Protect Your Money: There’s an App for That By Desert Star Staff Since the credit card made its debut as an alternative to cash over 50 years ago, more Americans are using debit or credit cards as a primary payment method than ever before. In addition to the convenience and simplicity of using a card, another reason they have become increasingly popular is because they offer certain protections for consumers. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, your maximum liability for fraudulent credit card transactions is $50 and many credit cards promise zero liability for all fraudulent

transactions. While similar protections apply to fraudulent debit card transactions under the Electronic Funds Transfer Act, it’s important to remember that a stolen debit card, however, impacts your bank account balance as soon as the fraudulent transaction occurs. This can lead to other problems, like overdrafts and bounced checks. For all these reasons, consumers should pay careful attention to their statements to ensure all the transactions taking place are legitimate, advise experts. To understand how you are protected, it’s a good idea to check with your

bank to understand their policy on customer liability and to inquire if they offer solutions you can use to protect your card if it’s lost or stolen. While some card issuers have evolved cards to offer security chips, as well as have created phone apps to protect against unauthorized charges and monitor purchase activity in real time, some banks are taking extra steps to make debit card usage more secure by putting even more technology in the hands of their customers. For example, Ally Bank’s Card Controls app -- available at no cost to both checking and money market customers

with active debit cards and Android or Apple phones -- was designed to give customers more control at their fingertips. By using a secure mobile app associated with their bank accounts, users have the ability to turn their debit card on and off, enable only certain types of transactions, set maximum single transaction amounts and create alerts to be notified when transactions occur. Customers can even set location awareness controls so that the card can only be used within a certain proximity of their phones or within a specified geographic region. “The ability to proactively

control, monitor and manage card usage from a mobile phone provides greater peace of mind,” says Diane Morais, president of Consumer & Commercial Banking Products at Ally Bank, Member FDIC. Fortunately, technology advancements are resulting in new tools that banks can offer their customers to make it easier to control and monitor how and when your card is used, but the services vary from institution to institution. To ensure you are using all the resources available to protect your money, find out what your bank offers to make debit card usage more secure. StatePoint

By Janice Gough During the Easter season, we think religiously of miracles, however I offer ideas of the ways, life insurance becomes a gift of miracles. Sometimes we forget the many ways it can protect our lives and businesses. Life insurance is a fundamental part of a responsible and reliable financial strategy. While it only takes a little planning for one to protect themselves and their families from future instability, shockingly, almost 50% do not have any kind of life insurance. Some believe a life insurance policy is either too expensive, too complex, or simply impossible to understand and since it is an intangible product, people procrastinate in getting it and may leave their families unprotected, in the event of an unfortunate tragedy. These are some additional ways life insurance is used and how it can play a miracle in one’s life plan. 1. Replacing Essential Income As the we move through life, we will likely accumulate a range of expenses, from large debts like mortgages and loans -or to medical bills or other emergencies. If one is struggling to pay for these expenses, you may consider withdrawals from your life insurance cash value as a source of additional income. Even if you are still working, life insurance can offer a source of much-needed additional wealth in unexpected situations. For instance, as people today are living and working longer than previous generations, it’s important to think about how you will take care of healthcare expenses, if there is a long-term illness. There could be a need for child care, or money for care of a relative. By using the tax-free access to your cash value in your life isnurance, these expenses can

be managed. Another means to access immediate cash can be through policies that offer an added provision called a “accelerated benefit rider,” which can trigger some of the death benefit to be paid out while the insured is still living, under certain circumstances, such as a critical illness. The funds are available to use for any reason. For anyone who has ever accelerated the benefit of life insurance to care for someone and help them survive, you really experience the miracle of life insurance. As a financial planner, we recommend using life insurance to cover the expense of estate taxes, so other investments can continue to thrive, unimpeded by taxes, well beyond the death of the insured. 2. Equalizing Inheritance In an ideal world, most of us would prefer to offer an equal inheritance to each of our heirs. Unfortunately, the nature of the one’s assets may make this impossible sometimes, especially if more than one person must share an inherited home or business. Life insurance can provide a solution to this problem, by gifting the monetary value of life insurance to one heir, while leaving the asset itself to another heir. Rather than liquidating an asset and distributing the cash amongst each person, life insurance can provide a cash value equal to that of the asset itself. A family business owner can therefore give a business to one of his or her children, while also giving the value of the business (in cash) to the children uninterested in running the company. This strategy helps to balance out complexities in financial planning and provide a clearer view of how to organize the future. 3. Protecting a Business with Corporate Owner Life Insurance (COLI ) For those who run a business, the life insurance “cash value” generated from the long-term investments can

sometimes pay the premiums on a corporate-owned life insurance policy, or COLI. Key-person life insurance on executive individuals benefit the business’s continuation plan and can help the family of the employee, upon death. Now, corporations and non-profits can achieve the same benefits. COLI policies can give businesses the opportunity to fund benefit plan expenses, such as group life, medical, and other insurance plans, while increasing net income for the company overall. Many business owners look to enhance and protect their investments with COLI, because it can earn a competitive after-tax yield when compared to other investments, while acting as a hedge against benefit liabilities. While these policies can perform similarly to individually-owned life insurance policies, corporate packages can offer several advantages that other policies simply cannot match while promoting growth and limiting risk. 4. Accessing Personal Loans Life insurance is one of the few products that can offer useful ways to sidestep certain taxes. Permanent life insurance policies offer owners a taxfree solution to their financial needs. What’s more, while the insured is living, one can take tax-free loans from the cash value of a policy through loans or withdrawals. Interest on the loan may be lower than a bank loan. However, a policyprovider may ask the insured to use their death benefit as collateral. This means that if the loan is not repaid before death of the insured, beneficiaries will receive the net death benefit after paying off the loan. 5. Legacy Planning Finally, whether one is looking for a way to maintain a business after death of an owner, or wish to ensure that their beneficiaries receive the care and assistance they need, Life insurance can play a big part in planning the legacy you

leave behind. As a tax-free source of money, life insurance value can pay for charitable contributions, while allowing the one’s legacy to have a long-term impact for a worthy cause. It can be used to pay off taxes, debts, and other expenses that might make the future difficult for the family members. Although many people think about providing an income for their heirs, or paying funeral expenses, as the fundamental purpose for a life insurance policy; they may forget about using that cash to fund new opportunities for their loved ones. Legacy planning with life insurance may mean that if anything happens to the insured, the client’s children can still go to college without the burden of debt. Death benefits can pay for tuition, giving the peace of mind of knowing that they can still help loved ones accomplish their dreams. The True Value of Life Insurance Policies The primary purpose of a life insurance policy is to offer a source of relief for the family after the loss of a loved one, however, it’s important to remember that life insurance can also act as a flexible financial tool, which is perfect for leveraging a range of solutions to common problems. From giving one the freedom to maximize the benefits after retirement with additional resources to a standard pension, to helping with your plan for the future, or improving profits of your business, I encourage you to examine life insurance opportunities from all angles, to determine what’s best for you, your family and your future.

3 Ways Seniors Can Get More from their Smartphones

By Desert Star Staff With the rapid pace of new developments in

smartphone technology, it can be hard to keep up with all the changes, especially if you

grew up in an era when phones were attached to a cord. Phones these days aren’t what they used to be -- but that’s for the best, as smartphone technology can actually improve your life. Here are three easy ways that seniors can get more from smartphones: 1. “Read” audiobooks: Whether your hands are tied up gardening or cooking, or you simply want to give your eyes a rest, consider listening to books on your smartphone. You can purchase audiobooks a la carte or opt for a subscription plan, which offers deals, such as unlimited selections for a flat monthly fee. Features like bookmarks and back buttons make it easy to “flip through” a digital audiobook. 2. Use health apps to

By Desert Star Staff If you signed up for a new Medicare plan during Open Enrollment, it’s important to understand how your prescription drug costs may be affected. Even if you did nothing to alter your coverage, some features of your plan may have changed for 2017. Unfortunately, almost one-in-five Medicare beneficiaries don’t have a good understanding of their plan, and a good portion have some misconceptions about copays, according to a recent survey by Walgreens. Here are three easy steps to help you make the most of your benefits and find potential cost-savings for your prescription medications under your Part D coverage. Think Generic: When possible, consider using a less expensive prescription drug brand or generic.

These alternatives typically carry the same formulas at a reduced cost, saving patients substantially over time. Preferred Pharmacies: Verify whether your plan has preferred pharmacies -- which are pharmacies that have an agreement with a Part D plan to charge less than a standard network pharmacy. For example, Walgreens, which is a preferred pharmacy for many of the nation’s top plans, can help lower the cost of your copays, even to $0 in the case of Tier 1 generics on certain plans. “Depending on the design of your plan, coverage, and prescription drugs, you can pay higher copays at one pharmacy in comparison to another if your pharmacy is not in your plan’s preferred network! So, choosing the right pharmacy is definitely important,” says Mariah

Moon, the blogger behind “The Simple Parent,” who recently wrote about helping her mother research her options for lowering her drug costs as part of the #PartDAtWalgreens campaign. 90-Day Refills: “My pharmacist told me that many physicians are willing to write 90-day prescriptions for many of the medications that seniors are often prescribed. This not only saves time by requiring fewer trips to the pharmacy, but also may save copay costs,” says Shelley Webb, a registered nurse and founder of “The Intentional Caregiver,” who cared for her father in her home for four years and was recently sponsored by Walgreens to share tips about saving on prescription costs with her readers. Medicare beneficiaries seeking help navigating prescription drug costs

can find free resources at walgreens.com/topic/ pharmacy/medicarepartd. If you didn’t review your plan before renewing, it’s

not too late to become a savvy consumer and learn more. Doing so can help you save money. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff Parents and caregivers may be underestimating the importance of dental care for children’s “baby teeth.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 63 percent of children ages two to four see the dentist at least annually. Most dental benefits cover preventive care visits twice a year with no out-of-pocket

costs, and these visits are important for small children. Baby teeth, (also known as primary teeth), play an important role in a child’s overall healthy development. If cavities begin and are left untreated, they can become painful and possibly infected. Loss of these teeth prematurely may impact eating, speaking, learning and self-esteem. Baby teeth help guide the

way for permanent teeth to erupt into proper position. “Tooth decay is preventable. The investment of only a few minutes each day on the part of parents and caregivers, coupled with regular dental checkups, goes a long way in creating healthy smiles to last a lifetime,” says Dr. Diane MontiMarkowski, clinical program director for Cigna Dental. She offers these oral hygiene tips for those caring for small children: • Plan to have your child visit the dentist by his or her first birthday or within six months after the first teeth appear. • As a child’s teeth start to come in, brush them gently

twice a day with a child-sized toothbrush and water. • Begin flossing a child’s teeth daily when there are two teeth that touch. • Do not put your baby to sleep with a bottle of formula, milk, juice or any other liquid other than water. • Consider introducing toothpaste for children who are two and older and are able to follow directions to spit after brushing. The American Dental Association recommends using fluoride toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice for children younger than three years old and a pea-size amount for children three to six years old. By age three or four, your child should be able to brush with your supervision.

• Make brushing fun. Let your child pick out the color of his or her toothbrush. Play a favorite song or set a timer to help children understand that good brushing takes about two minutes twice a day. Find more tips at Cigna. com/dental-resources. For detailed questions or concerns about a child’s oral health, it is important to consult a dentist. “Adults can also reinforce the importance of oral health by their attitudes,” adds Dr. MontiMarkowski. “Encouraging good habits and showing a positive manner when visiting the dentist can lay the foundation for children to maintain healthy teeth throughout their lives.” StatePoint

manage conditions: Welldesigned health apps can help patients manage their conditions. For example, ArthritisPower, a free app for patients with arthritis, allows users to track symptoms and treatment outcomes, and share the information with their doctors. Created by CreakyJoints, a go-to resource for arthritis patients and their families, in collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the app is also a data-gathering tool for researchers. Via informed consent, user data is helping researchers better understand how different treatments work for different people. “One out of every five U.S. adults of all ages lives with doctor-diagnosed arthritis and it’s important that

patients actively engage in managing their own treatment plan,” says Seth Ginsberg, President and Co-Founder of CreakyJoints and Principal Investigator of ArthritisPower. To download the free app or learn more, visit arthritispower.org. 3. Video chat with loved ones: Talk and see grandkids and other far-flung friends and loved ones between visits with video chatting. It’s the perfect way to ensure you don’t miss important milestones. Many such video communications services are free, even internationally, and can present affordable alternatives to placing longdistance calls on a landline. Your smartphone is the world at your fingertips. Make great use of it. StatePoint

When Laws Collide - Child Safety Or Discrimination?

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Common interest development associations (aka “HOAs”) are governed by both state and federal Fair Housing laws. Fair Housing laws prohibit “familial status” discrimination, which means singling out children for any disparate treatment. [This prohibition exempts senior communities, which are exempted under Civil Code 51.2.] A complete ban on children would be a classic example of familial status discrimination. Another form of such discrimination would be imposing special restrictions upon children and not to adults. Most associations and their managers hopefully know that rules specifically targeting children are prohibited under Fair Housing laws. However,

in at least one context, state law appears to do just that single out children for special treatment. Associations which are not aware of a contradiction in current law could find themselves guilty of familial status discrimination regarding its swimming pools and spas. California law has for years required that apartments or HOA swimming pools have a posted sign stating: “Children under the age of 14 shall not use pool without a parent or adult guardian in attendance.” This requirement is currently found in the California Code of Regulations, Title 24 Chapter 31, Section 3120B.4. Another state regulation, Section 3120B.7, requires signs at spa pools reading, “Unsupervised use by children under the age of 14 is prohibited.” However, associations are not allowed to enforce these two statements. If an association adopts a

rule simply quoting the requirement of the two state law-mandated signs, banning unaccompanied kids from pools and spas, the association could be sued for violating Fair Housing laws. Several cases have been decided in federal courts in California over the years, finding that a restriction on unaccompanied children in pools violated Fair Housing laws. This creates a very difficult dilemma for common interest development associations. On the one hand, a board is apparently being encouraged to warn of a potentially dangerous situation in association pools and spas, but on the other hand if the association does anything more than simply post the sign, it violates Fair Housing laws. Conscientious boards often ask, what happens if a child drowns in our pool without an adult present, will

we be liable? It is difficult to balance the obvious safety issue against the equally valid concern about discrimination. Court opinions have noted that not all children under the age of 14 are unsafe in swimming pools, and banning blanket bans on unaccompanied children. However, at what age can most children generally validly be considered unsafe in a pool or spa? The state of California places this age at 13, based on the content of the aforementioned regulations. Many associations have other potentially hazardous amenities, such as gyms or weight rooms, saunas, and equestrian facilities, which can be very dangerous to a young and inexperienced or immature user. Is it reasonable that associations cannot try to protect children in such areas because of Fair Housing laws? When laws collide, the

and also help middle-class families put away money to send their kids to college. A recent Denver Post report found some 3,000 teaching slots are at risk of going unfilled in Colorado, in

offering a five-year tax credit if they teach in rural districts. “The point of having a five-year tax credit is it allows them to put some roots down in that area, and hopefully stay there for life and become a part of that community, and really make a difference teaching there,” she explained. Student teachers would get a one-time refundable tax credit of $2,500 for tuition costs, and after graduating would get an additional $15,000 in credits if they complete five years in rural districts. Mickelson adds the measure would end up paying for itself, and generate additional revenue, part because fewer because of a shift in how the teachers are graduating. state encourages families to save for college. Ali Mickelson, director of Colorado’s current tax and legislative policy for 529 College Savings Plan the Colorado Fiscal Institute, almost exclusively benefits says HB 1324 would help recruit and retain educators by families earning more than

losers may well be exactly the persons the law is trying to protect - the children. For specific steps to try to balance these conflicting policies, consult your association attorney, preferably someone very conversant in Fair Housing laws. As to swimming pools, unless and until the law changes, HOAs must post the required signs but cannot enforce what that signs say. Kelly G. New Bill Would Help Bring Teachers to Rural Schools

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – A new bill introduced in the Colorado House would give graduating teachers a financial incentive to teach in the state’s struggling rural districts,

$100,000 a year, people who already can afford to send their kids to college. Mickelson says increasing deductions for middleincome families, and lowering deductions for the state’s wealthiest, would give more Coloradans access to higher education. “And what’s really important about this bill is it reaches a group that we call the doughnut-hole group, who maybe make a little too much money to receive financial aid, but not enough money to afford the everincreasing cost of college every year,” she added. Taxpayers who earn less than $100,000 a year would get double what they put into the 529 savings plan in the form of a tax deduction. Top earners would get lower deductions as their income brackets rise.

Advocates Call for Clean Energy Ahead of Pruitt Visit

Advocates say Missouri is lagging behind other states when it comes to solar energy. (sierraclub.org)

where it’s not going to pollute over time, and then you’ve got the jobs creation side, so really every aspect of renewable energy has absolutely really no downside,” he said. “It’s just opportunity after opportunity.” Arthur says the fate of growth in renewable energy is in state lawmakers’ hands, adding net metering in Missouri and across the country is constantly under attack. He also cites House Bill 340, which would implement a tax on solar in Missouri. It was approved by the House and was scheduled to be heard in the Senate, but has been removed from the calendar. Janet Nuse is a retired pharmacist and a co-op member of Howard Electric. She has solar panels on her home, uses geothermal heat pumps and suffers from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She says Missouri lags behind

other states because about 80 percent of energy is still provided by gas and coal. “I think there hasn’t been any interest in Missouri,” she said. “I know some states are making leases available for solar installations on homes and I would like to see that be available more readily in Missouri too.” Nuse says she’s concerned that Pruitt, a climate-change denier, is now in charge of protecting air and water for Missourians. “It just seems so obvious to use the availability of the sun to provide energy instead of causing pollution through fossil fuels,” she added. By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. -- A proposal to change how Social Security is funded is being attacked as a sneaky way of undermining the program. The Trump administration is floating what’s been described as a trial balloon end the separate payroll taxes deducted for Social Security and replace them with general revenue or a consumption tax, similar to a sales tax. But Nancy Altman, president of the group Social Security Works, said those payroll deductions function like insurance premiums - you have to pay in to get benefits. She said stopping those would be the first step to cutting benefits. “Undermining the premiums, which are the dedicated revenue, which can only be used for Social Security - the dominant source of funding that’s been there since 1935 - it fundamentally alters the program,” Altman said.

Critics say Social Security is going bankrupt and has to be changed. The latest federal estimates say the program’s trust fund will run out in 2034. But Altman said the program would still pay out nearly 80 percent of current benefits with an empty trust fund. Since Social Security has its own dedicated source of funding, it adds nothing to the deficit. But Altman said ending the payroll taxes would leave Social Security benefits vulnerable to cuts as a way to reduce the deficit at some point in the future. “So I’ve actually called it a Trojan horse, because it looks like a gift, it looks like middle class tax relief, but really it’s undermining middle class economic security,” she said. During the campaign, President Trump said he wouldn’t cut Social Security benefits. But Altman said Trump has criticized the program in the past. And she said

the payroll tax structure has been a cornerstone of Social Security since it was founded. “Before he started running, he called Social Security an illegal, criminal Ponzi scheme,” Altman said. “I think it’s like

Trumpcare; if there is enough noise, they will see the writing on the wall and drop it.” About two-thirds of American seniors rely on Social Security for most or all of their income. Without the program,

economists estimate the poverty rate for seniors could multiply by three or four times. More information is available at SocialSecurityWorks.org.

By Desert Star Staff SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The last remaining offshore oil platform in California waters will now be decommissioned, after Venoco, the company that owns it, declared bankruptcy and handed the lease back to the state. Platform Holly off of Santa Barbara was shut down two years ago after a nearby pipe

owned by a different company burst, spilling 142,000 gallons of oil onto Refugio Beach. But Linda Krop, chief counsel with the Environmental Defense Center, says the company had been trying to expand its operations and was seeking permission to slant drill up to four miles from the platform, something her group has been fighting for decades.

“Platform Holly and the related pier that will also be decommissioned have been operating for more than 50 years,” she said. “You know, this is aging infrastructure that poses significant risks of air pollution, gas leaks and oil spills.” Venoco said in a statement that the ongoing closure of the pipeline it needs to

transport the oil led to the decision. The California State Lands Commission now will be charged with permanently plugging the wells. Krop says this is a turning point in oil drilling up and down the state because it sends a signal to the Trump administration, which reportedly is considering reopening a five-year plan that was finalized

near the end of President Obama’s time in office. “President Trump has expressed interest in opening up additional areas for leasing, and we’re very concerned that the California coast could be added to that plan,” she added. There has been no federal oil and gas leasing in waters off of California since 1984. However, a lot of oil and gas infrastructure remains, so stakeholders are waiting for word from the Department of the Interior on whether it will reverse Obama-era limits on offshore drilling.

Häagen-Dazs® Shops Celebrates a Buzz-worthy Free Cone Day By Desert Star Staff MINNEAPOLIS,- HäagenDazs® Shops are hosting their annual Free Cone Day on May 9, 2017. This year, it’s about more than free ice cream— the Häagen-Dazs brand is showing its ongoing commitment to helping the bees. Ice cream lovers are invited to visit participating Häagen-Dazs Shops in the United States between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 to receive one free scoop of ice cream or sorbet in a cup, sugar cone or cake cone. In return, the brand is asking guests to pay it forward by planting wildflowers native to their region to help keep bees buzzing. “Free Cone Day is our favorite day of the year because we can take time to thank our loyal fans. This year, we want to take it a step further and call attention to the bees who also support us year-round in a much different way,” said Adam Hanson, The HäagenDazs Shoppe Company, Inc. President and General Manager. “Without bees, many of our indulgent flavors would disappear from our shops, including Vanilla Swiss Almond, www.desertstarweekly.com

Strawberry and Rocky Road.” Bees are critical to the environment, supporting one in every three bites of food we eat, including ingredients that are used in more than one-third of Häagen-Dazs ice cream flavors. By working with its farmer suppliers, the Häagen-Dazs brand is helping to change the way ingredients are grown to better support bee populations. “Last year, we installed one of the world’s largest, privately funded pollinator habitats on the farm that supplies our almonds, one of our most popular ingredients. The habitat consists of six and a half miles of hedgerow and 11,000 native drought-tolerant shrubs and flowering plants, impacting 840 acres of farmland,” said Alex Placzek, Director of the Häagen-Dazs brand. “Those who stop by our shops on Free Cone Day can find out which of their favorite flavors rely on the bees and learn how to help – it’s as easy as planting a seed.” In order to supply what pollinators need, the HäagenDazs brand worked with expert agronomists and the Xerces Society to maximize

HOROSCOPES ARIES

You are developing a greater awareness of self as you continue to experience personal, political, inner/ outer change. New ideas and revelations appear, coloring your experiences. A sense that a fire burns within, like a heart wanting to give warmth to the world. You feel bright and brilliant. You are. You’re responsible for providing this fire and ideas to the world. Are you ready?

TAURUS Most likely you’re not going too many places these days. It’s possible your vehicle(s) is/ are experiencing breakdowns, battery failure, or flat tires so you can’t go too far. A state of contemplativeness has entered your life and all you can accomplish is gardening, slow walks, reflection and hiding from events, phones and people. You’re a leader whether this is acknowledged or not. You’re in preparation.

GEMINI Deeper revelations of divinity are occurring, possibly in sleep, but definitely while serving the world. Here are mantrams and intentions we recite each morning in meditation (which you’re welcome to join). “Assume a new and fresh attitude of community and hold it during the hours of service which lie ahead

each day. Guard with care all thoughts and speech. Call for those you will work with to help build the new culture and civilization.” There’s more. When you ask for them.

CANCER Slowly you are building a reputation and gaining achievements as you carefully re-enter the world. So often you’re hidden under a protective shell for safety and shelter. Often you’re working toward goals we don’t see or understand - not until they’re offered as nurturance and to serve others. You’re ambitious but no one can tell. You’re a leader. And you hide this, too.

LEO Restlessness often overtakes Leos. You need a change of environment, of scenery, perhaps a change in friendships. You also need to communicate what you’ve learned to those with curiosity and the ability to understand more expansive heart-centered ideas. In our daily morning meditations we thank our Teachers past, present and those to come. You are a teacher.

VIRGO You’re focused on the horizon with goal - oriented ideas as high as the mountaintop under which the coming May full moon festival takes

place. You’re proud of what you know. When using your knowledge with humility and Right Attitude, others learn from you. In turn you must want to learn, too. Your lower mind information must be turned into true knowledge. Your love into wisdom. Are you ready?

LIBRA There’s a sense you must enter deeper in life, including dying and regenerating like a phoenix in your most intimate relationships. Yours is the Path of the Warrior, going into battle with desires and aspiration, seeking the virtuous way, increasing the demand for change, compelling others to change also. For rebirth to occur, something from the past must be relinquished. It’s a hurt you hold. It can be let go now. Can you be ready?

SCORPIO As we grow older, our true self emerges. I remember my art teacher telling me, a young art student, “As we age we become more of our rising sign.” I didn’t understand her. But I do now. The inner essence of our rising sign shows us our Soul’s purpose and as we grow in age and experience, our Soul comes forth to direct our personality. This becomes our foundation. Is it time yet?

SAGITTARIUS

You’re proud of your family, heritage, religion, education. These constitute your private life. You are careful with your privacy. Only those you trust may enter. There are others in your life who wonder if you are trustworthy. Trust is something based on truth, ethics, understanding and knowing you will work for the good of both self and others, too. Are you ready to be identified as trustworthy?

CAPRICORN Be very careful with communication and thoughts. Communication can be difficult and misunderstandings occur - Neptune in Pisces in your house of communication. Begin each day with intentions to think and speak with a loving heart. This cultivates a joy that brings strength, courage, revelations and great creative ability. For gardening follow the biodynamic planting guide. Plant borage, bergamot and a fig tree.

resources and a deep need for nesting appears. Pray to the devas for what you need.

PISCES As a child, it was difficult to build or even understand solid secure foundations. As an adult, a secure foundation is most necessary. However, it’s difficult often for Pisces to build it. Begin by identifying what you value, what you love and need and what is beauty to you in terms of a home. Gradually over time, you have become the solid and secure foundation you always sought. Summon daily what you need. Make ready. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. AQUARIUS You feel restless perhaps. More than ready to make change in your home and the way you live and work. You sense a deep need for independence. This is how you must move about in your world. It’s important to be flexible, adaptable and to have mental agility allowing you to communicate clearly to everyone who comes your way. New values, a shift in

Californians Join Tax-Day Marches, Demand Release of Trump’s Returns

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – Big crowds of protesters are expected to take to the streets in a dozen California cities tomorrow, and in hundreds of sister marches across the nation. They’ll demand that President Donald Trump release his income-tax returns, as Americans prepare to file theirs

by the deadline on Tuesday. Before the election, thencandidate Trump promised to release the returns but then reneged, claiming voters don’t care that much about what’s in them. Delia Brown, co-organizer of the Los Angeles march, disagrees. She says the public deserves transparency

and accountability from the White House. “We think that there are conflicts of interest that would be exposed,” she said. “We know from his sons’ assertions that he has a lot of business dealings with Russia, but we have no way of knowing what they are or how deep they go.” More than 22,000 people

have registered to attend the L.A. event, which starts at 11 A.M. with a rally in Pershing Square and then a march to City Hall, accompanied by a 13-foot balloon likeness of a chicken with Mister Trump’s hairstyle, nicknamed “Chicken Don.” There’s more information online, at Tax March.org. Brown says at the marches, speakers will call for tax fairness, measures to fight income inequality, and a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, that allows corporations to contribute vast sums to political campaigns

without full disclosure. “What the people desire doesn’t stand a chance next to the big money that corporations have to push their agendas forward,” she added. “The American people’s voice is lost as soon as corporations are allowed to have great influence over who is elected, and what kinds of legislation is passed.” The marchers are also pressing for an investigation into whether President Trump continues to profit from income streams tied to foreign powers, which would be a violation of the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution.

’The Originalist’ - A Thought Provoking Political Comedy Drama at the Pasadena Playhouse

Pollte political discourse is almost impossible to achieve in the 21st century. The Republican and Democratic parties are constantly at loggerheads and divergent political ideals have often come between husbands and wives, family members and friends, sometimes to the point of no return. Ironically this was not the case with conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and the very liberal Ruth Bader Ginsburg who shared an extremely warm friendship, despite their opposing political viewpoints. According to playwright John Strand, author of “The Originalist” currently playing at the Pasadena Playhouse, “:America’s Founding Fathers crafted the United States Constitution in 1787. Even with its considerable flaws, it may well be, as the character Justice Scalia declares in the play, “the best thinking about law and justice in the past 300 years.” Originalists insist that the Founders’ text is the purest, most reliable source for a fair interpretation of the law as it is applied today. Go back to the original. “As simple as that.” Edward Gero, who plays the Chief Justice in the play, bears an uncanny resemblance to Scalia and he performs the role with great gusto and believability. If you are a liberal at heart you can’t help liking the guy, even if you disagree with him. This is what makes Strand’s play tick. Gero, an accomplished Italian-American actor from New Jersey, has been honored for the many varied roles he has played, ranging from artist Mark Rothko in “Red,” Salieri in “Amadeus” to Nixon and Sweeney Todd. But playing Scalia is especially gratifying.

In a recent interview he noted “There was joy inhabiting a man I had the opportunity to meet and call my friend. It was life altering to enjoy conversations with him and go skeet shooting with him and his clerks. He was a deeply spiritual man committed to something larger than himself. I’m proud to honor his legacy and through the play offer hope to Americans of all parties that democracy works. It’s a democracy so of course we disagree, but we don’t have to vilify each other in the process.” Beautiful musical moments from works by Mozart and Verdi are sprinkled throughout, acknowledging Scalia’s deep love for the opera, a love he shared with Justice Ruth Ginsburg. In fact as the play begins Gero sings as part of his opening monologue. Next we move on to Scalia’s office where a young and very liberal law school graduate named Cat (Jade Wheeler), has come to be interviewed for a law clerk position. During the course of their conversation she is extremely candid and combative. After the interview ends she starts to leave, certain she doesn’t stand the chance of a snowflake in hell of getting hired. To her great surprise Scalia tells her she has the job. It seems he enjoys sparring with others who don’t share his opinions. It’s invigorating and keeps him on his toes. While Cat finds it hard to believe she is Scalia’s new clerk, Brad (Brett Mack), another candidate for the position, is equally amazed. Unlike Cat, he is a strict conservative who worships Judge Scalia, During the course of their working relationship Cat and Scalia constantly argue their

opinions. At one point he takes her target shooting. It is obvious that he is skilled and she can’t shoot straight. It is also obvious that she believes in strict gun control. Their debate on the Second Amendment provides a fair hearing for both sides and shows us two people who clearly relish a rhetorical fight. As the play progresses,

despite their totally different perspectives on the law and its impact, they learn to respect and even like one another. Too bad this skill can’t be acquired by political adversaries in Washington. It is a skill that would bring the world a bit closer together, replacing hostility with respect and the ability to compromise when appropriate. This glimmer of

hope is what makes Strand’s play so thought provoking and enjoyable whether you are a liberal or a conservative or an “originalist.” “The Originalist,” at the Pasadena Playhouse, 39 South El Molino Ave., Pasadena, runs from April 11 through May 7. “The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer” Cedar: If I’m not mistaken, you worked with him on “Time Out of Mind.” Gere: That’s right. I was trying to write the script myself, but was having trouble finishing it. So, he ended up doing the rewrite and directed the film as well. Cedar: In some ways these events are about “Norman”- type occurrences. You bring new Academy members to meet people like you so that things will happen and you need someone in the middle who will make those introductions – whether they take seven percent or not is another question. (Laughter) But, those connections result in movies.

The iconic “Pretty Woman” starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts Richard Gere is one of America’s acting treasures. He has an uncanny knack for selecting scripts with the most interesting characters. Included in some of his vast body of films are, “Looking for Mr. Goodbar,” “Days of Heaven,” “American Gigolo, “An Officer and a Gentleman,” “The Cotton Club,” “Internal Affairs,” “Pretty Woman,” “Intersection,” “Primal Fear,” to “The Jackal,” “Runaway Bride,” “The Mothman Prophecies,” “Unfaithful,” “Chicago,” “Nights in Rodanthe,” and “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” Gere is divorced from his second wife Casey Lowell with whom he has one son, Homer James Jigme Gere. (CUT) The family lives in New York. Joseph Cedar, writer and director of the critically acclaimed “The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer,” was born in New York City but when he was five, his family moved to Israel where he was raised. He is an Orthodox Jew, served in the Army, and attended the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Later, he enrolled in the Cinema Studies program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He is Israel’s most celebrated, award-winning director and writer and is best known for “Footnote,” which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language film and “Beaufort,” which won a Silver Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and Israel’s Ophir Award for Best Director and Best Screenplay. He is married to Vered Kelner and lives in Israel. Gere and Cedar recently sat down with a select group of journalists to discuss their film, and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes. Is this hotel a little familiar?

Did you have Richard in mind while you were writing the script? Gere: Absolutely! (Laughter) Cedar: I had Richard in mind since I can remember. (Laughter)

You have been extraordinarily successful in your career, always choosing fabulous scripts with a very interesting cross section of characters. What attracted you to this script and to the character of Norman in particular? Gere: Just as a piece of writing, it was brilliant. It’s goofy. It’s smart. It’s political. It’s personal. It’s generous. It has a thriller aspect to it. It has all those elements. As far as Norman, it was certainly a character I didn’t know, nor did I ever play it before.

Many of us have not come across the narrative of What inspired you to write the Court Jew. Could this brilliant script? you kindly explain that? Cedar: I think I know Gere: I wasn’t familiar with many Normans and I think it either. We started talking I’ve behaved like Norman a about it in our first meetings. few times. There’s another it’s helpful to you and you need aspect that I think is extremely it. That’s a small dilemma that interesting. I think all of I felt because I can’t solve it modern progress is the result for myself – this combination of feeling gratitude towards someone who offered me something that I can’t refuse. The gratitude is real, but then I’m having a hard time because I don’t really understand why he made me need him. These are complicated things that the film helped me unravel.

You live in New York so was there one particular Norman on which you based your character? Gere: Although I’ve known “Normans,” I didn’t know this particular Norman. But living in New York, and being in show business, “Normans” have crossed my path and I assume your world as well (journalism.) There are “Normans” on the edge of powerful or financially extraordinary people and there those who want to get into those rarified worlds. For example, “Normans” can help you gain access to someone or something you need; an upgrade in a room, a better car, or he can get you a

Did you have to pursue Richard to do the role? Gere: No, he didn’t have to. The synchronicity of how we met was kind of extraordinary. It was through a mutual friend Oren Moverman and it was at an event for new Academy members. My agent said they would really love you attend so the new members can meet you. Cedar: Both Oren and I were new members that year and that’s why we were there. Gere: Oren and I had not see each other in a while. of some Court Jew, at least in Europe. If you look at the great European monuments, none of them would have been possible without that relationship between a king, a duke, a prince, or someone in power, and a Jew who was able to provide the financing that was needed. Rulers needed that function in order to do things that in retrospect we are enjoying right now such as art, culture, architecture, and bridges. It’s a combination of things that are objectively good together, with others that are questionable such as armies and taxes, which the Court Jews thought were good but was seen as something bad by the people who had to pay them. However, 500 years later those taxes created beautiful cities. Was there anything specific that you wanted to illuminate through the Norman theme in your script? Cedar: I can only say that it was something that I was very attracted to in a very sincere way. It was not that I was looking for this tale. Gere: Was it that the Court Jew would be the one to be sacrificed in the end – the easiest one to let go? Cedar: I think that’s what makes this tale, this journey, this narrative so compelling. It’s kind of a cliffhanger because we don’t know what Norman is going to do in the end? Gere: If you look at what Continues on Page 14

Desert X. Photo by Anthony Grant

By Pamela Price April was an “X”tra special month for art collectors in the desert from being the last chance month discovering Desert X site specific installations, to captures a posse of artists at Colin Fisher Studios in Cathedral City with this collector’s Collective Possibilities open through April 22. This last exhibit of the season features Christopher Shoemaker (aka “Crystofer”) and Tina Bluefield. Crystofer’s enigmatic painting, “Transition” was a “ classic example of his

abstract figurative art,” said Timmy Woods, international handbag designer. The artist’s family visiting from Las Vegas shared a few stories about their talented son who has an impressive following in the desert’s art community. Speaking of following artists around the Desert, art fans of all ages have been scouring the Valley from Whitewater to Coachella on an art-inspired treasure hunt. The key is to abide by the guidelines, which brought us to the juncture where the

San Jacinto mountain range meets the Coachella Valley. If you arrive between 3:30pm and 7 pm as we did, you can see artist Doug Aitken’s Mirage, a literally reflective ranch house elevated from it’ rugged mountainous setting, nestled in view of whirling windmills. This architectural ranchstyle installation is a spin on a suburban American home; however, it is anything but traditional. With no docent on duty, it falls upon visitors to interpret this mirror image blending the surrounding

geography with the artist’s intent, “to form a life-size Kaleidoscope that absorbs and reflects the landscape.” Oppositional forces allow viewers to “shift and transform in the ever-changing desert landscape.” View at 1111 West Racquet Club Rd., details at desertx.org/visit. Meanwhile back in Cathedral City, where their seven appointed Art Commissioners agree on one thing, this is the city “Where Art Lives.” Making good on that, Cathedral City celebrated the

installation of their donated works of art at a reception held on April 18, at their Civic Center. Works included impressive sculpture by Scott Donadio donated by Colin Fisher Studios, a rededication of the sculpture Friends of the Heart donated by Dr. Hermann Heiman, and photographs now exhibited permanently in City Hall, donated by Simeon Den and Peter Palladino.

New Trump order to crack down on work visas for foreigners US President Donald Trump is to sign an executive order to revamp the visa program for foreign workers. According to the White House, the order is aimed at curbing fraud and abuse in the immigration system and protecting US workers. Trump will sign an executive order pushing his ‘Buy American and Hire American’ approach during a trip to Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, according to a White House official. The order will reform the H-1B visa system, used by companies to hire foreigners to fill positions requiring specialist knowledge. “This executive order will call for the strict enforcement of all laws governing entry into the United States of labor from abroad for the stated purpose of creating higher wages and higher employment rates for workers in the United States,” a senior administrative official told reporters. The move aims to “crack down on fraud and abuse” and help American workers, especially in the tech sphere, who are often replaced by foreigners on lower wages. The official also pointed out that “groups that represent workers have begged for reforms” for a long time but “they’ve been ignored by, frankly, the political system.” Tens of thousands who apply for H-1B visas each year are hired by IT companies. According to the White House official speaking at a briefing, “80 percent of H-1B

workers are paid less than the median wage in their fields,” so companies are reportedly able to abuse the program to hire cheaper labor and replace American workers. “The result is that workers are often brought in well below market rates to replace American workers, violating the principle of the program, which is supposed to be a means for bringing in skilled labor. Instead, you’re a lot of times bringing in workers that are less skilled and lower paid than the workers they’re replacing,” the official said. The coming reforms are designed to stop this practice and ensure that the program will bring in “the most skilled or highest-paid applicants,” the official added.Instead of a random lottery, which is part of the current procedure of granting H-1B guest worker visas, the program will become more merit-based. Under the existing rules, 65,000 visas are available, although the number of applicants is usually twothree times this. United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) received 199,000 H-1B petitions during the four-day application period this year, from April 3 to April 7. Due to the huge demand and in order to meet the 65,000 cap, USCIS uses a so-called lottery system, when a computer randomly selects people who will be awarded visas. Applicants with a master’s degree take part in the second ‘round’ of 20,000

And so it’s a very elegant of way of solving very systemic problems in the H1B guest worker visa.”In one recent case of alleged discrimination against American workers, former Walt

Disney IT employees sued the company, accusing it of violating the law by replacing them with cheaper immigrant labor. Although the case was thrown out by the court, the order will make “that kind of displacement impossible” through not only legislative but also administrative regulations, the White House said. The rules for H-1B applicants were already toughened recently. Earlier in April, USCIS issued a memo stating that a tech specialist’s bachelor’s degree must be “relevant to a specialty occupation adjudication” – effectively meaning that not only a degree itself was necessary, but also that it must be in a relevant area. Through its “more targeted

approach,” USCIS has also decided to make random and unannounced “targeted site visits” to companies recruiting H-1B employees, in a bid to “focus resources where fraud and abuse of the H-1B program may be more likely to occur.” The move is one more step in President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. In January, the US president issued a travel ban on people from seven mainly-Muslim countries, sparking massive protests and condemnation both at home and abroad. Trump has also cracked down on migrants from neighboring Mexico, promising to construct a wall between the two countries.

& Arts Festival -- and Bradley Cooper, who will also direct. A photograph of the pair released Monday depicts them performing on stage at what appears to be a country music concert. Messages sent to Coachella festivalgoers through the official Coachella app invited them to show up at the Empire Polo Grounds Tuesday and Wednesday. They were instructed to dress in country music attire

to be part of the ``audience’’ during the filmed concert. The latest iteration of ``A Star is Born’’ has Cooper portraying Jackson Maine, ``a country music star who is on the brink of decline when he discovers a talented unknown named Ally,’’ according to Warner Bros. ``As the two begin a passionate love affair, Jack coaxes Ally into the spotlight, catapulting her to stardom. But as Ally’s career quickly

eclipses his own, Jack finds it increasingly hard to handle his fading glory,’’ according to the studio’s synopsis of the plot. The movie, which also stars Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Elliott, marks Cooper’s directorial debut. Gaga, who is filming in between her weekend sets at the Coachella festival, also wrote original songs for the movie, which is currently slated for release on Sept. 28, 2018. Source: KMIR

MUSIC By the Numbers: Coachella 2, Big Star’s Third, Record Store Day 10 BY ROBERT KINSLER

guitar lines. And who knew how cool it would be that composer Hans Zimmer was such a cool act to add to the Coachella mix, performing concert-ready versions of some of his best movie music? His gigantic group of star musicians (including a full orchestra and guest turn from Pharrell Williams) was surely one of the fun surprises of the weekend. I look forward to immersing myself in as much music as possible this weekend at the Empire Polo Club. Information: Coachella.com. While Coachella will provide the perfect live setting to take in music, fans looking to take in some great music via their home theater system or while on a drive can pick up the newly-released “Thank You, Friends: Big Star’s Third Live...And More” coming April 21, 2017 courtesy of Concord Bicycle Music. While you may not have yet heard of this concert film, make sure to track down the DVD/2 CD title filmed and recorded at a starstudded show in Glendale, CA a year ago. The concert serves as both a celebration (for those who know cult heroes Big Star), and those who may not yet be familiar with the Memphis-spawned early ‘70s rockers. The line-up of artists who perform songs from Big Star’s discography include Jody

Stephens (the only surviving member of Big Star), Chris Stamey (The dB’s), Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Jeff Tweedy and Pat Sansone (both of Wilco), Robyn Hitchcock, Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers) and many more. The film and performances are truly special. A shining version of “September Gurls” (featuring Mills on lead vocals), tender “Thirteen” (with Skylar Gudasz) and a flat-out rocking “When My Baby’s Beside Me” featuring most of the ensemble are among the fantastic versions on the must-own collection (directed by Benno Nelson). know if the shoes and suit were mine or not. (Laughter) It was hanging in my closet. I had no other reason to wear a tuxedo, but the shoes, I wanted. I had this conversation with my wife discussing what I should do. I ended up calling the store and asked if they wanted everything back. They said yes and that they were sending a messenger over right away. In those few hours, I put the shoes on and when the messenger arrived, I found I was really sad to say goodbye to them. I would have loved to own a $2,000 pair of shoes. I don’t think they expected that call so I felt stupid doing it. Somehow those shoes echoed in my head and ended up in the script. Gere: Just to pick up on that. That’s the key moment in the movie. But then in rehearsal we pushed it further. It wasn’t just buying him the shoes. I felt it was necessary to put the shoes

on him. That wasn’t initially in the script, but I’m looking at it from the commitment from my character’s point of view, but Joseph is seeing it more from a narrative point of view. I had to put the shoes on the Israeli Deputy Prime Minister’s feet myself and that’s what cements the future relationship.

Record Store Day arrives April 22, and several Coachella Valley-based independent stores are participating. Record Alley (located in the Westfield Mall in Palm Desert) and Palm Springs Vinyl Records and Collectibles will join countless brick and mortor indie record stores across the U.S. to celebrate the important event where special limited-edition releases from the likes of The Beatles, David Bowie, Rush, Elton John, the Cars and Fleetwood Mac are offered for one day only. was achieved for everyone, you can see that he found a way, kind of brilliantly, where everyone got what they wanted, including himself. He was essential. Do you find that you are attracted to characters who are flawed? Gere: Of course. The story of someone who is born a saint is really boring, but someone who was born to ordinary parents and then becomes Jesus Christ, that’s a much more interesting story. How would you describe your Norman? Gere: I think there is a kind of purity. I haven’t found the right words to express what I’m feeling. I call him a holy idiot sometimes. Because of how he has controlled his emotions, there’s a kind of a mystical purity about him.

Joseph keeps reminding me that Norman wants his seven percent for sure, but there is something about him, like Charlie Chaplin’s “Tramp,” that is extremely pure in these kinds of characters. Is there a specific reason why you chose shoes as the thing that Norman would give to the character of the Deputy Prime Minister of Israel? Cedar: My sincere answer to that is if I’m aware of any kind of symbolism, then I walk away from it. After the movie is made, then maybe I can look back and question why he buys him the shoes. The way it evolved was that I was once given a suit and a pair of shoes for an Oscar ceremony by a designer with whom we ended up collaborating. After the ceremony was over, I didn’t know if the shoes and suit were mine or not. (Laughter) It was hanging in my closet. After the ceremony was over, I didn’t

April 19, 2017

How challenging was it for you to illuminate the different aspects of your complicated character? Gere: Not so hard because he believes everything he says and does. When he’s lying he believes it. When he’s telling the truth he believes it. As soon as he makes something happens, he knows that he has to fix it. If someone confronts him, he makes up a story, but whatever the story is, once he starts it, his fantasy life is so vivid that he totally believes what he’s saying.

Norman could have been an unlikeable character, but I found myself rooting for him. Gere: That’s the Charlie Chaplin part. In the end, he’s sweet. He’s not going to deliberately hurt anyone. There’s not a mean bone in his body. When he’s confronted by Steve Buscemi as Rabbi Blumental who asks him, ‘Why did you do this?’ I say ‘I don’t know.’ The fact was I was sorry. I didn’t intend to hurt anybody. This is the truth of where he’s coming from. None of his lies are meant to hurt anybody and he thinks all his schemes will come true. If everyone does what they’re suppose to do, everything is going to be fine. (Laughter) And everything does turn out fine. Best of luck with this film and with your other film “The Dinner,” which I’ll be seeing next week.

By KMIR News Staff Indio, CA -The first of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival’s two weekends wrapped up this weekend and thousands of attendees began the trek home. About 30,000 campers remained in lots early this morning, said Indio police Sgt. Dan Marshall. They have to leave by 10 a.m., according to the Coachella festival website. Rapper and Compton native Kendrick Lamar was the final act of the weekend to take the main stage. It was his second Coachella appearance after performing on the 2012 main stage and appearing as a guest for headliners Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Other notable Sunday performances included pop star Lorde, whose Coachella performance marked a return from a nearly threeyear hiatus from the music scene, and movie composer Hans Zimmer who led

French rap duo PNL were dropped from Sunday’s lineup because one member, Tarik Andrieu, was not able to get a visa in time to make the performance, according to media reports.``After several months of administrative steps, one of the two of us still hasn’t been allowed to return to the United States for reasons that you can imagine,’’ a message on the group’s Facebook said. ``Hoping to have some good news from here the next weekend.’’ On Saturday, six-time Grammy winner Lady Gaga performed as a replacement for Beyonce, who is pregnant with twins and gave up her headlining spot on doctor’s orders, with promises to appear next year. By Desert Star Staff Pennsylvania State Police have confirmed that an Ohio man who was suspected of murdering a man on Facebook Live killed himself after a “brief pursuit” from police. In a message posted on Facebook on Tuesday, police confirmed that Steve Stephens had died by suicide after a chase in Erie County, Pennsylvania.Stephens, 37, was named on the FBI’s Most Wanted list for fatally shooting 74-year-old Robert Godwin, Sr. on Sunday in Cleveland, Ohio. Stephens approached Godwin Sr. in the Glenville neighborhood and fatally shot the 74-year-old in the head after telling him to say “Joy Lane,” the name of

Stephens’ ex-girlfriend. The case sparked interest around the world and a $50,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. A nationwide manhunt was launched and Stephens’ ex-girlfriend was placed in protective custody.Speaking at a press conference following confirmation of Stephens’ death, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said that “there was a short pursuit in which the vehicle was stopped,” and “as officers approached the vehicle, he took his own life.” Until the investigation is complete, Williams said, “we won’t actually know where he was and what he was doing.” “The troopers attempted a PIT [precision immobilization technique] maneuver to disable Stephens’ vehicle, a white Ford Fusion,” Pennsylvania State Police explained. “As the vehicle was spinning out of control from the PIT maneuver,

The duo’s performance included ``Jumpman,’’ one of their many collaborations. One person was arrested Friday at the festival grounds for allegedly stealing over 100 phones from attendees.

No other major arrests or disturbances were reported as of early Sunday evening. Police planned to release the number and nature of weekend arrests and citations later today, Marshall said. The crowds return to the Polo Grounds starting Thursday for the second weekend featuring the same artists. Campers can begin arriving at 9

An estimated 125,000 people are expected at the festival each day, which would make this year’s event the best-attended Coachella festival in history, thanks to the Indio City Council’s unanimous decision to expand the festival’s attendance cap from 99,000 to 125,000. Stephens pulled a pistol and shot himself in the head.” Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf thanked police for their actions during the pursuit and said that no one else had been hurt. Stephens’ became known as the “Facebook Live Killer” after Cleveland Police said the murder had been recorded on Facebook Live. Facebook has since clarified that the video was not streamed live, but was pre-recorded. Stephens subsequently went on a Facebook Live rant where he claimed to have killed a dozen other people, however Cleveland police said they have found no evidence to back up those claims. The manhunt ended approximately 100 miles away from where Stephens shot Godwin, Sr. Godwin’s daughter, Brenda Haymon, told CNN she learned of Stephens’ death as she was planning

her father’s funeral. “All I can say is that I wish he had gone down in a hail of one hundred

PA Senate Committee to Vote on Guns in Schools

By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – On Wednesday the state Senate’s education committee is set to vote on a bill to allow school personnel to carry loaded weapons in public schools. Senate Bill 383 is labeled as “providing for protection and defense of students.” It would empower school districts to establish a policy to allow personnel who have a concealedcarry permit and training to have access to firearms in public school buildings. Susan Spicka, executive director of Education Voters of Pennsylvania, says they looked for evidence that arming school personnel increases student safety, and found none. “The National School Safety Security Services advises against it,” she said. “Every state study that has been done about school safety has not recommended it.” Republican State Sen. Donald White, the sponsor of the bill, says it would provide another option to improve the

But according to Spicka, there has been at least one experience in Pennsylvania that shows bringing guns into school can increase risk. “In Chambersburg, Pa., a teacher at a Christian school who took off her loaded gun left it on the back of a toilet in

a bathroom that she shared with students and four students went into the bathroom that day,” she explained. Spicka notes that there have been no public hearings on SB 383, which was introduced in February. With the state facing a $3 billion budget deficit, Spicka believes there are real threats

to public education that need immediate attention. “Making sure that we don’t have to go through another round of cuts, making sure that our kids can get a quality education,” she added. “That is what the Senate Education Committee should be focusing on, not trying to find a way to get guns in public schools.”

Weed Bus Parked At Valley School Upsets Community

KMIR Tyler Harrison, Producer Bermuda Dunes, CA - One logo is sounding off alarms for some community members at James Monroe Elementary School. “I stopped by and asked what it is about, it is for Weed Map,” said Vonda McFadden, a Bermuda Dunes resident. Weed Maps, a legal online community of medical dispensaries, deliveries and doctors, has set up a shuttle location in the school parking lot. “For the convenience of what they’re trying to accomplish, I understand what they’re trying to do by eliminating traffic,” said McFadden. This is troubling to one James Monroe parent, who wishes to remain anonymous, writing to KMIR News, in part: “I had always believed that the school district actively supported the idea of a drug free environment and lifestyle.” We contacted the Desert

The school parking lot is used each year to transport guest to private parties during the festival. “No crazy driving; everyone has been pretty low key about it. There’s been a little bit of trash but someone seems to be picking it up in the mornings. What the parties are representing, and what is at the school and all of that, I think you have come to your own conclusion,” said McFadden. Source: KMIR

Advice Columnist Ann Landers Shares Her Letters And Wisdom

‘Gloria Loring’ By Jack Lyons, Theatre and Film Critic When one has 60 million readers and followers across the globe freely sharing their personal feelings and secrets in public with Ann Landers, the famous advice columnist of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, one has to have a great deal of trust in the gatekeeper of that information. Coyote StageWorks, one of the desert’s premiere Equity Theatres, presents the final production of its 2017 season with the smart, funny, and engaging comedy “The Lady With All the Answers” now on stage at the Annenberg Theatre in Palm Springs. The multi-talented actor/writer/ singer and philanthropist Gloria Loring stars as Ann Landers in this one-woman show creatively written by television writer and producer David Rambo; and once again, is staged by Coyote StageWorks award-winning director Don Amendolia. “Ann Landers” was the pen name of Eppie Lederer,

who wrote an advice column for one of Chicago’s leading newspapers. Ironically, her twin sister Pauline Lederer, wrote her advice column “Dear Abby” for the Chicago Herald American newspaper. The sisters were close but when it came to their columns, each were tigress’ defending their turf. Coyote’s co-founding artistic director and actor Chuck Yates, has the golden touch when it comes to selecting a season of plays. There have been so many memorable productions over the last eight years from this highly talented organization who perform, musicals, (“The Andrews Brothers”), comedies, (“Art” and “Boeing- Boeing”), solo tribute biographies (“Tru”), and dramas (“Agnes of God”), are among my personal favorites, all garnering Desert Theatre League Awards in the bargain. There is always the risk of not meeting the expectations of the audience or failing to engage the audience when

the production is a solo effort. Plays that have repetitive dialogue hooks tend to fall into “and then I wrote, or then I played” category, allowing the audience to drift away from the playwright and the performer’s main thrust of telling a compelling story in a fresh and enjoyable way. Fortunately, this issue is a non-issue at the Annenberg Theatre. “The Lady With All the Answers,” has plenty of interesting mini-stories to tell, thanks to Ann Landers’ forty some years of corresponding with her millions of readers dispensing witty and insightful gems of wisdom when answering those letters. The beauty and enjoyment of this production boils down to the clever crafting of how to make those reader’s letters come theatrically alive and connect with everyday situations that people all over the world recognize. Playwright Rambo is a seasoned television writer and producer who knows how to reach an audience. His “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” television series has been a staple on CBSTV for several seasons. I had the opportunity to chat briefly with him after the

production can survive without the specialized talents of the creative people who add magic touches to the necessary technical components that transfer a production into a total winning theatrical experience. The set designed by Josh Clarbaugh, and the lights and sound designed by Moira Wilke, lend comfort and warmth to the Lake Shore Drive apartment in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood where Eppie works at night. The costume designs of Bonnie Nipar light up the stage, especially the RubyRed peignoir in Act II. Ms. Loring seemingly glides, as if on air, when she crosses the stage. Quite an effect. The Wig designed by James Gier, from certain angles in the audience, gives Ms. Loring a young, raven-haired, California Senator Dianne Finestein-look. And keeping this excellent production on its toes from a backstage perspective is stage manager Blanche K. Mickelson. “The Lady with all the Answers” is a splendid production that performs at the Annenberg Theatre, Palm Springs, and runs through to Sunday, April 23, 2017. Don’t Miss It !

opening-night performance. When I asked him how long the research process took to curate and reduce her columns into a professional play format he replied, “it was just about a year,” adding, “how much he enjoyed the wonderful cooperation from Margo Howard, Eppie’s daughter who took over the column after her mother died in 2002. “The Lady with all the Answers,” has been produced by more than 200 theatrical companies to date. The success of the play is definitely a case of ‘inquiring minds want to know’. The Coyote StageWorks production is fortunate to have Gloria Loring, one America’s iconic actors in the title role. She is known to millions via her 600 episodes of “Days of Our Lives” daytime television show. Ms. Loring brings a fresh, snappy, and a delightful interpretation of Ann Landers in her heyday. Director Amendolia, is right at home helming “Lady” despite it’s being a solo comedy turn. This is the director, remember, who brilliantly guided the powerful drama “Agnes of God” to a Desert Theatre League Desert Star Award in 2016. No first-rate theatre
