The Osmond Family

David Osmond and Marie Osmond

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The famous only woman performer from the Osmond Family, Marie Osmond, gave a new type of concert at Fantasy Springs Casino on Sat. April 4th. Remember the Donny and Marie TV show a few years ago? Both Donny and Marie have had successes as solo artists. Marie brought this brand new

idea to her new show where she chronicles her life with both words and song. Marie started by saying this is her 5th decade in show business as she started at the age of 3. At age 4, she was on the Andy Williams TV show. At 12, she was just a gangly teenager and the only Osmond to ever wear braces. Marie continued with her life

story by explaining how she got her first #1 hit, Paper Roses at 13. Had a TV show with her brother Donny at 16 and traveled a lot with the family and the Osmond Brothers all over the world. Marie said Judy Garland had a big influence in her life and then sang Over the Rainbow. She said she fell in love at 22 and went on the

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The ANA Inspiration LPGA golf major held its annual Teen Champions Junior Challenge where 34 young women vied for a chance to play in the first major of the year, the ANA Inspiration LPGA tournament as an amateur. The Teens are paired with a LPGA pro during the rounds. The LPGA Pros were Nancy Lopez, Donna Caponi, Pat Bradley, Patty Sheehan, Amy Alcott, Betsy King,

Nancy Bowen, Sandra Palmer, Alice Miller, Kathy Whitwoth, and Patricia Meunier-Lebouc as Coaches and Mentors. All these Pros are big names in LPGA history and have won many major LPGA tournaments. The winner this year was Haley Moore from Excondido, CA with a fantastic 67 for the round. Haley has played in the tournament before and at 16 will be the youngest player in the

ANA Inspiration. Her Pro was Patricia Meunier-Lebouc who won this tournament in 2003. Haley said Patricia gave her valuable information, guidance and filled her head with positive thoughts when she got nervous. The first place winners were Donna Caponi’s team of Malie Eversberger from Palm Desert, Brittany Park from Fullerton, and

Brittany Lincicome the big LPGA ANA Winner

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The LPGA ANA Inspiration golf tournament was full of excitement and drama. The winner was, who was also the winner in 2009. The leader board held many of the winners from the past. Lexi Thompson and Morgan Pressel gave it their in their efforts for a win that eluded them both. Each played fantastic golf but for a couple missed putts that could have had them in the winner’s circle again. Lydia Ko was trying to continue her streak of 30 straight rounds to beat Annika Sorenstam’s record but had a disappointing round of one over par on the second day to stop the streak. It seems there was a drama each day of the tournament. The final round brought an exciting finish to the tournament. Brittany Lincicome and Stacy Lewis, the 2011 winner of the tournament, tied. A record three tries on 18th hole playoff before a winner was chosen with a short putt. Each tie-breaking 18th hole left both women with missed putts to the dismay of the crowd as you could hear the ooohs and aaahs with each missed putt. The biggest drama for the day was when Brittany had an eagle on 18 for a chance at the title, and Stacy missed her putt on 18 that led to the tiebreaker. Everyone waits for the Jump into Poppies Pond for the winner. This time Brittany took her Caddie, Her Fiancé and her

Dad with her into the Pond. They all took a big run and leaped into the cold water. Brittany was given a newly designed $1000 robe to go along with her old 2009 one. She was given two tickets to fly anywhere ANA flies. The ceremony of awarding the trophy was the same. New traditions are being made with Oriental drums being played. ANA stewardesses were seen on the green before the jump and handing out towels after the jump. A new Haley Moore and Brittany Lincicome day is emerging with ANA as the new title sponsor that took over for KraftNabisco when they left as the sponsor last year. Some number to know is that this is the first time it took three attempts at a play off to get a winner. This is only the 6th time, there was a playoff. Even after Lydia Ko didn’t make the top 10, she will still remain Stacey Lewis Second Place Lexi Thompson 2014 Winner number 1 in the world for the 10th straight week. Ko has never missed a cut in 49 tour starts. Amateur Haley Moore was the only non-professional to make the cut and ended up with a respectable 6 over par score. There have been very few women to win this tournament twice. Brittany Lincicome scored an eagle on 18 to win this tournament in 2009 like this year.

‘Street Party’ at the Palm Desert Art Museum

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Jamie Kabler and Helene Galen held a fabulous party on March 31st at the Palm Desert Art Museum. This was a true “Street Party” with all the trimmings. This amazing party was filled with music, scrumptious food and dancing. The party was held in the Faye Sarkowsky garden in the back of the museum. There were tables for sitting or standing all through the garden with overhead strings of lights to illuminate the whole area. There were four food trucks where Hamburgers, French Fries, Lobster burgers, other sandwiches and side dishes that were served to a waiting line of guests. Across from them were other food areas that served all kinds of Pizza and hot dogs. Guests had a big choice of foods for the evening. Bars were set up in several areas, and waiters distributed trays of cookies. This novel idea for a party was really enjoyed by the 700 guests as smiles were on everyone’s faces, and compliments were overflowing for the host and hostess. The Citrus College band and singers were awesome, as they had set up a stage for the large

group of performers. People were dancing to the music many times before they ate. People were dancing even if they didn’t have a partner, as no one wanted to just do toe dancing at their table. It was just a really fun party, and everyone seemed to enjoy him or herself. The weather was perfect, and the Art Museum Garden area is wonderful for large crowds and entertainment. It was the FUN party of the year.

Stretch I.R.A. Will Congress Change the Rules?

By Janice Gough What is a Stretch IRA? Rather than it being a type of Individual Retirement Account (IRA), it is an estate planning

concept that is applied to extend the financial life of an IRA across multiple generations. This strategy gives the funds in the IRA more time – potentially decades – to compound tax-deferred. This provides the opportunity to grow the funds significantly for future generations. The stretch IRA rules allow beneficiaries to extend required minimum distributions on Inherited IRAs, over their lifetimes, maximizing the value of their inheritance and keeping income low by taking only the minimums each year. When the IRA was created in 1974, Congress was worried about workers having enough for retirement. In some cases, employees who had earned benefits were left with little or nothing for their retirement years. At that time, many companies that offered pension plans did not keep their pension promises

because of bankruptcy or shady bookkeeping, or failure to meet pension financing obligations. The IRA gave employees the ownership of their retirement account along with another choice to save for retirement. Congress probably never considered the possibility that IRAs could grow so large that there would be balances left over for beneficiaries. Congress realizes today that there are large amounts that they will only be able to collect taxes on as distributions are taken and this could be in the distant future. This is the reason for eliminating the Stretch IRA rules. President Obama’s budget proposals for the 2016 fiscal year once again called for the elimination of the stretch IRA. It may not happen this year, but eventually, it is likely to be enacted. Under the latest proposal,

the stretch IRA, which provides a lifetime payout to IRA beneficiaries, would be replaced with a mandate that the payout be limited to five years. This might seem to be a blow to beneficiaries, however, a good financial advisor will know of solutions that are at least as attractive. In light of this marked change, it seems likely that Congress will see no problem eliminating the stretch IRA. Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that once a beneficiary inherits an IRA, the account is no longer considered a “retirement fund” for federal bankruptcy protection. Even the Supreme Court does not view an inherited IRA as a retirement account. Considering these latest rulings, the fate of the stretch IRA is probably in jeopardy. The Silver lining could leave

clients with better and less complicated options. Turning IRAs into Tax Free life insurance is a smarter way of passing assets on to heirs and is an even better plan for beneficiaries than the Stretch IRA. Under a life insurance plan, beneficiary payouts can be structured over lifetimes and benefits are received Tax Free. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Kelly, the management company told us at a recent meeting that the HOA was due over $130,000 in past due HOA assessments. Therefore they increased our assessments 18%. WOW!!! This HOA is only two years old! I was told they send notices after 30,60,90 days. When I asked what happens after 90 days, could they turn over the delinquent accounts to collections or put a lien on their property. I was told that management cannot put a lien on until the amount in arrears is $1,800.00! Is this true? D.M., Corona Dear D.M.: Your experience illustrates why it is so important that all members pay their assessments and why associations should vigorously pursue those who do not, because it affects everyone. However, what you were told is incorrect – the association can place a lien on the delinquent member’s property before the balance reaches $1,800 or one year. That threshold must be met before the association can foreclose upon that lien, meaning before it files a foreclosure lawsuit or commences a non-judicial foreclosure process. Until that

threshold is met, the association can sue in small claims court, can lien the property, or can sue for money damages in Superior Court. Another factor which may be involved is that the model budgets developers typically use, following Bureau of Real Estate guidelines, are overly optimistic and often are significantly lower than the true costs the association experiences. Boards taking over from the developer often must ramp up the budget, resulting in increased assessments and membership consternation, but it is often not their fault (so put away the pitchforks!). Best, Kelly Dear Mr. Richardson I really need your help on a few questions. I enjoy your articles and find them informative. l. Our board wants to change our CC&Rs and eliminate cumulative voting. They would have the community vote on this. What are the pros and cons? April 8, 2015

How does cumulative voting work? 2. We were told a board can meet and discuss things about the community any time as long as it isn’t a particular item in detail. Is this true? Thanks, D.G., Valencia Dear D.G.: Cumulative voting is often included in the original CC&Rs and Bylaws. When multiple board seats are up for election, it allows a member to stack their votes. So if five seats are being filled by election, one could cast all five votes for one candidate, or three for one and two for another, for example. The idea behind it was to try to allow representation on the board for alternate points of view, but in actuality it encourages gamesmanship in HOA elections. It creates more mischief and confusion than it is worth, and so my clients normally vote to ban cumulative voting. As to board discussions, the law is clear – unless it is identified

on an agenda at least four days before the board meeting (Civil Code 4930(a)), came up after the agenda was posted (Civil Code 4930(d)(2)), or is an emergency (Civil Code 4930(d)(1), the board cannot discuss it. The board may not discuss association business outside of a board meeting (Civil Code 4910). A “board meeting” is any discussion involving a quorum of the board discussing any HOA business (Civil Code 4090). [See statutes at www.leginfo. legislature.ca.gov.] Thanks, Kelly Kelly G. How to Make Dinnertime a Priority for Your Family

By Desert Star Staff Do you have dinner with your kids? It’s become almost a luxury today, with our crammed schedules. And yet, numerous studies show that no other hour in your children’s day will deliver as many emotional and psychological benefits as the one spent unwinding and connecting over food and conversation. “A nightly commitment to family dinners can be transformative,” says Anne K. Fishel, Ph.D., therapist, cofounder of Family Dinner Project, and author of “Home for Dinner, Mixing Food, Fun, and Conversation for a Happier Family and Healthier Kids,” (AMACOM). Amongst finicky eaters, defiant teens and the lure of fast food, how can home cooking and family dinner be your household’s priority? In her new book, Fishel shares strategies for busy parents to overcome family dinnertime hurdles. Here she shares a few parenting insights: Meaningful Conversation: A family meal is an excellent opportunity to connect with your children. Foster dinner conversation by making the family table a technology-free zone. You may find that parents have a harder time than kids

turning off their gadgets. Throughout your day, collect stories that might amuse your children, such as something mischievous the dog did. Starting by telling as story yourself can get the conversation rolling. Ask questions that demonstrate you’ve been paying attention. For example, “I know that today was your first art class. What was it like?” To deepen conversation, turn to daily media content. For example, elections can prompt discussions about how democracy works. Scandals can provide fodder for talk about truth-telling. Trying New Things: Don’t underestimate your child’s taste buds. The idea that young children and adults must eat different foods might be a myth created by food manufacturers and marketers. Your child might like chicken piccata as much as chicken fingers. Entice picky eaters by modeling adventurous eating. Eat the new food with gusto, and then ask, “Would you like to taste it? Can you describe the taste?” This focuses your child’s attention on the food, rather than on rejecting it. Avoid letting food become a power struggle. If your child refuses a particular meal, stay

calm and offer an alternative such as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich -- nothing that makes much extra work for you. Have Fun: Ask kids to help with meal preparation. Spinning salad greens and setting the timer are some of the many things young children can do. For older kids, do a role reversal one night a week and have them

do the cooking. It can be fun to re-create meals kids have seen advertised on TV or eaten in restaurants. For example, most supermarkets offer ready-made pizza dough. Combined with tomato sauce from a jar, it’s simple to make pizza at home. Let teens choose music to listen to during dinner. On other

nights, play music you listened to as a teenager. For more dinnertime insights, and information about the book, visit www.amacombooks.org/ HomeForDinner.htm. Family dinner offers more than just nutrition. Food may bring everyone to the table, but it is the fun and conversation that will keep them there. StatePoint

Don’t Wait, Vaccinate: Protect Infants from Deadly Diseases

By Desert Star Staff It may seem like diseases like polio, measles and whooping cough are a thing of the past. But the 2014-15 measles outbreak is a stark reminder that these viruses still circulate and children who are not immunized are at risk. During National Infant Immunization Week, April 1825, pediatricians are highlighting the importance of protecting our most vulnerable children

4

DesertSTAR

from infectious diseases. “One of the most important decisions you can make as a parent is to immunize your child against disease,” says Sandra G. Hassink, MD, FAAP, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “It’s best to immunize your child on time, according to the recommended vaccine schedule. These diseases are unpredictable, and we never know where they will pop up next in our communities. ”

Protection Begins Early: The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention all recommend children be immunized against 14 vaccinepreventable diseases by the time they are two years old. Mothers can even begin protecting their infants before they’re even born. “Protecting your newborn should start during pregnancy. April 8, 2015

Infants don’t receive their first dose of tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine until they are two months old, and they can’t receive a flu vaccine until six months. When pregnant women are immunized with these vaccines, that protection extends to their newborns,” says Hassink. Expectant parents can also encourage their families to be vaccinated against flu and pertussis (also known as whooping cough), to provide a cocoon of protection around the newborn. Follow the Schedule: Your pediatrician will outline the recommended schedule of vaccines. The first vaccine is Hepatitis B, which infants usually receive a day or two after birth. Your child’s first year will also include immunizations against influenza pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, rotavirus, pneumococcal, polio and Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib). The immunization schedule has been carefully designed so children receive each vaccine when it will produce the best response from their immune systems, and when the child is most vulnerable to a particular disease. Delaying vaccines means delaying protection from these diseases. Talk with your pediatrician if you have questions about your child’s vaccines.

E a s e Te a r s : W h i l e vaccinations can cause discomfort, most babies calm down quickly after being held by parents and hearing their reassuring voices. Breastfeeding during or immediately following the vaccination can provide significant relief. Some pediatricians might offer remedies, such as a cooling spray or topical anesthetic cream. Combination vaccines include up to five vaccines in a single vial, so fewer needles are needed. Remember, any discomfort your baby feels is experienced as a single event, even if he or she receives multiple vaccines in a visit. Spreading vaccines over multiple visits will only increase the number of times your baby feels pain, and leave your baby unprotected longer. “Infants are especially vulnerable to infectious diseases. Following the recommended immunization schedule ensures your baby will be protected as soon as possible,” Dr. Hassink said. Learn more about infant and childhood immunizations at www.healthychildren.org. Just as you never leave home without buckling your baby into a car seat, you should always protect your child from infectious diseases. StatePoint

Earth Day Celebrations Planned Across California

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – CalRecycle is proud to support events throughout California in recognition of Earth Day. Local communities and organizations

will hold commemorations on Wednesday, April 22, and throughout the month of April. Click here to find an Earth Day celebration near you. In the midst of one of the most severe

droughts on record, CalRecycle encourages every Californian to get involved in conservation efforts, attend a local festivity, or organize an Earth Day event in your neighborhood.

“As a nation we’ve made so much progress in environmental stewardship over the past 46 years, and we’re especially proud here in California to be a recognized leader in conserving resources, respecting our natural surroundings, and becoming more sustainable,” CalRecycle Director Caroll Mortensen said. “Earth Day is about celebrating the milestones, but also raising awareness of the problems that remain; the problems we must join together to solve for the sake of future generations.” Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson designated April 22 as a “national day for the environment” in 1970 as a way to mobilize the public around environmental issues. The show of public support translated to political action, which ultimately resulted in the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (December

1970), the strengthening of the Clean Air Act (December 1970), and passage of the Clean Water Act (October 1972). In California, groundbreaking initiatives like the Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 and the Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act of 1987, together with some of the most progressive environmental targets in the world, have resulted in historically low disposal rates in California landfills. CalRecycle continues to work towards a society that uses less, recycles more, and further elevates resource conservation. CalRecycle challenges everyone to take action this Earth Day and bring California one-step closer to reaching its ambitious statewide goal of 75 percent recycling, composting or source reduction of solid waste by 2020.

‘Emergency Alert’ Sparks Panic Among TV Viewers

By Desert Star Staff The residents of about a dozen US states received a scare when an ominous message rolled across their TV screens announcing an ‘emergency alert’ with the names of their states –

without any explanation or further information. A test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) began shortly before noon on Monday and was seen by millions of television viewers in Indiana, Kentucky,

Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, DC, Infowars reported. EAS is a special department run by the Federal Emergency

Management Agency (FEMA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the National Weather Service (NOAA/ NWS). The alert interrupted regularly scheduled television programs for 10 minutes with a listing of affected states and an announcement that the alert would remain in effect until midnight. Americans across the country took to social media to express a wide range of emotions – from bewilderment to panic – as the alert gave no indication that it was only a test. While much of the alert was for the East Coast of the United States, viewers from as far away as Sacramento, California, also reported seeing the test. The emergency alert follows shortly after reports that elite

COACHELLA VALLEY -- California’s water crisis is attracting national attention, and a recent New York Times article points to water consumption right here in our valley. Statewide water resource numbers show valley water agencies using more than double the state average. The Coachella Valley is always operating in a state of drought, because it is after all the desert; but here in the valley where our number one industry is tourism there are lush lawns, sprawling golf courses and plenty of fountains. Still, the Coachella Valley Water District tells us the water use numbers compared to the rest of the state are misleading. It’s an oasis here in the desert, but water use numbers indicate our valley residents are using 200 gallons per day. CVWD says those numbers aren’t necessarily accurate for three reasons: “One, we have large lots.” Two, we do live in the desert.

“It’s hot here, so if you want landscaping to survive, you have to use a lot of water,” and finally, “Our numbers are skewed by the season population,” said Heather Engel, with CVWD. More than 100 golf course are spread across the valley, while the water district says they make up 17% of water use they are not counted in the state restrictions. “53 of our golf courses are using a non-potable either recycled water or Colorado River water, so they would be exempt from that, the remaining golf courses are private well pumpers and again even though the groundwater that they’re pumping is our drinking water, it’s not potable when they take it out,” said Engel. Potable means drinking water, and our water comes from a natural underground aquifer under the valley. Part of what fills it is rain and runoff from the mountains that seeps into the ground, and the other part is

imported by water agencies. Palm Desert Country Club removed themselves from the aquifer. They installed a new water line that brings in reclaimed water and canal water. “We’re doing what we can, we’re trying to reduce water use. Since 2012, I’ve reduced 227 acre feet of water use on this property and we’re hoping to do more,” said Palm Desert Country Club’s superintendent, Ted Jenereux.

This may be the golf course of the future, and with the help of a grant, next month they will start removing certain portions of turf. “This is one of the larger areas we’re going to be removing, we’re going to be removing roughly 15 acres this year and hopefully another 15 acres next year,” said Jenereux. The water district says we need to look at our own homes and lawns to reduce water use. “By far the largest water users in the valley, especially if

branches of the US military including Green Berets, Navy SEALS and Special Operations from the Air Force and Marines - are preparing to hold military training in seven southwest states, with some troops operating incognito among civilians. Operation Jade Helm, which is scheduled to kick off in July and run for eight weeks, will involve the participation of 1,200 troops in dozens of towns in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas and Utah. No information was available indicating that the emergency alert was connected to this upcoming military drill, where Americans were asked to provide information on ‘suspicious’ activity to the authorities.

you’re looking at just groundwater is the domestic or urban users, that’s me and you,” said Engel. The Coachella Valley Water District is holding a landscape workshop this week. They tell us their customers have taken out nearly 6 million feet of turf under their rebate programs since 2007. Meanwhile, statewide golf associations say they also will do their part to reduce water use.

Germanwings Co-Pilot told Lufthansa in 2009 About ‘Severe Depression’

6

By Desert Star Staff Andreas Lubitz, the copilot of the Germanwings plane that crashed in the French Alps with 150 people on board last week, informed Lufthansa of his psychological problems in 2009. Lubitz told his flight school in medical documents he submitted in connection with resuming his flight training, about a “previous episode of severe depression,” Lufthansa said in a press release. The co-pilot of flight 4U9525 “interrupted his pilot training at the Flight Training Pilot School for several months,” the company added. According to the press

April 8, 2015

release, Lubitz “received the medical certificate confirming his fitness to fly” on his return to training. Lufthansa said it had submitted additional documents to the Dusseldorf Public Prosecutor, including the copilot’s email correspondence with the flight school. Investigators believe that Lubitz locked the captain of the Germanwings flight from Barcelona to Duesseldorf out of the cockpit and flew the Airbus A320 into the side of a mountain. They said torn-up sick notes were found that showed the 27-year-old co-pilot was suffering

from an illness and these should have grounded him. Germanwings, owned by Lufthansa, said it hadn’t received a sick note from Lubitz for the day of the crash. Previously, Lufthansa’s CEO said the company wasn’t aware of anything that could have induced the co-pilot to crash the plane deliberately, and that he was fit to fly. Lufthansa may be facing unlimited liability for damages in the crash, aviation lawyers said, as the company told its insurers to set aside $300 million to cover claims, recovery costs and the loss of the plane. www.desertstarweekly.com

Specifically, the Annex will provide 24 hr. care and shelter to the homeless while case management works to assist with individual referrals to either in-house residential programs or other local agencies. It will include separate sleeping areas for men and women as well as serve as a 24-hour hot and cold weather shelter, providing refuge from extreme weather conditions. Health to Hope, a local non-profit will lease and staff a space within

the Annex for a medical / dental clinic. Now that this building is completed, CVRM will be able to reclaim much needed space for our expanding program, including our gym/multipurpose room. Since 1971, the Rescue Mission has strived to meet the ever-growing needs of individuals, who for a variety of reasons have found themselves without the basic necessities of life. A dedicated staff and volunteers serve more than 198,000 hot

meals annually and provide 72,000 nights of safe shelter to men, women and children. Food, clothing, and showers are also provided for those who do not shelter at the Mission. Valley Golf Courses Respond to Water Conservation

By KMIR News Staff COACHELLA VALLEY As the details and gravity of Governor Jerry Brown’s executive order mandating new water restrictions are setting in, many in the valley wonder about the dozens of golf courses dotting the landscape across the valley. Today, the association representing those golf courses issued a statement on the subject: Coachella Valley Golf Community Responds to Governor’s Executive Order re Mandatory Water Reductions 2013 was the driest year on record. 2014 was the hottest year on record. March 2015 was the hottest March on record. We are in the 4th year of sustained drought. badly drawn down, are going to be drawn down further as spring turns to summer turns to fall in 2015. The aquifer that sustains all life and economic activity in the Coachella Valley remains in a

state of mild overdraft. All of this has led Governor Brown to issue an unprecedented Executive Order calling for mandatory water reductions – a first for the State of California.

Because they are not “domestic users” under the terms of the Order, Coachella Valley’s golf courses do not come under the gubernatorial directive. However, the Coachella Valley golf community is committed to not just continuing the work it has undertaken in collaboration with the Coachella Valley Water District to meet the reduced consumption goals of the Coachella Valley Water Management Plan, it is committed to accelerating that effort. In addition, the normative golf leadership organizations parties to this communique will encourage its members to voluntarily comply with the terms of the Governor’s Order as they are ultimately defined and prescribed by the Coachella Valley Water District. Shared sacrifice unites communities. The Coachella Valley golf community is committed to working across all communities and all lines to share in the difficult work ahead. Source KMIR

Riv. Co. Property Owners: Taxes Due Soon

By KMIR News Staff COACHELLA VALLEY Riverside County homeowners only have until April 10th to make good on their annual property tax bills. In October, the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office sent out notices seeking payments on more than 910,000 secured properties, including parcels, houses and condominiums, for the 2014-15 tax year. The period to pay the first installment ended Dec. 10. The second and final installment is due April 10. Any payments received after that will be

considered delinquent and incur a 10 percent late fee, according to county officials. ``I would like to remind residents to please pay the second installment of their annual property tax bills to avoid a penalty,’’ Treasurer-Tax Collector Don Kent said. ``New payment options added recently include the ability (of property owners) to pay with ... consumer debit cards.’’ Tax payments can be made anytime online at www. riversidetaxinfo.com. Residents can also make payments in person at the tax

collector’s offices in the following locations: 4080 Lemon St. in Riverside; 38-686 El Cerrito Road in Palm Desert; and 40935 County Center Drive, Suite C in Temecula. Credit and debit card payments can be made via the Internet, or by calling (951) 9553900. G.B. Shaw’s “Pygmalion” On Stage at the Pasadena Playhouse By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The brilliant, irascible and prickly Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw never met an upper-class Englishman that he didn’t want to skewer is some way. Mainly, he did it with his blistering wit and biting sense of humor with particular emphasis on the upper-class Edwardians and their way of life and language snobbishness. Drop that “h sound” and you were relegated to the working class or worse – a life apart from the entitlements of those maddening Brits beginning with Queen Victoria. Ireland has produced some pretty fair writers over the years. But arguably, Shaw, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, and Sean O’Casey, are in the upper tier of writers who love to poke their literary fingers into the eyes of those residents just to the east and across the Irish Sea. “Pygmalion”, Shaw’s best known work on this side of the Atlantic shouldn’t be confused with the love child of Alan J. Lerner and Frederick Lowe - “My Fair Lady”. MFL is a musical block-buster that has

forever altered the perception of Shaw’s more erudite and provocative insights into the Anglo and American society of acceptable misogyny. When it comes to Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle, in “My Fair Lady” love triumphs and they fall in love, and everyone lives happily ever after. Americans dearly love happy endings. At the end of “Pygmalion”, however, Shaw insisted that Henry and Eliza do not fall in love and marry. Therefore, please bring your acceptance of an unexpected and ambiguous ending to Shaw’s original interpretation of “Pygmalion”. Staged with intelligence by director Jessica Kubzansky, who has a complete mastery of Shaw, the story, unless you have been living in a cave for the last 100 years, centers around Henry Higgins (Bruce Turk) a comfortable upper-crust English language and phonetics professor who meets Eliza Doolittle (Paige Lindsey White) a cockney flower girl outside Covent Garden following a performance with his friend Colonel Pickering (Stan Egi). Higgins decides, as a lark, that

Photo Credit: Jim Cox. he can turn this flower-selling cockney girl into a proper sounding lady of high society; worthy of attending the annual Governor’s Garden Party Ball in just six months. A wager is placed with his friend Colonel Pickering to seal the deal and the transformation of Eliza into a lady begins. Along this arduous road of re-invention, Shaw throws biting and challenging societal road blocks into the Higgins/ Doolittle dynamic. In short, Eliza resists Henry’s attempts to “civilize” her. He views her as a maddeningly screeching, stubborn, lower-class female creature. His misogynistic tendencies, however, are not lost on his mother, sensibly played by Mary Anne McGarry, who loves her son but is weary of his uncalled for and outspoken comments when in the company of her upper-class lady friends. His friend Colonel Pickering, an enlightened English gentleman, and Mrs. Pearce, Henry’s housekeeper nicely and patiently played by Ellen Crawford, along with a wonderfully comedic performance from Time Winters as Eliza’s dustman father (a garbage collector in America) Alfred P. Doolittle, enliven the talky play. In the musical the narrative threads of the story are propelled by the lyrics.

Bruce Turk’s Higgins is idiosyncratic, properly selfabsorbed, and oblivious to the female sex and to his hormonal urges. He is guarded and slightly smug in Act One, but begins to weaken in Act Two when his latent feelings for Eliza begin to kick in. It’s a nice nuanced study in focus, commitment, and restraint on the part of Turk, despite his leading man good looks and the chemistry between himself and Eliza. Paige Lindsey White’s take on Eliza is different in that she is a strong counter-weight to Henry’s misogyny. A beauty, once Mrs. Pearce cleans her up, even Henry has to take notice. Even before Women’s Voting Rights arrived Eliza was probably on the front lines of the budding movement. When two such well-drawn and interesting characters come together it’s a safe bet that there will be a testing of wills somewhere along the arc of the story. This is the war between the sexes that so fascinated Shaw over the years. His own relationship with Irish Heiress Charlotte Payne-Townsend, whom he married in 1893, was an odd contract. Their marriage was never consummated. Charlotte encouraged Shaw to have affairs with married women. Sort of the first marriage agreement

that we would call today “an open marriage”. Pretty racy and scandalous stuff for 1893 Edwardian England. One of the strengths of the Pasadena Playhouse is their diverse casting choices which has become a Hallmark of their productions. For example, in “Pygmalion” Colonel Pickering is solidly played by Asian-American actor Stan Egi. Freddy EinsfordHill’s sister Clara, is portrayed by young African-American actor Carolyn Ratteray, who dazzles with a beautiful smile and flashing eyes and fits the family profile of any proper English family. Remember, it’s the acting that counts, paraphrasing Bill Clinton’s political slogan of “It’s the economy stupid” of twenty years ago. The creative team led by director Kubzansky is first rate as evidenced by the sumptuous set design by designer Stephanie Kerley Schwartz, and the gorgeous costume designs of Leah Piehl captured in the lighting design Jaymi Lee Smith. It’s good to see Casting Director Julia Flores’ name once again in the program (she has a sharp eye for just the right people to consider for her directors). This highly entertaining “Pygmalion” production runs at The Pasadena Playhouse through April 12, 2015.

PBS Masterpieces on DVD: ‘Grantchester’ and ‘Downton Abbey’ I must confess, I am not usually a mystery fan, but this season PBS aired a six hour “Masterpiece Mystery!” entitled “Grantchester” and I was hooked. The series, based on “The Grantchester Mysteries” by James Runcie, takes place in Grantchester, a village just outside Cambridge, England. It’s 1953 and Sidney Chambers (James Norton “Happy Valley”) is the handsome young vicar who leads a quiet life tending to his flock. He enjoys jazz and has fallen in love with a beautiful young heiress, Amanda Kendall. Things are peaceful and seemingly quiet until one of his parishioners dies under mysterious circumstances. Everyone assumes the man committed suicide, but after the funeral his partner’s wife tells Sydney she is certain he was murdered. In fact she suspects her husband is the killer. At this point Sydney goes to the local police inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green “Wire in the Blood,” “Reckless”) who at first doesn’t want to be bothered. There was a suicide note and that’s good enough for Geordie. But people confide in the young vicar and eventually Sydney convinces Geordie to reconsider the cause of death. Both men enjoy working things out in the local pub over drinks and games of backgammon and eventually a strong friendship develops, despite the fact that one is a man of faith and the other is, in his own words, “a heathen.” Their ever growing friendship is a highpoint in the unfolding stories. “Grantchester” is beautifully written. filled with compelling characters that range from Sydney’s stern, but motherly,

housekeeper, his young assistant vicar and the women he loves, to the colorful characters who live and die in Grantchester. The show is more than just a series of mysteries since the six one-hour dramas also deal with Sydney’s traumatic war memories, his crisis of faith and class conflict. If you missed “Grantchester,” you can buy the series which is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. For more information visit PBS.org. ITV will soon present another season of “Granchester” in Great Britain so we can look forward to another set of adventures featuring Sydney Chambers and Geordie Keating once again on PBS in the near future--so the story will continue and that’s great news! Special features on the DVD include: Behind-the-scenes, Cast interviews, The Making of Grantchester and more.

“Downton Abbey,” described by the New York Times” as an “instant classic” has captivated viewers in England and in the United States. Written by Academy Award-winner Julian Fellows, it stars Hugh Bonneville as the Earl of Grantham who lives in the lavish country manor known as Downton Abbey with his wealthy American wife, Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), their three daughters and his mother played by the wonderful Maggie Smith. This Golden Globe and multiple Emmy Award winning series chronicles the lives of the Crawley family and their servants from pre-war England through World War I and into the social upheaval of England in the 20s. The boxed set of “Downton

Abbey,” Seasons 1,2,3 & 4 comes with an additional 3.5 hours of bonus material. Season 5, which has just concluded, is also now available on DVD. PBS and ITV just announced that the upcoming Season 6 will be the last in the series. Earlier Maggie Smith had said Season 6 would be her last because if it kept on going “I would be over 100.” It will be hard to say goodbye to the Crawleys and all who dwell in Downton Abbey, but if

you buy the series you can enjoy seeing this marvelous series yet again. Also available on Blu-ray or DVD is “The Manners of Downton Abbey” with Alastair Bruce, the historical advisor to Downton Abbey. Learn how the aristocratic Edwardians dined and dressed, married, made money and interacted with their servants and how the servants behaved with one another. Fascinating stuff.

City of Palm Desert Taking Additional Steps to Save Water

By Desert Star Weekly PALM DESERT, CA– In response to California’s extreme drought and Governor Jerry Brown’s recent mandatory statewide restrictions on water use, the City of Palm Desert is implementing additional water conservation measures. Beginning immediately in some locations and implemented in phases throughout the community over the next two weeks, the City will reduce irrigation of roadway medians by 25 percent. Palm Desert was one of the first communities in California to plant desert landscaping in a majority of its medians. Even though these medians have contained this water wise landscaping for many years, the vegetation is expected to show

signs of stress as a result of the change. Irrigation will also be reduced in the El Paseo median. The smaller 10 percent reduction in landscape irrigation on the El Paseo median is due to the recent installation of a water-conserving irrigation system that has already significantly reduced water use there. Palm Desert City Manager John Wohlmuth said the City has Palm Desert has consistently been a leader in conservation and efforts to save water such as Palm Desert’s early and extensive use of desert landscaping and the tens of thousands of dollars in turf buyback rebates it has offered to residents and businesses the past several years.

“The City of Palm Desert has picked the low hanging fruit already,” Wohlmuth said. “Now we are setting the ladder to pick the fruit that is more difficult to reach.” In addition to the aforementioned water saving measures in the medians, the City is reducing irrigation in Palm Desert’s Civic Center Park by 10 percent and in all other City parks by 25 percent. All watering, with the exception of irrigation system testing, will be done at night to minimize evaporation. Landscaping will be closely monitored to minimize plant loss. Park visitors will probably notice changes such as brown leaves and patches in the grass. In addition, the misting

systems at City parks will not be turned on this year. A single emitter in a misting system uses approximately one gallon of water per hour. Each park misting system includes approximately 100 emitters, which means that approximately 100 gallons of fresh potable water are lost for every hour of operation at each misting location. The City is also turning off the water play feature at Joe Mann Park. This park amenity uses 10 gallons of water per minute when it is on. If it is activated for only 15 minutes of each hour of the day, this would result in the loss of about 1,500 gallons of water per day. As previously mentioned, Palm Desert has a long and excellent

history of water conservation, including meeting the tight water budgets implemented by the Coachella Valley Water District in recent years. The City irrigation systems are routinely rated in the 98 percent efficient range. We continuously monitor our water use to minimize waste and expense. Staff at the City will continue to work closely with Coachella Valley Water District staff to further improve efficiencies in the use of water. For more information about Palm Desert’s water conservation measures, please call 760-3460611, ext. 450.

Joshua Tree Music Festival May 14-16

By Desert Star Staff JOSHUA TREE, CA - April may be packed with two big music festivals in Indio, but the high desert is preparing for their own mini-Burning Man to take place May 14-16. The 13th annual Joshua Tree Music Festival is poised to entertain five to six thousand revelers who appreciate the eccentricities of the Burning Man festivals, but in a more intimate and accessible setting of the Joshua Tree RV Lake Campground. Merging its funky desert style with an internationally acclaimed lineup of musical artists, this three day (and four night) familyfriendly festival is truly a global music experience. The festival melds the overwhelming spirit of desert freedom with powerful music from around the world to create a lighthearted oasis for music lovers. Magically magnificent art

installations, a robust Kidsville schedule, the heavily shaded Music Bowl, a full spectrum of yoga classes from sunrise to sunset, 27 different music playshops and didjeridu classes, late-night Astronomy theatre, and a World Market further inspire, intrigue and invite festival goers. Discover your new favorite band and dozens of new friends in the shadows of the otherworldly Joshua Tree National Park. The spring line-up features the world’s funkiest diplomat, the Polish Ambassador, Australia’s urban roots powerhouse Blue King Brown, revolutionary rockers the Last Internationale, the deep pocket dirty funk live-tronica of the Floozies, electro – samba pioneers Bossacucanova (Brazil), bio-dynamic trance dancers Airtist (Austria), the electrified African grooves of Driscoll & Kouyate, full throttle rock and roll by Black Pistol Fire (Canada);

By Desert Star Staff Jewish Federation of the Desert’s supporters at Tamarisk Country Club welcomed Rancho Mirage, David Siegel, Consul General of Israel based out of Los Angeles, recently. Mr. Siegel’s thought-provoking presentation entitled “ISRAEL: New Challenges. New Opportunities,” was very timely and touched on many newsworthy topics, including the recent Israeli Elections and the controversial Iran deal with Washington. Since arriving in Los Angeles in 2011, David Siegel has become the most sought after voice representing the State of Israel. Prior to his current post, Siegel was Chief of Staff to Israel’s

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and was intimately involved in formulating policy at Israel’s most senior levels. Chief of Staff at the Israeli Embassy during two U.S. Administrations, Siegel was the voice of Israel to the Washington press corps. He has been deeply involved in policy coordination with the State Department, the National Security Council and The White House. Seen in the crowd of s u p p o r t e r s w e re B r u c e Landgarten, Helene Galen, Jamie Kabler, Elliott Cohen, Margie Kulp, and Libby Hoffman. the soul power supreme of Con Brio, and the Latino global bass party that is Subsuelo. Thirty three artists representing over 15 countries, with just one band live at a time so you don’t miss a beat. An eclectic line-up, artfully sequenced throughout the weekend for maximum impact. For the full line-up and festival info, log onto: www. joshuatreemusicfestival.com The Joshua Tree Music Festivals (there are two each year, with the 10th Annual Fall JTMF happening October 8-11) are intimate, communitycentric, artistically infused and highly participatory affairs. They capture the DIY funkiness of the high desert, turning rusted junk into striking art, old trailers into stages, and a shaded stretch of campground on the outskirts of the infamous national park into a family friendly global music experience. Focusing on up-and-

coming artists, the festival has a penchant for picking about-tobreak names, from Deer Tick to Trombone Shorty, Edward Sharpe to Brett Dennen, the Avett Brothers to Toubab Krewe, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Chicano Batman, Trampled by Turtles, Greensky Bluegrass, Valerie June and more. JTMF is produced by a family of friends and funsters convinced that music is the soul of life, and that art enriches and saves lives. The festival is constructed around one Music bowl, with two alternating stages. “It’s the combination of the magical setting, the music and the people that leads to epiphanic moments. We’ve created a space that enables folks to spend more time together with the ability to not miss any of the music.” Those ‘shared experiences’ are where you find the magic. Kidsville is

action packed, and people rate JTMF as one of the few festivals that truly caters to the entire family. There is no ‘nosebleed’ section, white tent, long lines or yellow-jacketed security details. Instead find instant community with nonstop interaction, as folks gather under the billowing shade cloth (over 30,000 square feet of shade flying over the stages and audience), while soaking up the sonic celebrations of the inspired artists. This intimate affair is splashed with ‘conversation stopping’ golden sunsets and star-filled desert night skies. The desert is freedom; music is power, and community is crucial. Tap into this magical trifecta and get your JTMF tickets now! joshuatreemusicfestival.com/ tickets.html

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (626) 579-5350 or visit this Internet Web site , using the file number assigned to this case 14-12-801. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. 04/01/2015 Lender’s Foreclosure Services, As Trustee _________Sylvia L. Ramos, Senior Trustee’s Sale Officer. Tips to Trace Your Family’s Past

By Desert Star Staff Were your ancestors humble farmers or wealthy nobility? Did they travel to find their fortune or have they always lived close to your current home? Exploring your genealogy can be fascinating. In the 2010 U.S. Census, 34.7 million Americans claimed Irish ancestry, the nation’s second most frequently reported ancestry, representing more than

seven times the population of Ireland itself. Those of Irish descent, or those who suspect they have some Irish in them, may be inclined to do some research to prove their Irish heritage. Now, the process may be even more revealing, as a new set of records is now available online which tells the harrowing tales of families in the Great Irish Famine. “The Great Famine caused

widespread starvation and disease in Ireland 1845-52. Over one million people died, and one million emigrated, many bound for the United States,” says Brian Donovan, Irish records expert at Findmypast, an online family history site. “The records of their arrival can help many Irish-Americans put together the pieces of their family story.” “Family history is much more than facts and statistics. It’s an

By Claudia Lauer Associated Press LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) Just days after becoming the world’s oldest documented person, 116-year-old Gertrude Weaver died Monday in Arkansas. Weaver became the oldest person in the world after the death of a 117-year-old Japanese woman last week, according to records kept by the Los Angelesbased Gerontology Research Group. Weaver was born in 1898. The Williams Funeral Home confirmed Weaver died just after 10 a.m. Monday at the Silver Oaks Health and Rehabilitation

Center in Camden, about 100 miles southwest of Little Rock. Camden Mayor Marie Tr i s o l l i n i c h a t t e d w i t h Weaver last week when the supercentenarian’s roommate celebrated her 100th birthday. “She was a really sweet lady. She was relatively perky and coherent when I talked with her before the party,” Trisollini said. “When you asked for advice on how to live a long life she would say, ‘Use a lot of skin moisturizer, treat everyone nice, love your neighbor and eat your own cooking. Don’t eat at fast food places.’” The Research Group was able to verify Weaver’s age using

census records and a marriage certificate from 1915 that listed her age as 17. Other records pointed to a possible April birthday, but since those could not be confirmed, the group used the day Weaver had always celebrated her birthday - July 4. Trisollini said the nursing home and several members of the community had been making plans for Weaver’s 117th birthday party. Weaver, who was born in southwest Arkansas to sharecropper parents, told nursing home staff last week that she wanted to invite President Barack Obama because she had voted for him twice. opportunity to discover your story and connect with your family – past, present and future,” says Donovan. So how do you go about discovering yours? Here are tips for getting started: Building a Family Tree: Start by building your family tree with information you have already. When you’re done, ask family members to contribute their knowledge. Important information to gather includes names, dates, life details, stories, romances, physical descriptions and anecdotes. Interviews: Sit down with relatives for interviews, starting with older relatives first. Faceto-face is ideal However, phone calls or video chatting work well too. Record the interviews to help with your research later or merely to serve as a memento. You may hear inconsistencies in stories from relative-to-relative, but avoid interrupting or asking leading questions. Ask to see family photos, certificates and other documents. If you have any to share, bring them along to help jog more memories. Search Online Records: Register with a website that can help you explore your family history. A good choice for those

of Irish descent is Findmypast, which among its two billion historical records from around the globe, boasts the best and by far the largest online collection of Irish records, and an extensive archive of British and Irish newspapers. Their Irish records date as far back as the 14th century, including estate records, military, prison and court records, and passenger lists. Searchable transcriptions and scans of original historical records from Ireland, the U.S. and beyond make it easy to trace your family tree back hundreds of years. Common setbacks to genealogical research, such as variations on spellings of names, are hurdles that are easier to overcome using certain features on the site. Findmypast also offers plenty of resources and tips to help you discover facts and organize the information, including an easy to use online family tree builder. To subscribe, or try a free trial visit www. findmypast.com. In the past, family history research could, at times, be a difficult and laborious process. Now, with online records and features, it’s easier and more fun than ever before. StatePoint

DESERTSCAPES: Peripheral Visions

By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, CA— College of the Desert’s (COD) Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts presents “Desertscapes: Peripheral Visions,” an exhibition of artwork featuring the desert landscape by Mary-Austin Klein, Victory Tischler-Blue, and AnnaMarie Veloz, from Mar. 9 to Apr. 9, 2015. An artist’ talks and a closing reception are scheduled for Thursday, April 9. Mary-Austin Klein and Anna-Marie Veloz will speak about their work at 3 p.m. in the Business Building Room 2 on the Palm Desert Campus. The reception will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Marks Art Center. The Renderers will provide musical entertainment, a New Zealand duo now based in Yucca Valley who create sounds capes of intimate psychedelia infused with Americana and noise. Both events are free and open to the public. “Desertscapes: Peripheral Visions” presents three solo exhibitions that together shift our perspective on landscape and beauty. The images of all three artists are exquisitely beautiful, but what they show us is not the unspoiled and pristine natural vistas of traditional landscape art. Rather, these artists shift our focus to the less obvious beauty along the edges of our

field of vision—on the edge of development, of civilization, of decay, of joy and of despair. The sublime post-industrial architecture of the desert’s nether regions is sweeping and immense. The light and space play with our sense of scale, troubling our sense of identity, and our understanding of location. Epic and disquieting, these images sound a minor chord that resonates with melancholy and mystery. While some of the work in the exhibit is on loan from private collections, original work is available for sale directly from the artists, and prints and cards based on watercolors paintings by Anna-Marie Veloz are also available for sale at the Marks Art Center. Born in San Bernardino, Mary-Austin Klein (www. maryaustinklein.com) is a painter who divides her time between her home in Los Angeles and a 1950s-era desert homestead cabin in Twenty-nine Palms. Trained at Otis Art Institute, Klein has developed a following of collectors who appreciate the detailed realism of her exquisite, small-scale oil paintings. A desert native of Hesperia, Anna-Marie Veloz (www. annamarieveloz.com) is inspired by the dilapidated buildings and abandoned landscapes of the Mojave Desert’s outer

limits. Inhabitance is the title of her recent body of miniature sculptures based on decaying desert structures. These haunting tableaux evoke the utopian hopes and dreams of past settlement, illustrating the contradictions inherent in the history of western expansion. Veloz teaches art at Victor Valley College, w h e re s h e e a r n e d a n associate’s degree prior to transferring to Azusa Pacific University for her undergraduate

and graduate degrees. Victory Tischler-Blue (www. sacreddogs.com) is a motion picture director/producer and fine-art photographer whose starkly beautiful images evoke a deep sense of tension and cinematic drama. A former member of the iconic ‘70s allgirl rock band the Runaways, which also launched the careers of Joan Jett and Lita Ford, Tischler-Blue currently divides her time between homes in Los

Angeles, Laguna Beach, and a Spanish hacienda in Palm Springs, California. Desertscapes is a monthlong series of events organized to showcase artwork inspired by the desert landscape, celebrating the heritage of traditional pleinair painting while simultaneously exploring historical and contemporary landscape art in relation to the history, culture, science, and people of the desert southwest.
