“STOP SHOOTING!” 5 dead in California school shooting, attacker killed by police By Desert Star Staff Five people have been killed and there are reports of multiple injuries in a shooting at a Rancho Tehama elementary school in northern California. The attacker is also dead, reportedly killed by police.

Five people have been killed, including the shooter, KNVN-TV reported. Two children are among the injured. The shooting began “right about 8 am,” local time (1600 GMT), according to Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnson. The attack reportedly started

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The first annual Palm Springs International Animation Festival’s, was held last weekend to rave reviews. There were many full length animated feature films and a lot of animated short films shown in two venues. This was a dream by founder Brian Hoff of years ago. After many hours of work his dream came true with the help from a lot of friends. Dimitri Halkidis and his Boo2Bullying organization was the presenting sponsor. The event was held November 9th thru 11th. A pre-opening party was held at the home of Mayor Robert Moon and Bob Hammack. They took all the furniture out of their home to make room for the 75-people

attending. This is a new and exciting festival to add to the many festivals that have made their way to the Desert. Most of the films were sold out. The opening night film was, Loving Vincent, about the very complicated life of Vincent van Gogh. Every shot in this film, 120 paintings, was painted over by 100 artists in the style of Van Gogh. This is the first hand painted movie. The film shows events from the 800 letters written by Van Gogh and interviews from people based on these letters. The film leads up to his extremely controversial death. This celebrated artist sold only one painting during his life and his art now sells in the millions of dollars. Voice cast was by renown actors, Seoirse

at a nearby home before moving to the school. “I know of at least three deaths,” Johnson told KNVN. “I am told at this point the suspected shooter is deceased by law enforcement bullets.” Over 100 law enforcement

officers have responded to the scene, the sheriff said. The Enloe Medical Center confirmed to KNVN that three children and one adult were evacuated from the scene. One of them required a medical helicopter. Mercy Dignity Health in nearby

Redding confirmed receiving three additional patients. I know that we have medevac’d a number of students,” Johnston said. “I know that the school’s been cleared. I know that we have Continues on Page 6

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – The #Me Too social media campaign that went viral following accusations that movie producer Harvey Weinstein sexually harassed or raped a number of women is now taking to the streets, starting with a march and rally in Los Angeles this Sunday. Tarana Burke, a women’s rights organizer in New York, created the meme about 10 years ago, but it gained traction after dozens of allegations surfaced against Weinstein and other Hollywood bigwigs. L.A. rally organizer Karen Pomer says this movement is not just about the celebrity victims.

“We always quote Tarana Burke, who is the original creator of the Me Too campaign,” Pomer stresses. “‘For every Harvey Weinstein, there’s a hundred more men in the neighborhood who are doing the exact same thing.’” The first major #Me Too rally took place the week before last in Paris. More are coming up, including one Nov. 25 in San Diego. You can get more information on the #Me Too Survivor’s March Facebook page. According to the World Health Organization, one-inthree women worldwide suffers physical or sexual violence. After the allegations against

Weinstein became public, the Me Too hashtag was reposted tens of millions of times. Pomer adds that the problem is pervasive across all levels of society. “Our focus is more on everyday people because it happens to us, too,” she states. “And we need to be the recipients of some of that empathy that’s been going around. “Our focus is to help change the culture just by coming out.” A 2015 survey by Cosmopolitan magazine found that one-in-three American women has experience sexual harassment in the workplace.

What Sacramento Did For (Or is it to?) HOAs in 2017 [Part 2]

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Last week’s column addressed SB2, AB534 and AB1412. Three other significant bills, SB407, AB634, and AB 690, were also approved and will take effect in 2018. Senate Bill (“SB) 407 adds a new Civil Code 4515, which has the expressed intent of protecting the right of HOA members and residents to “peacefully assemble and freely communicate” regarding HOA living or “for social, political or educational purposes.” The statute protects the right of members or residents

to hold meetings regarding HOA issues, legislation, or public elections, and to invite public officials or candidates or homeowner organization representatives to speak in the association common area if the area is available. The statute also protects the right of members and residents to reasonably canvass or petition other members or residents and to distribute information regarding about public or HOA legal or political concerns. A member or resident using the common area for this is not to be charged a fee or deposit for use of the common area. Assembly Bill (“AB”) 634 spotlights a policy preference for solar energy by expanding Civil Code 714.1 and creating a new Section 4746. The changes make it clear that homeowners may, with reasonable limitations by the HOA, install solar systems on common area roofs

over their residence or garage. Associations may require the homeowner keep the system insured, and that the owner and subsequent owners take responsibility for any damage, repair, or maintenance costs caused by the system. The most novel part of the new law is that it opens the door to solar systems on apartment-style HOA building roofs, in which condominium units are stacked so that multiple units “share” the same roof. The HOA may require the homeowner to create a “solar site survey” to show they are not taking more than their fair share of the roof. Ultimately, this new law probably will not change much, as most multi-story HOA building roofs do not have sufficient usable area to allow a meaningful amount of solar installation per unit. The law reinforces the importance to associations of reasonable

solar installation policies in architectural rules as well as the importance of common area alteration agreements before installations. AB 690 primarily increases required disclosures by HOA managers, by adding a new subpart “f” to Business and Professions Code 11504, expanding Civil Code 5375, and adding new Civil Code Sections 5375.5 and 5376. Per Civil Code 5375 new subparts “d” and “e,” a manager or company must, no later than 90 days after being hired, disclose in writing to the association any businesses which give the management a referral fee or other financial benefit or which are partly owned by the management. When presenting any bid or proposal for services from a vendor to the association, managers or management companies must in writing disclose any conflict of

interest, whether by result of a referral fee to the management from the prospective vendor or because the manager or company owns or shares profits with the prospective vendor. Several more bills of interest to HOAs were introduced in 2017 but not passed, and which will still be considered in 2018. So, stay tuned! By Janice Gough Some of us who have a RothIRA, have heard that Congress is proposing changes to it, termed “Rothification”. This is the term used under new regulations sought by Congress. It is the idea of eliminating tax deductions for deferrals offered by IRA type of accounts, and, instead, mandating “aftertax” contributions with a payoff of tax-free earnings down the road. This is how Roth IRAs and Roth 401(k) s work, so hence, the term “Rothification” has emerged. One major change would be that “catch up” contributions will be considered contributions. If you are 50 or older, you can currently make what are called “catch-up” contributions to your Roth IRA. These allow you to add an additional $1,000 per year to your standard annual Roth IRA contribution limit of $5,500. This brings up your contribution to a total of $6,500, assuming that you have at least that much in taxable income. If you are married, “catch-ups” can yield an extra $2,000 in retirement savings, which you and your spouse can contribute to your combined Roth IRA each year. If you are expecting your tax rate to increase as you get older, maximizing a Roth IRA and catch-up contributions can be an especially costeffective approach to retirement investing. The benefit of compounding interest will produce significant greater income upon withdrawal. Also, both Roth and 401K Roths do not require mandatory distributions at age of 70 ½

or ever. Because there are no mandatory distributions, you can pass a Roth IRA tax-free and untouched to an heir, should you choose not to use the money yourself. Is Rothification of our retirement system a good idea? Proponents of Rothification talk about the great tax benefits that can that Congress would have with Roth accounts, solely. For Roth owners, the tradeoff for paying taxes now is a promise of completely taxfree withdrawals at retirement. A Roth retirement account can produce years of taxfree earnings. For the right individual, Roth accounts can be a great strategy and millions of Americans, who have made Roth contributions to both plans. Many have converted their traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs, trading present tax bills for future tax-free withdrawals. While Rothification has its supporters, it also has many opponents. Many experts have voiced concerns that Rothification would not be good for the retirement landscape. Americans are used to a retirement system that includes tax deductions for retirement contributions. An abrupt switch to a Full Roth system would be a shock. Also, there are concerns that many simply

would not make contributions without the incentive of an immediate tax break. Back in the eighties when universal deductibility was eliminated, IRA contributions became much less attractive to many taxpayers. Proponents feel that Rothification works well for immediate budget needs. These accounts are “aftertax”, thus producing revenue in the present tax year as opposed to tax deductible IRAs and deferred retirement accounts which decrease tax revenue in the present. Of course, down the road, something politicians don’t like to state is that Roth accounts are revenue losers for the government, considering the tax-free earnings they produce for years into the future. Roth accounts have been around 20 years offering big tax benefits. Statistics show that Roth accounts are still in the minority of retirement accounts because people like the immediate benefit of the IRA tax break in the year a contribution is made. Opponents of Rothification argue that the last thing the retirement system needs right now is anything that would reduce contributions. Opponents also bring up the issue of fairness. It is right to do

away with popular retirement savings options that benefit many Americans, to fund tax cuts for others? Rothification mainly alters the timing of collecting taxes and using it to raise revenue has literally been described as a “budget game” that goes nowhere in resolving our budget problems. While Rothification would immediately generate large gains in short-term revenue, it does so by sacrificing an equal or greater amount of future revenue. Over a long time-horizon, Rothification would not increase federal revenue, it may even reduce it. The future of Rothification is anything but clear. It may transform our retirement system or it may end up in the scrap heap of legislative proposals that never end up going anywhere. Stay tuned as the tax reform debate heats up in Congress in upcoming months.

Silver Star Recipient Honored in Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade

KMIR Tyler Harrison The 21st Annual Veterans Day Parade marched through the heart of downtown Palm Springs. Hundreds gathered to wave American flags and say ‘thanks’ to veterans in Saturday’s parade down Palm Canyon. Congressman Raul Ruiz, (D) 36th district, showed support for two local veterans by giving them his ride for the route. “Its the welcome home we never had,” said U.S. Army veteran Don Simpson who lives in Hemet. Simpson served during the Vietnam War. “When I came back, you know, you didn’t have any fanfare or anything. In fact, you were kind of looked down upon.” Another Vietnam veteran tried to forget. “Its an

experience that we spend the rest of our life trying to put behind us, for most of us. Its not something I like to relive but I do all the time,” said Ronnie Imel of the San Jacinto area. Imel also served in the United States Army. “The experience you have you wouldn’t trade it, but then I don’t know if you’d do it again,” said Simpson. “The way I move forward is helping other veterans. I have a foundation called ‘Veterans Paying it Forward’ and the help I give other veterans is kind of my therapy,” said Imel. That drive brought linked Simpson and Imel with Congressman Ruiz. “Ronnie Imel, who is a veterans’ advocate, helped me receive a Silver Star that Congressman Ruiz gave me in July. 50 years

after the fact,” explained Simpson. The Silver Star is the nation’s third highest award for valor in combat. “Both of them have

helped me, have been my mentors and advised me. Here in our district serving other veterans, they both deserve such recognition,”

said Congressman Ruiz. “It gives them a day they can hold their heads up high and be proud of what they did,” said Imel. Source: KMIR

SNAP: An Important Resource for US-Veterans

About 1.5 million veterans in the U.S. live in households that participate in the SNAP program. (U.S. Army) By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – As Ohio and the rest of the nation pause to commemorate Veterans Day Saturday, new research shows how some anti-poverty programs are

helping those who have served their country. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities looked at the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and found eight percent of Ohio veterans

are using SNAP benefits to put food on the table. That’s about 64,000 people, says Nick Sunday of Columbus, a veteran who helps others apply for the program at the Ohio Benefit Bank.

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Scams targeting veterans are on the increase, according to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, so postal inspectors are teaming up with AARP’s Fraud Watch Network in a new campaign called “Operation Protect Veterans.” Researchers surveyed vets and found that 80 percent have been targeted by scammers - and at least 16 percent have actually been defrauded. Strat Maloma, the senior program specialist and California lead for the AARP Fraud Watch Network, says in one common scheme, a caller will offer veterans a lump

sum to buy out their future pension or disability benefits. “They might find themselves in a difficult situation and therefore, might be tempted,” he says. “They sign over their benefits, and they never receive any compensation for it.” Authorities have also received many complaints about fake charities that claim to help veterans but are really just pocketing the donations. Maloma says people also charge money for access to records that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides for free. And he says he’s seen classic phishing scams seeking data that can be used to

steal the victim’s identity. “Scammers contact veterans claiming to be from the VA, and they need to ‘update their records’ with their personal information - be it their Social Security card number or be it some medical records, or be it account numbers, and so forth,” he explains. In yet another scam, the victim is offered - for a fee and some personal information - access to job listings from companies supposedly seeking to hire veterans. In short, there’s a lot to look out for. For more information, look online at aarp.org/ ProtectVeterans.

“That’s kind of sad to see that many veterans needing food,” he laments. “But how many veterans don’t even apply for SNAP? Sometimes people say, ‘Hey, I can get by with food pantries. Give it to somebody who really needs it.’ And I say, ‘No, you do need it, you know?’ I say, ‘Stay here, I’m going to sign you up.’” For five years, Sunday has manned a weekly table at a VA clinic in Columbus to connect veterans to resources that can help in adjusting to civilian life, including SNAP, Medicaid and utility assistance. Nationally, about 1.5 million veterans live in households that participate in the SNAP program. According to the data, young veterans have higher unemployment and lower labor force participation rates than similar civilians. And Sunday says he’s made helping veterans find jobs a priority. But in the beginning,

he realized employment cannot be attained without addressing other challenges. “I had to step backwards, because a lot of them had barriers - you have housing, food and utility bills,” he notes. “So, we of had to kind of work on the emergency services first to get the right door open for them; and then, slowly start working with them to find employment.” He adds sometimes asking for assistance is difficult, and can be a matter of time, transportation and even pride. But he says it will now be easier with a new requirement that VA caseworkers ask any veterans they are working with about food security. “You’re going to see probably a huge increase for people applying for SNAP,” he warns. “And the easier you make it for them, the better off for everybody - they don’t have to go anywhere, they’re satisfied.”

Texas Coalition Calls Gun Violence a Public Health Issue

By Desert Star Staff AUSTIN, Texas -- Another deadly mass shooting, this time in a south Texas town, has some state legislators seeking to recast the debate over gun violence as a public health issue. At a news conference by the group Texas Gun Sense, lawmakers and others said the killing of 26 people by a lone gunman in Sutherland Springs, near San Antonio, is partly the result of what they call an “anything goes” attitude toward gun laws in Texas. Rep. Nicole Collier, a Democrat from Fort Worth, said it’s time to get beyond the National Riffle Association’s talking points and take a common sense approach to dealing with the problem. “This pattern of death goes far beyond mental health, and we must begin looking at this as a public health matter,” Collier said. “Calling this latest

act of gun violence a mental health problem is a distraction.” Collier and others have said the response by lawmakers to the Sutherland Springs shootings needs to include ideas such as universal background checks, prosecuting those who lie on background checks, requiring licenses to open-carry long guns, and conducting an indepth study of gun violence in Texas and across the country. Coalition member Nicole Golden, Austin group leader for Moms Demand Action, called on lawmakers to pass tougher restrictions on persons convicted of domestic violence. “We know that the Sutherland Springs shooter was a domestic abuser,” Golden said. “The bill would protect victims of domestic abuse by prohibiting gun purchase and possession by abusive dating partners, and prohibiting gun purchase and

possession by any person convicted of a stalking crime.” State Rep. Gina Hinojosa, a Democrat from Austin, put forth a list for her fellow lawmakers of 10 solutions for addressing gun violence.

“This isn’t about the Second Amendment. Nobody’s trying to take away any law-abiding person’s guns,” Hinojosa said. “This is about keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.”

She said the goal is not to get rid of firearms, but rather to find ways to institute reasonable gun regulations aimed at preventing mass shootings and saving lives.

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – As Coloradans cast their ballots today, a grassroots effort to limit the influence of big money in politics is setting its sights on Denver’s 2018 election. The Denver Election Division has cleared the way for an initiative called “Democracy for the People” to be included in next year’s November ballot. Owen Perkins, board president of the group CleanSlateNow Action, says

if passed, candidates would not have to look exclusively to the wealthy and corporations for campaign funding. “It provides matching funds for small-dollar donors who give to candidates who don’t take special-interest money,” he says. “So that candidates for elected office start to see the value of talking to their constituents and talking to regular voters, as opposed to hanging out with millionaires.” Perkins says the initiative

would put a spotlight on anonymous “dark money” by requiring full disclosure on Super PAC contributions. He says from 2012 to 2017, almost $20 million was spent on municipal elections in Denver, but fewer than one-infive of those dollars came from people who actually live in the city. The new rules also would lower maximum donations to be in line with state standards. The measure would tap less than two-tenths of one

percent of Denver’s general fund to match campaign contributions and would apply to mayoral, city council and other candidates at the municipal level. Perkins says cities with public funding have seen more diverse candidates and elected officials who look like members of their communities, and up to 23 times greater participation by low-income residents. “Every community that’s enacted publicly

financed campaigns has seen participation grow tremendously,” he notes. “It makes it possible for people to run who don’t have big bankrolls behind them.” If the initiative is approved by voters, Denver would join Seattle, New York and Los Angeles - as well as states including Arizona, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Maine - that have passed similar campaign finance reforms.

Ballot Measure Targets Campaign Finance Rules for 2018 Elections

Education Group Slams GOP Tax Plan By Desert Star Staff Education groups blasted the GOP tax plan unveiled on Thursday - saying that eliminating most state and local tax deductions will blow a hole in education budgets,

and put about 700 jobs at risk in Nevada alone. An analysis by the National Education Association shows the move could cost 250,000 jobs nationwide. Ruben Murillo, Jr.,

president of the Nevada State Education Association, says the tax bill also takes away a $250 tax deduction that teachers use to cover school supplies they buy for their classrooms. “And that comes knowing

that teachers will spend more than $1,000 per teacher, on average, on school supplies,” he says. “They’re trying to help out by supplementing the budget with their own funds. Public education isn’t funded as well as it should be, and this does nothing to help change that track.” The NEA calls the tax plan a “$5 trillion giveaway to the wealthy and to corporations.” However, President Donald Trump’s national economic advisor, Gary Cohn, contends that lower taxes on big companies will create more profits that will then trickle down to spur

economic growth, create jobs and lead to higher wages. Murillo says the plan also hurts middle-class teachers by lowering the amount of student-loan interest they can deduct on their taxes. “If we want to attract teachers, we need to make sure that they’re able to do so without incurring such debt that they are forever indebted to the federal government,” he explains. “We want to make it easier to recruit and retain teachers, and this tax plan does not do that.” Murillo also notes that there is currently a teacher shortage in Nevada, particularly in the Las Vegas area - a problem that is mirrored in every state in the nation.

Children Sue to Stop Climate Change

A newly-filed lawsuit says rolling back climate protections endangers the lives of future generations. (Pezibear/Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff PITTSBURGH – The federal government is ignoring the threats to life on this planet presented by climate change - that’s the claim of a lawsuit

against Trump administration officials. The suit was filed in federal court in Philadelphia this week, on behalf of the Clean Air Council and two Pennsylvania children.

By Desert Star Staff Among 25,000 delegates from all over the world seeking global solutions to climate change. The 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties, or COP 23, is meeting this week and next in Bonn, Germany, to compare progress on reducing carbon emissions. President Donald Trump announced in June that the United States would opt out of the 2015 Paris accord, which set goals to reduce the rate of global warming. Minnesota is one of 14 states to say they will meet those goals on their own, and delegates such as the University of Minnesota’s executive director of the Energy Transition Lab, Ellen Anderson, say there is a reason for hope. “We are looking to meet the goals of the Clean Power Plan in the United States,” she says. “There will be more

of a patchwork. But the fact is that overall the United States is moving forward on reducing carbon emissions.” Anderson calls progress a patchwork because some states, such as Minnesota, will do more than others. Anderson told the conference in a presentation that climate leadership in the United States will now come from states and cities. She says it’s been helpful to compare notes with policymakers from other states and countries, and inspiring to learn what some of them are working on. “Tomorrow I’m going to an all-day session that involves people from literally countries all over the world that are trying to figure out pathways to 100 percent renewable energy,” she explains. According to Joseph Minott, executive director and chief counsel of the Council, when Donald Trump became president, he took on the responsibility of protecting

future generations from the effects of global climate change. But his executive orders and the actions of his appointed administrators are going in the opposite direction. “They are using ‘junk science’ to undo environmental protections that were created to protect public health and the environment,” he challenges. “And that, we feel, is unconstitutional.” President Trump has called climate change a hoax and has spearheaded a new emphasis on the development of fossil fuels, including coal and oil. Trump is named as a defendant in the lawsuit, but Minott points out that the president isn’t acting alone. “The people that he’s appointing in very sensitive positions are the ones that will develop the rules and regulations going forward that

Gabrielle Gifford’s Responds to California Shooting Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s, CoFounder of the gun violence prevention organization Gifford’s, today responded to the tragic shooting in Tehama County, California that has left five people dead so far at multiple locations, including at an elementary school. “Americans should not have to wonder if they will get shot as they sit in a classroom trying to learn or out on the streets running an errand. Our nation must do better. “In the aftermath of this

will impact public health and the environment,” he explains. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt and Energy Secretary Rick Perry also are named as defendants. The lawsuit seeks to prevent the administration from taking actions that would be likely to increase what it terms the life-threatening effects of climate change. Minott says the real science is well established. “You don’t have a choice as to whether you want to believe it or not believe it,” he says. “And all regulations developed, all policies developed, should keep in mind the impact this will have on future generations.” Last week, the National Climate Assessment was released, reinforcing the scientific consensus that human activity is the dominant contributor to climate change.

5 Surprising Facts about Pneumonia

By Desert Star Staff Pneumonia can strike anywhere and anytime, the American Lung Association reminds us. A serious, potentially life-threatening lung infection, pneumonia is primarily caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi that are transmitted from one person to another. The most common type of bacterial pneumonia is pneumococcal pneumonia. 1. Pneumococcal pneumonia can be serious. If you are 65 or older, your risk of being hospitalized after getting pneumococcal pneumonia is 13 times greater than for younger adults aged 18 - 49, and for those requiring hospitalization, they have an average hospital stay of six days. In severe cases,

pneumococcal pneumonia can lead to death. Symptoms typically have an abrupt onset and may include coughing, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, chest pain, high fever, excessive sweating and shaking chills. 2. It doesn’t happen only during winter. Pneumococcal pneumonia is not a cold or the flu; you can get it any time of the year. Although rates of pneumococcal pneumonia tend to increase in the fall and winter months, cold air does not cause pneumonia, including pneumococcal pneumonia. Pneumococcal pneumonia can be spread by coughing or close contact with an infected person, no matter the season. 3. Even healthy adults are at increased risk. One of

the most important things to know is that for adults, risk increases with age as our immune system weakens and can’t respond as effectively to infection. Which means that otherwise healthy and active adults are at increased risk for pneumococcal pneumonia. 4. Chronic health conditions can also lead to increased risk. Other factors, like your lifestyle and certain chronic health conditions, can also increase your risk. Smoking, alcoholism and certain chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or a suppressed immune system, increase your risk for pneumococcal pneumonia. In fact, for adults 65 and older

living with COPD, the risk for contracting pneumococcal pneumonia is 7.7 times higher than their healthy counterparts, and those with asthma are at 5.9 times greater risk. 5. The good news: You may be able to reduce your personal risk. As a preventive healthcare measure, vaccines work by teaching the body’s immune system to recognize and defend against harmful viruses or bacteria before getting an infection, and reduce the chance of getting certain infectious diseases. But rates of vaccination among U.S. adults remain low, lagging well behind expert recommendations and federal goals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that all adults 65 years or older receive pneumococcal vaccination. If you are 65 or older, talk to your doctor to see if you are up to date on your CDC-recommended adult vaccinations, and take a personal risk assessment at Lung.org/pneumococcal, developed by the American Lung Association in partnership with Pfizer. This year, brush up on the signs and risk factors of pneumococcal pneumonia, as well as strategies for prevention, particularly as you age. StatePoint

Will You Be Able to Afford an Unexpected Health Crisis?

By Desert Star Staff Young people may not give much thought to the cost of an unexpected crisis, particularly when it comes to serious accidents or illnesses. Should an emergency occur, you don’t want to be caught off guard and have to cut back on other essentials or miss out on those special experiences that bring a smile to your face. Here are three things from Aflac that everyone, but particularly young adults, should consider: 1. Know what your insurance covers. As the cost of health care continues to shift to employees, it’s important for young adults to understand what their health coverage does and doesn’t cover. Keep in mind that major medical may not cover everything, so read the terms of your policy to get a better understanding and help prevent surprises down the road. 2. Consider your expenses. Today, many Americans rely heavily on technology to manage and enjoy their day-to-day lives. This is especially true of younger generations that use cellphones for everything from entertainment and www.desertstarweekly.com

navigation to maintaining their health and wellness with fitness and recipe apps. Many people are caught by surprise after a serious accident or illness and end up using their “digital fund” to help pay for bills that would otherwise set them back financially – meaning they may cancel TV subscriptions, smartphone data plans, cable, internet and music-streaming subscriptions. Being prepared for these situations can help you stay connected, no matter

what comes your way. That said, it is helpful to know which of these services are most meaningful to you so that you will know where to cut the cord if need be. 3. Be extra protected. Even if you have standard health insurance, you may want to consider adding an additional level of financial protection by opting for voluntary insurance. Such benefits options can help foot the bills associated with an illness or accident. For November 15, 2017

example, the supplemental insurance offered by Aflac can pay policyholders cash on eligible claims. Coverage for this insurance, available nationwide, is underwritten by American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus or New York. Having supplemental insurance can make it easier to stay on top of payments for subscription services, memberships and experiences that help you live life to the fullest. StatePoint

HOROSCOPES ARIES

Thoughts turn toward relationships - how they serve, tend and care for you, your expectations, how they free or restrict you. You also must consider how you serve others in relationships. Perhaps how you were tended and nurtured in your early years is mirrored in present relationships. Or maybe you don’t remember. Choose now, with awareness and depth, to make relationships more loving, kind and filled with intentions of Goodwill.

TAURUS Assess daily chores differently. What needs eliminating, what needs most tending. You ponder upon a totally different lifestyle that includes community, things sustainable, location, safety zones, source of water (through dowsing) and the best way to meet food source demands for many people. Meet with likeminded others also facing the unknown future. Research and plan simultaneously.

GEMINI It’s good to learn the new physics (the electric universe) so you can inform the rest of humanity which is your task. Like Taurus you are to be concerned about safety concerns seven generations beyond now and you need new (actually ancient) information in

order to re-educate humanity. Everything’s reorienting in our world. You must also. What do you understand about this shift and what could your plans be concerning the future?

CANCER Your tasks are always about family, your garden, property, farming, elders, parenting, home and, lastly, community. All are appropriate for you to focus on. It’s important to share with those close to you what you know about the present world situation. How is your living situation? Are you happy and what are you growing in your garden? Sustainability is on your mind.

LEO A new cycle of focused creativity, new life and a new identity begins. You are a leader. However, often, you’re not aware of your leadership or the responsibilities leaders have. In your community of peers, forming community wherever you are, others look to you for care, love and direction. If our present world reality changes, where would you go, what would you do? How would you prepare? What are you presently pursuing and is it useful for survival? Rest more.

VIRGO It’s most important to realize

that values are shifting and changing. And so, each of us must ponder upon what is of value? Do you feel of value to yourself and others? We are all very valuable in many different ways. What is the state of your money and resources? An economic reorientation is occurring. Are you one of the new world servers who can help create the new materialism? Are you tithing?

LIBRA A new life structure begins for you this autumn, slowly changing your sense of identity and artistic creative self. Profound new perceptions continue to occur concerning resources and communication with others. As world conditions enter new phases you will be called to a new state of healing. Nurture the art of kindness especially toward family. Honor them, along with the Ten Commandments (Aries Laws).

SCORPIO Mercury, as messenger, is influencing and informing you about the new ethics and ways of being needed to cultivate the new world civilization. These are big words. Mercury is your spiritual helper, developing your contact with the divine. Mercury works with the nine tests of Mars, pushing you to have intentions for Goodwill to create Right Relations creating compassion. These

words define your internal experiences. You are to be contemplative for a while.

SAGITTARIUS You might wonder who considers you a leader. Well, just about everyone who meets you. Knowing this allows you to experience confidence and freedom. You will add new friends to your circle. You will support projects that educate humanity. Beliefs change when you consider what your goals were previously and what they are now. To maintain equanimity, become a bit more nonconforming. Show worthwhile friends they are valuable. They are grateful for you.

CAPRICORN Are you wondering where your Capricorn leadership skills can emerge? Eventually, after much preparation, your community activity and gifts to humanity will be recognized and applauded. You will lean towards a new symmetry in the new year, wearing new plumes, curls, fashions and colors. Your art will nourish and be nourished. Remember, to honor excellence in your family and your friends. Lives change when excellence is supported. You are excellent!

your baby happy and calm, Graco hired West to offer the following soothing tips: Learn Baby’s Sleepy Cues: Most babies up to six months old can only be awake for about one to two hours before becoming overtired. Part of the learning curve is being able to recognize a child’s typical sleepy cues, so that you can move them to a safe sleep space as soon as possible. These signs may include yawning, staring,

fussiness, quieting down, losing interest in playtime, eye rubbing, and hand sucking. An alert or spirited child may move very quickly from happy to tired to overtired, so keeping one eye on the clock is also important. Be prepared to move straight to naptime or bedtime as soon as you see your child’s sleepy cues. a glimmer of a schedule forming where sleeping and waking are concerned. This is because your baby’s internal clock -- the circadian rhythm -- is starting to develop. Look for this pattern, along with your baby’s sleep cues, and create a soothing naptime and bedtime routine, which can include white noise, feeding and rocking. Nap timing and length are often the last components of a baby’s schedule to develop, so you might need to use more effort and additional soothing techniques in the afternoon when getting a little one to sleep can be particularly challenging. Use Motion to Calm: Motion is a favorite of babies for soothing because it likely reminds them of the sensations and security of their mother’s womb. Movement will often do what no other kind of soothing can do, so it’s a good technique to try. Rock your baby in your arms when you can, but if you need a break to get things done around the house or during times of extended fussiness, consider using

a swing. Since every baby is unique, try a swing that has multiple motion options, such as the Graco EveryWay Soother with Removable Rocker. With 16 soothing motions, six different speeds, two vibration settings and 15 songs and sounds, parents can create a personalized soothing environment to calm their little one. As an added benefit, the swing’s seat conveniently doubles as a removable rocker to keep baby happy and close by anywhere in the house. This swing is now exclusively available at Babies “R” Us. Understand Crankiness: Babies cry when they’re uncomfortable, bored, overstimulated and sleepy. There are a few things you can do to try and figure out why your baby is crying. Beyond the obvious diaper and mealtime reasons, try a change of scenery. You can also try dimming the lights, turning on white noise, placing your baby in a swing or offering them a pacifier. Being prepared to tailor your soothing strategies to your child’s individual needs can help provide both you and your baby more relaxing days and nights. StatePoint www.desertstarweekly.com

By Desert Star Staff Donald Trump seems disappointed that he has so far failed to make friends with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, saying he would never call Kim “short & fat,” in contrast to Pyongyang, which keep calling him names. With tensions running high over North Korea, Trump mocked his nemesis Kim, deviously calling him “short and fat,” after Pyongyang’s spokesman dubbed Trump a “dotard.” “Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me ‘old,’ when I would NEVER call him ‘short and fat?” Trump tweeted Saturday from Vietnam, as he continues his 12-day Asian tour. “Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend – and maybe someday that will happen!” Trump’s Asian tour has not been welcomed by the North Koreans, who view his visit to the region as a diplomatic

effort to garner enough support to attack North Korea. “Trump, during his visit, laid bare his true nature as destroyer of the world peace and stability and begged for a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula,” a spokesperson for the DPRK Foreign Ministry said Saturday. “The reckless remarks by a dotard like Trump can never frighten us or put a stop to our advance.” Pyongyang was responding to Trump’s statements made during his visit to South Korea Wednesday, where he said North Korea is “ruled as a cult,” based on a “deranged belief in the leader’s destiny to rule.” This is not the first time the leaders exchange ‘pleasantries’ about each other. Trump has repeatedly called Kim a “rocket man” while “dotard” has been used by the North Korean leader to reference Trump on more than one occasion. “I will surely and definitely

tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire,” Kim said in September, after the US president, in his maiden address at the UN, called Kim a “rocket man.” “The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea,” the US president said in his address. “Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself.” “A frightened dog barks louder,” Kim yapped back. “Action is the best option in treating the dotard who, hard of hearing, is uttering only what he wants to say.” Becoming friends with Kim would be “very, very nice” but he was not sure if it would ever happen, Trump clarified while talking to the press later Sunday. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “That might be a strange thing to happen but it’s a possibility,” Dai Quang. “If it did happen, But it could also be good for he said, standing beside it could be a good thing I can a lot of other places and be Vietnamese president Tran tell you, for North Korea... good for the rest the world.”

The official evening began with the requisite speeches, which led to the presentation of the 2017 Israel Film Festival Cinematic Achievement Award to two outstanding actors. American actor Jeffrey Tabor’s award was presented to him by award-winning Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer.

KMIR Lauren Day Desert Hot Springs, CA - As the marijuana industry grows, cultivation and dispensary owners have to find a way to safely move their money. A Desert Hot Springs company, Hard Car Security, is now helping businesses safely transport money and product. The company uses highly secured armored vehicles to pick up and deliver product. Todd Kleperis, the CEO or Hard Car Security said cash is a major problem for those in the marijuana industry. “We have dispensaries that are clients of ours that make millions of dollars in an average month, and they have a hard time moving that money because who wants to have a million dollars in the back safe of your office?” he said. Kleperis said the industry is mostly cash because marijuana is still illegal federally. “Banks won’t take anything that is

Greta Carter, the CEO of High Road, a company that helps people break into the marijuana business, said carrying cash is a major safety issue. “We see people get robbed and killed for $1,000 on the street, but yet you will see these cannabis businesses with tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. If we had banking like every other traditional business does, we would not be the target,” Carter explained. Tony Rivera, the COO of VetsLeaf, a new grow facility coming to Desert Hot Springs said it can be difficult when they are just trying to follow the rules. “It is frustrating. We’re trying to get everything done the right way, but sometimes you just have to sit and wait,” Rivera said. Carter hopes marijuana banking will get easier. “That’s the business banks are in

Festive Tips to Set a Holiday Mood at Home By Desert Star Staff It’s the most festive time of the year. Be sure to fill your home with the classic scents, sounds and sights of the holiday season in the following ways. 1. Start a Holiday Cookie Tradition. Bring the family together by baking cookies. Not only will it fill the home with a scrumptious aroma, it’s a fun activity that can involve everyone. Let kids get creative and decorate their own batch. In the spirt of giving, make some extras to share with friends, neighbors, teachers, coworkers and more. 2. Sing carols. Carol from the comfort of home. To experience a sense of community, organize an athome holiday sing-along. An elegant, compact digital

piano such as Casio’s Privia PX-770 is great for this seasonal tradition. Record your performances for posterity using its twotrack MIDI recorder. 3. Display greetings. For a festive feel, creatively decorate your home using your holiday cards with greetings from loved ones. String cards together and hang them in the doorway, decorate the fridge or display them on the mantle. 4. Get into the spirit. Frosty pine, sugar cookies, cinnamon and more. Fill your home with the spirit of the holidays using essential oils and candles of classic holiday scents. Or, keep it natural and boil cinnamon sticks with orange and cloves. 5. Behind the Pink Walls of The Annenberg Retreat In Rancho Mirage

Anne Rowe, Janice Lyle, Andrea Chaves, Granddaughter of artist Tomas Chavez Morado, Rebecca Hendrickson and Michael Hammond. Photo by Pat Krause. By Pamela Price The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage celebrated the opening of their latest exhibition with sixteen paintings and 21 sculptures created by two brothers, Jose and Tomas Chavez Morado of Guanajuato, Mexico. Their works of art are a retrospective of an artistic legacy. But there is more to a story of the two brothers and how they became an integral part of the vision of Walter and Lenore Annenberg’s vision of Sunnylands, which integrated Mexican culture with modernism.

Today visitors to Sunnylands can view the iconic half scale replica, a 20ft. High column the brothers designed for the Annenberg’s Mayan-themed mid-century modernism residence which was installed in 1968 while on a scheduled tour. The inspiration for this column is legendary, as it evolved from “a trip to Mexico made in 1967 by Walter and Lenore Annenberg at which time they visited the original 40-foot tall version. This towering work of art was installed on the patio of Museo Nacional

The current exhibition, curated fifty years after the Annenberg viewed the viewed the original column is “ adorned with carved relief symbols representing the story of Mexico from its preHispanic past to the 20th century It can be seen on scheduled tours. However, on November 12th, at a Sunnyland’s Family Day event there were free tours to view the column . This offered a rare opportunity for the public

to view the 20-foot column installed at the legendary Annenberg residence. Activities included the creation of a community mural with local artist Luiz Castro. A private event held at the Sunnylands Center & Gardens was held the day before offered a preview of the exhibition, entitled, “Carved Narrative: Los Hermanos Chavez Morado”. An 80page book by Anne Rowe expertly describes the exhibit revealing the link between the Annenberg’s “lavish 200acre desert oasis” and the role of the Mayan influence

In Florida, all eyes on Puerto Rican voters after Maria By Adriana Gomez Licon MIAMI - Javier Gonzalez has joined a human tide of more than 130,000 U.S. citizens arriving in Florida since Hurricane Maria wrecked Puerto Rico, grateful for a place to start over but resenting how their island has been treated since the disaster. More than a million Puerto Ricans - about 5 percent of Florida’s population - already call the state home, and given the outrage many feel over President Donald Trump’s handling of the storm, political observers say this voting bloc could loosen the Republican Party’s hold on this battleground state. Gonzalez, 38, saw the storm destroy the restaurant he opened with his father five years ago. Without power or reliable water, he became violently ill from food poisoning for three weeks. Finally, he packed his bags, determined to make his future in Miami instead. “There is resentment, and we feel abandoned compared to Texas and Florida,” Gonzalez said. “We were desperate for help.” Like any Puerto Rican, Gonzalez can vote in all elections now that he’s moved to the mainland. He doesn’t plan to register for any party, but he follows the news and understands their platforms. He’s aware of Trump’s tweets. “It’s not right that we’ve fought from World War I, to Vietnam and Afghanistan and that the first thing the president says is: ‘You have a large debt, big problems and have cost us millions,’” Gonzalez added. Puerto Ricans are not the gift to the Republican Party

that the anti-Castro Cuban diaspora has been historically. They’ve tended to favor Democrats, given their support for public education and social services. Around 70 percent of Florida’s non-Cuban Latinos voted for Hillary Clinton. Both parties are courting the new arrivals to Florida, which Trump won last year by just 112,000 votes out of 9.6 million cast. “There is an intent to grab those who are coming,” said Rep. Robert Asencio, a Democrat of Puerto Rican descent who represents Miami in the Florida House and leads the Miami-Dade Committee for Hurricane Maria Relief. “A lot of my colleagues say they are not politicizing this, but there is an effort to bring people either to the Democratic or the Republican side,” Asencio said. Newcomers must register by next July 30 to vote in 2018 for a new governor to replace term-limited Republican Gov. Rick Scott and choose Florida’s congressional delegation, now 11 Democrats and 16 Republicans. Democratic U.S. Senator Bill Nelson also defends his seat next year, and Scott, who has been applauded for helping evacuees, is expected to challenge him in what could be a close race. Scott set up three disaster relief centers to help arrivals with driver’s licenses, job searches, and disaster aid applications. Scott also asked education officials to waive public school enrollment rules for evacuated islanders, and to give college-bound evacuees the same tuition breaks state residents get. Asencio calls Scott’s actions “damage control,”

given the multimillionaire governor’s close relationship with Trump, who offended Puerto Ricans by tweeting they wanted “everything to be done for them” rather than taking responsibility for their own recovery. They also resent Trump’s rating of his own disaster response as a “10 out of 10,” blaming his administration for delays that exposed their families to illness and misery. The island still faces a lengthy and painful recovery after the storm took down the entire electrical grid, leaving hospitals in the dark and closing schools for several weeks. Initial projections that 95 percent of the people will have power restored by year’s end now look optimistic. Maria’s evacuees are following waves of people frustrated by Puerto Rico’s unemployment and debt crisis who settled in Central Florida, shifting from New York, the favored destination of previous generations. Of the more than 140,000 islanders estimated to have left since the storm,

more than 130,000 went to Florida, where Puerto Ricans may soon displace Cubans as the largest Latino group. State Rep. Rene Plasencia, a Republican from Orlando, predicts that Scott’s warm welcome will leave a bigger impression on the newcomers than any Trump tweets. “For whatever people think of the president, you have to take into consideration the actions of Governor Scott,” said Plasencia, whose mother and wife are from Puerto Rico. “People aren’t making decisions out of a sequence of tweets ... It makes good news, but it doesn’t make political shifts.” Billionaires Charles and David Koch also are involved, funding the Libre Initiative, which welcomed hundreds of evacuees on the first cruise ship to arrive from San Juan. Cesar Grajales, who lobbies for Libre, says they’re helping evacuees learn English and connect with community and business leaders. Democrats hope

Colombian-American Annette Taddeo’s recent underdog state Senate victory against a well-funded Republican in South Florida shows her anti-Trump message will keep resonating. “It is a strong indication that voters are paying attention, and they are angry,” said Cristobal Alex, president of the Latino Victory Project. “We wouldn’t have the devastation and abandonment of Puerto Rico without Donald Trump. People will look at that.” On the island, Puerto Rico’s lack of statehood means they can’t vote in general presidential elections, and can only send a nonvoting representative to Congress. On the mainland, they’ll have more power. “I know for a fact that we are well educated and we are going to come here to work,” Gonzalez said. “And yes, we are going to make a voice. We are going to make a bigger voice than before.” Source: KMIR/AP

of their settlement. Co-director of the Duke Wrongful Convictions Clinic Jim Coleman explains. “Somebody who comes along and offers them money in exchange for an agreement in which, if they recover, the lawyer will be paid out of the recovery, they’re sort of easy marks for that kind of an arrangement,” he explains. Recently, Henry McCollum, who spent three decades on North Carolina’s death row for a wrongful conviction, became the latest victim of the practice. A judge threw out a settlement that would have allowed his lawyers to claim $400,000 of the $1 million settlement in payments from investigators in the case. Additionally, McCollum’s lawyers claimed half of a $750,000 payout from the state. Coleman says McCollum

also is intellectually disabled - a condition that makes him even more vulnerable after spending 30 years in prison with little education or real-world skill training. “In prison, there’s no effort to prepare them for eventual release,” he says. “The result is that, when they come out, they don’t have the skills to deal with dayto-day living, and they’re often desperate financially.” Coleman says the judge’s ruling in McCollum’s case is unusual, and often the court chooses not to intervene, even in instances where an arrangement may be unfair to the wrongfully convicted. The Duke Wrongful Convictions Clinic investigates claims of innocence made by incarcerated felons, helps manage their cases and gathers documentation.

Some Unscrupulous Lawyers Target Exonerated Inmates in NC

A judge threw out a financial agreement between Henry McCollum and his attorney after it was found he was wrongfully convicted by the state. Stellar Soundtracks and Broadway Cast Recordings With the holiday season in full swing, now is the time to begin thinking about the slew of wonderful releases featuring new and historic film soundtracks and memorable Broadway cast recordings worthy of giving as gifts or adding to your own music library. SOUNDTRACKS

Title: Raiders of the Lost Ark (Concord Records) Composer: John Williams Tell me more: Released on 180-gram vinyl pressed at RTI (Record Technology Incorporated), the twoLP album version of John Williams’ “Raiders of the Lost Ark” sounds better than ever. Released back on June 2, 2017, this new vinyl version of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is housed in a two-pocket gatefold jacket featuring original stills and artwork from the 1981 action film starring actor Harrison Ford. For fans of the talented Williams and of “Raiders of the Ark” in particular, this wonderful title includes audio cues not previously available on the original soundtrack LP. This version of the album follows the track list of the 2008 expanded edition, previously only available on CD. Information: ConcordMusicGroup.com.

Picture Soundtrack for “Battle of the Sexes” really immerses the listener in the feel of the characters and story of the fabled 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (played by Emma Stone) and ex-men’s champion Bobby Riggs (portrayed by actor Steve Carell). Even if you haven’t yet seen the Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris-directed “The Battle of the Sexes,” the score is a wonderful listen. And the mix of affecting songs also works, particularly the classic George Harrison cut “What Is Life” and new gem written and performed for the film “If I Dare” by songstress Sara Bareilles. Information: SonyMusicMasterworks.com/.

Title: Tulip Fever (Sony Classical) Composer: Danny Elfman Tell me more: Those who love the whimsical side of composer Danny Elfman’s personality (think of his unforgettable scores for “Peewee’s Big Adventure” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas”), as well as his more nuanced and romantic personality (as evidenced by his work on the Oscar-nominated “Big Fish” and “Good Will Hunting”) will find both on center stage on his potent work on the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of “Tulip Fever.” The lovely “Maria’s Theme,” “Lost” and “It’s Done” display a nuanced touch perfect for the romantic heart of “Tulip Fever” (the film is based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Moggach), while the distant “The Unveiling” and sweeping “A Storm is Coming” explore other musical corners to bring additional depth to the score. Information: SonyMusicMasterworks.com/.

Title: Battle of the Sexes (Sony Classical) Composer: Nicholas Britell; songs by Sara Bareilles, Elton John, George Harrison, more Tell me more: From the opening track (Alfred Newman’s iconic music that greets the opening of any 20th Century Fox film) to composer Nicholas Britell’s title themes for the main characters (“Billie Jean Title: The West Wing (Varèse King” and “Bobby Riggs”) and Sarabande Records) a mix of , the Original Motion Composer: W.G.

Snuffy Walden Tell me more: If you are thinking of holding off on a decision to purchase the limited edition audio CD release of composer W.G. Snuffy Walden’s “The West Wing,” don’t. The 6th installment of Varèse Sarabande Records’ “We Hear You” series, the Original Television Soundtrack for the groundbreaking TV series “The West Wing” is a 2-CD set and will be limited to 2,000 units. Walden won the Emmy for the timeless Outstanding Original Main Title - Theme Music (the Aaron Sorkin-created series was nominated for 18 Emmy Award at the end of its debut season in 2000, and won nine including Best Drama Series). Information: VareseSarabande.com.

Title: War for the Planet of the Apes (Sony Classical) Composer: Michael Giacchino Tell me more: Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino has scored a number of memorable soundtracks, so it’s no surprise he once again had plenty of symphonic magic to add courtesy of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of the summer blockbuster “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Whether mining tense moments (“Assault of the Earth,” “Don’t Luca Now”), showcasing the dramatic (“The Bad Ape Bagatelle”) or enhancing more tender moments in a film (“Exodus Wounds,” “Koba Dependent”), Giacchino’s lavish work shines across the powerful score. Information: SonyMusicMasterworks.com/.

MUSICAL CAST RECORDINGS

Title: Original London Cast Recording of Dreamgirls (Masterworks Broadway) Composer: Henry Krieger Tell me more: If you are one of the countless fans who have seen or plan to see the musical production of “Dreamgirls” playing at the Savoy Theatre in London through June 2, 2018, get the “Original London Cast Recording of Dreamgirls.” Recorded live at the Savoy Theatre in February 2017, the 2-CD release features the cast and 14-member band performing the entire show and includes rousing versions of memorable songs such as “One Night Only,” “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” and “Listen.” Information: Dreamgirlswestend.com.

Title: Hello, Dolly! 2017 Broadway Cast Recording (Masterworks Broadway) Composer: Jerry Herman Tell me more: The new Broadway Cast Recording of “Hello, Dolly!” features threetime Grammy Award-winning singer-actress Bette Midler in the title role of Dolly Gallagher Levi. Having premiered earlier this year on Broadway, the excellent cast recording features 16 tracks featuring not only Midler but Emmy Award

winner David Hyde Pierce (as Horace Vandergelder), twotime Tony Award nominee Gavin Creel (Cornelius Hackl), Kate Baldwin (Irene Molloy), Melanie Moore (Ermengarde), Jennifer Simard (Ernestina) and Will Burton (Ambrose Kemper). Information: MasterworksBroadway.com. Title: SpongeBob SquarePants — The New

Musical (Masterworks Broadway) Composers: Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, They Might Be Giants, more Tell me more: With a mix of original songs written specifically for the Broadway musical, as well as several classic tracks (including the dazzling David Bowie/Brian Eno collaboration “No Control”), “SpongeBob SquarePants — The New Musical” is sheer fun. The range of material matches the zany spirit of the “SpongeBob SquarePants” world. Contributing songs that complete the hero’s tale where SpongeBob SquarePants seeks to save Bikini Bottom includes the decidedly Americana-tinged “BFF” (written by Plain White T’s), electronica-dance number “(Just a) Simple Sponge” (penned by Panic! At the Disco), theatrical “Daddy Knows Best” (penned by Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros), the beautiful “Tomorrow Is” (by The Flaming Lips) and spirited “Poor Pirates” (by Sara Bareilles). “SpongeBob SquarePants — The New Musical” began its run at the Palace Theater on Broadway on Nov. 6, 2017. Information: MasterworksBroadway.com.

AMENDED NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: ELISHA A. HOLGUIN CASE NO. INP1700709 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of ELISHA A. HOLGUIN. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by GAYLYNN HOLGUIN in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that GAYLYNN HOLGUIN be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: November 28, 2017 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46200 Oasis Street, Indio, CA 92201. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Petitioner: Gaylynn Holguin, 2993 N. Biskra Road, Palm Springs, CA 92262-2411 (760) 272-5049. Publish November 15, 17, 22, 2017. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site, www. nationwideposting.com, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9987-6024. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. ‘Time is running out’: 15,000 researchers issue doomsday warning

By Desert Star Staff More than 15,000 researchers from around the world have signed an update to a 1992 ‘doomsday’ document, warning that “time is running out” in the battle to sustain the future health of the planet. In 1992, the Union of Concerned Scientists released the “World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity” notice. Signed at the time by a number of Nobel laureates in science, the 25-year-old open letter outlined that mankind is on a “collision course” with the natural word. “If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms,

and may so alter the living world that it will be unable to sustain life in the manner that we know,” the statement read. Two and a half decades on, the future of the planet appears even worse, according to the update. Drafted by William J Ripple, a professor of ecology at Oregon State University, the second notice is being backed by 15,364 scientists from 184 countries. The new warning, entitled “World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice” and published in the Bioscience journal, says that humanity has failed to make sufficient progress in solving its environmental challenges. “Soon it will be too

late to shift course away from our failing trajectory, and time is running out. We must recognize, in our day-to-day lives and in our governing institutions, that Earth with all its life is our only home,” the update reads. The damage inflicted on the Earth in the past 25 years, include the increase of socalled pollution “dead zones” in oceans and the destruction of 129 million hectares of forest. The warning also states that the ten warmest years on record have come since 1998, while collectively the number of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals has dropped a dramatic 58 percent since 1970. Among the bleakness,

Letter from concerned scientists urges mankind to clean up its act before it is too late. / Reuters there’s one thing humanity appears to have done right, and that is the reduction of ozone-depleting emissions.

This, according to the notice, is proof that “we can make a positive change.”

Puerto Rico Invites Travelers to be Part of the Island’s Comeback

By Desert Star Staff SAN JUAN, -- As the holidays approach, Americans are seeking ways to make a difference during this time of the year. And, many wonder how they can help their fellow Americans in Puerto Rico. Responding to the high demand from loyal travelers wanting to help, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) today announced the first phase of its meaningful travel campaign with the launch of a series of “Rebuild Days” at multiple attractions - from parks to historic sites through the end of the year. Kicking off the series will be a cleanup at Camuy Cave Park, the third largest underground cave system in the world, located in the north region of the Island, on November 16-18, beginning at 7:00AM EST; supplies and tools will be provided for all participants. A beautiful natural wonder with the Camuy River running through it, the Camuy Cave features ceilings over 10 stories high and boasts natural works of art from the spectacular stalagmites and stalactites found within. “Good Jobs” Now Require More Than a High School Diploma

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -Almost two-thirds of workers in California don’t have a bachelor’s degree - but only 37 percent of them have a “good job,” according to a new report. Researchers from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce teamed up with JP Morgan Chase to study the kinds of jobs that help expand a solid middle class - defined as jobs that start at $35,000 a year, with a median salary of $55,000. Report co-author Neil Ridley, state initiative director with Georgetown, said since 1991, 34 states - including California - have added good jobs for those without bachelors’ degrees. “Good jobs for workers without a bachelor’s degree have increasingly gone to workers with more than a high school education,” Ridley said; “so, they’ve recently gone to workers with an associate’s degree, especially.” The study also found California lost 424,000 good

manufacturing jobs since 1991, but made up more than that in skilled services industries, such as healthcare and financial services. It also showed the capacity to expand the middle class depended on each state’s ability to match the skills of young people entering the workforce with the increasingly high-tech needs of industry. Kathy Booth is a senior research associate with WestEd, an education policy nonprofit. She said it’s no longer enough to work hard and be “good with your hands” - now, everyone needs to be tech savvy. “Now all of that work happens through computer programs,” Booth said. “And so, you can’t have somebody who’s just good with a hammer or good with a sander. They actually have to be able to program a computer that’s cutting complicated shapes in a variety of materials. So, even things that we think of as ‘blue collar jobs’ really require that people have a more advanced education.”

Wall Street Wheeler - Dealers On Stage At Lincoln Center Theatre By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Ayad Akhtar, (“Disgraced”) highlights in his fictional play, set in 1985, what our current President claims he is doing or going to do when it comes to draining the Washington D.C. ‘swamp’ of insider trading, manipulators and financial sharks and lobbyists who roam the halls of Wall Street and Capitol Hill. The ‘it’ is this case has a familiar ring to it. In 2008, it was the crash of Wall Street that brought our economy to a near-paralyzing standstill. There was then as now, plenty of blame to go around. Akhtar’s play, crisply directed by Doug Hughes, is a searing indictment of financial perfidy and recklessness and its seeming disdain for the rule of law when ‘it’ comes too close to getting in the way of the art of the all-important deal. There are many echoes of both the 1987 Michael Douglas film “Greed”, whose mantra that ‘greed is good’ along with Martin Scorsese’s 2013 take on “The Wolf of Wall Street” where sharks and corporate raiders are seen behaving badly, is chillingly still alive and well. The story, in short, revolves around a highflying, risk-taking corporate raider Robert Merkin (Steven Pasquale in a potent performance). Merkin is known as the King of junk bonds, and the author of the financial term “debt is an asset” concept which is always a key component in fashioning his multi-million deals. He will do anything; sell out his partners, his life-long friends, and

colleagues, even his family in his quest to become top-dog on Wall Street. These top denizens who live in the shark tank have no loyalties or scruples. They are only interested in the pursuit of money. Lots of it. Hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake. If the truth be known, these players don’t really need the money. They have plenty. It’s the adrenaline rush that comes from deals dreamed up by these driven, craven, men and women in an effort to become the top dog that obsesses them. It boggles the mind of those of us who know very little about how the world of finance works and the numbers generated. In the words of some “it’s complicated” … who knew? The set design by John Lee Beatty is eye-catching, in that the ‘cyc’ becomes a gigantic replica of the stocks and bonds read-out board at NYSE. The set is a series of all glass doors and a set of sliding platforms that neatly allow the cast of twentythree talented performers to move in and out their various character locations that switch from Merkin’s office, home, and those of his team members, to his undercover/ mole associates, to the offices and homes of his corporate take-over opponents. Each group having a place to discuss (for the audience) the tactics of deal-making and betrayal when it comes to one another in their quest for Wall Street domination. According to playwright Akhtar, it’s not easy being a wheeler-dealer living in the pressure cooker environment that is Wall Street. Not only is “JUNK” a hotbed of moneymaking, it’s also a place where

Joey Slotnick (center) and the company of Lincoln Center Theater’s prduction of JUNK. Photo by T. Charles Erickson sexual favors are exchanged for information and advantage, and again we’re ‘shocked to find out that gambling is going on’ at Wall Street and in broker offices. Aah, but there is always a price to be paid for the lack of honesty, decorum and marital infidelity, but no more spoiler alerts here. Akhtar’s plot is intriguing, and his dialogue for his cast of solid actors has the ring of authenticity. In large casts, there are always standouts. “JUNK” is no

exception. Sharp, solid, performances are rendered by Ito Aghayere as Jacqueline Blount, Michael Siberry, as Leo Tresler, Miriam Silverman as Amy Merkin, Joey Slotnick as Boris Pronsky, Rick Holmes as Thomas Everson, JR. Teresa Avia Lim as Judy Chen, Matthew Rauch as Israel Peterman. The creative team led by director Hughes includes mood lighting by designer Ben Stanton that allows the audiences to see the

costumes designed by Catherine Zuber and the on-stage projections of 59 Productions. If you are planning to be in NYC over the Holidays, consider catching a performance of this potent production. “JUNK”, is a slick production loaded with terrific performances. The show performs at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre in Lincoln Center, New York City, through January 7, 2018
