Holy Smoke! Dramatic footage captures moment aircraft douses California wildfire By Desert Star Staff Spectacular footage captured at the scene of a California wildfire has laid bare the scale of the Holy fire disaster as well as the
size of the operation being mounted to combat it. Some 6,200 acres (25 sq km) of land has been burned in the fires since Wednesday, according the
Orange County Register. Officials are wary that the fire could threaten more homes if the wind were to change direction or the fire were to branch into drainage basins.
KMIR News Staff A 51-year-old man was charged Thursday with arson for allegedly setting the fastmoving Holy Fire, which has blackened 9,614 acres of the Cleveland National Forest and was only 5 percent contained. Forrest Gordon Clark, who was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, was charged with aggravated arson damaging at least five inhabited structures, arson of inhabited property, arson of forest and criminal threats, all felonies, as well as two misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, according to Assistant District Attorney Chris Duff. Clark could face 10 years to life in prison. When investigators went to question Clark he abrasively told them they weren’t allowed on his property in Holy Jim
Canyon, the flashpoint of the fire, Duff said. He is accused of threatening his neighbors, including one whose cabin burned down an hour later, Duff said. Since it erupted Monday afternoon, the blaze has destroyed a dozen cabins in the Holy Jim Canyon area of the Cleveland National Forest and advanced into Riverside County. While the blaze has continued its unrelenting march, U.S. Forest Service officials said Thursday they “expect favorable weather conditions this weekend” to help the firefighting effort. During a Wednesday afternoon briefing, Orange County Fire Authority Battalion Chief Shane Sherwood said the fire began “around and near” Clark’s cabin in Holy
Jim Canyon. He declined to comment on specifics that led to his arrest, other than saying witness statements and “physical findings” at the scene led to the belief Clark set the massive blaze. “As far as exactly how it was started, we’re still working through some of that evidence,” Sherwood said. Volunteer Fire Chief Mike Milligan, who also has a cabin in the area, told the Orange County Register Clark has long feuded with a neighbor and other cabin owners. He ran through the area last week screaming, and sent Milligan an email warning that “this place will burn,” Milligan said. Clark spoke to a videographer from OnScene
Holy fire is the just the latest wildfire to tear across California, along with the massive Mendocino Complex fire which had grown to around 300,000
acres by Monday evening. Earlier this week, emergency services declared the Mendocino fire the largest in the history of the state.

Dreamers’ Fate at Stake Again in Federal Court By Desert Star Staff HOUSTON – The future of 800,000 so-called “Dreamers” nationwide – more than half of them in California – is at stake as the DACA program is challenged in a federal court hearing today in Houston. Texas and six other states are asking for a preliminary injunction to stop the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, arguing that DACA is illegal. The Trump administration opposes DACA, so the judge has allowed the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund to step in. “It has allowed our clients and so many others that only know this country as home to work, to study, without that constant fear of deportation,” said MALDEF co-counsel Celina Moreno, who represents the 22 DACA recipients who are part of this case and want to save the program, “and
it has been a tremendous benefit to each state.” But the legal battles started soon after DACA’s inception in 2012. President Donald Trump terminated the program last September, but a judge ordered the feds to keep processing renewals. Just last week, another federal judge ordered the administration to start accepting new DACA applications by Aug. 23. If the Texas court issues an opposing order, the case likely will end up back before the U.S. Supreme Court, which deadlocked on the issue last year. Moreno added that several other DACA-related cases currently are in progress. “Some of the other cases going on around the country are centered around whether or not the Trump administration lawfully phased out the DACA program,” she

The states in the lawsuit are asking the judge to immediately stop accepting or renewing DACA
applications, effectively phasing out the program. Details of the case are online at scribd.com.

How to Create and Spread Hope in Your Daily Life By Desert Star Staff With seemingly constant negative news reports telling of school shootings, suicides and more, you may feel like there is little to feel hopeful about these days, but experts say that having hope can be a powerful tool in good times and bad. “Whether you’ve lost a job or a loved one, or you’re experiencing general feelings of despair, hope can give you strength and renew your potential and purpose,” says Dr. Rosalind Tompkins, founder of the National Month of Hope. “Finding hope in everyday challenges is the first step to creating a solution.”

To help you find hope in your life, as well as spread hope to others, Dr. Tompkins, a recognized “Hopeologist” and life coach offers the following advice. • Take a Hope Break. Schedule five minute “hope breaks” into your normal routine. Find a quiet place, take five to 10 deep breaths and think about good things happening, instead of the worst-case scenario. Make an affirmation and speak it out loud. Repeat as often as needed. • Take Action. Set goals and move forward, focusing on results. Surround yourself
with people who believe in you and your progress. • Volunteer. Spread hope to your community by giving time, food and money to those in need. Whether you clean up a local park, read to children in schools or volunteer in a food pantry, you’ll be spreading hope to those who need it, which can help you feel more hopeful too. • Have a Chat. Is there someone in your life who needs hope? Prepare yourself for a conversation with that person by turning on your own belief that things can get better. Start the conversation with something like, “I care August 10, 2018
about you and wanted to check in with you to see how things are going.” Ask them to share what they are going through and be prepared to listen. Let them know that you are there for them and reinforce feelings of hope. • Get Involved. In the spirit of spreading positivity, Dr. Tompkins has a goal of seeing 10,000 “Hope Connections”
has been even higher. Monterroso says more than 700,000 legal permanent residents across the country have gone through a lengthy process and paid hundreds of dollars in application fees, with little response from the government. “They already have legal, permanent residence for more than five years, and filled out all the paperwork that’s required to become a citizen, and have shown that they are eligible,” he points out. “So, we need to figure out what is taking so long.” Mayors of 46 U.S. cities and 50 members of Congress have written to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to demand action on the backlog. That list includes Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, and Reps. Ruben Gallego and Raul Grijalva of Arizona.

Groups Question Possible Pollution at Migrant Detention Centers By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, Calif. – A coalition of health, labor and environmental groups is asking the Trump administration to release specific locations for immigrant detention centers to be built on military bases – sites that may be polluted. President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance policy at the border has resulted in the detention of tens of thousands of men, women and children. Attorney Lisa Evans with Earthjustice, the law firm representing the groups, has filed an expedited Freedom of Information Act request to find out exactly where the migrants will be housed, because, she says, these

military bases have a long history of toxic pollution. “To round those people up and put them at risk of perhaps permanent harm by housing them in areas that are either on top of or close to hazardous waste sites is an unconscionable act and it’s unnecessary,” she stresses. The administration is rushing to build two migrant detention centers in Texas – one at Fort Bliss in El Paso, home to several Superfund sites, and another on a former firing range at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo. There also have been rumors of plans to use land at the former Concord Naval Weapons Station in the Bay Area. Exposure to toxic chemicals from sites such as these can cause cancer, neurological damage and developmental harm, but the government says the sites are safe. A U.S. Forest Service spokesman said more than a dozen cabins in Clark’s neighborhood had burned. Clark’s cabin, however, was not damaged by the fire, the Orange County Register reported. Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer had harsh words for Clark, saying that if he is convicted he “needs to suffer the fullest punishment of the law.” “This is a monster,” Spitzer said. “Who would go out with low humidity and high winds and the highest heat temperatures this time of the year and intentionally set the forest on fire? … He’s literally destroyed our forest.” Spitzer said the Holy Fire should be more appropriately named the “Holy Hell” fire. The steep terrain was making it difficult for fire engines to get to some of the flames, so the major weapons against the blaze are the aerial water drops, officials said. Bommarito noted that the area probably hasn’t burned since about 1980. The phone numbers for residents to call for information on the Holy Fire have changed, according to CalFire. The new numbers are (714) 573-6200 and (714) 573-6202. Source: KMIR

A Conversation With Actor/Writer Sydney Weisman
Sydney Weisman By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) Coachella Valley music producer Les Michaels is known for presenting new and favorite Cabaret musical artists through his popular “Sundays In Summer Series”, performed in the Arthur Newman Theater, at the Joslyn Center in Palm Desert. Michaels is smack dab in the middle of his 9th season of producing cabaret concerts featuring singers and song stylists from Los Angeles, Chicago, as well as musical artists who now reside in the Coachella Valley. Last Sunday, August 5th, I got an opportunity to catch Sydney Weisman in her new show “Who Put the Chutzpah
in Broadway?” It’s a loving tribute to the men and women of Broadway who compose the music and write the lyrics that make the young girls cry, the middle aged reach back into their memories, while the gray-headed crowd’s eyes tearup remembering and asking themselves where have all the flowers and their lives gone? It’s a wonderful musical journey well worth listening to songs written by the Royalty of Broadway: The Gershwin Brothers, George and Ira, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Irving Berlin, Dorothy Fields, Frank Loesser, Kurt Weill, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and a host of other iconic musical giants of Broadway’s music. Sydney, aka, ‘Little
Miss Broadway’ selected the musical numbers that comprise her show, along with musical director and legendary piano accompanist Barney McClure. Together they weave a nostalgic musical tapestry of songs that have endured for years. Sprinkled with specialty numbers, some of which were strangers to me, but highly entertaining to the packed audience at the Arthur Newman theater, once again demonstrates the staying power and relevance of great artists and their work even after 90 years. Ms. Weisman is a song stylist who also delivers insider stories about the songs she shares with her audience. She’s petite, has a warm and winning smile that immediately engages her
audience and where we find ourselves eagerly waiting to hear her sing her next song and share another anecdote. The show titled “Who Put the Chutzpah in Broadway?” is a ‘love valentine’ to the talent and creativity of Jewish writers and composers of the 20th century, who literally changed the face of the American Broadway musical with their innovative and enduring music and lyrics. I had the opportunity to chat with Ms. Weisman following her performance. When I asked her what is your favorite song in the show?, she leaned back in her chair, and really thought about it. “It’s difficult, because I really like every one of them”. I waited … “but I have to admit my heart favors the music of the Gershwin Brothers, George and Ira.” Then leaning forward, says with conviction and passion, “Just listen to the first nine words of their ‘Our Love is here to Stay’ song that I sang this afternoon. ‘It’s very clear’, just sums it all up for me. Love is eternal.” I think it’s safe to say that love is the most powerful emotion on the planet; hands down. It’s the favorite emotion of all creative artists. Pressing Ms. Weisman further, I asked what about some of the other songs, like “The Christmas Song” that is replete with humorous, gentle, funpoking lyrics concerning the commercialization of the
Christmas Holiday Season. Smiling she says “Well, we all need some humor in our lives, just to get through life’s “rough times” came the answer. Words to live by indeed. Her program featured fourteen musical numbers some iconic and some that have disappeared from the radar screens of the American Song Book performers – but non-the-less are worthy of listening once again. A couple of my favorites from her show were a heart tugging, haunting, rendition of Kurt Weill’s “Lost in the Stars”; Melissa Manchester’s emotionally-redemptive song “Come in from the Rain”; and the clever up beat tune and lyrics of “Everybody Wants to be Sondheim”, written by Alan Chapman, LA-based radio Host of KUSC Classical radio, who also doubles and triples as a Ph.D educator, producer, and pianist; brought the Joslyn theater audience house down. P.S. I finally coerced her favorite number of the afternoon’s performance. It was her take on Frank Loesser’s “If I Were a Bell”, from “Guys and Dolls”. It was a fun-filled afternoon of memorable songs. If you discover an upcoming performance of Sydney Weisman performing her one-woman show “Who Put the Chutzpah in Broadway”, in Southern California, make sure you check it out.
Top 5 most-profitable investments in luxury goods
By Desert Star Staff Since the beginning of time, people have been looking for the easiest ways to accumulate wealth. They say that there are only two ways to make money: by working or by having your assets work for you. When it comes to the second option, people with deep pockets have a wide variety of choices, from investing in energy or precious metals to buying real estate and big company’s shares. But what if you already have? It’s high time to start investing in luxury goods. Analysts at the Knight Frank property consultancy, tracking the performance of a theoretical basket of selected collectable asset classes, have revealed the list of the most lucrative investments into luxury goods in view of 2017 results. #1 Fine art: Last year, works of art went up in price more than any other luxury item, according to the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index (KFLII). The average price for art masterpieces has grown by 21 percent. The consultancy noted that this asset had lagged behind classic vehicles and wine over the previous several years. In November, the sale of

a painting by the Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci set a world record for an auctioned work of art. The painting, called ‘Salvator Mundi,’ or ‘Savior of the World,’ sold for $450 million. The figure more than doubled the previous record, set in 2015, when ‘Women of Algiers’ by Pablo Picasso was purchased at a final price of $179.3 million. #2 Wines: Fine wines were ranked the world’s number two luxury asset, which had managed to become the leader of the list in 2016. The prices for wine increased by 11 percent in 2017 compared to 24-percent growth in the previous year. According to Andrew Gordon, managing director at the wine distributor Private Cellar, growth in demand for wines was mostly boosted by increasing interest from Asian buyers. #3 Watches: Number three in the 2017 ranking was wristwatches, which went up in price by five percent. This luxury accessory reportedly took a 69-percent jump over the past 10 years. The ‘Paul Newman’ Rolex Daytona became a record-breaker in this group of luxury goods. In October, the watch was sold for $17.8 million. On the back of the wristwatch “Drive Carefully Me,”
is inscribed. It was a gift from his wife, Joanne Woodward. #4 Vintage cars: Classic vehicles became the fourthmost profitable investment, according to the index. Although this valuable asset demonstrated just a twopercent increase in price in 2017, over the last 10 years, vintage cars became the leaders among luxury goods, marking a 334-percent growth in price. Among the most remarkable deals of 2017 included the sale of a 1995 McLaren F1 for $15.6 million, a 1959 Ferrari 250GT California Spider Lwb for August 10, 2018
$18 million, and a 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 for $22.5 million. #5 Jewelry: Prices for jewelry grew four percent last year and 138 percent over the last decade. A record price was set by ‘Apollo & Artemis’ diamond earrings, which were sold for $57.4 million. According to the consultancy, rare coins also saw a four-percent increase in price, while the cost of colored diamonds didn’t change. Over the last decade, both assets grew by 182 percent and 70 percent, respectively. A rare diamond, known as the ‘Pink
Star,’ was purchased for $71 million, which remains a record for a cut diamond. Prices for Chinese ceramics dropped five percent last year and three percent over the decade, while fancy furniture proved to be a poor investment, with a 32-percent decline in price over the last ten years. In 2017, prices for posh furniture decreased by one percent. At the same time, expensive stamps didn’t show any changes in price last year, although they have risen in price by 103 percent over the past decade. www.desertstarweekly.com

Don’t Miss ‘Waitress’ at the Pantages. It’s Delicious!
Lenne Klingaman, Desi Oakley and Charity Angel Dawson in the National Tour of WAITRESS. Photo by Joan Marcus When I entered the Pantages Theatre to see “Waitress,” I knew I was in for a tasty treat as soon as I saw the colorful onstage curtain that looked just like a giant cherry pie covered with a crisscrossed crust. The musical begins in Joe’s Diner. The three waitresses on staff are all there, Jenna (Desi Oakland), Becky (Charity Angel Dawson) and Dawn (Lenne Klingaman) as well as the grumpy cook, Cal (Ryan C. Dunkin). He is always yelling at Becky who still has a snappy comeback response. Will she get fired? At the same time Jenna, who bakes all the beautiful pies every day, is taking Joe’s order
at his usual table. The grouchy old man (Larry Marshall) owns the Diner, and it’s apparent that he loves each and every pie Jenna bakes. He also enjoys her company and often gives her words of fatherly advice. This time he urges her to enter a baking contest, telling her he’s sure she would win the grand prize of $25,000. He believes in her amazing piebaking skills which she learned from her mother long ago. Suddenly Jenna runs off to the bathroom, followed by the other two waitresses. They want her to take a pregnancy test which they happen to have. She does and is horrified by the results--she’s pregnant. Now how can she get away
from her surly, unpleasant husband Earl (Nick Bailey)? While Jenna’s life looks bleak at this point, things look up when she visits the ob/ gyn clinic and is seen by Dr. Pomatter (Bryan Fenkart) a new doctor there. He is endearingly awkward, but he does confirm she is definitely with child.
As she leaves she gives him a luscious looking pie, she’s made. He tells her he doesn’t eat sweets because sugar isn’t right for you. However, as soon as she leaves, he takes a bite of the pie. Then he can’t stop--he’s in love with her pie. Fast they are in love with each other, even though they are both married. Meanwhile, at the diner, romance may turn out better for Dawn. She has met a guy online, but she told him she’d only stay for five minutes on their date. Next day she tells the girls she won’t ever see him again. No such luck. At this point, Ogie (Jeremy Morse), her short-term suitor, is sitting at her table and won’t let anyone else wait on him. Morse, the unmovable suitor, is hilarious as he tells the unimpressed Dawn they are made for each other--because what other couples could share a mutual love for Revolutionary War reenactments. His physical schtick throughout had the opening night audience in stitches as he continues to woo her by singing “Never Ever Getting Rid of Me.” When he finally leaves the audience showed their approval with
thunderous applause. I secretly wished he would come back and do it all over again. Comedy, song, and dance throughout make this show a joy to see, but like life, it is also tinged with some loss and difficult decision making. In the final scene, we meet Jenna’s young daughter Lulu played by adorable identical twins Catherine and Elizabeth Last. (I especially enjoyed that since I have identical twin sisters.) “Waitress,” a Broadway smash hit, was adapted from the late Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film of the same name. Shelly not only wrote the script, but she also directed and acted in the movie. Sadly Shelly was murdered in New York before her first feature film was premiered. “Waitress” is also the first Broadway musical with an all-female creative team-book by Jessie Nelson, score by Sara Bareilles and directed by Diane Paulus. “Waitress,” at the Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd. L.A. runs through July 26. For tickets and information call 866-755-2929 or online at HollywoodPantages.com.

think life insurance is more necessary for married people than for singles, according to the 2017 Insurance Barometer Study by Life Happens and LIMRA. But even if you’re single and don’t have children, you may still leave behind loved ones who would have to pay your debts. For example, if you have a cosigner on a loan, he or she would be responsible to pay it back. Life insurance can provide peace of mind by potentially paying off any remaining debt. Or, if you want to leave money to a charity, life insurance can help ensure your wishes are carried out. 2. It’s too expensive. Cost is one of the top reasons people don’t purchase life insurance. Sixty-six percent of participants in the Insurance Barometer Study said it’s too expensive. The same consumers overestimated the price by more than three times the actual cost.
It can cost as little as $14.24 per month for a $250,000 policy at Erie Insurance, for example. That’s less than 50 cents a day. Millennials can get an even bigger break by purchasing while they’re still young. Premiums are typically less expensive since they’re generally healthier and have fewer assets. 3. My employer provides life insurance; I don’t need my own. While it’s great to have coverage through an employer, it often isn’t enough. “A typical group life benefit is two times your annual salary, but you may need more like six to eight times your salary just to break even,” says Louis Colaizzo, senior vice president for Life at Erie Insurance. What’s more, if you take another job, your policy may not be transferable. 4. I’m a stay-at-home parent. If you’re not the breadwinner in your household, you may think your family doesn’t depend on your income. However, think about the value

FAMILY FEATURES
ust like forward-thinking culinary artists, many at-home chefs seek out the next trendy flavor to provide friends and family gathered around the table. When pondering which trend you’ll dive into in the future, consider incorporating tastes from an especially influential international location – the Mediterranean Sea region. Considered by the experts at Les Dames d’Escoffier International (LDEI) in the organization’s 2018 Trends Report to be one of the most influential parts of the world on the American food scene, flavors from the Mediterranean Sea focus on a diet heavy on fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, seeds and nuts. Take this Hummus recipe, for example, which involves processing a host of beans,
seeds and seasonings to create a light, smooth dip to serve with anything from vegetables to crackers. Because the fare is typically lighter, small bites and salads such as Fresh Figs with Honey or this Tomato, Feta and Basil Salad provide easy-to-prepare versions of Mediterranean cuisine. Incorporating vegetables (tomatoes and basil) along with the salty, milky flavors of feta cheese makes the salad a distinctly Mediterranean dish.
