‘Carrot or Stick’ California Mandates Vaccines or Weekly Testing for Teachers, Staff

By Desert Star Staff OAKLAND, Calif. -California has become the first state to require vaccination or weekly testing for COVID-19.

Gov. Gavin Newsom made the announcement Wednesday at a school in Oakland. The order from the California Department

of Public Health gives schools until Oct. 15 to comply. The state already has mandated that everyone wear masks indoors as

students return to class.

By Lt. Omari Faulkner, Navy Office of Community Outreach NORFOLK, Va. - A Riverside, California, native is participating in the LargeScale Exercise (LSE 2021) aboard USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41). This U.S. Navy warship transports and launches Marines from sea to shore as part of amphibious assault operations.

Seaman Marcus Davenport, a 2017 Martin Luther King High School graduate, joined the Navy two years ago.

“I joined the Navy for security and to see who I

could be outside of my family,” said Davenport. “I knew the Navy would provide me with an amazing opportunity.”

According to Davenport, the values required to succeed in the military are similar to those in Riverside.

“I learned always to be honest, and if there is something I want, keep working at it,” said Davenport.

Advocates Want More Doctors to be Trained in Medical Aid in Dying

-- Patients with six months or less to live often have trouble finding a physician willing to prescribe the medication to end their misery, so advocates are working on training more doctors in medical aid in dying.

Very few medical schools or residency programs teach this option for end-of-life care.

Dr. Ryan Spielvogel, a family medicine physician in Sacramento, is working to create a training series that can be used nationwide.

“It is incumbent upon faculty and program directors to start offering this training so that ultimately the patients have somewhere to go,” Spielvogel asserted. “Because currently, they don’t.”

Under current California law, terminally ill patients with less than six months to live

need the sign-off from two doctors and must wait 15 days for the medical aid-indying prescription. Patients also must be 18 or older, be of sound mind, and take the medication on their own.

Opponents of medical aid-in-dying often cite religious or moral objections.

Dr. Chandana Banerjee, assistant clinical professor of hospice and palliative medicine and director of graduate medical education at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, said society needs to understand medical aid in dying reduces unnecessary suffering.

“You cannot really let personal biases get in the way of a medical practice which provides patients with the utmost autonomy of how they choose to end their life,” Banerjee contended.

Some states are proposing paying bonuses to people who go back to work. Is this a good idea?

“It is a bad idea for states to pay bonuses to people who go back to work. The government has already done its job to get the pandemic under control with shutdowns and the vaccine,

and it supported people and businesses with multiple stimulus packages,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst.

“Now that COVID-19 cases have dropped dramatically and the country has largely reopened, it’s time for the free market to function again.”

How do red states and blue states compare when it comes to recovery?

“With an average rank of 28 among the most recovered states, blue states had a worse recovery from unemployment claims last week than red states, which

rank 24 on average,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst.

“The lower the number of the ranking, the bigger the state’s recovery was.”

‘Wake-up call’: New Mayo Clinic study

By Desert Star Staff A new preprint study has shown that both the Pfizer and Moderna coronavirus vaccines are much less effective against the fastspreading Delta variant. A fact a White House official has said is a wake-up call.

The Mayo Clinic study showed that the Pfizer vaccine was only 42% effective against Covid-19 in July, a month when health officials repeatedly warned the public that the Delta variant was more transmittable and leading to rapid rises in cases.

On the other hand, the Moderna vaccine was found to be 76% effective in protecting from the virus that same month.

Those numbers are pretty significant drop-offs from the rest of the year.

Comparing the effectiveness of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines from January to July, their overall efficacy was 86% and 76%, respectively.

In terms of hospitalizations, both were more reliable, with Moderna being 92% effective at preventing severe cases requiring hospitalization from coronavirus, while Pfizer was 85% effective.

Comparing numbers from multiple states, including Florida and Minnesota, the data consistently showed that Moderna likely presents less risk of breakthrough infection.

Venky Soundararajan, the study’s lead author, said that the results show that both the more potent Delta variant and a reduction in long-term effectiveness are “both factors” behind the lower numbers.

“The Moderna vaccine is likely – very likely – more effective than the Pfizer vaccine in areas where Delta is the dominant strain, and the Pfizer vaccine appears to have a lower durability of effectiveness,” Soundararajan said, according to Axios.

The new study has yet

to be peer-reviewed. Still, the team behind the research is already reportedly working on a follow-up study that will more specifically look at the durability of the vaccines against the Delta variant.

The surprising study trended on social media on Thursday, with many people expressing shock, using the results to question the effectiveness of the vaccines and suggesting acquiring “natural immunity” was a better option.

Even officials in President

Joe Biden’s administration are reportedly worried about the study. One unidentified “senior Biden official,” told Axios. The results are a wake-up call.

“If that’s not a wakeup call, I don’t know what is,” they said.

Concerns about the long-term effectiveness of coronavirus vaccines have mounted in recent weeks as health officials have repeatedly warned about a potential surge of cases in the fall.

White House medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci has

said booster shots will likely be required for the already vaccinated soon enough.

“That will likely happen at some time in the future,” Fauci told ‘CBS This Morning’ on Thursday.

“We’re already starting to see indications in some sectors about a diminution over time; that’s durability.”

He added that booster shots would likely only be needed in the short-term future for the “immunecompromised.”

Suni Lee’s Olympic Triumph a Boost for MN Hmong Community

By Mike Moen/PNS Over the weekend, local celebrations were held in honor of Minnesota’s Suni Lee, who brought home a trio of gymnastics medals from the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Hmong leaders also see her accomplishments as a major cultural victory.

The City of St. Paul is bursting with pride after one of its own made history at the Summer Games.

The 18-year-old Lee became the first Asian American woman to win gold in the Olympics’ all-around competition.

She captured silver and bronze medals as well.

Bo Thao-Urabe, executive director of the Coalition of Asian-American Leaders who, like Lee, said this is a “big deal” for their people.

“We often talk about our Hmong community,” said

Thao-Urabe. “And I feel like it’s often about tragedies or about needs, but this moment is really a moment of celebration.”

Despite their contributions, Hmong people can feel invisible - and often are lumped in with other Asianorigin groups in America.

Lee’s triumph comes at a time of growing anti-Asian American violence, as well as hardships from the pandemic.

In addition, Minnesota is home to the second-largest Hmong population in the U.S. Because Lee has expressed proud feelings about her heritage, local leaders say other Hmong children might feel they can achieve individual success. State Rep. Kaohly Vang Her - DFL-St. Paul - has two daughters, whom she told can now feel “seen,” like all other Hmong residents in the area.

“For us, to say as a Hmong

woman stood on a stage,” said Her, “an Asian American woman stood on a stage and said, ‘We are not invisible, and we are here, and you will see us.’ That was really powerful. “ Lee’s family has also

captured the spotlight given the strong support she has received from her father, who is paralyzed.

The local leaders say her father’s recognition is vital, but Lee’s mother also

should receive attention for her contributions.

They hope Lee’s success elevates women and girls in what has been described as a Hmong culture that favors males.

Advocates: C.A. is Ground Zero in the wake of U.N. Climate Report

“We need a government that is going to mandate and regulate corporate polluters, fossil-fuel industries, carbon emissions, to get to the change we need by 2030. That’s the solution,” Creasman asserted.

Nonetheless, this year California lawmakers have stalled or killed bills to require new buildings to be all-electric, hold corporate polluters accountable and ban new fracking permits.

Advocates are gathering signatures for a ballot initiative to limit singleuse plastics. Opponents argued the measures would burden an economy already hard-hit by COVID. Creasman urged lawmakers to take action on a national scale from the Biden

administration and Congress, which will depend on the results of the 2022 midterm election.

“The problem is that we don’t have the political will and the political power to do it at the rate and scale that science tells us we have to,” Creasman lamented.

California has been a leader on other fronts in the battle against climate change.

For example, the state will require that by 2035, all personal cars sold be zeroemission vehicles, with clean trucks mandated by 2045.

The state has set a goal to preserve 30% of lands and water by 2030 and become carbon-neutral by 2045.

“Our stay there felt like a weird fever dream. The next day Baby wrote a poem about our experience, which inspired the lyrics for this song.” The track follows the album’s lead single, “Charmer And The Snake.”

Growing up in Boulder, Demitro rebelled through her guitar, practicing up to nine hours a day and neglecting schoolwork to develop a playing style that is heavy but agile, theatrical but nuanced, grounded in rock history but wholly idiosyncratic. With drummers Baby Pottersmith and Jonny Fig playing on

a conjoined set, the band developed a reputation for their riotous performances. Clips of the band’s live shows and DIY videos made it back to Auerbach, who invited them to his studio in Nashville to produce Nightmare Daydream.

The album finds The Velveteers stripping down rock and roll to its most primal elements—the riff, the rhythm, the snarl—and rebuilding it in their image. “We don’t want to sound like a band from a different time,” says Demitro.

Dish Boosts Revenue by More Than $1B

McLaren Racing Investing in IndyCar Team

By Desert Star Staff The first-ever Music City Grand Prix took place over the weekend, but it wasn’t the only IndyCar news making headlines.

On Sunday, McLaren Racing announced it had entered an agreement to acquire a 75% stake in the Arrow McLaren SP IndyCar team. Financial terms were not disclosed McLaren entered a strategic partnership with the Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team last year after a 40-year hiatus from participating in the sport full-time. Pato O’Ward and Felix Rosenqvist make up the team’s roster.

McLaren has made

several significant moves after facing financial issues last year.

Last week, McLaren agreed to sell its Applied Technology division to Greybull Capital, reportedly to free up money for its supercar and motorsports divisions.

In Q1, it completed a $261 million strategic investment in McLaren Racing to fund its teams through 2023 fully.

In June, the company announced it would compete in Extreme E, an electric vehicle racing series that tours remote locations.

McLaren also announced two funding rounds in July, one worth $760 million and the other worth $620 million.

Border Patrol Agents Arrest 2 Convicted Sex Offenders

By Desert Star Staff IMPERIAL, Calif. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Sector arrested two undocumented individuals in two separate events with prior convictions for a sexual offense.

The first incident occurred Tuesday afternoon at approximately 1 p.m. when agents encountered an undocumented individual who illegally entered the United States through the Jacumba Wilderness region near Ocotillo.

Record checks of this individual revealed the sexual offense conviction of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes and guilty verdicts of violating a court order of no contact/protection/ restraining order and theft.

encountered an undocumented individual who illegally entered the U.S. through the desert region east of Calexico.

Records checks of the second individual revealed that Santiago EcheverriaGutierrez, a 43-year-old Mexican national, has a lengthy criminal and immigration history. Echeverria-Gutierrez was previously convicted in Monterey, California, for sex with a minor 3+ years younger, serving 90 days in prison for his crime and prior convictions of driving under the influence with time served.

An Immigration Judge previously removed both individuals.

Both individuals were arrested and transported to the El Centro Sector Processing Center to be processed accordingly.

In the fiscal year 2021, which began Oct. 1, 2020,

El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested and removed 37 individuals either convicted or wanted on sexual offense charges.

By Desert Star Staff Football superstar Lionel Messi has joined the “crypto craze” by paying part of his hefty PSG signing fee in fan tokens when committing to the Ligue 1 giants on a two-year deal this week, as confirmed by the club.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner ended his twodecade association with FC Barcelona after the Catalans admitted defeat in being unable to navigate strict La Liga salary cap rules last Thursday evening.

This immediately allowed PSG to open negotiations with the Argentine, whose father and agent Jorge hashed out the particulars with the Qatari-backed outfit over the weekend before the Messi clan landed in the French capital on Tuesday.

Taliban claims capture of Afghanistan’s 2nd-largest city Kandahar

By Desert Star Staff The Taliban has reportedly made significant advances in Kandahar, reaching the city’s center. The country’s secondlargest city is now apparent on the verge of collapse, and the militants have already seized ten provincial capitals.

The militant group claimed to have captured the southern city of Kandahar on Thursday after days of intense fighting against government troops. Footage released by the Taliban shows the group’s members reaching the city’s central square.

Other videos are circulating online show a large column of Afghan military vehicles speeding through the square. The military has reportedly been withdrawing towards the city’s airport.
