Climate Change A new report says the conversion of wildlife habitat to cropland from 2008 to 2012 released carbon into the atmosphere equivalent to six coal-fired power plants per year. (belfasteileen/iStockphoto) By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The federal mandate to blend corn ethanol into gasoline has contributed greatly to climate change, according to a new report. Researchers from the University of Wisconsin looked at the conversion of wildlife habitat to cropland and found that disturbing the soil releases
huge amounts of carbon - equivalent to emissions from 20 million additional cars on the road per year. Collin O’Mara, study co-author and president and chief executive of the National Wildlife Federation, said turning pristine land into fields also harms insects, birds and other animals. “In the years following
enactment of the mandate in 2007, more than 7 million acres of wildlife habitat were plowed under,” O’Mara said. “This is grasslands, and wetlands and other habitat that threatens monarch butterflies, bees, ducks and other wildlife.” The report was presented Wednesday at the America’s Grasslands Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. O’Mara said he’d
By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. – Press groups and photojournalist Alexei Wood say there are troubling implications to Wood’s trial on charges of multiple felonies. Wood stands charged with six felonies and two misdemeanors in a Washington, D.C. Superior Court. He says the video he shot of rioting during President Donald Trump’s inauguration show he did nothing wrong, but
prosecutors are accusing him of rioting just for being there. Wood says that should be troubling to reporters and anyone who believes in a free and aggressive press. “I’m following resistance movements,” he explains. “That is my beat, and I’m really good at it, and that’s an absolutely legitimate beat. And it’s, it’s being criminalized.” Wood faces up to 60 years in prison. Prosecutors say he conspired with the rioters
and therefore also is to blame for the attacks on police and property destruction committed by others in the group, even if he did not do those things himself. More than 200 people, including half a dozen journalists, were penned in and arrested during the protests on Jan. 20, which were largely peaceful. All the other journalists and all but a handful of

Cyclist fired for giving Trump the finger to get over $80k By Desert Star Staff A cyclist sacked by her employers for flipping off Donald Trump’s presidential motorcade as it drove by looks set to receive more than $80,000 from a GoFundMe campaign. Juli Briskman was out cycling in Sterling, Virginia, when she made the gesture towards the US president as his vehicle left Trump National Golf Course. The image went viral and Briskman was later fired after bringing the incident to the attention of her employer, Akima LLC, an engineering company. Now a GoFundMe campaign has been set up in Briskman’s honor, describing her as an “inspiration.” So far more than $80,000 has been
raised in $5, $20, and $100 donations. All proceeds of the $100,000 goal fund are expected to go to Briskman in an effort to alleviate any financial woes she may have. Responding to the news of the collection, Briskman said she never imagined a “one-finger salute” would result in her contract being terminated. Highlighting her concerns at covering bills, Briskman thanked people for their support. She said: “I was shocked and worried about many things: How would I pay for healthcare? How much money do I have in my savings to cover our mortgage and general living expenses in Northern Virginia and how long will it last?”

By Desert Star Staff The most senior Senate Republican is siding with several women alleging sexual misconduct against a candidate from his own party, as a fifth woman claims that Alabama Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore tried to rape her when she was a teenager. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) told reporters that Moore should be expelled from the Senate even if he wins the upcoming December 12 special election. “I believe the women,” McConnell said, according to NBC News. “I think he should step aside.” Moore fired back at McConnell, saying that he is the one who should step down because he “has failed conservatives and must be replaced.” During the September race to fill the Alabama senate seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, McConnell supported Moore’s opponent, Luther Strange. Former White House chief strategist and Breitbart News executive chairman Steve Bannon, who is on a mission to oust McConnell from his leadership post, accused McConnell, the GOP establishment, Democrats and the Washington Post of carrying out a “coordinated hit” on Moore. “This is just another
desperate attempt by Mitch McConnell to keep power, and it’s not going to work,” Bannon said in an interview with SiriusXM host Alex Marlow, according to Breitbart. “This is an orchestrated hit from the Uniparty.” Last week, the Washington Post published a report detailing the accounts of four women who accused the former state Supreme Court Judge of sexual assault. All the women said they were between the ages of 14 and 18 when Moore allegedly assaulted them. Moore has denied the allegations, which he called “the very definition of fake news.” “These allegations are completely false and are a desperate political attack by the National Democrat Party and the Washington Post on this campaign,” Moore said, according to The Hill. In the immediate aftermath of the story, Senators John McCain (R-Arizona) and Jeff Flake (R-Arizona), who have both made fiery speeches against President Donald Trump, said the report was enough to call for Moore to drop out of the race. On Friday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that Trump, who supported Moore’s opponent in the election, has called on him to step down “if these allegations are true.” “Like most Americans,
the President believes that we cannot allow a mere allegation – in this case, one from many years ago – to destroy a person’s life,” Huckabee Sanders said. “However, the president also believes that if these allegations are true, Judge Moore will do the right thing and step aside.” A number of other lawmakers have also withdrawn their endorsements for Moore and called for him to step down, including Senators Bob Corker (R-Tennessee) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), both of whom have made recent statements against the Trump administration. On Monday, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Cory Gardner (R-Colorado) said the Senate should expel Moore even if he wins the special election next month. “I believe the individuals speaking out against Roy Moore spoke with courage and truth, proving he is unfit to serve in the United States Senate and he should not run for office,” Gardner said, according to the Huffington Post. “If he refuses to withdraw and wins, the Senate should vote to expel him, because he does not meet the ethical and moral requirements of the United States Senate.” The last time a senator was successfully expelled was in 1862, when Senator Jesse Bright (D-Indiana) was charged with supporting the Confederate rebellion.
On Monday, Beverly Young Nelson came forward with new allegations that Moore sexually assaulted her when she was 16 years old. Nelson said that in the late 19‘70’s, Moore, who was in his 30’s, came to the restaurant where she worked and offered to give her a ride home. Instead of driving her home, Nelson said Moore drove her to a deserted area and locked the door to keep her inside. Nelson said that Moore touched her breasts, tried to pull off her shirt and pushed her head toward his crotch. “I thought that he was going to rape me,” Nelson said, according to the Washington Post. When Moore stopped, Nelson said that he told her to stay quiet, adding

truly troubling trend,” he states. Wood also is a new kind of journalist – one delivering raw video to the public, without going through a regular news organization. But while Wood says the prosecutors accuse him
of “advertising anarchy,” he feels what he does is the truest form of a free press. “If people want to critique my professionalism, I’ve got no qualms with that,” he states. “And I live-streamed it and it’s out there for the

After the most recent allegation, Flake said that if he was a voter in Alabama, he would rather vote for a Democrat than vote for Moore. “If the choice is between Roy Moore and a Democrat —– the Democrat, no doubt,” Flake said, according to the Washington Examiner. “I would literally — ... if I were in Alabama —, I would run to the polling place to vote for the Democrat.”

Educators: Obesity Impacting National Security By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa educators and the American Heart Association say poor childhood health - including obesity rates has reached a critical level that’s impacting far more than just the individuals whose health is at risk. Brian Rhoads, a physical education curriculum leader with West Des Moines Community Schools, says it’s becoming a national security issue. “We’re not having students leave our school systems in a position where they can join the military because they’re not physically healthy to do that,” he laments.

The federal Every Student Succeeds Act, which replaces No Child Left Behind, is in its first year which means states have an initial opportunity to present a plan addressing student assessments, school accountability, funding, and support for struggling schools. The words “physical education” only appear once in Iowa’s lengthy draft and they are only used in reference to elementary school standards. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1 in 4 young adults are too heavy to serve in our military. Research from the American Heart Association shows that 95 percent of parents with children under 18 want physical education to be part of their child’s overall education. Rhoads says he’s concerned, however, that the issue is not being prioritized and resources could actually decrease further. “I don’t think that the legislature is going to
appropriate funds for a program that doesn’t have standards in the state,” he warns. “Until that’s in place, I don’t think we’re going to have the traction to move forward in a way that we really want.”
In recent years, state budget woes have led to physical education curriculum cuts. According to the CDC, the Department of Defense, our nation’s largest employer, spends about one-point-
five billion dollars annually in obesity-related health care costs for current and former service members and their families, as well as costs to replace unfit personnel.
By Desert Star Staff EVART, Mich. – As a judge and state officials prepare to make decisions that will impact whether the world’s largest water bottler can increase pumping out of its well near Evart, one group is calling on the state to immediately bottle up the whole operation. Nestlé has asked the state for a permit to increase its pumping at the White Pine Springs well to 400 gallons per minute and will face off against Osceola Township in court on Wednesday over the
construction of the booster station needed to do so. But Peggy Case, president of Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation, says her group has proof the current pumping rate is violating Michigan law. “The law says you can’t do environmental damage, and we have proof that this well has already done environmental damage, even at 150 gallons per minute,” she says. While Nestlé claims the increased pumping, rate would not harm local
wetlands, lakes or streams, the group conducted a temperature and depth analysis and found the water level is now too low to support fish, a drastic change from a state study done in 2000 that showed abundant trout in the area. While the state is expected to rule on the permit soon, the group has sent a letter to Gov. Rick Snyder and Attorney General Bill Schuette, calling on them to shut down the pumping pending further review. Case argues that the damage that has already been done is so severe, it is visible to the naked eye. “People living along these streams have noticed that the streams have changed their courses, and that there are
alien grasses growing where they didn’t used to be, and that the water level in the culverts is way lower than it once was,” she explains. “These are all obvious examples of damage.” Under Michigan’s “reasonable use” standard for groundwater extraction, property owners such as Nestlé can pump groundwater for free, with only a small paperwork fee, as long as the extraction does not harm the environment or dry up neighboring wells. Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation will hold a vigil on Wednesday outside the Osceola Township courthouse, where the company will attempt to make its case for the booster station.
Military leaders say in the last decade, it’s been harder to recruit soldiers, due to health declines and rising weight among the nation’s youth. (Joenomias/Pixabay)

edge of the rain forest. “For so long, we’ve heard about the importance of tropical rain forests as an important carbon reserve,” Spawn said. “And this research really emphasizes that now is the time to start also recognizing the importance of carbon reserves here at home and the impacts that we’ve been having on them.” Study co-author Tyler Lark said the carbon released from soil is harder to replace than carbon stored in trees.
“The difference is that those emissions in the tropics are primarily from trees, so it’s easier to re-sequester that lost carbon,” Lark explained. “On the other hand, the emissions we see here in the U.S. are primarily from soil carbon stores which could take hundreds of years or more to replenish and may never be fully restored.” Lark suggested that the government require farms to map and track biofuel feed stock, to ensure that fewer acres of undisturbed lands are converted for crops.

By Pamela Price The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage celebrated the opening of their latest exhibition with sixteen paintings and 21 sculptures created by two brothers, Jose and Tomas Chavez Morado of Guanajuato, Mexico. Their works of art are a retrospective of an artistic legacy. But there is more to a story of the two brothers and how they became an integral part of the vision of Walter and Lenore Annenberg’s vision of Sunnylands, which integrated Mexican culture with modernism.
Today visitors to Sunnylands can view the iconic half scale replica, a 20ft. High column the brothers designed for the Annenberg’s Mayan-themed mid-century modernism residence which was installed in 1968 while on a scheduled tour. The inspiration for this column is legendary, as it evolved from “a trip to Mexico made in 1967 by Walter and Lenore Annenberg at which time they visited the original 40-foot tall version. By Desert Star Staff Donald Trump seems disappointed that he has so far failed to make friends with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, saying he would never call Kim “short & fat,” in contrast to Pyongyang, which keep calling him names. With tensions running high over North Korea, Trump mocked his nemesis Kim, deviously calling him “short and fat,” after Pyongyang’s spokesman dubbed Trump a “dotard.” “Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me ‘old,’ when I would NEVER call him ‘short and fat?” Trump tweeted Saturday from Vietnam, as he continues his 12-day Asian tour. “Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend – and maybe someday that will happen!” Trump’s Asian tour has not been welcomed by the North Koreans, who view his visit to the region as a diplomatic
effort to garner enough support to attack North Korea. “Trump, during his visit, laid bare his true nature as destroyer of the world peace and stability and begged for a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula,” a spokesperson for the DPRK Foreign Ministry said Saturday. “The reckless remarks by a dotard like Trump can never frighten us or put a stop to our advance.” Pyongyang was responding to Trump’s statements made during his visit to South Korea Wednesday, where he said North Korea is “ruled as a cult,” based on a “deranged belief in the leader’s destiny to rule.” This is not the first time the leaders exchange ‘pleasantries’ about each other. Trump has repeatedly called Kim a “rocket man” while “dotard” has been used by the North Korean leader to reference Trump on more than one occasion. “I will surely and definitely
tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire,” Kim said in September, after the US president, in his maiden address at the UN, called Kim a “rocket man.” “The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea,” the US president said in his address. “Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself.” “A frightened dog barks louder,” Kim yapped back. “Action is the best option in treating the dotard who, hard of hearing, is uttering only what he wants to say.” Becoming friends with Kim would be “very, very nice” but he was not sure if it would ever happen, Trump clarified while talking to the press later Sunday. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “That might be a strange thing to happen but it’s a possibility,” Dai Quang. “If it did happen, But it could also be good for he said, standing beside it could be a good thing I can a lot of other places and be Vietnamese president Tran tell you, for North Korea... good for the rest the world.”

England’s royals scrutinized again as Charles is finally crowned By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Patience it is said is a virtue. If that is a truism then Prince Charles, son of Queen Elizabeth II must be a saint. Charles, Prince of Wales, has been first in line to become England’s King for sixty-five years; longer than any other heir in United Kingdom history - which goes back to the reign of William the Conqueror, in 1066. But all that changed in 2014 when British playwright Mike Bartlett penned his controversial, fantasy/ fictional play “King Charles III”, which Bartlett labeled as a “future history play”. After all, Queen Elizabeth II at age 91, is still firmly ensconced on the throne. “King Charles III, is currently on-stage at the venerable 100-year-old Pasadena Playhouse as of Sunday, November 12th. Some of the Shakespearelike quality of the text that combines verse and modern vernacular, make this intriguing production directed by Michael Michetti, a provocative evening in the theatre that is resonating with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. NY Times’ senior theatre critic Ben Brantley put his stamp of approval on the New York production going onto say “…the play is a dazzling presumptuous drama … a flat out brilliant portrait of a monarchy in crisis.” After seven seasons of the blockbuster TV series “Masterpiece Theatre” on NPR, there are a lot of Anglophiles in America and a sizeable number of them live in Southern California. The Pasadena Playhouse production company features sixteen actors: eight principals, and eight supporting actors plus a dedicated ensemble punctuated with glorious original music composed by Peter Bayne and recorded by the Pasadena Master Chorale. The play begins with a procession of mourner/ singers coming down the playhouse aisles on their way to Buckingham Palace following the funeral services of Queen Elizabeth II. The scene is one of muted pomp and circumstance. Prince Charles (Jim Abele) is now technically the King, but is yet to be crowned in ceremonies at Westminster Abbey. The story explores the events that confront the new King, and the Royal family: Duchess Camilla (Laura Gardner), Prince William (Adam Haas Hunter), Duchess Catherine (Meghan Andrews), Prince Harry (Dylan Saunders) await to see what the new king and his advisor Reiss (Mark Capri) and his Prime Minister (J. Paul Boehmer) and Parliament have planned for the country and its subjects.

DesertSTAR
Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, have plans to ‘assist’ King Charles in his quest to insure that most of the old laws are observed and not modernized too much. The king’s enemies consider him to possess the brain of a Brussel sprout, and believe him to be incapable of being the monarch. His prime minister and his cabinet ministers will not support him or his ideas, instead they plan on installing Prince William as a Regent-King. Charles resists his ministers by refusing to sign the “Ascendency Act” that would transfer some powers away from the monarchy to parliament, along with restricting the freedom of the Press. His continuing refusal to sign raises the issue of a constitutional crisis under English law. All of the events unfolding in this fictional tale, has a familiar ring to it for Americans. The opening night audience seemed to get this ‘ripped from the headlines story’ right from the get-go, laughing at some of the dialogue in places where laughter wasn’t exactly the appropriate response – it felt like I was listening to nervous gallows humor. Jim Abele delivers a solid performance as the flawed, moody, misunderstood Charles. Laura Gardner’s Camilla has the right amount of pathetic, ditzy behavior along with her tossing non-sequiturs to amuse everyone – the characters as well as the audience. Adam Haas Hunter’s Prince William, at first, appears to be a bored player merely waiting for the appropriate moment to embrace the plan hatched by the Prime minister and parliament to make him Regent-King. It’s a nice, nuanced performance, and along with wife Kate, the young Royal pair begin to relish the thought of becoming King and Queen of England. There’s enough palace and parliamentary intrigue taking place in this production to satisfy all fans of such storylines. Prince Harry (Dylan Saunders), is the outlier in this Royal family. He’s independent, lives by his own rules and is harboring the thought of becoming a commoner in order live with his cockney-accented political activist girlfriend Jess (Sarah Hollis). The staging of the production by director Michetti, gets static at times with characters standing in a line. Also, the didactic approach in Act I of setting the characters in motion seemed a little unnecessary. American theatre-going audiences are pretty savvy when it comes to appreciating British history and the execution
of its theatrical stage craft production excellence. The real beauty of this production lies, not only in the ensemble cast’s talent, but also in the expertise of the creative team led by director Michetti. The wide expansive playing area provided by Scenic Designer David Meyer allows Michetti,
to stage scenes on more than one level. The Lighting design by Elizabeth Harper creates the mood moments required by the narrative and the text especially in the Coronation scenes. The costumes, wonderfully designed by Alex Jaeger, are visually stunning. It would take an experienced
eye to determine that the ermine-robed, on stage characters, with their crowns and tiaras and jewels aren’t the real deal. Everything just sparkles with authenticity.
