Coachella Week Two

The madness continues Coachella Music Festival week two By Robert Kinsler Weekend 2 at Coachella (April 18-20) didn’t kick off quietly on Friday morning, at least in the Gobi tent where Ramones tribute outfit Gabba Gabba Heys tore through 40 minutes of oldschool punk rock in front of a small, but enthusiastic group of early Coachellagoers. Highlights included the quartet’s faithful versions of “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “I Wanna Be Sedated” and “Beat on the Brat.”

Following up on the same stage came dynamic sonic duo Wye Oak, whose magical appearance included singer/ multi-instrumentalist Jenn Wasner and drummer-keyboardist Andy Stack creating enough textures and dynamics to rival just about any indie folk-rock outfit today. The pair featured several songs from their forthcoming album “Shriek” including that disc’s title cut, a dreamy synth-pop gem

By Kevin Powell Not quite so fast. I’ve written a couple of times previously about the massive and unprecedented bankruptcy GM received in 2009. Then “We the People” give GM billions in bailout dollars that will never be repaid in full even though the company continues to earn big profits in every year since filing Chapter 11. And now, based on court papers filed in the bankruptcy court, GM is hoping for a third and possibly even larger handout. T h e y a re a s k i n g a bankruptcy judge to dismiss all liability claims from anything that occurred before their June

1, 2009 bankruptcy or from the “Old GM.” Unfortunately they could win t his argument thanks to the generous terms that were added to their filing. Normally bankruptcy does not protect a corporation from liability issues. It’s primarily a financial reorganization. However, in this case, the federal government added special provisions that could give GM protection from previous bad acts. Even biased GM supporters can’t deny that the stink is quickly morphing into a stench. So far GM has recalled roughly 3 million automobiles with ignition problems that have been linked to 13 deaths and

highlighting Wasner’s distinctive soprano. Other musical highlights that played out on the first day of Weekend 2 included ZZ Ward who brought her infectious blend of R&B, pop, blues and rock in a Mojave tent performance that got the place moving like it was Saturday night. People cheered, moved and clapped to the mix of the Pennsylvania artist’s high-energy style that had her singing, playing blues harmonica

many more accidents spanning a decade. There have been more than 6.3 million vehicles recalled in 2014 for various reasons. A Texas court last week refused to order even more recalls and force GM to advise drivers to park affected models because of the risk. GM obviously welcomed the ruling but added warnings to drivers about having extra weight on key rings. Their website even warns drivers that ignition switches could malfunction from rough road conditions. Seriously? Part of the “New GM’s” PR campaign is that they are Continues on Page 2

or strumming her guitar; Ward’s material was definitely what the crowd ordered. Early offerings (“Put the Gun Down,” “Til the Casket Drops”) and later favorites (especially the closer “Blue Eyes Blind”) were delivered forcefully by Ward and her strong three-man band. Other day 1 standout performances came subsequently that day via Neko Case’s authentic and winning 50-minute set on the Outdoor stage (highlighted by a stunning

version of “Night Still Comes”) and even stronger subsequent turn from Broken Bells and The Replacements. Broken Bells’ infectious “After the Disco” and set-ending “High Road” really hit home with a crowd that packed in front of the James Mercer- and Danger Mouse-led troupe. Day 2 kicked off with British soul singer Laura Mvula, who made the most of her early Continues on Page 10

suddenly going to be a consumer centric company and it won’t be business as usual in Detroit. Yet recent papers have shown that the company may have known about the problems long before the recalls were issued. A requirement of the bankruptcy process is that a debtor must fully disclose any such issues. So GM may ultimately have to step up to the plate and finally do the right thing. Wouldn’t it be nice if they

association refuses, Section 5235 permits you to ask a Small Claims Court Judge for help. Going to court rarely truly solves the problem, because most of the time the problem is that the board (or homeowner) simply does not know what they are supposed to do. So give the board a copy of the statutes mentioned here, or this column

– allow them the chance to know and do the correct thing. If there truly is a confidentiality clause in the contract, your association’s attorney may require you to sign a confidentiality agreement in which you promise not to share the contract or its contents. However, 99% of the time, contracts are not at all legally privileged, and boards should not be reluctant to allow members to review them. Thanks, Kelly Hello Kelly, We have a 5 member Board. Although we had a quorum (4 were present including me) at a recent Board Meeting, a director who was not present said he would be available by phone if his vote was required on any issue. This Board Meeting included on the agenda electing Officers for the year. There was a tied vote for President. Our Management Agent called this director on the speaker phone who then made the deciding vote. He did not have his telephone on during the entire meeting. Is this allowed by any code? Our CC&R and By-laws only address written proxy to cast a vote if a director is not able to attend meetings. There is nothing in the by-laws about directors’ “presence by telephone”. Thank you for your column.

L.H., Wildomar. Dear. L.H.: A board may allow a director to participate by telephone, but only under specific circumstances. Civil Code 4925(a), part of the “Open Meeting Act”, allows a director to participate in a board meeting telephonically so long as all the people in the room (audience included) can hear the director, and the director can also hear the people in the room. Associations are not required to allow phone participation. Using cell phones as a speakerphone can often be frustrating for all concerned, so if your board intends to allow directors to call in, invest a few dollars in a speakerphone that will allow the members to hear the caller. The fact the director only called in for a part of the meeting is OK, just as if the director stepped into the meeting and then had to step out again. Thanks for your question, Kelly

HOA Homefront – Reader Questions By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: I understand from reading my local newspaper that you specialize in answering HOA questions. I hope you can entertain mine. My HOA signed a new contract. I asked to read it and the HOA responded that it had a confidential clause in it and they couldn’t let me see it. Two questions: Isn’t it illegal keep contracts secret from HOA members? What is my remedy? Thanks in advance for your help. D.A., Indio Dear D.A.: Contracts are generally something that association members have a right to see. Civil Code Section 5200(a)(4) states that “executed contracts not otherwise privileged under law” are “association records” which under Section 5205 are to be available for inspection or copying by members. Under Section 5210, if the contract was executed during the current fiscal year, it is to be made available within ten business days. If the

“An Evening With George Washington” By desert Star Staff Groves Cabin Theatre in Morongo Valley takes great pride in presenting Mr. Frederick T. Alexander performing “An Evening with George Washington” on three weekends in May. Mr. Alexander, an avid student of American history, began appearing as George Washington twenty years ago, and has since performed at countless venues and events as our nation’s first president, including television appearances on the Ellen DeGeneres show and in “Presidential Prophecies” and “An American Thanksgiving” on The History Channel. His uniform is authentic, and his knowledge of Washington’s life, the 18th Century, and particularly the Revolutionary War and the birth of our nation, is extensive. His performances are filled with little-known facts, insights into the times, and tidbits of personal information, such as that Washington was considered the best dancer in

Virginia. His delivery is genuine, moving, and humorous as he evokes the spirit of George Washington in a true labor of love. “An Evening with George Washington” will be performed on Saturday evenings at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. May 3 & 4, 17 & 18, and 24 & 25; note that there are no performances on Mothers’ Day Weekend (10 & 11). Each of the three weekends of “An Evening with George Washington” will have a distinct theme, so one could attend all three weekends and see three completely distinctive shows. Weekend 1 (May 3 & 4): Covers the Declaration of Independence and George Washington’s triumphant entrance into New York reclaiming New York from the British. Weekend 2 (May 17 & 18): Covers the Constitution; how it developed and by whom, the real intentions of its creators, and how it has been

eroded over time. Weekend 3 (May 24 & 25): Recognizes the fallen heroes of the Revolution; the 25,000 men, women, and children who gave their lives for our liberty and freedom. This is a perfect lead-in to Memorial Day. Groves Cabin Theatre has won numerous Desert Theatre League awards for its high quality productions. The tiny 22-seat theater offers one of the most intimate theatrical experiences in the world— that experience having been described as, “like being a fly on the wall, witnessing real life happening before my eyes.” The limited seating means early reservations are a must. Groves Cabin Theatre is located at 8768 Desert Willow Trail in Morongo Valley north of Highway 62 (look for the large red, white, and blue stone on the north side of the highway). Tickets for all seats are $12. For reservation’s call: 760-3654523; www.grovescabintheatre. org.

T h e f e d e r a l government had established only five national parks, one wildlife preserve, and was without a Park Service. While they didn’t always agree, Muir and Roosevelt shared an affinity for safeguarding the country’s wildlands. By the end of Roosevelt’s presidency, America claimed an additional 200 million acres of forest wilderness, five more national parks, several new monuments (including the Grand Canyon), and 65 wildlife preserves. Train Your Brain For Personal Power By Art Kunkin Mr. Life Extension Here is a brain training procedure you can use to energize yourself and accomplish all of your goals. This procedure is called HAMR, Hand Activated Mental Reconditioning. HAMR is one of the tools I will be teaching in the daily email program at my new website, www.Life ExtensionFreePress.com Our brain contains a number of electrical and chemical circuits. There are circuits in the various parts of the brain (called lobes) devoted to hearing, seeing, touching, old memories, new planning, etc. When our senses are receiving and processing information, there is such increased electrical activity in the particular activated lobe of the brain that it actually produces light. In fact, a brain lobe that is “lit up” has such excess electricity and chemical activity that a nearby lobe will often “light up” as a consequence. A person experiencing such increased brain activity feels very alive, full of energy, filled with the confidence to start and successfully complete any project. HAMR is a procedure for deliberately and consciously “lighting up” the major lobes of your brain so that your self esteem, your sense of

your own capability, is increased. HAMR is based on the biological fact that when you look at your right hand, the visual lobe on the left side of your brain is activated, “lights up.” If you then shift your attention to your left hand, the visual brain lobe on the right side of your brain is activated. In other words by consciously directing your attention from left hand to right hand (Hand Activation), you increase the electrical and chemical activity of first a right brain lobe and then a left lobe. When you look at your right hand and simultaneously have a thought of a time when you were very successful, you activate not only your left visual brain lobe (located at the back of your head) but a past memory brain lobe. Then when you very quickly look at your left hand and simultaneously have a thought of something you are planning, you activate still another brain lobe on the right side of your forehead. With both brain lobes thus activated, you are in effect combining the thought circuitry of past success with your present plans, thus becoming completely confident you will also be successful on your new project. HAMR is a rapid and efficient process of Mental Reconditioning by activating all the major lobes

of your brain, one after another, by quickly looking at one hand and then another while simultaneously and deliberately focusing and changing your memories and thoughts. The process works best by activating all your senses as you are having a memory. In other words, as you are remembering a past success, “visualize” the place where it happened, remember friends who supported you at the time, remember any strong smells you may have experienced, etc. So look at your Right Hand and think of a time when you were very successful, then at your Left Hand and think of the details of a new project. Then look at your Right Hand and think of the people who supported you in that previous success. Then look at your Left Hand again and think of those who will support your present project. Then look at your Right Hand again and think of another success in your past. Then look at your Left Hand and again think of your new plans. Then reverse the procedure, starting with your Left Hand while thinking of a time you were very successful. When you succeed in lighting up a significant part of your brain with HAMR, another part of your brain called the Reticular Activating System will

Image courtesy of http://funpoper.com then be induced to emit such neuro-transmitter chemicals as Serotonin and Dopamine that will seal (make permanent) the new brain circuitry you have created. If you are interested in receiving by email a free chart I have prepared for using HAMR to achieve your own goals, please email me at artkunkin@gmail. com and put “Urgent” in the subject line. Also there is a HAMR website on the Internet where you can purchase a book fully explaining the HAMR process.

‘Philomena’—A True Story About Love and Loss

“Philomena,” one of nine motion pictures nominated in the Best Film category, is the true story of Philomena Lee’s search for her son. The screenplay, based on Martin Sixsmith’s book “The Lost Child of Philomena Lee,” published in 2009, was written by Steven Coogan and Jeff Pope. Coogan also coproduced the movie and starred as the journalist Martin Sixsmith. Judy Dench, nominated for her heartfelt, touching performance, is brilliant in the title role. She can make you smile when she talks about the romantic novels she likes to read or gently tug at your heartstrings when she reveals the secret she has kept for fifty years. In the film, as in real life, Martin first hears about Philomena’s story from her daughter Jane at a party. When she learns he is a journalist, formerly with the BBC, she asks if he could help her mother to find the son she was forced to give up for adoption fifty years earlier. Martin declines, telling her that human interest stories don’t interest him, but after talking with his wife, the cynical writer reconsiders his position and decides to meet with Philomena. It is hard to believe that in the not so distant past being an unwed mother, particularly in Ireland, could cause so much pain and humiliation. In Philomena’s case, she was a naive girl who fell in love with a young man she met at a county fair. She knew nothing about love-making and sex. As a result,

www.desertstarweekly.com

she became pregnant at 18. Her horrified parents sent her away to Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea, Ireland where; in 1952, she gave birth to an adorable baby boy, she named Anthony. The head nun, Sister Hildegaard (Barbara Jefford) was a stern, unforgiving

task master who viewed the unfortunate young girls in her care as sinners. Even so, Philomena recalls another young nun at the abbey who secretly took a photo of her little boy. It is a photo she has treasured for a half century. To atone for her sin and to pay

April 23, 2014

back the convent for her care she worked seven days a week in the laundry, only seeing her little boy one hour a week. The gentle, heart-felt story could have turned into sentimental mush in the wrong hands, but Stephen Frears direction and Coogan’s screenplay, laced with comedic moments and banter between the jaded Martin and the forgiving Philomena, keep the story warm, interesting and bittersweet. And while what happened sheds a dark light on the church and the nuns at the abbey, Philomena is able to retain her faith and a strong belief in God and His goodness. This is hard for Martin, a lapsed Catholic, to understand. C o o g a n ’s s c re e n p l a y remains true to Philomena’s quest to be reunited with her son, but he does take some liberties for dramatic and comedic effect. For example, in real-life Martin comes to America on his own, while in the film, Philomena joins him and is part of the fact-finding mission. This device allows us to enjoy their conversations as they make key discoveries together, which reveal a lot about faith and the curative power of forgiveness. In the book, on which the screenplay is based, Martin delves more into her son’s story and his life in the United States. In the film version, Coogan focuses on the facts from Philomena’s point of view and pain. And in the end, the facts revealed are the same,

but are more entertaining with Philomena along for the ride. Coogan’s plot device keeps the story more involving and adds humor and warmth to one woman’s quest to find her firstborn child, a quest that lasted for fifty years before the full truth was discovered. Philomena is happy with Coogan’s film account since it reveals more about her heartbreak while the book delved more deeply into her son’s identity and life in America. To say more would spoil the discoveries revealed in this very special film. “Philomena,” rated PG-13, is now available on DVD... Coogan, an English comedian, is also a fine actor and writer. And if his face looks familiar, but you aren’t sure why. He was the mad-cap director in “Tropic Thunder” starring Ben Stiller and Robert Downey, Jr. and was the miniature Octavius in “Night at the Museum” also starring Ben Stiller. As for the real Philomena, you saw her in the Oscar audience, even though Judi Dench was unable to be there for the ceremonies. Now 80 years old, she worked for thirty years as a psychiatric nurse and has two additional children, a son and a daughter, Jane, four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. And she, like the onscreen Philomena, has made peace with the church and recently had an audience with Pope Francis.

By Pamela Price While the desert was bursting with chocolate bunnies and countless wildflowers 186 Pegasus supporters attended the 19th Annual Easter Sunday Brunch at the Classic Club’s Bellatrix in Palm Desert enjoying a star-studded silent auction honoring the ‘Stars of the Palm Springs Film Festival’. It was an afternoon to savor, with Master of Ceremonies Dan McGrath keeping the it all together, raising dollars by the minute. Hosting one of the desert’s favorite annual events were Dick Shalhoub, Peter Solomon and Dick James. Lori Sarner, Pegasus President and an internationally known equine expert was all smiles as friends and supporters admired gift bags from Cards 4U in Rancho Mirage filled with yummy treats such as Dutch Chocolate Mints and decorative China’s eggs topped with a bonneted chick. Decorating the tables with a stylish spring accent was Catherine EklundMeres. The event’s producers Robin Montgomery and Albeth Paris Grass, with their associates had it right with team spirit combined clever coordination. As volunteer high school honor students carried baskets distributing and collecting auction gifts, ticket’s sales were thriving. That’s easy to understand when you add in seven stylish raffle bags brimming with donated gifts, winning tickets were pulled for Lindi Bigi, Lilly Fox and Mary Janes among others. Then the stars of the Palm Springs International Film Festival took over with lavish prizes inspired by Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Bruce Dern, Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, Steve McQueen, Tom Hanks, Lupita Nyong’o, Thomas Newman, Bono and the American Hustle’s Amy Adams ,Bradley Cooper,

Jennifer Laurence, Christian Bale and Jeremey Renner there was prize’s galore. All gifts were based on the star’s favorite things, said Robin Mongomery, event producer. Here’s why Pegasus could raise funds maintaining therapeutic their riding program for special need’s youth. Who could resist, for example, the Bruce (“always the bad guy” and “crazy about daughter, Laura Dern”) Silent Auction bonanza. This ensemble included Insider Passes for the Palm Springs Short Film Fest, with all the extras. Next, recognizing that Mr. Dern does not smoke or drink, a gift of the newest party drink Ginger Beer was in the mix plus a string of pearl, noting they were “perfect for Bruce Dern’s daughter, actress Laura Dern.” On the other hand, the Matthew McConaughey package featured a a “Celebrate Texas Style” fifth with 16 liters of Jim Beam along with 3 DVDs of Matt’s films, obviously not a teetotaler! Adding to the charisma of the party were eleven “Adopt Pegasus Horses” that were” Looking for Love” ( all adopted) Dick Shalhoub , “Master of the Horses,”reported every horse was adopted. That means Cocoa, Deco, Dillon, Kacey, Oliver, Pay Day, Rocket, Rusty, Shorty, Star and Zia will be cared for with love. These fine horses from a ‘high steppen’ Fox Trotter to a retired Quarter Horse will continue to proudly call the Pegasus their home. The Pegasus spring fling was a stunning success with Pegasus supporters in the winner’s circle. For more info visit PegasusRidingAcademy.org. afternoon set in the Gobi by performing not only choice songs from her wonderful debut “Sing to the Moon” but even a non-album track about freedom titled “Let Me Fall” that included an undeniable rhythm provided by a stand-up bass and elements of African music. Other highlights of her 40-minute set included “She” and the infectious danceminded “Green Garden.” Performing in the heat of the late afternoon on the main stage, City and Colour (the moniker for singer-songwriter Dallas Green) and his band brought authority and authenticity of his blend of Americana, folk and country-rock with a power that connected with the large crowd. “Hope for Now” was among the standouts of City and Colour’s 40-minute outing, with the song’s long and emotional build steeped in power that was palpable. Like Capital Cities’ set a bit earlier, Foster the People found the power to move the masses came via unleashing a number of dance-minded songs that

had festival-goers moving after dark. The group’s “Pumped Up Kids” really excited the crowd, and the closer “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls)” allowed Foster the People to showcase the harder guitar side of their tuneful alt rock-dance approach. Saturday night ended with me wishing I could be in two places at once; catching the first 40 minutes of Muse on the main stage (“Knights of Cydonia” kicked things off with the band’s characteristic bombast), and finishing up my night in a sea of dancing people in the Mojave as the Pet Shop Boys thrilled the party faithful, with “I Get Excited “ (You Get Excited Too), “It’s a Sin,” “Always on my Mind” and other hits from the British duo in a showcase that included incredible lighting and artful sets as well as several costumed dancers. The fest flew to the finish line on day three thanks to outstanding performances spanning the long day. First up was powerful New Orleansbased Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, with the

ensemble blending funk, rock, hip hop and jazz for a crowd positioned in front of the Coachella stage. Other outstanding turns came via indie singer Courtney Barnett, British rocker Frank Turner, alt rockers Superchunk, genrebusting Beck and Canadian troupe Arcade Fire. This was definitely a three-day party that the Coachella faithful will long remember. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival not only boasted countless artists representing a myriad number of musical styles, but the 90,000 or so attendees that attended the second weekend of the event (April 18-20) also got to check out original and one-ofa-kind artwork commissioned for Coachellafest. From the innovative and jaw-dropping “Smart Bird” (which looked like a silver winged robot that flew through the skies flapping its wings like a real bird) to the gigantic astronaut “Escape Velocity,” more than 20 artists’ installations were featured.

hipSTERS FLocK To coAchELLA’S SEcond WEEKEnd By dan Marinelli INDIO – Even though the second weekend (April 18-20) of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival boasts an identical musical lineup to its first weekend (April 11-13), there was no absence of enthusiasm or surprises in the additional goround of the annual three-day party in the desert. Throughout the weekend, the Coachella Stage – the festival’s main stage – featured an eclectic combination of hiphop, pop, electronic dance music (edm), jazz and various sub-genres of rock artists. During Friday’s sunset on the principal stage, English indie pop star Ellie Goulding dazzled a packed crowd with her beloved hits “Starry Eyed” and “Lights” from her initial album Lights. Outkast closed the main stage, and the first stop of their reunion tour, with a more prepared set then their under rehearsed performance last week. The Atlanta rap duo performed classics like outhernplayalisticcadallicmuzik” from their same-titled debut album, and “Hey Ya” and “Roses” from their Grammy Award-winning album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. On day two, popular stoner-rap artist Kid Cudi was not a headliner, but drew a headliner’s crowd when he took the main stage prior

to rock groups Foster the People, Queens of the Stone Age and Muse. In addition to playing his own dark tracks like “Soundtrack 2 My Life,” Cudi brought out the girls of Haim to perform “Red Eye,” and MGMT to perform the massive hit “Pursuit of Happiness.” Juxtaposed to the Coachella Stage was the Outdoor Theatre – slightly smaller than the main stage, and the focal point on Saturday night. Following Capital Cities, with a stage design consisting of a chandelier and a regal tapestry, New Zealand Grammy Award winner Lorde started off the Outdoor Theatres line up of must-see artists with her hit singles “Royals” and “Team” from her debut studio album Pure Heroine. Seven-time Grammy Award winner Pharrell Williams and 13time Grammy Award nominee Nas followed Lorde on the overly clustered Outdoor Theatre with couldn’t-miss performances of their own. In Coachella’s first weekend, Pharrell and Nas wowed the crowd by bringing out megastars Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, Nelly and Busta Rhymes, and Jay-Z and Diddy (or whatever he’s calling himself nowadays), respectively. In the second weekend, Williams and Nas decided to shake things up so the crowd would get an opportunity to

see different surprise guests, and have a neo-special feel that weekend one received by seeing everything the first time. Except for staying with Jay-Z and Busta Rhymes as two of his special guests, Williams brought out Usher, Pusha T, TI, and even the legendary dance group Jabowakeez. The guests were not the only reason people packed the Outdoor Theatre. Williams performed all of his own hits, too, including the superpopular, Oscar-nominated song from Despicable Me 2, “Happy.” On the 20-year anniversary of the hip-hop artist’s debut album, Illmatic, there was no Jay-Z; however, Nas brought out surprise guest Damien Marley to sing “Welcome to Jamrock” and “Road to Zion.” Nas closed out the second night at the Outdoor Theatre by bringing out the adored Lauryn Hill to sing her classic Fugees’ song “Ready or Not” before Hill and Nas capped the unique set with their collaboration “If I Ruled the World.” On the final day, edm dominated the festival. The entire weekend at the Sahara Tent, a hangar-like stage the size of a football field, complete with state of the art sound systems. Lights and graphics were home to some of the biggest names in edm. Dutch hardstyle DJ/ producers Showtek started a long list of A-list DJ/producer’s April 23, 2014

Sunday, including Krewella, Alesso, Big Gigantic featuring the Shadow Hills High School band, Adventure Club and finally, “duck-turned-DJ,” Duck Sauce. Sunday’s biggest act on the Coachella Stage – based on crowd volume – was fellow edm producer Calvin Harris. Harris’ fans arrived dressed ready to rave, and some even held signs saying, “Calvin I Need Your Love” – which is the name one of his most famous songs with lyrics by Ellie Goulding. In addition to “I Need Your Love,” Harris played renowned songs like “Awooga,” and played a special remix of the Killers “When You Were Young,” as the crowd danced their final night away. Despite some minor flaws with the venue layout, and the amount of people crammed in a not-big-enough Empire Polo Club; Coachella’s other weekend proved that the first weekend is not a total spoiler rendering the second weekend pointless. Both weekends of Coachella 2014 were special for those who attended – a memorable time for any music lover who will be cherished forever. Coachella’s second weekend is here to stay, and who knows, maybe one day, there will be a Coachella weekend three.

Small Army of Volunteers Salute Earth Day

By desert Star Staff Desert Hot Springs, CA. – Several local church groups will team up with the community activist group Pick Up Crew of Desert Hot Springs to remove roadside litter along Two Bunch Palms Trail and clean up debris on vacant land close to the legendary Two Bunch Palms Resort. On Saturday, April 26th, more than 200 volunteers will gather at the Desert Hot Springs Spa Hotel, located at 10805 Palm Drive, at 7:30 a.m. to receive instructions for the cleanup. For decades, Two Bunch Palms Resort has attracted spa enthusiasts from around the globe who desires its natural hot Mineral Springs. Now, under new ownership, Two Bunch Palms Resort is primed to emerge as an international health and wellness destination. The resort recently completed its restaurant renovation, and the city council approved the resort’s expansion plans at it’s meeting in April of this year. City leaders worked expeditiously to facilitate the

revitalization plans, recognizing Two Bunch Palms Resort as its flagship resort and sharing its vision for the future. “New city leadership has attracted an active core of volunteers helping to change the landscape, starting with trash abatement near businesses,” said Paula Terifaj, organizer of the Pick Up Crew. “Our crew is laying out the welcome mat for the beautifully renovated resort with an invitation to other business owners to build here.” The Pick Up Crew is a grassroots movement calling for increased volunteerism in the City of Desert Hot Springs. Residents are encouraged to volunteer a minimum of five hours per month by helping any nonprofit agency or working committee that provides benefits to the city. This movement began as an effort to clean up Palm Drive last December, after a mural was painted on a building next to a vacant lot filled with trash—but since then has been cleaned up.

By Francesca Crolley When’s the last time you heard about nanotechnology? The science of the very small - manipulating the atomic structure of materials on a scale of a nanometer (one-billionth of a meter)? The product is called Nansulate, which is a patented paint-on insulation with an extremely low thermal conductivity. The product is manufactured here in the U.S. by Industrial Nanotech, Inc. (www.nansulate.com), and it combines specially engineered microscopic particles with nanoscale internal architecture with a high quality, clear, water-based acrylic resin system, creating a product that can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed onto surfaces, just like a paint. This technology is earth friendly and non-toxic, and includes other performance characteristics such as resistance to mold/mildew, moisture and UV resistance, and the ability to inhibit rust. The history of the product began in industry, with the technology first being designed for and implemented in factories to insulate pipes, tanks, and similar equipment. But as homeowners found it online, they started purchasing it to paint the walls and attics of their homes, and found that it worked very well as a home insulation to reduce their energy bills. The company responded to the demand and developed a residential version of Nansulate,

HomeProtect Clear Coat, and has since also developed a companion roof coating. A unique aspect of the technology is that it is clear, so it can be applied to painted walls, wood, brick and other surfaces without covering them up or changing the color. Many people also use it to paint skylights, water heaters, hotwater pipes, and even outdoor pet enclosures. With a liquid form of protection people can easily insulate areas that are difficult, such as older homes with uninsulated walls or solid block walls, which are costly to insulate with traditional methods. The economical price of the product and the fact that it’s a do-it-yourself application also allows a shorter payback, typically reported by customers to be three to five years, than some other energy-saving technologies like low E windows. How much you can save in energy costs is variable, just like any other insulation, but case studies on the company’s website report customers saving between 20 to 40 percent. Due to the thin-film nature of the technology, it does not carry an R-value (measured at an inch of thickness). However, the company has independent testing, which shows a reduction of heat transmission by 34.8% per test standards. The product reduces both conductive and radiant heat flow, in either direction, to reduce both heating and cooling bills, depending upon the season. www.desertstarweekly.com

May 9, which is National Public Gardens Day, is an ideal time to celebrate the warmer weather and visit a local garden. “Even if your green thumb means you have a garden right in your own backyard. A visit to a public space can be fun, informative and is a hallmark of the season,” says Casey Sclar, Ph.D., Executive Director of the American Public Gardens Association. “In fact, many gardeners use the trip to get inspired and learn how to practice environmental stewardship at home.” Here are some great ways to make the trip: Celebrate Mom Looking for fun Mother’s Day Activities for the family? National Public Gardens Day takes place annually on Mother’s Day weekend. The unofficial starts to spring, and a time when the environment is top of mind. Celebrated by more than 500 arboreta, botanic gardens, conservatories, entertainment gardens, historical landscapes, museums, and zoos, many sites are extending the National Public Gardens Day celebration throughout Mother’s Day weekend with special events, tours and activities designed specifically for families. “What backdrop would be more perfect for celebrating mom than a beautiful garden?” says Sclar. other special offers to visitors on May 9th. To find a garden near you and learn more about the celebration, visit www. NationalPublicGardensDay.org. Learn The staff at a public garden can be a great source of information when it comes to gardening techniques. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. For example, public gardens use efficient watering practices and have insight on responsible water use and irrigation systems. Learn how to more efficiently irrigate your own garden by consulting with your local public garden. Additionally, landscaping at public gardens can demonstrate what plants bloom at similar times and what arrangements look great together. And while you’re there, don’t forget to pick up some reading material on gardening and botany. Get Supplies Public gardens often sell plants, flowers and trees during annual festivals, providing top quality native and adaptable additions to your garden. With the sale comes professional experience and advice of the sort that cannot be found in nurseries or hardware stores. Whether you’re a family looking forward to spending the day together, a couple on a romantic date or a horticulture enthusiast looking for information and inspiration, a visit to a public garden is a low-cost way to spend the day outdoors. Ways to Solve Cat Behavior Problems

From inappropriate marking to excessive meowing to scratching, a misbehaving cat can cause disruption to your home. Unfortunately, behavior problems are the number-one reason for pet euthanasia, resulting in the death of approximately 15 million pets

annually, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Even so, not all these bad behaviors are your pets “fault.” Stress, caused by a variety of factors, can contribute to these issues. After visiting a veterinarian to rule out any physical causes

for your feline’s follies, take steps to encourage good behavior and decrease stress in your cat’s life. “You don’t need to resort to drastic measures to stop a cat’s behavioral issues,” says Caryn Stichler, vice president of marketing for Sergeant`s Pet Care Products. “There are a

Sweet Barks, where fourlegged friends find a new leash on life, kicks off a fundraising campaign to open its doors later in 2014 for unwanted and neglected dogs, hope is in sight. One woman’s vision is quickly become a reality as California-based Bail Bondsman turned rescuer kicks off this brick campaign to build a new animal sanctuary. Sweet Barks Animal Sanctuary’s vision is five acres of land currently identified in Winchester, California and will be able to serve 40-60 dogs at a time. The innovative vision is

quickly becoming a reality with the support of the local animal welfare community. Now, founder Kimberlyn Lebsock is turning to fellow animal lovers to raise funds with the brick campaign to build the sanctuary and begin saving more lives. The bricks will line the property with walkways and create pillars for the Sanctuary honoring all pledgers and set for life. Sweet Barks hopes to open its doors in 2014 with the help of Kimberlyn and her partners will build out the sanctuary to meet the unique needs of the rescue dogs

they plan on serving. The vision for Sweet Barks began in 2011 when Kimberlyn rescued Roxy, a stray scheduled to be euthanized. Roxy was saved and quickly rehomed with a loving family. “The reward I got when I saved Roxy was incredible,” says Kimberlyn. “Roxy wasn’t just a dog that had found a home: she was a life that had been saved. From then on I knew I could do more. Now I have the chance to reach many more dogs with the help of the animal welfare community. Currently the team is looking

number of ways to create a calm, stress-free environment for your pet including using pheromonebased products.” If your cat’s stress is causing you stress, here are a few steps you can take to change your pet’s behavior: • Litter box: Is your kitty’s use of his litter box unreliable? Make sure you’re keeping it clean and changing the litter regularly. Don’t relocate the box. Animals, like people, form habits and can be stressed out by change. • Noise: If you’re the host with the most, be mindful of the consequences. Loud noises and a room full of strangers can add stress to your pet’s life. Take steps to limit the burden by never blasting music and ensuring your pet has access to water, a litter box and food in the less trafficked areas of your home. • Be proactive: More than two million cat owners have used a calming product on their pet. If your pet’s behavioral problems are triggered by travel, thunderstorms, fireworks or new social situations, consider a collar for your cat that’s been

scientifically proven to reduce or eliminate such behaviors. For example, Sergeant’s Vetscription Calming Collar for Cats mimics the pheromone that the mother cat produces to calm and reassure and calm her kittens. Pheromones are chemical substances used for communication between members of a species. Good for all ages and breeds, the pheromone calming collar helps cats feel safe and secure. More information can be found at www.sergeants.com. • Comfortable space: Make sure your cat’s living space is not just a place to survive, but a place to thrive. Cats love to observe the world around them, so make sure your kitty has access to windows. Be sure to provide your cat with plenty of toys and spend some quality time together each day as mental and physical stimulations are important Remember, behavioral problems aren’t seasonal — they affect pet’s year round. Take steps to reduce stress in your pet’s life and utilize a calming collar to keep your cat happy and comfortable. (StatePoint)

for supporters to help this vision become a reality. Supporters using the Brick campaign will be honored with the highest recognition. “The property is perfect and we’ve got the support to help countless of dogs who would otherwise be euthanized,” says Kimberlyn. “Sweet Barks will bring together the local animal welfare community: shelters, rescues,

and adopters are all part of getting more dogs into loving homes. I can’t wait to see that happen.” Please support Sweet Barks Animal Sanctuary come to life with the gift of a custom engraved brick honoring you for helping to save more lives. Hand Feed Aussie Birds The living desert Birds of the Australian Outback Exhibit closes April 27th

By desert Star Staff PALM DESERT/Indian Wells. CA . CA. Don’t miss the last opportunity to see and hand feed the more than 300 birds of the Australian Outback on display at The Living Desert. This popular, interactive exhibit closes on Sunday, April 27th, 2014.

The colorful and lively, chirping birds are “budgies,” a type of parakeet weighing about an ounce each, and feathered with shades of blue, green, white and yellow. The aviary, specially constructed for this exhibit, allows zoo patrons to enter, intermingle and feed the

swooping birds with seed sticks. “These budgies have flown into the hearts of thousands of visitors of all ages over the last four months,” says Allen Monroe, President/CEO of The Living Desert. “We’ve been thrilled to offer this experience and hope everyone has a chance to meet

them before they leave.” Entrance into the Birds of the Australian Outback, including one feed stick, is $2 for nonmembers and $1 for members of The Living Desert in addition to regular park admission: Adult’s $17.25, Seniors and Military $15.75, Children 3 – 12 $8.75, Children under 3 Free. Additional feed sticks are available for purchase. Sponsored by the City of Palm Desert and presented by Dal Weber and Kelly Carmien, the exhibit is open during regular park hours through April 27, 2014. Just arrived: The Living Desert is proud to introduce a pair of Crested Coua to its wildlife population. Originally, from the island of Madagascar, there is a very limited number of

ITS

this bird species found in United States zoos. The Crested Coua brother and sister pair came from the Walt Disney Animal Kingdom. They now reside in the African area of the zoo, next to the recently acquired Fossa. The expanding aviary population at The Living Desert includes nearly 30 birds, with ten of them indigenous to Africa. “These are the first Crested Coua to come to us, and a beautiful addition to our aviary family,” says Allen Monroe, CEO & President of The Living Desert. “Their dazzling colors are mesmerizing, and the birds have settled comfortably into their new home in the Madagascar exhibit.” Crested Couas are a type of cuckoo bird coming from forests, savannas and brush lands. Their brilliant markings feature bright blue skin around the eyes, distinguished by a dramatic turquoise coloring, and a plumed feather crest on their head. The Coua is a medium-sized bird from 18 to 24 inches long. They have long white-tipped feather tails used for balance since they are not very durable fliers and typically walk along the tree limbs to get around. The Coua’s third toe can reverse backward enabling a tough grip on branches. They primarily eat insects, snails and fruit. A female Coua lays two to three eggs and she and the male Coua takes turn keeping the eggs warm. Interestingly, Coua chicks make the feeding job easier for their parents with their red and white markings on the inside of the chick’s mouth giving the appearance of a bullseye. These markings show the parents where to put the food.
