Beyoncé Makes History with Memorable Coachella Performance KMIR Andrew F. Johnson Beyoncé performed for throngs of screaming fans Saturday night at Coachella after a year’s wait. “Y’all ready Coachella?” she asked the crowd as she opened her set, becoming the first woman of color to

headline the music festival in Indio, California. Excited fans had a new nickname for this year’s festival: Beychella. Other headliners included the Weekend and Eminem. “Coachella, thank you for allowing me to be the first

black woman to headline,” Beyoncé said, before singing “Run the World (Girls).” Surprise reunion The singer opened her long-anticipated performance singing “Crazy in Love” accompanied by a New Orleans-style brass marching

band, and later crooned a rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as the black national anthem. She sang several songs from her album “Lemonade,” backed up by the band and surrounded by step dancers. For nearly two

hours, Beyoncé revealed surprise after surprise. A tribute to Nina Simone and quotes from Malcolm X. She also sang “Deja Vu” with her husband, Jay-Z, and danced with Continues on Page 10

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Rosie Casals and Tori Fretz hosted the 4th yearly Rosie Casals and Jackie Cooper Team Tennis Proam on April 22nd. The event was held at the Indian Ridge Country Club. Tennis was played on the many tennis courts at Indian Ridge. The tennis pro-am benefits the Love and Love Foundation. Many Jackie Cooper’s friends got together to help this foundation that brings tennis to our youth. Jackie Cooper

had a fantastic career as a tennis player and mainly as a coach later. He was part of the Tennis Garden before becoming a tennis pro at the Palm Desert Resort. Jackie was loved by so many; when he passed away in 2013, he left many friends in the desert. The winners of the Proam tournament received their awards. almost 2 hours of stand up comedy and then answers questions from the audience. Feherty came roaring on stage in a bright red golf cart which made a sudden stop. He talked about how he got his sense of humor and storytelling from his father. They were hard times in Ireland, and people took to comedy to cope. Laughter was a self-defense remedy when there were bombings and killings all the time. He said he had an attention deficit disorder as a child. He also told about his addiction to alcohol and how he beat it.

He says he likes to tell jokes about the Flemings and the Murphys which are Irish jokes. Many of his stories included Pro-Golfers that he knew and played Golf with. These were funny stories that told a little bit about the persona of the golfer. He said Tiger was a bit of a prankster as he found out when he put exlax in his drink. The result of that was heard by thousands of people as he still had a mike attached and everyone listened to the whole thing. They were laughing hard when he got back to finish playing that hole. He doesn’t stop with the cuss words when it is part of the story. One of the funniest parts

was when he was talking about women golfers and how they had to find a way to get their boobs out of the way. He not only talked about it but showed it hilariously. He mentioned other players like Ernie Els, Lee Trevino, Nick Faldo, and Seve Biasteros. Funny stories that make playing golf with these pros a fun time. He was a good golfer who played on the Ryder Cup team and told of some of his accomplishments as a golfer. I could retell a few of the stories he said, but they were a bit off color for print but hilariously funny. I will not miss his appearance if he comes back to the McCallum in the future.

His TV series has had some of the essential VIPs that include Presidents, NBA stars, actors, mayors, comedians, and outstanding sports and golf figures. He was also nominated for an EMMY as an Outstanding Sports Personality and studio host. He has been dubbed as one of the funniest men by Yahoo Sports. That honor was well-deserved. Consider Reviewing your accounts, As Interest Rates Climb

By Janice Gough Jerome Powell, Federal Reserve Chairman, increased interest rates by 25 basis points to 1.75% recently. The move is an indicator of the central bank’s confidence in the health of the U.S. economy. Specifically, it signals that Fed officials believe the labor market and inflation are on the right track. With low unemployment rates of 4.3% (CA.), the Fed may slowly take increases. Our energy prices are low, compared to global risks and this will help to keep inflation contained. Although Inflation

expectations have picked up significantly due to global geopolitical conditions and new changes in trade agreements. The interest rate on everything from credit cards to adjustable-rate mortgages could soon be headed higher. The Federal Reserve signaled once more that it would likely begin raising its benchmark interest rate later this year, as part of the central bank’s strategy to stimulate job growth. The federal fund’s rates have been very low for a while now, and this has lowered expenses for consumers. However, we, as Consumers, should be mindful of what the potential cumulative effect could be if the Fed takes several rate increases over the course of a couple of years. There are some steps to consider before interest rates begin climbing. It is essential to review the type of loans you have and decide which ones you wish to pay off or if you anticipate taking a long time making payments, shop to find a fixed interest rate and lock it in. Variable-interest loans, such as credit cards, an adjustable-rate mortgage or home equity line of credit will increase as these are the types of investments that will be primarily affected by changes in the federal funds rate. That’s because the annual percentage rate, or APR, on these loans is typically a

combination of a percentage rate that’s determined by the borrower’s credit score plus the prime rate. Since the top speed is a benchmark interest rate that tends to follow the trajectory of the federal funds rate, thus. If the Fed funds rate steadily rises, so will the prime rate, translating into a higher overall interest rate on many consumer loans. This is not something that has necessarily a significant impact on your household budget because you have payment flexibility, however when looking at the long-term picture, you will be saving a lot by switching to fixed rates now. It is an excellent time to consider options for refinancing or making a large purchase in which, you want to lock in the lower prices. A short fix to get lower interest rates is to do a balance transfer or other form of refinancing. The prospect of rising interest rates makes balance transfer credit card offers particularly appealing for short-term fixes. Such offers include an introductory period to pay off the balance with no, or a sharply reduced, interest rate. The period can last for a year or more. Initial balances for credit cards were not always at zero percent. That became the norm over the past six or ten years because the federal funds rate has been so low. It is common to see card balance transfer offers

of 0% percent for periods ranging from 12 months to 18 months. But when the Fed begins raising rates, that will make it less attractive for banks to offer these deals. These deals will provide time to shop the market and restructure debt. Consider a plan to pay off debt as soon as possible. It makes sense to seek a lower interest rate and to put yourself on solid ground. Homeowners may be tempted to access the equity in their home to refinance their debts. That can make sense, especially because mortgage interest payments can be deducted come tax time. But remember there’s a

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL The California Legislature continues to try to “fix” California common interest developments, yet elected representatives still do not understand the dynamic of volunteer run communities or what they need. Senate Bill 1265 is the latest example. SB1265, authored by Senator Wieckowski from Fremont, seeks to revamp the HOA election process for the second time in 13 years. This bill would bar any HOA board candidacy eligibility requirements, except that candidates must be members. Many associations ban delinquent members, non-resident members, or members suing the HOA, from serving as directors. Other HOAs ban two co-owners from running. Should this bill pass, all those sensible limitations on eligibility would be illegal. The bill also dramatically increases the technical requirements which must be followed during the election process, and would change Civil

5145(a) to REQUIRE courts to overturn an election if they are shown an error (the current statute says a judge MAY overturn the election). The bill also begins with a declaration that HOAs are quasi-governments, just like cities, functioning like cities “in almost every way.” This is a dangerous and false statement. Try to tell the 24 unit building in Whittier that they are just like a city! HOAs are neighborhoods which have been given via covenants simple tools to enable shared living. They don’t have courts, or large staffs of dozens of full time employees, and their job is not to enforce all applicable laws – just to make sure neighbors are good neighbors and the governing documents are followed, and the community preserved. The bill also would require HOAs to store outer ballot envelopes, which are signed by the voters, for later inspection and copying. Members may be justifiably concerned about their signatures being copied and distributed. The Corporations Code at Section 7341 allows a nonprofit board to suspend

member voting rights. Many HOAs use this process in response to assessment delinquencies, reasoning it makes no sense to allow a homeowner to vote when they are not paying their share of the association expenses. However, SB1265, if it became law, would make that illegal, and override Corporations Code 7341. Large and mid-sized HOAs have in recent years for the most part learned to conduct elections following the huge increase in technicalities which occurred in 2005. However, thousands of smaller HOAs either are unaware of the law (Civil Code 510-5145) or ignore it completely. This bill would guarantee bad neighbors the right to run for the board and dramatically increase the number of HOA elections set aside on technicalities. Senator Wieckowski clearly has not served as an HOA director, or he would never have agreed to author SB 1265. The bill will discourage HOA elections, and increase election disputes rather than decrease them. Small to mid-size associations need help

trade-off since you are shifting unsecured debt onto a loan that’s secured by your home. However, it is always wise for homeowners with equity to establish a Home Equity line of credit, just so that you have a fixed-rate personal loan from a bank or from a peer-to-peer lender, where immediate cash in case of an emergency. You pay no interest until you use it. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs. regarding HOA elections. Most small associations struggle on without professional management, much less legal counsel. They need simpler elections, not the kind of elections presented by SB1265. The bill is scheduled for a committee hearing on May 2. Homeowners, board members and managers may want to make their voices heard on this matter. advisor at the Intergenerational Poverty Initiative of the state’s Department of Workforce Services, says academic success is critical for increasing opportunities for students once they leave school and enter the workforce. “Kids who are participating in these programs can have opportunities to learn how to play violin or participate in a sporting activity,” says Gruber, “and they’re also being supported in their academic achievement for school.” In 2014, the Utah Legislature passed a measure designed to break the cycle of poverty by setting aside funds for students to take part A new study on afterschool programs found that nearly one in three Utah students living under the in after-school programs. Report: Rising Rents Putting Financial Security at Risk By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – High rents are threatening families’ financial security and putting home ownership out of reach for many, according to a new report. The analysis from The Pew Charitable Trusts says since the Great Recession, the number of households paying more than 30 percent of their pre-tax income in rent has grown. Erin Currier, director of Pew’s Family Financial Security and Mobility Project, says 43 million American families now rent their homes, a number that has been growing in recent years. “As it has grown, the proportion of renters who struggle with rent has also grown,” says Currier. “And

our analysis is showing that being rent-burdened is disproportionately affecting older Americans and people of color.” She says in 2015, 38 percent of all renter households were “rent burdened,” an increase of about 19 percent since 2001. Currier notes that in the same period of time, the racial gap grew wider as the severity of the rent burden increased. “The gap between the share of white and AfricanAmerican households who were spending 50 percent or more of their income on rent grew by 66 percent,” she says. The data also shows that almost half of households headed by someone age 65 or older are rent burdened, and more than 20 percent pay half

or more of their income in rent. Rent-burdened households often suffer other forms of financial insecurity. Currier says almost two-thirds have less than $400 cash in the bank, and half have less than $10 in savings. “Compare that to the typical homeowner who has more than $7,000,” she says. “And households that were rent burdened for at least a year were less likely to be able to transition to homeownership than those that never experienced being rent burdened. “ The Pew report says policy makers should consider ways to make renting a home affordable for the 17 million rent-burdened American families.

About 17 million American families pay 30 percent or more of their income in rent.

Net-Neutrality Fight Comes to Sacramento Today By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A showdown over net neutrality comes to California today with a hearing in the State Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee. Senate Bill 822 would forbid internet service providers in the Golden State from prioritizing or slowing down any given website, and from charging a fee for faster internet speeds. Ryan Singel, the founder of a Silicon Valley startup called Contextly, says ISPs should not be able to charge big money for higher upload speeds - because that would put smaller companies at a huge disadvantage.

4

DesertSTAR

“Without that protection, the cost of starting a company becomes much higher,” he says. “Because you’re going to have to not just pay for your own servers but then pay AT&T, pay Verizon, pay Comcast and pay CenturyLink.” When the FCC repealed Obama-era neutrality rules in December, Chairman Agit Pai said the regulations are too onerous for ISPs, which he believes should not be regulated like a utility. A bill in the U.S. Senate to reinstate net-neutrality rules nationally currently needs just one vote to pass, but it would face an uphill battle getting past the House and the president. Singel says for now

the best path is to pass net neutrality in huge states such as California, which has often been a leader in progressive legislation. “We’ve set rules for emissions and for privacy, and often what that does is

send a signal to other states to enact those same level of protections, or companies just find that it’s easier to follow the California rules in all of their operations,” he explains. Lobbyists on both sides have been working for and

against SB 822 for weeks, with consumer groups arguing that it maintains an even playing field online - while industry groups say it would make the California Public Utilities Commission too powerful.

FAMILY FEATURES

o luxurious home upgrade is complete without the enhancements of modern technology. High-tech and intelligent devices lend ease to everyday activities and enrich your ability to enjoy the comforts of home. With new products joining this category at an exponential pace, there’s a way to boost the smart function of every room, even the bathroom.

Climate controls

Environmental elements like lighting and temperature are among the first signals your

brain processes when you enter a new space. Aligning those nuances with your comfort and preferences is the ultimate expression of personalization. Motion or voice control sensors make it possible to bring lights to life with next to no effort, while a smart thermostat with differentiated climate zones can adjust to meet your needs throughout the day, perhaps kicking up a few degrees to prevent a chill when you emerge from a steamy shower.

Uncommon commodes

There truly is no limit to the home features that can work harder,

faster and smarter – even when it comes to the toilet. If the notion of an intelligent toilet seems extreme to your senses, you may not be alone. “When Americans hear the word bidet, most have an outdated picture in their minds of a standalone fixture, but in fact, the functionality is now built into a toilet or attachable seats, and they are simple to use. Once you try one, you won’t be able to live without it,” said Shane Allis, marketing director of Kohler Sanitary Products. “From intelligent toilets to cleansing seats that attach to existing toilets, modern day bidets are for consumers who are looking for an upgrade to their toilet routine.” In fact, according to a recent survey conducted by Kohler, about two-thirds of Americans would choose a toilet that would give them a cleaner, fresher feeling, and 3 in 5 think washing with water would give them a cleaner feel than toilet paper alone. An overall fresher feeling and features like a deodorizer, night light and heated seat have strong appeal, according to the same survey, and those features are all offered in options like the

Kohler Veil, an ultimate, one-piece intelligent toilet with integrated cleansing functionality that provides optimum hygiene and individual comfort. From personal cleansing to an LED nightlight to hands-free opening, closing and flushing – all of which are easy to control on a touchscreen LCD remote control – the toilet brings unexpected options to your bathroom. Explore the available models and learn more about intelligent toilets at Kohler.com/ IntelligentToilets.

Shower with power

Whether it’s a playlist that energizes you for the day or soothing sounds to center you before an important meeting, you can give new meaning to singing in the rain with a showerhead that includes a built-in wireless, removable speaker that you can sync to your smartphone music library. When you take your shower digital, you can actually bring water, steam, music and light together into one sensory experience. Beyond that, it’s even possible to configure your shower to cycle through spa programs that target different areas of your

body with varied water sprays and temperatures.

Hydrotherapy haven

A jetted tub is just the beginning when it comes to creating a spa-like atmosphere. Today’s options let you trick out your tub with everything from bubbles and heat to sound and color. Advanced hydrotherapy options use air or sound to massage, soothe, invigorate or relax your body and your mind – all controlled at the touch of a button. Don’t forget the heated back to keep you warm even longer.

Perfect privacy

If you’re blessed with a stunning view out the bathroom window or if you simply prefer the aura of natural light, you may be reluctant to hide behind heavy window treatments. Yet again, technology offers the solution. Shades you can power with a remote control and even film coverings that convert from transparent to opaque with the touch of a button can give you the freedom to embrace your privacy or celebrate the sun’s rays.

Tech-sessories

The big features may deliver the wow factor, but little touches can add up for a big impact as well. Mirrors that recognize your face and voice to deliver customized media, such as news and music, can also be programmed to alter the temperature and lighting while you conduct your toiletry business. Other accessories to round out your high-tech renovation include devices such as smart scales that integrate with other devices to maximize your health and wellness routine. With these tech upgrades and more, you can turn an ordinary bathroom into an entirely new, refreshing experience.

Groups Claim Thousands Improperly Removed from CA Voting Rolls

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – Thousands of people were improperly removed from California voting rolls in 2017, possibly due to an administrative error, says a California coalition for people who are or have been in prison. On Wednesday, the “All of Us or None” coalition sent letters demanding restoration of voting rights to agencies in ten counties, including Butte, Contra Costa, Kings, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Santa Clara, Solano, Tulare and Ventura. Staff attorney Brittany Stonesifer with the group Legal Services for Prisoners with Children – part of the coalition – says the counties are failing to comply with a law that took effect in January 2017. It clarified that people sentenced to county jail or parole retain their voting rights – and only those currently in state prison or on state parole for felonies lose the franchise. “And the primary demand

was to restore improperly removed people from voter registration, to fix their systems to make sure that that doesn’t happen again, and to send notice to people who were improperly removed,” says Stonesifer, “so that they have an opportunity to re-register and to turn out to vote in time for the primary election in June.” A 2011 prison realignment law decreed that people with non-serious, nonviolent, nonsexual felonies be sentenced to county jail, not state prison. Confusion over that group’s right to vote led to lawsuits, and then the law clarifying their voting rights. The coalition crossreferenced public records and found in L.A. County alone, more than 3,000 eligible voters were dropped in 2017. The L.A. County Registrar of Voters’ issued a statement saying it has a longstanding partnership with the re-entry community, is committed to upholding voting rights, will look into the claim and

A 2011 state law that required sentencing people with some types of offenses to county jail instead of state prison has created confusion that may have led some California counties to improperly drop them from the voting rolls. (svanblar/iStockphoto) resolve any concerns. Stonesifer calls this a civil-rights issue that must be addressed to maintain a functioning democracy. “This is a historical problem,” says Stonesifer. “You know, people who

have convictions are disproportionately lower income, and people of color have been historically disenfranchised in the United States. So, this just feeds into that long history of disenfranchisement.”

She notes that multiple studies have shown that people who retain their right to vote after incarceration have a stronger sense of civic responsibility and are much less likely to end up behind bars again.

community celebrated, but conservative legislators resurrected the issue during the special session with hopes of overturning Northam’s veto. Luis Aguilar, advocacy and elections manager for the immigrant-rights group CASA, said the effort was all a game of politics. “Trying to scapegoat immigrants, trying to say that immigrants are criminals, trying to say they shouldn’t have basic protections just like everyone else, so that’s why we are against this,” says Aguilar. “It’s a victory in that sense.” Aguilar and groups such as the Virginia Coalition for Immigrant Rights say lawmakers should focus on Medicaid expansion, not criminalizing immigrants and refugees. The bill’s text was short and direct: “No locality shall adopt

any ordinance, procedure, or policy that restricts the enforcement of federal immigration laws.” Aguilar said the policy was filled with hate and the Latino community will remember come election time. “Not only with the Latino community but immigrants in general, they try to use them for political purposes in this way,” says Aguilar. “They’re going to be hit with reality, and that’s what happened in 2017 on the House election races in Virginia and will probably happen again in 2019.” In his veto, Northam suggested the legislation would require localities to shoulder the burden of enforcing federal immigration law, either by deputizing local police or by holding people who are undocumented in jails. He called the measure “unnecessary and divisive.”

less than a thousand feet from his front door. He says her condition became so bad over the last decade that she once fainted. “It became increasingly apparent to her especially, and also to me, that if she’s

going to live through this thing, we’re going to have to move” he says. “So we did.” In six western states, including Montana, more than 74,000 people live within a half-mile of an oil or gas facility on public lands.

By Desert Star Staff The public has a few more days to comment on a change to the Bureau of Land Management’s methane waste prevention rule. Critics say the change will leave the regulation toothless. The current rule, which took half a decade to create, was designed to cut down on the venting, flaring and leaking of natural gas from oil and gas operations on federal and tribal lands. It’s estimated Obama-era rules would have saved taxpayers $330 million a year, the

estimated value of the gas that escapes into the atmosphere. Pat Wilson is a retired rancher who used to live near an oil operation in Montana. He says efforts to undo this rule are part of the new administration’s short-sighted approach to land management. “It’s part of the current culture of thumbing one’s nose at science and thumbing one’s nose at any possibility that human action can result in environmental harm,” says Wilson. “It’s just so wrong-headed.” The BLM, under the

direction of Ryan Zinke’s Interior Department, says the rule as it stands now is too cumbersome for companies. Wilson is a member of the Northern Plains Resource Council, which delivered a petition with more than 1,000 signatures opposing changes to Montana’s congressional delegation in early April. The public has until Monday to comment on the rule change at ‘regulations.gov.’ Wilson ended up moving out of Montana because his wife’s asthma was exacerbated by an oil-drilling operation

Eastern Religions; and practices, such as Tibetan Buddhism, Hindu Philosophies, Meditation, and Pranic Breathing. If any of this sounds interesting to you, then you’re sure to find the vibrations at Shakti Fest to your liking. More than six thousand

people are expected to gather over the extended five-day festival to sing and dance with Kirtan and Hindu music, attend master yoga sessions, and discover alternative healing modalities. Festival-goers can sample delicious vegetarian foods and supplements for free from all the organic vendors.. Yoga is everywhere in the United States. Most big box stores sell yoga mats, straps and blocks, and most gyms offer yoga class regularly. For those who want to get their fix of yoga on, and off the mat, yoga retreats tend to be expensive in places like Costa Rica. However, Shakti Fest is a great alternative to that expensive option. “We are invincible, inexhaustible, inspirational... here is so much diversity in the human race, we can all recognize the absolute power of the people to do good,” says festival promoter Sridhar Silberfein on his

website. “Coming together in a community of compassionate connection, we can send out the energies of healing and compassion across the globe. Never underestimate the power of love!” “From May 10-14, we combine these powerful energies in celebration of the Divine Feminine. We stand together in honor of Mother Earth, nature, and family. Join the sangha (spiritual community) at Shakti Fest this year and be part of a greater whole.” Tickets are $275 for the five-day festival. Kids under 12 are free. Seniors over 62 are $150 with local desert I.D. Military $100 full festival pass - Free on Sunday. Camping $60, RV $80. Single day tickets are available. Go to www. bhaktifest.com. P.T. Barnum Is ‘The Greatest Showman’ BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

The greatest showman in the 20th Century Fox film, now available on DVD, is P.T. Barnum, born in 1810. He is played by the charismatic song and dance man, Hugh Jackman. The son of a poor tailor, Barnum falls in love at an early age with the daughter of a very wealthy man. He and Charity (Michelle Williams) marry, against her parent’s wishes and have two adoring daughters. Together they unite to pursue his dreams. A master manipulator, Barnum cons a bank into financing a “museum of curiosities.” His enterprise draws few customers until he adds a bearded lady (Keala Settle), a very tiny Tom Thumb (Sam Humphrey), conjoined twins (Yusaku Komori and Danial Son) and other unusual performers. At this point, his showcase finally attracts paying customers. However, Barnum’s show does not receive proper publicity in the press. It also

alienates an angry mob of townspeople who don’t want performers they consider freaks to be on display in their town. Before he launches the ‘Greatest Show on Earth,” which will become the Barnum and Bailey circus, Barnum also helps start the American career of noted Swedish soprano, Jenny Lind (Rebecca Ferguson). He is supported in all of these endeavors by joining forces with the very wealthy Phillip Carlyle (Zac Efron). Eventually, against his parent’s wishes, Carlyle falls in love with a beautiful young black aerialist in Barnum’s show played by Zendaya. The two young lovers express their feelings in song as they fly through the air together -- a highpoint in the movie. But will their romance be ended by his parent’s disdain and the times in which they live? For Barnum “The noblest art is that which makes people happy,” but in staging

his shows, he also exploited his ‘unusual’ performers. In one show-stopping number “This Is Me” is sung by the bearded lady Keala Settle who expresses her pride in who she is as a person. “The Greatest Showman” was directed by Michael Gracey from a script by Jenny

Bicks and James Condon, with music composed by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul of “La La Land” fame. Even if you have seen this film in theaters, you might want to check it out on DVD for the abundant featurettes that go into great detail about how the film was made. You learn

more about the characters and the creation of the choreography in the process. These extras, along with the film itself, is great fun to watch. “The Greatest Showman” is rated PG for thematic elements that include a brawl. Running time is 1 hour and 45 minutes.

By Desert Star Staff Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appears to be losing the sweaty fashionista and hipster vote ahead of June’s California primary as 20,000 fans of hiphop star YG screamed “F*ck Donald Trump” at the Coachella Music Festival this weekend.

The Compton native performed his song “FDT” during DJ Mustard’s set while thousands gave the middle finger to Trump and everything the presidential hopeful represents. The 26-year-old YG collaborated with Nipsey Hussle earlier this month

to release the track, which addresses Trump’s openly racist attitudes towards African-Americans. Hip-hop fans were also “feeling the Bern” when Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders introduced the alternative group Run the Jewels on stage with

a video message. “I thought the least I could do for both of you is help you out by bringing a few young people together,” Sanders joked. What was supposed to be the most significant act at the festival, the Guns N’ Roses reunion, fell flat, in part

because lead singer Axl Rose had to perform on a giant throne due to a broken foot and fans were not impressed. This year is the 10th anniversary of Daft Punk’s epic set, which was recorded by multiple cameras in the infancy of the digital revolution and stitched together for all to enjoy.

AM-Docs 2018 Festival at Camelot Theatres Palm Springs

Madame Xia and granddaughter Xia Yuan By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Seven years ago, AMDOCS Film Festival founder Teddy Grouya, felt that filmmakers of documentaries needed a proper festival of their own to display their diverse and wide-ranging, special subjectmatter films, for lovers and audiences of the documentary film genre in a festival format with all the trimmings. The audiences for the first AM-DOCS festival has grown exponentially to the point where seven years later, the place to see just documentary films in America, is right here in Palm Springs, California, at The Palm Springs Cultural Center and Camelot Theatres. The popularity of the festival has created a need for a Spanish language segment to meet the demand for Spanish speaking documentaries at the 2018 festival. Grouya, wisely added a two-day break-out segment on April 13th and 14th that was held at Cathedral City’s Mary Pickford Theatre, where 30 Latino documentaries were screened; with some Q & A sessions following the screenings. The 2018, eight-day festival that ended on April 14th, screened 170 films, covering a broad range of subjects from filmmakers located all over the world; some of whom, attended with their films in competition. We were fortunate to see the festival documentary film entry “The Girl and the Picture”, written, produced, and directed by Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Vanessa Roth. Her documentary is a strong, powerful, visual statement on war and survival in general, and more specifically, following WW II and its aftermath, her film depicts how it affects all people, not just the victims, but also the survivors and their extended families for generations. Ms. Roth’s main focus in “The Girl and the Picture” is on

the 1937 Japanese army’s infamous scorched earth policy in its invasion of Nanking, China (one of China’s six ancient capitals back in 1638 A.D. then spelled as Nanjing), during what came to be called “The Rape of Nanking” prior to World War II. Thousands of Nanking’s citizenry were raped, shot and killed by marauding Japanese troops during the invasion. The film chronicles and explores the life of Xia Shuqin, now 88 years-old, who became an orphan at eight years of age when her parents and her sibling were murdered by invading Japanese forces. It’s an inspiring true story of a young Chinese girl who could not read or write, yet somehow, miraculously survived wars and life under Chairman Mao Tze Tun. It is a story that has never been told until now. Ms. Roth weaves a fascinating ‘East Meets West’ documentary story from interviews with Xia, her daughter, and her sevenyear-old grandson. The West component is represented by Chris Magee, the grandson of American missionary John Magee who lived in Nanking in the 1920’s and 30’s. It was John’s diaries, letters, old newspaper clips, plus invaluable 16mm home movies and archival film footage given to Ms. Roth, along with her detailed, research and additional information that became the basis for her documentary film. As both writer and director, Ms. Roth nicely weaves the various interviews and the exact location sites into the story. Conducting and filming her interviews, at the actual locations of 80 years ago, whenever possible, lends her film a ring of authenticity and verisimilitude that are the hallmarks of good documentary filmmaking. “The Girl and the Picture”, is a story that has remained unknown for far too many years. Now it’s being shared with everyone at film festival around America. I got to briefly chat

with Ms. Roth following her screening and the Q & A session of her film over a bottle of deliciously cold spring water. Vanessa Roth is a softspoken, bright, highly educated filmmaker with a Master’s Degree in Social Work, and

Eric Roth of the movie “Forrest Gump”. Her mother is the Archeologist Linda Roth. Ms. Roth’s canon of films is quite impressive for one so young and talented. She is 47 years old, but looks 30. She is the recipient of the prestigious Alfred I. du Pont-Columbia award for “Taken In: The Lives of America’s Foster Children”. Her film festival wins and honors include two Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prizes, Cine Golden Eagles, Casey Medals and a MacArthur Grant. Some of her award-winning documentary films include: “Close to Home”, “Aging Out”,” Schools of the 21st Century”, ‘The Third Monday in October”, “9/11’s Toxic Dust”, No Tomorrow”, “The Other Side”, “American Teacher”, and “The Texas Promise”. Filmmaker Vanessa Roth is too busy making award winning films too worry about anything as mundane as looking her age. How many of your films, I asked, have you entered in film festivals over the decade

road trips? “No, actually I enjoy it. Of, course, I miss my three children, but that’s what makes going home so special when I do get home.” Where is home these days? “I live in Brooklyn.” Where are you taking this film next? “This is the world premiere screening of “The Girl and the Picture.” We also will screen it at The Newport Film Festival, and the Tribecca Film Festival in New York City, with more festivals dates to be announced.” What year did you win your Oscar? “That was 2008, as the producer of “FREEHELD” – Best Short Film Documentary.” What lies ahead for filmmaker Vanessa Roth in 2018/2019? “Last year I was the Executive Producer and Director of “Daughters of Destiny: The Journey of Shanti Bhavan” – a four-part Netflix Original documentary series that debuted on July 28, 2017.” Is it possible that we may see a full-length feature motion picture from you some day? Ms. Roth smiles sweetly, as I thank her for her time away

Chris Magee, grandson of missionary John Magee a minor in Family Law from Columbia University, NY. Her father is the Academy Award-winning screenwriter

that you’ve been a professional filmmaker? She replied, “I think it’s about 12.” Do you ever tire of the film circuit

Twin Tunnels Project Rescued by SoCal’s Largest Water Agency By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has thrown its support behind the twin tunnels project, known as the “Water Fix,” voting late Tuesday to spend almost $11 billion to build two tunnels underneath the delta to bring Sacramento River water to the Central Valley and Southern California. Supporters, including Gov. Jerry Brown, have said it is an investment in the future that will make water supplies more reliable and guard against drought. However, Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla, executive director of the group Restore the Delta, said she thinks the project would be a disaster for water quality and for salmon in the delta. “We’ve been taking out 50 percent of the water when science tells us we should be taking out 25 percent,” she said, “and so, how do you make up for that water? You build the recycling projects

in Southern California. You do mass conservation and recycling, and put in the water-reuse infrastructure and programs, and really get efficient with water use.” The district also rejected a more cautious alternative plan of just over $5 billion for a single tunnel. Many spoke at the hearing against both water projects, saying Southern California ratepayers shouldn’t be charged more to pay for a multi-billion-dollar project that primarily benefits water districts in the Central Valley that serve large-scale agriculture districts that have declined to pitch in to pay for the tunnels. The deal did not put a cap on what MWD will pay, so the costs also could go significantly higher. Adam Scow, California director for the nonprofit group Food and Water Watch, said the project doesn’t bring any new water down south; it just shifts who has the power to control it. “Whether it’s the one

Conservation groups protested before the Metropolitan Water District vote in Los Angeles on Tuesday. (Restore the Delta) tunnel or the two-tunnel, it’s a colossal waste of money for Southern California,” he said. “We’re talking about billions of dollars to essentially deliver the same water

that Southern California is already getting from the delta. It’s simply a money grab and a power grab by the Metropolitan Water District.” Conservation groups are

Beyond Earth Day: The Fight for Plastic Bag Fees

When not recycled, plastic bags can litter the environment and harm wildlife. (Twenty20) By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Folks around Ohio spent Earth Day picking up plastic bags, bottles and litter from parks and other areas, but efforts to prevent this type of waste pollution in the first place could be hampered.

Senate Bill 210 would prevent local communities from placing fees on disposable bags, bottles and other waste containers. At DeSalle High School in Columbus, Michelle Maina worked on a class project about the need for bag fees.

She contends disposable bags contribute greatly to landfill waste, litter the environment and harm wildlife. “I have seen a great deal of concern of this issue in our generation,” she says. “Each day we see pollution in our community, and if we don’t

take action now this condition will continue to deteriorate. In the future, I can’t imagine how the world will look.” Maina and other students recently met with legislators on the Senate committee considering SB 210. While supporters of the legislation claim bag fees are costly for business and consumers, opponents say part of the fee would help the retailer mitigate any increased expenses. About five percent of disposable plastic bags are estimated to be recycled. The city of Lakewood recently approved a resolution that supports a proposed 10cent fee for disposable plastic bags in Cuyahoga County. Council member atlarge Tristan Rader says with more than three and a half miles of shoreline, his city is greatly concerned about the 5.5 million pounds of plastic pollution that

Iowa Pipeline Opponents Face Tough Penalties By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa — Opponents of the Dakota Access Pipeline are still awaiting federal and Iowa Supreme Court rulings in a case over the controversial project, but any new actions against pipelines could land them in jail for 25 years. Gov. Kim Reynolds signed the “Sabotage” legislation, Senate File 2235, last week. The law imposes some of the harshest penalties in the nation for criminal acts against

The pipeline cuts through 18 counties and was opposed by environmentalists and some farmers who objected to the use of eminent domain to obtain access to their land. And he adds SB 210 is an attack on home rule. “There’s some people in Columbus that want to strong-arm municipalities and they’re willing to forsake the constitution of the state to do that, and I think that’s a gross misuse of the Legislature and the power that they have to act in Ohio’s best interest,” he laments. Elissa Yoder Mann with the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter explains that addressing waste takes collaboration at the local level, as each community faces its own unique challenges. “What we see successful is a partnership between businesses, local government and nonprofits who have curbside recycling and city waste pickup,” she notes. “So taking a broad-brush approach to waste is not successful.” About 200 counties and municipalities across the U.S. have imposed a plasticbag fee or banned them.

•••••••••••••• permit more corporations to claim critical infrastructure status and use eminent domain to change property from private to common. “So it’s one thing to take private land and build a road or add it to a national park,” Raffensperger said, “but to take it and give it to a private corporation is undermining that power to move private property into the common.” The new law makes the crime of critical infrastructure sabotage a Class B felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison and a fine of between $85,000 and $100,000. www.desertstarweekly.com

In a surprise, George H.W. Bush greets Barbara’s mourners

By Desert Star Staff Former President George H.W. Bush surprisingly greeted some of the hundreds of mourners filing through a large Houston church on Friday as they paid final respects to his wife of 73 years, former first lady Barbara Bush. A spray of dozens of pink and yellow roses covered her closed, light-colored metallic casket in the sanctuary of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. The 93-year-old former president sat in a wheelchair just a few feet from the coffin, smiling as people shook his outstretched hand and offered condolences. Barbara Bush died Tuesday at age 92 at the couple’s Houston home, where her husband was also by her side. Many women attending the daylong viewing wore blue, Barbara Bush’s favorite color, and pearls, a nod to her go-to jewelry. The nation’s 41st president hadn’t been scheduled to

attend but decided to go after watching video from the church, where about 1,600 people had passed through in the first hour. He stayed for about 15 minutes. “I think he was very touched by all of the people who were taking the time out of their lives,” family spokesman Jim McGrath said. Visitors went through security checks before boarding shuttle buses to travel a few miles to the nation’s largest Episcopal church. Lucy Orlando was among more than 100 people in line well before bus service began, after visiting from Florida. Originally from Haiti, the 74-year-old said had admired Barbara Bush for years, including for her work promoting literacy. “She was a lovely lady, and she loves people,” said Orlando, who was carrying a gray suitcase containing framed photos of the couple and members of their family,

including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura. Varney Johnson, 49, a social worker originally from Liberia, said he also came to honor the former first lady’s work in supporting literacy efforts, saying: “This woman dedicated her life to educating children.” “I believe that Barbara Bush is a mother and a grandmother to every American,” added Jamie Sumicek, 52, of Houston. “Whether you’re Democrat or whether you’re Republican, whether you’re young or old, she is the matriarch of America. That’s what moved me to visit.” A hearse containing the former first lady’s casket arrived before daybreak at the church. Her body was to be in repose until midnight. Among the officials allowed in earlier were the Senate’s majority whip, Texas Sen.

John Cornyn, and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson. The invitation-only funeral will be held Saturday behind her husband’s presidential library at Texas A&M University, about 100 miles northwest of Houston. The burial site is in a gated plot surrounded by trees and near a creek where the couple’s 3-year-old daughter, Robin, who died of leukemia in 1953, is buried. In a statement released Friday, the family said Barbara Bush had selected son Jeb to deliver a eulogy along with her longtime friend Susan Baker, wife of former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, and historian Jon Meacham, who wrote a 2015 biography of her husband. About 1,500 guests were expected to attend, including first lady Melania Trump, former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary, and former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle.

Geffen Playhouse Stages New Joshua Harmon Comedy “Signicicant Other”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association The last time a Joshua Harmon play graced the boards of the Geffen Playhouse it was the hilarious, sharp, insightful, and biting comedy called “Bad Jews”, directed by Matt Shakman. That was three seasons ago. As Facebook notifications likes to say… “a lot has happened since you last checked in on Facebook...” It’s now April 2018. Matt Shakman is now the Artistic Director at the Geffen, and he is still in love with Joshua Harmon plays. I’m a fan of Harmon as well. That being said, I eagerly looked forward to another Harmon play “Significant Other”, now playing on the Gil Cates stage. The story of four best friends: Jordan, Laura, Vanessa, and Kiki, is a resonating premise in today’s community of women, who when they marry one by one, they break up that comfortable rut and the companionship of that old gang of mine syndrome. It reminds me of the great Paddy Chayefsky’s poignant comedy “Marty”, of men comfortable in their ruts as well, until Marty brakes away from his gang of guys to marry. Love is always in the air in almost all plays. It’s the most powerful emotion on the planet, however, this “Significant Other”, sort of shoots itself in the foot, and comes across as just another clever TV sit-com, but without the ubiquitous laugh track. Life is a little more complicated than listening to a bunch of chatty women seeking a man to marry. Societal pressure for women to mate is

misplaced in today’s America. The terms ‘significant other’ or ‘partner’ now covers a broad segment of today’s society. The marriage state today, however, is still the most traditional arrangement for individuals. The various algorithms, and choices people make when it comes to men/women relationships is the stuff of novels, TV shows and movies. And we’ve seen most of them in all their forms, with one exception, the relationship of gay men and their circle of female friends. I personally can’t recall a play where the gay man/ female closeness dynamic as it’s portrayed in “Significant Other” comes to mind. But it certainly works when this bitter-sweet comedy played by Will Von Vogt, as Jordan Berman, whose best friend of many years is Laura (Melanie Field). Jordan and Laura are “besties” - who have great onstage chemistry - but share their closeness with two other female friends of Laura’s, Vanessa (Vella Lovell), and Kiki (Keilly McQuail). Everyone is single and looking for Mr. Right – even Jordan who admits to being smitten with a male co-worker at work. There are no secrets between Jordan and Laura. When Laura meets her future husband and decides to get married Jordan is devastated. What will happen to his relationship to his closest best friend and confidante? Up until now, Jordan’s mother Helene Berman (Conchetta Tomei) has filled the role of advisor and sympathetic ear. Worse yet, Vanessa and Kiki now are thinking of marrying as well. Will Von Vogt, is flat out terrific as a wounded, trusting, and caring Jordan who feels betrayed by Laura. All right, he can’t marry Laura, but did

Photo by Chris Whitaker she have to exclude him from being one of her bridesmaids? Yes, it’s a laugh moment for the audience, but it sets in motion a bitter tirade from an emotional Jordan on Laura’s total betrayal of their years of friendship. Laura is astounded at Jordan’s outburst, and strikes back with a blistering defense of her decision. The fabric of their years of friendship is beginning to fray. It’s an

interesting juxtaposing of characters who are like ships in the night. So close, and yet so far, but no spoiler alerts here. Also, there are six characters who are played by two talented actors who split three roles each: John Garet Stoker, performs as Will/Conrad/ Tony and Preston Martin, portrays Zach/Evan/Roger. The poignant, at times, comedy is directed by Stephen

Brackett who leads the creative team of Scenic Designer Sibyl Wickersheimer, Costume Designer Bobby Frederick Tilley, Lighting Designer Eric Southern, Sound Designer Stowe Nelson, and Production Stage Manager Bree Sherry. “Significant Other”, performs at the Geffen Playhouse in the Gil Cates Theatre, and runs through to May 6, 2018.
