Heritage Festival By Bruce Montgomery The Heritage Festival 2014 was held at the Coachella Valley History Museum in Indio on Saturday, March 29, 2014. The Festival is a celebration of the rich history of the early significant cultures that led to the settling and development of the Coachella Valley, including the Cahuilla, Mexican-American, Anglo,
Black, Armenian and Japanese. Entertainment in the Date Garden included the Second Baptist Mass Choir, the Pennyroyal Players, Faultline Men’s Quartet, Ballet Folklorio Sol Del Desierto and Yo Yo Champ Bill DeBoisblanc. Children’s games included horseshoes, jump rope, hopscotch and croquet. In the Date Museum
pioneer, family members presented their personal stories, and junior historians portrayed a number of famous persons from the past. There were activities inside, and outside the Schoolhouse Museum – a big hit was Polly’s washing outside the schoolhouse, where children learned how pioneers washed off clothes in a bucket, dried them with a hand wringer, and
By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert/Indian Wells, CA. The highly anticipated new baby giraffe was born at The Living Desert in the early hours of Friday, March 28th at 2:52 a.m. The baby boy is a healthy calf bonding with his mom Dadisi. Dadisi’s pregnancy was about 15 months, the typical gestational period for a giraffe. Weighing 128 pounds and 5-foot 9-inches tall, the baby was standing up within an hour of his birth. The baby will now nurse for 9 to 12 months, and begin eating foliage at about four
months, while doubling his size in the first year of his life. And like humans with unique fingerprints to every individual, the new baby giraffe has his own spot-like markings since no two giraffes have the same pattern. “We closely watched Dadisi’s progress through her pregnancy and are proud to welcome and introduce a thriving baby giraffe to the community,” said Allen Monroe, President/CEO of The Living Desert. The birth day “guess the arrival date and time” contest winner will be announced soon.
The winner of the contest will receive a private giraffe feeding experience for a total of eight people, a family membership to The Living Desert for one year, and a commemorative giraffe plush. The Living Desert is now creating an exciting E-Bay naming contest and planning a baby shower, with more details to follow soon. Visit www.LivingDesert.org. The Living Desert is located at: 47900 Portola Avenue, Palm Desert, CA 92260.

hung them on the fence to dry. Scattered around the grounds were multicultural food vendors, a blacksmith demonstrating his craft, local artists displaying their work and representatives from other area museums, including General Patton Museum and the historic Cabot Yerxa Museum in Desert Hot Springs. It was an enjoyable time of
learning the personal colorful histories of pioneer families and taking a peek at early desert life around the turn of the last century. Notable local leaders attending the event included Indio former mayor and current councilman Glenn Miller and V Manuel Perez, California State Assemblyman.

Magic Johnson was to be the guest speaker, but at the last minute had to cancel due to a family emergency. Luckily, Mr. Robert Griffin III accepted the last minute request to fill in as the guest speaker. Mr. Griffin is a Heisman Trophy winner, and All American Quarterbacks and even a Pro Bowler. He is affectionately known as RG3 by the NFL players and press. The event started with a cocktail hour and a huge silent auction. The Guests were directed to the ballroom for dinner and live auction. A Prayer started the dinner, and a video presentation was shown telling about Desert Christian Academy and its achievements and goals with Debee Scott, Head of School as a spokeswoman in the video. Raise your Paddle, brought in thousands of dollars that benefited the Tuition Assistance program that enables students to get a Desert Christian Academy education. A conversation with Robert Griffin III was emceed by Chaplain, Kirk Scott. Mr. Griffin brought several personal items to be auctioned off to benefit the Academy and its programs. Mr. Griffin also bought a Puppy for over $2,200 at the live auction. Griffin answered questions and shared his story of success and faith with the guests. Hundreds of guests filled the ballroom to hear his story. The Desert Christian Academy has won the Coachella Valley WORLDQUEST contest four straight years and will be headed to Washington DC to compete again this year. This is a huge academic achievement for the School. The Academy strives to empower the Mind and engage the Soul.

Vests Save K-9s Lives as they Protect
By Desert Star Staff A German Shepherd named Kilo was shot multiple times during a gun battle in Florida between police and a man suspected of shooting at officers earlier in the night. Fortunately for Kilo, he was wearing a protective vest, which saved his life. Unfortunately, thousands of other K-9s officers across the country perform their duties without proper protective wear, putting them in harm’s way. Bullet and stab protective vests cost around $1,000 each and many departments simply do not have the means to outfit their dogs. PetArmor(r), known for its products that protect pets
from fleas and ticks, is helping to ensure more K-9s are protected while in the line of duty. Through a yearlong partnership with Vested Interest in K-9s, PetArmor(r) is providing funding for bullet and stab protective vests for law enforcement teams throughout the United States. “These dogs are out 30 feet in front of us and need these vests,” said Officer Vinnie Curcio, with the Jupiter, Fla., Police Department, which is one of the police departments benefiting from the donation. “They’re leading us into dark,
wooded areas after some of the most violent people.” Police forces in most major cities use police dogs to track criminals, sniff out illegal materials, search buildings, and do other jobs human police officers can’t do as well as a dog can. Additionally, their sense of smell is tens of thousands of times more sensitive than that of humans, making them ideal for their duties. Beyond their sense of smell, successful police dogs have exceptional intelligence and strength. Most police dogs
are male, and are frequently left unneutered so that they maintain their natural aggression. This aggression must be kept in check with thorough and rigorous training. The most popular breeds used as police dogs are German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherds, and occasionally mixes of these breeds. Other breeds used include Bloodhounds for detection and scent work, and Labrador Retrievers for narcotics and explosives detection. “Police K-9 units provide
an invaluable service to their community and deserve the same kind of protection as their human counterparts,” said Sandy Marcal, founder of Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. “Thanks to PetArmor(r), many more police dogs will be protected from harm while they protect their neighborhoods and towns.” For more information on PetArmor(r) product offerings, visit www.petarmor.com. Additional information on Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. can be found on their website, www. vik9s.org/.

Short-Term Rentals, Generated $272 Million By Desert Star Staff COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. – March 27 – In California’s Coachella Valley, residents and local tourism economies are enjoying the enormous economical benefits of shortterm rentals, according to a new study commissioned by the Short Term Rental Advocacy Center (STRAC). In the Coachella Valley, short-term rentals generated $272 million in overall economic activity in 2013 with $216.5 million of that activity attributable to visitor spending on short-term rentals and related on food, retail, recreation, transportation and other expenses, according to the study by TXP Inc. For every $100 a traveler spent on lodging; they spent an additional $69 on food, $24 on local transportation, $48 on arts, entertainment, and recreation activities, and $59 on retail shopping. The study also found shortterm rental activity created 2,539 local jobs, primarily in restaurants and bars and in the arts, entertainment, retail and
recreation sectors throughout Riverside County. Beyond the $72.2 million in direct spending on short period rentals, that activity has a multiplying effect on the localized economy in the form of increased wages, which are spent in the local community. TXP’s study looked at short-term rental listings of Airbnb, HomeAway and FlipKey in the Coachella Valley and surrounding Riverside County. In 2013, those companies had a combined 265,000 nights booked across 7,754 properties listed in the area. The average Coachella Valley short-term

rental user visited the area for 9.1 nights per stay, with an average of 4.4 people in their party. “With its natural beauty, chic boutiques, luxury spas and rocking music festivals, California’s Coachella Valley attracts a wide range of visitors with diverse interests and budgets,” said Jon Hockenyos, president of TXP and an economic expert that has conducted scores of regional economical impact studies. “Short-term rentals are a asset in the Coachella Valley’s tourism portfolio, providing diversity in
accommodations and ultimately creating thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of tax revenue in a community where tourism is an increasingly important driver of the local economy.” The region has become a popular travel destination due to its annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which attracted nearly 300,000 visitors in 2013, more than ten times the attendance in 1999. Due to quickly increasing demand, the study concluded that short-term rentals are a valuable part of the accommodation’s market in the Coachella Valley.

Please do join me in this celebration of my 86th birthday and become my friend). Scientists leading teams of undergraduate students at New York University (NYU) succeeded this year in chopping, splicing and manipulating the genetic structure of the DNA of yeast to craft the world’s first artificial chromosome. Chromosomes are the tiny thread-like structures made of tightly packed DNA that are now known to be the genetic blueprint for their organisms. This research paves the way for producing new medicines and bio-fuels from life forms with artificial chromosomes made by humans. Starting with commercially available snippets of DNA, a team led by Jef Boeke of NYU’s Langone Medical Center, stitched together ever-larger DNA fragments, then added them to yeast cells. In making the soupedup yeast chromosome, the researchers altered roughly 15% of the original chromosomes, deleting sections that seemed unnecessary. Then they spliced www.desertstarweekly.com
in bits of DNA that allowed them to scramble the yeast’s genes on command. Such scrambling generated a batch of yeast with enormous genetic variation, allowing researchers to fish out the strains that grow best or fastest or have gained a particular ability. Another life extension news item of note for March 2014 is the formation of the Human Longevity company with 70 million dollars in original financing. This company is headed by molecular biologist Craig Venter. In 2010, Dr. Venter’s team made what was then called the world’s first synthetic life form, a tiny bacteria. This work occupied 20 scientists for more than 10 years at an estimated cost of 40 million dollars. Venter, the primary author of the report detailing the findings, described the bacteria as “the first self-replicating species we’ve had on the planet whose parent is a computer.” Other scientists were similarly enthusiastic. “This is a tour de force and a landmark paper ... that is akin to Jurassic Park or Frankenstein,” said Dr. Anthony C. Forster, a molecular biologist at Vanderbilt University. Forster is a leading expert in the field of artificial life forms but not involved in Venter’s research. Although most scientists
overwhelmingly praised the achievement, reported online by the journal “Science,” some environmental groups warned against unforeseen consequences. Friends of the Earth called on governmental agencies to begin regulating synthetic biology experiments. The technology watchdog Action Group on Erosion, Technology and Concentration, or ETC Group, a Canadian organization concerned about the effects of new technologies on marginalized peoples, went even further, calling for a moratorium on the work. “The government and society in general are not ready for selfreplicating artificial life forms,” said ETC Executive Director Pat Mooney. “There hasn’t been adequate monitoring of this while it was being developed. It’s being born into this environment where there is no real regulation and no understanding of it.” Religious critics condemned Venter’s research by saying that Venter was playing God by reorganizing the materials of life. One environmental organization warned that artificial organisms could escape and cause environmental havoc or be turned into biological weapons. Venter became a very controversial public figure in the 1990s when his former
company, Celera Genomics, succeeded in determining the sequence or location of genes in the human chromosome during a race to do so with an organization sponsored by the U.S. government. In the course of this pioneering work Venter applied for patents on more than 300 genes. These patents raised concerns that his company might claim intellectual rights to the building blocks of life. The U.S. Supreme Court later ruled that these genes could not be patented. ‘Delivery Man’ Delivers Heartfelt Comedy
“Delivery Man” is an endearing comedy about a middle-aged underachiever, David Wozniak (Vince Vaughn), who works with his two brothers in their father’s meat business. David is the company’s delivery man who soon discovers he has delivered a lot more than meat during his lifetime. Twenty years earlier, in order to raise money to send his parents on a dream trip of a lifetime, he donated to a fertility clinic, and as a result he unknowingly fathered 533 children. The donations were made anonymously, but now 142 of his offspring want to find their biological father known only by his code name Starbuck... When a representative from the clinic suddenly shows up at his apartment with photos and information on each of the 142 adult children in question, David is shocked and horrified to discover that he is definitely an overachiever of grand proportions. David can’t process this overload of information. In fact, he is dating a woman he loves, who is pregnant with what he thinks will be his first child. At this point, he doesn’t feel capable of caring for one child much less 142. Panic sets in. What will his girlfriend think of him? How will his family react and what will happen if such a bizarre story leaked out to the media as it surely would if his identity were exposed David’s friend and truly bumbling lawyer advises against making any contact, but curiosity causes David to look inside the envelope where he discovers that one of his sons is a noted basketball player on a local team. He and his lawyer pal go to a local game and

cheer the player on just as any proud papa would do. The comedy takes shape and warmth as David decides to contact some more of the young adults he has sired without ever revealing his true identity. At this point, he sees himself more as a guardian angel in their lives rather than as their biological father. Soon David, a warmhearted lovable guy, finds himself emotionally drawn to each child he locates,
and they bond with him as well. Unfortunately, he is afraid to reveal his true identity to his newly acquired family, not only for legal reasons but for his protection as well. The story starts off slowly at first, but once David makes contact with his newly discovered children the film takes off. Writer, director Ken Scott makes it clear how important a biological father is in the life of a child, not just for

health and genetic information but for love, support and connection as well. This is where the film excels. “Delivery Man” won’t ever win an Oscar, but it may win, or at least warm, your heart Bonus features on Blu-ray and Digital: “Building Family” which explores the challenges and fun of creating this modern family. Additionally, learn how the 142 young actors cast as biological siblings bonded both
during and after production. “Vince Vaughn: Off the Cuff” features Vaughn delivering comedy improvisations. Bloopers and a Deleted Scene are on Blue-ray, Digital and DVD. “Delivery Man” is rated PG13 for thematic elements, sexual content, some drug material, brief violence and language.

Soroptimist House of Hope Receives $25,000

By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, CA. – A $25,000 grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation will help local women seeking sobriety through the Soroptimist House of Hope (SHOH). The funding comes from the Coachella Valley Spotlight, a partnership between the Berger

We strive to assist
clients with the individualized support, they need to combat substance abuse and lead selfsufficient, productive lives.” Since 1981, SHOH has helped more than 3000 women through its comprehensive and effective 45-day social model program, which includes housing, 12-step meetings,
therapeutic activities, structured daily household duties, and life skills workshops. “The Soroptimist House of Hope is improving people’s lives,” said Christopher McGuire, Vice President of Programs for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. “Not only are the clients’ lives changed,
By Desert Star Staff The teachers and students of “The Academy” will host History Day on Friday, April 4th, and all are gearing up for this awesome event! The event is a scholarly enrichment program for students, their families and The Academy community, providing an experience truly unique to this school. History Day includes fun crafts and history from our Third/ Fourth-grade class grade class highlighting early California Native American culture. Second-grade students will be dressing up and sharing information about the Thirteen Colonies. First graders will be painting a portrait of Abe
Lincoln, and our Kindergartners will be dressed as “I wish I could be a _______when I grow up.” In addition, Preschool and TK will be singing some lively patriotic songs, and there will be more singing and skits performed by students attending after school dance and theatre classes. The students are excited, especially the Fifth graders, who will be “performing” solo acts as a character from history. This event is a wonderful opportunity for friends, community leaders and potential Academy parents to see our students in living history and highlight the commitment to excellence that The Academy
embodies. Our own students will have the opportunity to see all the presentations in the morning. Then, at 10:00 AM, the fun begins as parents, invited guests, and church parishioners arrive for first class edutainment! As a reward for all of their hard work and preparation to make this event successful, the students will enjoy a minimum day at the conclusion of the program. The Academy is a small, Christian, co-educational school for students’ age two years through grade 7 (grade 8 to begin during the 2014-15 school year). It provides a supportive yet challenging environment, with a strong core curriculum, the best

Words of Wisdom from Benjamin Carson, M.D.
By pamela price The Indian Wells Town Hall lecture series, speaks for itself with a stellar cast of guest speakers who have instant name recognition. To name of a few alumni, General Colin M. Powell Ret., Margaret Thatcher, William F. Buckley, Jr., Dan Rather, Charlie Rose, HM Queen Noor of Jordan and Henry Kissinger. To that five-star list, Indian Wells can now add Benjamin Carson, M. D. the renowned Pediatric Neurosurgeon, inspirational storyteller and New York Times best-selling author that does not mince words. That was made clear on March 24th as Dr. Carson the final guest in this year’s season of four guest speakers made a blunt, but brave statement to the audience of over 1200 guests, that “the Affordable Health Care Act is the worst think to happen to this country since slavery! With those words, Dr. Carson took a rapt audience on a verbal journey of American power, politics and patriotism. “Our country does not resemble what it was 50 years ago,”
he said, as the “depth of knowledge today is very poor. He urged that “we, the people must do our due diligence” reminding the audience that “ we were once educated people but not now. We need a ‘can do’ attitude not a. What can you do for me attitude.? His advice for adults and the youths in the audiences is to “speak about what we believe.” Dr. Carson’s past proves his point. He was brought up by a single, working mother, who was married at age thirteen. While she lacked an education, she had high expectations for her son, Benjamin, who was a troubled student while in elementary school. His mother demanded book reports and excellent grades from Benjamin until he turned the corner and took his education seriously. This was good medicine for the Youth Town Hall, and 600 students from 22 area high schools participating in a reception prior to Dr. Carson’s 6 PM lecture in the Ballroom at the Renaissance Hotel in Indian Wells. This
was a golden opportunity for student ambassadors selected from participating schools to interact with the guest speakers by asking challenging questions. Among the schools invited to participate in this program are Palm Valley School, Cathedral City High School and Xavier College Prep. Among this year’s 13 Youth, ambassadors are Grace Osborn, La Quinta High School, Alexandria Chasen, Rancho Mirage High School and Alexis Garcia, Coachella Valley High School. Dr. Carson, an inspirational speaker and today one of the most respected neurosurgeons in the world mesmerized the audience for a full hour. There’s more to his story in his best-selling book, America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great. For further information, www.DesertTownHall.org or (760) 610 2852. Inquire about season tickets for 2015 and notification of next years line up ( even before media notification!). Speakers are selected who “lead, inspire and provoke thought.”

“Nunset Boulevard” By Gary Daigneault Theatre 29 and Director K a t h r y n F e r g u s o n a re announced casting selections for the spring musical production of Theatre 29s 2014 seasons, the most recent offering from the audience pleasing “Nunsense” series, “Nunset Boulevard”. NUNSET BOULEVARD follows the newest exploits of The Little Sisters of Hoboken, who have been invited to perform at the Hollywood Bowl. They are thrilled at the prospect until they arrive and realize that they are booked into the Hollywood Bowl-A-Rama — a bowling alley with a cabaret lounge — and not the famed ‘Bowl’ they were imagining. Things do not go as planned, as The Sisters must contend with announcements from the bowling alley public address system as well as the activity on the lanes. However, The Sisters catch wind of the fact that the movie producer, James Todd, is across the street auditioning for roles in his new movie musical about the life of Dolores Hart, the famous movie star who became a nun. The Sisters, thinking they are naturals for parts, race off to audition during their show’s intermission. Will Hoboken lose The Sisters to the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown?” In the role of Reverend Mother, Sr. Mary Regina, the no-nonsense Mother Superior with a star streak, is being played
by Marty Neider. As her second in command, the strict (but fun) Sr. Mary Hubert is being played by Gloria Garner. In the crowd favorite role of the daffy Sr. Mary “Amnesia” Paul is Theatre 29 newcomer Pamela Crane. Rounding out the principal cast, in the role of the loveable “ballerina” nun, Sr. Mary Leo, is Mandi Pushkar. In the supporting roles of the “Doo Wop” sisters are Katie VanSumeren, Amanda Winters and Jasmine Shaffer, who also is Sr. Mary Amnesia’s understudy. Tickets can be purchased now online at www.theatre29. org, through the box office at 760-361-4151, through Theatre 29’s Facebook page “Buy Tickets” window, by downloading the WALLETINI app from, I-Tunes App store or Google Play or by scanning the QR code with your mobile device on production posters appearing at businesses across the Morongo Basin. “NUNSET BOULEVARD” will run Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 PM beginning April 24th – May 25th, with two Sunday Matinees May 4 & 18 at 2:30 pm. Tickets are anticipated to sell quickly, reserve your seats now! $12 General admission, $10 Seniors and Military w/ID, $8 Students. Theatre 29 is located at 73637 Sullivan Rd, just a quarter block west of Adobe Rd at Sullivan.

ASYMCs ‘Angels’ For an Evening By lisa Johnson WASHINGTON – Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Kevin Toland, a 32-year-old Fleet Marine Force corpsman from Atlanta, Ga., and 26-year-old Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Michael Marchante, of Murrieta, Calif., were two of the five ASYMC ‘Angel’ honorees. Keynote speaker, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. James A. “Sandy” Winnefeld, Jr., spoke of the unselfish bravery these men and women displayed while performing their duties without regard to their own safety. “The honorees tonight will tell you that they were just ‘doing their jobs, said Winnefeld. “They did their jobs instinctively, and under some extraordinary circumstances.” The ASYMC ‘Angels’ represent each of the five service branches of the U.S. military, and were chosen by their respective services. More than 300 guests, including senior military and enlisted service members, gathered at the Four Seasons in Washington, D.C. to honor the 2014 recipients at the 8th annual event. “There’s no higher honor than honoring our heroes,” said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert. “Our military is blessed to have the very finest medical team, and our honorees tonight have displayed extraordinary valor, expert care and selflessness.” When an improvised

explosive device (IED) hit a local bazaar in Afghanistan in 2012, Toland’s instincts and training kicked in. He took immediate action and triaged and treated patients. His actions saved many lives. “I am honored to accept on behalf of all the other corpsmen who have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Toland. “I’m really grateful for the opportunity to represent the
hospital corps.” Marchante, who has twice deployed to Afghanistan, was recognized for performing lifesaving medical care on the battlefield. While under active fire, used his body to shield an already severely wounded Soldier in Afghanistan from further injury. “To be recognized tonight is a huge honor,” said Marchante. “My wife and parents are extremely proud of my service.”

The YMCA first served the military more than 150 years ago during the Civil War. Its armed services department developed later into the ASYMCA that still serves today. Each year, the ASYMCA honors medics, corpsmen and pararescuemen for providing lifesaving medical treatment on the battlefield. This event is the only event which specifically recognizes the frontline actions
of military medical personnel. “These are the men and women who risk their lives each day, so our service members make it home to their families,” said Mike Landers, president and chief executive officer of ASYMCA. “Recognizing them for their sacrifices and tremendous sense of valor is one small way to demonstrate how grateful we are for their service.” Visit www.asymca.org.
By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA. – An award-winning magician who has performed around the world for audiences, including celebrities and royalty; Matthew Dowden is a charming singer/ entertainer who as well has an incredible sleight-of-hand. Erin Quill, a member of the original Broadway cast of the Tony-winning musical “Avenue Q,” is already wellknown to Palm Springs from her four consecutive yearly performances at “Sparkle!” which, like Celebrity Doodles, as well benefits Desert AIDS Project. So, it’s sure to be fun on Saturday, April 5 when these two talents join forces to host the festivities at the 2014 Celebrity Doodles, beginning at 6:00 PM. Just to be safe, you might want to buckle up for this flight-of-fancy from the Air Museum because with celebrities like Susan Anton, Kaye Ballard, Taylor Dayne, Jack Jones, Ruta Lee, Suzanne Somers and hubby Alan Hamel, Ann Walker – and
a few surprises – in attendance, it’s anybody’s guess what might happen. While you’re thinking about your evening there, why not plan to take a celebrity home with you? What about Olivia Newton-John or Kylie Minogue? Vanessa Williams? Alternatively, perhaps Bob Mackie or Dr. Phil is more to your taste. OK, possibly you won’t take home an actual celebrity … but you can certainly bid on a piece of artwork they’ve produced especially for the occasion, whether it’s the classic doodled cocktail napkin or one of the more detailed pieces that some celebs have submitted. The doodles are still coming in, but you can take an online peek at some of them already received – like Lily Tomlin’s artistic musing on her role as “Ernestine, the telephone operator” — when you head over to www.celebritydoodles. com. While you’re there, make sure to purchase your tickets too, so that you don’t miss out on any of the fun when this event takes flight.

s p o rt s Rajahs Ready To Compete For DVL Title dvl BaseBall Roundup By daniel maRinelli
INDIO – The Indio High School Rajahs (0-0 in DVL, 9-3 Overall) had won five consecutive games until they were outmatched by the Palos Verdes Peninsula High School Panthers (0-0 in Bay League, 11-1 Overall) in the 52nd annual Coachella Valley Rotary Tournament last Wednesday. In front of 100 onlookers at Shadow Hills High School, junior Juan Siqueiros took the mound looking forward to continuing the string of brilliant pitching that had carried the Rajahs to the tournament final. Through the first four innings, the side-armor, Siqueiros, had thrown less than 45 pitches, allowed one hit and no runs to a Panthers team that scores around seven runs a game. In the bottom of the fifth, however, Siqueiros gave up a quick, double and single. With two Palos Verdes Peninsula runners on base, late in the game – clinging to a 1-0 lead – Indio head coach Mark Brenner elected to stay with his starting lefty. “We were at the end of our pitching rotation,” said Coach Brenner. “There were no signs from him to pull him out of the game. What I saw from him was that he wasn’t tired, he was still locating well.” Siqueiros gave up a squeeze bunt, followed by three singles, and quickly; the Panthers had taken a 4-1 lead by the end of the inning. Siqueiros gave up three more runs in the latter half of the sixth inning, and due to Indio’s lack of offense, the Panthers lead grew to a seemingly insurmountable 7-1 – the eventual closing score. The Panthers ended up winning the game without much of a fight from the Rajahs in their last atbat. “They just did a excellent job adjusting,” said Coach Brenner of the Panthers offense. “You could see they were staying back and going the other way, and the hits were falling for them – that’s what good teams do. Two innings was what got to (Siqueiros).” To be fair, Indio was missing an important player. The injuries to leadoff hitter and starting shortstop Nate Munoz forced Coach Brenner to rule him out of the game against Palos Verdes Peninsula – a big loss for the Indio. “Any time you take one of the top players out of the lineup, it’s going to affect you,” said Coach Brenner, “but that’s when other guys got to step up. You know we preach team baseball, so if one guy goes out, somebody has to step in and do the job.” Even so, the Rajahs only managed to get five hits against the Panthers. Three of the hits came from Steven Cuevas and Siqueiros – starting players whose offense is relied upon every game.

Their brief hitting drought may have cost them the championship but Indio’s second-place finish in the Rotary Tournament meant advancing farther than DVL title contenders and fellow tournament participants: the defending DVL champions Palm Desert High School Aztecs and the La Quinta High School Blackhawks. Despite advancing passed their league rivals in the Rotary Tournament, Coach Brenner believes the Rajahs entire non conference success – not just a tournament – has given his squad the tools to challenge the Aztecs and the Blackhawks for a DVL title. “We used the first 12 games to prepare us for the DVL,” said Coach Brenner, “this is just the end of it. “What we take from this effort – being 9-3 – is we are ready. This team competes to the very end; they play baseball the right way – they play clean.” Off to their hottest start since 2012, the Rajahs have the best non-conference record among DVL teams, and have emerged as a league favorite to win the DVL. “We are ready,” said Coach Brenner, “I have the utmost confidence, we are ready to go in the DVL and compete for the DVL title.” The Rajahs began DVL play on Tuesday against the Blackhawks at La Quinta High School. On Friday, Indio welcomes La Quinta to Indio High School. Friday’s game starts at 6:30 pm. April 2, 2014

No Indication Marijuana Raises Crime Rate By Desert Star Staff Enemies of marijuana use have warned that legalizing the drug for recreational use would incite a crime epidemic, turning users into drug addicts and morphing dispensaries into malevolent drug dens. A new report, though, seems to debunk that rhetoric. Medical cannabis was first legalized in 1996, other west coast states in 1998, and since then has become commonplace throughout the US, with many of the states where medical marijuana is still illegal currently considering legislation that would make it so. When it became clear that making the drug available for patients stricken with cancer, glaucoma, and dozens of other maladies would not lead to rioting in the streets, cannabis advocates began pressuring state lawmakers to make it legal for recreational use. Opponents have long maintained that would be a mistake, claiming that marijuana is a “gateway” drug which exposes users to harder drugs like cocaine, heroin, and the like. The rationale is that those people will eventually become so strung out that they spend all of their money on the drugs and eventually resort to criminal behavior to feed their habit. Drug War proponents have also said that medical dispensaries will
attract criminals hoping to take advantage of petty cash supplies from both the business and its customers. An analysis of crime data in states where medical cannabis has been legalized has found that none of those apocalyptic premonitions have come true. The journal PLOS One published a nationwide study Wednesday which, upon examining data recorded between 1990 and 2006, determined that crime throughout the US dropped. In fact, the eleven states that authorized medical cannabis during that time saw no major increase in any of the following categories: homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, or vehicle theft. There may even be cause for excitement in the findings. Robert G. Morris, Michael TenEyck, JC Barnes, Tomislav V. Kovandzic – researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas who compiled their results from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report data – wrote that declines in homicide and assault could be a sign of things to come as marijuana becomes more pervasive. “While it is important to remain cautious when interpreting these findings as evidence that MML reduces crime, these results do fall in line with recent evidence and they conform to the longstanding
notion that marijuana legalization may lead to a reduction in alcohol use due to individuals substituting marijuana for alcohol,” the wrote, as quoted by Emily Badger of the Washington Post. “Given the relationship between alcohol and violent crime, it may turn out that substituting marijuana for alcohol leads to minor reductions in violent crimes that can be detected at state level.”

The researchers controlled for other societal factors that could have an effect on crime numbers, including employment, education, poverty rates and other possible influences. They admitted that the data is merely that: data, and does not point to medicinal cannabis as a definitive answer to crime. “Perhaps the more likely explanation of the current findings is that the [medical marijuana] laws reflect behaviors and attitudes that have been established in those societies,” they wrote. “If their attitudes and behaviors reflect a more tolerant populace that is less likely to infringe on one another’s personal rights, we are unlikely to expect an increase in crime and might even anticipate a slight reduction in personal crimes.” While there is not a comprehensive set of data
ITS
covering the years since 2006, Colorado authorities are not sure what to anticipate in the future now that marijuana has been legalized for recreational use in their state. A number of cannabis dispensaries have been burglarized since the new law went into effect. “Everyone in the industry is having nightmares,” Michael Elliot, executive director of the Marijuana Industry Group, a Colorado lobby group, told NBC News. “It’s only a matter of time before someone gets shot.” The Denver Police Department estimated that approximately 17 percent of marijuana retail stores were robbed in 2009. It’s too early to tell if that number has grown or shrunk in the time since, but at the time 20 percent of liquor stores and 34 percent of banks had been robbed.
