Affluent Californians using far more water amid severe drought – study By Desert Star Staff Residents of some of southern California’s wealthiest communities are using around three times more water than other nearby areas, a new study reports. In the throes of a severe water shortage, the state has mandated a 25-percent cut in water use. Using data from the state Department of Water and Power,
researchers at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) found that the average affluent neighborhood in the Los Angeles metropolitan area consumes three times more than lesswealthy communities. “We found that overall about 50 percent, if not more, of water, is used on outdoor irrigation,” said Dr. Stephanie Pincetl, lead researcher on the study,
according to CBS News. “Bigger house, bigger lawn, more water use -- more water, and they can afford it.” Pincetl said richer Californians are “lacking a sense that we are all in this together.” “The problem lies, in part, in the social isolation of the rich, the moral isolation of the rich,” Pincetl told the Los Angeles Times.
Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull to lead iHeartRadio concert
Last week, California Governor Jerry Brown issued the state’s first mandatory water restrictions amid a devastating four-year drought. California may only have 12 month’s worth of water left, as snowpack measurements for the year are set to hit record lows. Through the restrictions, officials say they are trying to change the culture from wanton
water usage that enable lush, green yards to one of a more considerate, conservationminded approach. “Some people -- believe it or not -- don’t know we are in a drought,” George Murdoch, general manager of utilities in Newport Beach, told the Times. “We have people that own a Continues on Page 2

Little-Known Chinese Customs Travelers Should Know
By Desert Star Staff Chinese outbound tourism continues to rise according to the Hotels.com™ Chinese International Travel Monitor (CITM), and with the U.S. being the most visited international destination among Chinese travelers in 2014, many U.S. hotels are catering to Chinese culture and traveler preferences. But China is also projected to be a top 10 international outbound destination for Americans this year. To help American travelers considering a visit to this vast and diverse country, Hotels. com has compiled some cultural traditions, etiquette tips and quirky insights to keep in mind. “The best part of traveling is learning about cultures much different than our own, but it helps to be in-the-know before you jump on the plane,” said Taylor L. Cole, APR, Hotels.com travel expert. Below are some behaviors and traditions U.S. travelers
can learn to prepare for travel to China: 1. Smile! According to a Hotels.com survey, 12% of Chinese respondents said they always greet fellow guests on a hotel elevator, but 35% only greet guests on an elevator if they look friendly and smile. 2. Tea etiquette: Always serve yourself last when pouring tea – start with the eldest person at the table first. To show appreciation for someone pouring your tea, tap two fingers on the table. 3. Where’s #4? You will never see a hotel or building with a 4th floor. The number four is considered bad luck, as it has similar pronunciation to the word “death.” 4. Elevator etiquette: Only 24% of people admit to having passed gas in an elevator, but it’s more common in certain APAC countries according to a Hotels.com survey, which found that 28% of Chinese respondents admitted
to doing so on an elevator. 5. Yes or No? It is traditional to refuse something at least once, as it is a sign of politeness. So when someone offers you the last bite of fish, you’re expected to refuse once or twice to seem humbled by the offer.
6. Cheers! Toasts are made by holding a glass with two hands. 7. Close talkers: In China, personal space is minimal or nonexistent. Be prepared for some close proximity on trains, stores and elevators. 8. Punctuality: Timeliness
is synonymous with respect. Be on time or early for tours, hotel check-out and dinner reservations. To find last minute hotel deals in China, visit Hotels. com. Join in the conversation with #HotelExperts at @ hotelsdotcom.
“Elevator cars may ascend or descend on the outer surface of the elevator core structure or in a shaft on the interior of the elevator core structure.” The structure would be stabilized by gyroscopic and active control machinery. The company believes that it would be more efficient to launch spaceships from the stratosphere because of the decreased fuel consumption involved. The researchers propose using a platform on top of the space lift as a launching pad, which could cut the cost of space flight by around one third. “Astronauts would ascend to 12 miles by electrical elevator,” said the inventor, Dr. Brendan Quine. “From the top of the tower, space planes will launch in a single stage to orbit, returning to the top of the tower for refueling and reflight,” he added. The scientists also say the elevator could also be used
for scientific research, space tourism, communications, and wind-energy generation. “Landing at 12 miles above sea level will make space flight more like taking a passenger jet,” said Thoth Technology President and CEO, Caroline Roberts. Despite sounding like something out of science fiction, Thoth Technology’s concept is more realistic than previous ones. The idea of a space elevator was first proposed by Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in the late 20th century. The idea was to deliver payloads from the ground to outer space by using a huge cable with one end anchored to the Earth’s surface and the other fixed in a geostationary orbit. However, scientists say that a full-fledged space lift is unfeasible due to the lack of a material which could support itself at a height of 36,000 kilometers where geostationary satellites orbit.
Canadian company patents 20km lift to heavens
By Desert Star Staff A towering structure rising 20 kilometers into the air with its top in the sky may sound like something out of an Old Testament passage or science fiction novel, but a Canadian space company has proposed just that to cut the costs of space exploration.
Last month Thoth Technology was granted a United States patent for a “space elevator,” which would be more than 20 times taller than the 829-metre-high Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world. That is also beyond the so-called “Armstrong limit” – a point at an altitude of 19
kilometers where body fluids start to boil off due to low air pressure. “The space elevator tower has a segmented elevator core structure, each segment being formed of at least one pneumatically pressurized cell. The pressure cells may be filled with air or another gas,” the patent states.

“your wishes” will be in regard to passing along possessions, and also, making sure that your wishes regarding your healthcare at death are honored, are very important to put in writing. Is it that we are too busy enjoying life or too busy struggling in it, to take care of basic documents? Your rights and wishes in death will be honored by creating your plan. Here are the five crucial documents that estate planning professionals agree are needed for a successful plan. 1. Will: The fundamental estate planning document is a will, which establishes the individual responsible for administering the client’s estate, as well as the beneficiaries. Without this document in place when the client dies, state intestacy statutes will take effect and create an estate plan on behalf of the client, which may not be what the client had in mind .If no one under the statute can be found, the decedent’s
assets may end up going to the state. 2. Durable General Power of Attorney: A durable general power of attorney authorizes someone to act on behalf of the person who appointed them, in financial and personal business and tax affairs, in the event that the client is incapacitated and not able to make such decisions for him or herself. If the power of attorney is “durable,” it remains effective through the client’s subsequent incapacity. It ends at death of one. 3. Health Care Proxy: Another basic document that should be included in estate plans is a health care proxy. By executing this document, the client appoints a person to act as an agent for his or her medical decisions if a time comes when the client is unable to make such decisions. For example, “If the principal is under anesthesia and the doctor requires an immediate
decision as to treatment, an agent under a medical power of attorney may make such a decision,” It’s important the principal and agent discuss the principal’s wishes. 4. Living Will: Unlike the powers of attorney documents, a living will does not appoint a person to act on behalf of the client. Instead, a living will documents a client’s wishes about being kept alive “in case of a terminal condition or a persistent vegetative state,” In some states, the operative document is the living will while in others the courts will only enforce the health care proxy. In either case, it is common to have both prepared since the living will provides guidance to the health care agent on the patient’s wishes. 5. HIPAA Authorization: Generally, a medical power of attorney will include a provision, known as a HIPPA authorization, under the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act, granting an agent access to the client’s medical records. Without this specific authorization it is unlawful for a health care provider to disclose health-related information to a third party. Without these five basic estate planning documents, “things can become difficult and stressful.” These estate documents are easy and can be implemented for a very small fee.
Kelly: Commonly, an HOA board authorizes one or more persons to expend money in small increments (petty cash). It seems only logical that a board may also, if it chooses, delegate similar commitment/purchase authority for other types of expenditures with higher, specified cost limitations, for matters deemed urgent and important to the welfare and lifestyle of the community--for example, repairs to a pool heater. Petty cash is one of the few parts of the Davis-Stirling Act which do not defer to the association governing documents. It permits boards to increase regular assessments up to 20% in a year, regardless of any more restrictive language in the association governing documents. The idea behind this law is that association boards need flexibility to respond to variations in the association’s expenses. Most members will not commit to studying the HOA expenses and proposed budget (let alone attend board meetings), and that is why there is a board - to make the decisions so all the neighbors don’t have to. Uber Partners with AARP to Hire Senior Drivers
Uber and the AARP subsidiary Life Reimagined are partnering to attract more seniors to drive for Uber. Photo credit: Warren Goldswain/iStock
By Desert Star Staff YORBA LINDA, Calif. – Uber is partnering with “Life Reimagined, a subsidiary of AARP, to hire active seniors to become partner-drivers. Nationally, Uber said it needs to add hundreds of thousands of people to its workforce - so “LIfe Reimagined will offer workshops across California and information online to get people started. Adam Sohn, vice president for strategic initiatives at Life Reimagined, called the two organizations a natural fit since the ride-sharing app allows seniors to monetize one of their biggest assets - their vehicle. “We thought that would be a really positive opportunity for people in the Life Reimagined community to earn additional income, to be more selfempowered, he said, “and maybe starting their own
business by just taking their car out of their driveway. Uber said more than half of its current drivers are age 40 and older, and 24 percent are 50 or older. To qualify to drive for Uber, a driver needs insurance, a clean driving record and a car that is less than 10 years old. Sohn said studies show that older people are more careful on the road than are younger drivers, making them ideal candidates to drive for Uber. “Uber is also excited about the level of engagement from these more experienced drivers, he said. “and the level of safety that the passengers will enjoy. Part of the new agreement is that drivers who sign up for Uber through Life Reimagined get a $35 bonus after they complete 10 trips. Information is on either the Uber or Life Reimagined websites.
Connecting More Oregon Teens with Health Care
By Desert Star Staff MEDFORD, Ore. – One of Oregon’s state health priorities is getting more teens the regular preventive care that will help establish healthy habits in adulthood. But adolescents are busy, and some have to be convinced that it’s OK to talk with an adult about their concerns. As a group, teens may often seem carefree, but Dr. Matt Hough with Jackson Care Connect in Medford says there are plenty of big issues in their lives, from depression and anxiety, to drug and alcohol use and premarital sex. Hough says the doctor’s office should be a safe place to talk. “It’s really about figuring out where they are and how we can support them, he says. “Teens engage in risky behavior, no matter what parents think, and so it’s really an opportunity for
another adult to get in there and talk to them in a supportive way to kind of get them on the right track. A year ago, Jackson Care Connect started giving teenaged patients a questionnaire to fill out as a conversation-starter about tough issues. Hough says he’s been surprised and pleased at how many kids are candid about their concerns, and he notes teens also have rights in terms of doctors keeping their information confidential. At the Yamhill Community Care Organization in McMinnville, one approach that’s working to get kids into clinics is “Teen Swag Night – evening appointments in an “open house atmosphere, with games and giveaways provided by local merchants. Whether it’s an immunization or a sports physical, Dr. Jackie Eriksen says it’s a chance to

Badger-Two Medicine Makes “Too Wild” List
By Desert Star Staff BOZEMAN, Mont. – Oil and gas leases from decades past are tied to the history and future of Montana’s BadgerTwo Medicine region, which is adjacent to Glacier National Park. The history of the region and pending oil and gas projects are showcased in a new report from The Wilderness Society called Too Wild to Drill, which details risks to cultural history and wildlife if the development takes place. Blackfeet tribal member Leanne Falcon lives near the Badger-Two Medicine. She calls the conservation of the area key to cultural survival. “We need to protect the homeland as the Blackfeet and concerned locals have done for the past three decades, so that our children may have the same
spiritual and family experiences as our elders and ancestors,” she states. The Blackfeet tribe has offered other drilling sites on the reservation as an alternative, or leases could be voluntarily retired. A company based in Louisiana (Solenex) has filed a lawsuit demanding the right to drill. The report calls on the Interior Department to cancel the leases if they aren’t retired or traded, making the case the leases were granted without adequate review and tribal consultation. Bob Ekey, senior director for The Wilderness Society’s energy campaign in Bozeman, says the report also features success stories – and there are two big ones in Montana. The Rocky Mountain Front

Toxic Threat: Gold King One of Thousands of Abandoned
By Desert Star Staff FARMINGTON, N.M. – Thousands of abandoned mines in New Mexico, Colorado and other Western states pose as much of a toxic threat, or greater, as the Gold King Mine
in Colorado, which leaked three million gallons of toxic sludge and mine waste into the Animas River following an accidental discharge last week. Part of the larger Colorado River system, the Animas is a
tributary of the San Juan River, which flows into Lake Powell and mixes with Colorado River water. Farmington is among several downstream communities devastated by the spill. Mike Eisenfeld with the
San Juan Citizens Alliance says the Gold King Mine spill is just a sample of the threat posed by century-old abandoned mines. “There’s probably about 20,000 historic, abandoned mines in the Four Corners area,” he says. “Colorado alone has approximately 20,000 abandoned mines.” The EPA says its own crews accidentally caused the release of the contaminated water, containing dissolved metals, which turned the water of the Animas River – Farmington’s primary source for drinking water – yellow and orange. In Farmington and areas of southeastern Utah, a ban on water use from the affected waterways continues, marking a premature end to the summer tourism season. The spill is also forcing farmers and residents to haul water in for livestock and other uses. The
By Kristin J. Bender SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A short, sharp earthquake rattled the San Francisco Bay Area early Monday, but there were no reports of injuries or major damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-4.0 quake struck at 6:49 a.m. and was centered just north of Piedmont, near Berkeley. It was felt in downtown San Francisco, along the peninsula and in the East Bay. “This was a fairly small one but we should be prepared for them at all times,” USGS spokeswoman Leslie Gordon said. The shallow quake produced a sharp jolt followed by gentle rolls. People on social media reported broken clocks and plates. “Everyone’s outside to see if their homes were damaged,” Sean Lydon told the San Francisco
Chronicle after running out of his home following the shaking. Lydon, who lives just yards from the Hayward Fault and close to the epicenter of Monday’s temblor, reported minor plaster cracks at his home. Bay Area Rapid Transit held commuter trains for about five minutes and there were minor delays as crews checked the tracks. No damage was reported. The quake struck on the Hayward Fault at a depth of about 3.4 miles, according to the USGS. There are several hundred known faults in the state and others that are not known, said Lucy Jones, a seismologist with the USGS. About 200 are considered potentially hazardous. The Hayward fault runs from the cities of San Pablo Bay to Fremont and passes through
Berkeley, Oakland and Hayward. Monday’s quake came just one week before the one-year anniversary of the magnitude-6.0 earthquake that caused millions of dollars in damage and injured hundreds of people in California wine country.
The Napa quake was the largest temblor to hit the San Francisco Bay Area since the magnitude-6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 on the San Andreas Fault. The quake on Monday, along with the Napa and Loma Prieta
The Gold King Mine spill in Colorado turned the waters of the Animas River yellow and orange, prompting water emergencies downstream as far as Lake Powell. EPA says it’s still testing the sludge for toxicity levels, and is treating contaminated water in containment ponds. Despite the disaster, Eisenfeld says he’s hopeful the Gold King spill will motivate people and organizations to demand more government oversight, and greater accountability of energy extraction on or near public lands. He says modern mining is regulated through the General Mining Act of 1872. “It would be good for people to talk to their lawmakers and ensure that mining laws meet modern standards,” he says. “And that we have adequate bonding and adequate amounts of money to address what we know happens with abandoned mines when companies leave.” There are an estimated 500,000 abandoned mines throughout the United States.

AT&T played key role in helping NSA spy on UN
By Desert Star Staff Telecom giant AT&T Inc has played a bigger than previously thought role in helping the National Security Agency (NSA) spy on swathes of internet traffic, which included wiretapping all UN headquarters’ communications, The New York Times has revealed. The report is based on leaked documents, which date from 2003 to 2013 and were provided by whistleblower and former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. The files describe the NSA’s relationship with the telecommunications company as “highly collaborative,” citing AT&T’s “extreme willingness to help.” A decades-long partnership has helped the NSA to accomplish a whole range of classified activities, including providing technical assistance to carry out a secret court order that enabled wiretapping of all internet communications at the headquarters of the United Nations, which is an AT&T customer. AT&T also gave the spy agency access to billions of emails that landed in the domestic networks. The documents explain that the telecom giant was
able to deliver under various legal loopholes international and foreign-to-foreign internet communications even if they passed through networks located in the US. To show the extent of AT&T’s involvement, the files revealed that the company installed surveillance equipment in at least 17 of its major US internet hubs, thought to be a lot more than Verizon installed. AT&T’s engineers were also the first ones to get their hands on this new surveillance technologies created by the NSA, the newspaper reported. Further proving a unique relationship is the NSA’s topsecret budget from 2013, which doubled the funding of any other cooperation of similar size, according to the documents. “This is a partnership, not a contractual relationship,” one document said, warning NSA officials to be polite and professional. “[AT&T’s] corporate relationships provide unique accesses to other telecoms and ISPs [Internet service providers],” said another. In 2011 AT&T began to supply NSA with over 1.1 billion domestic cellphone calling records per day in 2011, which was “a push to get this flow
operational prior to the 10th anniversary of 9/11,” the Times reported. The company also gave access to foreign-to-foreign internet traffic, which was especially valuable to NSA. This was possible because a massive amount of the world’s network communications pass through US cables. AT&T spokesman Brad Burns told Reuters that the company does not “voluntarily provide information to any investigating authorities other than if a person’s life is in danger and time is of the essence. For example, in a kidnapping situation we could provide help tracking down called numbers to
assist law enforcement.” In June 2013, Snowden, a former NSA contractor, blew the whistle on the agency’s mass surveillance of Americans, handing over an archive of documents to journalist Glenn Greenwald and selected media organizations around the world. After the US government revoked his passport, he was stranded in a Moscow airport, reportedly on his way to Latin America. Snowden then applied for temporary asylum in Russia, where he has been living and working since. The US gover nment continues to pursue Snowden, insisting that he stole classified information, and betrayed
the nation, claiming that his “dangerous” decision had “severe consequences” for the security of the United States. Others, however, have hailed Snowden as a “hero” who has disclosed unconstitutional activities by the US government. The latest telephone survey by Morning Consult, which asked 2,000 Americans, showed 33 percent of respondents speaking out in support of a pardon for Snowden, 43 percent speaking out against such a move, and 24 percent abstaining. Meanwhile, 53 percent of those asked said they would support the government’s position on prosecuting the whistleblower.

Two people from China and one from the Philippines were among the dead, a police officer told Reuters. Many of those injured are from China and Taiwan. The explosion took place at Ratchaprasong intersection near Erawan shrine, a tourist attraction in the downtown Chidlom district. “I heard a boom. I thought it was thunder...but then on Twitter people were saying that something ominous had happened,” said a Periscope user who was streaming video live from the scene.
Body parts were scattered throughout the street following the blast, which went off at around 7 p.m. local time. “ T h e re w e re b o d i e s everywhere. Some were shredded. There were legs where heads were supposed to be. It was horrific,” Marko Cunningham, a New Zealand paramedic working with a Bangkok ambulance service, told Reuters. Previous reports put the death toll at 27, but national police chief Somyot Pumpanmuang told reporters that 16 people were killed. Photos showed fire and clouds of smoke, along with smashed car windows and August 19, 2015
debris littering the streets. Two more devices were found near the scene and detonated, the Bangkok Post reported. Police have also recovered an electronic circuit, suspected to be part of the original device, about 30 metres from the blast scene, according to the Bangkok Post. Nearby offices in the area, which is a busy business district, were reportedly evacuated, according to reports on social media. Erawan is a Hindu shrine which it is visited by thousands of people every day. Located on a main road, the shrine is surrounded by three major
shopping malls and is popular among both tourists and locals. No one claimed immediate responsibility for the attack, and such violence in the capital is a rarity. The Thai government is battling a low-level Muslim insurgency in the country’s predominantly Buddhist south, though rebels have rarely launched attacks outside their ethnic Malay heartland. Police said that attack was aimed at raising tension when the city was under martial law. The army has ruled Thailand since May 2014, when it ousted the elected government after months of anti-government protests. www.desertstarweekly.com
Season of Bold New Works
By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA—Desert Ensemble Theatre Company (DETC) today announced plans for its 5th Anniversary Season in 2015-16. Following its record-breaking 4th Season, which garnered 26 Desert Start Award nominations from the Desert Theatre League, DETC again will offer at least six performances of all productions with the exception of the Season Gala. All performances will take place in the Pearl McManus Theater at the Palm Springs Woman’s Club, 314 S. Cahuilla Road in Palm Springs. Founder and Producing Artistic Director Tony Padilla describes the thrust of the 201516 Season: “We have selected plays that share common themes
of contemporary life: people’s outsized need for attention; the disruptive effects such need can have on those around us; and the prices we pay individually and collectively in our quest for recognition.” The Season begins on October 16, 2015 with the 2nd Annual DETC Season Gala. Three of the Desert’s most accomplished musical theatre talents—Charles Herrera, Theresa Jewett and Jerome Elliott—perform Showstoppers!, a revue of some of the most c ro w d - p l e a s i n g m u s i c a l numbers from the Broadway stage. Elliott conceived and will direct this cabaret-style evening, proceeds from which support scholarships for Palm Springs High School students moving
on to college theater studies. Padilla, one of the Desert’s most prolific and renowned playwrights, directs a production of his newest work Look at Me. This dark comedy with a dose of poetic justice takes a look at how the speed of social media has affected family dynamics. It exposes the devaluing of personal privacy and its acceptance as fair game. Padilla won the Desert Theatre League’s 2014 Bill Groves Award for Outstanding Original Writing for his farce Becoming Ava. March 11-13 and 18-20, 2016. Artistic Director Rosemary Mallett directs a controversial new work that was dubbed “the best comedy of the season” by Charles Isherwood in The New York Times. Bad Jews by

The play is a fierce, biting comedy about family, faith and what you choose to believe, when you’re chosen. April 8-10 and April 15-17. A third production, slated for February 2016, will be announced this fall. DETC is currently in negotiations with an L.A.-based production company to import a critically acclaimed new play about an iconic movie star who had close ties to the Desert. By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, – Following its successful 2014-15 season of tribute shows, M2 Event Management, LLC has announced a new addition and a new venue for the 2015-2016 seasons. Beginning in January 2016, the event company will add a new nostalgic variety show, “A Really Big Shooo – An Ed Sullivan Variety Tribute Show” which will be presented at the Annenberg Theater. This fun tribute variety show is a comical nod to the manner in which Ed Sullivan, a native New Yorker, pronounced the word “show” as “shooo” and became a signature of his popular weekly television show. “A Really Big Shooo – An Ed Sullivan Variety Tribute Show” will feature celebrity impersonator, Bill Johnson, as “Ed Sullivan.” The show will also feature several professional tribute performers as “The Beatles,” “Diana Ross,” “Elvis Presley,” “Tina Turner,” and “The June Taylor Dancers.” In the tradition of The Ed Sullivan Show, this tribute show will also include his signature little mouse Topo Gigio as well as other variety magic, juggling and ventriloquist acts, in addition to former Palm Springs Follies cast members. “A Really Big Shooo” will be presented at the state-of-the-art www.desertstarweekly.com
Annenberg Theater, located at the Palm Springs Art Museum, at 7:30 p.m. on January 27, February 24, March 17, and April 13. Tickets are $59.00 and can be purchased at The Annenberg Box Office, and/or online starting September 15, 2015. Ed Sullivan, who was endearingly awkward as a show host, was renowned for his uncanny ability to spot talent. The Ed Sullivan Show, which aired from 1948 until 1971, was legendary for launching numerous careers. Some of the fledging talents The Ed Sullivan Show presented became some of the most successful talents in the world including The Beatles, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Elvis Presley, The Jackson 5, The Rolling Stones, and numerous other musicians, singers, and comedians. Many of these performers made their television debuts on The Ed Sullivan Show. “The Ed Sullivan Show was arguably one of the most influential early shows that changed the landscape of American television,” commented Melinda Marinoff, M2 Event Management producer. “I’m gratified that our Ed Sullivan tribute show, “A Really Big Shooo” has created such early enthusiasm. We’re proud to premiere this fun variety show in Palm Springs at the Annenberg
Theater,” Marinoff added. Ed Sullivan’s groundbreaking show was a live entertainment show with an audience as opposed to a taped show. Comedian Alan King once famously quipped, “Ed Sullivan can’t sing, can’t dance and can’t tell a joke, but he does it better than anyone else.” M2 Event Management will also present, Thanks for the Memories, the popular patriotic tribute show with a talented cast of tribute performers, for a second season in the Bob Hope Theatre of the Palm Springs Air Museum. Paintings come to life at Laguna Beach pageant
By Pamela Price As the sun sets in Laguna Beach the Pageant of the Masters takes to the stage, at the Irvine Bowl. The Pageant is romantic, nostalgic and for those who get that old feeling, so to speak, breathtaking. The finale has remained the same, a living portrait of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”… the original is on tempera on plaster, while the one at the Pageant features real people, positioned within an oversized frame, duplicating the original masterpiece. Under the magic of moonlight, this much-loved festival moves forward with an original theme. This year’s 90-minute moonlit Pageant reflects the history of art in a way that lingers in one’s memory. I was in the audience of the Pageant in 1962 (back then I sat on a wooden bench!) and have seen how it has grown into one of the world’s most successful art -inspired events, now featuring a narrator, an orchestra and period songs by vocalists. The result is a stunning outdoor pageant choreographed with singular precision. The Pageant has a fascinating history that actually began in 1932 and remains in the hearts and mind of countless fans a marvel of theatrical illusion and artistry. This year’s theme is “The Pursuit of Happiness” and there are nightly performances now through August 31, every night at 8:30 PM. The official program can be purchased for $10 and is work of art in itself, with a painting of Fragonard’s Lady on the Swing on the cover. The Pageant has two acts, opening this year with “Happiness - A Primer” with two tableaus of artist Winslow Homer’s oil paintings, The Country School and Snap the Whip.. While the first act focuses on American history from a popular political perspective, inspired by “The Pursuit of Happiness” and the words of Thomas Jefferson. Act Two took a geographical turn with three Japanese woodblock prints sweeping across the date. Then it was on to the French Roccoco era and iconic painting, “The Swing” by J.H. Fragonard, Does it look familiar? This is the same oil painting you see cleverly reproduced on every ticket. The Pageant relies heavily on local participation, with nearly 500 people involved in areas from the wardrobe, and headpiece volunteers to volunteer cast members. Timmy Woods, a Los Angeles based fashion designer, has two grandchildren in the cast during Act One. “This has been an extraordinary experience for my grandchildren as they take their roles seriously,” Woods says, “and they are also learning valuable lessons www.desertstarweekly.com
in art history since Alexis, my granddaughter goes through the entire makeup process being transformed to a young girl in the nineteenth century. By being part of the scene of Changing Homes, an oil painting by George E. Hicks, she experiences a real sense of history through art.” Throughout the Pageant, a Fine Arts Show is open daily from 10am to 11:30 pm. This highly acclaimed juried fine art show features 140 award winning artists and takes place on the Festival grounds at 650 Laguna Canyon Road, in Laguna Beach. The cost of admission is covered as part of your ticket. Plan to spend the whole day by arriving early and having dinner at Tivoli Terrace, an American classic for the last 40 years, next to the theatre. Lunch is served every day from 11am-3 pm and dinner from 4pm-9 pm. Their early bird, served once a day from 4 pm to 5 pm is a bargain, with all four specialties, including fresh salmon with lemon dill sauce priced at $16.95. Their traditional desserts such the Viennese Spiced Carrot Cake “consistently fantastic”) are unique to this charming restaurant that evokes memories of a more relaxed era in Southern California dining (call 949-494-9650 for reservations). A short walk away is the 49th Annual Sawdust Art & Craft Festival, with roots in the 1960s right down to live folk music (remember that song, “Where Have all the Flowers Gone?”). This is a time capsule of art, music and nostalgia with everything from decorative hardware fashioned by hand, well-known as Weir originals ( W e i r ’s exhibit of numbered door knockers and door stops is a trip to the last century) to personalized thank-you cards, instantly printed in myriad colors. There is still time to plan your Laguna getaway, with the Pageant in progress until August 31st. Tickets are still available from LagunaFestivalofArts. org Pam Price is a Forbes.com contributor

Make the Most of the End of Summer
By Desert Star Staff The clock is ticking on the sunniest season. With the end of summer drawing near, considering switching things up to help you make the most of every day. Be Your Own Bartender: That new neighborhood hot spot where everyone knows your name? Your patio. Try experimenting with frosty, whole-fruit drinks recipes like margaritas and adult smoothies, but watch the sugar if the party gets too steamy. “During a season with high temperatures, you want to stick with bright, refreshing flavors,” says Tom Macy, bartender and co-owner of Clover Club. “Stay away from stronger, spirit-forward cocktails and go for drinks with fresh-squeezed juice and crisp, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Something that will help you cool down without getting you in over your head.” Macy suggests trying out one of his newest creations -- the Jalapeño Cucumber Margarita, which includes; jalapeño tequila, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, ice, freshly
cut cucumber slices with the optional addition of cilantro. For the full recipe, visit TomMacy. com. Redefine Your Vacation Beard: For the gentleman, along with the summer getaway comes the vacation beard. Understandable, as who wants to shave when there are sights to be seen and adventures to be had? It’s easy to come back to civilization with a beard looking a little weary instead of worldly. That’s no problem -- these furry celebrations of off-theclock leisure can become your canvas. “Going on, or returning from vacation is the perfect time to switch up your look,” says Christopher Hunt, Editor-atLarge at AskMen. “If you let your facial hair run wild while you had a few days off -- all the better -- now you have something to play with. Shape it into a sharp goatee or trim it down into a classic, timeless scruffy look. Or shave it all off and start over. You can head into work feeling fresh.” Hunt suggests trying out the new BIC Flex 5 Razor
because it has a “Balancing Sphere” that gives better shave control. Its precision edging blade is useful in difficult spots, such as under the nose and around the sideburns. “It’s all about creating a definition for whatever unique facial hair style you choose, with the right tool for the job,” he says. Make Workouts Fun:
Think of the days when you wanted to stay outside all day, running around and playing games. Why not combine friendly competition with your workouts? Find a park and invite friends or coworkers for an oldfashioned game of “capture the flag.” It’s a fun way to increase heart rates.
Once you’re done, invite your thirsty crew home to check out your bartending skills. For more lifestyle tips from Macy and Hunt, visit www. BicFlexRazors.com. Don’t let the end of summer pass you by. With fall almost here, end your summer with new traditions.. StatePoint

making it a bit difficult for the viewer to figure out just where the story is going. If you saw the first film things would be easier to follow, but eventually all the pieces fall into place. Also in part two, Patel and his sweetheart are planning their wedding, but her brother’s good friend gets in the way. He is rich, handsome, calm and a better dancer so Patel becomes truly jealous and somewhat unhinged. The film, from Fox Searchlight, is rated PG, and while pleasant and light-hearted, overall, it is not as enjoyable as the original. On the plus side, there is a big Bollywood dance finale.

The title is a clue. “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” a sequel, is enjoyable, but does not have the same dynamism and charisma as the first film. In the original, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,“ a group of British pensioners come to India to start a new life. The hotel sounded exotic in the online ad, and the price was right. But when they arrive at their destination, things are not what they expected. Dev Patel, the young hotel owner with a big dream but very little expertise, convinces them to stay, despite the chaos and unfamiliar conditions and locale. How each of the Brits adapts to their new adventure was charming and at times quite touching and emotional. In the sequel, they are still there, for the most part, and Patel is planning to open yet another hotel for senior citizens. While some of the characters are missing, Dev Patel is still the brash and often bumbling young

hotel owner and Maggie Smith is now his assistant manager, thanks to her business skill and common sense. The story begins in Los Angeles this time. Dev and Maggie have come to the U.S. seeking financial aid so that they can open yet another Marigold Hotel in India. As always, Maggie is feisty and for the most part, fun. She is also the brains of the operation, although Patel feels he has a great sense of intuition on how things should be handled. A prime example of this is his certainty that the newest guest, Richard Gere, has been sent from the home office to check on him and the potential of yet another Exotic Marigold Hotel. But is he right? Dame Judi Dench and Bill Nighy are now a duo, sort of, but they have not actually made a commitment, even though it is obvious they care deeply about one another. In Ol Parker’s screenplay, the story introduces quite a few plot lines all at once,
“Danny Collins,” written and directed by Dan Fogelman, stars Al Pacino as a pop-rock singer. It begins with Pacino, as Danny, actually singing in concert. His style is a lot like Neil Diamond, and his opening song sounds a bit like “Sweet Caroline.” The crowd obviously loves him as he performs all of his old hits. He seems satisfied with the status quo, but things change at his surprise birthday party thrown by his sex-kitten bimbo gal pal. That night his best friend and business manager, Christopher Plummer, presents him with a very special gift—a letter written to him in 1971 by none other than John Lennon and Yoko. Sadly, or was it destiny, the letter was never presented to him until now. Lennon praises him and indicates that he would love to help him write his own songs. The idea strikes a cord in the star who decides to make some major life changes. One being, go to New Jersey and look up the son he has never met, played by Bobby Cannavalle. When he arrives at his son’s home in his sexy red Mercedes, he discovers he also has a very special daughter-in-law (Jennifer Garner) and an absolutely adorable, but hyper active, six-year-old grand daughter (Giselle Eisenberg). The blonde, bouncy tyke takes to him right away, but it’s a different story when he meets his longlost son who wants no part of

His plan, to write his own music once again. But will old fans take to something new? Pacino can turn on the charm, although he still drinks too much, He is determined to quit using drugs at this point because he wants to turn his life around and reclaim his long-lost family. Another goal is to convince the hotel manager (Annette Benning) to have dinner with him. He likes the fact that she has spunk, is more age appropriate and is fun to talk to She is also hard to get,

and that is a welcome change... In a disclaimer at the start of the film, it states, “This story is kind of based on a true story—a little bit.” little bit.” And the kind of true part has to do with an actual letter John Lennon wrote in 1971. This time Pacino is not a Mafia Don or a Serpico cop, he is a loveable, but very flawed man

MUSIC Wide range of styles shine on new releases BY ROBERT KINSLER
New releases enhance the legacy of The Stray Cats and the Vince Guaraldi Trio, while Irish troupe Pugwash will surely win a growing American following thanks to a new masterwork.
Artist: Pugwash Title: Play This Intimately (as if among friends) (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: ELO, XTC, The Beatles Tell me more: Memorable and wide-ranging songcraft, incredible vocal harmonies, top-tier musicianship and artful arrangements only begin to illustrate what makes Dublinbased Pugwash so amazing. The talented quintet’s new studio album “Play This Intimately (as if among friends)” (set for release via Omnivore Recordings on
Sept. 4) has plenty of far-flung material showcasing everything from power pop (“Kicking and Screaming,” “Hung Myself Out to Dry”) and sunshine pop (“Clouds”) to neo-psychedelia (“The Fool I Had Become,” “We Are Everywhere”) and baroque pop (“Feed His Heart With Coal,” “Lucky in Every Way”). It doesn’t hurt that high-profile guests who show up along the album’s fantastic 12-track run include Jeff Lynne (ELO), Ray Davies (The Kinks) and Andy Partridge (XTC). Information: omnivorerecordings. com. Artist: The Stray Cats Title: Live At Rockpalast (MIG-Music) You might like if you enjoy: The Stray Cats, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly
Tell me more: Time has been especially kind to The Stray Cats’ authentic neo-rockabilly sound. The outstanding “Live At Rockpalast” (available on DVD and audio CD) features the trio’s timeless sound via a full-length concert staged in July 1981, and even stronger appearance captured in August 1983. While the uptempo rockabilly material (notably “Double Talkin’ Baby,” “Rock This Town” and “Rumble In Brighton,” all featured at both performances) comprises the majority of songs, the lovely “Lonely Summer Nights” and playful “Stray Cat Strut” display Brian Setzer’s potent vocals while “Drink That Bottle Down” is a strong bona fide blues tune featuring Lee Rocker on lead vocals. Dave Edmunds guests during the first encore of the
1983 show, tearing up on lead guitar and singing the George Jones country classic “The Race Is On” and a version of the 1956 rockabilly classic “Tear It Up.” Information: mig-music-shop. com.
Artist: Vince Guaraldi Trio Title: Peanuts Greatest Hits (Fantasy Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Vince Guaraldi Trio, Woody Herman Tell me more: While Charles M. Schulz created the world of “Peanuts” with his timeless comic strip, there is no doubt that pianist-composer Vince Guaraldi provided a musical voice to Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy and a cast of other animated characters with his jazzy sound blending his own piano with
stand-up bass and drums. On the newly-released “Peanuts Greatest Hits,” the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s most beloved works are collected on a 12-track set that includes the iconic “Linus and Lucy” along with choice selections from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” TV special and the “A Boy Named Charlie Brown” feature film. While much of the music will be familiar to many, the sophisticated “Little Birdie” features a rare vocal track from Guaraldi in an arrangement further enhanced by a full horn section. The collection includes outstanding liner notes by Derrick Bang adding a wealth of information about Guaraldi and the other musicians featured on the various tracks. Bible Museum to display artifacts from Holy Land By Brett Zongker WASHINGTON (AP) - The Museum of the Bible being built in Washington will feature ancient artifacts and treasures from the Holy Land under a new deal that ensures Israel’s leading archaeological organization will have an outpost in the U.S. capital. An agreement between the museum and the Israel Antiquities Authority announced Tuesday will bring a selection of artifacts excavated in Israel for long-term display in a top-floor gallery at the new Bible museum. The $400 million, eight-story museum is set to open near the National Mall in 2017. The specific artifacts to be displayed in Washington haven’t been settled, officials said, though they will be related to the Bible. Plans call for both a permanent exhibition and rotating special exhibits. In 1993,
the Israel Antiquities Authority exhibited the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Library of Congress in Washington. Researchers and curators from the Israeli authority will write the exhibition text based on their research from numerous excavations in the field, and the museum will design the exhibit, said Jacob Fisch, the executive director of the New York-based Friends of the Israel Antiquities Authority. “We share one mission, and that’s telling the story that is based on the archaeological material,” Fisch said of the museum partnership. “We’re very scientifically based, research based.” While the Israeli group has a long-term loan arrangement with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to display about 30 objects, the Bible museum exhibit will include hundreds or
even thousands of objects from Israel’s 2 million artifacts. “We have a lot of exhibits that travel around the world. We have a long-term exhibit at the Met,” he said. “But we don’t have our own gallery in which we can keep material for a whole number of years on a long-term loan basis.” The Museum of the Bible already holds a collection of about 40,000 objects from its founder, Hobby Lobby President Steve Green. The Green Collection includes rare biblical texts and artifacts, such as cuneiform tablets dating to the time of Abraham, Torah scrolls and rare printed Bibles. “When we set out to build the best new museum in the world, we knew the museum would be even better if we joined forces with some of the greatest collections anywhere,” said Museum President Cary

conservative and evangelical causes. He provided seed money to begin building the $400 million Bible museum. Organizers have said they will present stories from different religious viewpoints that visitors can choose from. Source: KMIR/AP

Don’t get burned by Jury Fraud this summer
ByDesert Star Staff CONCORD, N.H. – Few people want their summer interrupted by a notice to report for jury duty, but it gets even worse when that notice is a fake designed to steal your identity and money. Retired FBI agent Bob Denz is a volunteer fraud-fighter with AARP New Hampshire. He says it’s not unusual for old scams to come back to life, and says the jury duty scam has resurfaced in New Hampshire with bogus phone calls and emails. “Right across the state, you frighten people and particularly older people,” he says. “Someone calls up to say you’re having an arrest warrant for you, or you didn’t come to jury duty, they’re not going to hang up, they’re going to listen and they’re frightened and they’ll probably do anything.”
Denz says the best way to steer clear of the scam is to not share any personal information over the phone or by email. He adds while the scam is more than a decade old, it is still netting around $350 million a year. Denz says the calls tend to vary. Some try to get you to part with sensitive identity information and others with cash. “Another technique is to tell the victim to pay a fine, before the so-called arrest warrant is signed,” he explains. “Pay over the phone, such as loading money onto a prepaid debit card or Paypal.” If you have received a phone call or email claiming you missed Consumer watchdogs warn that the jury duty scam has resurfaced in New Hampshire as a means of stealing identities and jury duty, Denz says you should money. Metal Thieves Threaten Safety By Julie Buehler According to research, twothirds of athletes arrive at their respective practices dehydrated and when combating heatrelated illness, hydration is a key component. So for Coachella Valley coaches and administrators, keeping their athletes hydrated and safe as the temperatures reach record highs is a constant challenge through the desert summers.

CIF, the governing body of California high school athletics, sets rules for when teams can wear pads and helmets through summer conditioning, and while that is standard in Northern California as well as in the south, those rules are especially important in the valley where players where about 20 pounds of equipment in 110-plus degree temperatures. And it’s not just football
players that need to be cautious. Water polo programs generally practice in the early morning hours to avoid the blazing sun and, yes, dehydration. Xavier Prep’s coach said he ensure his players take regular breaks out of the water, to refill their bodies’ fluids. For more information on how to stay safe in the heat and avoid heat related illness, visit the CIF Website. Source KMIR August 19, 2015
By Kitty Alvarado CATHEDRAL CITY, Ca. Over the weekend metal thieves struck in Cathedral City. They targeted fire hydrants. Robert Keeran with the Coachella Valley Water District says thieves stole 18 caps off of fire hydrants. This crime is happening more often, according to the CVWD in 2013 metal theft cost them $110,000 and fire hydrant caps are not cheap to replace. “It’s going to cost the water district nearly $190 a hydrant to
go out and replace the caps that have been stolen,” said Keeran. But the monetary loss is the least of CVWD’s concern. “This is fire season, we are in a drought this year these are some of the highest fire warning levels that California has ever seen. We need our fire protection in place, we need the water there, we need these hydrants ready for the departments to use and not to be messed with,” said Keeran. Source KMIR www.desertstarweekly.com
