Berger Foundation surprised organizers of the Neighbors 4 Neighbors program with a $10,000 grant. “It was a wonderful surprise,” said Chet Hecht, Outreach Director for St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, which supplied about 1,100 seniors, adults and children with food on Tuesday, during the program’s weekly distribution. “We are so thankful to the Berger Foundation for recognizing

what we are doing here.” As Christopher McGuire and Catharine Reed, delivered the $10,000 grant check, a crew from CBS Local 2 was recording and Livestreaming the presentation on Facebook. The Road To Paradise

Paradise Point aerial view and interior, (Courtesy of Paradise Point ) By Pamela Price If you are seeking paradise in San Diego look no further than Paradise Point near Sea World, a self-described private island paradise that has been attracting guests since 1962. This is when I first set foot on this 44-acre lush, tropical inspired resort in Mission Bay. The resort endures as a reminder of how California tourism turned the corner in the 1960s. At the grand opening party of Vacation Village, the original name, the event was marked by a soaring 70 foot high iconic monument of sorts that proudly survives to this day. Considered outrageously innovative for its era, this island paradise made headlines during the 60s. It was conceptualized by Jack H. Skirball of Los Angeles , an American rabbi turned film producer turned real estate developer and finally philanthropist. The

design conceived by Skirball and his investors was inspired by Hollywood’s need for a getaway that was closer to the movie studios than Hawaii. San Diego was more convenient than a flight between Los Angeles and the beaches of Waikiki. Fast forward 55 years to 2017 and the original private island resort gained a new name, Paradise Point and expanded to 460 guestrooms from bayside bungalows to spacious suites with garden style rooms and “breezy” patios. Today’s guests range from families to the convention crowd. Dining choices from The Tidal (the signature beach restaurant) to the Caveman Pizza Company. There are 14 fire pits scattered around the island which light up the night sky. The resort is pet friendly as long as Fido is on a leash and their owners are willing to pay a one time $150 charge. Personally I

feel it is worth every penny, as our Malteses, Don Vito and Sonny were reluctant to leave. During August a one night getaway in a spacious Bayside Bungalow, features “Chemistry in the Kitchen, a private cooking class for two with a Paradise Point chef enhanced with perks including complimentary parking, a recreation pass, welcome gifts including a bottle of red or white wine with coordinating glasses for $864. Conveniently located nearby is San Diego’s popular Old Town , “The Birthplace of California” a five minute drive away. Today it is a historically significant gem has undergone three resurrections, The Mexican Era, the American Era and the Restoration era which resulted in this fascinating shrine becoming a State Historical Park in 1968. The park remains open to the public free of charge and is as educational as

it is fascinating, being made more so with guided walking tours and museums from the Sheriff’s Museum to the Whaley House. The Wells Fargo Museum with its authentic stage coaches dating to 1851 is not to be missed. Diane Power’s Bazaar Del Mundo Shops (voted the Best Place to Buy a Gift in San Diego ) on the corner of Taylor and San Juan Streets is a fanfare of arts and crafts, including a panoply of fans, scarves and accessories. It is walking distance to Gum Saan, ‘Land of the Golden Mountain’ where handcrafted jewelry, including rings and bracelets from Nepal are displayed. There’s even

more to explore nearby. Visit Presidio Park and Serra Museum (ample free parking) where on July 16th the dedication of a memorial plaque honoring the history of this fascinating slice of early California history was staged. There was still time, after Old Town to move on to San Diego’s upbeat Little Italy neighborhood for gelato (at least 25 flavors) at Solunto at 1643 India Street. This amazing area is in transition with ambitious building projects, vibrant public art and spaces. That’s another reason to stay an extra day! www.paradisepoint.com. if your mobilehome park is either a condominium, stock cooperative, community apartment or planned development, and if it has a recorded declaration of covenants and a recorded map, it is a “common interest development” under the Davis-Stirling Common Interest Development Act and falls under the Act. CC&Rs are a contractual document. When recorded on the land owned by the owners, the CC&Rs become an agreement between them. The agreement is not imposed upon them but came with the property. Therefore, constitutional rights are not the issue – contract rights are the issue. The law allows parties to enter into the CC&Rs contract, and will enforce it except for any illegal parts. Unfortunately, many homebuyers do not read their entire contract when they buy into a common

interest development. The purchase agreement is only one part of the contract the buyer receives. The other part is already in place, even though buyers did not sign it – the CC&Rs on the property. Assuming the buyer is using the California Association of Realtors® Residential Purchase Agreement, buyers should make sure they review the CC&Rs within the initial 17day inspection period normally provided by that contract form. That will help avoid surprises later, after close of escrow. Hoping this helps, Kelly

By Janice Gough Strategies that involve products related to insurance help those who wish to qualify for Medicaid eligibility determinations when one spouse in need of nursing home care. The “ill” spouse must spend down liquid assets to $2981 in Ca., to qualify. The “Well” spouse may also retain amounts to 50 percent of other “countable” assets up to $119,220 in 2016. This includes some CDs and mutual funds. There are minimums and maximums to contend with that vary by state and change yearly to reflect inflation, but these are determined for each couple by asset values on the date of admission. Spending down your money and assets on the following expenses is ordinarily acceptable by most states’ Medicaid programs. Each state is different. In the case of a mortgage, auto loan, or other type of loan, the Medicaid applicant can prepay the loan off, since he or she is legally obligated by the loan contract to pay the full amount of the loan, even though monthly payments are authorized. Payments Related to Noncountable Assets may be a source of the spenddown. Exempt assets include the home you live in, a car, personal effects, household goods and furnishings, some prepaid funeral and burial arrangements. Payments may also be made to buy a new, exempt asset. For example, a Medicaid applicant may purchase a new home if it meets the requirements

for being an exempt home. (Keep in mind that Medicaid will place a lien on the home for monies spent, when it is dual ownership.) Likewise, the applicant can purchase a new automobile if he or his spouse will drive it. Since household goods and furnishings are ordinarily noncountable, purchase of those types of items should also be allowed. A Medicaid applicant can make any needed payments to maintain or improve a noncountable asset. An example is to make home improvements or repairs to an exempt home. Plumbing repairs, home improvement projects, repairs to a roof, installation of a new roof, landscaping, and additions to a home are all allowable expenses for an exempt home. Likewise, repairs to an automobile are allowable expenses. These insurance products are also use as a resource to obtain eligibility for the “ill” spouse. Pre-payment of certain funeral and burial expenses are allowed in most states and rules can vary in each state as to what can be purchased and how much can be invested in these expenses. Annuities are an investment in which a lump sum of money can be used for the “Well” spouse who is not need of care. The spouse is guaranteed a fixed income for a certain number of years. The “Well” spouse’s income is not counted toward Medicaid eligibility. This is a great way to spend down assets if you’re married. But in order for an annuity to work as a way to spend down resources, it must

meet certain requirements; for example, the annuity must be nontransferable and your state’s Medicaid agency must be listed as the primary beneficiary after the death of your spouse. Viatical settlements, or life settlements, give people the ability to get cash out of life insurance policies by selling their life insurance policies to others. If the life insurance policy is not place in an irrevocable living trust, it is a countable asset. In a state which includes a life insurance policy in a Medicaid applicant’s asset total, a life settlement could be a mechanism a consumer could use to convert the life policy asset into an asset that would be exempt from Medicaid asset calculations. A consumer could, for example, could use a life settlement to get cash from a policy and use the cash to create an “exempt” asset, such as paying off a home mortgage. Entering into a life care contract is also exempt. This is a payment to an organization that promises to provide housing and long-term care for an individual throughout the individual’s life. Many life care contract providers

are operators of continuing care retirement communities, or entities that provide a combination of apartments for older people with no disabilities, support services for older people with some limitations, and services aimed at older people who are unable to perform basic activities of daily living. A life care contract is the long-term care equivalent of a staff-model health maintenance organization. It is a health coverage arrangement in the acute health care world. As long as a consumer uses assets to buy a life care contract before qualifying for Medicaid nursing home benefits, Medicaid programs will leave the assets out of the eligibility determination process. It doesn’t matter if you loved one has a massive stroke is a candidate for longterm care six months later. Janice Gough is a financial adviser in Palm Springs. ‘Racism is evil’: Trump denounces KKK and neo-Nazis

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump has denounced white supremacists, neo-Nazis and the KK as un-American and promised swift justice against those responsible for the death in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence. It has no place in America,” Trump said on Monday at the White House. “Racism is evil, and

those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans,” the president added.America

marched from several locations to Trump Tower, demanding the president denounce white supremacist groups involved in the Saturday violence in Charlottesville. The New York City protesters could be heard shouting “No Trump! No KKK! No fascist USA!”Others marched through downtown Los Angeles, including 62-year-old Helen Rubenstein, whose parents were Holocaust survivors. She said she fears extremist views are becoming the new normal under the Trump administration. “I blame Donald Trump 100 percent because he emboldened all these people to incite hate, and they are now promoting violence and killing,” Rubenstein told AP. In Chicago, protesters could be seen holding giant replicas of Donald Trump and

Vice President Mike Pence. The Trump mock-up displayed a sign that said “fascist,” while Pence’s sign said “Christian theocrat.”Protesters also gathered outside the White House in Washington DC, holding signs which read “Trump = Hate” and “Wake up and smell the Nazis.”The mood was more solemn in Charlottesville on Sunday, with mourners gathering for a candlelight vigil to pay respect to 32-year-old Heather Heyer, who was killed when James Alex Fields allegedly plowed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters at the ‘Unite the Right’ rally. Nineteen others were injured.Additional rallies took place in other locations across the US on Sunday, from western Michigan to South Carolina. Activist group Indivisible Guide wrote on Facebook that 500 events

is based on the idea that all people are created equal, under law and under the Constitution, Trump said, and “those who spread violence in the name of bigotry strike at the very core of America.” “In times like these, America has always shown its true character, responding to hate with love, division with unity, and violence with an unwavering resolve for justice,” Trump said. The president expressed condolences to the family of Heather Heyer, the 32-yearold paralegal who died when a car ran into the crowd of protesters in Charlottesville, as well as two Virginia state troopers whose helicopter crashed while they were monitoring the events in the city.A state of emergency was declared in Charlottesville over the weekend, as counter-protesters clashed

with attendees of the “Unite the Right” rally, many of whom carried flags and symbols belonging to neoNazi, Ku Klux Klan and white nationalist groups. On Saturday, before the incident in which Heyer died, Trump had denounced the clashes between the marchers and counterprotesters as “terrible events” and condemned “in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides,” saying “it has no place in America.” This prompted outrage from the president’s critics, who argued that “many sides” amounted to false moral equivalence between the two groups that came to blows, and demanded that Trump specifically denounce the neo-Nazis, KKK and “white supremacists.”

the white supremacists involved in the Saturday violence in Charlottesville, instead opting to condemn “hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides.” However, the White House said on Sunday that Trump “said very strongly in his statement yesterday that he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred, and of course that includes white supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi and all extremist groups...”

Feds to Determine Future of Mexican Wolves in Colorado

By Desert Star Staff DENVER -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is narrowing in on a plan that would remove the Mexican wolf from the endangered species list and hand management over to states. David Parsons, a former Mexican wolf coordinator for the agency, said he thinks it’s the wrong path. He noted that fewer than 150 wolves remain in the wild today, and all their genes derive from the last seven wolves that existed before recovery efforts began. Parsons said breeders are doing a good job of increasing genetic diversity for wolves in captivity. “But the Fish and Wildlife Service is just not getting them into the wild in numbers that really make a difference,” Parsons said, “largely because

the states are pushing back against releases.” Parsons said wolves are frequently seen as a nuisance by powerful livestock interests, and he noted the last time states managed wolves, their numbers declined by 24 percent. The new plan authorizes delisting after populations reach a total of 500 in isolated areas. But Parsons said the agency’s own scientists say 750 are needed to ensure survival in three distinct but connected regions, including southern Colorado. Hailey Hawkins, Southern Rockies representative with the Endangered Species Coalition, argued that bringing the Mexican wolf back to Colorado would increase demand for wildlife viewing opportunities, which she said

could be a big economic driver. “Mexican wolves are one of our rarest mammals, and are treasured for their countless contributions - to ecosystems, and as part of our national heritage,” Hawkins said. “Folks want to see the Mexican wolf thrive, and federal management should reflect that.” She added that wolves are a critical player in local ecosystems - helping to strengthen deer and elk populations and control outbreaks of chronic wasting disease. The Endangered Species Coalition is among several groups delivering public comments to the Fish and Wildlife Service through its website, which are due by August 29.

Proponents of Mexican wolves say they are an invaluable part of their ecosystems, helping to control diseases and providing food and shelter for hundreds of other species. (Brian Gratwicke/Wikimedia Commons)

By Desert Star Staff MINNEAPOLIS – The Trump administration reopens talks Wednesday on the North American Free Trade Agreement. NAFTA supporters say it has boosted American farm exports and trade in general among the U.S., Canada and Mexico. But critics say it has hurt people in all three countries by rewarding low pay, and diminished environmental standards. Juliette Majot, executive director of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, says fixing the agreement would mean changing its objectives.

“Those objectives right now are to expand market share, to undermine the ability of the U.S. government to actually govern, to put that power in the hands of major corporations,” she states. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says exports have increased under NAFTA, but large corporations now control most production. IATP says Minnesota has lost about 25 percent of its small and medium-sized farms since NAFTA went into effect. Nationwide, 100,000 smaller farms have gone under since 2009, a figure blamed partly on NAFTA making it hard to compete against cheap imports.

Majot expects Trump officials to try to give even greater advantages to agribusiness. “Unfortunately, the renegotiation is headed toward ensuring that most of the things that were wrong with it will stay wrong with it, and new things will be introduced to it that will make it particularly problematic,” she stresses. Majot says it’s a good time for people to learn more about NAFTA so they can share their questions and concerns with elected officials. She acknowledges trade talks can be hard to follow, but says the basics are not difficult, and are essential to understand. “Any trade agreement

during a total eclipse, there is danger from looking directly at the sun with the naked eye. Dr. Don Bucklin, regional medical director for U.S. HealthWorks, says it’s not only uncomfortable, it can cause damage to the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye. “The sun is 400,000 times brighter than the moon, so even just a little rim of sunshine peeking out from behind that moon is enough to really seriously damage your eyes,” he points out. On the East Coast, the eclipse will start shortly after 1 p.m. and reach totality just before 3 p.m. Several places around Maryland, including some public libraries, are holding viewing parties and many offer free safety glasses. If you can’t make it to an event, NASA’s website will be showing the eclipse in real time, and the Smithsonian

National Air and Space Museum in Washington plans to be online live from the Phoebe Waterman Haas Public Observatory, answering questions about eclipses. Bucklin stresses the importance of using these safety glasses, saying your eyes work like a magnifying glass, and you can be blinded in about a minute. “If you’re in that total eclipse, you can look at the sun when it’s totally hidden but the moon,” she explains. “If you’re not in that area, well then looking at the sun will damage your eyes. We’re talking about ultraviolet radiation.” According to NASA. Maryland will have partial coverage, with about 80 percent of the sun covered during the event, the first total solar eclipse visible across the U.S. since 1918. For more information on how to safely view the eclipse, visit NASA’s eclipse safety page.

A Few More Days for Public Comments on Offshore Drilling Plan By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. -- The public has until Thursday to comment on the first step towards a proposal that could open the Virginia coast to offshore drilling. The Trump administration may roll back an Obama-era plan to make much of the Atlantic coast off-limits to oil and gas exploration and development. Attorney Steve Mashuda with Earthjustice’s oceans program said Obama’s position was driven in part by an outpouring of public opposition from individuals, businesses and local governments. He said many on the coast feel oil leaks and spills would be just too damaging. “Vibrant fishing communities up and down the Atlantic coast; vital tourist economy, driven by the clean waters - oil and gas drilling off those shores is just not worth the risk,” Mashuda said.

Some in the Trump administration describe offshore drilling as part of an energy policy that increases domestic production and boosts jobs. But critics argue it would put important coastal job creators at risk. Laura Wood Habr is a Virginia Beach restaurant owner who helped found the Business Alliance for Protecting the Atlantic Coast. She said that group represents 41,000 businesses and 500,000 fishing families along the Atlantic coast. She said those communities would see few jobs and little tax money from the drilling, and they don’t need help with energy or economic development. “Tourism’s growing, our military’s growing, and so is our seafood industry,” Habr said. “There’s not any revenue-sharing for the state of Virginia, so there’s no benefit. It’s all

Industrial accidents like the Deepwater Horizon disaster are just one fear of opponents of offshore drilling in the Atlantic. (U.S. Coast Guard/Wikipedia) risk and no benefit.” Another issue is the air gun surveys that would come before the drilling. Mashuda said the sonic survey craft would tow the air guns around hundreds of miles of coastal waters, 24 hours a day,

seven days a week, blasting constantly for months. “Fire every 10 to 15 seconds with incredibly loud sounds, loud enough to deafen permanently whales and other marine mammals that depend on sound,”

he said. “Loud enough to cause physical injury.” Comments can be filed online with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, at boem.gov/ Submitting-Comments.

in policy could result in more equitable distribution of income growth in Wisconsin.” The report makes several suggestions to mitigate the problem. Among them are working to build the skills and education of the state’s workforce, having a strong child care system, and raising the minimum wage, which has been frozen in Wisconsin for nearly a decade. “And we need to remove barriers to work that are holding people back – things like driver’s license suspensions for things that have nothing to do with driving,” Peacock stresses. “We also need to protect the Affordable Care Act and expand Medicaid in Wisconsin.” The report also suggests making state taxes more equitable across income groups, saying that people with high incomes should pay at least as much taxes relative to income as people with lower incomes do.

rising temperatures are likely to bring problems to cities such as higher pollution levels, more disease and water shortages if global warming continues unabated. Report: Wisconsin Income Inequality at Near Record Level

By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – There is a vast gap between the incomes of the highest earners in Wisconsin and the incomes of typical Wisconsin residents, according to a new report from the Center on

Wisconsin Strategy and the Wisconsin Budget Project. In the Badger State, the top 1 percent of earners had income of $933,000 a year or higher, which is 19 times the average annual income of $48,000 that the remaining 99

percent of residents made. Jon Peacock, the Wisconsin Budget Project’s research director, says that’s a huge imbalance. “The very high percentage of the economic growth that has occurred over the last

45 years in Wisconsin: that’s gone to the top 1 percent,” he states. “They’re getting almost three-fifths of the income growth that has occurred during that period of time.” The report says income inequality in Wisconsin is now back to the high levels posted just before the Great Depression in the late 1920s. According to the authors of the report, this widening gap between the highest earners and everyone else in Wisconsin poses a hardship for the state’s families, businesses and communities. All Wisconsinites pay the price if too many families and businesses fail to prosper. By Desert Star Staff SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The effects of climate change on temperatures don’t appear to be deterring people from moving to some of Texas’ largest cities, according to a new report. The website Sparefoot, which helps people locate storage space, rates the fastest-growing cities in the country by how rapidly their average temperatures are rising. Earning places two

through six on the survey are San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and Houston, respectively. Texas State Climatologist Dr. John Nielson-Gammon said he isn’t surprised by the results. He said the reason seems obvious. “Mainly global warming. The pace of warming is comparable to what’s been observed globally,” NielsonGammon said. “And actually, if anything, the natural variability

or surface modifications have suppressed the warming a bit in Texas.” The study’s authors picked the 15 fastestgrowing U.S. cities based on Census Bureau reports, and ranked them using the Sperling Heat Index and a Climate Central projection of extreme hot days for the rest of the 21st century. They found that some of the most popular destinations for those looking to relocate are also

those likely to be hit hardest by the warming change. Nielsen-Gammon, who is also a professor at the College of Geosciences at Texas A&M, said based on the criteria, Texas should dominate the list. “Texas is a relatively warm state with lots of people,” he said. “It is hotter - on average, temperatures are about 1.5 to 2 degrees warmer than they were during the 20th century.” Climate studies show

“There is Only One Side to Racism”

About 500 people rallied in front of North Hampton City Hall on Sunday night, against white nationalists and the violence over the weekend in Charlottesville, Va. (Jobs With Justice) By Desert Star Staff NORTH HAMPTON, Mass. — From Trump Tower in New York to North Hampton City Hall, rallies were held Sunday night in response to the violence connected to a “Take America Back” march by white nationalist groups in Charlottesville, Va. Eric Bauer, an organizer with Massachusetts Jobs for Justice, said he was at the Sunday night rally to

send a message that the U.S. President should not be allowed to straddle both sides of the fence when it comes to Nazis and racists. He said that’s particularly true following the death of one and injury of many counter protesters in Charlottesville. “Donald Trump said, ‘Both sides are culpable,’ and we want to shine a light on the fact that there’s really only one side to racism,

right? There’s racism and there’s inclusivity,” Bauer said. “And we want to make sure that folks in Massachusetts show solidarity with what’s happened in Charlottesville.” Trump’s remarks garnered strong criticism from key members of his own party, including Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, who said the nation “needs to call evil by by its name.” Soon after, the White House issued a

revised response, saying that the President’s earlier condemnation “includes white supremacists, Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazi and all extremist groups,” which the president himself had not mentioned. Bauer said some of the people who went to Charlottesville to oppose the “Take America Back” march are now facing legal consequences. He said the Sunday vigil also was held to call attention to a fundraising effort for their defense. “White nationalists and neo-Nazi organizations are charging some of the counterprotesters with assault and things like that,” he said. “And so, we want to make sure that they have legal defenses for their court cases and to make sure they’re properly represented.” On the online site Fundly, the “Solidarity Cville Anti-Racist Legal Fund” has already met its $50,000 fundraising goal almost three times over. Bauer said the group will be reaching out to others, like Black Lives Matter and Showing Up For Racial Justice, to continue the fundraising momentum.

Facebook suspends street artist’s page for ‘hate speech’

By Desert Star Staff Facebook has suspended the account of the right-wing street artist Sabo over alleged “hate speech,” just days after the artist hung posters in various California cities disparaging the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his rumored political aspirations. Sabo announced the suspension of his page via Twitter account Unsavory Agents, by posting a screenshot of the notification sent to him.“Your page has been unpublished for using hate speech” Facebook declared, before giving Sabo the option to appeal. Facebook did not give any specific examples of the offending “hate speech” but according to its Community Standard’s page states the company removes content “we believe there is a genuine risk of physical harm or direct threats to public safety.” On Sunday, the artist compared the suspension of his Facebook page to having

his telephone cut off by a phone company disagreeing with his opinion.Trying to link to Sabo’s Facebook account brings this comment: “Sorry, this content isn’t available right now. The link you followed may have expired, or the page may only be visible to an audience you’re not in.” Just days before the suspension, Sabo has hung posters in California cities that read “F*ck Zuck 2020” with the iconic Facebook “thumbs up “ subverted to a middle finger following the “F,” when it was announced that Zuckerberg had hired Joel Benenson, a top presidential campaign strategist who previously worked for Hillary Clinton. “It took a week, but it finally came down,” Sabo told The Hollywood Reporter.”Zuckerberg isn’t only a thief, he’s thinskinned.”Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been conducting a national tour, visiting 19 sates. Mostly recently he visited a truck

stop in Iowa, had dinner with an Ohio family, and visited a Ford plant in Michigan. Those visits have generated social media speculation about a possible presidential run. Zuckerberg has said he is not running for office but simply wants to get to know Americans – most of which are Facebook users – better, according to Vox. Sabo is known for lampooning the liberal politics of celebrities and corporations. He has created

street art aimed critically at Hillary Clinton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lena Dunham and Cher, among others. He acknowledges the work is politically incorrect but doesn’t consider it “hate speech” or needing censorship. Last Friday, Sabo also plastered fake ads and posters around Google and YouTube offices in Venice, California. Those ads, some as large as 30 square feet and some plastered onto bus stop benches, ridiculed Google as a place that is hostile to free thinkers. The ads were apparently made as a protest of Google firing James Damore, an engineer who distributed a 10page memo that argues the gender gap between men and women working in tech and leadership positions is due to biological and psychological differences. Damore had accused Google of silencing conservative political voices within the organization.

Special Election Winner Notes Failure of Transgender Attack Ads

By Desert Star Staff FAIRFIELD, Iowa – In the wake of a special election punctuated by attack ads about transgender bathroom access, the winner is reflecting on what voters really seemed to care about. Fairfield veterinarian Phil Miller, a Democrat, faced criticism in the election from Republican Travis Harris for being part of a school board that affirmed the civil rights of a transgender student to

use the boys’ restroom. Miller says a breakdown of the votes shows he carried Jefferson County, where the issue made headlines, with more than 65 percent of the vote. That, he says, tells him one thing. “They trust my judgment, and they trusted the school board’s judgment that we did things properly,” he states. An attack ad on Miller aired within weeks of the suicide of a transgender Fairfield teen.

Miller says one-onone conversations with district residents showed him they primarily cared about schools, clean water, workers’ rights and a host of other issues ahead of the transgender bathroom topic. The 10-point victory for Miller stands in contrast to how District 82 voted in the presidential election, where Republican Donald Trump was the preferred candidate by a 21 percent margin.

Miller says the voters he spoke with were primarily focused on local issues, but not entirely. “I did hear a little bit about the national stuff,” he relates. “Occasionally, somebody would talk about Trump, and I would just remind them that this is a state office.

It’s not a national office.” The special election in District 82 was called after long-time legislator Curt Hanson died in June at age 73. Despite Miller’s victory, Republicans hold majorities in the Iowa Senate and House, and hold the governor’s office, as well.

‘The Red Shoes’ Dances to Ahmanson Next Month

Ashley Shaw. Photo by Johan Persson. For many years ‘Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center’ has provided Los Angeles audiences with the opportunity to enjoy ballet companies from around the world, ranging from the ABT and Joffrey to Boris Eichman’s St. Petersburg Ballet which this year gave us the haunting ballet “Tchaikovsky,” based on the gifted composer’s life and music. Years ago, Eichman’s amazing “Anna Karenina” also danced its way across the Ahmanson stage and into our hearts with a breathtaking interpretation of this famous Russian novel—told completely without words, only in dance. Now, in September,

the Ahmanson Theatre and Glorya Kaufman will present Matthew Bourne’s adaptation of “The Red Shoes,” based on the beloved Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and the Academy-Award-winning film. Bourne has been a dance staple here in Los Angeles. In addition to the upcoming American premiere of “The Red Shoes” Bourne‘s company has performed a variety of ballets that include the American premiere of his “Swan Lake” in 1997, “Sleeping Beauty,” “Cinderella,” “Car Man,” “Play Without Words,” “Nutcracker,” “Edward Scissorhands,” “My Fair Lady” and “Mary Poppins.”

“The Red Shoes,” a fairy tale that has delighted readers for generations before becoming an Academy Awardwinning film, has inspired generations of dancers. It is a tale of possession, obsession and a young girl’s dream to become the greatest dancer in the world. In the upcoming Ahmanson production, the role of Victoria Page will be danced by Matthew Bourne/ New Adventure leading lady, Ashley Shaw in a career defining performance. Rising star Cordelia Braithwaite will alternate in the role of Victoria Page. She too has received great praise for her interpretation of the role. Sam Archer, who created the title role in “Edward Scissorhands” in 2005, will dance the iconic role of

Svengali-like impresario Boris Lermontov. Dancer Jack Jones will alternate in the role. Oliver North, one of New Adventures most popular dancers will perform the role of Julian Crater. Joining him in the role for the U.S. tour is American Ballet Theater star Marcelo Gomes who was last seen in “Car Man.” He also danced the Swan in “Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake” in Tokyo in 2014. “The Red Shoes” is set to a new score arranged by Terry Davies using the music of golden-age Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann whose work ranges from witty and playful to the achingly romantic and bittersweet. “The Red Shoes” at the Music Center’s Ahmanson Theatre, 135 N. Grand St., downtown L.A.

Take an hour to brush up on asthma basics. Take the American Lung Association’s online course to ensure you’re armed with the knowledge of what causes asthma flareups, the importance of an asthma action plan, and what to do when breathing becomes difficult. 2. Assess your child’s readiness to self-carry

medication. All 50 states have laws that allow children to self-carry and use their quickrelief asthma inhaler at school. Having immediate access to quick-relief medicine is critical in reversing asthma symptoms to avoid a crisis. However, schools and parents often use age alone as a measure as to whether the student can self-carry. Use the American Lung Association’s Student Readiness Assessment Tool to see if your child is ready to carry and self-administer asthma medication, as well as get informed about your school’s asthma medication policy. 3. Take advantage of an annual check-up or school physical. Schedule an appointment with your child’s doctor and use it as an opportunity to create or revise your Asthma Action Plan. This is also a great time to take a look at your child’s asthma medications. As your child gets older, his or her asthma needs

may change and this may be the school year for an update. 4. Set an appointment with your school nurse. Remember to share your Asthma Action Plan, which can serve as an authorization form, along with any back-up medications, with your school nurse. Take this time to sign all required medical forms, share whether your child can self-carry their own quick-relief inhaler, and discuss how to manage any asthma emergencies that may happen during the school year. 5. It’s a team effort. Speak with school teachers, nurses and PE teachers or coaches, sharing details about your child’s asthma, his or her triggers and what to do in case of an emergency. It’s also important to have a plan with school personnel on what to do in case of an emergency -- whether that be for your child to head directly to the school nurse or to use their quickrelief inhaler. (StatePoint)

***** Coming soon to the Ahmanson, October 11 to November 19, the theatre will present “Bright Star,” a new musical with music, book and story by Steve Martin and music, lyrics and story by Edie Brickell. Norwegian Bliss By Desert Star Staff LAS VEGAS, -- Norwegian Cruise Line today revealed features and amenities for Norwegian Bliss, the line’s sixteenth ship, which has been designed for the ultimate cruising experience and will sail to Alaska and the Caribbean with select voyages to the Mexican Riviera beginning in June 2018. Norwegian Bliss will boast excitement around every corner and delight guests with thrills, with activities spanning the entirety of the ship’s top deck. Following overwhelming popularity aboard Norwegian Bliss’ sister ship in China, Norwegian Joy, guests will be able to put the pedal to the metal for the first time aboard a North American-based cruise ship with a two-level electriccar race track. The competitive track, the longest at sea at nearly 1,000 feet, will rev up the hearts of all who race around her many twists and turns with four speed settings accommodating novice, intermediate and advanced drivers, reaching up to 30 miles

per hour -- with a special “turbo boost” available on each lap. The electric cars run silent so as to not disturb those seeking to enjoy the serene environment, but guests will have the full racing experience while they channel their inner Andretti, as the sounds of a race car engine are piped in through speakers located in the car’s headrest. After burning rubber at the race track, guests can test their agility at the open-air laser tag course. Themed as an abandoned space station, the course comes to life both day and night as guests go into stealth-mode and compete against family and friends with state-of-the art laser guns. By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. -- Even before this weekend’s violent clashes, members of the faith community in Charlottesville say they have been trying to, “stand on the side of love.” The Rev. Elaine Ellis Thomas is with St. Paul’s Memorial, an Episcopal church, and is also part of the Charlottesville Clergy Collective - an interdenominational group trying to make progress on easing racial tension and avoiding violence. On Saturday, Thomas was in a Methodist church next to the park holding the statue of Robert E. Lee. She said that church had become a refuge from the conflict. “For a place of safety, for water, to rest; to get some pastoral care, some medical care if they needed it,” Thomas said. “So, we stand on the side of love, because we

believe our scriptures across traditions tell us that we must confront evil where we find it.” An Ohio man, described in media reports as a white supremacist, killed one person and injured nineteen others when he drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters. Many have called the act a terrorist attack, though President Donald Trump condemned what he called, “violence on many sides.” Thomas said some members of the clergy protested the right wing gathering with nonviolent obstruction, kneeling in the path of the alt-right demonstrators as they gathered. She said she believes many of those who came to town for the “Unite the Right” rally are motivated by unjustified fears. “One of the chants that we were hearing is, ‘We will

Interview with Marc Webb – Director “The Only Living Boy in New York” Director Marc Webb has a impressive resume, which includes a portfolio of both television and film credits. He was Executive Producer of the television series “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “Limitless,” and “Battleground.” His film credits include: “ 500 Days of Summer,” for which he received two Golden Globe nominations and won the National Board of Review Spotlight Award, for Outstanding Directorial Debut. He also directed “The Amazing Spider-Man” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” and the tender “Gifted” starring an amazing Mckenna Grace as the young mathematical genius. Webb’s latest film is “The Only Living Boy in New York.” Written by Allan Loeb and skillfully directed by Webb, the film is the poignant story of a young man trying to find his place in the world and the surprising events he encounters along the way. One of the most intelligent scripts to emerge this year, the sterling cast includes a most talented Callum Turner as the main character of Thomas Webb, the always spot on Jeff Bridges as his eccentric neighbor W.F., Pierce Brosnan as Ethan Webb, the dad, Kate Beckinsale, as the seductress Johanna, Kiersey Clemons as Thomas’ friend Mimi, and Cynthia Nixon as Judith Webb, Ethan’s long-suffering wife. The film is a visual and audio delight, with a really playful, imaginative opening voiceover introduction to the story. Webb recently sat down with your reporter for an

exclusive interview, which has been edited for content, and continuity for print purposes.

There seems to be a thru-line to your work – even when the images are created using CGI. * Can you describe what that might be? Marc: It’s hard for me to identify that. I suppose I’m interested in romance – relationships between men and women, but the central relationship in this movie is between W.F. (Jeff Bridges) and Thomas (Callum Turner.) I love that first scene between them because there’s a wish fulfillment there. There are a lot of male characters who experience deep emotions and they kind of crack at the end and I find that appealing and is something I am always attracted to. Whether it’s Peter Barker (Andrew Garfield) at the end of “The SpiderMan 2” or Frank Adler (Chris Evans) in “Gifted” or Tom (Joseph Gordon Levitt) in the “500 Days of Summer.” They all kind of crack and have an epiphany or catharsis that is accompanied by tears and I like that. Jeff has some version of that in this movie. I understand that you couldn’t direct the film immediately as you were tied up with “The SpiderMan” but that you helped in some of the rewrites. How did you change the script? Marc: In the original draft, Thomas gets back together with Mimi and I thought that was wrong. I thought the

Callum Turner as Thomas and Jeff Bridges as his neighbor and mentor W.F. Photo credit: Niko Tavernise idea of the movie was that life becomes more complicated, not less complicated and I thought to tie up the movie that way felt somewhat false to me. Mimi’s character wants to go to Croatia. For a character of her age to give that up and stay with the boy felt wrong to me. I felt if she wants to go she should go and have her own adventure; otherwise it would feel like she was servicing Thomas, which I didn’t think was appropriate. So that changed. Understanding why the Johanna character (Kate Beckinsale) did what she did, the key to that was that she really loves Ethan, but he’s been kind of wishy washy about their relationship. When he did commit, that posed more problems than she had anticipated and her behavior kind of rattles the whole house. So that was changed. Another element was adding the voiceover. We wanted to employ a literary device that seemed organic to the film. Then there was the wedding toast, which we added in as kind of a central set piece that helped to point out all the relationships that were deteriorating and all the

relationships that were being born. I think that was the central crux of the movie.

LG Unveils World’s Largest OLED Screen By Desert Star Staff DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, -- LG Electronics Business Solutions unveiled the world’s largest OLED screen and world’s largest high definition video wall. Located at the Dubai Aquarium, the mega-sized video wall was created using 820 Open Frame LG OLED digital signage panels. For this record-breaking digital signage project – a massive 7,600-square-foot screen measuring 164 feet wide by 45 feet tall – LG partnered with Emaar Entertainment, operator of the world-class aquarium in the Dubai Mall adjacent to the Burj Khalifa. “LG is revolutionizing the way commercial space is designed and used because our pioneering slim and curved LG OLED

technology is an iconic piece of art itself,” said Soon Kwon, LG’s global head of Information Displays. “Our Dubai exhibit is an example of how LG digital signage products add harmony to a space in addition to being an innovative solution that today’s B2B customers demand. It’s appropriate that this breakthrough screen is being shown in the largest mall in the world next to the tallest structure in the world.” LG OLED is often referred to as the next-generation display technology because it is emissive, meaning that the display emits its own light, eliminating the need for bulky and inefficient backlighting. This results in superb images with the deepest possible blacks, infinite contrast ratios and life-like colors as well as

wider viewing angles than conventional backlit displays. The use of Open Frame LG OLED signage displays at the Dubai Aquarium is particularly fitting because

the curved form factor of the display follows the undulations of flowing water. Open Frame LG OLED signage displays can be configured into either convex or concave curves in

both landscape and portrait modes, blending into any public or private space. Source: /PRNewswire/

tailor your directorial approach to each project or do you have a standard method of directing? Marc: “The Spider-Man” was a little more chaotic. There were a lot of crazy things going on and I was trying to manage many different departments and situations so it was like one day at a time. I think in “The Spider-Man” I had to really think and be respectful of fans’ expectations and the will of the universe as it related to that character, and the impact it would have on kids. You also have to be careful about violence. The smaller movies are more manageable. You can spend more time sort of pondering them. With “Gifted” and “The Only Living Boy in New York,” the movie is the thing. It has the freedom to be itself in a way that is really exhilarating, which is liberating.

were incredibly artful and very well crafted. I really admired how careful they were and how unself-conscious they were. I know now that I’m reacting to things I saw when I was younger. I saw “Dead Poets Society” when I was in the eighth grade. The care he took with the sound was so beautiful and helped create a world that completely enveloped me. I really admire that level of detail and commitment to finessing things. I just think he’s a great director. Hitchcock is fun and such a master of visual story telling. It’s hard to not be deeply influenced by his work and to learn things from what he’s done. It’s really quite incredible how consistently impressive and innovative he was. Almodóvar always had compassion for his characters, which I value. There were never really any villains. Even people who did despicable things he created insights into their character that allowed you to understand and sympathize with them. Those are a few filmmakers I really admired. Of course I love Scorsese and Spielberg, but they didn’t rattle me in the same way the other filmmakers did. As a director, I’m always learning and trying to be better. The joy of filmmaking is that you can always improve.

or a poet or a fighter pilot, depending on the last movie I saw. I realized that I was not going to be able to do all those things unless I make movies; then maybe I could indulge myself and do everything.

played it perfectly. You don’t see him rage very much. You think of him as being cool as a cucumber, but he really has more of a range as an actor and I liked to see him explode. Was there one scene that was particularly problematic? Marc: I don’t think we reshot any scenes but we did cut some scenes. There was a scene between Mimi and Johanna in the bathroom and we ended up cutting it because it started to feel a little bit arch, but the movie is pretty precise. We tried to be very careful about making it as efficient as possible. Given the level of privilege with these people, we didn’t want to indulge ourselves too much so we tried to make it as quick and swift as possible. Was there one scene that was lots of fun to shoot? Marc: We had a great time doing the wedding scene. The toast was great. The

guests’ responding to that gave us a big laugh. That was really tricky but it was also a lot of fun. I loved what Uncle Buster was saying. It starts off like this is going to be a disaster and then he stumbles onto something beautiful, tender, and compassionate. It’s probably one of my favorite parts of the movie.

What was your goal in how you depicted New York? Marc: It looks like a postcard, but it’s not a realistic depiction of New York. It’s sort of a timeless version of it. It’s not about social media; it’s not about “now.” It’s also not a period piece. It’s just kind of an idealized version of New York. The clothes felt a little more romantic, a little dated, or a little classic. We tried to create kind of a hermetically sealed version of the city and make it into a fable without sort of identifying it as such. You’ve done a crosssection of films and music videos. Do you

How did you get started in film? Marc: I started as a youngster in Wisconsin as a fan watching movies and being really being moved by them and just loving them. I was inspired to be an architect

Did you apprentice with anyone? Marc: No. I moved to Los Angeles and worked as an assistant to a documentary filmmaker who taught me how to edit. I edited for a couple of years and then I started doing music videos and that’s where I got the most experience. I became completely obsessive about music videos and I thought that short form was an incredibly dense and efficient way to sell stories. Understanding how to edit has a deep impact on how I approach a scene. Do you live here in Los Angeles? Marc: I lived in L.A. for fifteen years. During “The Spider-Man” I moved to New York and now I go back and forth. I have a place there and my girlfriend is there. I’m from Wisconsin and New York is how I imagined it to be before I ever went to New York. What’s next for you? Marc: I’m going to vacation in Montana to visit my parents. They live in an old mining town where my grandfather was deputy sheriff. We have a bunch of family there so it’s great city. I’m also reading scripts and might write a bit. I look forward to your next project. *Computer Generated Images

The trio’s folk rock sensibilities recall a long line of activist singers ranging from Joan Baez to the Indigo Girls, and witty uptempo tunes (“Overrated”), intelligent pop (“Not My President”) and more introspective acoustic ballads (“The Legend Of Narcissus,” “Mar-a-Lago”) provide a nuanced and far-flung balance on the timely so-called “polirock” collection. By Desert Star Staff A court in Charlottesville, Virginia has denied bail to James Fields, the Ohio man, who is accused of ramming a car into a crowd of protesters, killing one and injuring 19 others. During the bond hearing on Monday, Judge Robert Downer said that a lawyer will be appointed to defend the 20-year-old driver. Fields was arrested after plowing his car into counterprotesters marching through downtown Charlottesville on Saturday against a neo-Nazi rally held earlier. One woman was killed and 19 others were August 16, 2017

injured. UVA Health Center said of the 19 injured, ten are in good condition, and nine have been discharged. The authorities arrested Fields shortly thereafter. Among the charges he is facing is second-degree murder. The woman who was killed was identified as Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old paralegal and social justice activist. A “Unite the Right” rally was held in the city on Saturday, spurred by plans to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from a local park. Far-right activists flocked to

Charlottesville for the rally while hundreds of anti-fascists turned up in a counter protest. Both sides clashed in the streets, using bats, shields and deploying pepper spray and other substances. The street violence resulted in several arrests and a number of people being injured. Fearing an escalation of violence, the police declared a state of emergency in the city. A police helicopter that was flying over the protests crashed Saturday afternoon, killing two Virginia State troopers on board.

Sleep: More Valued Than Time, Money, or Sex, Say New Parents By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO, -- BabyCenter.com, the #1 pregnancy and parenting digital resource, and Dr. Harvey Karp, author of the celebrated parent guide The Happiest Baby on the Block, today announced the results of a joint survey on the experiences of new parents. Sleep deprivation is the top challenge for families, say 62 percent of the parents surveyed – more so than lack of time (48 percent), money (34 percent), or sex (26 percent). Sleep is the main thing parents miss from their pre-child life, more than time for themselves or sex. Yet since Happiest Baby and BabyCenter conducted their first new-parent survey in 2012, a telling new finding has emerged: Despite having sleep issues, new parents feel mostly positive about parenthood. “Parents are sharing baby care more equally now than ever before,” says Linda Murray, BabyCenter’s global editor in chief. “While it doesn’t completely make up for a sleep shortage, that kind of partnership means parents are less angry with each other about being tired than they were five years ago.” Parents: The New Walking Dead On average, parents get 5.7 hours of sleep at night, and more than three-fourths haven’t slept a full 8 hours in months. As a result, 78 percent report feeling tired

or exhausted during the past week. “The data shows that both partners are equally tired – a clear sign that partners are participating more equally in newborn care,” says Murray. Still, sleep deprivation provokes new-parent anxiety (54 percent) and frustration (44 percent). The most-tired parents reported feeling more distance from their spouse (47 percent) and had more arguments with their partner over time, as their baby grew. “In the first few months, partners are focused on the baby rather than on each other,” says Murray. “Then life stressors start to intrude – parents return to work, have to find childcare, and so on. Most eventually reconnect, but adjustments need to be made along the way, and communication is key.” “Exhaustion is a serious problem,” says Karp. “It leads to the same mental impairment as being drunk! In some families, it can trigger marital stress, postpartum depression, breastfeeding failure, obesity, and even infant deaths from falling asleep with the baby in an unsafe location.” Co-Sleeping Continues In BabyCenter’s 2012 parent survey, 25 percent of parents reported that their baby slept in bed with them for most of the week. In the latest survey, that number dropped to 20 percent of parents reporting the baby slept in their bed. “That change gives me hope, because

almost 70 percent of infant sleep deaths occur in an adult bed,” says Karp. “We want to see babies sleeping next to their parents’ bed, not in it.” Sleep Relief In the new survey, parents indicate that their babies wake an average of twice a night, with no improvement between ages 3 and 6 months. “Parents assume that good sleep just happens, and they’re unpleasantly surprised – and frustrated – when their little one continues to pop awake at night,” says Karp. “Baby sleep isn’t rocket science, but safe swaddling, the right kind of white noise, and extra motion are the keys to boosting sleep and reducing the need for sleep training. “One way for new parents to lessen the stress is to seek help,” adds Karp. “Don’t be shy about asking friends and family to make a casserole, wash dishes, or do a load of laundry.” Deliriously in Love – With the Baby Despite feeling wiped out, by four months postpartum 90 percent of new parents are having sex again. And they say that since having children, the positive emotions far exceed the negatives. They feel more love (86 percent), joy (71 percent), and awe (70 percent). “That rush of love once a newborn is in the house is nature’s way of tempering the effect of sleep deprivation,” says Murray. Labor Groups Want Workers Prioritized in NAFTA Talks

NAFTA resulted in the loss of an estimated 680,000 manufacturing jobs in the United States. (Billie Greenwood/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Some labor groups in Ohio and around the country are asking leaders to prioritize workers as talks begin on revising the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA. Trade officials from the U.S., Canada and Mexico will sit down Wednesday to

renegotiate the 23-year-old trade deal – the success of which is hotly disputed. Supporters argue NAFTA quadrupled trade among the three countries, boosted American agriculture exports and lowered import prices. But Deb Kline, director of Cleveland Jobs with Justice, says Ohio manufacturing jobs were outsourced to Mexico

and industry took a hit. “Go down to the Mahoning Valley, Youngstown and Warren and you will see the ghosts of what used to be the steel industry,” she states. “We’ve lost many of our auto plants and then GE. Many of the plants shut down in this area.” NAFTA resulted in the loss of an estimated

680,000 manufacturing jobs in the U.S., but supporters argue the jobs have been more than made up for as NAFTA opened up foreign trade and investment for U.S. companies. Kline says the trade deal also lowered wages and increased exploitation of Mexican and other immigrant workers. “Workers need to be protected,” she stresses. “There need to be penalties for companies that move overseas just so that they can take advantage of other workers in other countries. It has to be about the workers and not about the bosses and the corporations.” After initially calling it “the worst trade deal maybe ever signed anywhere,” President Donald Trump is now calling for NAFTA to be modestly revised. The White House says if negotiations do not give American workers a fair deal, then the president will give notice of the United States’ intent to withdraw from the trade deal.

Trump orders examination of Chinese copyright piracy

By Desert Star Staff In what he described as “a very big move,” US President Donald Trump instructed his trade envoy to examine China’s policies and practices concerning US intellectual property, a promise he made during the 2016 election campaign. The presidential memorandum signed this afternoon at the White House directs US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to “examine China’s policies, practices and actions” when it comes to transfer of US technology and “theft of American intellectual property” and use “all options” to protect US interests. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross were also in attendance. “We’re taking firm steps to make sure we protect the intellectual property of American companies and very importantly, of American workers,” Trump said. “The theft of intellectual property by foreign countries costs our nation millions of jobs and billions and billions of dollars each and every year.” The investigation could potentially lead to sanctions against Beijing. Asked about Trump’s move, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said nobody would win in a “trade war” and that members of World Trade Organization must respect its rules. “Fighting a trade war

has no future. There will be no winner and everybody will lose,” Hua said at a press briefing on Monday. Washington has also accused Beijing of not doing enough to rein in North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, a claim China has strongly rejected. “I want to say that ChinaUS cooperation should be based on mutual respect and mutual trust,” Hua said. “The Korean peninsula nuclear issue and the China-US trade issue are totally different and it’s not appropriate to use one issue as a tool to keep pressure on the other issue.” On July 29th, Trump tweeted, “I am very disappointed in China. Our foolish past leaders have allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade, yet they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk.

We will no longer allow this to continue. China could easily solve this problem!” Earlier in April, the president wrote, “I explained to the President of China that a trade deal with the U.S. will be far better for them if they solve the North Korean problem!” Last week, the Trump administration announced a plan to levy an import tax on shipments of aluminum foil from China, saying that it

would be a penalty for China’s “unfair” export subsidies. Throughout his election campaign, Trump had accused China of taking advantage of the US and “stealing” American manufacturing jobs. To discourage US companies from outsourcing manufacturing to China, Trump said his administration could slap tariffs on Chinese products imported into the United States.

Hamlet Prince Of Denmark arrives in San Diego with energy and flair Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Hamlet has to be the most ‘traveled’ character in all of theatrical performed history. Its been around for over 400 hundred years and still has the power to draw actors and audiences together in celebration of Shakespeare’s, arguably, most fascinating and enigmatic character. The richness and poetry of Shakespeare’s text in spinning a multifaceted tale of tragedy, revenge, duplicity, and death are the elements that have seduced actors as well as audiences around the world. And its been performed in all languages. “Hamlet” once again graces the Lowell Davies Outdoor Festival stage as part of the Old Globe’s Summer Shakespeare Festival. The ‘melancholy Dane’ and his travails is crisply directed by the Old Globe’s Erna Finci Viterbi artistic director Barry Edelstein, who caps off another winning season of plays and musicals selected and produced under his stewardship. This “Hamlet” production boasts a cast of twenty talented, dedicated and committed performers, who despite a slight technical glitch as the play began on opening night, then settled in, found its lightcomedy, as well as, its drama footings and delivered solid and nuanced performances by all. Edelstein’s personal vision for this production sees the characters, not as British or American accented performers, but as ‘people’ speaking as characters caught up in the time period of the play. His decision to eschew accents is a bit of a boon for American audience ears, in that most are not finely tuned to the sounds of Shakespearean iambic pentameter dialogue. The cast of Old Globe-trained classic actors, however, nicely bridge the accent gaps that other theatre productions employed, and this standard American/ English speaking version of “Hamlet” is all the better for it. Twenty performers on stage can be a challenge for directors, scenic, and lighting designers. However, the creative talent of Scenic Designer Tim Mackabee (who brilliantly designed the world premiere production of “Robin Hood”, currently playing in the Globe’s Sheryl and Harvey White venue), gives the actors a generous space staging area for the Castle battlements, for banquets, for the-play-withinthe play requirements, for duels, all accomplished with clever platforms and different levels. Lighting director Stephen Strawbridge insures that we will able to see the gorgeous costumes designed by Cait O’Connor with his mood-inducing lighting plot. The story of “Hamlet” deals with a young Danish Prince who www.desertstarweekly.com

is summoned home to Denmark from school in Germany to attend his father’s funeral. He is shocked to learn that his mother Queen Gertrude, has already remarried. The Queen is now wed to Hamlet’s uncle Claudius, the dead King’s brother. Hamlet is disgusted by the marriage calling it ‘foul incest’. When a ghost-like apparition of Hamlet’s father appears to Hamlet and his friend Horatio, Hamlet is told by the spirit that Claudius, his brother, murdered him by pouring poison into his ear; stealing his life, his kingdom, and his wife. The ghost tells Hamlet that he must avenge his murder. The revenge plan that Hamlet hatches will impact all those around him. His mother, his step-father Claudius, Ophelia his love interest, his friends, and his sanity. There is always a price to pay, however, when the revenge is fueled by hate, which in turn, drives hasty and ill thought-out decisions. Shakespeare did not call his play the “Tragedy of Hamlet” for nothing. As we watch in awe the machinations of the characters, one gets to step back for a moment to appreciate how sublime is the playwright’s construction and how meaty the roles that are available in Shakespeare’s masterpiece. It’s also a treasure trove of quotable sayings that are still in use in everyday 21st century life. The upside to some of the downside text, however, lies in the performances of the players. Some purists may be disappointed with director Edelstein’s decision to embrace diversity in the casting of actors of color. But stories of yesteryear, even when it comes to the Bard, have been known to break with tradition. Hamlet, for example, has been played by many women over the years. Diane Venora, in 1983 performed as Hamlet in New York’s famous “Public Theatre” venue run by Joe Papp. Last year the great British actress Dame Glenda Jackson, at 80 years of age, took on the herculean role of King Lear, and received stellar reviews in the process. But then, Dame Glenda, is a wonder. In Shakespeare’s day all the women’s parts were played by men. It was English theatre law. We’re now in the 21st century. Just as the English language is constantly evolving, so too is the manner and fashion of how we stage and mount our productions. “Hamilton”, the 2017 Tony Winning musical is a case in point as to diversity casting and its acceptance by audiences who have seen and raved about the show. The company of players assembled by director Edelstein is first rate, and the performance of Hamlet played by rising star Grantham Coleman is an actor to watch. He is handsome, has charisma, on stage presence and power and is blessed

with an abundance of talent that Noel Coward called ‘star quality’. His range runs the gamut from the giddy to a controlled, almost reckless madness in his scenes with Claudius, Gertrude, and Ophelia. It’s riveting stuff to watch. Complementing Coleman’s performance in this “Hamlet” production, is the potent performance of Cornell Womack as King Claudius. It’s a tough, under-appreciated, role by the audience, and he does it without going over the top. Womack neatly threads that tiny needle opening with style and assurance. Opal Alladin as Queen Gertrude, a mother who serves two masters: her son Hamlet, and her own earthly ambitions makes the most of her family situation until fate steps in. Solid support comes from Michael Genet as The Ghost of Hamlet’s father, the role of the Player King and as the gravedigger. All three portrayals are stellar winning performances. Talley Beth Gale’s Ophelia, is properly youthful in act one and her meltdown into madness in act two is strangely compelling to watch. Patrick Kerr’s Polonius is weasel-like and whinny, but he gets to utter some of Shakespeare’s best quoted

Grantham Coleman as Hamlet and Talley Beth Gale as Ophelia. Photo by Jim Cox lines, like the advice “… Neither a borrower nor a lender be…” that he gives to his son Laertes who is planning a trip to Paris. Laertes, in act two is fiercely played by Jonny Orsini, as a man on a revenge mission. Horatio, Hamlet’s loyal friend, also is nicely played by Lorenzo Landini. The ensemble actors who portray multiple characters also are always in their on stage moments. Kudos to stage manager Pamela Salling and her crew who keep the on stage and back stage personnel on their cues and on their toes. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes,

in order to make everything seamlessly flow for the audience. “Hamlet” is a potently acted production that will win over audiences if embraced by Old Globe audiences who may still be yearning for the good old days of the twentieth century. But, times and theatre productions and their styles; they are a ‘changin’. We all need to get on board. “Hamlet” now performing in the Lowell Davies Outdoor Festival Theatre is an impressive and entertaining evening of theatre that runs through September 10, 2017.
