ED/OP Pepe Escobar Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz has said that the US, on the financial front, is “on the wrong side of history.” As for the Republican candidates chasing the nomination for the 2016 US presidential race, well, they may qualify only for the ‘wrong’ side of the bargain, as they hardly know what ‘history’ means. And that brings us to a mammoth specimen of entertainment/reality TV; the first
Republican debate, no less than a seemingly-eternal 15 months before the actual US presidential election. It definitely started with a – what else? - celebrity TV bang. Would anybody raise their hands if they were mulling running as a third-party candidate, and ignore the eventual Republican nominee? Up goes the lone raised hand of billionaire real estate speculator-cum-reality TV
celebrity Donald Trump. And true to form, The Donald pulled a – what else? – Trump; he would keep hedging his bets, while swearing on live television to support the Republican nominee and not be a third-party candidate if he was, well, the Republican nominee. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul’s response to that was exemplary; Trump was “hedging

his bets”. After all, he “buys and sells politicians.” And Paul doubled down, hinting that Trump was an actual Trojan Horse who will, in the end, support The Hillarator ‘we came, we saw, he died’ Clinton. The Hillarator, by the way, took no prisoners, announcing to the whole social media universe that she was not watching the debate; she was hangin’ out in LA with – who else? – a bunch of reality TV ‘royalty’. But she did commit the mortal sin of attending one of Trump’s weddings, as The Donald himself admitted. We only care about our $2bn The reality TV spectacular even had a warm-up, like those preliminary bouts on UFC. Cynics might have preferred iron chick Ronda Rousey immobilizing all the Republican contestants in the octagon in less than 30 seconds, but still the arguable winner of the warm-up was Carly Fiorina, former (booted out) CEO of Hewlett-Packard. Cynics, once again, might have preferred the other Carly (Simon) singing ‘You’re so Vain’, but that’s just nostalgia. On foreign policy, the warmup highlight was an actual prewarm-up, as South Carolina’s wacko job Lindsay Graham told Japanese media on the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, “If I were President Truman, I would have dropped the bomb.” Predictably, the main ‘debate’ was an anti-abortion and illegal immigration ‘drop the bomb’ fan fest. Trump, predictably, trumped them all. His master plan to solve illegal immigration: The Great Trump Wall of Mexico, including “a big beautiful door in that wall so people can get into this wall legally.” Marco Rubio’s response; “El Chapo built a tunnel under the fence and we need a solution to deal with that too.” Trump didn’t elaborate on how he would deal with the notorious Mexican drug lord’s underground tactics. As this was a reality TV spectacular generating huge ratings – and not a real
Photo courtesy of © Brian Snyder / Reuters ‘debate’ - it was micromanaged to the millimeter by Fox News. Some of the questions unveiled Fox’s real agenda; dress down Trump a notch and give a chance to the other Muppets to say something, anything, mildly respectable. Fox News’s demographics hover around 68 as the median age; angry, aging, white, exceptionalist American males. Fox – essentially a Republican PR asset - made $794 million in profits in 2014. The network is worth at least $2 billion a year to parent company 21st Century Fox, part of the Murdoch empire. Trump made mincemeat of any idea of a level playing field. He was on a roll, including a full 30 seconds to expand on his claim that the Mexican government is sending rapists and murderers to undermine the American dream. “Our leaders are stupid. Our politicians are stupid. And the Mexican government is much smarter, much sharper, much more cunning, and they send the bad ones over because they don’t wanna pay for them, they don’t wanna take care of them, why should they when the stupid leaders of the United States are doing it for them?” he asked. So political America – as in the Beltway – is stupid. That much was already known by the whole Global South. Now coming from a billionaire who knows all there is to know about making it
big, that certainly adds gravitas. Gravitas, of course, in a trash TV sense. Even rightwing pundits are now waking up to the fact that The Donald’s act is actually a re-run of comedian Norm MacDonald’s impersonation of Burt Reynolds from the Celebrity Jeopardy sketch. Which makes total sense, as far as American pop culture is concerned. If even George ‘Dubya’ Bush can become an American president, why not an impersonator from a fake celebrity TV personality? ‘We don’t win anymore!’ Foreign policy at the reality TV spectacular was a blast. Rand Paul said, “[Islamic State, IS formerly] ISIS rides around in a billion dollars’ worth of Humvees. We didn’t create ISIS, ISIS created themselves, but we will stop them.” No wonder the arguably science-based Obama administration is puzzled on how to deal with a creationist IS. Jeb! The billionaire candidate too cowardly/savvy to use the toxic family name was forced to talk about the Iraq war: “Knowing what we know now … it was a mistake. I wouldn’t have gone in.” Yet “the US has to finish the job in Iraq”, Obama “abandoned Iraq, and when he left Al-Qaeda was done for and ISIS was created.” The creationist myth once again - with a twist.
And, predictably, considering the profile of some of his billionaire backers, Jeb! has an Iran hardon; “We need to stop the Iran agreement for sure because the Iranian mullahs have blood on their hands and we need to take out ISIS with every tool at our disposal.” Yet Jeb! paled compared to Ted Cruz, who got terribly excited describing an elaborate TehranKremlin conspiracy to unleash a vicious cyber-attack against the Pentagon’s IT network. Scott Walker jumped in, stressing that, “Russian and Chinese hackers probably know more about Hillary Clinton’s email server than do members of Congress.” Walker actually should try to get the job of Dr. Strangelove, sorry, Gen. Breedlove/hate at NATO; “I would send weapons to Ukraine, I would work with NATO to get forces on the eastern border of Poland.” And he wants missile defense in Poland and the Czech Republic to boot. So before the next war, what do to about the economy? Jeb! has the answer: “You fix a convoluted tax code, you go in and replace every regulation that’s a job killer.” The Donald – who had four of his companies bankrupt – turned the whole argument around; “Every company virtually in Atlantic City just went bankrupt… I had the good sense
[to leave] seven years ago… “I’ve made a lot of money in Atlantic City and let me tell you I am very proud of that.” Now that’s your metaphor of America as two-bit casino racket Atlantic City. In the end, all reality TV contestants played to the concerns of their ‘base’. American exceptionalism faces three horrible, compound threats even Pentagon think tanks could not come up with; China, IS and a horde of illegal Latino immigrants. But Ted Cruz will be able to prevent Armageddon. He will “rescind every illegal action taken by Barack Obama.” He will defend “religious liberty.” He will destroy the Iran nuclear deal. And he will transfer the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. Whatever. Because the winner of the show on Google search data was – who else? –Trump. The Donald laid down the law: “Our country is in serious trouble. We don’t win anymore. We don’t beat China or Mexico or Japan; those countries make so many cars. We don’t do anything right. Our military has to be strengthened.” So come January 2017, there’s got to be a war. Ukraine? Iran? “Syraq”? Russia? China? Why not all of them at once? “We don’t win anymore!” I think it’s time to enlist Ronda Rousey.

With young clients the problem is that that they may not have yet accumulated enough assets in which they feel like a financial advisor is necessary and their investments may not meet the minimum investment required by an advisor. When one begins to understand the importance of saving for a rainy day, it is a starting point and an important time in which they need to invest themselves in learning. Most have never been trained to save or feel the need to, as most have live comfortable lives with all their needs filled by their parents. I applaud all parents today who make their children get jobs, so that they can begin to pay their own way. More may be learned from working your way thru college, than the studies themselves. There are certain attributes that one gains in struggle. They are appreciation, pride of accomplishment, cocoordinating efforts with others, goal setting, time management, respectability, overcoming failures and the ability to set
goals. These traits will provide more security for a young person than having a ton of money to spend and a cushy life. It does not matter the amount that one can save out of every paycheck, it is far more important to establish a habit of saving. Savings should be placed on auto-pilot, because as soon as that hard cold cash reaches one’s hands, there are thousands of things on their wish list, and the thing that they spend the most time doing, the internet, will provide a gazillion more ways to spend easily. When our rainy day arrives, we all experience the rewards of saving and planning financially. When a younger person begins to make money this is the most important time to become educated on financial planning. Including a basic financial course in their studies is important in any career. Investment clubs are very inspiring and a great learning tool. When you are young invincible, and on your way up, why think about a will, a
medical or a financial power of attorney? Young people feel that it is so far into the future, they do not give it priority. Young adults may not actually need a will until they are married with children or have accumulated assets significant enough to need protection. Once they have children a will is necessary to designate a guardian for the minor children. No one is invincible, and accidents can happen. It’s important to prepare for these situations, no matter how remote the possibility may be. Over the age of 18, parents no longer have automatic rights to access medical records or to make legal or financial decisions on their children’s behalf. As financial educators, we help young adults envision how life will look 40 years from now, and visually place themselves in that picture. Most younger adults have experienced family medical situations and deaths. They have experienced the problems of what the caretakers and descendents have had to face when there has been lack
of planning and preparedness. Getting them to think about the importance of their own will is a starting point. Many youth believe that, if they’re young and do not have a lot of money, they don’t need an estate plan. That is simply not true. They should begin having a conversation with their parents to discuss how the parent’s estate plan may impact them. Financial websites, like www.nolo.com and www. Rocketlawyer can provide tools and a fillable form, in which a “State specific”, Will, Power of Medical and Financial Attorney can be written.

Board Size, Tenure and Compensation Dear Kelly: At our last annual meeting there wasn’t a quorum to elect directors. Our current CCR’s and Bylaws do not mention what should happen when there isn’t a quorum. What happens now? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Good Morning Mr. Richardson, Our association wants to amend our bylaws to increase the number of persons elected to the board. Do you have to fix the number to be elected or is it permissible to say “up to” a certain number of board members. We have a small association Dear J.S.: and may not be able to fill a fixed Corporations Code Section number on the board. 7220(b) says that directors are Thank you, J.T., Anaheim elected or appointed to serve their term and hold office until Dear J.T.: a successor has been elected. Under Corporations Code So, unless and until there is a Section 212, bylaws must state board size, which must be at least 3. The section allows a variable number of directors, so long as the board cannot double. In other words, a board could vary from 5 to 9 directors but could not vary to 10, which is double the minimum board size. Many boards are too large for their communities. I frequently encounter boards which are 2025% of their entire community. There is no hard and fast rule, but I think for up to about 25 members, 3 directors is fine, and for about 50 or more members, 5 directors is usually sufficient. Only the largest associations benefit from a 7 member or larger August 12, 2015

Californians Put Convenience Over Wi-Fi Security By Desert Star Staff Californians often are putting convenience ahead of safety when they use free public wireless networks, according to a new AARP report that found that a quarter of adult Internet users access public Wi-Fi at least once a week and are vulnerable to cyber attacks. “Recently, AARP conducted a survey of people’s online safety and security, said Amy Nofziger, director of AARP’s Fraud Watch Network. “And found out that tens of thousands admit to engaging in activity that could put them squarely in the sites of hackers looking to steal their personal information. Nofziger listed four things you should never do on
public wireless networks: * Don’t access your email, credit card or bank accounts. * Make sure the network is authentic, not a fake using a name similar to that of the coffee shop or hotel. * Check your settings; don’t let your device connect automatically to Wi-Fi. * If you must go online to shop, use your cellular signal, which is more secure than WiFi. Nofziger said the FBI estimates that more than $800 million was lost through cyber crime in 2014. In response, AARP has launched the “Watch Your Wi-Fi campaign, which provides security tips and details scams frequently used
by hackers. Despite the risks, Nofziger acknowledged, the Internet can be a lifeline. “But we just want to be safe, she said. “So, use the free public Wi-Fi to surf your favorite sports sites, check the news, check the weather. But do not put any personal or private information into your mobile device or tablet when you’re on a free public Wi-Fi. For more information on how to safely connect on public wireless networks, AARP has a page on its website: aarp. org/watchyourwifi. The AARP survey is at aarp.org/research. -
Social Security: Not just for seniors in Washington
By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE - The 80th birthday of Social Security is next week, and every 2016 presidential candidate has ideas for changing the system - whether that means strengthening it or scrapping it. It’s expected to be among the topics of Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders’ remarks this weekend in Seattle. More than 1.2 million Washingtonians receive Social Security benefits. While the importance of Social Security to seniors is most often in the spotlight, said Marilyn Watkins, policy director for the Economic Opportunity Institute, the program also has helped stabilize the economy overall. “Even in times when the economy collapses, Social Security income continues to come in, she said. “It helps not only families survive, but it helps
local businesses stay strong. It’s amazingly important in smaller communities. The current income cap is slightly more than $118,000. For people who earn more, their additional income isn’t subject to the Social Security tax. There’s been much discussion of raising the cap, so that wealthier people contribute more. Some consider that more fair; others see it as unfair. More than nine in 10 Washingtonians age 65 and older are Social Security recipients, but another 213,000 people with disabilities, their spouses or children, receive benefits - as well as about 110,000 family members of workers who have died. Watkins once was part of those statistics, when her husband passed away, leaving her with two sons, ages 9 and 11. “Within three weeks, we had
our first benefit checks coming in, she said. “Every month until my younger son turned 18, Social Security income continued to come into our household. It just made a huge difference. It just helped us weather that storm. Until the 1980s, survivor benefits continued for children until they finished college. Now, they end when a child turns 18 and graduates from high school. Watkins would like to see the college benefit reinstated. Another potential change is to calculate benefits by averaging fewer years of a worker’s income. Watkins said that would benefit those who are unemployed for a time, or must take time off for family care giving - and those zero-income years affect their benefits later in life. “Changing that from 35 years to 30 years would just provide that adjustment that allows for

After Failing Air Quality Report, Improvements Suggested
By Desert Star Staff JOSHUA TREE, Calif. – As smoke from multiple wildfires chokes the air across California this summer, air quality has again become a hot topic in the Golden State. But despite the current bout of wildfires, the biggest source of smog in California remains the state’s 33.5 million vehicles. California is moving to promote air quality, especially in the wake of a new report from the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) that gives Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Sequoia and Kings Canyon an “F” for air quality. Ulla Reeves, clean air campaign manager with the NPCA, says all four iconic National Parks have unhealthy levels of ozone. “Between oil and gas plants and vehicles, all of this pollution piles up together and
contributes to degraded air quality,” she says. “Vehicles, in particular, are a huge problem in California.” Governor Jerry Brown set a goal last year of one million zero-emissions cars on the road by 2023, and signed a bill to make electric cars more affordable. Three years ago, the state mandated that 15 percent of cars sold in California be all electric, hybrid or hydrogen vehicles, beginning in 2018. Reeves says the Regional Haze Rule of the Clean Air Act needs to be tightened to force additional action on the issue around the country. Environmental advocates are pushing for more zero-emissions vehicles and changes to the EPA’s Regional Haze Program “That rule, unfortunately, in the wake of a new report that gives California national parks like Joshua Tree failing grades for air quality. Environmental Advocates Push for Govt. Inspections of Oil Pipelines
Environmental advocates are pushing for government inspections of coastal oil pipelines after a spill in May near Santa Barbara. They say the industry isn’t doing a good enough job of policing itself. Photo credit: MSR Photo/iStockphoto.com.
By Desert Star Staff SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The federal government should immediately inspect all the oil pipelines on or near the California coast. That’s the request in a legal petition filed Thursday by the Center for Biological Diversity to the U.S. Interior and Transportation Departments. The request comes in the wake of the Refugio oil spill in May near Santa Barbara, when a 28-year-old pipeline owned by Plains All American burst, killing hundreds of animals and fouling 100 miles of coastline. “That’s just not acceptable,” says Kristen Monsell, staff attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity. “The federal
government needs to step up and take a more active role, so that problem areas are identified and fixed before another oil spill happens, not after.” Under the current system, the oil companies police themselves, doing their own inspections on pipes in environmentally sensitive areas, including the ocean, approximately every five years. But the preliminary government probe into the Refugio spill indicated much more serious corrosion than the company had reported. The petition doesn’t specify a deadline for the additional inspections, but calls the need “immediate.” Opponents point out
government inspections would cost taxpayers millions. Monsell counters that the cost of not doing them would be much higher. “The coastal environment just can’t handle another spill like this,” she says. “If the federal government doesn’t have the resources to do these inspections, then it really should just decommission all of this aging offshore infrastructure.” The petition asks for the inspection of at least 213 miles of pipeline in federal waters and state near-shore waters. Monsell explains much of it was built in the late 1960s and early 1980s, making it older and more vulnerable than the pipeline that burst.
China stages biggest currency devaluation in 20 yrs to revive exports
By Desert Star Staff The central bank of China has cut its daily reference rate by 1.9 percent, making its biggest downward adjustment since 1994. The People’s Bank insists Tuesday’s measures are a one-off aimed at reviving faltering exports. The bank’s announcement prompted the yuan exchange rate to tumble against the US dollar. As of 8:15am GMT on Tuesday, the yuan (renminbi) was trading at 6.33 to the dollar, 1.9 percent lower than Monday. Over the weekend, Beijing said July exports dropped 8.3 percent, compared to a year before. The weaker the yuan, the bigger revenues exporters get from their foreign sales. The tough move may also indicate that Beijing is allowing the market more freedom to determine the yuan rate. “The People’s Bank of China www.desertstarweekly.com
has astutely combined a move to weaken the yuan with a shift to a more market-determined exchange rate,” Eswar Prasad, a Cornell University professor and former China representative of the IMF told the Wall Street Journal. Becky Liu, a Hong Kongbased senior strategist for Standard Chartered, said the bank’s move was “big… and bolder” than predicted. “The new fixing will be quoted based on the previous day’s closing, which is a real market level. The band will become the real band. This is a big step, and bolder than we expected,” she told Bloomberg News. Tuesday’s devaluation comes a decade after Beijing’s key decision to replace the hard peg against the US dollar by a link to a basket of currencies. The exchange
rate was simultaneously set within a band of around 8.11 to the US dollar, marking a 2.1 percent move from an 8.28 yuan exchange rate in place before 2005. In those 10 years, the yuan has risen 33 August 12, 2015
percent, becoming one of the world’s most-traded currencies, while Beijing has staked out its position as the world’s secondbiggest economy. The adjustment could complicate Beijing’s goal of
making the yuan the world’s leading currency. On the other hand, becoming more marketoriented is a solid step towards greater openness.

Earlier Saturday at Palm Springs Lanes in Cathedral City, the organization held it’s 25th annual Bowl-A-Thon to help raise funds for after school programs and it was certainly a packed house. “All twenty-eight lanes... We actually oversold the lanes. We had thirty-two business sponsors pay two-hundred and fifty dollars to sponsor a lane and many of them give them lanes back so our kids can bowl today as well,” said Greg Wetmore, the president and CEO of United Cerebral Palsy of IE. Wetmore says it is one of their most popular events, and something the children look forward to year in and year out. “Consistency and continuity. Our kids are so very special and all we want for them is to be included in all the things that you and I just take for granted in
the things we do and it’s so very important to us.” During the day’s festivities one lucky girl was the recipient of a brand new bicycle, and some long time service employees were honored for their dedicated service. “It’s a great crowd. Earlier today we had a presentation to a young lady as a result a variety a children’s charity. A young lady named Nia received a very special bicycle. We also acknowledged a twenty-three long service employee Kathy McKinnie, and also the lady that started the bowl-a-thons twentyfive years ago. We honored her as well, Jan Warner. “ Certainly an exciting and fun day was had by all, and the event was a complete success. “We raised close to nine thousand dollars on this event. We have a silent auction and it’s a very fun day,” said Wetmore. Source KMIR
Clash of Kings Launches First Asian Campaign
SEOUL, South Korea, -- Clash of Kings, one of the top-grossing mobile games in the world, has tapped South Korean idol singer and television personality Hani, for its first Asian marketing campaign that uses traditional media. The first of several spots featuring Hani has premiered on television in South Korea. Hani, better known as a member of the South Korean girl group EXID, is seen in a fantasy chainmail on a futuristic foreign planet background in her new commercial for the videogame Clash of Kings. Complete with a knight’s outfit, Hani wears armor and yields a sword, allowing her to blend right into the theme of the game. The singer stars and cosplays as a warrior in the 15-second commercial, which has been uploaded on YouTube here. Hani is role-playing as one of the fighters that go into battle in order to bring glory for their kingdom.
While the campaign is geared to show off the world of the game—and the fantastic visual effects do so quite well—it is another example showing off how players enjoy being warrior princesses and gorgeous knights in the Clash of Kings world, and display a mysterious sense of fun and beauty, giving them a powerful and dangerous appearance and feeling. Clash of Kings is a free-toplay real-time strategy game released last year on Android and iOS, and it has been downloaded over 60 million times worldwide. In Clash of Kings, you build a city and gather resources. You can join an alliance and fight other cities and alliances. Clash of Kings has managed to gain quite a bit of popularity, not only because of its amazing graphics, revolutionary gameplay or some sort of remarkable advancement in technology, but also the continuous celebrity endorsements and events being run in major cities to create wide

Imprisonment policy in US begets more crime
By Desert Star Staff The mass incarceration policy in America over the last 40 years has created more problems than it has solved. The longer the term served, the higher the rate of reconvicted felons, a new study reveals. The research from University of Michigan economics professor, Michael Mueller-Smith, has proven that prison terms don’t rehabilitate a criminal and turn them into a law-abiding citizen. The US penal policy just doesn’t appear to be working. The criminal world is expanding, despite more and more criminals being incarcerated and isolated from society. The American practice of imprisoning people for even the most trivial offences, not only ruins lives, but tends to act as a college for crime. Up to 75 percent of former prisoners are rearrested within 5 years of their release date. The study says that every year spent in prison increases the probability of a return to crime by 12.4 percent (5.6 percent a quarter). Also, those once accused of committing lesser crimes often go on to commit more serious offences after serving a term in prison. Spending time in prison does little for a person’s chances of finding a decent job. According to Mueller-Smith, a year in prison reduces post-release employment prospects by 24 percent. This is aggravated by a loss of professional skills while serving a jail term.

It’s a vicious circle that puts people either on welfare or back on the criminal path. Prison and marriage are also things that are generally incompatible, the study shows. According to Mueller-Smith, a one-year prison term would only be justified economically if it prevents at least 2.2 assaults, 2.5 robberies, 62 larcenies, 0.4 less rapes, or helps 4.8 people not to become drug addicts. Yet general stats suggest the deterrent effect isn’t nearly as effective, the study says. There is “little evidence” that a long prison sentence is much of a crime deterrent at all.
Young people under 18 often commit crimes impulsively and without considering the possible consequences, according to the study. At 18 they can still avoid serious punishment for their deeds and get off with a plea bargain. So the deterrent policy isn’t working because the going to prison option remains vague and uncertain for young people. For decades, the simplest way to deal with criminals was to put more police on the streets of America, which resulted in a rapid growth of the number of arrests and crime rates falling. For example high criminal rates in New York in 1990s were curbed
by a 35-percent growth in police ranks. A 10-percent increase in arrests yields a 3-5 percent drop in crimes, reports Quartz, while a 50-percent increase in the police presence in Florida resulted in a 43-percent decrease in car theft and a 15-percent decrease in burglaries. The study concludes that expanding police forces helps to decrease crime rates in the short term, while long sentences create more hardened criminals and more crime in the long term.

Anza Brush Fire 20% Contained; Highway 74 Remains Closed
By KMIR News Staff A brush fire in east Anza had consumed 500 acres and is about 20 percent contained, authorities announced this morning. The fire, which broke out late yesterday morning, briefly prompted some evacuations and led to the closure of Highway 74, said April Newman, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Fire Department and CalFire in the county. A smoke advisory was issued late Monday by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, warning of unhealthful air from the fire in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. A fire in an RV about 11:45am along Highway 74 near Route 371 on the outskirts of the Santa Rosa Indian Reservation is being blamed as the cause of the fire. It spread quickly to surrounding vegetation, burning into the San Bernardino National Forest. One person suffered seconddegree burns over 3 percent of the victim’s body, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. Three firefighters were also hospitalized with minor injuries. Bringing Zoo worlds together
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and former President Shimon Peres flank Zoo Director Shai Doron on the occasion of the zoo’s 20th anniversary (Sasson Tiram) Photo courtesy of the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in Jerusalem By Pamela Price The Living Desert in Palm Desert, The San Diego Zoo and the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens, also known as the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo in Israel have a lot in common, and it’s more than their mutual dedication in maintaining an optimal living conditions for rare animals, birds and threatened species. Their programs focused on educating youth are creative and produce results. One such project, between the San Diego Zoo and The Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in Jerusalem, Israel now in its fourteenth year is a success story. At their annual luncheon event held at the TreeTops Room at the San Diego Zoo on August 6th fifteen Youth Exchange participants from Israel were introduced to guests by Shai Doron. Mr. Doron is the Director General of the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in
Jerusalem, which is also known as the “The Biblical Zoo.” This was followed by a presentation of Congressional Certificates for each youth volunteer by Congresswoman Susan Davis representing California’s 53rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. The young volunteers described their assignments at the San Diego Zoo during their nine-day visit and mingled with guests answering questions about their impressions and how they will share their experiences when they return to Israel. Among guests seated nearby were David Edick, Jr President of the San Diego World Affair’s Council and Mark Edelstein co-publisher of the San Diego Jewish Journal. Helena Galper of Coronado, CA associate with this project remarked that Teddy Kollek, the Mayor of Jerusalem for twentyfive years was instrumental in the
establishment of the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo which now covers 62 acres amidst a lovely valley surrounded by green hills and new neighborhoods, encircling a small lake located near the entrance and is ”accessible to all”. The unique aspect to the zoo is partly derived from its impressive collection of Biblical animals. Guests were seated at tables dominated, in a big way with thanks to an assortment of stuffed animals, on loan from the Zoo’s Gift Shop, with lions, hippos, elephants, chimpanzees sitting comfortably displayed in the center. Zoo gossip dominated table talk when Cindy Kjaergaard of Indian Wells, CA remarked that the Living Desert in Palm Desert reported a male giraffe was born there on July 3rd when one of the Israeli volunteers mentioned that the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo has species mentioned in the Bible,

Arthur Rivkin and Mr. and Mrs. Elliott Fuerstein,” Ms. Galper said. For those traveling to Israel, be sure to plan for an afternoon at the Jerusalem Zoological Garden. www.jersalemzoo.org.il Pam Price is a Forbes.com contributor
Burger King: One Direction, Buzzfeed spurred chicken fries By Candice Choi NEW YORK (AP) - Fans of Burger King’s chicken fries may have the boy band One Direction and the website Buzzfeed to thank for the return of the skinny fried sticks. At an event to hype a spicy version of the chicken fries coming out this week, Burger King said it decided to resurrect the fries last year after seeing the enthusiasm they generated on social media. Eric Hirschhorn, chief marketing officer for Burger King North America, said the company noticed a spike in chicken fry mentions in January 2014 that was traced to a Buzzfeed post titled “35 Foods From Your Childhood That Are Extinct Now.” One of the items on the list was chicken fries, which Burger King sold between 2005 and 2012. A few months later, Hirschhorn says there was an even bigger surge when a One Direction member mentioned them. The company pointed to tweet by Liam Payne that reads, “I’m so fulllllll!!! Think I just ate my body weight in chicken fries www.desertstarweekly.com
and sides owwwwww.” The tweet, which has more than 94,000 retweets, is confusing because Burger King hadn’t yet brought back chicken fries. That raises the possibility that Payne just left out a comma, and meant to say he ate chicken and fries - not chicken fries. A preceding tweet also made it appear that Payne was eating at KFC, noted business news outlet Entrepreneur. That tweet included an image of Colonel Sanders and the words “the kernel god bless you and your original recipe.” A representative for Payne said the singer wasn’t available for comment. A Burger King representative said in an email: “Whatever he meant, it certainly helped catapult ‘Chicken Fries’ into pop culture consciousness as a follow up to the Buzzfeed story.” Even if Burger King misinterpreted Payne’s tweet, it worked out for the company. The return of chicken fries as a limited-time offer last summer was successful enough that Burger King added them to its permanent menu this March. A

Mental Tricks to Help Raise Grades
By Desert Star Staff Maintaining strong grades in every subject can be tough on even the brightest of the bunch. This is especially true these days, as students routinely are taking on more extracurricular activities and part-time jobs while enrolled in school. Students looking to grasp complicated class material -- and still have time left at the end of the day -- can stand to benefit from tried-and-true systems for learning, say experts. “Every student from a young age should learn speed reading, speed math and mnemonics,” says Harry Edelson, venture capitalist, managing director of Edelson Technology Partners and author of the new book, “Positivity: How to be Happier, Healthier, Smarter, and More Prosperous.” Edelson, the son of an illiterate Russian immigrant, attributes his triumph over childhood poverty and success in the classroom and business
world, to the adoption of key mental tricks and a positive attitude. In “Positivity,” he delves into how others may follow suit. Here he shares a few insights. Speed Reading: Speed reading allows a reader to take in written material much more quickly than traditional reading. While those wishing to improve their speed reading skills once had to attend seminars or enroll in a course, now lessons are widely offered online. Free software, as well as apps available for download to your phone, can offer training in this useful art. Speed Math: Like speed reading, speed math can help students finish their homework faster and with more precision. Additionally, learning this skill offers students a deeper understanding of mathematical operations. A range of books on the subject, as well as online tutorials, can supplement classroom learning. Mnemonics: So much of school testing involves the
need for recall and recitation, especially as schools nationwide adopt Common Core Standards. Mnemonics are a classic and effective method of memorization and information retention. Depending on the material, students can turn to existing mnemonic
devices or create their own. Positive Thinking: “I consider myself to be very lucky. I have been happy all my life even though I started out as poor as a child could be,” says Edelson, who says positivity can lend itself to success. “Take control of your senses, determine to be happy
and develop a frame of mind that will make you and all those around you happy.” For an edge this semester, don’t reinvent the wheel. Consider first the academic techniques and personal philosophies that have worked so well for others.. StatePoint
To Make Smart School Lunches, Think Like a Kid
By Desert Star Staff Making school lunch can feel like a thankless job, but it doesn’t have to be a major chore. Here are some ways to make school lunches successful, not stressful:
10
DesertSTAR
Don’t Over-Pack: Does your child come home with untouched food? For a distracted youngster, lunchtime flies by in an instant. By the time the bell rings, little Suzie has barely peeled the top
off her yogurt. Keep portions kid-sized and don’t include more than four or five items in the lunchbox. Think Food Groups: Think of the lunchbox as a four-piece puzzle. The basic components are protein, grain, fruit/vegetable and dairy. Try making lunch kebobs with cold cut slices and chunks of cheese (your dairy and protein groups), add a handful of grapes (fruit) and a bagful of popcorn (grain). Or pack hummus, carrots and wheat pita (protein, grain and veggie), along with applesauce (fruit) and a cheese stick (dairy). Olives or pickles add extra flavor without too much extra fat or calories. Let Them Assemble: Pack individual ingredients kids can assemble, which makes them feel like they’re more in control of what they eat. For example, include a half bagel with a container of shredded mozzarella, tomato sauce and August 12, 2015
some sliced olives or pepperoni slices so they can make their own pizza. Add a piece of fruit to round out the meal. Pick Portable Foods: Nothing’s worse than a lunchbox explosion. Whenever possible, opt for dry foods and tight lids. Pack trail mix, dried fruit, granola bars or snacks in single-serve cups, such as Pearls Olives to Go! black ripe pitted or sliced olives. Such foods usually have the added advantage of not spoiling, which means they can be saved for afternoon snacking. Keep Snacks in the Car: Kids always seem to want an afterschool snack. If home is a bit of a drive, keep snacks on hand. Nuts, trail mix, single-serve olive cups and fruit are better options for a ravenous child. Keep in mind, hungry kids are more likely to try novel foods they might otherwise be reluctant to try. Get Input: If your child is not eating enough, find out
why. Ask your child to create a list of foods every few months, as tastes change and broaden. Add favorites to the rotation. FILM Coming to DVD: ‘Walt Disney Short Films Collection’ BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
On August 18, Disney will be releasing the “Walt Disney Short Film Collection,” a compilation of 12 Disney short features suitable for all ages. Anyone from 2 to 92 will enjoy this eclectic variety of animated stories filled with humor, romance and heart. This extraordinary collection features award wining and beloved short films like “Frozen Fever,” with Anna, Elsa. Olaf. Sven and
Kristoff from the Disney smash hit “Frozen,” the poignant “The Little Match Girl” and Oscar winners “Paperman” (2012) and “Feast” (2014). How to hook Up Your Home Theater” had my friend Jo Ann laughing out loud as Goofy attempts to assemble a super sophisticated home TV unit with all types of surround sound equipment. If you are technically clueless like the two of us are,
you will appreciate the humor as Goofy nearly destroys his house in the process of installing a supper fabulous home theater by himself. “Paperman” is a sweet little love story featuring a young man and woman who meet briefly at a train station. Just as they are about to make a connection she gets on her train and disappears. How he tries to find her is romantic and involves lots and lots of paper and paper airplanes. Will they find each other again? Well see this little charmer and find out. “Tick Tock Tales” takes place in—you guessed it—a clock store that also does repairs. One little clock has been put on sale and is looked down on by the more sophisticated, elegant clock in the store. But one night when a burglar breaks in this under appreciated little clock saves the day. My personal favorite is “The Little Match Girl: beautifully told without words. In this, haunting fairytale a little girl is trying to sell her matches on a very, very cold evening just before Christmas As the street empties, she goes next to a building and tries to stay warm by lighting her matches. In the brief warm glow, she sees images from her past when her beloved grandma was there to care for her. The story unfolds wordlessly as classical music
plays in the background. “The Ballad of Nessie” is about a little dragon who has to leave her beloved lake. When she can’t find a wonderful watery area, she starts to cry and cry and cry, and eventually a new lake is formed—Loch Ness, Ness, where she swims happily to this day. “Feast” won an Oscar and the adorable little puppy who loves to eat will win your heart in this tale about a dog, his master and what happens next. The story is actually yummy. “Tangled Ever After” is based on the story of Rapunzel. In this story we get to go to her wedding, but all sorts of things happen. If you saw the film “Tangled” you will be happy to see that she gets married despite lots of strange things that happen before the loving couple says, “I do!” The star in this humorous adventure is not the couple, but the groom’s faithful horse. This delightful collection has plenty of extras, including introductions and interviews with the Disney animators themselves. Another bonus extra is an inside look at how an animated short is produced,

In the fourth season of ABC-TV’s “Once Upon A Time,” Storybrooke has frozen over and added a whole new cast
of characters to this episodic fairytale fantasy for grownups. Now, on August 18, you can relive all 23 thrilling episodes and enjoy the magic and mystery on DVD and Blu-ray. In this season, Emma and Hook unwittingly bring Elsa of Arendale to Storybrooke and encounter the mysterious Snow Queen as a result. Unfortunately for all concerned the Snow Queen is obsessed with both Emma and Elsa. On a happier note, Regina has at last found true love with Robin Hood, but how will she react when her happy ending is thwarted yet again by a twist of fate? Along with the new characters’ Queens of Darkness, Maleficent, Ursula and Cruella De Vil also is part of the story. “Defrosting Frozen” features conversations with the actors who play Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and the Snow Queen. This bonus segment also explores how the Disney animated blockbuster film was adapted for the small screen. In “Behind the Magic Tour, Josh Dallas and Ginnifer Goodwin take you on an exclusive back stage tour of the stages featured in the series. You will see the sets, meet the crew and learn what makes this TV show such a magical experience. Other extras are: “The Fairest Bloopers of Them All,” Deleted Scenes and Audio Commentaries.

Among the gems on the album are a rollicking cover of John Hiatt’s “Riding With The King” featuring King and Clapton sharing lead and harmony vocals, King’s original blues ballad “Ten Long Years,” the buoyant rockabilly-styled “Days of Old” and the heartfelt “Marry You.” Information: audiofidelity.net.

A singer and songwriter of incredible depth, the Canadian native now based in Nashville had released a trio of albums before “Faded Gloryville” that earned uniformly-strong critical acclaim but failed to bring her muchdeserved commercial success. “Faded Gloryville” continues to cast a bright light on the talented Ortega; the Juno Award winner has a voice capable of mining
the deepest of emotions as evidenced by the confessional “Ashes,” tender “Someday Soon” and a remarkable version of the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody.” Fusing rockabilly, alt country, folk and Americana into an original soundscape is the final masterstroke in Ortega’s winning approach on the wonderful “Faded Gloryville.” Information: LindiOrtega.com.

Prince to release new album, HITNRUN By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, -- Multiplatinum music icon Prince, and global music and entertainment platform TIDAL, today confirmed that the next release from the entertainer will be exclusively on TIDAL on September 7, 2015. The upcoming release, the experimental, HITNRUN, was first announced by his band, 3RDEYEGIRL, on BBC radio late last month, following the release of the critically praised first single, “HARDROCKLOVER”. Minutes after the song was released on July 1st, critics raved with The Guardian saying, “Prince is back to his old sensual self ‘ripping jeans’ and ‘making women scream’ on this minimal slow jam.” Billboard called the single “A dreamy rock song”, and Rolling Stone described it as simply “Wild”. “Super hardcore Prince fans that know every song he’s ever recorded - we refer to them as ‘The Purple Collective’ or ‘The Purple Army’ - this album is absolutely for them, because it’s super funky,” reported

3RDEYEGIRL. “There are a lot of experimental sounds. It’s just hit after hit and definitely caters to those fans who just love to hear what Prince has to say, rather than wanting to always hear that classic Purple Rain Prince sound.” Prince worked with co-producer Joshua Welton on HITNRUN – Welton was also a co-producer on Prince’s ARTOFFICIALAGE album, released late last year. The Prince/TIDAL partnership has been in the works for some months, but was quickly cemented out of mutual admiration and respect and a profound belief in artists’ rights. The relationship began in May with TIDAL live streaming the first hour of Prince’s RALLY 4 PEACE concert in Baltimore. TIDAL hosted live audio of the event and matched funds for donations made on TIDAL.com. The music icon stated, “After one meeting, it was obvious that Jay Z and the team he has assembled at TIDAL recognize and applaud the effort that real musicians put in2 their craft 2

Secondly, TIDAL have honored Us with a nonrestrictive arrangement that once again allows Us to continue making art in the fashion We’ve grown accustomed 2 and We’re Extremely grateful 4 their generous support. Easy as ABC: Google gets new CEO By Desert Star Staff A major restructuring at internet search giant Google will see the birth of a new parent company, dubbed Alphabet, described as a “collection of companies” including Google, Life Sciences and Calico, and a reshuffling of the company’s top executives. “[This] is a very exciting new chapter in the life of Google – the birth of Alphabet,” Larry Page, co-founder and chief executive of Google, wrote in a blog post on Monday. “We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity’s important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search.” Page will become the CEO of Alphabet and Google’s cofounder Sergey Brin will become Alphabet’s president. Eric
Schmidt will be the executive chairman at Alphabet, and Sundar Pichai is taking over as Google’s CEO. “Our company is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable,” said a statement from Page, who co-founded the tech giant 17 years ago with Brin. Alphabet will replace Google as the publicly traded company on the stock market, with all Google shares becoming Alphabet shares, and Google becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alphabet. Google will continue to retain its core search and advertising business, as well as its maps division, YouTube and Android, according to an SEC filing. Most of the other ventures will be run separately under the Alphabet umbrella. The restructuring comes as Google has broadened into
other development areas such as drones, pharmaceuticals, selfdriving cars, and venture capital, “none of which make much money and which had spooked Wall Street investors,” according to the New York Times. Under the new structure, analyst Trip Chowdhry told AFP, a French news outlet, that “an investor will be able to see how
the core business is performing, what kind of margins they are getting,” and “also keep an eye on…new innovations.” The move was made in order to “keep tremendous focus on the extraordinary opportunities” currently being explored within Google, Page said in his blog post. The reorganization also
comes at a time when Google is facing regulatory and legal issues, such as an antitrust battle in Europe. After the announcement, Google’s share price jumped six percent to $672 in afterhours trading, adding tens of billions of dollars to the company’s value.

Startup energy brings Disney’s BB-8 droid toy to life
By Ryan Nakashima GLENDALE, Calif. (AP) - If it weren’t for someone willing to entertain a new idea, the new “Star Wars” droid, BB-8, wouldn’t be rolling into living rooms this holiday season. The robot - which looks like a mechanical head on a spinning ball - was the brainchild of filmmakers behind “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens,” who were unaware their puppetry-animated character could function in real life. But in July 2014, the CEO of Lucasfilm-parent Disney, Bob Iger, showed secret images of BB-8 to a startup company called Sphero. It was one of the inaugural class of companies Disney brought into a three-month program meant to nurture their entrepreneurial spirit and maybe generate a moneymaking product. It was like Force lightning hitting pay dirt. Sphero’s founders dummied up a functioning prototype that very night, an innovation that now sits in a special locked room in its headquarters in Boulder, Colorado. “Imagine sitting down with Bob Iger and him pointing to something the whole world wants to know about,” said Sphero CEO Paul Berberian. “And you get to see something that you’ve been working on. What a magical stroke of luck.” Disney’s “accelerator” is the kind of program being adopted by big companies like Microsoft, Barclays, Nike and Volkswagen. The idea is to invest a small amount in a handful of startups, set them up in cheap office space, mentor them, and launch them on a trajectory for more funding, product development, and possibly business deals. Disney now plans to give the BB-8 toy made by Sphero a big push in September online and in Disney Stores before the movie
opens in December. It also took a minority stake in Sphero, which has raised $81 million so far. Kevin Mayer, Disney’s chief strategy officer, says the accelerator program is less about earning a quick profit and more about dreaming up innovative products and injecting Disney’s upper management with energy and ideas. “There’s a different form of excitement that you get when you have new people whose company is on the line and it’s a make-or-break moment for them,” Mayer said. “All the executives who came in and mentored - to a person - enjoyed it tremendously and came out feeling more energized than they went in.” The secret to success? Corporations must “give first” in other words, be free with their time, advice and contacts without an expected return, says David Cohen, the CEO of TechStars, which administers 18 different accelerators, half of which are linked to major corporations. Seeking an immediate benefit through an exclusive distributor relationship or a guarantee of a future equity stake at a predetermined price can limit good ideas and turn away potential applicants on the cusp of trying to broaden their market reach. “That’s what corporate America is still learning,” Cohen said. “Once (corporations) are helpful, in turn, (the startups) are probably happy to have them invest more or buy the company.” Already funded with roughly $30 million before joining Disney’s accelerator, Sphero didn’t need the $120,000 investment that all participants are awarded. Instead, it was looking to tap into Disney’s storytelling expertise to humanize its toy and gain access to Disney’s senior management team. The relationship helped open
In this July 24, 2015 photo, project managers Bryan Rowe, right, and Bill Cullen, play with Sphero remote controlled toys at Sphero, a fast-growing toy robotics company, in Boulder, Colo. The company has collaborated with Lucasfilm-parent Disney to develop the BB-8, a droid character which will be featured in “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.” (AP Photo/Brennan Linsley) the door to Sphero becoming the licensed maker of the BB-8 toy, get distribution agreements with major retailers and polish its instore presence. “I can’t express how much they’ve essentially backed up the truck to help us,” Berberian said. “It’s humbling.” Accelerators are becoming an increasing source of innovation for major companies. Accelerator operators like TechStars and Plug and Play Tech Center pair large companies like Home Depot, Johnson and Johnson, Citibank and Coca-Cola with startups that could benefit from their connections and experience. Meanwhile, large companies are scouring the landscape for ideas that can help them stay ahead. Microsoft has run 410 c o m p a n i e s t h ro u g h i t s accelerator program since 2012, and even acquired one in 2013 - MetricsHub - which helps IT managers keep an eye on their cloud computing resources and save money through automation. The product is now given to customers of the Windows Azure cloud computing service for free. But not all accelerators work.
Media Camp, an accelerator run by Time Warner Inc.’s Turner and Warner Bros. units, was shut down last year after three years. Hal Gregersen, executive director of the MIT Leadership Center, says embracing new ideas can be difficult for large organizations, especially those focused on results, execution and improving profits from existing business lines. “New ideas will never be nurtured for success by resultsdriven executives who either don’t know how to innovate themselves, or truly don’t honor others who do,” he said. “Because most of these ideas are long leaps of faith.” This year’s class of 10 startups has already taken up residence at the Disney space in Glendale, across the street from its interactive and consumer products division. On a recent visit, the startups’ CEOs introduced themselves and their projects as Mayer walked around the room asking questions. MakieLab, the maker of custom-made dolls made using 3-D printers, was looking to
explore pairing its technology with Disney characters, like its Princess line. Mayer thought out loud about teaming up MakieLab with a graduate of last year’s class, Tyffon, which adapted its zombifying photo app for Disney characters from “Frozen” to “Star Wars.” “If you could mesh that with a 3-D printer and have the whole thing come out in a 3-D doll, now we’re talking,” Mayer said. Tan Le, CEO of Emotiv, said she hoped her brainwave-reading headset might follow in Sphero’s footsteps. Software developers have proven they can use the headset to direct self-driving cars. Other applications include helping disabled people drive wheelchairs. Le was well aware her device imparts upon its wearer powers eerily reminiscent of the Force from “Star Wars.” “The opportunity to embed a product into the ‘Star Wars’ franchise is enormous,” she said. “We think our relationship with Disney can be a real game changer for us as well.” Source KMIR
Armed militia group’s return to Ferguson raises concern
By Alan Scher Zagier FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) - The return of an armed militia group patrolling the streets of Ferguson drew criticism Tuesday from both protesters and the county police chief overseeing security amid ongoing demonstrations marking the anniversary of 18-year-old
Michael Brown’s shooting death. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said the overnight presence of the Oath Keepers, wearing camouflage bulletproof vests and openly carrying rifles and pistols on West Florissant Avenue, the hub of marches and protests for the past several
days, was “both unnecessary and inflammatory.” Belmar plans to ask county prosecutor Bob McCulloch about the legality of armed patrols by the far-right anti-government activist group, which largely comprises past and present members of the military, first responders and

police officers. But Missouri law allows anyone with a concealed carry permit to openly display a firearm anywhere in the state. John Karriman, a representative of the group who has taught at the Missouri Southern State University police academy and ran unsuccessfully as a Libertarian Party candidate for county sheriff in southwest Missouri, did not immediately respond to a cellphone message seeking comment. The group’s membership coordinator referred an inquiry to founder Stewart Rhodes, who studied constitutional law at Yale University. Oath Keepers previously showed up in Ferguson in November after a grand jury declined to indict former Ferguson officer Darren Wilson
in Brown’s death, saying they stationed themselves along several downtown rooftops to protect businesses from rioting and looters. County police ordered them to leave then, but group members intermittently returned. About a half-dozen Oath Keepers, all of whom appeared to be white, interacted freely with police late Monday and early Tuesday but endured catcalls and jeers from demonstrators. Protest organizer Nabeehah Azeez called the presence of the armed men “a contradiction in how things work.” “The rules don’t apply to everyone,” she said. “If those were black men walking around with rifles, they probably wouldn’t be living today.” Source: KMIR/ AP www.desertstarweekly.com

US population at risk of damaging earthquake
By Desert Star Staff About 143 million Americans in the 48 contiguous states reside in areas vulnerable to earthquakes, with about nine percent, or 28 million, living in areas with a “high potential” for hazardous quakes. Around 18 percent of Americans, or 57 million people, live in areas deemed “moderate” hazard zones, according to a new report published in journal Earthquake Spectra. The study utilized US Geological Survey data to predict which areas of the US were most at-risk. The numbers are nearly twice that of the latest estimate from two decades ago that found about 75 million people in 39 states were exposed to a possible damaging quake. The increase is due to an uptick in overall US population and the further concentration of population in especially risky areas like California, according to Mark Petersen, co-author of the study and chief of the USGS National Seismic Hazard Modeling Project. Advanced research methods have also added more earthquake risks, including the Cascadia Subduciton Zone in the Pacific Northwest. Much of the population facing mid- to high-risk lives in

An active fault in the northern Rockies, near Idaho and Wyoming, is also at risk of a quake with a magnitude as high as 7.5, scientists reported in 2010. In the lower Midwest and upper South, the New Madrid Fault stretches from southeastern Missouri into Arkansas and Tennessee. Other states -- including Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Mississippi -could potentially feel the effects of a large quake. Other high-hazard areas include eastern Tennessee, the Carolinas, and the Northeast, mainly northern New York
near the Ramapo Fault. While these areas could get a damaging quake, “many of these places are not going to experience a rash of earthquakes,” Petersen said, according to The Washington Post. “There are places in the United States where we think ground shaking could be significant and we ought to look at those areas to see if they are built to the safe levels that would correspond to these ground shaking levels.” The report found that there is a “significant number of critical infrastructure facilities located in high earthquake-hazard areas.” Petersen added that it’s “important that people who live in these areas understand they live in earthquake country and they need to understand that
they should maybe prepare themselves.” The research team analyzed the risk of earthquakes within a 50-year timeframe. The report did not include information about earthquakes caused by human activity, such as those stemming from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. To unleash oil or natural gas, fracking requires blasting large volumes of highly pressurized water, sand, and other chemicals into layers of rock. States such as Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, and Ohio have experienced a major increase in the incidence of minor earthquakes that scientists have attributed to modern fracking operations.

Gold King Mine Spill Hits Farmington Hard
While the community of Farmington, New Mexico, has a 90 day supply of water, there are concerns the region’s tourism season may be over as the Animas River remains a toxic brew of mine waste, following an accidental spill upstream. Photo courtesy of Environmental Protection Agency By Desert Star Staff FARMINGTON, N.M. – No drinking, cooking or bathing with water from the Animas River. Those are the rules now in place in Farmington, New Mexico, following the Gold

King Mine spill in Colorado. Three million gallons of toxic sludge escaped into the Animas, part of the larger Colorado River system. Shana Reeves with the City of Farmington says, as of
Monday, the waters of the Animas River were still orange. Despite the water use ban, Reeves says the city is fortunate to have water reserves. “We do have 90 days sitting in Lake Farmington,” she says. “If we need to go further than that, we have means of drawing from other sources rather than just the Animas.” According to Reeves, the city’s water sources are the Animas and San Juan rivers, which merge near Farmington. The water use ban also applies to farmers who use the river for irrigation and livestock watering. The EPA says its own crews accidentally caused the release of three million gallons of water containing dissolved metals from the abandoned Gold King Mine last Wednesday. The agency says it’s still testing the sludge for toxicity levels, and is treating contaminated
water in containment ponds. Reeves says the American R e d C ro s s a n d o t h e r organizations are distributing drinking water in the community. She adds there’s a concern the spill may devastate the rest of the summer tourism season in the area, which is directly tied to the river. “We just started our branding campaign and one of our taglines is, ‘Farmington is a place where outdoor lovers and active families thrive,’” she says. “It’s the heart of our recreation, and it’s the heart of our community.” Reeves says the EPA has not indicated, even in general terms, how long the ban on using Animas River water will last – and there are questions about the effects the contamination may have as it enters Lake Powell in Utah. Lake Powell and Lake Mead in Nevada are the two primary reservoirs for the Colorado River. Source KMIR

Andrew Michael De Los Santos Murder Trial Begins By KMIR News Staff INDIO (CNS) - Cathedral City resident, who grew increasingly furious over repeated denials by a young man he suspected of orchestrating a burglary of his condominium, took the victim to a remote desert area and shot him in the head, a prosecutor alleged today. During his opening statement in the kidnap-murder trial of Andrew Michael De Los Santos, Deputy District Attorney Manny Bustamante told jurors that the 30-year-old defendant overheard Shane Ayala making suspicious comments to someone during a cell phone call, moments before returning to find the condo ransacked. Believing Ayala had set him up, De Los Santos and an accomplice, Luis Raul Diaz, beat up the 21-year-old victim and demanded he confess that he organized the burglary as the
three men rode to Indio to buy black tar heroin, the prosecutor alleged. ``(Ayala) wouldn’t admit to stealing from him,’’ Bustamante said, referring to the alleged motive for the August 2011 slaying. De Los Santos ordered Ayala to take a shower, don a hoodie to cover his busted lip and swollen, bruised eye, then ordered the victim to walk quietly through the Cathedral Canyon Country Club complex to Diaz’s Toyota Camry, the prosecution alleges. The three drove to Sky Valley, north of Thousand Palms, where De Los Santos ultimately murdered Ayala and then came back months later and set fire to the remains, Bustamante alleged. Diaz, 37, was convicted in a separate trial for his role in the kidnapping and slaying and was
sentenced last November to life in prison. Defense attorney John P. Dolan told jurors that it was Diaz, not De Los Santos, who killed Ayala and that De Los Santos feared he might be next. De Los Santos admits he beat up Ayala at the condo over the burglary and that he wanted to take Ayala out to the desert, beat him further, and then leave him out there to ``teach him a lesson,’’ the lawyer said. But Diaz, a convicted felon who had spent time in prison, was using heroin and cocaine that day and became so high and jumpy that he accidentally fired a pistol round inside the condo while Ayala was in the shower, Dolan said. ``(De Los Santos) is fearful. He is concerned. He’s wondering what’s going to happen,’’ his attorney said. Ayala voluntarily climbed
By Michael Graczyk HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) Texas inmate Daniel Lee Lopez has been trying to speed up his execution since being sent to death row five years ago for striking and killing a police lieutenant with an SUV during a chase. On Wednesday, he’s hoping to get his wish. The 27-year-old prisoner is set to die in Huntsville after getting court approval to drop his appeals. It’s the first of two executions scheduled this week in Texas, the nation’s most active death penalty state. Lopez is facing lethal injection for the 2009 death of Corpus Christi Lt. Stuart Alexander. The 47-year-old officer was standing in a grassy area on the side of a highway where he had put spike strips when he was struck by the sport utility vehicle Lopez was fleeing in. Last week from death row Lopez said: “It’s a waste of time just sitting here. I just feel I need to get over with it.” Attorneys representing Lopez refused to accept his
intentions, questioning federal court findings that Lopez was mentally competent to volunteer for execution. They appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to halt the punishment, arguing his crime was not a capital murder because he didn’t intend to kill the officer, and that Lopez had mental disabilities and was using the state to carry out long-standing desires to commit suicide. “It is clear Lopez has been allowed to use the legal system in another attempt to take his own life,” attorney David Dow told the high court. Lopez, who also wrote letters to a federal judge and pleaded for his execution to move forward, said a Supreme Court reprieve would be “disappointing.” “It’s crazy they keep appealing, appealing,” he said last week of his lawyers’ efforts. “I’ve explained it to them many times. I guess they want to get paid for appealing.” L o p e z w a s p ro p e r l y examined by a psychologist, testified at a federal court hearing about his desire to drop appeals and was found to have no
mental defects, state attorneys said in opposing delays in the punishment. Alexander had been a police officer for 20 years. His death came during a chase that began just past midnight on March 11, 2009, after Lopez was pulled over by another officer for running a stop sign in a Corpus Christi neighborhood. Authorities say Lopez was driving around 60 mph. Lopez struggled with the officer who made the stop and then fled. He rammed several patrol cars, drove at a high speed with his lights off and hit Alexander like “a bullet and a target,” said an officer who testified at Lopez’s 2010 trial. When finally cornered by patrol cars, Lopez used his SUV as a battering ram trying to escape and wasn’t brought under control until he was shot, officers testified. “It’s a horrible dream,” Lopez said from death row. “I’ve replayed it in my mind many times.” Deputies found a dozen packets of cocaine and a small
into Diaz’s Camry, but became concerned when they reached the isolated desert area, jumped from the car and started running, according to Dolan. Diaz gave chase, pointed the gun and threatened to shoot Ayala if he didn’t stop, the attorney alleged. De Los Santos said he heard three shots, after which Diaz said he had killed Ayala and would kill De Los Santos if he said a word, the defense attorney alleged. All three men had been using drugs, and the precise day of the killing in late August 2011 remains murky. Ayala’s sister, Destiny, said she last received a text from her brother on Aug. 21 of that year. She reported him missing on Sept. 2, 2011, and a family of hikers found his charred remains 3 1/2 months later -- on Dec. 19 -- in the desert several miles north of Thousand Palms
Canyon and Dillon roads. Dolan said jurors would hear from prosecution witness Ashley Prieto, who will testify that De Los Santos told her during a party in October 2011 that he fired the fatal shots. The defense attorney told the panel that Prieto was a heroin addict who owed money to De Los Santos, and alleged she made up the story to avoid paying the debt. De Los Santos, Dolan said, played absolutely no role in Ayala’s killing. ``Factually, he is innocent,’’ he said. De Los Santos is charged with first-degree murder and a special circumstance allegation of kidnapping in the commission of a murder. Prosecutors decided against seeking the death penalty, so he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted. Source KMIR

Texas. Nationally, 18 prisoners have been put to death this year, with Texas accounting for 50 percent of them. Another Texas prisoner, Tracy Beatty, 54, is set to die Thursday for the 2003 slaying of his 62-year-old mother, Carolyn Click, near Tyler in East Texas. Source KMIR

Ashley Monroe’s old soul captivates country legends
By Kristin M. Hall NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - As a child, Ashley Monroe says she’d often start crying as she was listening to the radio because she was overwhelmed by the emotion coming from country singers like Vince Gill and Dolly Parton. These days, those roles are reversed, as those very same stars are just as enthralled with her singing and songwriting. Gill, who co-produced Monroe’s latest album, “The Blade,” met her when she was just 15 years old. “I said, ‘How does a kid this young have that depth to write songs?’” said Gill. “It was like she was born to write novels. It was captivating from note one, from the first songs I heard.” Even Parton, to whom Monroe often gets compared, wrote her a letter in 2004 to say that the two of them had a lot in common. After all, they are both blond singer-songwriters from East Tennessee who grew up on gospel and mountain music. “(Parton) had gotten a hold of some of my demos,” Monroe
said. “It was even before I had a record deal. She was saying, ‘You remind me a lot of myself in the way that you phrase everything.’” She also got support from exes Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert. Just days after they announced their divorce, the two were playfully tweeting at each other about Monroe’s album release. Monroe said having Gill, arguably one of the finest country singers, help produce her last two albums has pushed her to live up to all those expectations from big stars. “When I sing in front of him, he’s such an amazing singer that it’s a lot of pressure for me to sing in front of him,” Monroe said. “But I think that’s healthy pressure, because I think that makes sure I sing my heart out.” She’s been slowly building a fan base in country music since arriving in Nashville as a teenager and has scored big collaborations such as singing with Shelton on his single, “Lonely Tonight,” and as part of the Pistol Annies trio
By Seth Borenstein WASHINGTON (AP) - People looking for a shooting star to wish upon may find Wednesday overnight to be a dream come true. Celestial timing will help people see more of the oldest meteor shower known to Earth, the Perseids, when they peak 3 a.m. local Thursday, according to astronomers. That’s “because the moon is almost new and there’s no moonlight to mess with the show,” said NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke. The last time the Perseids (pur-SEE’-uhdz) peaked with little moonlight was 2007. If the weather is good, expect one shooting star a minute, maybe more, said Cooke. The skies will be clear for an unusually large section of the United States, said Weather Underground meteorology

Meteor showers just touch people in a special way, said planetary scientist Sheila Kanani of the Royal Astronomical Society in London. “For a lot of people, it’s a make-a-wish kind of mentality,” Kanani said. “There’s something quite romantic about a meteor shower.” If your skies aren’t clear or there’s too much light, NASA is broadcasting the Perseids

She is a skillful interpreter of musical styles, able to move deftly from pop melodies to jazzy rhythms and can even make a waltz sound contemporary. “I listen to all kinds of music, so I am not afraid to be influenced by all kinds of music, from bluegrass to the honky tonk on ‘Winning Streak,’ to a little more sleek on ‘If Love Was Fair,’” Monroe said. Chris Stapleton, a powerhouse singer himself and a songwriter who has penned hits for Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney and George Strait, said Monroe works extremely hard at her craft, but there’s also a natural gift that comes along rarely. “She’s one of those people that is just kind of made out of music,” Stapleton said.
