KNC Winners Story and Photos by Pat Krause American Lexi Thompson, Just 19 years old won the KNC championship on Sunday with a score of -14. The closest competitor was another American Michelle Wie with a score of -11. Wie was never quite able to catch Lexi on the last day. Lexi played great golf and her putter seemed to be a best friend on the course. It was nice to see so many American
Golfers on the top 10 leader board. Former KNC winner Stacey Lewis came in 3rd with Cristie Kerr and Si Ri Pak who lives in Florida tied for 4th. Lexi is the second youngest player to win the KNC. Morgan Pressel won it when she was just 18. It seems there are a lot of young up-and-coming stars in the LPGA. Michelle Wie played in the KNC when she was just 13 years old and was happy with
the way she played this year. She was hoping to be able to jump into Poppies Pond, but it will have to wait until another day. Lexi Thompson did get to make the jump into Poppies Pond and did it with her family, caddie and others. It has become a tradition to make the jump with several people instead of just the winner or the winner and her caddie. It is also a tradition to have fellow players and family

This first Major of the year is the one most of the LPGA players want to win because of the Leap into the water that has become so famous over the years. Lexi took home a check for $300,000, A painting and much more. Michelle Wie won over $187,000 for second place and Stacy Lewis over $136,000
for third. A nice payday for our American LPGA women. This is the last year the Kraft Nabisco will be a sponsor for the tournament. Let’s hope that someone will pick up where they left off and make it an even bigger and better tournament. The players and fans want this tournament to be the best of the LPGA tour.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 4th annual Celebrity Doodles was held this year at the Palm Springs Air Museum on April 5th. Over 300 people attended this years function. The name Celebrity Doodles is just that. Over 100 celebrities donated a form of doodle to be auctioned off for Desert AIDS Project. A Silent auction was held and then during the program, there were a few special items that were sold in a live auction. Honorees were Suzanne Somers and her husband Alan Hamel. Bill Feingold filled in as an award presenter when Leeza Gibbons had to cancel at the last minute. Emcees were Matthew J. Dowden and Erin Quill. Dowden wowed the crowd with his magician tricks, and Erin was great selling on the live auction. Erin got Suzanne Somers to donate an autographed Thighmaster and even got her to demonstrate it. Other celebrities attending were Music Icon Barry Manilow, who arrived with Lorna Luft. Jack and Eleonora Jones, Kaye Ballard, Susan Anton and Ruta Lee to name just a few. Barry Manilow donated a piece of autographed sheet music for the live auction. Other celebrities donating to the cause were Olivia Newton-John, Lily Tomlin, Dr. Phil, Marie Osmond, Bob Mackie, Rosie O’Donall, Sam Harris, Jack Jones, Leslie Jordan, Ruta Lee, Del Shores, Vanessa Williams and so many others. Doodles can be any form of idea from a scribbled sheet of paper to a more elaborate form of art. The highlight of the evening was when Gammy Nominated Taylor Dayne performed for the crowd.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The KNC LPGA championship found some of the top women players trying to win the coveted KNC cup and the chance to jump into Poppies Pond. Players on the first tee got a look at the trophy and teed off in front of it. Each team had a standard bearer Marine from the 29 Palms Marine base. An announcer gave each pro players name and where they were from and then would announce the title of the Marine that was that teams’ Standard Bearer. Some of the Marines brought family members to walk along with them on the golf course. Each Marine got a standing ovation from the crowd. Top names and the most recognized names in women’s Golf were Paula Creamer, Julie Inkster, Natalie Gulbis, Karrie Webb, Michelle Wie, Kari Webb, Morgan Pressell and Lexi Thompson to name a few. The gallery could follow their favorite player each day. There was an autograph booth for the players after they finished their round for the day.

Reasons to Consider Not to Retire
By Janice Gough Recently I met with a client who wished to evaluate her income during retirement. During our conversation, she talked about how she had developed many great systems for her employer and how this had been such a rewarding contribution in her working years. We then approached the discussion of the possibility to continue working. She loved her work, so I ask her why she would even consider leaving. In China, employees do not retire; they move to parttime positions and lesser duties. I felt that this could be the best solution for her. The number-one concern

for retirees is if their income outlasts them. Even though my client accumulated a nice nest egg, many things can happen to change the needed income. It is important to know that your portfolio will continue to produce a reasonable rate of return even during retirement in order to keep up with inflation and rising costs. Health and environment catastrophes could also drain the nest egg. Knowing that you can continue your work brings many benefits, although aiding your income may be one of them, the positive effects of staying active and involved has proven effects of overall happiness. While working may be considered stressful, retirement is not necessarily a picnic either. Several studies have linked stepping out of the rat race with an increase in health problems. The number-one concern is that if you do retire, how successful you would be to get back in. A few employers discriminate against older job applicants. Today’s market wants the younger ages as their pay scale is less. An existing employer who has been happy with your performance is more likely to make concessions to
keep you working. Another consideration is family. If something happens with you children’s job or health, they may be coming home for help. Unanticipated concerns may drain your income substantially.

The CDP is operated by the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally-chartered Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) training facility in the nation. The Technical Emergency Response Training for CBRNE Incidents course is a four-day training course providing an

Since January 1, 2014 there have been a total of eight IMD cases, four of which were reported among MSM, including three men who were HIV-positive. There have been three deaths, all occurring in MSM, two of whom were HIVpositive. In contrast to previous IMD investigations in 2012 and 2013, some commonalities were found among the 2014 cases. Of the four IMD cases among MSM, three reported residence or socializing around the West Hollywood and North Hollywood areas, and three were between 27-28 years of age – with the fourth case being 50 years old. “Although we don’t think there is a reason for panic, we hope that our local population will protect themselves,” continued Brinkman. “There is no need to make an appointment, just show up at D.A.P.’s medical clinic between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM and ask for a meningitis vaccine.”

Anti-Aging Secrets of Alcohol
By Art Kunkin Mr. Life extension I was 52 years old in 1980 and had dedicated myself to search for the rumored secret held by the ancient and generally discredited science of alchemy that humans could live in health and happiness for hundreds of years if they used secret alchemical medicines. One small clue I was following in 1980 was that the term “spirits” used for alcohol in every corner liquor store in the United States and throughout the world was actually a term given to alcohol thousands of years ago by ancient alchemists. This was because this ancient science believed that when grapes were fermented, the alcohol that results was actually the life spirit of the plant. Considered this way, alcohol and other material substances, were not dead chemical molecules as modern science believes but living substances that could be used to formulate new living medicines for evolving human beings to new and desirable levels of existence. That’s why I moved to Salt Lake City in 1980 to enroll in the seven year apprenticeship program at Paracelsus College, named after the famous 16th century alchemist. It was there that I learned how to make www.desertstarweekly.com
herbal and mineral medicines that preserved the life force of their components, medicines that I still use at age 86. And when in February of this year I received a mailing from Florida Medical Doctor Al Sears about how modern science is coming to see the anti-aging virtues of alcohol, I saw the importance of communicating his information to the readers of this newspaper even though I have no room to say more about alchemy as such. Here is what Dr. Sears says. “Drinking 12 to 35 grams of alcohol each day (about an ounce, no more each day) reduces the likelihood of cancer by 65% for men and 60% for women.” (As evidence for these numbers, Dr. Sears cites the study in the scientific publication, Dis Colon Rectum, “Alcohol Consumpotion And Colorectcal
Cancer In A Mediterranean Population, 2013;55(6): 703710.” Another quotation from Dr. Sears, “Drinking a glass of beer will lower your chance of heart disease by up to 41%.” (Evidence for this statistic is given in the European Journal of Epidemiology, “Wine, Beer Or Spirit Drinking In Relation To Fatal and Non-Fatal Cardiolvascular Events, A Meta-Analysis, 2011 Nov; 26(11):833-850.” Another statistic quoted by Dr. Sears. “Light To Moderate Beer Drinking Decreases The Risk Of Stroke In Women by 20%, cited in the New England Journal Of Medicine, 1988; 319(5):267-273.” And more from Dr. Sears, “Men who have 1 to 6 drinks a week have an average 20% lower risk of death from all
casues than those who don’t drink at all, cited in Journal of The American College Of Cardiology, 2000;35(1):96-105.” Dr. Sears (remember that he is an M.D.) then cites new research that gives a modern scientific explanation why moderate alcohol consumption helps prevent disease, improves health and extends life (without referring to ancient alchemy, of course). He says that researchers at Tel Aviv University and at University Hospital in Finland wanted to expand on Elizabeth Blackburn’s research on telomeres. Ms. Blackburn won the 2009 Nobel Prize for proving that shortened telomeres results in less longevity (telomeres are the caps of the DNA strands that determine genetic inheritance). These studies in Israel and Finland proved that caffeine (coffee and tea) shortened telomeres, shortening life, while moderate alcohol consumption is healthy and extends life because this helps maintain the length of telomeres or even makes them longer. If you would like to receive Dr/ Al Sears emails directly, you can email him at AlSearsMd@ AlSearsMD.com. As a journalist I receive his emails free of charge but I suspect he will send these emails at no charge to anyone who requests them because he has medical products for sale. Footnote: Over 50 people attended my 86th birthday party at the Joshua Tree Radio Listening Lounge on Friday, April 4, and seemed to have a very good time. I look forward to seeing you at my 87th birthday party in 2015, time and place to be announced here. ‘Muppets Most Wanted’ – A Clever Comedy
In 2011 the Muppets appeared in a film written by and starring Jason Segel (TVs “How I Met your Mother”). In the movie, entitled “The Muppets,” Kermit searches for all of his Muppet pals, hoping to revive their stage careers. In their newest flick, “Muppets Most Wanted,” they are back together again in Hollywood. They have completed the film described above and kick off their new adventure dressed in snazzy white Chorus Line costumes, complete with white top hats. Their opening number is a tuneful show stopper. Now the big question on their collective minds is—what will they do next? The answer comes in the form of Dominic Badguy, (Ricky Gervais) who pronounces his name Bad-gee, telling the Muppets his name is French. He has come to serve as their manager on a whirlwind stage tour throughout Europe. Kermit is skeptical, but all the other Muppets convince Kermit that the tour is a great idea. Little do they know that Badguy is literally a bad guy who is partnered with the evil criminal Constantine, a Russian frog that is currently incarcerated in a Siberian gulag. Constantine, a dead ringer for Kermit if Kermit had a big black beauty mark on his green face and a Russian accent, has plans to escape from Siberia, and he does. He then frames Kermit by gluing a black beauty mark

on Kermit’s face. Now our hero resembles the wanted posters. He is quickly captured and sent to Siberia in Constantine’s place. Kermit is confident the other Muppets will realize he
is missing and come for him, but only one Muppet suspects that something is wrong—,and it isn’t Miss Piggy. At this point, the crime spree begins as Badguy and

Constantine start robbing art museums in search of a hidden treasure. Meanwhile, Kermit, now sporting a black spot on his face, is stuck in a Siberian gulag run by Comrade Nadya (Tina Fey). Determined to put on a Broadway-like show for her fellow guards, Nadja tells Kermit he must create a show, direct it and use his fellow inmates. He can’t convince her that he is not Constantine, but at least she is calling him Kermit now, and it is obvious she is smitten with the talented little frog. Using the talents of fellow prisoners like Ray Liotta and Danny Trejo, Kermit does what he is told to do and the results are hilarious. This part of the movie alone is worth the price of admission. Soon Nadja, like Piggy, has fallen madly in love with Kermit. As Kermit has often lamented, “it’s not easy being green,” especially in Siberia. Meanwhile, Constantine, who has put green makeup over his black beauty mark, is robbing great art museums all over Europe with the help of his number two cohorts Badguy. It sounds complicated but who cares. It all makes sense in the end, and the journey is lots of fun. Ty Burell (TV’s “Modern Family”) adds a lot of comedic flair as a Paris Inspector who resembles the inept Inspector Clouseau of “Pink Panther”
fame. He is teamed up with a CIA agent, a Muppet Eagle with a bigger badge than Burell’s. Soon their inflated egos’ clash as they try to solve the crimes being committed along the Muppet Tour route. Their comic interplay is perfect for adults and kids in the audience. This lively Muppet confection has romance, comedy, crime capers, double crosses, crosses, mistaken identity, musical numbers plus cameo appearances by Lady Gaga, Christoph Waltz, Usher, Celine Dion (who duet’s with Piggy), Tony Bennett and one of the noble inhabitants from TVs “Downton Abbey.” And who is that singing deep inside a gulag dungeon? Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” is rated PG for some mild action. Note: The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood presents “The Muppets Most Wanted” with a live stage show featuring the talents of Kermit and Miss Piggy. Following the stage show you can enjoy an extensive display of Muppet props and costumes, including Animals drum set and Miss Piggy’s wardrobe and wedding gown. The Center’s production of this uproarious comedy by Ken Ludwig, who is also known the world over for his comedy Lend Me A Tenor, will light-up the stage and prove to be one of the year’s finest. The hilarious Moon Over Buffalo centers on George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950s. At the moment, they’re playing Private Lives and Cyrano De Bergerac in rep in Buffalo, New York with five actors. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliance with a young ingénue, they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to watch their matinee, and if likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Unfortunately, for George
and Charlotte, everything that could go wrong does go wrong, abetted by a visit from their daughter’s clueless fiancé and hilarious uncertainty about which play they’re actually performing, caused by Charlotte’s deaf old stagemanager mother who hates every bone in George’s body. Moon Over Buffalo will play at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s Blak Box Theater April 4-19, 2014. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7pm, and a special Saturday matinee April 12 at 2pm. What an honor and privilege it has been to collaborate with other service dog academies, to provide much-needed care to those who have valiantly served our country.” Graduates being presented are from Torrance, Northridge, Beaumont, California and Phoenix, Arizona. Taste of Sunnylands” featuring fifteen favorite recipes from the Annenberg Family Cookbook debuted. The sold out event attracted over 475 guests. Walter and Lenore
Annenberg called Sunnylands their “winter home” and while residing here, beginning in 1966, they welcomed America seven American presidents and the first Ladies. Queen Elizabeth II and April 9, 2014
Prince Philip among notables. The Annenberg’s elegant dinners, informal buffet lunches and parties were kaleidoscope of events where celebrities from Bob and Dolores Hope, Arnold Palmer and Gregory Peck mingled. Frank and Barbara Sinatra were married here in 1977, where Mrs. Sinatra’s Halston wedding dress is currently exhibited. The elegance of this era was echoed on the eve of March 25th beginning at 7 p.m. when a flurry of parking valets met guests who were graciously welcomed at the entrance of Sunnylands, where the desert inspired gardens were in blossom. Fifteen chefs represented local restaurants and catering companies with bite size appetizers, desserts, salads and main courses inspired by the original recipes from a clever five by seven-inch cookbook containing pull out recipes’ cards for Annenberg favorites such from smoked salmon pizza with red onion & dill to zesty lemon squares. The project director for “A Taste of Sunnylands” was Janice Lyle, Ph.D. with Carla Breer Howard the project manager and author. Chef Roland Bieri was responsible for the food preparation and styling. “ DJBob” Satchell was
spinning the retro music he calls the ‘Sinatra Sound’as guests sampled original recipes recreated such as Leonore Annenberg’s salad interpreted by Walley’s Desert Turtle, where the line was nonstop! Participating restaurants and caterers included Cellos An American Bistro in Cathedral City and in Palm Springs, El Mirasol Cocina Mexicana, and Kitchen Wo r k s h o p i n P a l m Springs . PS Underground ( “a wandering supper club”) which can be reached through the ShareKitchen also in Cathedral City and Love at First Bite, catering and event planning was part of the mix. Continuing the tradition of gracious hospitality that former First Lady Nancy Regan described as “ heavenly” is evident at Sunnylands. Each guest was presented with a first edition of A Taste of Sunnylands, featuring never before seen photographs of “relaxed guests” ( Colin Powell, Brooke Astor, Armand Deutsch) intermingled with recipes for Cold Lemon Souffle and Raspberry Bombe. A Taste of Sunnylands can be purchased in their gift shop ( $20). For more information, www. sunnylands.org

Congressman Ruiz speaks up for Salton Sea
At the Town Hall Forum, Temple Sinai are Jack Olshansky, President with Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D. 36th District with Beatrice Eslamboly, incoming President. (Photo by Donna Raider)
By Pamela Price A Town-Hall Forum presented by Temple Sinai in Palm Desert on April 6th featured Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz addressing several topics of local interest during his hour-long talk, “How I Came to Understand Israel-A Personal Journey.” He began by describing his experiences with Israeli humanitarian efforts when he arrived in Haiti after their earthquake disaster in 2010. This led to his visiting Israel in 2013 with 35 members of Congress, during which time he met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres. While international politics were on the minds of many attending this forum, it was also the subject of the Salton Sea and its future that triggered comment. Congressman Ruiz, a physician with three degrees
from Harvard University and a specialist in public health and disaster relief compared the environmental impact of the Salton Sea to a patient in need of emergency care. He discussed an immediate solution referring to the restoration goals of Red Hill Bay project. Images taken by the Congressman journey through Israel revealed the similarities between their desert and the Coachella Valley. While comparing an image of the receding Salton Sea to the Dead Sea, he remarked that both Israel and the U.S., are addressing the issue of drought. According to the National Geographic Daily News ( Feb. 14, 2014) “the Salton Sea is the largest lake in California and one of the most heavily used bird habitats in the U.S..” . It is currently in danger of drying up. After covering relevant
political and environmental issues from the international to the local level, one of the questions asked during the “Q & A” was the Congressman’s thoughts on “2020” meaning that year’s Presidential election. After answering a dozen questions with direct, yet diplomatic accuracy, it was obvious there is a rising well of support for him in the 36th District. Glenn Ettman, Rabbi of Temple Sinai along with Jack Olshansky. President and Beatrice Eslamboly, incoming President greeted arriving guests to the program which is organized by Temple’s Social Action Committee and open to the public free of charge. For information on upcoming event’s contact, Temple Sinai at www.templesinaipd.org or (760) 568 9699.

Imperial Valley Off-Roading - IV SCORE 250 By Desert Star Staff The event begins on April 25th through April 27th with the actual race day being Saturday April 26th. Off-roaders from all over the country and Mexico are expected to participate in the race and with them, scores of enthusiasts descending upon the desert community where dirt dreams are made. The race is sponsored by SCORE International, the El Centro Chamber of Commerce, City of El Centro along with many area businesses. The race area is located just west of El Centro California in Imperial County with the area bordering just minutes from Mexicali Mexico. The region is prime for formal off-road racing as the desert to the west, the famous Glamis sand dunes and the Colorado river to the east are already key locations for offroaders. The region also offers good roads and easy access for travelers from all directions and amenities that can be difficult to find in some locations are readily available in the area. The Imperial Valley is indeed home to many off-road enthusiasts as local businesses also clamored to bring the IV 250 to El Centro with the likes of Marty Coyne owner of the IV Cycle Center “I participated in many off-road races and this is huge for Imperial Valley to have a SCORE race here. We are working diligently to make the IV 250 a race of all races” says Coyne who is also on the committee for the IV 250. “Having the race in the Imperial Valley is just a fantastic venue and can certainly pave the way for more racing in the area” says
CEO of SCORE International Roger Norman “the race provides a great opportunity for off-road racers on both sides of the border”. Contingency, the event that brings out all off-roading vehicles for safety inspections will be held at the Imperial Valley Mall in El Centro on Friday April 25th with the race beginning on Saturday April 26th with the start line near Wheeler Road. Spectator and driver safety is priority one for the IV 250 with proper safety markers (see map). “Imperial Valley’s logistics are perfect for this kind of event. As a past SCORE race series participant I can attest that this is the best area.” says Rob Zimmer owner of Spectrum Advertising and IV 250 committee member. “I want to see everyone have a great and safe time. When watching the race be sure to leave racers plenty of room and stay a safe distance from the track and pay attention to signage. Off road racing is not like pavement racing. The race coarse is eroded every time a vehicle passes. Part of what makes viewing fun and hazardous is the dynamics the soil creates as it changes.” says Zimmer. SCORE International is famous for its flagship event, the Baja 1000, as well as the Baja 500 and the San Felipe 250. Founded by Mickey Thompson in 1973, SCORE continues today under the direction of Roger Norman who purchased SCORE from Sal Fish in 2012. For more information, please visit ivscore250.com.

s p o rt s Sickness Wont Stop Aztecs’ Kato dvl BaseBall Roundup By daniel maRinelli
PALM DESERT – Despite pre and early game sickness, Aztecs’ star pitcher Brody Kato persevered and led Palm Desert to its second 7-0 shutout of the Xavier Prep High School Saints this week. For Kato, Friday’s biggest obstacle came with two outs in the bottom of the first inning – when Kato turned his back to home plate, and lost his lunch. With the first inning’s final out yet to be recorded, Kato walked back to the top of the mound – and with a determined look on his face – yanked his hat down to his eyebrows, and proceeded to dominate the Saints. “[Kato] knows how to play out there,” Aztecs head coach Darol Salazar said. “He’s played so much baseball; he’s really comfortable in this environment.” Despite his queasiness, the All-CIF hopeful struck out seven Saints on his way to a complete game shutout. Additionally, Kato allowed a stingy four hits on 94 pitches, and prevented Xavier Prep from advancing one runner to third base, all game. Domination is nothing new for Kato this season. With a record of 5-1, a total of 29 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.78, Kato looks like the DVL’s No. 1 pitcher. Having the league’s best pitcher, however, does not always translate to wins. To solidify their sixth consecutive DVL title, the Aztecs, like any great team, have to use what has gotten them this
enviable opportunity – errorless defense, exceptional pitching, timely hitting and occasional small ball. The exact way the Aztecs approached the game at Xavier Prep High School. “We feel that if you’re a good team, then you just go out – and we call it Aztec baseball,” said Coach Salazar. “You play Aztec baseball, and make them play up to our level and our speed. We try and stay on an even keel, and play the same way every game.” The Aztecs got on the scoreboard early with an Andrew Bash sacrifice fly in the first inning. In the following inning, after recording the first out, Saints starting pitcher Rex Rover walked two batters, gave up hits to Kyle Kabeary and Gil Sauceda, a Travis Moniot sacrifice fly, and quickly, the score was 4-0 Aztecs. Rover gave up one more run before the Saints brought in Justin Braun to pitch the seventh. On four hits and a sacrifice fly, Palm Desert added two more runs off Braun in the seventh inning to runaway with its fourth consecutive victory. “We want to take what they give us,” said Coach Salazar. “If a pitcher is struggling, we’re going to work late in the count, if the pitcher is throwing strikes we’re going to hit early in the count.” The Aztecs followed their coach’s advice to a tee. Palm Desert appeared to take advantage of Rover’s inability to find the strike zone in the early innings. In the final inning, the
Aztecs benefited off of Bruan’s strike throwing by swinging their bats early and effectively. Junior Gil Sauceda went 3-4 with two stolen bases and an RBI for the Aztecs. Aztecs junior leadoff batter Travis Moniot finished 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. To go along with his gutsy pitching performance, Kato went 2-4 with a run scored. On Saturday, the Fontanabased Kaiser High School Cats – one of the more difficult baseball teams in California – snapped the Aztecs’ brief win streak. In spite of not having the best overall record
in the DVL, the Aztecs (10-6 Overall, 2-0 in DVL) -believe they will be most prepared DVL team come playoffs. “When we were .500, we lost to some really good teams,” Coach Salazar said. “And we beat some really good teams. We beat Mater Dei and JSerra, who are 1-2 in the in the Trinity League – arguably one of the best leagues in the country. We play a very tough preseason to get us ready for league and the playoffs.” Like they always are, the Aztecs will indeed be ready for the playoffs next month, but there
are still games left to play before they get there. On Tuesday, Palm Desert got back into league play with a home matchup against the respectable Cathedral City High School Lions. On Friday, Palm Desert travels to Cathedral City to play the Lions. Xavier Prep started its series with the Palm Springs High School Indians on Tuesday at Palm Springs High School. Palm Springs travels to Xavier Prep High School on Thursday to face the Saints. The games on Thursday and Friday start at 3:15 pm.
