audience laughing. I opened my eyes. There were rows upon rows of people sitting out there in the dark, and they were all laughing together. They had understood my plight. It was easier for them to identify with the urge to scratch than with a little freak playing the violin. And I could identify with them identifying with me. I knew that laughter felt good, and I was pleased that it made the audience feel good–but I hadn’t intended to make them laugh. I was merely trying to solve a personal dilemma. So the lesson I woke up to–this totally nonverbal, internal buzz–would serve as my lifetime filter for perceiving reality and its rules. If you could somehow translate that buzz into words, it would spell out: One person’s logic is another person’s humor. It was as though I had been zapped by the god of Absurdity. I didn’t even know there was such a concept as absurdity. I simply experienced an overpowering awareness of something when the audience applauded me for doing what I had learned while I was asleep. But it was only when they laughed that we had really connected, and I imprinted on that sound. I wanted to hear it again. I was hooked. And the first laugh was free. Even if you’re not familiar with either of these bands that performed, the photos will give you an idea of just how big a deal it was to see these bands up close for anyone present. “The last time I saw Grizzly Bear, I paid $75 for a balcony-binocular-worthy seat,” Knapp said. Both the Grizzly Bear and Franz Ferdinand were in town to play at the 2013 Coachella Music & Arts Festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio the past two weekends.

PALM SPRINGS – The City of Palm Springs turned 75 last week and celebrated with a big block birthday party at the O’Donnell golf course in Palm Springs on Saturday, Apr. 20. The party was free to everyone. Children were treated to a Petting Zoo, carnival games, many large inflatable’s for climbing, jumping and bouncing, including a “Kids Zone” area. L o c a l ve n d o r s h e l d displays showing the decades of transformation of Palm Springs.

Vintage cars and fire trucks graced the grounds. Something new at every turn as there so many booths to visit. The event was from 3 to 8 p.m. with entertainment each hour. The Palm Springs High School Band played, The American Glee Club danced and local singers graced the stage. The theme was to celebrate the 75 years with songs from each decade. Elvis, Marilyn, Carol Channing impersonators sang to the delight of the crowd. Local singers included Mara Getz, Joey English, Steve Connolly, Nicole Parker, and Vicki Knight, Ben Reese plus many others. Brain

Waznek, also known as Bella da Ball, was the emcee Mayor Steve Pougnet invited the Councilmen, Sponsors and all the cast onto the stage just before the huge fireworks display. He told the crowd that this whole event was donated with Able and McCallister designs putting the event together and Harold Matzner, Jim Houston, Agua Caliente and P.S. Resorts as presenting sponsors. T h e F i r e wo r k s we r e spectacular and the Birthday party was one to remember as the biggest and the best.

Inspiration at the Movies By theda Kleinhans reichman As President Obama noted in his speech to the nation on Friday, “This past week was a tough one.” On Monday, dark shadows fell over the Boston Marathon when bomb blasts turned finish line victory into chaos. Later in the week a violent explosion rocked the small town of West, Texas, killing many more than in Boston. As the news reached the nation, we all grieved for our fellow American, but like 9-11, goodness overcame evil as heroic bystanders

theda kleinhans reichman and first responders rushed into harm’s way to help those in need. They put others before themselves which is the mark of a true hero. In times of trouble people reach out to one another, seeking comfort from family and friends. They also find peace and release by attending sporting events, listening to music or watching a good movie or DVD. Frank Capra may not be a name young people recognize, but if you have ever watched Jimmy Stewart in “It’s A Wonderful Life” at Christmas, you know him. He was

the director, and that movie tops the AFI (American Film Institute) list of the 100 most inspirational American movies. Another Capra film on the list is “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” also starring Jimmy Stewart. That movie could and should inspire all of our currents Congressional leaders. Years ago I interviewed Frank Capra at his home. It was a dream come true for me because my family and I watched “It’s A Wonderful Life” every Christmas. For Capra the true hero in his films was always the little guy who, like Harry Bailey (James Stewart in “Wonderful Life”), makes a difference in the lives of others. Inspirational films often have dark themes or are about dark times like Steven Spielberg’s moving “Schindler’s List,” starring Liam Neeson as Otto Schindler. Otto was a flawed German who nevertheless made a difference. As a result of his actions, which could have cost him his life, he saved thousands of Jews during Hitler’s Holocaust. Many sports films like “Field of Dreams,” “Rocky” and “The Spirit of Saint Louis” inspire and are available on DVD. You can also check out

“42.” which was just released this month. “42” is a true story about Jackie Robinson, a remarkable man who overcame insurmountable odds on his path to baseball glory. Animals also inspire us, even a little pig like “Babe.” Babe believed that anything is possible and his story is also on the AFI list. As a baby Babe is raised by a sheep dog when his real mother is taken away. He aspires to herd sheep just like his beloved new Mom, but every creature scoffs at Babe’s dreams, especially the cat. In the end Babe proves to all that kindness and perseverance will prevail. James Cromwell received a Supporting Actor nomination for his performance as the stoic farmer who loved this heroic little porker. You will be pleased to know that all 48 piglets that played Babe in the movie were spared from ever becoming pork chops. In payment for their fine performances, they have all lived happily ever after on a farm. This fact is inspirational too.

Figue is the brainchild of restaurateur Lee Morcus who brings a stylish yet casual dining experience to the Desert that is characteristic of the Mediterranean region. “We are truly excited about bringing the Figue experience to La Quinta,” said Morcus. “From the gracious welcome our guests receive at the front desk, to the last, lingering bite of a dessert, ‘sharing’ is the thread that unifies the Figue experience.” Heading the culinary team is Executive Chef François de Mélogue, who has fused flavors from the Mediterranean region for the American palate where everything on the menu is designed to be shared among a table of diners. The menu is organized in six sections: Salumi and Cured Meats; Small Dishes; Soup, Salads and Pasta; Big Plates; Sides; and Desserts. Everything is made from scratch using the finest and freshest ingredients. During a media event held on Wednesday, Apr. 17, I shared dinner with 24 other guests. Our journey began with a tasting of Salumi and Cured Meats including Harissa Almonds & Warm Olives; a Mad Spaniard Charcuterie Platter of Jamon Serrano, Soria Chorizo, Mojama Air Dried Tuna and Mahon Cheese.Jamón. Then Chef de Melogue offered several Tasting Dishes representing a myriad of regional Mediterranean influences including a Margherita

palate pleasers Pizza with Tomato, Basil and Buffalo Mozzarella; Diver Sea Plancha Scallops with Zucchini Spaghetti and Saffron Carrot Sauce, which was a personal favorite. One dinner guest asked the kitchen to send more scallops because they were gobbled up before getting to his end of the table. We shared a Kibbe made with Lebanese Lamb and Bulgar Wheat Meatball, served with a Cucumber Salad and Hummus. Before and in between each dish, Sommelier Celeste Cotta CSW, served a variety of wines to accompany each dish. “Wine and spirits are an essential part of the convivial Mediterranean dining experience and so we created a collection of fun, approachable and unique choices that go exceedingly well with the fascinating food,” Cotta said. To tantalize our taste buds further, Chef de Melogue prepared a delicious Rabbit Ragu over Creamy Polenta, which everyone drooled over. Then we shared a Crispy Squid dish made with Spanish Chorizo Aioli. If that wasn’t enough to impress even the most discriminate diner, a Mediterrano Salad made with Feta Cheese, Red Onion, Sweet Pepper, Olives, Pinenuts and Date Leather finished that round. Then we shared the Gnocchi Tocco Di Carne with a Pork & Porcini Sauce. We each got to taste a fabulous Bourride Provencal Stew made with St. Pierre Scallops, Mussels, Clams, Saffron Orange Brodo and Rouille. This stew was loaded with flavor. Just when I thought our gastronomic event was over, out came a Provencale Beef Daube made with Kobe Beef Cheeks, an Orange and Olive Ragu and Saffron Risotto. This dish was my husband’s

favorite. Figue is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. on weekends. The bar is open 4 p.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday with brunch served on weekends. Figue is located at 47474 Washington St. in La Quita.

goPher snake rescue by Kitty pallesen If you are a gopher snake and find yourself on the roof of the house, how do you get down? Snakes are not my favorite animals, but they are precious living things, so I honor their presence at the ranch. I have two gopher snakes that are seven feet long and hibernate with the tortoises in the sanctuary. I seldom see them, but have discovered their skins after shedding. The tortoises came out of hibernation a month early this year. When the tortoises are out of hibernation, so are the snakes.

One of these snakes accidentally crawled in to Lucy and Rudy’s yard and that’s when the trouble began. I could tell by the barking there was a snake in the yard and ran as fast as I could to get there. Lucy and Rudy were in full attack mode, and this threatened snake was doing its best to fend them off. I didn’t know a gopher snake had the ability to raise its head two feet off the ground for defense and strike bites. After the dogs were safely in the house, I went back to inspect the snake. He was gone. He had crawled up an oleander bush and gotten on the roof of the house. I grabbed a ladder and scrambled up. He was half on the roof and wrapped around the top of a bush. The roadrunners saw me up on the roof, so they came up and discovered the snake. The snake was in danger again with no place to hide from the roadrunner attacks. I chased the roadrunners off the roof to protect the snake. When they were gone, the snake started moving across the roof, but how was he going to get down? As he was inspecting the edges, he saw an

old tree branch nearby I had stuck in the ground to hang birdhouses on. He proceeded to hang three feet down from the ledge and project himself two feet out to get to the top of that branch. It was one of the most amazing animal feats I have ever witnessed. He figured out the route safely back to the tortoise sanctuary unharmed. Excer pted from www. Save-a-Pet Announces New Animal Hospital to Open in DHS! It’s been nearly three decades since an impassioned animal lover saw a problem and boldly did something about it. Her name was Mary Sydnes and her non-profit legacy, Save-a-Pet, is thriving under new leadership. But first, let’s pay tribute to this remarkable woman who ran a local thrift store to fund the costs of medical care, food and shelter for unwanted dogs and cats roaming the streets of Desert Hot Springs. And when funds were lacking, Mary’s pocketbook was open. Over the years, Mary and her devoted team of volunteerscame to theaid of countless needy pets, keeping them out of death camp shelters or becoming victims of hit and runs. The non-profit animal rescue got its real start in1984 when Mary purchased a small house on 18th Street.With the help of volunteers, they built a kennel on the property that continues to operate today as

My Ravens, Oh My! by Kitty Pallesen Living with 40 ravens is like having the circus come to town every day! First of all, let’s distinguish exactly who we’re talking about. Ravens are different than crows. Way different. Ravens are bigger and calmer. Their caws are deeper, varied, and melodic in a clucking sort of way. Crows are high pitched, nervous, and jumpy. Ravens have a Roman hooked bill and a diamond wedge shaped tail. Crows yap and flap. Ravens

soar. Ravens possess legendary intelligence and seem to enjoy life more. Ravens are fun to watch, because they fly just to play. Ravens are very social, quite the conversationalists, and interact with each other, other animals, and people endlessly. They love to tease my dogs and are interested in everything. They pick up rocks to drop in the water bowls. An empty plastic bottle can provide entertainment for hours, for them and for me. They follow me over to feed the neighbors horses, talking the whole way. At the break of dawn every morning they gather and wait for me on the electric poles and wires by the house. They know I am going to walk out to a feeding area with a bag of food for the wild dogs. One morning one of the bowls, actually an old cast iron skillet, was gone. The coyotes had carried it off in the night, but how far could or would a coyote drag a heavy skillet? I started walking farther out in the desert with the food bag in one hand and the other hand held up to block the light from the rising sun in my eyes. I kept going and going, with no skillet in sight. Just as I stopped and

turned to go back, I was greeted with the most amazing sight. All 40 ravens had followed behind me “pied piper” style on the ground. When I stopped, they stopped. We just stood there in the morning light staring at each other. I said, “Well, what are you guys doing out here?” They looked back at me with the same question and proceeded to discuss it amongst themselves. Then we all walked back together and commenced with the regular breakfast routine. Yep, ravens are interested and

The blessing transmits Divine Will, Purpose, Love & Wisdom to humanity. Buddha (Wisdom) and Christ (Love) work in unison during this festival. More than 2000 years ago the Buddha brought light to the East while the Christ brought Love/Wisdom to the West. Budweiser Clydesdales To Appear In Palm Desert

PALM DESERT – The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales, the symbol of quality and tradition for Anheuser-Busch since 1933, are scheduled to make several appearances in the area on Thursday April, 25th 2013 on El Paseo Road. The eight-horse hitch will be harnessed and hitched to the famous red beer wagon at El Paseo Road on April 25th from 2 - 4 p.m. The Clydesdales’ appearance in Palm Desert is one of hundreds made annually by the traveling hitches. Canadians of Scottish descent brought the first Clydesdales to America in the mid-1800’s. Today, the giant draft horses are used primarily for breeding and show. Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least three years of age, stand approximately 18 hands – or six feet – at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2,000 pounds, must be bay in color, have four white legs, and a blaze of white on the face and black mane and tail. A gentle temperament is very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year. A single Clydesdale hitch horse will consume as much as 20-25 quarts of feed, 4050 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water per day. Each hitch travels with a Dalmatian. In the early days of brewing, Dalmatians were bred and trained to protect the horses and guard the wagon when the driver went inside to make deliveries. The Budweiser Clydesdales can be viewed at the Anheuser-Busch breweries in St. Louis, Mo.; Merrimack, N.H.; and Ft. Collins, Colo. They also may be viewed at Grant’s Farm in St. Louis and at Warm Springs Ranch, the 300-plus acre Clydesdale breeding farm located near Boonville, Mo.
