Desert Star Weekly visits the “Coachella-Music Fest“ week one! By Desert Star Staff The hottest festival on earth with 90 000 visitors and temperatures close to 100 degrees - and an endless visit of Superstars. Market Volatility May Lead to Buying Opportunity

By Kevin powell The stock market has stumbled out of the gates in 2014. Through Friday, the S&P 500 was down -1.66% for the year. NASDAQ was down ever more with a -4.23% loss and the Dow has given back -2.7%. But don’t let this recent sluggishness dampen your long term perspective. Including these losses, the S&P 500 is still up more than 14% for 1-year, while the NASDAQ is up 21% and the Dow is up 10%. There are so many factors to evaluate when trying to decipher why the stock market does anything. The growing concerns over Russian

aggression in Ukraine have impacted stocks everywhere. The Russian markets are down about 20%. The US economy isn’t showing a lot of signs of resurgence either. Unemployment remains high (although slowly improving) as we continue to struggle with job creation. The Federal Reserve began tapering its bond stimulus program and many feared that would lead to stock losses. Chairman Janet Yellen has recently said the Fed is concerned with the stagnant US economy to the point where they may slow the taper and evaluate how the economy responds. US GDP came in at 2.35% for 2013 and that’s anemic especially when you consider all the stimulus that was provided. Europe is slowly showing signs of life and is definitely building a base to recover from its recession. But the threats from Russia are forcing many investors to pull funds from the EU until a resolution is reached. The harsh winter that much of the US experienced definitely had an impact on our productivity and manufacturing output. As winter fades and spring blooms, this problem will go away.

Remember the sequestration scare? A little more than one year after it was enacted, the results point to anything but. The military actually received their pay and on time. We did not see longer lines at security checkpoints. The stock market soared climbing 22%; GDP

came in ahead of expectations; unemployment fell from 7.7% to 6.7% and most importantly the budget deficit dropped by 38%. These statistics go to prove that we can cut the budget without wrecking the economy. The markets were due for a slowdown and even a modest

pullback. This is actually a healthy trend and there is quite a bit of good news to be found if you dig deep enough. Perseverance will likely be rewarded later in 2014. Kevin Powell has been a financial advisor for the past 28 years and can be reached at kpplanner1@aol.com.

By Kelly G. richardson, esq. CCAL The California Legislature is very active this year (as it is most years) regarding common interest developments (aka “homeowner associations”). Some bills (proposed laws) are still pending from last year, while others were introduced this year. To become law, a bill must pass its house of origin by May 31 and pass the other house by August 31. On January 17, 2014, Governor Brown declared a

State of Emergency regarding the drought. In response, several bills were introduced, which seek to limit the ability of CIDs to restrict low water landscaping or to discipline homeowners who underwater their landscaping. These bills are SB (Senate Bill) 992 and 1144, and AB (Assembly Bill) 2100 and 2104. This means that, if any of these bills becomes law, an association would have to allow brown yards and dead or sick looking plants, until the

Declaration of Emergency is withdrawn. While I understand the importance of water conservation, I hope the bills will be amended to protect neighbors from eyesore properties. Common Interest Developments are the only nonprofit corporations in California not allowed to vote electronically. AB 1360, sponsored by the Community Associations Institute, seeks to permit HOAs to choose to offer its members the option to vote via the Internet. The bill was introduced last year and passed the Assembly, and is awaiting Senate Committee hearing. The bill now contains far more protections on the Internet voting than any other California corporation. It would be a great help in enhancing participation by an increasingly Internetbased society in their association governance. AB 1738 seeks to amend the “Internal Dispute Resolution” process. Civil Code 5905 added by 2004’s AB 1836, requires all HOAs to have internal dispute procedures in place, to provide a quick and no-cost method to resolve disputes without resort to courts and attorneys. AB 1738 would change all that, by specifically authorizing the HOA or the involved homeowner(s) to have attorneys participate. Attorney involvement in IDR is normally not necessary, and having attorneys involved means IDR will involve significant cost. I

think this bill is a bad idea. IDR should be homeowner talking to a homeowner. AB 2561 seeks to protect the right of homeowners not only to have a garden, but to have a garden to raise crops for sale. I have never seen an association issuing a blanket ban on raising vegetables, so I don’t know if this law is needed. Certainly, a blanket protection by the state is just as bad as a blanket ban by HOAs on gardens. AB 2430 is sponsored by the California Association of Realtors®, seeking to crack down on abuses by management companies charging excessive fees to buyers for association disclosures and other documents. Buyers are entitled under Civil 4525 to several important documents, and the bill would require that the seller would pay the cost, not the buyer. There are other bills pending which affect associations, but these caught my eye as likely to interest your readers. To read a bill, check its status, or send comments to the author, visit www.leginfo. legislature.ca.gov. Kelly G. Mexican Surgery Saves The Leg of Cancer Patient

Specialists “Dr. Juan Graham Casasús” in Mexico performed the successful surgery. By Desert Star Staff Two years after having developed osteosarcoma –the most common type of bone cancer among boys- in his right leg, the young man José Trinidad Hernández Hernández recovered his daily life after having a surgery in which an unconventional prosthesis was implanted. In this way, the amputation of his leg was avoided. L o re n z o P a c h e c o Bautista, Director General of the Regional Hospital of High Specialty “Dr. Juan Graham Casasús” in Mexico informed that this surgery was possible thanks to the resources of the Popular Insurance, with which the prosthesis that allows the patient to walk was bought. María de Jesús Hernández

Hernández, mother of the young man, said that at 14 his son began to have pain and eventually this pain grew until it was impossible for him to walk anymore. “Our lives changed when the traumatologist, Julio César Ávalos Santiago, told me that my son’s leg was not going to be amputated because they would try to get a prosthesis. The implant was very expensive and thanks to the aid that we received from the Popular Insurance, my son was able to recover satisfactorily”, María de Jesús Hernández said. The Coordinator of the Traumatology and Orthopedic Service, Julio César Ávalos Santiago, who also performed the surgery, explained that it is possible to save the limb with

this type of surgical procedure –implanting an unconventional prosthesis- in order to preserve its functionality. This type of surgeries is not frequent in Mexico because of the low prevalence of the illness and the high cost of the prostheses. He said that the young man was stable, and he will be monitored with external consultations to evaluate the functionality of the prosthesis. Finally, he said that the Traumatology Area of the Hospital counts with highly qualified doctors, with certifications in force and with wide medical capacity. This makes it possible for the Hospital to treat other types of tumors that are not cancerous but that also attack the bone. April 16, 2014

One Month To Live: A Book

By Art Kunkin mr. Life extension I was 52 years old in 1980 andHow would your life change if you were told by a reputable doctor that you only had thirty days to live? After the initial shock, you would probably resolve to realize as many dreams as possible in the days that remain. You would say what you really think. You would be more aware of loving what you love. You would focus on whatever you care about most. You would stop wasting precious time! In the time you had left, you would become the person you had always wanted to be. You would stop doing what you are probably doing now; waiting for that “someday” to come when your finances improve or your kids to grow up so you could begin to live the life of your dreams. The book I am commenting on here is titled “One Month To Live.” and shows how to stop waiting for “someday.” In my opinion the authors of this book, Kerry and Chris Shook, provide their readers with a very practical plan to make the next thirty days, and all the months to follow, a life full of joy, a life with no regrets. As I have been reading this book, I have been making extensive notes about the suggestions they make so that I will remember to implement www.desertstarweekly.com

their plan in my own life. It is with that level of enthusiasm that I recommend this book. “One Month To Live” has a chapter devoted to each of the thirty days of this program. For example, at the end of Day One, the Shooks recommend the following. “As quickly as possible, without thinking too hard or too long, make a list of five things you’d change about your life if you knew you only had a month to live. Choose at least one to begin changing today, right now.” Then tell at least one other person about this decision and “ask that person to circle on a

calendar the date for one month from now and to ask you then how your ilife has changed.” At the end of the chapter for Day 2, the Shooks ask, “If you were certain that your life as you know it would end in a few weeks, what would be your biggest regret? Why?” Then you are informed that if you want other suggestions for the day, you can go to their website on the internet, www.OneMonthToLive. com. The chapter for Day 3 says in part, “If their days were numbered, most people would want to spend their time carefully

and deliberately. I haven’t met anyone who knew their days were limited who wanted to catch up on television reruns and maybe spend a little more time reformatting their hard drive. It’s not that these are bad pursuits. In fact, chores and mundane responsibilities are part of daily life. But if we knew we had one month to live, I suspect most of us would experience crystal clarity about how to prioritize our time. Certainly chores and duties have to be kept up on a daily basis, but even these can connected to larger goals – communicating with our spouse, teaching our kids, or …. The mundane can become magnificent if we’re plugged into each hour and each other.” The Day 3 chapter ends with “Keep a time journal this week and jot down how you spend each day….What was the biggest time waster in your past week?...How would you describe your current season of life? Does it feel like you’re buried beneath frozen tundra, emotionally hibernating? Or is it more like spring with signs of new life in view.?...” The Day 5 chapter ends with the following suggestion: “Make a list of the people you would want to see and to share your heart with if you knew your time on earth was limited to one more month…find a time to surprise someone you love. Take a friend to a favorite restaurant. Pick up the kids early from school and go to the park. Kidnap your spouse from the office and go out for coffee. Fnd a way to add quality connections to your life on a daily basis…” And we haven’t the space to go on even to Day 10 where it’s suggested that we explore the depths of forgiveness. Or to Day 13 where the book examines how others bug us because they act toward us like measuring tapes, hammers, vise grips, grinders or putty… Art Kunkin is the 85-year young journalist who published and edited the alternative weekly newspaper The Los Angeles Free Press starting in 1964, later becoming president of the

The Life Story of Mickey Rooney A Tragic Lesson of Financial Planning By Janis Gough Mickey Rooney’s Hollywood Star is currently on the sidewalk outside my Palm Springs office. On April 6th, this Hollywood legend died in his sleep at age 93. He was one of the greatest actors in history, whose career spanned over 87 years. Those who have great artistic abilities are often those who lose the most financially. People with exceptional creative talents are not always talented in their financial affairs. Mickey Rooney’s total estate at death was a mere $18,000, which seems remarkable for a person who was one of the last silent film actors alive, starred in over 200 films, appeared in many short films, stage, vaudeville, and television productions. He began his career at age six and never quit working. He proved his talents over many years. He ultimately proved he could do it all, do it well, and keep doing it. Then why did he not keep the great wealth he created? Rooney had ups and downs in his career, and from time to time had financial problems. He spent his money as he made

it and had trouble during the slow periods of not acting. Arrogance of wealth caused use and abuse of his wealth. Those who are consumed in creating wealth need trusted financial coaches to keep and invest wisely. A great coach is the Voice of Reason. Divorce, as we know, may subtract heavily from your wealth. Many celebrities, like Paul McCarthy, who lost $50 million in his divorce, are examples of this. Rooney had a total of eight marriages… do the math. In his last years, Rooney alleged senior abuse by his one stepson who drained his wealth and held him captive in his home. He left his estate of $18,000 to his second stepson. We all know that every family has those who can be trusted and those who cannot. Your health surrogates, who make those decisions for you when you are incapacitated, your Power of Attorney, your Accountant, your Legal Advisor and your Financial Advisor should be different people, which may eliminate the aspect of fraud and abuse. It will create checks and balances

system. Studies reveal that as we age, we become more vulnerable to these things. What can we learn from such a great entertainer’s life story? Start by saving 510 percent of our earnings, especially in early life. The power of compounding interest can make you wealthy. Staying grounded with wealth and notoriety and selecting those who you can trust to help is paramount. Many people spend uncontrollably when they get money and then struggle when things start to fall apart. Most importantly, demand routine reviews of your accounts, and if you are not savvy with monetary products and terms, take a trusted, more financially knowledgeable friends with you when doing your review. It is great to get a second opinion. No one financial advisor owns all the considerable ideas. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs and maybe contact via email: Janice@goughinsurance.com or call Cell (650) 342-7744. We offer a complimentary financial review and our book entitled, “Growth without Risk.”

‘Nebraska’— Bittersweet Oscar Contender

“Nebraska” was one of nine films nominated in the best-picture category and while it didn’t win, it is still a winner. A sweet, gentle comedy, “Nebraska” chronicles a road trip taken by a father and son. Woody Grant (Bruce Dern, nominated in the best actor category) is convinced he has won a million dollars, and no one can talk him out of trying to claim his prize. Eventually, over his mother’s protests, Woody’s youngest son, David (Will Forte) decides to drive his father to the publishing house in Nebraska to settle the matter once and for all. Watching the film I was reminded of a sweet elderly lady from church who kept buying magazine subscriptions. She was certain that some day she would be a big prize winner and, like Woody, no one could convince her that her chances of garnering a big cash pay-off were slim to none. The film begins as Woody heads off on foot, determined to walk to Nebraska to claim his million-dollar prize money. He is brought back home by a local cop. Upon his return, his wife Kate (June Squibb, nominated in the supporting actress category) berates him, calling him a moron. His older son Ross (Bob Odenkirk) sides with mom. He in turn suggests to David that it might be time to place Woody in a nursing home. David tries unsuccessfully to talk dad out of his quest,

but when he sees how much it means to his father, he decides to drive Woody to Nebraska to finally put his mind at ease. What follows next is a bittersweet road trip

of discovery. It’s a bumpy ride, but as a result of their travels David sees his ‘old man’ in a new and different way. As they travel to Nebraska, they pass through Billings where Woody

grew up, had a business and met and married Kate. Stacy Keach is great as Ed, Woody’s former business partner. Together they once owned a garage, and Woody is convinced that Ed took his compressor countless years ago. Getting that compressor back is also on Woody’s to-do list. At first, Woody seems like a crotchety alcoholic loser slipping into dementia. Maybe Kate is right. But during their road-trip, David starts to get to know his dad better as they talk about life in local taverns along the way. When they pass through his dad’s hometown, the two men connect with Woody’s brothers, their wives and children, a past girl friend Woody dated before he met Kate and his smarmy old business partner, Ed .. Due to a minor accident along the way, Kate decides to join David and Woody at his brother’s home, and a mini family reunion takes place. We also find out about dead family members on both sides when David takes his parents to the local cemetery. Kate has plenty to say, especially about Woody’s family. Squibb, as Kate, is funny, feisty and rather mean spirited, but her very pointed comments throughout give us further insights into their unhappy marriage. Piecing together all the

information gained along their way to Nebraska, David begins to see his father in a new and more compassionate way. He also discovers why winning the prize means so much to his father... “Nebraska,” from Paramount Pictures, is rated R for language ••••••••••••••••••••••••• Attention Hobbit fans, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is now available in a limited collector’s edition Bluray 3D Combo pack and DVD as of April 8. It is the second installment in a trilogy of films based on the popular novel, “The Hobbit” and was directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Peter Jackson. In the film Bilbo Baggins journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the Lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. They encounter countless hazards along the way including a swarm of giant spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. But when they finally reach the Lonely Mountain they face their greatest danger—the terrifying dragon, Smaug. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of fantasy action violence and frightening images...

Enjoying yogurt with all of the trimmings are Laurie Weitz, Shari Belafonte, Phyllis Mintz Eisenberg, Gavin McLe and Stepfanie Kramer. gift for entertaining with panache, this vivacious desert dweller makes it happen in a sweet way, literally! Her second annual cream social held at Beach Yogurt at Desert Crossing in Palm Desert attracted nearly 300 guests who

were invited to leave a donation for the Jewish Family Services of the Desert before selecting from a a variety of clever gifts such as wine stoppers and whimsical key chains ( gift bags provided!) courtesy of “Mrs. Eisenberg.” .

Choreographing her event with the help of a handy microphone she then directed guests to a lavish “do it yourself” yogurt buffet. Cindy Kjaergaard a perennial guest said the party reminded her of a mixer from the 1960s , “before computers dominated the social scene!” From that perspective, “friends of Phyllis” were in their glory, filling up on yogurt in flavors from raspberry pomegranate to salt caramel while visiting with old friends and meeting to new ones. Add to that creamy hot fudge, fresh raspberries and chocolate in all of its forms, from chips to crumbled brownies for a party with all the right ingredients. As at preceding parties, a tip sheet from Phyllis revealed gossip about new and earlier guests such as “Suzy H who dated Bob Dylan in the 1960s” and “Gavin M” who portrayed Captain Stubbing on the Love-boat television series.

Gavin McLeod was just honored as a recipient of a Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars but not with his favorite hot, at this party, which Phyllis says is her Eisenberg Gourmet Chicago Style Beef Hot Dog. “I promised Gavin it would be on the menu next year !,” she confirmed. Late arrivals were Laurie Weitz, on the Board of Directors for Modernism Week with pal Shari Belafonte, Lori Sarner the founder of Pegasus Therapeutic Riding and Dan McGrath, host of Morning Coffee with Dan on EZ 103.1 FM arriving with wife, Reggie. Between captivating bowls of yogurt and gobs of glorious toppings it was a blast from the past with selfstyled matchmaker, Phyllis Mintz Eisenberg, all smiles, responsible. resonant fashion again on April 18. Singer-songwriter James Mercer (of The Shins) and producer-artist Brian Burton (better known by his Danger Mouse moniker) mix indie rock, synthesizer-mining pop and alternative rock effortlessly across their second studio album. The propulsive and haunting “Perfect World,” accessible “After the Disco” and swirling acoustic ballad “Leave It Alone” are as original as they are sonorous. Information: BrokenBells.com.

Title: Til the Casket Drops (Hollywood Records) You might like if you enjoy: Tina Turner, Adele, Ruthie Foster Tell me more: Young American singer-songwriter ZZ Ward’s full-length debut “Til the Casket Drops” has been out since October 2012 but the album is continuing to find new audiences with its mix of infectious and emotive songs that touch on contemporary themes. Ward uses a modern radio-friendly approach but embeds her songs with a touch of blues, blue-eyed

soul and other classic genres to create a commercial brew that outdistance the majority of her contemporaries. The hard-hitting single “Put the Gun Down,” “Blue Eyes Blind” and title track all hit home. Information: zzward.com. based singer-songwriter-guitarist has issued a series of affecting independent releases. Her newly-issued American release, “The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas” and her two-weekend stint at Coachella should go a long way to help introduce her to audiences here in the U.S. Her eclectic “The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas” offers up dreamy folk (“Out Of The Woodwork,” “Porcelain”), low-fi indie folk rock (“Don’t Apply Compression Gently,” “Lance Jr.”), blues rock (“David”). Chrism is a part of Confirmation By Desert Star Staff Religious sacraments are deeply rooted in traditions passed on through the ages. A key component of many important church events involves use of a special oil known as chrism. Anointing a person with oil is part of both Baptism and Confirmation ceremonies for some faiths, and this oil also is used in the taking of Holy Orders. “Chrism” is actually a Greek word meaning “an anointing.” The terms “myrrh” and “consecrated

oil” are often used interchangeably. Chrism is associated with the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican Communion, Catholic, Armenian Apostolic, and Oriental Orthodox churches. Chrism may be used to administer certain sacraments and is frequently used in the consecration of churches, altars, altar stones and chalices and the blessing of bells and baptismal water. Chrism is made by blending pure olive oil and balsam. It is blessed by a bishop in a special

manner or by a priest recognized by the Holy See, the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Rome. Using the oil represents an anointing by the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, those who became priests or kings had oil poured on their heads and the Spirit of the Lord came to them, and chrism is still used to signify the spirit of God and the anointing by the Holy Spirit. This begins at Baptism, and a person’s confirmation strengthens their connection with God.

Some surmise that olive oil is used because it is rich, diffusive and abiding and represents the outpouring of sacramental grace. Balsam is fragrant and agreeable and typifies the innate sweetness of Christian virtue. Oil also provides strength and suppleness. Therefore, using oil can mean imparting a person with

strength and grace concurrently. During Confirmation, a bishop will place chrism on the forehead of the confirmands, and the sign of the cross is made with the oil. Though the oil may wear away after a little while, the aroma of the chrism will stay with the confirmand for some time. TF145171

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. s p o rt s Blackhawks Make Softballs Soar soFTBall Roundup By daniel maRinelli

La Quinta – The La Quinta High School Blackhawks’ power has dropped a bit from 2013 but against the Coachella Valley High School Arabs, balls were flying off La Quinta’s bats. With a total of 12 hits and four home runs, La Quinta followed up their 16-0 massacre of Coachella Valley on Tuesday, with a 9-3 victory against the Arabs on Friday. Junior Kelli Finan got the party started early with her first homer of the season – a threerun bomb to left field that put the Blackhawks up to 3-0 in the first inning. Senior Kendyl Scott mimicked Finan’s effort with a two-run home run of her own in the second inning, Scott’s first homer of the season, as well. Normally, a 5-0 lead would have been more than enough run support for the aptly named Star Padilla, who was top five in wins and ERA in the DVL last year. In 2014, however, Padilla has been

fighting off injury, and against the Arabs, her inability to locate her pitches was apparent. In the top of the third inning, after walking Briana Ramos, allowing doubles to Daisy Rodriguez and Sally Miramontes, and another single to Taylor Garcia, Blackhawks head coach Dede Grutz pulled Padilla from the game after recording the inning’s final out. “We talked to her early, and we asked ‘how much can you give us? You tell us as soon as you feel tired,’ and she said she’d try to go three,” Coach Grutz said. “You could see she was getting tired. She was starting to throw the ball down the middle too much, and she was ready to come out.” La Quinta needed their pitching to put a cork on a Blackhawks and Arabs shaking hands after the game. In the to a 5-3 lead, senior Dominique Blackhawks and gave up only top of the fourth inning, clinging Rivas entered the game for the one hit and two walks in the final four innings to close out the game. “Our pitching is huge this year,” Coach Grutz said. “We rely a lot on our pitchers to keep us in ball games. We have four pitchers that we can rotate when a team seems to start hitting (our pitching). Most teams have one or two pitchers; we’re blessed with four. That’s been a huge help.“ When Rivas entered the game, the Arabs’ offense died but the Blackhawks’ offense was still in home run mode. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Mia Olvera launched a two-run homerun to left field, Olvera’s second home run of the season. Finally, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Finan blasted her second homerun of the game; a two-run shot to left field. Blackhawks pitcher Dominique Rivas tries to strikeout Sally Miramontes (photo by Dan Marinelli) “We’ve seen their pitcher, and we’ve hit a lot of fly balls off of her – which is conducive to hitting home runs,” Coach Grutz mentioned. “I said it would be a good day for some home runs, and for us to hit four in a game – since we’ve only had three in our first 16 games – was pretty huge.” In addition to her two home runs, Finan finished with a double and five RBIs. Senior Sidney Halbeisen ended the game with two singles, a double and a run

scored for La Quinta. In the last three games, including Friday’s game, the Blackhawks have broken out and scored 37 runs – the most runs La Quinta’s scored over a three-game stretch all season. Despite their recent offensive flurry, scoring roughly 12 runs a game for the rest of the season will be hard for the Blackhawks to maintain. “We have to [play small ball] this year. Last year, we hit a ton of home runs and our batting average was .450. This year was down to maybe .330,” Coach Grutz said. “Doing the things needed – hitting behind runners is what we’re finally learning, and they’re buying into that philosophy.” The Blackhawks (11-6 Overall, 3-1 in DVL) continued their quest for an eighth consecutive DVL title at home against the Palm Springs High School Indians on Tuesday. The Blackhawks travel to Palm Springs to take on the Indians on Thursday and Friday. The games on Thursday and Friday start at 3:15 pm. The Arabs (9-7 Overall, 2-2 in DVL) looked to get back on track Monday at Calipatria High School against the Hornets. The Arabs welcome the Hornets to Thermal on Thursday. Thursday’s game starts at 3:30 pm.

Cracking Egg Myths in Time for Easter By Desert Star Staff Easter eggs are a centerpiece of many family traditions come Easter Sunday. Easter eggs symbolize fertility and rebirth to some, but many people associate Easter eggs with youngsters scouring the yard in search of treasure. Myth: Easter eggs are safe to eat after your egg hunt is over. Fact: Hard-boiled eggs generally remain safe to eat at room temperature for about two hours. If the temperature outside or indoors is very warm, the eggs should be eaten within one hour. People risk food-borne illnesses if they consume Easter eggs that have been left out for several hours or overnight. It is better to dispose of colored eggs after the annual egg hunt or at least keep hardboiled eggs refrigerated until the hunt begins. Myth: It is unsafe to eat all dyed Easter eggs. Fact: Whether dyed eggs are safe or not depends on the type of dye used. Many kits use vegetablebased dyes that are food-safe.

These same pigments are used in traditional food coloring. Even if the dye has penetrated beneath the shell, it should still be safe for consumption. Kits for blown-out eggs may use dyes that are not food-safe. Also, people who are allergic to certain food dyes might want to avoid eating dyed eggs. Myth: Pastel-colored eggs have long-rooted religious significance. Fact: An Easter egg hunt is a tradition that originated with pagan spring festivals. But like many pagan practices, Easter egg hunting was eventually adopted by Christians and assigned religious significance. In the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, Easter eggs are dyed red to represent the blood of Christ shed on the cross. The hard shell of the egg symbolizes the sealed Tomb of Christ for many. In A.D. 1610 under Pope Paul V, the Christian Church officially adopted the Easter egg custom that the eggs symbolize the resurrection. Myth: An Easter egg roll is an American tradition.

Fact: In Germany, England and other countries, children traditionally rolled eggs down hillsides at Easter. This practice may have initially symbolized the rolling away of the rock from Jesus Christ’s tomb before his resurrection. When European immigrants arrived in North America, they brought these Easter egg traditions with them. One of the more popular Easter egg rolls of modern day takes place on the White House lawn, where children push an egg through the grass with a long-handled spoon. Some say this tradition was established by Dolly Madison in 1814. Myth: Fact: It is believed that because the sun is equidistant from the south and north poles on the spring equinox, special gravitational forces apply on this day. These forces should make it possible to balance an egg on its end only on this day. However, eggs can be balanced at other times of the year. Perhaps instead of hiding eggs for Easter, families may choose to hold egg-balancing competitions.

the governing board of the Tour de Palm Springs. “Since inception, the Tour de Palm Springs has contributed over $2 million to local non-profit organizations. The event

is also important to the Valley’s tourism industry because it attracts tens of thousands of visitors to our Desert communities every year.” Recipients of 2014 Tour de Palm Springs charitable dollars include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Springs and Cathedral City, Angel View, Desert Arc, Coachella Valley Boys & Girls Club Heatwave Band, Cathedral City High School ROTC and numerous local high school bands and cheer squads. For one of the non-profit organizations benefiting from Tour de Palm Springs, Christina Bochicchio of Angle View explains, “Not only do we appreciate the financial support we receive from the Tour de Palm Springs, but

the event was an opportunity for our clients, many of whom use wheelchairs, to actively participate in the Tour de Palm Springs, itself.” For Desert Arc, another charity receiving Tour de Palm Springs support, Mitch Blumberg, Desert Arc Deputy Executive Director, says, “Desert Arc is pleased to benefit from Tour de Palm Springs donations.
