Live-stream Brings Sights & Sounds of Coachella Music Festival to All By Robert Kinsler What better way to prep for hitting Weekend 2 of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival than watching hours and hours of coverage of Weekend 1 via YouTube’s three channels of continuous live-streamed performances and artist interviews? Most of the Weekend
1’s high-profile performances staged April 12-14 were streamed, so music fans who were unable to hit the festival at Empire Polo Club in Indio were able to see and hear the parade of artists showcased at the event. Don’t Forget to Plan for Pet-Care for the Long Term
So many of us give our constant love and time to our pets; however, many forget to add their pets in their estate plan. Under our State laws, pets are considered personal property, and they need special consideration in an estate plan to ensure they receive the proper care when their owners can no longer care for them. A Pet Trust can dictate the type of care a pet will receive after its owner is gone and supply funds for that care; it also gives owners peace of mind knowing that their beloved pets will be cared for.

By establishing a trust for your pets, you can plan for their care for their life after you can longer care for them. Even if you do have a specific person to care for your pet(s), setting up the Pet Trust is recommended in the event of the successor caretaker’s untimely death or health problems. The pet trust will need to hold a certain sum of money to pay for the pet’s care. To determine the amount, first estimate the annual costs of food, veterinary care, routine medications, pet insurance, and supplements, as well as any other recurring fees, and then multiply that by the entire life expectancy of the pet(s). It is also essential to factor an extra amount, as your pet’s medical care costs may increase due to age. Be sure to identify each pet clearly. To others, your pet may look like another. A specific description of the pet and its features is necessary, to ensure and avoid copycat pets. (Because there is money involved, an unscrupulous caretaker might seek to have payments continue past a pet’s death.). Include a list of microchip numbers and
other identifying information in the trust document. Finally, the owner should clearly state in the trust that the care of the pet is the trust’s primary purpose and that all funds should be used to care for the pet. A remainder beneficiary can be listed for any funds remaining after pet’s death. Some chose a nonprofit animal welfare group. In most cases, you will need to designate both a trustee and a caretaker. Consider these choices carefully. The trustee will be in charge of the money and will

What’s Your 2018 Federal Taxpayer Tab? By Desert Star Staff Taxes may be as certain as death, and some experts say what also should be certain is knowing exactly how our tax dollars are being spent. According to new data, the average American paid about $14,000 in federal income taxes in 2018. The National Priorities Project at the Institute for Policy Studies crunched the numbers, and the most significant chunk of every tax dollar, nearly 30 cents, goes to health care. Program director Lindsay Koshgarian said military spending encompasses the second biggest share, at 24 cents. However, she noted, less than 5 cents of that goes to troop pay and benefits, while 12 cents goes to military contractors.

“Just for a point of comparison, Lockheed Martin got $48 billion. The entire budget for the Environmental Protection Agency is about $8 billion,” Koshgarian said. “So this is a huge amount of money that is going to federal contractors.” The average taxpayer spent about $100 on K-12 education, which is the same amount on immigration and border patrol, including family separations. About 15 cents of each tax dollar went to the federal interest in the national debt; 7 cents to unemployment and labor; and 6 cents to veterans. Koshgarian said federal crisis response is being funded at the expense of crisis prevention. She explained the average
taxpayer paid $179 to deal with the aftermath of natural disasters, such as floods, hurricanes, and wildfires. “And those disasters, we know, are probably exacerbated by climate change,” she said. “And so the $179 is 22 times as much as you contributed to renewable energy, which is only $8 for the average taxpayer.” Individual income taxes account for half of all federal government revenues, which Koshgarian said is a lot more than corporate taxes. “Back in 2017, individuals were paying $7 for every $1 paid by a corporation, and today that number’s gone up to $11,” she said. “Individuals are carrying more of the burden for funding the federal government compared April 17, 2019

Heinrich Himmler, commander of the S.S. and chief planner of the Jewish genocide, is aware of Germany’s desperate situation. He becomes more receptive to the idea of negotiating the release of prisoners to affect the allies to sign a treaty.
On April 20, 1945, a twohour wartime meeting took place between Himmler, and Norbert Masur, World Jewish Congress Swedish delegate. The location for the meeting was Gut Hartzwalde, (thirty miles north of Berlin) not far from Ravensbrück Concentration Camp, where starving and mutilated women were subjected to suffering and medical experiments. At this meeting Masur negotiated the release of 7,000 women, half of whom were Jewish, to be transported from Ravensbrück to the safety of Sweden. Masur was risking his life April 17, 2019

Goldman, professor of law at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and the founding director of the Loyola Center for the study of Law and Genocide. Seven years after losing his mother, Stanley A. Goldman traveled to Israel and visited her best friend. While conversing with her family, they encountered a pamphlet about Ravensbrück
that contained a picture of…their mothers. Pursuing details on how they were saved, Goldman began a search culminating in the publishing of his book ‘Left to the Mercy of a Rude Stream: The Bargain That Broke Adolf Hitler and Saved My Mother’ in December 2018. This powerful book is a spellbinding narrative of the horrors his mother endured during the Holocaust, the amazing secret of her survival, and the residual results this had on her and on her son.

Kim Jong-un gives US until end of 2019 to change ‘posture’
By Desert Star Staff The failed face-to-face talks with President Donald Trump raise a doubt whether the US is committed to improving relations with North Korea, its leader Kim Jong-un said, while promising to beef up the nation’s defense. Pyongyang will give the US till the end of the year to drop “its current calculation method” with regards to bilateral talks and come up with “a correct posture” instead, Kim said, the state-run KCNA news agency reported on Saturday. In that case, North Korea will consider holding a third summit with President Trump sometime in the future, he explained. Addressing the nation’s parliament, Kim said that his talks with US President Donald Trump in February raised “a strong question” whether the country was right in making concessions. The meeting, which was cut short by the White House and ended without an agreement, also cast doubt on the “true willingness”
of Washington to improve relations with North Korea. According to Kim, the problem lied in the “Americanstyle way of dialogue” which amounted to making “unilateral” demands without being ready to “sit face-to-face with us and settle the problem.” As Pyongyang waits for the US to change its stance, it will “keep increasing the defense capabilities,” the North Korean leader stressed. He didn’t specify what branches of the military will be strengthened and how. Donald Trump, meanwhile, wrote on Twitter that another meeting with Kim “would be good in that we fully understand where we each stand.” The relationship between the leaders “remains very good, perhaps the term excellent would be even more accurate,” he added. The president’s tone was in contrast with the stricter stance of US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, who earlier said that he wanted to “leave a little space” for easing
the sanctions on Pyongyang but affirmed that the restrictions would largely remain in place as long as the US deems North Korea a nuclear threat. Trump and Kim met for the first time in Singapore last year. They agreed to pursue peace, and North Korea pledged to work toward “complete denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula. In the months leading up to the
talks, Pyongyang froze its nuclear and ballistic missile tests and demolished the only known nuclear test site. The next round of talks, held in Hanoi, Vietnam, quickly fell apart. The US flatly rejected the proposal to partially lift the sanctions on North Korea in exchange to additional assurances that Pyongyang will not restart nuclear and ballistic missile tests. Trump’s
National Security Advisor, John Bolton, later clarified that the White House found Kim Jong-un’s idea of a ‘stepby-step denuclearization’ unacceptable as well. North Korean officials have since expressed a readiness to resume the nuclear and ballistic missile program if the US continues its aggressive policy toward the nation.
By Desert Star Staff Attorney General William Barr told a Senate committee that he believes FBI “spying did occur” on the Trump campaign in 2016. Trump himself has called on Barr to investigate the FBI’s counterintelligence probe. Elaborating on an earlier statement that he is assembling a team to investigate antiTrump bias in the FBI’s 2016 probe into the Trump campaign, Barr told a Senate appropriations subcommittee on Wednesday that he believes “spying did occur,” and will investigate whether that
surveillance was “predicated.” “I have an obligation to make sure government power is not abused,” Barr added. By “predicated,” Barr likely means he will look into whether the evidence used to kickstart the FBI’s 2016 investigation was solid. Republicans have long claimed that this evidence – namely a dossier of anti-Trump gossip collected by a British spy working for Democratic Party operatives – was flimsy and insufficient to warrant an investigation. The attorney general’s statement came minutes
after Trump called the FBI’s investigation – later handed over to Special Counsel Robert Mueller – “illegal,” “crooked,” and an “attempted coup.” Trump also asked Barr to investigate the probe’s origins, a request that Barr seems willing to heed. At a House appropriations committee hearing one day earlier, Barr said that he will review “all the aspects” of the FBI investigation, presumably including whether or not the agency actively worked to keep Trump out of the White House. Barr told representatives
that the Justice Department is currently wrapping up an investigation into whether the FBI misused the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to obtain a warrant to wiretap Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. The warrant was obtained based on evidence presented in the so-called ‘Steele Dossier’, a piece of unverified and Democratfunded opposition research that former FBI Director James Comey admitted he knew was unverified at the time it was presented to the FISA court. A report on the FBI’s
alleged FISA abuse is expected in “May or June,” Barr told the House hearing. The information contained in the Steele Dossier, as well as rumors gathered by FBI agents during a 2016 counterintelligence investigation codenamed ‘Crossfire Hurricane’, were used to kickstart the ‘Russiagate’ investigation in 2017, handed over to Special Counsel Robert Mueller after Director Comey’s firing that May. Two years later, Mueller’s report concluded that Trump did not collude with Russia.
By Desert Star Staff LEXINGTON, Ky. — Experts and people who have experienced being a refugee are discussing how to improve state and federal policy to better support Kentucky’s new immigrants. The panel discussion is happening today at the University of Kentucky. Each year, Kentucky accepts refugees in numbers more than twice the national average. In 2017, more than 1,500 refugees were settled statewide, according to the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy. Mary Beth McGavarn is a clinical psychologist and associate professor at the University of Kentucky who works with refugees. She said while housing, employment, and language are significant barriers to
getting settled, mental health often is overlooked. “We more and more think of mental health as an entity, or as a separate thing. And many people that we work with, they connect mental and physical health,” McGavarn said. “So they might not be saying, ‘My mental health is impacted,’ even though they’re talking about grief and loss, but they might be feeling it more in their bodies.” Since 2011, Kentucky has resettled refugees from Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and other war-torn countries. Studies have documented high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression among those fleeing their home countries. Diane Sumney is an English as a Second Language teacher with Fayette County
Schools. In 2008, her elementary school suddenly had an influx of around 80 refugees. Sumney started an after-school program to help children cope with their trauma. She said on the surface; children can appear to be adjusting. But often they have deep psychological issues from experiencing a war that manifest in other ways, such as drawing pictures. She told a story of one such student. “He started his picture, and he kept saying, ‘I shouldn’t be drawing this. I shouldn’t be drawing this,’ and he kept moving around, ‘I shouldn’t be drawing this,’ and he was drawing suddenly and frantically,” Sumney said. “This was a kid who was doing well in school and wasn’t having too many problems. Before he had finished that picture, he
had scooted somehow under the table at the end of the hallway and was in the corner.” For older children and teenagers, the experience of being helpless or dependent on others can be just as traumatic. Elisha Mutayonwa arrived in Kentucky as a teenage refugee from the Republic of Congo with his father and six siblings. “I went to high school here. My first day of high school, they wanted to put me in ninth grade. I was turning 19 then,”
Mutayonwa said. “They wanted to put me in ninth grade, so there was no communication between us. They didn’t know anything about my background - if I went to school before or anything.” Mutayonwa now is a student at Bluegrass Technical and Community College. He said the most significant change he’d like to see in the resettlement process is allowing refugees to make decisions for themselves.

Ed Markey unveiled their “Green New Deal,” a multi-trillion-dollar effort to overhaul the energy industry and slash America’s net greenhouse gas emissions to zero within a decade. The legislation’s title is fitting. The original New Deal failed to create jobs and prolonged the Great Depression. This Green New Deal would be no different -- it will destroy millions of jobs and push working-class Americans into poverty. The bill seeks to transition America to nearly 100-percent renewable energy sources. Right now, those sources account for 11 percent of America’s total energy consumption. To achieve this green future in just a decade, the proposed law would have to create enormous subsidies for wind and solar power and place new restrictions on oil and natural gas drilling. Such subsidies and restrictions have already been tried on much smaller, less ambitious, scales -- yet they’ve still failed miserably. Consider California. Back in 2015, the state passed a
bill calling for a transition to 50 percent renewable energy by 2030. The Golden State required power plants to generate more electricity from green energy and lavished millions in subsidies on wind and solar companies. California consumers are paying the price. From 2016 to 2017, electricity prices in California “rose three times more than they did in the rest of the United States,” according to policy group Environmental Progress. California now has the highest average electricity prices in the continental United States, according to my recent study from the Pacific Research Institute, a San Francisco-based think tank. The state also has the highest poverty rate and secondhighest gas prices nationwide. This big-government approach to fighting climate change isn’t merely expensive -- it’s ineffective. States like West Virginia and Ohio, which haven’t enacted such policies, have seen greater emissions declines than the Golden State. Germany’s renewableenergy push has similarly failed. “An average four-person household has to pay more than double for power in 2017 compared to 2000,” the
By Desert Star Staff AUSTIN, Texas — Texas has reduced the misuse of antipsychotics in nursing homes in recent years, but some advocacy groups say much more can be done. Amanda Fredriksen, associate state director at AARP Texas, explained about 12,000 nursing home residents are being given antipsychotic drugs for no legitimate reason, perhaps other than the convenience of staff in caring for patients who otherwise might be difficult. She said these medications are intended to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disease and Tourette’s syndrome, but are dangerous for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia. “These drugs can increase the risk of falls, increase blood glucose levels, they dramatically increase the risk of stroke - all these risks are well known,” Fredriksen said. “We outlawed physical restraints many, many years ago and now we’ve moved to chemical restraints. It’s fairly barbaric. “ Texas legislators are considering a pair of bills that would require the written consent of a patient or a family member before an antipsychotic drug is given to a nursing-home patient. House Bill 2050 was passed out of committee last week, and Senate Bill
1212 is expected to get a hearing in the coming days. Fredriksen said there’s no dispute that providing daily care for those suffering from dementia is difficult. However, she noted there are other alternatives to antipsychotics, including music and memory therapies and safer medications. “There are also behavior techniques that can be used to know how to anticipate some of the reactions from residents and intervene with different kinds of behavior techniques that don’t require any drugs at all,” she said. Last session, the state passed legislation that required additional training for nursing-home staff. And Fredriksen contended written consent is the next move towards improving the quality of care. “It added four additional hours of training for directcare staff for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and so that piece is there,” she said. “Getting that consent is really a modest step to protecting residents’ rights.” Texas nursing facilities reduced the unnecessary use of antipsychotics among residents by more than 56 percent between 2013 and 2018.
head of a consumer lobbying group told German radio. Ontario politicians’ green dreams have also turned into a nightmare for consumers. The Canadian province passed a law promoting green energy in 2009. From 2008 to 2016, electric prices spiked more than 70 percent -- prices jumped 15 percent between 2015 and 2016 alone. The provincial legislature recently repealed the law. The Green New Deal would replicate such failed schemes but on a much grander scale. If electricity prices surged here, working-class Americans would be clobbered. The
poorest 20 percent of U.S. wage-earners spend nearly 10 percent of income on electricity, while the richest 20 percent spend around 1 percent. Fossil-fuels keep energy bills affordable for working families. Natural gas production has surged roughly 50 percent in the past decade, causing electricity and cooking fuel prices to plummet. This production boom saved the average American family more than $1,300 in 2015. The oil and gas sector also provides jobs to workingclass Americans. Oil and gas firms support over 10 million jobs across the country -the Green New Deal would
eliminate nearly all these positions. By comparison, the Great Recession of 2007 to 2009 eliminated fewer than 9 million jobs. The Green New Deal is an expensive exercise in futility. It’s signature policies have already caused energy prices to soar from California to Canada. Scaling up these failed policies would wreck the U.S. economy and destroy millions of workers’ livelihoods. Dr. Wayne Winegarden is a senior fellow in Business and Economics for the Pacific Research Institute. This piece originally ran in OC Register.

HOROSCOPES ARIES
Often your compassion and sympathy are so very well hidden many do not recognize you actually possess these virtues. However, you definitely do, and it takes tremendous effort to bring them forth. No longer can you draw the curtain on spiritual realities. No longer will we think you don’t have tender feelings. No longer can you believe they interfere with practical daily life. Feelings and spiritual realities are actually guideposts, talismans, amulets and your protective lucky charms.
TAURUS It’s important to begin assessing goals, hopes and wishes for the future. As you do this, others are reaching out to you from groups and organizations asking for your intelligent, researched professional sense so they can begin to understand and be directed. Nurturing and strengthening ties within your group is a task only you can do at this time. Over and over you tell everyone to prepare. You are like John the Baptist on the shores of River Jordon.

Disney’s ‘Dumbo’ Flies High at the El Capitan
The one hour animated Disney film “Dumbo” was released in 1941. Now 78 years later a two-hour liveaction remake, directed by Tim Burton, has flown into movie theaters across the nation. In the new version, written by Ehren Kruger, Dumbo is still a baby elephant with oversized ears who learns to fly, but this time his mouse mentor has been replaced by the children of Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell). Holt was a star rider with the Medici Circus, owned by Max Medici (Danny DeVito), before Holt left to serve in World War I. As the story begins, Holt returns to the circus still wearing his uniform. He has lost one arm during the conflict in France but still wants to perform his old act. Unfortunately, due to financial hard times, the circus had to sell his horses. Now that his act is no longer in the show, Max gives him a new job which is caring for the circus elephants. This includes Mrs. Jumbo who is about to give birth. When her baby is born with huge ears, Dumbo
is regarded as a little freak. Fortunately, Holt’s children, Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) take the baby pachyderm under their wing and discover, with the aid of a feather, that Dumbo can fly. Sadly, due to an accident, Mrs. Jumbo is locked up, leaving Dumbo without his mother. Then, as in 1941 original, he comes to visit her as “Baby Mine” is sung. Soon Dumbo’s ability to fly makes headlines, and the very wealthy V.A. Vandervere (Michael Keaton) enters the scene accompanied by the beautiful French aerialist Colette Marchant (Eva Green). He wants Dumbo to be the headline attraction at his amazing amusement park “Dreamland.” He succeeds by buying the Medici Circus to acquire Dumbo. But what will happen to Dumbo, his mom and Holt and his two children? “Dumbo” is rated PG for peril, action, some thematic elements and scenes of jeopardy involving the little elephant which might be too intense for very young viewers. “Dumbo,” now playing

7 Pet Safety Tips for Fourth of July By Desert Star Staff With crowds of unfamiliar people and loud, scary noises, the Fourth of July can make even the most laid-back, four-legged family members apprehensive and unpredictable. “Research shows that more pets are lost on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year and animal shelters are most crowded after the holiday, filled with lost dogs and cats,” said Aimee Gilbreath, executive director, Michelson Found Animals Foundation. “Taking steps to protect your pet can help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for the whole family.” These tips can help keep your pet comfortable and secure: 1. Get identification tags. A collar and external ID tags are quick and easy ways to identify your pet if lost, and they make him or her instantly recognizable as someone’s pet. What information you provide on the tags may vary depending on your personal security concerns, but at the very least, include a phone number. If you’re concerned about noisy dangling tags, or the tags snagging and pulling loose, choose a flat style that affixes to the fabric of the collar. 2. Get your pet a microchip and register it. A registered microchip is one of the best ways to identify a lost pet who www.desertstarweekly.com
has slipped out of his or her collar. However, pet owners may falsely assume that just because their pet has a microchip, they’ve taken the necessary steps. It’s critical your pet’s microchip is registered with your current contact information, and Found Animals recommends updating your contact info anytime you move or change phone numbers. If you’ve adopted your pet from a rescue or other organization, it’s important to transfer the chip registration. Register your pet’s microchip for free at found.org. 3. Avoid the crowds. Avoid bringing your pooch to crowded events, parades and other gatherings with a lot of commotion or people. A combination of heat, loud noises, packed spaces and scorching blacktops can be stressful and harmful to your pet’s health. It’s especially wise to avoid bringing your pets to firework events, as they could panic and run. 4. Gear up with a leash and harness. Even leash-trained pets can get spooked by Fourth of July festivities. Secure pets with a well-fitting leash and collar or harness. Remember an anxious pet may slip out of a collar or repeatedly tug against a leash, so it may be necessary to take extra precautions. 5. Fit in a workout. Be sure to give your pets lots of exercise during the day so they’ll be a
little worn out before the scary noises start at night. A long run or play session during the day may help with your pet’s overall stress and anxiety levels. 6. Create a safe space inside and away from fireworks. Confining movement in dogs and cats actually has a calming effect on them. Provide your pet with a safe space, such as a cozy bed, room or crate. Also close windows and doors to minimize sound and escape routes. Another option is an anti-anxiety wrap or coat. In a pinch, if you’re away from home, you can even create one from a scarf. 7. Try a calming aid. If
you’re worried about a pet that stresses easily, talk to your vet in advance about CBD and antianxiety treats, chews, drops or other remedies that can help your pet relax. There are plenty of prescription and homeopathic

FILM REVIEW
Renée Taylor & Joe Bologna’s Hilarious “My Life on a Diet” Performed The Wallis Hollywood stars of stage and screen including, Diane Canon, Elliot Gould, Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss, Joely Fisher, Sharon Gless, and Frances Farmer, all turned out for the Los Angeles premiere of Renée Taylor’s My Life on a Diet, an award-winning one-woman autobiographical theatrical piece written by she and her late husband Joe Bologna, who also directed. Together for 52 years, they were a dynamic team, writing and performing in 22 plays, nine television shows, and four films including, Lovers and Other Strangers, It Had to Be You, and Made for Each Other. Performed on Harry Feiner‘s simple, but elegant drawing room set, enhanced by a colorful light design, and wearing Pol’ Atteu sparkling gold gown when Ms. Taylor made her entrance, the loving audience broke out into thunderous applause. Taking it all in, and in her so familiar, thick Bronx accent, she smiled, and with impeccable comic timing, said, “Thank you and good night,” a preview of the merriment that would follow throughout the 90-minute evening. Seated in a comfortable but elegant easy chair, Ms. Taylor walked us back in time, beginning with her childhood and took us through the ensuing decades. The text was illustrated by Michael Redman’s playful projection design depicting the fluctuating weight with which she has been dealing with her entire life. Mirroring an AA phrase, at one point she announces, “My name is Renée, and I’m a diet tramp.” She shares “I have tried every diet,” and throughout this entertaining evening, a variety of failed diets are flashed on the screen, some of which included, Dr. Robert Linn’s “Last Chance Diet,” about which she casually mentioned that one of his patients died. She tried the popular Dr. Herman Tarnower “Scarsdale Diet,” Lou Costello’s “18 Meatballs a Day” and took a shot at the “Okinawa Sea Food Diet.” Her only comment on the “No Food, No Water” plan was that you had to breathe through your nose. As for her always-slender husband, Ms. Taylor said Joe didn’t mind the fluctuations in weight “As long as we could keep dancing,” adding,” “Just don’t get so heavy I can’t dip you!” In addition to her litany of varying unsuccessful diets, this famous comedienne shared some of her experiences with some of the stars of yesterday, boasting about the time she sat next to Cary Grant. In her amusing journey back in time, Ms. Taylor reminisces about

her studies at the famous Actor’s Studio, under the tight rule of Lee Strasberg, Father of “The Method” style of acting. He once said to her, “Your problem, the young lady is inhibitions – you don’t have any!” She remembers trying to flirt with Marlon Brando who said, “Girl, you have to leave me alone.” While studying at The Studio, she formed a warm friendship with Marilyn Monroe who she worshipped. Her friend suggested that she try the “Grape Diet” but she ate so many, she actually gained weight. She and Marilyn were in the same class together, and in one of the more tender moments, she recalls saying to the blond bombshell “Marilyn, I want to be you when I grow up,” to which this famous movie star replied, “When you become me, tell me what it’s like,” reflecting the deeply troubled and confusing opinion of herself. Then there was the time she auditioned for a role in one of Tennessee Williams’ plays. After she read her lines in the best southern drawl she could muster, he turned to her and asked, “What part of New York are you from?” You know that old saw, “You can take the girl out of the Bronx, but you can’t take the Bronx out of the girl.” That charming accent led her to star in many shows, including playing the role of Fran Dreschler’s mother in “The Nanny. ” Throughout the evening, interspersed with her funny stories, supporting visuals depicted scenes from her professional life including clips from her 23 appearances on the “Jack Paar Tonight Show,” as well as guest gigs on ‘The Perry Como Show,” and a shot of her and Jerry Lewis with whom she co-starred in The Errand Boy. Her career path led her to encounter some of the most famous personalities of the day from Jimmy Durante and Elizabeth Taylor to Orson Welles, Joan Crawford, and Elaine May, and later on to Barbra Streisand, who also gave her diet advice. Musing about her dating experiences, she said, “I dated a lot of men. I felt there was safety in numbers. In remembering Joe, she tells the story of how they met and how she was immediately attracted to him. He warned her that he basically liked to play the field and because she came on so strong on the first date, he didn’t call her again for a while. But, as history would prove, he couldn’t get her out of his mind. He finally called her saying that he would give being monogamous a shot. Six months later they were married, and with the high attrition rate of so many show business marriages, they

Ms. Taylor reminisces that when she and Joe decided to write this one-woman show, she had a conversation with Nora Ephron, who wrote the hit show, Love, Loss and What I Wore. Renée thought she’d do a riff on that and name her show, Love, Loss, and What I Ate, but My Life on a Diet is what emerged. Ending on a humorous note, she quips about her latest diet adventure, which is Vegan, but admits, “Once,

Plan a Stress-Free Group Getaway By Desert Star Staff The arrival of vacation season means it’s time to stop daydreaming about that getaway and start making some travel plans. Getting organized for a grand adventure, especially if you’ll be traveling with a group, requires some careful planning before you begin making reservations. Get started planning your dream vacation with these travel tips from the experts at Vrbo: Narrow down the location. Vacation planning often begins with an idea more than a specific destination. For example, you may want to lay on the beach or visit the mountains. The first step should be figuring out exactly which beach or which mountain range captures your attention. Research your options online and look for information such as lodging, food and activities you may want to explore. Set a budget. Daydreaming about a luxury excursion may be appealing when it’s all in theory, but your bank account may have a different opinion. Also remember that if you’re traveling with a group, you’re likely to encounter household finances different from your own, so you’ll need to set a budget that works for everyone. Determine how you’ll get there. The smaller your group, the more options you have for reaching your destination. As the group grows, you may have fewer alternatives, particularly if you want to travel together. For example, it can be difficult to get a large block of seats together on a commercial flight. Think about where you’ll stay. Vacation rentals typically offer more space and privacy than hotel rooms and allow everyone to stay together. Many offer amenities like a backyard or pool, and guests can split the cost several ways. You can give others a chance to weigh in with a tool like Trip Boards, a feature on the Vrbo website and mobile app that lets friends and family members collaborate during the decision-making process and find the perfect vacation home together. With inviting, voting and commenting capabilities, fellow travelers can see each other’s favorited properties, vote and leave comments on which vacation homes they like best. Discuss an itinerary ahead of time. With multiple personalities and interests involved, it can be challenging to keep everyone on a set schedule. Some may prefer to sleep in and others may have specific ideas about what time meals should be. Even if you don’t have a formal itinerary, it’s a good idea to talk

through the schedule ahead of time, so expectations are clear. Breaking off into smaller groups part of the time may work better than keeping the entire group on the same schedule throughout the trip. Look for group discounts. Though a larger group poses some challenges, there are also some perks that make bigger better. As you’re planning activities and making reservations, be sure to inquire about specials and rates reserved for larger parties. Use apps to get organized. From organizing everyone’s travel schedules to voting on activities and coordinating payments, you can rely on apps to orchestrate most of the minutiae of a group getaway. or a parent of a child diagnosed with a chronic illness, the future can be scary and overwhelming. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the WZR PRVW FRPPRQ W\SHV RI LQÀDPPDWRU\ bowel diseases (IBD). These chronic conditions produce similar symptoms, use similar therapies, and are both treatable. However, they are not the same. However, it most commonly develops right where the small and large intestine meet. In ulcerative colitis, only the colon and rectum are affected. No one knows for sure what causes Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, but experts believe several factors may lead to the development of the diseases, including genes, environmental elements like viruses and bacteria, and inappropriate immune reactions.

How does it affect children?
When IBD is diagnosed in childhood, it may be more extensive and follow a more severe course than when it is diagnosed in adulthood. While symptoms are similar in adults and children, some children with IBD experience delayed puberty and some fail to grow at a normal rate. 5 Tips to Manage Money Smarter
Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff There’s more to managing your money than paying your bills and successfully avoiding overdraft charges (although those are definitely steps in the right direction). Effectively managing your money takes time and planning, but the payoff may be a stronger financial future. Create a budget. Some people avoid making a monthly budget because they think they don’t need one. However, having a clear idea of the money coming in
and going out of your bank account each month can help you make better spending decisions. A budget doesn’t have to be complicated; it can be as simple as a spreadsheet that lists your monthly income and expenses. Be sure to consider long-term debt, like student loans, and treat your savings account as a payee you owe each month. Track your spending. In a similar vein, it’s a good idea to see where your nonbill-related spending goes. For example, you may stop by the
dollar amount, doing some due diligence before purchases is a good idea. The average millennial will do 4.6 hours of research before buying a big-ticket item like a mattress or car, according to a survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Mattress Firm. Millennials are also likely to seek input from others, with one in five consulting four or more people for their opinions on a purchase. “Doing research before making a big purchase can make all the difference,” said Timothy Mayes, Mattress Firm’s senior manager of eCommerce merchandising. “There are several resources available such as online reviews, blogs grocery store more frequently and even guides on the best than you realize, and each time to buy that can help of those trips is likely going save you money on larger to cost you more than if you purchases. Finance purchases responsibly. Building credit takes time and responsibility, but if you don’t ever borrow money, you won’t have a chance to earn the rates reserved for exceptional credit holders. Financing a moderately sized purchase, such as a mattress, is a good starting point. It may be out of reach for a cash payment, but the balance you carry could be paid in a reasonably short timeframe. To build good credit, always make payments on time and make monthly payments larger than the minimum payment - which is usually just the interest - so you’re actually paying down the principal. • Reduce the brightness or contrast on your screen to a comfortable level. You can find these controls in the settings of your phone or tablet and on the monitor or keyboard of your computer. • If your glossy screen is prone to glare, consider an anti-glare protector to reduce reflected light. • Try adjusting the ambient light around you. Strategically placed lamps can produce the proper lighting and result in less visual fatigue than fluorescent or LED light bulbs. • Maintain good posture and adjust your seating to assure you’re viewing screens at the proper angles and distances. The top of your computer monitor should sit just below eye level at about an arm’s length away from your face.
Many employers offer vision insurance, and your human resources department can usually provide information about vision plan options. Vision insurance can be an affordable solution and offer benefits typically not included in a health insurance policy. It can cover routine eye exams, most likely offer a benefit for corrective lenses and may provide discounts for additional lens options. Some vision carriers, like Unum, also offer online tools or mobile apps to help you manage your benefits and find qualified, in-network eye doctors in your area. Give Your Eyes a Rest
Tips to reduce digital eye strain By Desert Star Staff Imagine how strained and tired your arms would feel if you carried around a 10-pound rock for 12 hours. That’s essentially what you’re doing to your eyes when you focus on digital devices all day. If you’re experiencing headaches, eye fatigue, burning, stinging, redness, watering, blurred vision or even pain in the neck and shoulders after extended time on your devices, you may be experiencing digital eye strain. A 2018 study from employee benefits company Unum found that nearly 40 percent of adults in the United States spend more than 12 hours a day looking at various digital devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and television screens. In the same study,
34 percent of respondents said they feel they spend too much time on their devices. In today’s always-on digital culture, it can be hard to escape the need to stay connected, but making a few slight adjustments can have a positive impact on your overall well-being. Dr. Chris Wroten, an optometrist and partner at Bond-Wroten Eye Clinic, suggests a simple, easyto-remember rule of thumb for relaxing your eyes. “Every 20 minutes, shift your eyes to look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds,” he said. “This 20-20-20 rule can help relax the eyes and allow them to focus on non-digital objects in the distance.” Other tips to reduce digital eye strain include:

• Ensure your prescription is up to date, especially if you wear corrective lenses. If it’s been longer than a year since your last eye exam, consider making an appointment with your eye doctor. Good visual health should be a component of maintaining your overall health and well-being. While the frequency of visits to your eye doctor typically varies for individual needs, most healthy adults should receive a comprehensive eye exam every year or two, which is included in most vision insurance plans. Eye exams can detect vision problems and allow you to adjust with corrective lenses, if necessary. This visit can also allow you to discuss any symptoms you may be experiencing, including eye strain.

CA Lawmakers Move Multiple Animal-Welfare Bills Forward By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A slew of animal protection bills moved forward in the California Legislature this week – including proposals to limit animal abuse, hunting, poisoning and trapping. Senate Bill 580 would force people convicted of such serious crimes as aggravated cruelty, bestiality and hoarding to undergo mental-health evaluation and get treatment if necessary. Kim Kelly legislative affairs director with the Animal Legal Defense Fund says lawmakers are seeing the need to deal with people who abuse animals, before they hurt people. “This is a way to intervene early on,” says Kelly. “Oftentimes, people who are violent towards animals,
there might be an underlying issue. And so, this mental health evaluation would get to the root of the problem and hopefully get them appropriate counseling, so that we could stop the escalation.” Assembly Bill 1788 would ban certain types of commercial rat poison that also harm wild animals that eat the carcasses. Other bills would ban trophy hunting of bobcats and commercial trapping of other animals for fur; forbid the use of certain endangered animals in circuses, and criminalize the sale of most fur products. Opponents of many of these bills say they represent government overreach. California law makes it a misdemeanor to sexually assault an animal. But Kelly says the current definition
Traps set for wild animals often injure pets. Assembly Bill 273 would ban commercial trapping in California. (Wikimedia Commons) is too narrow, and her group supports Assembly Bill 611 to change that. “So, the bill would strengthen the law in California by expanding the definition,
preventing offenders from possessing animals, and requiring veterinarians to report signs of animal sexual abuse to law enforcement,” says Kelly. Currently, eight California
cities ban the procedure of declawing cats because they say it is painful for the animal. Assembly Bill 1230 would institute that ban statewide.
“We will rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral.”
By Desert Star Staff French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral within five years after the devastating fire which ravaged the building on Monday and said the “catastrophe” should be turned into a moment of unity. Speaking directly to French citizens in a televised address, Macron said the fire which destroyed the steeple and large sections of the church’s roof, was a “traumatic experience” not only for France but for the whole world. “We will rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral — and we will make it even more beautiful than before,” he said. Macron said that the fire had caused everyone in
France and around the world to come together and play their role. “The foreigners wept, the journalists wrote their articles, the writers dreamed, the photographers showed us what was happening,” he said. France has seen wars and revolutions that destroyed its towns, cities, ports, and churches, he said, but “every time, we rebuilt them.” Macron’s five-year plan for rebuilding the iconic Gothic cathedral is on the optimistic end of the scale, as some experts have suggested renovations could take at least ten years. Donations to rebuild efforts have been pouring in in the aftermath of the fire, with French businessman Francois-Henri Pinault
pledging €100 million and fellow billionaire Bernard
Arnault offering €200 million. More than €600 million in total has already been promised to the effort within 24 hours. Preliminary investigations into the fire have found no evidence that it was a case of arson and Paris’ city prosecutor said officials are “favoring the theory of an accident.” Aerial images show the tragic extent of the damage caused to Paris’ iconic Notre Dame Cathedral, ravaged by a massive blaze on Monday night. After some 12 hours of burning, the 850-yearold Gothic building stands charred and broken. LIFE’s Gigarama project has created ‘The broken heart of Paris’, a 360-degree aerial panorama image, where you can zoom
in and change your angle to survey the extent of Notre Dame’s devastation. Pictures taken from above show the blackened expanse of its collapsed roof and a gaping hole in the center, where its spire used to be. It took more than 400 firefighters to contain the blaze, which started in scaffolding erected for restoration works. The damage is still being assessed, and many of the relics kept inside Notre Dame are believed to have survived, but the roof, the spire, and the cathedral clock were destroyed. Some of its newer 19th-century stained-glass windows were damaged, but the main 13th century ones including the rose window survived.

Blue Ribbon Citizens Committee Calls for Action
By Desert Star Staff Desert Hot Springs, Calif. – April 15, 2019– After weeks of analysis, a citizen’s study group called upon state legislators to restore local control and groundwater management authority to Mission Springs Water District (MSWD) within its service boundaries, according to a report released today. The Water Rights Study Group was formed by MSWD in cooperation with members of the greater Desert Hot Springs community to examine and advise the District on issues stemming from Desert Water Agency’s seizure of groundwater management from MSWD. The Group included members from the faith and business communities, hoteliers and Mission Lakes Country Club. Representatives from the City of Desert Hot Springs and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians also participated. “Our group has found that Mission Springs Water District and the local community are no longer in control of our

groundwater or our future, due to DWA’s actions,” said Kephyan Sheppard, the Study Group’s chairman and a leader with Advancing Desert Hot Springs. “The Study Group unanimously concluded that losing local control will negatively impact our community’s future growth, economic opportunities, and job creation. Our local legislators need to correct this inequity which has left MSWD as the only water district in the Coachella Valley that is not managing its groundwater.” Since 1953, MSWD has successfully managed local groundwater and produced award-winning water for its customers. In 2015, DWA seized authority over Desert Hot Springs’ groundwater by electing itself the exclusive Groundwater Service Agency over MSWD under the state Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. DWA’s action came despite objections by the MSWD Board of Directors, and the City of Desert Hot Springs and is the subject of ongoing litigation.
“Our community needs to make their voices heard, and we must take action to protect our future,” said Study Group member and DHS Agua Warriors activist Greta Carter. “Water is life, and the Desert Hot Springs community must be in control of this vital resource so we can write our future.” In its conclusion, the Study Group strongly urged state lawmakers to reverse DWA’s seizure of local groundwater management and to restore Mission Springs Water District’s local control of the community’s groundwater in its service boundaries. The Study Group also found that DWA’s districting effort will not solve this issue. As a locally-elected board, MSWD better understands the needs of the greater Desert Hot Springs community and provides residents with direct control over local matters, the Study Group concluded. “We are grateful to the residents and business owners who have volunteered their time to provide the April 17, 2019
community with insight on this critical issue,” said MSWD Board President Randy Duncan. “MSWD will
continue to fight for the rights of our constituents.”Source: MSWD John Soulliere

North Coast Rep Theatre of Solana Beach Presents “All In The Timing”
L-R Taylor Renee Henderson, Omri Schein, Uma Incrocci, Christian Pedersen, Noelle Marion & David McBean. Photo by Aaron Rumley By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Artistic Director David Ellenstein has a penchant for sniffing out brilliant, but slightly off-beat, cleverly written material from some America’s most gifted playwrights and screenwriters. It takes experience and unerring skill to be in tune with what pleases and entertains North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT) patrons and audiences over his eighteenyear stewardship. Like that old, but effective, All-State Insurance TV commercial that asks … “are you in good hands?” The answer for NCRT patrons is a resounding YES! Playwright David Ives is a prolific playwright, screenwriter, and novelist who is best known for his comic one-acts and is considered the master of the short form. Ives is an excellent choice from which to cull plays that are creatively crafted, and boast a broad appeal be they comedies like “All in the Timing”, now on stage at North Coast Repertory Theatre, in Solana Beach, or his drama “Venus in Fur”, garnering a 2012 Tony Award for actor Nina Arianda. He definitely knows how to quickly engage an audience. “All in the Timing,” wonderfully staged by NCRT artistic director David Ellenstein, has surrounded himself with a winning ensemble cast of professional, gifted farceurs, comic actors and performers who know their way around a sharply written and smartly directed production; which is becoming the norm these days at NCRT. The tone of the production is wisely set by director Ellenstein in the first sketchpiece titled ‘Sure Thing’ with actors Noelle Marion and Christian Pedersen who meet in a café. Their dialogue continually resets each time they say the wrong thing, until, www.desertstarweekly.com
they romantically connect. This piece will bring a smile of recognition as well as laughter to many in the audience as they harken back to their own experiences in the mysterious art of how to meet women as practiced by men. It’s funny, and it’s poignant at the same time. Pedersen’s cautious opening gambits are hilarious, and Marion’s retorts are a deflecting delight. Although written twentysix ago, the play features six comedy vignettes that are highly relevant to audiences of 2019. There is no dated material in this cleverly written and sensationally performed production. The only clue to its original time period comes in the second sketch titled ‘Words, Words, Words’ that reminded me of the 1950/60’s Bob Newhart comedy routine about whether an infinite number monkeys if given the time, could eventually write Shakespeare’s masterpiece “Hamlet.” Omri Shein, as Milton, David McBean, as Swift, and Uma Incrocci, as Kafka make believers of the audience in that they might come close but… nah, probably not. But, it’s fun watching them try. In “Foreplay, or The Art of the Fugue”, the full ensemble cast of three couples simultaneously play a game at a miniature golf course: Taylor Renee Henderson as Amy; Omri Schein as Chuck; Noelle Marion as Annie; David McBean as Chuck 2; Uma Incrocci as Alma and Christian Pedersen as Chuck 3, give the audience a glimpse into competitive male preening self-imagery. The sketch piece titled “The Universal Language,” is a goofy, but hilarious send-up of “Esperanto,” the erstwhile single-language equalizer between the world’s many languages that never caught on. Here we observe a naïve, stuttering young woman, Dawn (Taylor Renee Henderson) who wants to sign up for lessons in the school to help her
solve her speech impediment problem. Don, the founder of a scam teaching language school, is eager to sign her up. The performance as the con-man is deliciously and entertainingly played by a terrific David McBean. Don only speaks in his created language called ‘Inamunda.’ A bewildered but
eager Dawn jumps into the lesson. Words like “Velcro” for “Welcome” and Harvard U for “How are you?” gives one a hint of the endless possibilities for tongue-twisting sounds of the Inamunda vocabulary that keep the audience in stitches. In sketch number five “Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread,” is a creatively gentle poke-in-the-eye to the dissonant musical compositions of Philip Glass. Glass was an outlier musical composer for years but never bended to demands of changing his style. Again the full cast of Noelle Marion, Taylor Renee Henderson, Uma Incrocci, Omri Schein, Christian Pederson, and David McBean bring the house down with a celebration of stubbornness and tenacity played by Schein as Philip Glass who won’t take no in trying to buy his loaf of bread. The closing sketch “Variations on the Death of Trotsky” is a page right out of the theatre of the absurd playbook. Omri Schein as Leon Trotsky performs Leon with a mountaineer pick axe sticking out of the top of his
head throughout the sketch as if nothing is amiss. His wife Mrs. Trotsky (Uma Incrocci) also is oblivious. It’s David Ives at the top of his game along with this outstanding cast at the top of their games. If all the on-stage action intimidates you when it comes to the question what’s going on? Relax. Sit back and enjoy this wonderfully funny production. Your epiphany or “Ahah” “got it” moment is just waiting to kick in. “Patience, Watson. All will be revealed.” The technical credits at NCRT are always outstanding thanks to Set Designer Marty Burnett and Lighting Designer Matt Novotny, Costume Designer Elisa Benzoni, Sound and Projection Design by Aaron Rumley, Props Designer Phillip Korth, Music Director David McBean, and Stage Manager Cindy Rumley. “All in the Timing” performs at North Coast Repertory Theatre, in Solana Beach and runs through May 5, 2019. The comedy performs without an intermission and runs about 90 minutes. It’s a must see Production.
