Texas-Massacre Sutherland Springs shooter identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26 from Comal County Texas (New Braunfels)

Texas church shooting: What we know about alleged gunman Devin Kelley By Desert Star Staff A man identified in some media reports as Devin Patrick Kelley has gunned down 26 people and injured at least 20 more in an attack on Sutherland Springs Baptist Church, before he was found dead in his

car. Here is what we know about the alleged attacker. Speculation has been rife in the media about the identity of the man behind “the largest mass shooting” in Texas’s history, as described by Governor Greg Abbot. While the police have yet

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Pride Weekend encompasses many activities and parties along with one of the largest parades in the Desert. There were street parties, block parties, and entertainment. There were over 35 entertainers on the Pride Stage on Saturday and Sunday. The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus performed along with all the other entertainers. The streets were lined with vendors selling a multitude of articles. They held a 5K run and a Sunday morning breakfast prior to the Pride Parade. The Palm Springs Pride weekend is

full of fun and activities. The Pride Parade took off about 10 am while thousands of men, women, children and even pets sat along the parade route. Parade entrants walked along the side of the street handing out beads, tickets, candy and big colorful balls. Those that took part in the parade were businesses, charities, bands, square dancers, our local policemen, people on stilts, motorcycles and more. Honorees and local mayors rode or walked next to an auto with their names on the side. There

to officially identify the perpetrator, some US media have already come up with the name of Devin Kelley, citing law enforcement sources close to the investigation. Kelley is said to be 26 years old and a resident of New Braunfels, a city near

San Antonio, located some 30 miles from the site of the attack. As it appears from his Facebook account, since taken down, he was a fan of guns, with his cover photo showing an assault rifle. Purported screenshots of his FB page, whose authenticity

cannot be immediately confirmed, appear to feature an Antifascist Action banner, which sparked speculation online about his ties to the left-wing scene. A LinkedIn page Continues on Page 13

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Family YMCA of the Desert held their annual Hoedown at Sundown at the Aqua Caliente Resort Casino Spa on Saturday, November 4th. It was time again to dust off that cowboy hat, polish up the cowboy boots and wear your best cowboy shirt or outfit. This is a fun night where everyone can cut loose their inner cowboy persona at the same time help a worthy charity. The YMCA honored the City of Palm Desert.

Over 350 guests dressed in their best Western duds came to enjoy the night with a Western-style BBQ menu and an evening of entertainment and dancing. Guests arrived at the cocktail hour to find so many events and games going on. They could get their photo taken in <JAIL> or play games. Some of the games were tossing Shyte-a cow chip, throwing a bean bag, trying to ring a wine bottle or rope a fake calf. The games were many and were all along the area where there was

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Loving All Animals held its fundraiser, Spaghetti and No Balls at the Palm Springs Air Museum on November 2nd. Nearly 400 people came to support this great charity that is so important for the animals of the desert. Lindi Biggi founded Loving All Animals and is an avid animal lover. Lindi and her husband Gino had many animals and birds in their Palm Desert home. They held many parties and fundraisers there to raise funds for their programs and also for other charities. Guests had the chance to bid on 28 silent auction items, some that had plenty of doggie treats. A few guests brought their pets along to the dinner and of course, the dogs loved being petted by everyone. Pet lovers filled the room and you could feel the love these people have for their pets. Loving All Animals also brought a few dogs

from their shelter so people could see and hold them. A few were just puppies and also a couple kittens. They are always asking for volunteers and people to foster animals until they can find a forever home. Colonel John W. Nocita USA Retire was honored. They gave him a plaque that said he was honored for his service, support, dedication as a board member and supporter throughout the years. Rick Ross, a one-man band, entertained everyone during dinner and provided dance music later in the evening. Executive Director Michael Russell and Kelley Moody from CBS Local 2 spoke to the guests and introduced an emotional video about their programs and services for the animals. They spoke about the FOOD NOW program that serves food to the needy and their pets while also donating food to Loving All Animals

The event also had 11 live auction items and they used the paddle system to raise more money for the Donor Programs. This is the 30th YMCA Hoedown at Sundown Western-themed annual party that support the many programs of the Family YMCA of the Desert. The title sponsor was The Commander Allen Fund with many title-inkind sponsors. Sponsors were

It takes a lot of sponsors to keep a fundraising party going for 30 years. Each sponsor shows his or her dedication and support to the YMCA. The YMCA has so many programs in aquatics, games, yoga and even dance lessons. They hold day camps and summer camps. There are 41 facilities that serve over 3,500

kids daily from Palm Springs to Mecca. The YMCA works to build confidence, social skills, fitness and above all promote leadership in our youth. They want our kids to be healthy in mind, body, and spirit so they can become successful adults. There is also a pre-school program for the little children. They hold other fundraisers throughout the year like a golf tournament, a Y Be Fit 1k and 5k marathons and more.

What Sacramento Did For (Or is it to?) HOAs in 2017 By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL The California Legislature was quite active this year in creating laws affecting HOAs, as six bills take effect in 2018. This column will address three and next week’s column will address the final three. Senate Bill (SB) 2, known as the “Building Homes and Jobs Act”, was signed by the Governor on September 29 as an urgency statute, which means it took effect on the day it was signed. Its stated goal is to increase housing supply and reduce homelessness, and it creates a fund called

the “Building Homes and Jobs Trust Fund. The new statutes are Government Code Section 27388.1 and Health and Safety Code Sections 50470 and 50470.5. The Fund will receive the proceeds from a new tax of $75 per document on documents recorded with County Recorders, except for documents recorded as part of a transfer of property ownership. Despite being called an urgency statute, it practically does not begin until January 1, 2018, when the County Recorders start collecting the $75 fee on recorded documents. In the future, various documents commonly recorded by HOAs will be subject to the $75 fee, such as amendments to CC&Rs, common area alteration agreements, and liens and lien releases. Delinquent members will now face an additional $150 cost, as the cost to the HOA of recording

an assessment lien and later removing the lien will be passed along to the member as part of the delinquency. A bill which brings some help to HOAs is Assembly Bill (“AB”) 534. Civil Code 4615 previously barred contractors from recording a mechanics lien (yes these in the future will also be subject to SB2’s $75 fee) against an entire condominium project unless the contractor was hired by the HOA to work on common area. Contractors working on a condominium unit could only record a lien on the unit if the homeowner does not pay for the work. Civil Code 4615 will broaden to apply to the other three varieties of common interest developments - planned development, stock cooperative and community apartment projects. A new statute, Civil Code 4620, will require HOAs to notify all owners of mechanics liens filed on common area. Also, Civil

Code 6658 adds the same limitations on mechanics liens to the Commercial and Industrial Common Interest Developments Act (applying to purely nonresidential associations). AB1412 also makes some helpful technical changes to Civil Code Sections 4041 and 5800. Civil Code 4041, created by last year’s SB918, is improved by allowing associations to use the last mailing address indicated by an owner, if the owner fails to respond to the annual solicitation for mailing address updates required by Civil Code 4041(c). Civil Code 5800, which provides immunity for volunteer directors in HOAs with the prescribed minimum directors and officers insurance coverage limits, previously only applied to exclusively residential associations. This left volunteer directors unprotected in the increasingly common “mixed use” associations (with

residential and business units). Starting in 2018, that protection expands to also protect volunteer directors in mixed use associations. However, the immunity is expressly limited to residential tenants and owners, and commercial owners serving as directors will not be protected by Civil Code 5800.

By Janice Gough This question is the great white whale of finance theory. We know that asset prices are given to spectacular rises and falls over short periods of time. Answering this question is hugely important, not just for people’s pensions and retirement, but for the whole economy, since crashes in asset prices can leave growth in the doldrums for years. To determine when to buy, when to hold or when to fold has long been a problem for most. Warren Buffet’s statement brings a significant logic when investing in any commodity, “ I will not tell you how to become rich. Close the Door. Be fearful when others are Greedy, Be Greedy when others are fearful”. Since Seventy percent of decision making is emotional and Thirty percent based on Conventional wisdom, many people get caught up in the “hype” of emotions and ignore what the market is forecasting. For example, in regard to housing markets, people decide how much a house is worth by making a guess about how much people will want to live in the area in the future. If buyers expect local values to increase, it makes sense to pay more for your house, since the influx of other buyers will then drive up prices. If people start believing, even for a short time, that recent trends are the new normal, they will start paying higher prices, which locks the trend in place and lends credence to their belief. Eventually things spiral out of control before they come to their senses. It does not take

much human error to create erroneous expectations about any investment, which can lead to a bubble in the entire market. Some economists have shown that even if just a fraction of investors think this way, it can cause repeated bubbles. But despite decades of research, finance academics have been unable to agree on a cause for this phenomenon. Do investors suddenly become optimistic about asset fundamentals, only to realize a couple of years later that it was all a mirage? Do they buy at prices they know are inflated, hoping to find a greater fool to sell to before the crash? Or do they simply follow the lead of others? How do you know whether demand will increase? One obvious way is to look at recent trends. If prices have been going up, it’s a signal that the area is hot. About 50 percent of homebuyers say that they use recent price trends to determine how much a home is worth. Investors rely on past prices to make guesses about demand, but fail to realize that other buyers are doing the exact same thing. When everyone is making guesses based on other people’s guesses about price trends, the whole thing can become a house of cards. Economists show how if homebuyers think this way, the result, predictably, is repeated causing bubbles and crashes. So, a small but increasing number of papers are asking how markets would behave if investors improperly extrapolate recent trends into the future. Investors simply make mistakes when projecting future asset returns. If stocks have had an outstanding run for the past five years, or if earnings

growth seems to have shifted to a faster trend, people might decide that this is the new normal, and pay prices that later turn out to be ludicrous. When investing, there are so many factors to know and understand, not only about your investment, but also about all the other worldly economics that can impact it towards a positive outcome.

Beware of bitcoin bubble as it smashes $7,600

By Desert Star Staff Bitcoin’s sevenfold rally is one of the telltale signs of a bubble, according to investment strategists. It started the year at $973 and rocketed to $7,600 on Sunday, up over 750 percent in 10 months. Financial advisors warn bitcoin is another bubble similar to the tech boom of the late 1990s, the housing crash of 20062007 and the commodities bust of 2008-2009. “A month before the 1987 crash, my cab driver said he started day trading,” Scott Kelly, CEO of Black Dog Venture Partners in Phoenix, Arizona told Forbes. “A month before the real estate crash in 2007 in Arizona, my cab driver said he was getting into flipping real estate. Last week, my Uber driver said he just started trading Bitcoin.” Since making its debut in

2008, bitcoin has gone from no value to a fraction of a penny by March 2010. Now, one coin is worth over $7,500, and its market capitalization is greater than McDonald’s. For an early investor, $1 in bitcoin seven years ago is worth millions today. Since going mainstream, the crowd is piling in. New companies are popping up everywhere selling you on buying bitcoin for your retirement, writes Forbes, as newsletters tout their bitcoin trading strategy could make $1.64 million in 72 hours. Stories of overnight cryptocurrency millionaires abound. While opinions have been split on the world’s most popular cryptocurrency, business leaders like Warren Buffet, Jamie Dimon and Robert Shiller have warned bitcoin is a bubble.

“But it is anybody’s guess what inning. It looks to me like we’re well ahead of the 7th-inning stretch,” said Jason R. Escamilla, CEO of ImpactAdvisor, an investment advisory firm in San Francisco, as quoted by Fobes. “The

price level and energy usage are unsustainable. There is far better technology emerging to meet the same needs.” Ethereum, bitcoin cash and ripple could be those technologies. Bitcoin accounts for about 61 percent of the

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – When a student in emotional distress in a New York City public school is black, police are much more likely to be involved, according to a new report. The group Advocates for Children of New York says police are intervening in incidents that should be handled by clinically-trained mental health professionals. The report focuses on incidents in which students were sent to a psychiatric hospital for observation - and it found that, in one year, 95 percent of more than 2,700 interventions by police involved children of color. And according to Dawn Yuster, director of the group’s School Justice Project, police were disproportionately involved when the students were black.

“About half of the students that NYPD intervened in were black, even though black students made up only 26.5 percent of students enrolled,” she says. The report also found that between July 2016 and June 2017, 100 percent of students ages five to 12 who were handcuffed by police during these interventions were children of color. The impact of these encounters on the students involved can be severe. Yuster says police interventions can cause them to fear going to school, bring about new, problematic behaviors and even cause post-traumatic stress. “And it’s not limited to the students that are directly harmed, but also their classmates who observe

the student can also be traumatized,” she notes. “And not surprisingly, the school climate can suffer as well.” She says the report makes a number of recommendations, including limiting the role of law enforcement when students are in emotional crisis and implementing the findings of the Mayor’s Leadership Team on School Climate and Discipline. “That would create a network of mental health services to supplement existing hospital and socialservice supports for students and their families, and school staff,” she explains. Yuster adds that similar racial disparities exist in other school districts in New York State and nationwide where police are used as school safety officers.

Sage-Grouse Conservation Plans Threatened in Western States

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management holds a public hearing tonight in the Northern California town of Alturas, about potential changes that could allow more drilling and mining on land currently protected as habitat for sage grouse. The bird is considered a sentinel species whose fate foretells that of 350 other species - including elk, pronghorn and golden eagle. The Trump administration now wants to revisit conservation plans signed two years ago under President Barack Obama. But Ken Rait, project director at The Pew Charitable Trusts, says the plans were a big compromise, years

The sage-grouse plans are an effort to stave off an endangered species listing for the bird, which has already lost half its habitat and 95 percent of its historic population. The bird’s habitat, in the “sagebrush sea” of the Great Basin, is also considered critical for ranchers to graze their animals. Lights on Afterschool Day: Keeping Kids Safe & Engaged More than 11 million kids nationwide are alone or unsupervised after class ends, according to the Afterschool Alliance.

By Desert Star Staff VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Today communities in Washington and across the nation celebrate Lights on Afterschool Day. Now in its 17th year, the day highlights programs that keep kids’ safe and engaged beyond school hours. According to the Afterschool Alliance, more than 11 million children nationwide are alone and unsupervised after school. In Vancouver, many before- and after-school programs take place on elementary school campuses. Shannel Clouse is the services coordinator for school programs with the Vancouver Educational School District. She said these programs partner with the schools to help expand learning opportunities. “We’ll do a lot of activities - for example, doing cooking projects or building something, and then talking to the kids about why it’s important,

or about what they learned in that process,” Clouse said. “You know, just doing things to get them thinking about the things that they are doing in our program.” She said Vancouver programs will celebrate Lights on Afterschool Day with arts and crafts activities, and by speaking with local elected officials about the importance of expanded learning. After school opportunities are especially important for working families. Jackie Brock, also with the Vancouver ESD, said providing services on school campuses where kids already are helps parents immensely. “Families aren’t having to worry about how to support transportation needs. All of the services that their children are accessing are in one location,” Brock said. “So, it definitely reduces a lot of barriers that working families may experience.” Far from just providing

Instead of spending hours in front of a screen, Clouse said they get a chance to interact with other kids. “We’re able to help facilitate some of those social-

emotional needs, like taking turns and sharing, and just kind of managing their own emotions and recognizing others’ emotions,” she said; “helping with empathy that can carry with them throughout their lives.” Funding for after school

and summer programs is under threat in the 2018 budget from the Trump administration, which has proposed sharp cuts in grant money for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program.

By Desert Star Staff The holiday gift-giving season can be a particularly trying time for those shopping for teens. But don’t stress. Cool gift ideas abound, no matter what your teens’ tastes and interests are. Here are a few to consider. For Athletes: Know a young athlete? Improve his or her training sessions with a set of high-quality waterproof headphones, which will make all those laps around the track a bit more pleasant, rain or shine. If you have a bigger budget to work with, a fitness tracker is a useful tool for those looking to more closely track their progress. The 70 pages spiral journal comes with patterns, chipboard frames and sparkling glitter tape. For those recipients who have an interest in creating hand-crafted bath products, consider gifting an STMT DIY Bath Bombs kit, containing everything one might need to make colorful and fragrant bath bombs, along with an instruction booklet with tips and suggestions For Musicians: Don’t fret! A customized guitar strap or pick punch are fun stocking stuffers for guitarists. Or, help drummers keep the beat with a set of personalized drumsticks inscribed with a name or message. You can also simply

foster music appreciation with tickets to a show or concert, or help your teen discover new music with an iTunes or Spotify gift card. For Avid Readers: Bibliophiles can never get their hands on enough books. Help satisfy the craving for new reading material with a book subscription. Whether it’s an e-book subscription that periodically delivers new titles to an e-reader, or a service that delivers printed material by mail, this is a gift that keeps on giving, all year long. For the College Bound: For those teens heading off to college soon, consider a gift card to a big box retailer specializing in all the supplies they will need to set up a dorm room and make it feel like home. short- and long-term effects. “They tend to drive people to riskier behaviors and longterm outcomes of poorer both physical and mental health, in all kinds of areas - long-term stress, stress that causes them to have things like heart disease,” he explains. Sherman says the suicide rate also is higher for people who have had at least one of these ACEs, and increases with each traumatic event. According to the report, more than one in five Idaho kids has

had two or more major, adverse experiences. But it also points to ways the state can improve. It says Idaho ranks well above the national average for families that live in supportive communities. Families also are more likely to eat meals together, as well limit screen time for children and encourage them to do homework and participate in activities. Sherman agrees these are key parts of improving children’s lives. “We have some of the routines and habits that help

families to grow strong,” he notes. “So, if we think about how we can just be that much more supportive of those families who are experiencing difficulties, we can do something that works for all of us.” The Children’s Trust Fund encourages familystrengthening programs like parenting classes and support groups. Sherman says there also are in-home services available to help parents out.

Drowsy Driving Is Dangerous Driving

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – This year, Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 5. Every year, the time change disrupts sleep patterns and may result in sleep-deprived drivers struggling with concentration behind the wheel. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) joins the National Sleep Foundation to promote Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, November 5-12, and increase awareness of the dangers associated with the

deadly driving behavior. California has experienced an increase in collisions involving sleepy or fatigued drivers over the last three years. In 2014, there were 4,693 collisions involving sleepy or fatigued drivers. The number increased to 5,810 in 2015, and to 6,930 in 2016. Over the same time span, those collisions resulted in the deaths of 44 people in 2014, 43 people in 2015, and 47 in 2016. “Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as

driving under the influence. Drowsiness impairs judgment, performance, and reaction time just like alcohol and drugs,” CHP Acting Commissioner Warren Stanley said. “Getting enough rest everyday will be your best defense in reducing your chances of being involved in a collision.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports studies have shown that going too long without sleep can impair your ability to drive the same way as drinking too

much alcohol. Being awake for at least 18 hours is the same as someone having a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.05 percent. Being awake for at least 24 hours is equal to having a BAC of 0.10 percent. This is higher than the legal limit of 0.08 percent BAC. If you notice signs of fatigue, such as heavy eyelids or bobbing your head, exit the freeway, pull off the road, find a safe place to park, and take a 20-minute nap. Drinking a caffeinated

beverage may help you stay alert, but DO NOT rely on it for long periods of time. If you are driving with someone else in the car, take turns driving to allow the driver to rest. These simple precautions will help lower your risk of being involved in a traffic collision, an injury, or death. The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security. Source: California Highway Patrol

Distracted Drivers campaign in partnership with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The yearlong campaign, funded by a grant, will combine education and enforcement

to combat distracted driving. The focus of the education component is to help people understand anything that diverts a driver’s eyes or attention from the roadway, even for a second or two, can result in tragedy. “For your safety and for the well-being of those around you, keep your eyes on the road and not on your phone,” CHP Acting Commissioner Warren Stanley said. “Nothing on that phone is worth endangering a life.” The CHP reminds motorists that it is illegal to use a cell phone while driving unless it is hands-free. The more technology a car has, the more distractions it may present to the driver. Multitasking increases the risk a driver will injure or kill

themselves, their passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists, or people in other vehicles. With this grant, the CHP will complete a minimum of 100 distracted driving enforcement operations and at least 600 traffic safety presentations statewide by the end of September 2018. “Our goal with this grant is to further educate the public about the hazards associated with distracted driving and ultimately stop the potentially deadly behavior,” Acting Commissioner Stanley added. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from OTS through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Source: California Highway Patrol

Website Helps New Mothers ‘Take 12’ from Work

Research shows that taking time off work is crucial for a mother’s health after giving birth. (StockSnap) By Desert Star Staff PIERRE, S.D. – The internet is helping new moms take more time off from work after giving birth or adopting a child. The crowdsourcing network at mytake12.com helps support new mothers financially while they take up to 12 weeks of unpaid time off work to recover and spend time with their babies.

Founder of the website Margi Scott says the goal is to address the country’s lack of paid parental leave. She notes that the United States in the only industrialized nation not to offer it, and says the idea came to her last year after having twins. “What I wanted and needed more than anything was to be at home with my

babies without feeling that financial stress of unpaid leave,” she says. “And so, I just thought, wouldn’t it be cool if we could - instead of a gift registry for stuff that we don’t need - have a place where we could register for what we really do need, which is time to recover and bond?” The website was retooled about three weeks ago and

Scott says it has grown exponentially since then. It now includes an online resource center for expectant and new moms. About 600 currently have registries on the site. Scott says the research is clear that not only is leave beneficial for children, it’s often crucial for a new mother’s health. Yet on average, working women are back to work ten days after giving birth. “At ten days postpartum, you’re still at high risk for birth-related complications,” she explains. “So, women are actually putting their health and their own self-care at risk, just to be able to continue to provide for their families.” Scott hopes one day the website won’t be necessary and that parents have access to the paid leave they need. But she acknowledges it could take a while to get it right. “Instead of just saying, ‘Oh well, now people have some paid leave,’ we really need to get down to the bottom of what sufficient paid leave looks like for healthier American families,” she adds.

Fireplace Safety Tips for this Holiday Season and Beyond By Desert Star Staff Gathering around the hearth this holiday season? While you may be taking time off from work and school to celebrate, don’t take a vacation from practicing basic safety guidelines. Stay safe with the following tips. Safety Devices: Before using your fireplace or lighting candles, check all of your home’s life-saving safety devices, including carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms for functionality, and to ensure batteries are still working. You should do this periodically, but especially around a time of year with additional fire risks. Fireplaces: A cozy, charming fire is the perfect place to gather during the holidays. Heatilator, a leader in fireplace safety and the number one fireplace brand used by homebuilders, offers these tips: • Many holiday items and materials are combustible, so place all gifts, trees, and holiday décor a safe distance from the fireplace • Conduct annual maintenance on your fireplace, chimney and associated elements. • Outfit your gas fireplace with a safety screens to prevent burns. • Always monitor children and pets near a lit fireplace or one that was recently turned off. While safety screens are meant to protect against contact with hot glass, remember that the metal can also heat up, and you’re heating equipment www.desertstarweekly.com

Candles: Candles add warmth and splendor to holiday decor, but they come with certain risks. Place these burning beauties in safe locations away from fabrics, trees and other flammable objects. Only burn candles in occupied rooms. If you have children or pets, candle warmers make for a safer alternative that can offer you peace of mind. How to more fully secure finances and resources held in common and also stabilize relationships? These questions you ponder the next several months. Some answers. Maintain necessary boundaries and confidentiality yet be very truthful with those you trust. Pay bills, organize and safeguard important papers, tend to long forgotten needs (and deeds), and allow no alienation to occur. Share and safeguard more.

TAURUS Important tasks, set aside for months, now need tending and completing. These include cleaning, clearing, home repair, order and organization, ordering supplies, licensing, day to day living needs, commitments and something concerning marriage. Deep emotions emerge from the tests. They will appear in all relationships. Partnership needs deep need listening. Sit down together. Talk heart to heart.

GEMINI The nine tests reveal themselves in daily life events, such as scheduling, tending to self, health, animals and serving others. You will be asked to help and assist others, fulfill more tasks, set high standards, volunteer, floss more carefully, act as if you are beloved, be

You remember to step back and observe, to nurture yourself, and to dream more about what you really and truly desire.

In turn, you are to be generous, too. Give to (tithe) those in need. Do this scientifically. A bit each month. Financial differences occur within relationships. Stand your ground by sharing. SCORPIO The tests for Scorpio center on self-identity. You will observe your many selves through the lens of who you are, who you used to be, who you think you are, and who you really are, now and in the future. This is complex but not confusing. It’s clarifying, especially since the tests are made especially for you. Watch your communication. Always practice Ahimsa (doing no harm).

5 Ways to Get Your Home Ready for the Holidays

By Desert Star Staff Whether you’re hosting or just trying to get into the holiday spirit, preparing your home doesn’t have to be daunting or expensive. Check out these five tips for getting your home in tip-top holiday shape on any budget from the experts at Dollar General: Deck the Dining Table:

DesertSTAR

Get your dining table holidayready by purchasing staple décor pieces that can be rotated throughout the year. Fill glass vases with seasonal items such as ornaments, holly, faux snow or pinecones. Add extra light and warmth to the table with a flameless LED pillar candle. Place tea lights in small vases filled with cranberries, holly and water

for an inexpensive and festive way to decorate the table. Decorate the Tree: If you’re looking for a fun way to get kids involved in holiday decorating, purchase plain ornaments for them to design with paint or pens. Clear ornaments can be filled with glitter or tinsel to create a unique look for your tree. Decorated November 8, 2017

ornaments also make great and thoughtful gifts. Embellish your tree by adding red or burlap ribbon from the top of each side and adding a topper. Then, consider coordinating the color scheme of your tree with gifts, using those that were wrapped early as decor throughout your house. Deck the Front Door: Make a DIY wreath by gluing bows or pinning ornaments to a foam wreath. Designing your own door decor doesn’t have to be expensive, and it will allow you to add your own personal touch to your home’s entryway. Complete the look with festive outdoor lighting. Affordable options are available at such variety stores as Dollar General. Design a Festive Mantle: Decorate your fireplace mantle for the holidays without spending much time or money. Wrap a garland in mini string lights and hang leftover ornaments to continue the theme from your tree. Create handmade bows to place at each end of the mantle using your choice of ribbon. If you don’t have a mantle, you can

create a fireplace-like space with a cluster of string lights or LED candles in a nook of your home. Then, remember to hang the stockings! Create a Cleaning Game Plan: The holidays can be fun, festive and messy. Create a day-by-day cleaning game plan, focusing on one area of your house at a time. This will save you stress and allow you more time to get organized. Be sure you’re stocked up on all your holiday prep cleaning supplies, including sponges, microfiber cloths and wet mop refills. For holiday savings, you can sign up for Dollar General digital coupons, which offers a $1 off coupon when you sign up. Create an account by visiting dollargeneral. com/coupons or through the DG mobile app. Remember, getting into the holiday spirit doesn’t have to break the bank. Save time and money decorating your home, so you can spend more stress-free moments with friends and family. StatePoint

The Verdi Chorus was founded in 1983 at the Verdi Restaurant in Santa Monica. When the restaurant closed

in 1991 the Verdi Chorus continued on under the direction of founding artistic director Anne Marie Ketchum.

Their repertoire contains over 300 choruses from 87 operas. The group is dedicated to presenting opera choruses in concert to provide career opportunities for young professional singers. They also give talented amateurs the chance to sing side by side with professional singers in rehearsals which is like a vocal master class. On November 18 and 19 they will present “Love’s Passions and Potions” in Santa Monica at the First United Methodist Church, featuring operatic favorites from Verdi, Massenet, Donizetti and more. They will also perform selections from Romberg’s “The Student Prince” and “The New Moon” and Victor Herbert’s “Naughty Marietta.” The three guest soloists are soprano Jamie Chamberlin, acclaimed by Opera News, Nathan Granner, one of the original “The American Tenors” on Sony Classical and baritone Ben Lowe who will be making his New York debut this season performing in the opera “Crossing.” One of the young singers in the Verdi Chorus is soprano Sarah Salazar, a Canoga Park resident. DVD NEWS: On November 14 Lionsgate’s “Wind River” will be available on Blu-ray and DVD. This chilling thriller involves the murder of a young girl on a remote Native American reservation. To track down the killer the FBI sends in a rookie agent (Elizabeth Olsen) from Las Vegas. She arrives in spring-like attire just as the snow begins to fall. It is obvious that she doesn’t know her way around in this wilderness area. Fortunately, she is able to team up with a game tracker there (Jeremy Renner) with deep community ties even though he is not Native American himself. The film was written and directed by Academy Award nominee Tayler Sheridan (Best original screenplay, “Hell and High Water,” 2017). It is involving, suspenseful and gives the viewer an insight into life on a desolate reservation where jobs and opportunities are few and far between. The film is rated R for strong violence, a rape, disturbing images, and languages. Added features include Behind-the-scenes Video Gallery and Deleted Scenes.

The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity Honors Oprah Winfrey By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, -- The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity presented its inaugural Legacy Award to Oprah Winfrey at the Foundation’s annual dinner Wednesday night, November 1st, at the Morgan Library in New York City. The award recognized Ms. Winfrey’s efforts to carry on the work, message and legacy of Elie Wiesel through her commitment to humanitarian service. Founded by Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize recipient who died in 2016, and his wife Marion, the Foundation seeks to combat intolerance through international dialogue and youth-focused programs. Mrs. Marion Wiesel said, “We are honoring Oprah Winfrey with the Elie Wiesel Legacy Award not only because of her dear friendship with my husband, but for her unwavering commitment to humanity and to giving voice to the voiceless. Her dedication to education, especially through the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, mirrors Elie’s spirit of always teaching, valuing students, and believing in the power of knowledge.” Upon receiving the award,

Oprah Winfrey said about Elie Wiesel, “You knew you were in the presence of someone who had endured the unimaginable worst of times and could still give and teach the best that love has to offer. Every day he taught, lectured and lived compassion, peace, empathy for other souls and truth.” She added, “Elie Wiesel was a hero to me, a mentor, and a friend; and that’s not a word I use lightly, ‘friend.’ He was truly a friend. So, to have my name and my legacy linked to his in this way carries weight.” Also at the event, Elisha Wiesel, the son of Elie and Marion Wiesel, announced that the Foundation will launch new conferences for young leaders in Africa and will be forming new partnerships to establish professorships bearing Elie Wiesel’s name to spread his message at universities around the country. He also challenged the audience, asking them: “Will you stand with my father -- as I believe our honoree Oprah so very much does -- will you stand with him and defend his vision of hope? Will you lend your voice to DACA children in danger of deportation, to

Overtired, BlearyEyed Kids? Blame Too Much Screen Time By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M – If your kids are falling asleep watching TV or with cell a phone tucked under the covers they’re likely going to bed later and getting much less sleep than kids without access to electronic devices. Monique LeBourgeois, the associate professor of the Dept. of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado is the lead author on a new study that says children are uniquely vulnerable to sleep disruption from electronic screens. She says because the eyes of young children are not fully developed, the light has a bigger effect on their internal body clock. “And many parents believe that media - like watching a video or playing a game calms their children before bedtime but in fact, it may be the exact opposite,” she explains. “And we may be creating the perfect storm to disruption of both the circadian clock and sleep.” www.desertstarweekly.com

Studies have found that screen time is associated with delayed bedtimes, fewer hours of sleep and poorer sleep quality. A recent report from the nonprofit organization, Commonsense Media, showed mobile media device use has tripled among young children aged 5 to 16 in the past six years. LeBourgeois says light is our brain’s primary timekeeper and when it comes to children and adolescents, self-illuminated devices like smartphones, tablets and televisions bathe kids eyes in blue light which can keep sleep at bay. “So, this immature eye allows more light to actually hit the retina that signals the internal biological clock,” she adds. LeBourgeois encourages parents to turn off their kids’ devices with screens before bed and charge them somewhere outside bedrooms. She also says parents should set an example by keeping TVs, computers, tablets and cellphones out of their own bedrooms.

Oprah Winfrey, Marion Wiesel and Julia Roberts at the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity Gala in Honor of Oprah Winfrey Muslim refugees fleeing to safety, to victims of shootings pleading for gun control laws, to a planet reeling from the effects of irresponsible and unnecessary pollution? And will you keep my father’s gentle voice in mind as you argue your point with respect, not scorn?” Julia Roberts served as the emcee for the evening, which also included a live musical performance by Kelly Clarkson. Two alumnae of the Leadership Academy for Girls, Mpumi

Nobiva and Sade Stevens, introduced Ms. Winfrey and presented her with the award. Other speakers included Marion Wiesel, Elisha Wiesel, David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications, Ronald Lauder, the philanthropist and President of the World Jewish Congress, and author Dov Seidman. Event chairpersons were David and Pam Zaslav, Ralph and Ricky Lauren, Roger

and Sloan Barnett, and Ira and Ingeborg Rennert. The event also took place to honor two very special women in the Desert that have played a major role in the fight against cancer and help those who are afflicted with the disease. Annette Bloch, a dedicated philanthropist in the desert, was honored with the 2017 LifeTime Passion Award. Bloch and her husband began a lifetime of helping those with cancer after her husband was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. He was given months to live but with treatments, some experimental at the time was cured and lived another 25 years. It was their wish to give back and support all Cancer-related charities and make many of their own Cancer Care Centers. Bloch has given 30 million dollars in this passion of caring for cancer victims. She also has given millions in the Desert to local charities including HIV/AIDS with a center for cancer victims at Desert AIDS Project. She has commissioned 25 Cancer Survivors Parks across the country including one in Rancho Mirage. Her

dedication has been to help people emotionally as well as physically with treatments and services at NO COST. That’s where CancerPartners, formerly Gilda’s Club, became another charity she supported where people get help and hope at no charge. Janet K. Ihde, MD was honored with the 2017 Partner in Passion Award. Dr. Ihde is a highly respected Surgical Oncologist and caring physician in the Valley. She had started many Firsts in the Desert with new programs in the fight against cancer. She serves as Medical Director of Women’s Health at Desert Regional Medical Center. She finds time to chair and serve on many committees. She said she now understands what women go thru when they get the dreaded diagnosis of breast cancer. She is lovingly nicknamed the Energizer Bunny with all she accomplishes every day. Cancer Partners wanted to thank all those that support their mission of serving people and families affected by cancers of all kinds. They provide a place where patients and families can go for support. They provide Educational Workshops, Lifestyle Programs, Social Activities and Professional Support all free of charge. Its a place where cancer patients can feel they are not alone and get the hope they need to survive this dreaded disease. Their mantra is Cancer is just a Word and not a Sentence. By changing the name to CancerPartners they hope to extend their reach to everyone and not just women as the name Gilda’s Club implied. Cancer involves all the family and not just the patient and they also need the support

There are so many types of cancer that those affected need a myriad of support to know they can fight it with others that are affected and are not alone. Emcee Bobbie Eakes spoke about how it affected her family. Bobby sang a song for the guests that she felt said a lot about the words, cancer and

the evening. After a delicious dinner, the guests were treated to entertainment by a band and singer straight from Las Vegas. The dance floor filled up quickly to the music they provided. This is just the first Passions Ball and everyone said they were excitingly awaiting another Ball next year. The Pinnacle Partner was Wasserman Foundation along with many others to make this Ball a premier event.

Speakers included Maria Elena Geyer, President, and CEO of CancerPartners and Paul D. Golden, Board chair. A video showed a children’s playroom in the new center. The center works to include everyone in the family for support. A good attitude is essential in fighting cancer. Presenters of the awards were Michelle Finney, Barbara Keller, and Terri Ketover.

California Loses a Journalistic Innovator By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO -- California is losing a venerable independent news agency that leaves as its legacy a stronger, more diverse news landscape. New America Media announced it will be closing its doors on November 30. The nonprofit started in 1970 in San Francisco as Pacific News Service. The name www.desertstarweekly.com

may not be familiar, but its articles became a staple for hundreds of newspapers around the country. Executive Director Sandy Close said its writers broke many major stories about the war in Vietnam. “It was among the first to provide eyewitness accounts on the impact of the air war and Agent Orange, fragging - when GIs turned

on their own leaders - and we had the last American reporter in Cambodia after the fall,” Close said. In the 1980s, the organization became New America Media and launched a number of publications designed to amplify the voices of low-income youth - some from behind bars to combat the myth of the super-predator. Many of those November 8, 2017

are still publishing today. Later, editors formed partnerships with many ethnic media publications to bring their perspectives to the mainstream. Close said the whole enterprise has been funded by donors and foundations, but they got overextended in recent years because they tended to keep projects going even after the funding ran out.

“Our ambitions exceeded our budget constraints,” she said. “We’ve completed a lot of projects and we’re now exploring opportunities to continue some key projects under other auspices.” Some of the projects that the organization hopes to continue concern issues such as immigrant rights, the 2020 census and the future of watersheds in California.

MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

Wide Range of Styles Showcased on New Releases A mix of deluxe and expanded reissues as well as several exciting new albums are just waiting to be explored and discovered by new and longtime discerning music listeners.

Artist: John Wetton Title: Akustrika / Akustrika II (Primary Purpose / Red Cherry Red Records) You might like if you enjoy: ASIA, U.K., King Crimson Tell me more: Fans of John Wetton continue to mourn the legendary rocker who died on Jan. 31, 2017 following a long battle fighting cancer. Now the lead singer/bassist of ASIA, U.K. and King Crimson (1972-1974) is featured on a fantastic 2CD set celebrating his legacy. “Akustrika: Live in Amerika (featuring tracks recorded in October 1995) and “Akustrika II: Return to Amerika” (featuring a concert taped on Nov. 11, 2005) really highlight Wetton’s gifts as one of rock’s most emotive voices. The inspired “Voice of America,” “Hold Me Now” (with Wetton’s voice soaring) and a remarkable version of the ASIA classic “Only Time Will Tell” and a stirring “Battle Lines” are among this writer’s favorites on the first disc, while the intimate “Walking on Air,” driving “Sole Survivor” and a dramatic retelling of ASIA’s hit “Heat of the Moment” are among the many standouts on the second disc. Accompanied by only his acoustic guitar or piano, the tracks on the release were selected for this collection by Wetton before his passing; “Akustrika / Akustrika II” is a powerful tribute to Wetton’s enduring legacy. Artist: Eric Johnson Title: Live From Austin TX (New West Records) You might like if you enjoy: Eric Johnson, Joe Bonamassa, Jimi Hendrix Tell me more: Widely (and rightly) ranked as one of the best and most creative rock guitarists of all time, Eric Johnson has released a number of memorable albums since his critically-acclaimed 1990 album “Ah Via Musicom.” But the new “Live From Austin TX” Johnson title serves as a monumental reminder how great and groundbreaking Johnson has been all along. Recorded and filmed in December 1988 and originally aired in 1989, the newly-issued CD/DVD combo release is truly thrilling from start to finish. Just listen to Johnson race through the countrified instrumental “Steve’s Boogie” or artfully weave dynamic guitar textures amidst the arching and ambitious “Trail Of Tears.” Johnson performs plenty of his original gems (including “Cliffs of Dover,” which won Johnson a 1991 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, and the jazz instrumental “East Wes”), as well as versions of two Jimi Hendrix classics (“Love Or Confusion,” “Are You Experienced?”). Ohio-spawned outfit performed as part of an episode of “Music City Limits.” The Robert Pollard-led troupe performed more than 30 songs over the course of 97 minutes before an intimate and enthusiastic audience. While many of the songs played at the session were never shown as part of the original broadcast of the episode, all are showcased on two audio CDs and an accompanying DVD on the “Live From Austin TX” combo release. The lo-fi music heroes turn in a loose and customarilyfreewheeling performance, including grating art damage cuts (“Let’s Get Down To Business”), jangly melodic rock (“Girls Of Wild Strawberries,” “Gold Star For Robot Boy”), progressive alt rock (“Redmen And Their Wives”) and rapid fire guitar-driven lo-fi cuts (“Exit Flagger”). artists such as the Kingbees also mined new creative pay dirt out of the past with phenomenal results. Add to that distinguished list Flat Duo Jets, a group formed by singerguitarist Dexter Romweber and drummer Chris “Crow” Smith in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1984. The new retrospective “Wild Wild Love” compiles Flat Duo Jets’ exhilarating self-titled debut and outtakes, as well as the “(In Stereo)” EP the duo released on cassette in 1984. It’s simply impossible not to get swept up as the Flat Duo Jets roar through spirited rockers such as “My Life, My Love,” “When My Baby Passes By” and “Tribute to Gene.” The Flat Duo Jets’ joyful version of Fats Domino’s “Strut My Stuff” also doubles as a tribute to the recently-lost New Orleans legend. On the second disc outtakes abound, including the buoyant instrumentals “Minor Swing” and “Penetration 1,” the Jerry Lee Lewis-styled “You Made Me Cry - 01” and bluesy “Look Down 2.” Information: Daniel13.com. Artist: The Hangabouts Title: Kits & Cats

and Saxon Wives (Futureman Records) You might like if you enjoy: Fountains of Wayne, The Beatles, The Zombies Tell me more: This writer only recently discovered the tuneful and infectious songs of Michigan pop trio the Hangabouts. The group’s latest album “Kits & Cats and Saxon Wives” is bolstered by top-notch songwriting, great harmony vocals, a nod to the troupe’s ‘60s and ‘70s heroes and a winning spirit that

cars. The proposal would deal a blow to electric transportation’s growing momentum, which is quickly gaining ground in affordability with other fuel types. Gary Graunke, the president of the Oregon Electric Vehicle Association, says the proposal would hurt the industry in the short term but adds that Oregon actually is moving in the other direction. “We had a pleasant surprise

at the last legislative session that - a year when money’s always hard to come by - they found a way to fund the electric-vehicle credit in the state,” he says. Oregon will offer an electriccar rebate of up to $2,500 starting in January. The federal tax credit in the House GOP’s tax plan has not yet been finalized. Opponents of the credit say it unfairly favors electric vehicles. Graunke says the cost

of batteries has gone down sharply in recent years and that electric vehicles also have low maintenance costs, meaning they can be revived easily. He notes that fighting climate change through fuels that are better for the environment will save money as well. “At some point, the people in government that are doing tax policy and spending - you know, the fiscal conservatives

comes across throughout the 13-track disc. There is baroque pop (the Mellotron-adorned “Sinking Feeling” and lovely “Twelve Songs”), psychedelic rock (“Cricket Time,” “Selling Out”), soaring power pop (the intoxicating “Evelyn Wood” and decidedly wistful “Taking You to Leave Me”), an Everly Brothersmeets-Crowded House nugget (“Follow the Sunshine”) and gorgeous acoustic ballads (“Too Hot to Sleep,” “Sensation Overnight”) — all of it adding up to a terrific album. Information: Hangabouts.com.

Artist: Diamond Hands Title: Diamond Hands (Kool Kat Musik) You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, Big Star, Badfinger Tell me more: Los Angelesbased Diamond Hands’ selftitled album (released in 2016 on vinyl and cassette, but only recently on audio CD) offers a batch of terrific songs written and recorded by Jon Flynn and Joel Wall. There are sonic ghosts of some of rock’s greatest melodic voices here (just listen to the Beatlesque “Not the Same” and “Just Another Day”), but there is also a contemporary urgency to the material that confirms this is no mere exercise in nostalgia. The rollicking “Nothing Left to Lose,” Big Star-worthy “See You Again” and defiant alt rocker “Old Man” elevate “Diamond Hands” for listeners who like a not only power pop but other rock styles too. Future Still Bright for Electric Vehicles in Ore. Even If Tax Credit is Axed

PORTLAND, Ore. – The auto industry and supporters of electric vehicles don’t want to see Congress put the brakes on an electric vehicle tax incentive, but the fuel’s future still is looking bright. Industry leaders such as Tesla, Nissan and General Motors are opposing the House Republicans’ plan in their upcoming tax bill to eliminate a $7,500 tax credit for electric

Industry experts predict that, if the current trajectory holds, electric vehicles will be comparable in price to average vehicles within a decade. www.desertstarweekly.com

Weinstein hired ex-Mossad agents to silence abuse allegations By Desert Star Staff An “army of spies” tried to silence actresses and reporters making allegations against Harvey Weinstein, a report claims. Security firm Black Cube, run by former Mossad operatives, is reported to be involved. The New Yorker magazine revealed that the former Miramax producer hired Black Cube as well as Kroll, one of the world’s largest corporate intelligence firms. Their brief was to find out compromising details about the personal lives and sexual histories of the dozens of women and journalists who could expose him. According to the investigation, Black Cube, which describes itself as “a select group of veterans from the Israeli elite intelligence,” repeatedly fished for information on actress Rose McGowan, who publicly accused Weinstein of rape. A female Black Cube operative who went by the alias “Diana Filip” posed as the deputy head for private investment at London wealth management firm Reuben Capital Partner. In this guise, she approached

McGowan several times, apparently seeking to establish a friendship. During their meetings, “Filip” recorded conversations with the actress. Ben Wallace, a New York-based reporter who was covering sex abuse allegations against Weinstein, said that the same woman met with him twice last autumn. She identified herself only as Anna and claimed she also had an allegation against Weinstein. Wallace recounted that the woman spoke with a German accent and had a UK mobile phone number. It turned out that “Diana Filip” and “Anna” were creations of a former Israeli Defense Force officer employed by Black Cube, according to three informed sources. When shown photos of the Black Cube operative, McGowan recalled her vividly. “Oh my God,” she replied. “Reuben Capital. Diana Filip. No f***ing way.” Security agencies hired by Weinstein also dug up information on dozens of people, including personal and sexual histories. Notably, a report compiled on McGowan by a separate

private security firm included the sub-heading “Past lovers.” In other instances, the information-gathering effort was spearheaded by Weinstein’s lawyers. One of them was David Boies, a renowned attorney who represented Al Gore during the presidential election dispute back in 2000; he also argued for marriage equality before the US Supreme Court. In October 2016, Boies’s law firm, Boies

Schiller Flexner, transferred a $600,000 invoice under a contract signed between the two entities earlier that month. One, dated July 11, 2017, and signed by Boies, states that the effort’s “primary objectives” were to “provide intelligence which will help the Client’s efforts to completely stop the publication of a new negative article in a leading NY newspaper.” The agents also had to “obtain additional content

of a book which is currently being written and includes harmful negative information on and about the Client.” The story in question was published in the New York Times on October 5th, which suggested Weinstein has paid off harassment accusers for decades. The book mentioned in the contract was a memoir by McGowan entitled ‘Brave’, scheduled for publication by HarperCollins in January.

DHS to Make Budget Cuts If Tax Measure Fails to Pass

KMIR Vince Marino Desert Hot Springs, CA - The City of Desert Hot Springs is slated to make deep budget cuts if Measures B and C are not approved by city residents. Signs in support of the measure are everywhere in Desert Hot Springs. And while it appears everyone is on board, that is not necessarily the case. “I voted no,” said Desert Hot Springs resident Russell Smith. Some are skeptical about whether the funds will be spent on public safety as they have been advertised. “They’re saying that most of it is supposed to go for that, but there’s no guarantees, that I saw, that say it has to go for this and this and this,” said Russell. City officials insist the funds will go to public safety. “These measures are specifically ear marked and designated for public safety. That means these funds can’t be used for anything else in this community. They don’t go to parks, they don’t go

to streets, they go to public safety,” said Doria Wilms, public information officer for the city of Desert Hot Springs. Both measures were first approved in 2009 and 2010. The taxes generate about five million dollars a year, about a third of the city’s revenue. “We have a very, very busy Police Department and Fire Department. Our officers have taken a twenty-two percent pay decrease. And

they have been functioning at lower staffing level over the last several years,” said Wilms. Voting no on Measures B and C would mean budget cuts. The police department would lay off 11 police officers. The city would close one of its fire stations and programs like animal control, graffiti clean up and trash abatement would be lost. “What we’re asking voters to do is not initiate any new

tax, it’s truly extending what’s currently in place,” said Wilms. Breanna Sewell is a Desert Hot Springs resident and business owner. She worries about the impact to residents of the city if the tax measures do not pass. “The length of time for the police department to react to a crime is already to lengthy. And that length will just increase,” said Sewell.

103-Year-Old Harmonica Player Refuses to Let Dementia Slow Her Down

By Desert Star Staff Playing the harmonica, dancing, bowling: For Brookdale Senior Living resident Dorothy Plummer, these longtime passions bring purpose as well as pleasure to daily life. What may be surprising is that Plummer is not only 103 – she is living with dementia. Plummer embodies Brookdale’s mission of person-centered care, which focuses on sustaining individual interests and daily routines to give meaning to each person’s life. As part of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, Brookdale is offering a free downloadable journal to help others with dementia look for ways to live life to the fullest. “When people hear someone has Alzheimer’s, the label of the disease can unfortunately replace who the person is,” said Juliet Holt Klinger, senior director of dementia care for Brookdale. “Their life becomes shaped by the diagnosis. The things they love to do may be taken away when they don’t need to be. This can cause disengagement, potentially leading to depression, isolation, loss of appetite, weight loss, and even falls.” Brookdale’s personcentered care is based on understanding a dementia diagnosis does not change an individual’s identity. “It’s knowing them, honoring all of their life history and their preferences, and recognizing them as a skilled, talented human being,” Holt Klinger said. “It’s providing consistent assignment of care partners who truly

understand them. In short, we provide an entire culture of caring and programming that puts the person living with the disease at the center of everything we do.” Holt Klinger encourages people with dementia to have open, honest conversations with their loved ones early in the disease process. The downloadable Alzheimer’s care journal has been designed to help with these discussions. “When a person with the dementia makes it clear how they would like to live, what brings them purpose and joy, and what will matter to them as the condition progresses, it is much easier for care partners to help create and sustain the life that is meaningful to them.” Plummer, who raised three sons on a farm, has played the harmonica much of her life and has long loved to dance. She bowled in leagues with an 11-pound ball until her local alley closed when she was 101. Learning about these passions in order to provide person-centered care was a crucial first step when she moved into Brookdale College Square in Overland Park, Kansas. “When a new resident arrives, we work on understanding their life story, what they love to do, what engages them,” said Brookdale’s Pamela Luna, Clare Bridge program coordinator who works with Plummer. “Then we incorporate these interests into our activities calendar so they can continue to pursue them and also connect with others by sharing them.”

Dorothy is a Brookdale memory care resident who loves listening to music with her care partner, Pamela. Plummer happily accepted the suggestion that she play her harmonica for other residents and has joined in the frequent dancing at Brookdale College Square. Her passion for bowling has prompted the community to plan a resident league. “She’s involved and active,” said Gary Herrick, Plummer’s son. “Everything has made her life more enjoyable and that’s the key for our family. We want her to be happy.”

“All of us define ourselves by what we do well,” Holt Klinger said. “It’s crucial that people with dementia continue to have access to that things they want to do, for which they are talented and skilled – in short, that make them still feel like and be themselves.” In addition to focusing on person-centered dementia care in its Clare Bridge Program, Brookdale dedicates significant time and resources to the fight against the disease, with

strong participation in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s. In 2016, the company raised more than $2.4 million and remained the largest fundraiser nationally, with over 6,800 associates, residents and family members taking part in the 706 teams Brookdale fielded for the Walk nationwide. Since 2008, Brookdale has contributed nearly $10 million to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Source: PRNewswire
