SCE Installs Fire-resistant Equipment West of DHS
By Desert Star StaffThe West of Devers Project is located in a portion of the existing Devers Rightof-Way corridor, which traverses the incorporated and unincorporated communities of Banning, Beaumont, Calimesa, Colton, Grand Terrace, Loma Linda, Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands, San Bernadino, and Yucaipa in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The Project will replace existing overhead conductors and poles with new equipment, including insulated lines, fire-resistant power poles, and cross arms. The insulated lines will be buried, and the bars and crosses will be coated with a flame retardant to mitigate the risk of wildfires further.
The project will also add
fire-resistant transformers and associated equipment and relocate some existing underground circuits from the Devers Right-of-Way to other locations for reliability. The project is needed to support the delivery of electricity from the renewable energy projects being developed in eastern Riverside County to meet California’s ambitious Clean Energy Standard goals.
Southern California Edison has surpassed all goals set in its 2020-2022 Wildfire Mitigation Plan. This includes installing covered conductors and adding fuses to circuits, inspecting and removing thousands of hazard trees, deploying weather stations, and implementing a new

“When children are unable to keep learning, creating, and growing throughout the summer months, they not only fall behind their peers but may never catch up,” Pliego pointed out. “Summer can mean no more access to books, regular meals, art supplies, and the end of exercising and playing with friends until the next school year.”

“Of those kids that regularly access a free breakfast and free lunch, sometimes that evening meal during the school year at their local school, only about 15% of those kids have access to a summer feeding program,” Garver noted. “So we know that kids are going hungry over the summer months.”
Bybuses stop running in June. Research shows kids can lose more than a third of what they learned during the school year during the

Banning The Bible In Schools Because Of “Obscene Content”
By Desert Star StaffSalt Lake City - In Utah, one of the most conservative U.S. states, a district is banning the Bible from elementary and middle schools in the future - because of “offensive and violent content.”
Several U.S. media reported that the ban takes effect immediately in Davis County (located north of
Salt Lake City) on Friday.
Background: a 2022 state law allows books and movies with “pornographic and indecent content” to be banned in schools.
The committee charged with checking the Bible concluded that the book did not violate the law. Nevertheless, the decision was made to restrict access to high school-age students.
A complaint from parents about the new law preceded the decision.
“Now we can ban all books and not even have to read them,” the Dec. 11 letter, obtained by “ The Salt Lake Tribune” newspaper, said. he list of books banned so far still lacks one; the letter continues the Bible, “one of the most sexually charged books ever.” It
contains inappropriate content such as “incest, masturbation, sexual acts with animals, prostitution, genital mutilation, oral sex, dildos, rape, and even infanticide.” The ban has now been complied withprobably against the wishes of the letter’s authors.
Utah is not the only U.S. state to ban specific topics from the school
curriculum. In Florida, the governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis want to ban school instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity for all ages. Such education is already forbidden from kindergarten through third grade. The ban stems from a 2022 law that opponents call “Don’t Say, Gay.”

PSPS process. SCE uses risk analytics and data to measure effectiveness. Workers like Willie Rios continue to ensure customer safety and power supply, replacing bare wires
with covered conductors in high-risk areas like Valencia. A covered conductor helps reduce the risk of fire between 75% to 80%, and it can be installed more quickly than traditional undergrounding or pole replacements. SCE
has already replaced over 3,000 miles of bare wire with covered conductors in high-fire-risk areas, and it is on track to replace another 3,500 miles this year.
In addition to installing a covered conductor, SCE

quarter while at Mt. San Jacinto High School. It was surprising that he was credit deficient, considering how incredibly responsible and reliable he proved to be while at MSJ. However, the COVID-19 pandemic affected Landon in his early high school years. He fell exceptionally behind with independent learning and then gave up altogether academically. When he started at Mt. San Jacinto High School, he took advantage of his second chance and the opportunity to get caught up to earn his diploma. He had worked a
few Heating & Air Conditioning jobs with a family friend, so when he learned about the Heating & Air Conditioning program at Mt. San Jacinto High School, he was excited to sign up for the classes. According to the instructor, he has excelled in HVAC and is a standout. He completed two HVAC classes, graduated high school early in December, and continued as an early college enrollee at College of the Desert. He will be done with 5 HVAC classes by the end of this school year, and his instructor will be helping him obtain a job in the industry.
continues to underground about 10,000 miles of power lines in high fire-risk areas. The effort will be completed in 2025 and help protect communities across SCE’s service territory from the damage that can result from
severe wildfires. This work is essential to support the clean energy sources that will help meet California’s clean air and climate goals. The company has achieved this significant milestone by prioritizing this work over the past three years.

Wildfire Risk Hurting CA Home Values, Increasing Insurance Costs
By Desert Star StaffIn terms of home value and insurance costs, it is getting increasingly expensive to have a home on the edge of the woods in California.
A new study from the nonprofit think tank Resources for the Future found home values in a fire hazard severity zone drop 4.3%, an average of $21,500, when sellers make the required disclosure.
Margaret Walls, director of the climate risks and resilience program for Resources for the Future and the report’s coauthor, said the market is driving the price drop.
“We want to know that people understand the risks when they choose where to buy a house,” Walls explained. “And if they know the risks, we expect them to be reflected in the prices.”
Walls pointed out that local governments can limit building in the urban/ wildland interface to mitigate the risk of a destructive wildfire. The state and federal governments can reduce the fuel load on public lands. Homeowners can remove brush and other flammable materials, ensure fire-resistant building materials, and build in defensible spaces.
Two large insurance companies, State Farm and Allstate, announced they no longer write new homeowner’s policies in California, mainly due to the risk of wildfire. Walls noted that the effects of climate change are taking a financial toll.
“If you’re in a high-firerisk area, it’s already hard to get insurance,” Walls stressed. “So now two more companies are unavailable
to you. So you’ll probably go to the FAIR plan, considering the insurance of last resort.”
The FAIR plan is a state-run risk pool offering
fire insurance in highrisk areas not served by traditional insurers.

Unions, Environmental Advocates Press to Reform CA Referendum Process
By Desert Star Staff Unions, environmental groups, and other progressive organizations are leading the charge to reform California’s referendum process, which allows voters to repeal laws passed by the legislature.
Assembly Bill 421 came about after the oil industry gathered signatures to repeal a law blocking new drilling in neighborhoods.
Asm. Isaac Bryan, D-Los Angeles, who introduced the bill, said the current system incentivizes signature gatherers to mislead voters.
“The oil companies then spent nearly $25 million in 90 days to gather the signatures to pause the law, so they could apply for new drilling permits and put it on the referendum,” Bryan recounted. “And there was hours of documented
video evidence that many of the signature gatherers were lying to people.”
It is legal to word a referendum in a confusing way, in which a “yes” vote would overturn the law in question. Under the proposed bill, voters would decide whether to keep or repeal the law. The California Chamber of Commerce opposes the measure, arguing it would
make signature gathering more expensive and should require a constitutional amendment.
Bryan added that the bill would require signature gatherers to wear a badge with their name, identification number, and photo.
“Folks should have to have adequate training and also be registered,” Bryan contended.
“So that it’s clear that if they are violating the ethics of signature
gathering, that can be reported in a way that’s accountable.”
The bill would require petitions to identify the referendum’s top three donors and mandates that at least 10% of signature gatherers be community-based volunteers. The bill has already passed the State Assembly. Its next stop is the State Senate Elections Committee.
