Total Solar Eclipse University of California Riverside to Host Eclipse Viewing Event August 21, 2017 KMIR News Staff Riverside, CA - A week from today, the first total solar eclipse across the United States in nearly 40 years will occur, with partial darkness falling over Southern California, where UC Riverside researchers will be offering residents an opportunity to watch through solar-filtered telescopes. The UCR Department of Physics & Astronomy will be hosting the eclipse viewing party adjacent to the campus Bell Tower, beginning about
10 a.m. next Monday. Using the filtered telescopes, members of the community will be able to watch as the moon blocks the sun over a nearly two-hour span, marking the beginning of a new moon phase that situates the small planet at the right angle and orbital plane to create what the American Astronomical Society calls a “cosmic coincidence,’’ yielding a total eclipse viewable only on the North American continent. According to scientists, Southern California will be in
the penumbra, with roughly 60 percent of the sun in shade. However, the corona will be entirely hidden behind the moon beginning about 10 a.m. as viewed from the coast of Oregon. From there, totality will continue for the next 90 minutes, cutting across the nation’s midsection. According to NASA, only the coronal rim will be discernable as the eclipse progresses, with darkness falling in Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois,
KMIR News Staff Palm Springs, CA Riverside County officials mourned the recent passing of Al McCandless, former congressman, veteran and county supervisor, who represented the Coachella Valley. McCandless died at his La Quinta home last Wednesday at the age of 90. Born in Brawley,
McCandless served as Fourth District Supervisor from 1972 to 1982. The Fourth District covers the Coachella Valley eastward to the Arizona state border. He also sat on the boards of the Riverside County Housing Authority, SunLine Transit Agency and the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
Following his stint on the Board of Supervisors, he was elected to represent California’s 37th Congressional District, which he served for the next 12 years. McCandless also served in the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of captain. Current Fourth District

According to the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association, some aviators plan to chase the path of the total eclipse
across multiple states. The last total solar eclipse over the contiguous U.S. was visible in the northwest tier of the country in February 1979. After Aug. 21, the next one will happen in April 2024, according to NASA. That eclipse, however, will only be viewable in the central and eastern United States. Solar Energy Trend Won’t be Eclipsed Monday By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Ore. Not even Monday’s solar eclipse could cast a shadow on the trend toward solar energy in Oregon. People are following lower costs. According to the Energy Trust of Oregon, the cost for installation of solar panels on homes has gone down 17 percent since 2014. Lizzie Rubado, the trust’s programstrategies manager, said it helped 1,200 residential-rooftop installations then. The number is expected to be closer to Rubado said solar customers benefit from net metering, which allows them to feed any excess energy back into the grid, and also newer technology. “It’s becoming increasingly common for people to install battery-storage systems with their PV array,” she said, “which allows them to manage more of
their consumption themselves, personally balance how much they’re using from the utility and when with what they’re using from their solar system.” A photovoltaic array is the panel that absorbs energy. Batteries have the benefit of storing energy that can be used in the event of a blackout - or a solar eclipse. Commercial support has gone up as well. The Energy Trust expects to help with three times as many commercial installations this year as it did in 2014. Rubado expects technology similar to the batteries that are helping residential customers - on a much larger scale - will attract utility companies to solar. “It would allow for electricity to essentially serve the grid at times when it is most advantageous to the utility,” she said, “so like, at peak times that systems would

Pastors in Charlottesville say they’ve been working to avoid the kind of violence the city saw over the weekend. (ACLU of Virginia/Twitter) By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. -- Even before this weekend’s violent clashes, members of the faith community in Charlottesville say they have been trying to, “stand on the side of love.” The Rev. Elaine Ellis Thomas is with St. Paul’s Memorial, an Episcopal church, and is also part of the Charlottesville Clergy Collective - an interdenominational group trying to make progress on easing racial tension and avoiding violence. On Saturday, Thomas was in a Methodist church next to the park holding the statue of Robert E. Lee. She said that church had become a refuge from the conflict. “For a place of safety, for water, to rest; to get some pastoral care, some medical care if they needed it,” Thomas said. “So, we stand on the side of love,
because we believe our scriptures across traditions tell us that we must confront evil where we find it.” An Ohio man, described in media reports as a white
supremacist, killed one person and injured nineteen others when he drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters. Many have called the act a terrorist attack, though
President Donald Trump condemned what he called, “violence on many sides.” Thomas said some members of the clergy protested the right wing gathering with nonviolent obstruction, kneeling in the path of the alt-right demonstrators as they gathered. She said she believes many of those who came to town for the “Unite the Right” rally are motivated by unjustified fears. “One of the chants that we were hearing is, ‘We will not be replaced.’ The idea that anyone is trying to replace anyone is astonishing to me, because that is not who and what we are,” she said. “We believe that there is sufficient love, energy, resources, everything - for everybody.” Efforts to remove Confederate monuments in other southern cities have also provoked backlash.

Colorado Celebrates the Benefits of Breastfeeding By Desert Star Staff DENVER - August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, and today at Cole Park in Alamosa, an event celebrates nature’s solution for getting newborns all the nutrients they need. It’s co-sponsored by Valley Wide Health Systems, where Katy Baer directs its Women, Infants and Children program. Breastfeeding is good for moms and babies, she said, explaining that it helps women lose weight faster after pregnancy and results in fewer incidents of childhood obesity, cancer and other illness. “Infants who are breastfed tend to have sort of this builtin immunity that comes from the mother’s milk,” she said, “and there are many, many, many things that are found in breast milk that cannot be replicated in formula.” Unlike formula, mother’s
milk is free, Baer said, adding that breastfeeding also helps mothers and newborns bond. The connection leads to better body-temperature regulation, and breastfeeding also stimulates neuron activity, which fuels brain development and has been shown to produce higher IQs. Colorado law protects the right to breastfeed in public, requires workplace accommodations for nursing mothers and also allows parents to postpone jury duty. This year’s Valley Wide theme is “Find Your Village,” which Baer hopes will be a beacon to expectant and new mothers who want to learn more and access resources. She said families still face social and cultural barriers that stigmatize breastfeeding. “Many women are just so unfamiliar with it because it’s hidden in our culture,” she said.

By Desert Star Staff SANTA FE, N.M. - More than 100,000 people will descend on Santa Fe for the annual Indian Market this weekend, and many may not realize lawmakers are working to make sure they buy genuine Native American art - not fakes or imports. New Mexico’s U.S. senators held hearings on the spread of bogus Native American merchandise last month, arguing that the federal government needs to improve protections for tribal artists against fraud that undercuts the value of their work. Navajo weaver Joyce Begay-Foss, director of education at the New Mexico Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, said she doesn’t want shoppers to end up
with buyer’s remorse. “If you don’t have that knowledge of buying Indian art, you need to do your homework now,” she said. “It’s come to that point, because there is so much imported product on the market - and you can even have Native people even selling imported products. It’s come to that point, too.” Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., vice chairman of the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Indian Arts, intends to introduce a bill to strengthen federal law, saying it needs to be modernized to include online sales and address international jewelry rings that copy Native American designs. Ken Van Wey, program specialist at the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, said this year’s Indian Market will have
an information booth about the laws that govern genuine Native American goods. He advised shoppers to treat these purchases the same as they would at a big-box store. “I highly recommend that people be aware of what they’re buying,” he said. “People are going to be paying top dollar for items. I would think that if you were spending $2,000 to $3,000 on an object of art, you would want at least the same written guarantees and same sorts of things that you would want if you were buying $300 worth of home electronics.” The annual Indian Market began in 1922. More than 1,000 artists representing more than 100 tribes will participate in a juried show of pottery, baskets, textiles, silver, beadwork and paintings.

For many years ‘Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center’ has provided Los Angeles audiences with the opportunity to enjoy ballet companies from around the world, ranging from the ABT and Joffrey to Boris Eichman’s St. Petersburg Ballet which this year gave us the haunting ballet “Tchaikovsky,” based on the gifted composer’s life and music. Years ago, Eichman’s amazing “Anna Karenina” also danced its way across the Ahmanson stage and into our hearts with a breathtaking interpretation of this famous Russian novel—told completely without words, only in dance. Now, in September,
the Ahmanson Theatre and Glorya Kaufman will present Matthew Bourne’s adaptation of “The Red Shoes,” based on the beloved Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and the Academy-Award-winning film. Bourne has been a dance staple here in Los Angeles. In addition to the upcoming American premiere of “The Red Shoes” Bourne‘s company has performed a variety of ballets that include the American premiere of his “Swan Lake” in 1997, “Sleeping Beauty,” “Cinderella,” “Car Man,” “Play Without Words,” “Nutcracker,” “Edward Scissorhands,” “My Fair Lady” and “Mary Poppins.”
“The Red Shoes,” a fairy tale that has delighted readers for generations before becoming an Academy Awardwinning film, has inspired generations of dancers. It is a tale of possession, obsession and a young girl’s dream to become the greatest dancer in the world. In the upcoming Ahmanson production, the role of Victoria Page will be danced by Matthew Bourne/ New Adventure leading lady, Ashley Shaw in a career defining performance. Rising star Cordelia Braithwaite will alternate in the role of Victoria Page. She too has received great praise for her interpretation of the role. Sam Archer, who created the title role in “Edward Scissorhands” in 2005, will dance the iconic role of
Svengali-like impresario Boris Lermontov. Dancer Jack Jones will alternate in the role. Oliver North, one of New Adventures most popular dancers will perform the role of Julian Crater. Joining him in the role for the U.S. tour is American Ballet Theater star Marcelo Gomes who was last seen in “Car Man.” He also danced the Swan in “Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake” in Tokyo in 2014. “The Red Shoes” is set to a new score arranged by Terry Davies using the music of golden-age Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann whose work ranges from witty and playful to the achingly romantic and bittersweet. “The Red Shoes” at the Music Center’s Ahmanson Theatre, 135 N. Take an hour to brush up on asthma basics. Take the American Lung Association’s online course to ensure you’re armed with the knowledge of what causes asthma flareups, the importance of an asthma action plan, and what to do when breathing becomes difficult. 2. Assess your child’s readiness to self-carry
medication. All 50 states have laws that allow children to self-carry and use their quickrelief asthma inhaler at school. Having immediate access to quick-relief medicine is critical in reversing asthma symptoms to avoid a crisis. However, schools and parents often use age alone as a measure as to whether the student can self-carry. Use the American Lung Association’s Student Readiness Assessment Tool to see if your child is ready to carry and self-administer asthma medication, as well as get informed about your school’s asthma medication policy. 3. Take advantage of an annual check-up or school physical. Schedule an appointment with your child’s doctor and use it as an opportunity to create or revise your Asthma Action Plan. This is also a great time to take a look at your child’s asthma medications. As your child gets older, his or her asthma needs
may change and this may be the school year for an update. 4. Set an appointment with your school nurse. Remember to share your Asthma Action Plan, which can serve as an authorization form, along with any back-up medications, with your school nurse. Take this time to sign all required medical forms, share whether your child can self-carry their own quick-relief inhaler, and discuss how to manage any asthma emergencies that may happen during the school year. 5. It’s a team effort. Speak with school teachers, nurses and PE teachers or coaches, sharing details about your child’s asthma, his or her triggers and what to do in case of an emergency. It’s also important to have a plan with school personnel on what to do in case of an emergency -- whether that be for your child to head directly to the school nurse or to use their quickrelief inhaler. Teenager dies in Cathedral City Shooting KMIR Patrick Price Cathedral City, CA Cathedral City Police are investigating after a teenager was shot and killed at a house on Tachevah Road early Sunday morning. The victim is identified as 19-year-old Solomon Patrick of Palm Springs. The shooting happened after a fight began at another home in Cathedral City just after 1 a.m. Sunday. The people involved in that incident then went to another home off Tachevah Drive, where shots were fired. KMIR Viewers tells us this happened at a house party. Investigators say it started as a fight between two groups of males, and during that argument, black handguns were drawn. That’s when Patrick was shot in the torso several times. He was treated at the scene but died shortly after. Family members say
Patrick was a 2015 Desert Hot Springs high school graduate and former star football player for the Golden Eagles. His former football coach, Will Littell, released this statement on Patrick’s death: “The loss of Solomon Patrick is beyond belief to my and the Desert Hot Springs High School family. He was an amazing young man with a bright future. Solomon always had a smile on his face, was selfless, always willing to do what was asked of him and a great student-athlete. Solomon will be missed but never forgotten. Solomon had an impact on my life in the most positive way. I will always remember conversations we had and I will always feel lucky that I was able to be part of his life. This is a tragedy that I have dealt with before in losing former players and it saddens me to lose these young men before they have

Helping Your Child Beat Back-To-School Anxiety By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. - The start of another school year, just a couple weeks away, can trigger some anxiety among younger students, but there are things you can do to help minimize your child’s concerns. Dr. Marcia Slattery, director of the UW Health Anxiety Disorder Program, said you’ll likely notice that younger school-age children may become more irritable as the onset of school approaches. “The grade school kids definitely start asking more,” she said. “They start wanting to have detail about what’s going to happen, basically trying to say, ‘What are the unknowns that I need to know about?’ So, more questions, more seeking information.” Slattery works with parents and children who have serious anxiety problems, helping them practice being in situations that make them apprehensive and learn to control their anxiety in those
situations. She said visiting the school with your child before the start of the school year can help reduce their concerns about unknowns. Having anxiety about being in a new school or a new grade with new students is nothing to be overly concerned about, Slattery said. All children will have some anxiety about any kind of change, she said. “I think it becomes more of an issue if it’s more of an underlying anxiety problem for the child - if the anxiety persists despite getting back into the school and getting into the routine, et cetera,” she said. “But having some of the apprehension and the anxiety before the start of school is very normal.” Slattery said it’s important to listen to and respond to your child’s questions about the upcoming school year. “I think one of the biggest mistakes we often want to make is saying, ‘Don’t worry

Hamlet Prince Of Denmark arrives in San Diego with energy and flair Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Hamlet has to be the most ‘traveled’ character in all of theatrical performed history. Its been around for over 400 hundred years and still has the power to draw actors and audiences together in celebration of Shakespeare’s, arguably, most fascinating and enigmatic character. The richness and poetry of Shakespeare’s text in spinning a multifaceted tale of tragedy, revenge, duplicity, and death are the elements that have seduced actors as well as audiences around the world. And its been performed in all languages. “Hamlet” once again graces the Lowell Davies Outdoor Festival stage as part of the Old Globe’s Summer Shakespeare Festival. The ‘melancholy Dane’ and his travails is crisply directed by the Old Globe’s Erna Finci Viterbi artistic director Barry Edelstein, who caps off another winning season of plays and musicals selected and produced under his stewardship. This “Hamlet” production boasts a cast of twenty talented, dedicated and committed performers, who despite a slight technical glitch as the play began on opening night, then settled in, found its light-comedy, as well as, its drama footings and delivered solid and nuanced performances by all. Edelstein’s personal vision for this production sees the characters, not as British or American accented performers, but as ‘people’ speaking as characters caught up in the time period of the play. His decision to eschew accents is a bit of a boon for American audience ears, in that most are not finely tuned to the sounds of Shakespearean iambic pentameter dialogue. The cast of Old Globe-trained classic actors, however, nicely bridge
the accent gaps that other theatre productions employed, and this standard American/ English speaking version of “Hamlet” is all the better for it. Twenty performers on stage can be a challenge for directors, scenic, and lighting designers. However, the creative talent of Scenic Designer Tim Mackabee (who brilliantly designed the world premiere production of “Robin Hood”, currently playing in the Globe’s Sheryl and Harvey White venue), gives the actors a generous space staging area for the Castle battlements, for banquets, for the-play-withinthe play requirements, for duels, all accomplished with clever platforms and different levels. Lighting director Stephen Strawbridge insures that we will able to see the gorgeous costumes designed by Cait O’Connor with his mood-inducing lighting plot. The story of “Hamlet” deals with a young Danish Prince who is summoned home to Denmark from school in Germany to attend his father’s funeral. He is shocked to learn that his mother Queen Gertrude, has already remarried. The Queen is now wed to Hamlet’s uncle Claudius, the dead King’s brother. Hamlet is disgusted by the marriage calling it ‘foul incest’. When a ghost-like apparition of Hamlet’s father appears to Hamlet and his friend Horatio, Hamlet is told by the spirit that Claudius, his brother, murdered him by pouring poison into his ear; stealing his life, his kingdom, and his wife. The ghost tells Hamlet that he must avenge his murder. The revenge plan that Hamlet hatches will impact all those around him. His mother, his step-father Claudius, Ophelia his love interest, his friends, and his sanity. There is always a price to pay, however, when the revenge is fueled by hate, which in turn, drives hasty and ill thought-out decisions. Shakespeare did

As we watch in awe the machinations of the characters, one gets to step back for a moment to appreciate how sublime is the playwright’s construction and how meaty the roles that are available in Shakespeare’s masterpiece. It’s also a treasure trove of quotable sayings that are still in use in everyday 21st century life. The upside to some of the downside text, however, lies in the performances of the players. Some purists may be disappointed with director Edelstein’s decision to embrace diversity in the casting of actors of color. But stories of yesteryear, even when it comes to the Bard, have been known to break with tradition. Hamlet, for example, has been played by many women over the years. Diane Venora, in 1983 performed as Hamlet in New York’s famous “Public Theatre” venue run by Joe Papp. Last year the great British actress Dame Glenda Jackson, at 80 years of age, took on the herculean role of King Lear, and received stellar reviews in the process. But then, Dame Glenda, is a wonder. In Shakespeare’s day all the women’s parts were played by men. It was English theatre law. We’re now in the 21st century. Just as the English language is constantly evolving, so too is the manner and fashion of how we stage and mount our productions. “Hamilton”, the
2017 Tony Winning musical is a case in point as to diversity casting and its acceptance by audiences who have seen and raved about the show. The company of players assembled by director Edelstein is first rate, and the performance of Hamlet played by rising star Grantham Coleman is an actor to watch. He is handsome, has charisma, on stage presence and power and is blessed with an abundance of talent that Noel Coward called ‘star quality’. His range runs the gamut from the giddy to a controlled, almost reckless madness in his scenes with Claudius, Gertrude, and Ophelia. It’s riveting stuff to watch. Complementing Coleman’s performance in this “Hamlet” production, is the potent performance of Cornell Womack as King Claudius. It’s a tough, under-appreciated, role by the audience, and he does it without going over the top. Womack neatly threads that tiny needle opening with style and assurance. Opal Alladin as Queen Gertrude, a mother who serves two masters: her son Hamlet, and her own earthly ambitions makes the most of her family situation until fate steps in. Solid support comes from Michael Genet as The Ghost of Hamlet’s father, the role of the Player King and as the gravedigger. All three portrayals are stellar winning performances. Talley Beth

Gale’s Ophelia, is properly youthful in act one and her meltdown into madness in act two is strangely compelling to watch. Patrick Kerr’s Polonius is weasel-like and whinny, but he gets to utter some of Shakespeare’s best quoted lines, like the advice “… Neither a borrower nor a lender be…” that he gives to his son Laertes who is planning a trip to Paris. Laertes, in act two is fiercely played by Jonny Orsini, as a man on a revenge mission. Horatio, Hamlet’s loyal friend, also is nicely played by Lorenzo Landini. The ensemble actors who portray multiple characters also are always in their on stage moments. Kudos to stage manager Pamela Salling and her crew who keep the on stage and back stage personnel on their cues and on their toes. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes, in order to make everything seamlessly flow for the audience. “Hamlet” is a potently acted production that will win over audiences if embraced by Old Globe audiences who may still be yearning for the good old days of the twentieth century. But, times and theatre productions and their styles; they are a ‘changin’. We all need to get on board. “Hamlet” now performing in the Lowell Davies Outdoor Festival Theatre is an impressive and entertaining evening of theatre that runs through September 10, 2017.
