Coachella Valley welcomed California’s biggest country music festival By Robert Kinsler While headliners such as Luke Bryan and Eric Church thrilled the masses on the Mane Stage at Stagecoach over the weekend, most of the real magic played out in the Palomino and Mustang tents over the weekend. Here on full display was the genre’s roots that these days seem a world removed from the heavier rock and pop feel of so many mainstream country acts.
Here are some of the highlights of the action I caught in Indio at California’s Country Music Festival. Friday, April 25 N a s h v i l l e ’s Howlin’ Brothers come anchored in a blend of old-time blues and bluegrass, but here at Stagecoach that approach was delivered with a good helping of indie rock, an attack that attracted an enthusiastic crowd to the Mustang tent. The trio’s 40-minute
turn was solid all around, and it didn’t hurt that the multitasking outfit (several members often perform on different instruments at once) has an experimental and fun way of performing originals and classics. With a new album, Trouble, set to land May 13, there were all kinds of fresh selections to share, my favorite being the pretty “Tennessee Blues.” That song, featuring fiddle player Ian Craft on vocals, featured a dancing
PALM SPRINGS, Ca. - Monday evening District Attorney Paul Zellerbach stated he has no intention of resigning after the heads of multiple law enforcement organizations publicly called Zellerbach to step down as D.A. and drop out from his re-election race. Earlier in the afternoon, the heads of multiple law enforcement agencies in Riverside County publicly called on Zellerbach to resign outside the Palm Springs Police Department. “Do everyone a favor and drop out and resign,” said Robert Masson, president of the Riverside Sheriff’s Association.
He and several other presidents of different groups resonated the same statement. These included sheriff’s deputies and police officers in Beaumont, Cathedral City, Corona, Desert Hot Springs, Hemet and Riverside. This might be the first time in Riverside County in which the D.A. is asked to resign. “He lied when officers lie they get put on brady lists, they get fired. What makes him any different?” said Masson. He said Zellerbach lost credibility when he allegedly tampered with his opponent’s election signs last week. “Clearly not behavior that
should be demonstrated by a district attorney who’s supposed to uphold the laws of the county and the state of California,” said William Hutchinson, president of the Palm Springs Police Officers Association. Even months before this claim, the associations said they had already come to a consensus. “We’ve seen his decline of his leadership within the office,” said Masson. Adding to that thought, Hutchinson said the sheriff’s association as well as all law enforcement associations

Elsewhere in the set, guitarist Jared Green was astounding while playing guitar and harmonica on “The White House Blues.” J u s t a s i m p re s s i v e was Shelby Lynne, a cranky 2008 main-stage attraction but a standout in a better setting here, her voice powerful whether singing blues, gospel, country or material blending all of those

Chief among her highlights was the uptempo, gospel-flavored “Call Me Up,” lead-off track on her new EP, Thanks, as well as her incredible emoting on a rendition of the pop staple “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me.” Based on the number of people who jammed into the Palomino tent on Friday night, Lynyrd Skynyrd, a late addition replacing Loretta Lynn, Continues on Page 10

story and Photos by Pat Krause Stagecoach 2014 was another crowd pleaser as some of the top new artists performed along with some of the older well known singers and bluegrass bands. There was something for everyone’s taste in music. There was the Ferris Wheel for more thrills to see the whole grounds, and the Half-pint Hootenanny air conditioned tent for the kiddies. There was dancing there and also at the Honky Tonk Dance Hall for those that loved to dance. There is so much to enjoy at Stagecoach along with the fantastic music. There were lesser-known artists early in the day at all three stages, Mane Stage, Palomino and Mustang Stages. Many of these artists will one day be headliners at Stagecoach like Georgia Florida Line that was at Stagecoach before and played in the early afternoon. Music fans who came early to see these artists got to see them before they become famous and others got to see artists that were once at the top of the billboards and maybe the last chance to see some of these bands. Fridays top artists included Shelby Lynne, Katey Segal, Black Lillies and Lynryd Skynyrd in the Mustang and Palomino Stages. The Mane stage saw Easton Corbin, Eric Church and Brantley Gilbert. Saturdays singers were former top artists, Don McLean,Crystal Gayle and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on the other 2 stages while Jennifer Nettles , Hunter Hayes and Jason Aldean were on the Mane Stage. Sunday had Hall of Famer Wanda Jackson, Michael Nesmith from the Monkeys and John Prine on the Palomino Stage. The Mane stage got rockin with Lee Brice, Florida Georgia Line and Luke Byran. There were over 62 bands or singers who performed. The fans on Friday seemed to be mostly those under 30 while Saturday, and Sunday brought out all ages to see the fabulous shows. Cowboy boots and Hats were the norm for the younger crowd with skimpy clothes and a lot of Red, White and Blue being worn. Young men were bare chested a lot or with T-shirts displaying their favorite artist. Celebrity Ashton Kutcher was seen all three days with his girlfriend in the crowd. No special privileges as he was just part of the fans.

NBA-No Bigots Allowed
By Kevin Powell In a surprisingly swift and absolute move by new NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling received a lifetime ban from the NBA, his former team and the forced sale of the team. This was in reaction to terribly racist comments by Sterling in recent weeks. Kudos to the NBA and Commissioner Silver. At the time of this writing it wasn’t clear if Sterling accepted the ruling or draw even more attention to his disgusting comments by resisting his punishment. It’s unknown how the sale will take place, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see

that be the biggest hurdle of this ruling. Sterling has a history of racism and inflammatory speech regarding race, especially African Americans, and we applaud the NBA for finally standing up to this person. I told a friend, I wanted to write an article about racism and the workplace, and he advised me not because of how dangerous the subject is. But the only way we can ever hope to make any strides against racism and bigotry is to shine the light of truth on it. Unfortunately, America (as all other countries) is a racist nation. Even though we have piles of laws to help avert instances of racism and prejudices, this is something that can’t be legislated away. It will take each and every person in this great nation to make changes in the right direction for the rest of our lifetimes before we can make any progress. Prejudice comes from a combination of our heritage, the circumstances and experiences of our lives, and on and on. Think about it. How
many of us would be genuinely happy if one of our children announced their decision to marry someone of another race, ethnicity or sex? How often do you have someone who fits that description in your home for dinner? When you meet someone new do you see an individual or do you see a color or ethnicity? Sadly, the vast majority of us all
see the latter. But it doesn’t mean we have to accept those initial reactions. Racism and prejudice in the workplace is a topic that we could write volumes about, and we’ll do a follow-up on this topic next week. I love the 1967 Spencer Tracy movie, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” They did a good job of illustrating racism
when it was much worse at that time. Maybe take a baby step this weekend and rent that movie and watch it with your kids or at least talk about the topic with your family. We all have to start somewhere.
By Kelly g. Richardson, esq. ccaL Dear Kelly: I was reading your column today and have a question I am hoping you can assist. I live in a condominium complex and we have several owners that have small children who play outside and make noise. There are now owners trying to eliminate the children from playing in and around the complex. They are calling them obnoxious and nuisances under a CC&R’s rule. They want to limit where and times when they can play. Can they do this as I don’t see children as being obnoxious or nuisances
when they are merely playing. K.W., San Diego Dear K.W.: Rules cracking down on children are not only a bad idea; they violate state and federal Fair Housing Laws. “Familial status” discrimination includes restricting children, and is illegal. Question for your association – would it be OK if adults pursued the same activities and made the same noise? Probably notso if a rule is needed, it should be focusing upon the behavior and not the age of the person engaging in the behavior. Except where very specific
safety considerations are involved – such as the pool area, the recreation building or the gym- rules mentioning kids are most likely going to violate the Fair Housing laws. For more information, visit the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing at www.DFEH.ca.gov or the federal department of Housing and Urban Development at www. HUD.gov. Thanks and good luck to your association, Kelly
trying to prepare such a study “inhouse” with volunteers. The study must include replacement cost estimations, and an assessment of the current condition and expected remaining life of common area components, so it is difficult to imagine a volunteer who is both qualified and willing to take on the responsibility. The statute also says the “board shall review this study, or cause it to be reviewed, annually…” to see if any adjustments need to be made. This certainly would indicate that the annual reviews could be performed either by the Board or by a qualified professional. Ask your reserve study preparer to help train the board how to conduct the annual reviews, unless the cost is sufficiently modest that it is acceptable. In California, reserve study preparers are not regulated. However, the Community Associations Institute has the “Reserve Specialist” credential – confirm your reserve study preparer has it. Also, for free general information, visit CAI’s Research Foundation at www. CAIRF.org and download its free “Best Practices” report on reserve studies. Thanks for your question, Kelly Kelly G. Dear Kelly: I know an association is required to have a full onsite reserve study prepared every three years by a third party, but is an association legally required to hire a third party to complete the reserve study updates which the Board is required to “review” annually in between the every third years full study? Can the Board update it themselves based on the last onsite study conducted by the third party? A.B. (professional manager), Rancho Mirage Dear A.B.: Civil Code 5550 requires most common interest developments to have a “reserve study” every three years, examining the major components which the association maintains and repairs. The statute does not specifically state that the study must be prepared by a professional, but the requirements of the statute are such that it is a rare association board which would be justified in

DHS Fire and Life Safety Inspection
By Desert star staff This week we visited with Desert Hot Springs FireChief Patrick Tomlinson at

Blvd. and Palm drive. Tomlinson, explained the importance of the fire and life safety business inspection for the DHS business community. The chief says, it is the goal of the Fire Department to inspect all businesses, hotels/ motels and apartments annually to reduce potential fire and life safety hazards while increasing the safety of our citizens, businesses, employees, patrons of our business community and our first responders. The fire inspection program is an integrated part of the required annual business license program in order to open a new business in the city of Desert Hot Springs. Heather Coladonato added that the DHS Chamber of Commerce was in full support of the efforts and will partner with the fire department and determine work closely with the business community to schedule inspections in a convenient and professional manner and will provide trained guidance and reasonable time to assist business owners in fixing any fire and life safety violations noted. Coladonato says it is a partnership to help the business community and
not an unneighborly attempt to collect extra fees for the strapped city coffers. How does a fire inspection work? The visits usually occur between the hours of 9am to 5pm. A thorough check-up will be conducted to assist you in mitigating noted fire and life safety hazards on your property examining such items as: Condition of exits, operation of exit doors, exit signs, etc. Test records for fire safety systems: fire sprinkler, fire alarm, fire pump, hood extinguishing system, fire extinguishers, etc. Knox Box - are the appropriate keys inside? Electrical - are there electrical extension cords used as a replacement for permanent wiring. Maintenance of fire apparatus access roads. Needed operational permits in accordance with the 2013 California Fire Code. As each business and structure are unique, this list may not cover all the fire safety requirements for your trade If any conditions are noted that do not comply with applicable fire codes, standards or regulations, you will be notified and a Fire
and Life Safety Inspection Report or notice of Violation will be issued indicating to correct the condition. A later inspection will be scheduled to confirm that the condition has been corrected. A Fire and Life Safety Inspection Report or notice of Violation will be issued to the responsible party indicating the observed code deficiencies or violations. A re-inspection will as a rule be scheduled for between fourteen (14) to thirty (30) days to confirm mitigation of the hazard. Reasonable time will be provided dependent on the type of deficiency. If the deficiency or violation is an immediate and extreme threat to the occupants, the re-inspection timelines could be shortened and other actions taken (including required implementation of a fire watch, red tag or stop use order for equipment/processes or determining if the building is unsafe to occupy). If you have any questions regarding this fire and life safety inspection program, please contact Stephen Otero, Fire Safety Specialist at (760) 3296411, Ext. 261 or Battalion Chief Patrick Tomlinson at (760) 329-2458.
By KMIR news staff PALM DESERT, Ca. A three-alarm fire broke out today in a Palm Desert hotel, prompting evacuations and injuring a firefighter. The blaze broke out for unknown reasons around noon at the Marriott Fairfield Inn at 72300 Highway 111, near Fred Waring Drive, and wasn’t declared under control until 4 p.m., according
to Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann. She said the injured firefighter was transported to a hospital with unspecified injuries. Hagemann said crews arrived to find smoke billowing out of the hotel’s roof, with evacuations already in progress. Hagemann said the hotel’s 35 occupied rooms and 16
employees were all evacuated safely. No other injuries were reported. More than 100 firefighters from the county, Cal Fire, Palm Springs and Cathedral City responded to the blaze and were still at the scene late this afternoon, Hagemann said.

‘Wolf of Wall Street’—Crime Does Pay
Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” based on the book by Jordon Belfort, received 5 Academy Award nominations— Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Supporting Actor, Jonah Hill and Adapted Screenplay by Terence Winter. While the film didn’t take away a single golden statuette, it still managed to make Hollywood history, setting a record for using the F-word more than any other motion picture to date. The actual count is 506, so if that offended you, be forewarned. The comedy, while raunchy and foul-mouthed, actually serves as a morality tale, revealing the downside of too much money, booze, drugs and sex. In a material world, Belfort’s lifestyle appears dazzling, but in the end, he looses what matters most in life— his wife, children and freedom. When we first meet Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio), he is a naive, sweet-faced kid eager to succeed on Wall Street. He has a natural gift for selling. Soon he is encouraged and mentored by Matthew McConaughey, who takes him under his wing, introducing him to drugs and drink to fueling his selling ability. When the firm goes under after a crash in the market, Belfort heads out on his own. Later, he teams up with Donny (Jonah Hill) a loose cannon, but a good salesman as well. Together, with other partners, they form Stratton Oakmont, a boiler room operation that becomes a financial success. Selling penny stocks, they make a huge profit at the expense of little investors who are the big losers. Eventually, he and his associates are charged with security’s fraud and money laundering. Sentenced to four years, Belfort is released in 22 months. While
in prison he writes, “The Wolf of Wall Street” and not only makes a cool million for the memoir, he receives another million for the film rights proving that crime, if interesting enough, does pay. DiCaprio gives an Oscar worthy performance as the smooth-talking salesman who can charm the birds right out of the trees. He is also darkly comedic, particularly in a segment where he drives his expensive car home while high on drugs. To say more would be a spoiler. No longer on Wall Street
after swindling so many, Norman Belfort has become a motivational speaker, teaching his listeners how to learn from their mistakes and become good at honest sales techniques. In fact, keep your eyes peeled at the end of the film when DiCaprio, as Norman Belfort, is introduced to an Australian audience by a man who is the real Norman Belfort. Also, animal lovers, here is a tidbit worth knowing. In the scene where Donny swallows a beautiful gold fish, he really doesn’t—so PETA, know the fish lived. At least, the fish onscreen
By angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS -- A coming home party was thrown in Palm Springs Saturday for Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley. The former champ got quite the surprise Saturday with a coming home party that he wasn’t expecting and he says he’s happy to see everybody and just glad to be home. After two weeks of postfight traveling, Timothy Bradley is back home here in the valley and was touched by the warm reception he received from family, friends, and fans. “This is all I need man, all the people that came out today, i
have a new found respect for all these people. They took time out of their lives to come out here to show some support and love,” said Bradley. In this most recent bout with Manny Pacquiao, Bradley suffered a torn calf muscle in his right leg. An injury he had to deal with for ten rounds of the fight, and now he’s anxious to get healed and start training again. “I want to get back on it as soon as possible. I’m thinking maybe eight weeks I’ll be back running lightly and strength training.” Bradley says that winning
the championship back is his number one career priority and would love to do it in a Bradley versus Pacqiao part three. “I would love to do that. I think the fans want to see it again... Why not do it? Let’s do it,” said Bradley. Bradley says that the party was a great way to kick off some much needed relaxation time. “I’m very appreciative and very humbled by this. I respect everyone that came out here for this. If there’s anything they need, they can come and see me,” said Bradley. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com
made it out alive. According to Belfort, in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, what he did in real life was even worse than in the film. Out of prison since 2006, he now makes a living as an author and motivational speaker, and even though he bilked his unsuspecting clients out of countless millions, he has managed to pay back quite a few millions from his royalties and speaking engagements. In his talks, he teaches others how to avoid the mistakes he made. A natural performer, he earns
$30,000 per speech which he begins by showing the film trailer for “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Yes, he’s still a wolf at heart. From Paramount, the film is rated R for sequences of strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and language throughout and some violence. Other Oscars nominated films available on DVD include: “Nebraska,” “12 Years a Slave,” “Philomena,” “American Hustle,” “Captain Phillips,” “Gravity” and “Dallas Buyers Club.”

could well have performed on the Mane Stage. Yet there’s no doubt that with the Palomino tent stuffed from front to back and on every side, there was palpable excitement throughout the legendary Southern rockers’ 90-minute set. The band’s performance was just fine, the Floridaspawned outfit still championing the hard Southern rock its original lineup popularized in the ‘70s. For the party-minded Stagecoach faithful, Skynyrd’s sharp set was mostly a soundtrack to drink, cheer, dance and shoot photos. A young woman next to me waved a gigantic foam hand you’d normally see at a baseball game – and kept slamming it into my head, seemingly oblivious to those around her. Sadly, those busy with their extracurricular activities missed hearty versions of more than a dozen of the group’s staples: “Call Me the Breeze,” “Simple Man,” “That Smell,” “Gimme Three Steps,” the indestructible “Sweet Home Alabama.” This also was the only concert I can remember where bothersome fans who typically yell out “Free Bird” were rewarded for their cat calls with a mighty band on stage playing that request. Saturday, April 26 Lera Lynn not only kicked off Day 2 of Stagecoach with her 1 p.m. set in the Palomino tent but acknowledged she wasn’t going to let early concert-goers relax and kick back. “Good morning,” she told her small crowd. “Are you well rested and recuperated from yesterday?” She then impressed in a big way, opening with “Lying in the Sun,” a mid-tempo tune that revealed the Houston native has a strong voice and magnetic stage presence. Subsequent standouts offered up by the Nashville singer-guitarist’s 45-minute set, including the country ballad “Whiskey” and memorably epic closer “I Become You,” revealed Lynn can sing everything from quiet material to roots rockers with deft pitch authenticity. Definitely one to watch. Following Lynn on the same stage was Canadian star Corb Lund, who served up his distinctive blend of country and Western music with his touring band, the Hurtin’ Albertans. Lund used humor as a key part of his 45-minute set, stopping during songs to offer quips as well as providing witty intros to his originals. The ones about life in Alberta (“Cows Around”) and playful takes on everything from religion (“Bible on the Dash”) and

drinking (“Rye Whiskey/Time to Switch to Whiskey”) to the survivalist movement (“Gettin’ Down on the Mountain”) are out of step with the majority of the Juno Award winner’s contemporaries, but it was refreshing to the enthusiastic crowd positioned in Palomino having a blast. Kudos to Grant Siemens, whose work on electric guitar and mandolin brought extra layers to everything. Tr a m p l e d by Turtles continues to be a force of nature, as evidenced by the quintet’s set on the Mustang stage. While they occasionally touched on beautiful midtempo folk numbers, sometimes abetted by a touring cellist, it was the bluegrass-on-steroids material that delighted the party crowd living it up throughout the hour-long performance. “Alone” typified the sort of hyped-up traditionalism that got the crowd crazy once the band accelerates the tempo to warp speed. Not to suggest that TBT is a one-trick pony: the entire lineup is fantastically skilled, conjuring songs that are melodically memorable no matter what the pace. But there was little doubt this night that the biggest cheers came whenever the group charged full speed ahead, with Dave Carroll (banjo), Erik Berry (mandolin) and Ryan Young (fiddle) unleashing impressive solos. “Wait So Long,” the last grenade launched from their arsenal, resulted in a huge mosh pit that suddenly transformed Stagecoach into O.C.’s 20-yearold Hootenanny. Sunday, April 27 With Corey Smith unable to make his 2 p.m. slot on the Mane Stage, Nashville outfit the Railers were called in to pinch hit. The group was up to the task and actually got some early birds to listen in the large expanse nearest to the festival’s biggest platform. But what a difference a venue makes: When only an hour or so later the same gang took to the Mustang tent for its scheduled appearance, they proved capable of convincingly winning over a crowd – not because they changed their approach but because they were in a setting where people could actually tune in more intently. One particular rocker, “The Lessons I Don’t Want to Learn,” featuring Cassandra Lawson on concertina and a good audience clap-along, was among the early highlights. A version of the Band’s classic “The Weight” came next, with the Railers’ shining harmonies and Jordan Lawson’s fiddle playing giving
this version a unique touch. Cheers for the band’s instrumental Celtic jam, dubbed “The Irish Song,” exploded as brothers Jonathan (mandolin) and Jordan (fiddle) got completely locked into the piece, turning the Mustang tent into a warm little pub. There were a number of originals in their set that ought to be embraced by commercial radio when the band’s debut is released (likely later this year), including the up-tempo “Seeing the World” and their closing cut, “I Kind of Dig the Feeling.” Best known as the Susanna Hoffs rocking on the Mustang Stage on Sunday, April 27. lead singer of power(Photo by Robert Kinsler) pop heroes The Bangles, Susanna Hoffs and a tight-knit four-man band made the post of a fastflying 40-minute concert set with a mix of new material featured on her outstanding 2012 album Someday, as well as artful covers and timeless Bangles hits. Highlights came early and often, including a tender version of Michael Nesmith’s “Different Drum” (originally a hit for Linda Ronstadt in the late 1960s), a rowdy and loose version of Big Star’s “September Gurls” and a Rolling Stones-styled version of the Prince-penned “Manic Monday” that was much more loose than the Bangles’ original. Stagecoach ended with a rousing, party-minded set from Luke Bryan, who had the crowd singing and cheering along to some of his best-known hits including “That’s My Kind of Night,” “Rain Is A Good Thing,” “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye” and Saddle Up! The so-called Half-Pint Hootenanny offered a number of his ballad “Do I.” activities for Stagecoach-goers. (Photo by Robert Kinsler)

Get Your Family Ready for Summer Fun

By Desert star staff Whether you will be taking a road trip or simply hitting a pool or water park this season, creating family fun is all about being prepared. “Make sure you have everything you need to keep the kids entertained, happy and safe. There are lots of resources available online to help you plan,” says Emily “The Travel Mom” Kaufman, a family travel expert, author and blogger. To help busy parents prepare for their upcoming trips and enjoy a fun-filled vacation, Kaufman is offering these helpful tips: • Choose Your Location Wisely: When choosing your vacation spot, make certain you visit kid-friendly destinations. Look for pools with separate water play areas for baby swimming. Sometimes big kids can be overwhelming to the little guys. If you are visiting theme parks with characters, introduce your children slowly, they may be scared. • Poolside Prep: Pack your swim bags early and often with all the swimming supplies you might need, including: towels, sunscreen, toys, snacks and swimpants. For worry-free water play, try Huggies Little Swimmers Disposable Swimpants, which feature easy open sides that make changing a breeze and provide easy disposal. Special leak guards made for water help protect against messes and stretchy sides give a comfortable fit, in and out of the water. More information can be found at www.Huggies.com. • Bring the Right Supplies: Make road trips fun with a bag full of surprises. Hang a travel cosmetic case from the seatback in front of where your child is seated, filled with ageappropriate activities and snacks. Add games, books, dolls and create a playlist of their favorite songs. If flying, bring everything you might need for 24 hours, just in case. This includes medication, a change of clothes, snacks and games. Don’t forget headphones, so other passengers don’t have to share your child’s video singalong. • Protect from the Sun: Hydrate often, use sunscreen throughout the day and protect children with sun umbrellas, t-shirts and hats. Children’s eyes are much more sensitive than adults, so sunglasses are a good idea at the beach and pool. • Keep Routines: Babies are creatures of habit. Try sticking to routines for meals, bed and bath time. Try not to schedule too much in a day to avoid overtired little ones. Make bedtime easier for yourself by bringing along that special object of affection. Having their own blanket or toy will bring familiarity to a new place. Planning family travel can be stressful but will ultimately be a time you look back on fondly with pictures and memories. (StatePoint)

s p o rt s Burciaga, Hitting Lead Rajahs’ Charge BaseBall Roundup By daniel maRinelli
Palm Springs, CA. – Behind a four-run first inning on Friday, the Indio High School Rajahs finished a two-game sweep of the Palm Springs High School Indians who placed the Rajahs back in the DVL’s upper tier. Following their semifinal victory in March’s Rotary Tournament, the Rajahs lost four of their next seven games, and in those seven games, averaged just 2.3 runs a game. In the first inning at Palm Springs High School, however, partly due to the inexperience of the Indians’ freshman starting pitcher, Spencer Keane – who merely lasted a third of an inning – Indio exploded for four runs on four hits. “I don’t remember us swinging at too many bad pitches,” Rajahs head coach Mark Brenner said. “We didn’t give away pitches, and when we got good pitches to hit, we capitalized and scored runs. We adjusted the order around a little bit; we did that on Tuesday, and I think they’re getting used to (the batting lineup) – it helped today.” After walking and giving up a
hit to the Rajahs’ first two batters, Juan Siqueiros laced an RBI single, RBI-guy Steven Cuevas roped an RBI double and Jaime Rocha finished the Rajahs’ first inning rally with a one-out, twoRBI single. A Jonathan Diaz RBI sacrifice bunt in the third inning, plus two RBI singles from Cuevas and Rocha in the fourth inning ballooned the Indio lead to 7-0 – the eventual final score. Indio’s recent lackluster hitting is not the only reason Coach Brenner has had to toy with the lineup. Since March 24, starting shortstop and leadoff batter Nate Munoz has been sidelined with a thumb injury that has left a notable gap in the top of Rajahs’ lineup. Before Munoz went out, the Rajahs were averaging 5.3 runs a game, significantly higher than the 2.3 runs a game Indio has been scoring since his injury. “He got his cast-off Monday,” Coach Brenner said. “We thought we would get good news, that it was healed – and we would maybe have him back for today or next week. When they took it off and X-rayed (Munoz’s thumb),
Adam Burciaga awaits the pitch from Justin Jordan. (Photo by Dan Marinelli) they said another three weeks. He’s going be out at least until the week of “ (Coachella Valley). Despite Munoz’s unfortunate injury, Indio still managed to score seven runs – yet the Rajahs

probably should have been mercy-ruled (up by 10 after the fifth inning) a less-experienced Indians team. In the fifth inning, with no outs, Indio loaded the bases for its two, three and four hitters, and failed to plate one run. “That’s an opportunity where – who knows?” Coach Brenner said. “Could have been lack of focus – trying too hard in that moment. That was my only criticism. That one inning was a good opportunity to put the game completely away. You never can get too comfortable in high school baseball.” Against the second-to-last place Indians, with a significant lead, failing to score runs that should have been scored is not a huge issue. If the Rajahs were playing a more competitive team, the top of the lineup failing to execute with no outs and the bases loaded could be the difference between winning and losing. The offensive mishap did not cost the Rajahs the victory, due in large part to the Adam Burciaga’s ability to prevent the Indians from scoring. Adam – the older brother of Chris, who pitched Tuesday
for the Rajahs – threw less than 100 pitches, striking out four in a complete-game shutout. Additionally, Adam did not give up a single hit or walk after the second inning. “(Adam) came out and pitched fantastically,” Coach Brenner said. “He was locating with his fastball well, pitching a lot of strikes, so he was able to use his curve ball to compliment his fastball today. He had good mental toughness; whenever runners got on base, he’d let his defense work for him.” With the win, Indio (3-3 in DVL, 13-6 Overall) moves into a tie for third with the Cathedral City High School Lions. The loss puts Palm Springs (1-5 in DVL, 9-13 Overall) in a tie for the last place with the Coachella Valley High School Arabs. The Rajahs played the Saints at Xavier Prep High School on Tuesday. On Friday, the Saints travel to Indio to take on the Rajahs at 6:30 pm. The Indians traveled to Coachella Valley to play the Arabs on Tuesday. On Friday, the Arabs go to Palm Springs to play the Indians at 3:15 pm.

COD To Present “Les Miserables” By Jack Lyons theatre and Film critic One of the musical theatre’s most honored and beloved musicals of the last twenty-five years is “Les Miserables”, winner of eight Tony Awards. It’s the timeless and exciting story of Jean Valjean, who is pursued by the implacable and relentless policeman Inspector Javert. Based on the epic novel written by the great 19th century French writer Victor Hugo, the COD production graces the stage of the McCallum Theatre, Palm Desert, for four performances only: Thursday, May 1st, at 7 pm, Friday, May 2nd at 8 pm, Saturday, May 3rd, at 8 pm, and Sunday, May 4th at 2 pm.
The stirring and magnificent score by Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, with both romantic and rousing lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer is being directed and chorographed by Sha Newman, under the baton of musical director Dr. Darlene Romano, who conducts fifteen pit musicians. “Les Miz” boasts a cast of thirty-two performers and stars: Michael Hadley as Jean Valjean; Chris Sands as Inspector Javert; 2013 Open Call winner April Murphy as Fantine; Briana Finell as Cosette; Sarah Hagar as Eponine; Colleen Kelley and Rick Doerfler as Messr and Madame Thenardier; Alden Dickey as Marius; and Cliff Plummer as Enjolras; and an additional
ensemble cast of twenty-three dedicated performers. In between rehearsals, I had an opportunity to discuss some aspects of the show from the point of view of a couple of the principal actors as well as some observations from Darlene Romano. Desert Star Weekly: This score is so magnificent and it’s one of my favorites, but it’s over 25 years old. So how do you approach it as a musical conductor? Do you find the urge to “freshen” it in any way? DR: No, not really. We’re using the orchestrations that was used in the 2010/2011 United Kingdom tour, which is pretty recent as far as musical scores go. I believe, however, that this is more keyboard dependent than in past versions. DSW: You mentioned that your show has fifteen musicians in the pit accompanying the singers and actors on stage. DR: Yes. There’s no substitute for a live orchestra playing for a cast, especially in this most musically compelling production. Everyone in this production are alumns or active COD students, which is part of the COD mission statement. It’s a win-win for everyone, especially the audience.
INDIO, Ca. - Prolific jewel thief Doris Marie Payne pleaded guilty today to stealing a diamond ring from a Palm Desert jewelry store. The 83-year-old defendant admitted one felony count each of burglary and grand theft and was immediately sentenced to four years in custody. She will serve half of the time in jail and the other half under supervision, her attorney said. Payne, whose lengthy career as an international jewel thief was detailed in a documentary, swiped the 3.5-carat, $22,500 ring last Oct. 21 from El Paseo Jewelers. Payne had been out of prison for about three months, and was living in a Riverside motel, at the time of the ring theft. She was on probation for felony theft in a Los Angeles case when the crime in Palm Desert occurred. The general manager of El Paseo Jewelers, Rajendra Mehta, testified at Payne’s preliminary
hearing last December that the defendant came into the store on Oct. 21 and said her jewelry had been stolen. She looked at earrings, necklaces, loose diamonds and rings, and tried some pieces on, then said she would return with a cashier’s check, Mehta said. “`Did the defendant put that (stolen) ring on her finger?’’ Deputy District Attorney AnneMarie Lofthouse asked. “Yes,’’ Mehta said. He said his bookkeeper told him later that afternoon that a ring was missing, and an inventory conducted by employees confirmed it. “Do you know who the last person was with the ring?’’ Lofthouse asked. “Miss Payne,’’ Mehta replied. Employee Jodi Clapinski, who worked in the store that day, also testified she saw Payne try on the ring but did not see her take it. Michael Jacobs, who worked
at his wife’s secondhand jewelry dealer business in Palm Desert, testified that Payne came in the day of the ring theft and said she had a ring she wanted to sell. He said she asked for $1,000, and he gave her $800. Sheriff’s deputies found the ring there on Nov. 6. According to Deputy Adan Yamaguchi, detectives identified the woman in El Paseo Jewelers as Payne using images captured Oct. 18 in Saks Fifth Avenue in Palm Desert. A store security guard recognized her ``from the company’s run-in with Payne in 2010,’’ when she was arrested for theft, according to Yamaguchi. She’s been held since then at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning in lieu of $65,000 bail. In ``The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne,’’ which premiered in April at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto, Payne says her ``methodology of stealing jewelry
A short break provided a quick moment to chat briefly with co-stars Mike Hadley and Chris Sands. MH: I’ve done two concert versions as Jean Valjean, but this is my first full production playing this wonderful character. DSW: I’ve seen both of those concert readings and now look forward to seeing you in this full production. Chris, how do like playing a villain like Javert? You’re everybody’s favorite nice guy in the valley. CS: I don’t seen Javert as a villain. I see him more as a conflicted human being; part victim due to his past. He was born in a prison and grew up in that environment. He’s a stickler for the rules of society. In his mind there is just right and wrong; no middle ground. I look for and try to find the good in him. Another rehearsal break lets me catch up with Lou Galvan, one of the valley’s finest comedy and character actors. DSW: How does it feel to be back on the boards with some of your acting buddies? LG: We’re all having such fun. Most of the older actors have worked with each for years. Mike Hadley and Chris Sands have
known each other for 30 years. I’m referring this show as ‘the reunion show’. It’s old home week for me and Mike, Chris, Sarah Hagar, April Kelley, Cliff Plummer, and Colleen Kelley. It’s always a little bit special when you work with talented friends.” The energy level in this show is as high as the barricade set piece designed by set designer magician J.W. Layne (It’s over fifteen feet). Epic stories demand epic sets, costumes, lighting designers, and sound effects. Talented actors deserve nothing less in telling the story. I’m going to leave the last word concerning the production to the play’s director Sha Newman. When I asked her if she wanted anything to add to the comments of her cast, she smiled and said, “yes, My cast is hot! Everyone should come and see this show”. How can anyone follow that assessment from the Boss Lady? Not me. For reservations and ticket information go online to: www. mcallumtheatre.com/show_ details.php
took me all over the world ... New York, Milan, Paris, Rome, London,’’ for many years. Payne’s record includes: pleading no contest in June 2011 to stealing a $16,000 ring from a Santa Monica jewelry store, for which she sentenced to 16 months in prison; a January 2011 conviction for stealing an
$8,900 ring from Macy’s in San Diego for which she was given five years in prison; and an April 2010 conviction for stealing a $1,300 Burberry trench coat from a Saks store in Costa Mesa for which she got a year in jail.

Dancing Through The Sands Of Time
At the Desert Youth Ballet in Rancho Mirage, CA-a tribute to Valerie Mahabir, founder honoring her for a 55-year ballet career. By Pamela Price The Desert is celebrating anniversaries this year from international to local milestones in cinema, the arts, and dance. The Palm Springs International Film Festival turned a page with a stunning 25th Anniversary Gala. January On a smaller scale, Valerie Mahabir founder and Artistic Director of The Desert Youth Ballet in Rancho Mirage celebrated her 55 year dance career. It all came together on a cool Saturday evening, April 26th when Ms Mahabir joined by friends, dance students and
their families gathered at her impressive studio, designed by her husband, world renowned architect Narendra Patel, who she thanked “for his loving support” over the years. DeAnn Lubell-Ames and Lee Ames emcees and friends of Ms. Mahabir spoke about her illustrious career as a ballerina noting she is the sole certified Royal Academy of Dance instructor in the Coachella Valley. As the starlit sky framed the dance studio’s dramatic outdoor stage draped in white, petite ballerinas, Ms Mahabir’s students were on their toes,
literally. Choreographed with charm and simplicity these young ballerinas performed The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Grande Tarantella among other selections. Highlight of the event was Austin Eder, 15 winners of the Youth America Grand Prix ( YGAP) Los Angeles regional this year impressing the audience with her interpretation of Flames of Paris, Calvary Halt and Broken. The recital concluded with Kira Leggat, 15 performing with a captivating dance expression, Wide Awake. Among the young ballerina, students were Victoria DeSantis, Pitiana Lunak, Elyona
