Girls at Stagecoach

California’s biggest Country Music Festival attracted fans from around the globe Story and Photos by Pat Krause It’s hard to believe that this is the 9th Stagecoach event, and that it has become one of the topmost country music festivals in the U.S. The event brings in the highest country stars along with stars from yesteryear and stars from a diverse type of music for all to enjoy. That is what makes this

event so different from other festivals, the diversity of the music. Country, Blue Grass with fiddles, Harmonicas and accordions, Country rock and even some rock and pop performers. Music for all as stage areas was filled for some of the most well known stars. They just announced the top entertainer of the year,

Miranda Lambert, stole the show with her songs, ‘Short Shorts’ and ‘Lace Nylons’. She showed why she was chosen as the entertainer of the year. Miranda was the headliner for Saturday, and she followed Justin Moore and Dierks Bentley that had the crowd wanting more. Friday night’s performers were Jake Owen

By Ken Ritter Associated Press LAS VEGAS (AP) - Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather hadn’t even decided how much it would cost home viewers to watch their fight when the head of the Nevada Athletic Commission started planning security for their big bout. Five times in the 10 weeks since the two welterweights set a date for their long-awaited fight,

commission chief Francisco Aguilar has convened state, federal and local police, fire, tourism and fight officials for one thing: to keep hundreds of thousands of people outside the ring safe. Boxing, particularly in big matches like this one, poses a special challenge to Las Vegas officials. “We’re not preparing for a fight night. We’re preparing for a fight week,” Deputy Las Vegas Police

Chief Gary Schofield said, pointing to a series of events, including Friday’s weigh-in at the MGM Grand hotel. As a security and crowd-control measure, advance tickets ($10 face value) will be required for the first time. He described a security plan of concentric circles. and Kip Moore followed by Headliner Tim McGraw. Sunday night had top names, The Band Perry and Sara Evans followed by headliner Blake Sheldon, well known for his judging on the Voice. All these acts were on the Mane Stage. The other Palomino stage saw stars like Gregg Allman, Mickey Gilley, George

Thorogood, Oakridge Boys, Eric Burdon, The Time Jumpers with Vince Gill, Merle Haggard and ZZ Top that had the whole area filled to overflowing with people. People were finding space to dance outside the Palomino stage. Mustang Stage saw so many performers from some of Continues on Page 10

One Night Only Concert

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The One Night Only Concert at the McCallum Theatre on April 22nd was everything that a music lover could want. Host and producer of the show, Michael Childers, brought the Best of Broadway singers to the Stage. The theme this year was ‘Back to the Sixties’ with music from that era. Honorary chairs were Annette Bloch, Helene Galen, Barbara Keller and Harold Matzner with Event cochairs Barbara Fromm and Terri Ketover, who make this event possible. The presenting sponsor was again Well Fargo, and the concert benefited Jewish Family Services of the Desert. The singers included TV stars; Emmy and Tony award winners; Broadway stars, teen idols, songwriters and producers and even an American Idol finalist. What a line-up of talent who performed for another sold-out concert. The event has proven in its 10 years to bring one of the most versatile and talented groups of entertainers to our Desert. This is the only place you can see this kind of talent

in one place and in one theatre in ‘One Night Only’ as the name tells it all. Some of the most notable names were Teen Idol Lou Christie, Liz Callaway and her sister Ann Hampton Callaway, Loretta Devine, the famous Mary Wilson and our own local celebrity Lucie Arnaz. The final performance was by Chairs - Barbara Fromm, Barbara Keller, Helene Galen, Michael Childers, American Idol, Jacob Annette Bloch, Terri Ketover and Harold Matzner Lusk singing Aquarians/ Let The Sunshine In, while young dancers in flower children costumes danced through the audience. All the performers then appeared on stage to sing along. The stage was literally filled with singers, and next producer Michael Childers came on stage to give his final bow to the audience. Another fantastic One-Night Only concert that raised a lot of money for Jewish Family Services that serve Coachella Valley people in need with numerous programs. Story and Photos by Pat Krause Helen Galen and Jamie Kabler held a One Night Only Pre-concert Party at the home of Helene Galen on April 21st, the night before the big concert at the McCallum Theatre. The party is held for guests, supporters and entertainers to get to know each other. Appetizers along with Pizza, hot dogs and desserts where Ice Cream treats straight from an ice cream cart vendor were a novel menu for the night that was enjoyed by all. The High

School band arrived on the lawn opposite the pool to play to while Helene Galen directed from the poolside for a fun event. The night continued with impromptu performances by Ann Hampton Callaway and her sister Liz Callaway. They started the entertainment that was continued by many of the other attending artists who sang for a couple of hours to end the night. This party has become a big part of the One-Night Only event.

Is the end of the Mutual Fund Era near?

disappear. This could easily have the effect of propelling interest rates to the highest we’ve experienced in years. It could mean we’ve reached or are nearing the end of a 30-year period of historically low longterm interest rates. Bond funds have remained strong throughout this period because of the inverse relationship between bonds and interest rates: when rates go down, generally speaking, bond values go up. This is exactly what has supported mutual fund families since the turn of the century. Mutual fund families have endured the past 13 years because inflows to bond funds have offset the outflows from stock funds. Stock market performance and long-term interest rates are now closely tied to the Fed’s tinkering, The unwinding of the Fed’s ‘easing policy’ could eventually trigger not only the next major market drop, but the eventual return of higher longterm interest rates. today, and they are likely to remain so. Recent “record” market highs also hinge on the Fed’s caffeine fixes and government spin, not true economic recovery. Temporary stock market strength, like the one we’re seeing now, is being propped up by unsustainable Fed policy. Consider that a 25% drop takes 33% to recoup to breakeven. We’ve had a number of 25% or greater drops in our lifetime. History indicates that a third major market drop is likely to occur. When it does, it will – according to history – be in the range of 50% or more! As for money markets, although quantitative easing ended, short-term rates may stay near zero for a very long time. Japan has had near-zero shortterm interest rates for 23 years. If the same thing happens in this country, money markets are still only going to be paying a fraction of a percent. Stock funds, and now bond funds, aren’t the right place to be. Earning 0.2% in a money

market isn’t the right place to be. Evidence of the reversal for bond funds is not news you are going to hear from the CEO of Fidelity or Vanguard. Evidence of the reversal for bond funds is already showing up in the asset reports of many bond fund managers. PIMCO, which manages some of the more popular bond funds, assets dropped 5% during the third quarter of 2014.: With Stocks at all time highs, you should consider locking in those profits now. It’s imperative to avoid any risk of equities erasing their Fed-induced gains. If you are in bond funds, rising rates will cut into their earnings quickly. Returns could actually go negative.

the flexibility of associations by protecting the power of boards to impose a certain level of assessment increase, regardless of more strict provisions in the HOA governing documents. Civil Code Section 5605(b) states that, regardless of any stricter language in the documents, a board can increase the regular assessments up to 20% per fiscal year without a vote of the members. Your membership petition is an important way to communicate with your board, but the board nevertheless can increase assessments up to 20%. So, no, your board did not violate the law, which on this subject overrides your HOA bylaws. However, before you get too angry with your board, carefully Dear K.V.: look at your HOA budget, The Davis-Stirling Common and ask the board to help the Interest Development Act protects community understand why the increase was necessary. Best, Kelly

Dear J.K.: Votes to impose a special assessment or a general assessment increase beyond the board’s power under Civil Code Section 5605(b) must be votes by the membership with 30 day notice and secret ballots per the process described in Civil 5100(a). Civil Code 5065(b) also says that such approval requires a majority of a quorum of members. Civil Code 5605(c) defines “quorum” as more than 50% of the members. [Note - it states “of the members”, not “of the members entitled to vote” so this is different than the voting power.] Also note that it defines quorum as MORE than 50%. So, for example, if your association has 50 members, quorum is 26 or more participating, and a majority of those participating could approve such an assessment or increase. If governing documents place a HIGHER requirement on member votes on assessments, such as, for example, 2/3, it would conflict with Civil Code 5605, and a majority of a quorum would be sufficient. Thanks, Kelly

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Mr. Richardson, I read your column in the [paper] every week. I really appreciate your help to clarify the difference between our Bylaws and state laws regarding our increased assessment. Our HOA By-laws:” the maximum annual assessment

may be increased six percent (6%) ...without a vote of the membership.” and “ the maximum annual assessment may be increased above the six percent ...by a vote of the members ...such change shall have the assent of fifty-one percent (51%) of the vote of each class of members...” Despite of our petition collected more than 60% of our members’ signatures, our board decided to increase our monthly dues 15%. Did our board violate our Bylaws or did they do the right thing because state laws take over our By-laws. Thank you very much for your time. K.V., Westminster

ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER Arlette Capel

Hi Mr. Richardson – here’s an interesting one for you that has our HOA a bit confused. Our CC&Rs require a 75% vote to change the document and for other votes. Our articles of incorporation have a 2/3 vote for changes. But are special assessments possible with only 50% of the members’ votes? [Civil Code 5605] is a little confusing because it seems to say that more restrictive limitations by our governing docs prevail, yet the last sentence of 5605(b) indicates just a majority can approve special assessments that exceed 5% (which the one we’re considering does). Thanks, J.K., Bonsall

treasury may not quickly sink where rates are back to 5% tomorrow, but it seems unlikely that bond prices would ever get back to a consistent upward trend without the Feds support. When bonds do drop in value, the result is not a paper loss but a real loss: Think about a bond fund now with a 4% interest/dividend rate. Over the last 30 years, its annual total return might have averaged 6%. The additional 2% would most likely have been from appreciation due to declining interest rates. When interest rates start heading in the other direction, however, it’s likely that 2% would now have to be subtracted from the 4% annual yield rather than added to it, resulting in a 2% average return. On the other hand, would you really want to take any risk at all to earn 2%? If interest rates should shoot up quickly, this minimal gain could turn into an outright loss! Stock funds and money markets – are also ineffective

Mariah Carey makes Grand Entrance for Vegas Show By Kimberly Pierceall Associated Press LAS VEGAS (AP) - Mariah Carey wanted Las Vegas to know there’s a new girl in town. The pop icon arrived to cheering screams at Caesars Palace Monday night in a classic 1936 pink convertible trailing behind 18 mobile billboards bearing the titles of her number one hits including “Always be my baby” from 1996 and “Heartbreaker” from 1999. The gladiator-clad men took it from there, carrying Carey through the casino on a platform fit for Cleopatra. The grand entrance marked her Las Vegas Strip arrival that

will bring her chart-topping hits to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace starting May 6 with performances through July. Called “Mariah #1 to Infinity,” the show is timed with the debut of Carey’s newest breakup single and music video dubbed “Infinity.” Carey sang along to the new song on a stage inside, at one point filming herself and the crowd with an iPhone. “I can’t wait to sing all the hits for you guys,” she told the crowd. Devin Cole, 28, can’t wait to hear them. The Queens resident with a Carey collage on his phone hopped a flight to Las

Vegas for the weekend when he heard about the Caesars event. Cole credited Carey’s songs for keeping him alive as he battled depression at 16 years old. “She’s a lyrical goddess,” he said. The Grammy winner is among the best-selling female solo artists of all time and joins the ranks of Celine Dion, Elton John, Rod Stewart and Shania Twain, who have all taken up residency at The Colosseum. Across the Strip, pop star Britney Spears calls a Planet Hollywood stage home. Tickets for Carey’s show are priced from $55 to $250. Source KMIR

West Nile Virus Detected in Indio

By KMIR News Staff INDIO, Ca. - The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District says the first instance of West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Indio. The agency out out a press release: A sample of mosquitoes in Indio tested by the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District lab is positive for West Nile virus. They are the first mosquitoes in 2015 to test positive for the virus. This is the first time since 2012 that mosquitoes have tested positive so early in the season in the Coachella Valley when the Valley had five human cases, its highest number of human cases since 2004 when there were seven cases. Mosquitoes from the positive sample were collected from a trap located near the corner of Avenue 46 and Madison Street in Indio. District

staff will post disease notification signs in communities located near the trap location and will intensify mosquito surveillance, with an increase in traps and larval control in the surrounding area, in an effort to reduce the number of mosquitoes and interrupt further transmission of disease. “With the warm winter we had, we are not surprised to find evidence of West Nile virus transmission so early in the season, said Jeremy Wittie, Scientific Operations Manager. “Our team will work hard to identify mosquito breeding sources and eliminate immature mosquitoes. But there are clearly infected adult mosquitoes out there and we ask Valley residents to recognize this and take every necessary precaution to prevent mosquito bites and protect themselves from what could be a very serious disease. Protect yourself from

mosquito bites: ¡ Apply Insect Repellent. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), picaridin (KBR 3023), oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] or IR3535 according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Lemon eucalyptus oil should not be used on children under three years of age. ¡ Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours. Dawn and dusk are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities during that time. ¡ Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. Wear longsleeves, long pants, and socks when outdoors to help keep mosquitoes away from skin. Mosquito-Proof Your Home

¡ Drain Standing Water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places for mosquitoes to breed by draining/discarding items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty unused flowerpots and wading

pools. Change water in birdbaths and pet bowls at least weekly. ¡ Install or Repair Screens. Keep mosquitoes outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors. Source KMIR

Season Slowing Down after Major Events in Valley

By Angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS -- The temperatures are about to start really heating up in the valley, just as the major events of the season are cooling off. The Stagecoach Country Music Festival and the White Party both wrapped up this weekend. Those are typically the final large-scale events of the season. The ferris wheel is coming down in Palm Springs from the massive White Party over the weekend.

Meantime the RVs are rolling out of town following Stagecoach. “Starting this weekend we’re definitely going a little bit slower mode, we cannot command the premium rates we’ve been commanding for the past four months, said Aftab Dada, the general manager of Hilton Palm Springs. During peak season, a room at the Hilton is 350 to 425 dollars a night, but those rates are dropping now to 195 to 225 a night.

Dada, who is also the chairman of PS Resorts, says the season extends now to the end of Memorial Day weekend. “Which we call it the premiere season, but April happens to be now the number one month out of the entire year, primarily due to all the special events, said Dada.

Several events including the Palm Springs International Film Festival and Modernism Week had record-breaking numbers. “Modernism Week for us was beautiful, it was an amazing week with all the activities in town, so I feel like it’s been a really great season, said Preston Long, the manager of Just Fabulous. At Just Fabulous in Palm Springs they say it was a hot season, but will cool just a bit as we enter warmer months. “We see some drop off but because of the Fourth of July weekend, Memorial Day weekend, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day we still have a lot of people coming into town, especially from Los Angeles or even the Pacific Northwest, said Stephen Monkarsh, the owner of Just Fabulous. The Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism says we’ve become a year-round destination, and the hotel tax numbers show it. “If you looked at the transient

There are more events to come starting in May. “The Film Noir Festival that’s coming, in June we have Splash House that’s going to be here, we have Restaurant Week that will be running in June, we also have the Palm Springs ShortFest that will be here in town, said Ginther. People we spoke with expect the summer months to still be good, saying that a strong international market helps drive the summer months as well as out nearby visitors from Los Angeles and Orange County. Indio Students Hold Walk-A-Thon for Pets

By Angela Monroe INDIO -- Students from Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Indio organized a walk-a-thon. The goal is to help raise money to pay for their pets that need microchips, vaccines, rabies shots or neutering. Thomas Jefferson Middle School teacher, Julie Warner, wanted to help her students who couldn’t afford to have the pets they love properly vaccinated. She met with Kim Hardee of Loving All Animals and organized a color run/walk to raise the proper funds. Saturday morning, all her students showed up bright and early to support their pets and each other. “They’ve been really excited they really love the color run for the animals, and I was surprised but all of my students are here today. They were here at 7a-m ready and willing to partake in today’s events,” said Warner. Even the students that don’t have pets showed up to support their classmates that do. “We were all just really excited to help out the animals. We were coming for this day... we

Manure Trade Show’s Slogan Contest Gets Pile of Entries By The Associated Press Entries are piling up for a slogan contest being held this year by the North American Manure Expo. The trade show, now in its 13th year, showcases the latest technology in manure handling, treatment and application. It’s being held in July in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. An official event slogan has already been settled on: “2015 Manure Expo: Manure than you can Handle!” It will appear on the front of a T-shirt. But contestants are vying to land a spot on the back of the T-shirt, which event organizers say will display 10 of the “crappiest” also-rans. Writers of the 10 alternate slogans get a free T-shirt. Many entries, predictably, contain a vulgar substitute for “manure.”

An Illuminating Journey at The Getty Villa

Herb Garden. Photo by © 2006 J. Paul Getty Trust By Pam Price Despite the closure of the California Incline, which is at present undergoing improvements for the next year, we were in no way deterred from visiting two fascinating exhibits now on view at the Getty Villa in Malibu: Dangerous Perfection: Funerary Vases from Southern Italy (through May 11) and Ancient Luxury and the Roman Silver Treasure from Berthouville, France through August 17. Both will take you on an extraordinary journey through art history. The museum is the original location of the beautiful villa, which is an educational center and museum devoted to the study of the cultures and arts of Rome, Greece and Etruria. At this time, you can view these two captivating exhibits revealing facets of lifestyle and tastes reflecting the culture and lifestyle enjoyed during the Roman Empire. Began by viewing a remarkable exhibit of 90piece giltsilver objects of art, such as ornamental vessels and statuettes discovered by a French farmer plowing his field in 1830. Expertly restored they are on loan from the Cabinet des Medailles at the Bibliotheque National de France. A cache of gold jewelry, from gem-encrusted bracelets to necklaces worn by the ladies of the Roman Empire adds to the drama of this exhibit. Kenneth Lapatin, associate curator of antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum said, in the Los Angeles Times that “precious stones in antiquity were valued more than gold and silver,” adding that they were sourced from conquered territories and thought to create “an aura of magical powers.” Equally enlightening is the exhibit, Dangerous Perfection: Funerary Vases from Southern Italy, representing a six year collaboration on “investigating and conserving the monumental vases on view.” Listening to David Saunders, the associate www.desertstarweekly.com

curator of antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum explains the painstaking process of restoration is a story unto itself. Determining the forensic techniques involved in verifying where the vases were buried along with how they were reassembled during the nineteenth and methods to be used in cleaning, repairing process was fascinating. Imagine reuniting countless pieces of pottery shards in order to bring these funerary vases back to life. Discover more details at www.getty.edu Continue the journey on Pacific Coast Highway to the Annenberg Community Beach House, which is an off-radar destination on five acres of oceanfront property featuring refreshing salt air, free concerts and exhibits. It is accessible by foot or bike via the beach bike bath with parking available. (Details on the ‘Beach House’

If you visit on May 12, there’s film historian and educator Kimberly Truhler with a talk from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. This talk, comparing different eras in actress Joan Crawford’s career through The Women (1939) to Mildred Pierce (1945) is part of a series of informative talks. STAGECOACH 2015 Continued from Page 1 the alternative types of music and many newcomers that are making a name for themselves in music, Balsam Range, Hot Rize; Steve Earle and Devil Makes Three to name just a few. There is so much more to

do and see at Stagecoach. There is the Honkytonks where people can hear new musicians, and DJs perform where they can also dance. The vendors were so numerous with a variety of foods offered, Clothes to buy, Hats and

cowboy gear, Tattoos parlors with the real and fake variety, a place to make a personal teeshirt and much more. There were water stations, shade areas and charging stations for cell phones and hay bales for people to sit and rest. It’s no wonder tickets sell out so fast for this event.

STAGECOACH ON THE PALOMINO STAGE By Robert Kinsler Since the initial Stagecoach was staged in Indio in 2007; the country music event has grown in popularity attracting fans from around the globe who came to soak in the sun, fun, and plenty of country, Americana and rock ‘n’ roll music featured on a number of stages positioned around the Empire Polo Club. This year the event once again offered an outstanding mix of up-and-comers; modern-day hit makers and legendary veteran artists. Here is a rundown of my favorite performances. Friday, April 24 Lindi Ortega was the first performer to take the stage at Stagecoach, hitting the Palomino Stage at 1 p.m. on Friday. No worries. The Nashville-based singer performed a number of wonderful songs, including the memorable country ballad “Cigarettes & Truckstops.” The Lone Bellow performed the single most artistically arresting set I caught all weekend at Stagecoach. The trio mixed up country, folk, bluegrass and indie rock in a 50-minute powerhouse performance, including the soaring “Then Came The Morning” and the anthemic “Green Eyes and a Heart of Gold.” Sturgill Simpson impressed a big crowd at Coachella the previous weekend, so it’s no surprise. He attracted a similarly-large audience to see him perform at the Palomino for a 45-minute set featuring his modern-edged take on traditional country music highlighted by versions of “Long White Line” and “Living the Dream” off his latest album “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music.” Merle Haggard, now 78, is one of the country music’s most beloved living legends. His

performance inside a packed Palomino Tent was highlighted by emotional takes on timeless classics, including “Mama Tried,” “Silver Wings,” “If I Could Only Fly” and the big sing-along “Okie From Muskogee.” Saturday, April 25 Tr a d i t i o n a l i s t D a n i e l Romano took the stage early-on Saturday, and those who caught his impressive 35-minute set will long remember his ability to mine the sonic territory first mined by the late Gram Parsons and celebrated here with a set of strong original songs. Nikki Lane was one of a number of young artists who impressed throughout the 3-day event. I caught her second performance staged on the Toyota TRD Pro Stage. Her authentic soprano was used in the service of striking outlaw country music gems, including “Man Up,” and “Sleep With a Stranger.” Nashville-based duo John & Jacob impressed from the moment that started performing on the big Mane Stage. With harmonies recalling the Everly Brothers and Dave Clark Five, “Ride With Me” and a cover of the aforementioned Everly Brothers “Wake Up Little Susie” highlighted the newcomer’s 35-minute set. Capping off an especially strong day of performances, both the legendary Gregg Allman and ZZ Top delivered sets that extended beyond their greatest hits (although the audience got all of those), and the performances each served to celebrate the unique careers of both groundbreaking artists. Sunday, April 26 Nashville provided more than its share of artists at this year’s Stagecoach, which amounted to a good thing. Singer-songwriter Andrew Combs performed a style of

Americana root’s rock that blended Jayhawks-styled tunefulness with Neil Young country folk. Highlights included the infectious “Foolin’” complete with three-part harmonies, and the beautiful “Please, Please, Please.” Logan Brill could well be one of the next big things in country music. The young singer - already a master at performing contemporary country - was especially expert when singing a potent Andrew Combs - Nashvilleversion of Dolly Parton’s classic Stagecoach on Sunday, Apr “Jolene.” Classic Southern rock outfit Outlaws unleashed rousing versions of the band’s bestknown songs, including a breezy “There Goes Another Love Song” and a 12-minute blistering version of “Green Nikki Lane - Country music singer-guitarist Nikki Lane was showGrass & High Tides.” The cased during two performances at Stagecoach on Saturday, April band also thrilled with the 25. Photo by Robert Kinsler fiery closer “ (Ghost), Riders in the Sky.” Eric Burdon and the Animals brought their unique and enduring style of classic-rock John & Jacob thrilled blending blues, Photo by Robert Kin psychedelic rock and R&B to the Palomino Stage, offering up one classic after another to the delight of an enthusiastic crowd. The opener “Don’t Bring Me Down,” a reworked (and reggae-tinged) “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” hard rocking “It’s My Life” and bluesstyled take on “The House of the Rising Miranda Lambert. An Intriguing Drama On Cognitive Robotics By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Chasing immortality by downloading one’s thoughts and memories into an everlasting human-shaped computer may sound like science fiction, but current research in robotics and artificial intelligence make it possible now. The challenge is to get past the “uncanny valley,” the discomfort-zone people experience when seeing electronic recreations of human beings that are not quite believable. Computers and robotic interaction in every form have been part of our society for some time now. The subject matter of cognitive robots playing an increasing role in our culture is not only intriguing, it now has captured the imagination of playwrights. In October last year I reviewed playwright Jordan Harrison’s take on the subject in the Mark Taper Forum production of “Marjorie Prime”, starring Lois Smith. San Diego Repertory Theatre has mounted a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere of “Uncanny Valley,” written by award-wining playwright Thomas Gibbons; performed in their Lyceum Space theatre. The intellectual think-piece, seamlessly directed by Jessica Bird, stars Rosina Reynolds and Nick Cagle in a riveting pas de deux involving avatars and their human creators. “Uncanny Valley” is the story of Claire (Reynolds), a

PhD neurobiologist and creator of “Project Julian” (Cagle) her technological robotic progeny. As the story unfolds, one gets the feeling that Claire who is coming to the end of her career is not that happy about the prospects of retirement with a husband rapidly slipping into dementia and an estranged daughter. She has been “living” with her creation Julian for a long time and the relationship is like that of a mother and her child. There are echoes of the Geppetto/Pinocchio dynamic of one wanting to become a real boy and the creator gaining a real live human as a son. In the opening scene we see only the head of Julian on top of Claire’s desk as if floating in space. We also witness the progress of Claire’s work scene by scene as Julian grows in physicality and intelligence; eventually becoming a full grown adult. As the “Julian Project” continues Julian increases his human/avatar persona, to the point where he and Claire now engage in various discussions as most normal friends would do. It’s a little surreal observing a machine and a human interacting as equals. One wonders if Julian is really capable of consciousness or feelings that have not been programmed into him. Cagle’s performance is absolutely astonishing in the early scenes. It’s a testament to Cagle’s talent as an actor that he flawlessly performs the physical demands of the role.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Palm Springs Walk of Stars honored the legendary Della Reese with the 384th star on April 26th. The Star was unveiled at 515 North Palm Canyon Dr. in front of hundreds of fans, friends and family. Speakers included Palm Springs councilwoman Ginny Foat and Della’s husband Franklin Lett who spoke for Lindsay Wagner, who was unable to attend due to a family emergency. Another speaker was the famous actress Diane Ladd. John Bolivar presented flowers to her and Susan Stafford also spoke at the event and read congratulatory letters from other celebrity friends. Della Reese is a singer, actress, author, a minister and winner of three Grammy, an Emmy and a Golden Globe award. Della was the first black woman to host her own TV show. Her co-star Roma Downey on the hit TV series, Touched by an Angel, gave a very emotional speech on behalf of Della. Roma lost her mother at age 10 and said she found another mother in Della. As a minister, Della married Roma Downey and her husband and baptized their first child.

Della Reese spoke and thanked everyone for being there. She said as a child her mother told her that God was always with her and to trust in him for everything. She has followed that advice throughout her life and career. Her career has taken on many forms as a singer, TV actress, Guest on many TV shows, nightclub performer and movie roles. She became a

Reynolds is not only a marvelous actor with tons of experience, she is also an excellent director which gives her an advantage when creating a character she has to perform. She sees her role and understands it from two points of view. In “Uncanny Valley” the on-stage chemistry between Reynolds and Cagle is just mesmerizing. From the pen of playwright Thomas Gibbons comes a lot of penetrating, sharp, words, along with fascinating concepts and ideas about the future of a society that has embraced a synergistic marriage between technology and human interaction. There

is not, however, a lot of action but one will never become bored, disengaged or driftaway with these two dynamic and gifted performers on stage. Gibbons has written a play whose dialogue has the ring of authenticity to it, along with a believable vision of what the future may hold for society. The highest compliment a director can receive is that the hands and fingerprints of the director are nowhere to be found. If one was to be picky, my only input would be to suggest that the learning curve concerning what Julian has accomplished in order to be ready for prime time performance be increased

from two weeks to at least two months. It just sounds more believable considering what hi-tech algorithms have to be introduced, checked, and tested. The creative team led by director Bird includes Scenic Designer Robin Sanford Roberts who provides a sterile, sort of futuristic look that is lighted by designer Kristin Swift Haynes; both, however, in ‘sync’ with the production. “Uncanny Valley” is an impressive production now on stage at San Diego Repertory Theatre that runs through May 10, 2015.

Vegas gears up ‘Concentric’ Security for Upcoming Megafight Continued from Page 1 ring. The hotel and police have responsibility for the arena and hotel, which is Las Vegas’ biggest, with 5,005 rooms. Police, along with state and federal agencies, are in charge outside - “all the way out to the airport, Interstate 15 and the neighborhoods,” Schofield said. “The overall goal is to maintain the integrity of the event,” Aguilar said. “Las Vegas is a brand. To protect the brand, you have to protect the event.” Fight nights haven’t always gone so smoothly. In 1993, “Fan Man” James Miller guided his powered parachute to land next to a Caesars Palace outdoor ring where Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe were brawling. Ringside fans and security pummeled Miller, who was arrested for the stunt. In 1996, rapper Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting after Mike Tyson knocked out Bruce Seldon at the MGM. In 1997, bedlam erupted inside and outside the ring when Tyson was disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield’s ears. Thousands of people stampeded through the MGM Grand hotel lobby.

Last year, a scuffle in the elbow-to-elbow crowd leaving a Mayweather-Marcos Maidana fight - and a loud noise that officials blame on a partition falling to the floor, not a gunshot - spurred a panicked stampede in a food court area outside the arena. Officials said about 50 people were treated for minor injuries. “We’ve had times when it doesn’t quite go according to plan,” Schofield acknowledged. “We’ve learned.” Officials won’t say much about the details of how they’ll protect the scene and the army of celebrities in town. But Deputy Clark County Fire Chief Erik Newman said about 300 firefighters in his department will be on duty or stand-by. “I think we’ll have the most millionaires and billionaires in one place in the country,” Newman said. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported last week that virtually all 150,000 hotel rooms in the city were sold for fight weekend. Las Vegas police have almost 2,500 sworn officers. They’ll get help this week from the Nevada Highway Patrol, neighboring

Henderson and North Las Vegas police, and federal agencies ranging from the FBI to the Department of Homeland Security. “We’re a community that knows how to handle large events,” Schofield said. “We do them a lot.” Indeed, Las Vegas draws 340,000 people for its annual New Year’s Eve fireworks party on the Strip, 200,000 to a weekend-long Electric Daisy Carnival and almost 120,000 for a NASCAR race. Tim Jeffery, vice president

of security for the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, said fight fans and tourists will notice lots of security officers in bright yellow-green shirts on pedestals, but won’t see behind-the-scenes preparation. Ticket-holders won’t be able to bring bags or backpacks and will pass through metal-detectors, Nevada Athletic Commission Executive Director Bob Bennett said. People without a fight ticket will be cleared out of the shopping area between the arena and

A Celebration of Life Hans Alfred Schroeder, 74, passed away on February 21, 2015, while at his residence in Yucca Valley, California. Hans was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on December 8, 1940, to Cornelius William Schroeder and Katherine Agnes Golob. Tom Mix was Hans’ Godfather, and Iron Eyes Cody was a Native American friend. His father worked circuses, carnivals, school assemblies and theatres with a trained dog act in the 30s and 40s, and the family worked as migrant workers from 1946 to 1961. The family settled in Spokane; Washington and Hans graduated from North Central High School in 1959. Graduated from the University of Southern California in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, Hans went on to graduate with a Juris Doctorate from West Los Angeles College of Law in 1972. His law work included being Legal Assistant to Alfred Bloomingdale Legal Department of the Diners’ Club from 1965 to 1972, and Legal Assistant to Joseph Aidlin, Chief Legal Council to Magma Power in 1973, working with stock corporations, such as Geothermal Steam Wells International, who developed alternative energy sources. With many years experience in real estate development and property management, Hans’ most-recent efforts included developing a fine art gallery in

casino. Afterward, ticket-holders will be directed out of the arena through the closest door to their seat. Newman, the deputy fire chief, said he sees after-fight events and overcrowding at clubs and hotels as the biggest security challenge. “There will be a lot of people outside,” Bennett said. “The access to alcohol and partying around town could create some turmoil.”

DVL Softball Season Down to Wire LA QUINTA – Just six games remain for the Desert Valley League-leading La Quinta Blackhawks softball team but the season is far from over. The Blackhawks (6-0 DVL, 12-0 Overall) have not had a traditional, run-through-theschedule, 20-plus-win type of season in 2015 that has become the yearly norm at La Quinta High School. Yet, with true hearts of champions, DeDe Grutz’ girls are still, narrowly in first place with an undefeated DVL record. La Quinta has a gimme against the last-place Xavier Prep Saints (0-8 DVL, 1-14 Overall) this week (Tuesday * and Friday). Next week, the Blackhawks have another gift on the schedule, the sixth-place Cathedral City Lions (2-6 DVL, 10-10 Overall) before setting up series with the rival

Palm Desert Aztecs to decide the league champions. The Aztecs (7-1 DVL, 6-16 Overall) road to the final series with La Quinta is not as easy as the Blackhawks. Palm Desert head coach James Serven’s squad has only two games before the matchup with the seventime defending DVL champion Blackhawks – against the hungry, second-place Coachella Valley Arabs. The Aztecs were undefeated and cruising in league, up until a 9-8 upset last week to the struggling Indio Rajahs knocked Palm Desert off its month-long pedestal. The Aztecs were leading 8-6 heading into the seventh and final inning of the game. After closing the gap with a run to make it 8-7, Janay Garcia hit a clutch, two-run

single to win the game, 9-8, in walk-off fashion. “Both teams battled and never gave up,” Coach Serven said in an interview. “It was a very exciting game and congrats to Indio. Now, if Coachella Valley sweeps this week, the Aztecs will have virtually no shot at the DVL title, figuring La Quinta takes care of business against Xavier Prep and Cathedral City. A split would guarantee a tie for first with the Blackhawks. After losing to La Quinta earlier in the season, even if Coachella Valley sweeps the Aztecs, the best-case scenario would be finishing in a tie for first with La Quinta. the season finale will take place Coachella Valley, follow Dan on On May 12, Palm Desert at Palm Desert High School. Tribeca Film Offers Insight Into The Soul Of Stand Up Comedy

Larry David

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic What exactly is stand-up comedy and how does it work? Can anybody do it? Where can one go to learn how to do it? Fair questions to ask. But you might be surprised by some of the answers its practitioners share in this 95 minute, tell-itlike-it-is, documentary. Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hanks, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, Judd Apatow, Lisa Kudrow, Larry David and Jon Favereau are among many famous funny people featured in this hilarious twist on the age-old truth: misery loves company. You will enjoy the in-depth, candid interviews with some of the most revered comedy greats who each share their unique path and a life devoted to making strangers laugh. First, all comedy is in the eye of the beholder. Whether their jokes and routines hit home or not the comedian and the gig goes on. Some score and live to perform a again, perhaps laying a giant egg the next time or bomb out and flame out altogether only to wake up in a Walmart store as a greeter or selling shoes in Topeka, Kansas. Only the tough and the talented can survive. “Misery Loves Comedy”, written by Kevin Pollak and John Vorhaus, is directed by Kevin Pollak, a former standup comic himself, so he knows whereof these top comic artists speak. And speak they do on a myriad of topics and subjects. The first question asked by interviewer Kevin Pollak is: “Are emotionally questionable people drawn to stand-up or are certain individuals drawn in by the lifestyle that is opened up to them?” More than 60 of America’s top professional comedians participated in the making of the film. They open up their private lives and family histories allowing filmmaker Pollak to penetrate their protective shields and safety zones. Each artist brings a different take on www.desertstarweekly.com

being a professional comedian. It’s very illuminating as well as entertaining. A great many of them say they were definitely influenced by their dads or funny parents growing up. The road to becoming a professional comedian is one of ups and downs. Most of them are high energy individuals, who release their energy with lots of gestures and idiosyncratic touching of their faces or scratching their necks or heads. Then there are those who are devoid of all such behavior. Our terrifically gifted comedy people come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities. There is something for everyone to appreciate and enjoy. There are performing highs when they have their audience in their hands and are controlling every moment while up on the stage. In the Tom Hanks segment, he says the adrenaline rush he got when he was performing stand-up was probably similar to what crystal meth users must get. They also need the bounce-back from the audience to spur them to go further in their routines while they’re “really cooking” on stage. “No one really knows what we go through to make our audiences laugh” says Greg Proops, “You know the childish behavior, the insecurity, the gaping hole that needs to be filled with laughter from other people. That’s what drives a lot of us”. They’re sort of like a family who need to stick together. Some admit to being self-centered. Others say, the comedy business is like a familyowned business. Although they are “family members” toiling in the “family business”, they’re still highly competitive with one another. In Lewis Black’s segment he says before you can become a comic, you have to watch yourself die.” Of course, he’s referring to the times when nobody understands your act or why you’re doing it, and the

times when the boo-birds come out, and they do. Those are the moments that try all comedians’ souls. The overriding question concerning stand-up comedians is: do they have to miserable to be funny? And the answer is maybe not miserable, but perhaps, slightly annoyed.

Maybe that’s why there are so few professional comedians and so many individuals who think they are funny when they’re drinking. If you’re a comedy junkie who can’t get enough of watching or listening to comedians live, die, or pour their hearts out on stage, then this 95 minute documentary

film “Comedy Loves Misery” is for you. It’s a master class on the art of humor that reveals the comedian’s rare ability to help us understand life as only they can. It screens at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs, beginning May 8, 2015.
