“Topping Out” Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Stadium 1. Roger Federer is playing a match in the 2008 Pacific Life Open. (Photo courtesy of Wikipedia)
At Indian Wells Tennis Garden By Jackie Devereaux INDIAN WELLS – The Indian Wells Tennis Garden (IWTG) held a milestone event for the construction of Stadium 2 on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Construction workers, IWTG staffers, members of the design and engineering teams, Watkins Landmark employees and other dignitaries attended the “topping out” ceremony presented by Watkins Landmark Construction, where the final structural beam
was placed at the top of the new Stadium 2. “This is a special occasion, a milestone in the construction of Stadium 2,” said Owner Larry Ellison at the event. A tradition in construction is the “topping out” ceremony where the last structural beam is signed by workers before being placed into the structure. The IWTG was first constructed in March 2000 at a cost of $77 million with provisions
to build out Stadium 2 later. Ellison’s passion for the sport of tennis is the reason why the site hosts the largest ATP world tour and WTA combined event in the world. “This building is not just a skyscraper that you construct and leave and go on to your next job. This building will be seen in the years to come by millions and millions of people worldwide,” Ellison said. The “topping out” ceremony not only recognizes a milestone in construction of the structure, it also marks a major step
in the completion of other improvements before the 2014 BNP Paribas Open. The $11 million expansion of the new Stadium 2 was designed by Rossetti Associates Architects and construction is expected to be completed well before the Mar. 3-16, 2014 BNP Paribas Open. ITWG also hosts the junior and adult United States Tennis Association (USTA) events year round. In addition to these large events, during the week members are able to use the courts for recreational play. The
tennis garden sets up matches for individuals who want to play. Also, they have clinics and there are pros available for a fee. As well as tennis, the IWTG has hosted musical concerts by The Eagles, The Who, Tom Petty, Andrea Bocelli and RBD. The venue also hosted three preseason NBA exhibition games with the Phoenix Suns. For more information about IWTG call 760-200-8200 or go to www.iwtg.net.
Locals Indicted Local Men Charged in Vanderbilt Rape Case
Vanderbilt University football player Brandon Vandenburg of Indio
By Jackie Devereaux PALM DESERT - The attorney for one of the men charged with allegedly tampering with evidence in a Vanderbilt rape case said his client, Joseph Dominick Quinzio, 20, of Palm Desert, received a video of the alleged rape through his phone as a text message. Criminal Defense Attorney Brett Greenfield with the Los Angeles law firm of Kenner and Greenfield admitted that his client, Quinzio, “saw the video
and became very disturbed.” Quinzio, along with Miles Finley, 19, of Bermuda Dunes are friends of Brandon Vandenburg, 20, of Indio. The three young men played football together at Xavier College Preparatory High School in Palm Desert. Vandenburg was arrested for five counts of rape and two counts of sexual battery against an unconscious 21-year-old female Vanderbilt student. Vandenburg is also charged with videotaping the female victim
and passing on those videos to others. The alleged rape and video tapping took place on June 23 in Tennessee. Greenfield said the video was sent to his client. Quinzio and Finley both are charged with tampering with electronic evidence and scheduled to appear in separate courtrooms on Tuesday, Aug. 20 for extradition hearings. “He’s (Quinzio) being Continues on Page 3
Have You Seen This Man? German son seeks reunion with father
By Jackie Devereaux Emin Bernd Alihodic was born on July 21, 1951 in Siegen, Germany and immigrated to the United States sometime in the late 1980s. Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a newspaper article describing how his dad was rescued twice off Mount San Jacinto on Feb.
9, 2009 and then again on May 13, 2010. Jens, who speaks little or no English, was adopted by his step-father at the age of 10 and only knows a little about his biological father from stories his mother told him through the years. “I’d like to know more about him. How’s he been living all these years,” the younger Alihodic said through a German/ English interpreter.

Jens said he started looking for his father about a year and a half ago after meeting the love of his life, Karin Huebers. He and Karin want to start their own family soon and through her urging, they traveled to Palm Springs to search for his biological father. “I didn’t have the ambition before, but now I’m curious about my real dad. I’d like to at least meet him and talk a little. I’d ask him what he’s been doing for the past 30 years,” he said. Jens said he found a second wife, Karen Schleich, living in San Francisco who also would like to reconnect with Emin and
hopes the younger son finds success in the Coachella Valley. Jens and Karin went to the last known addresses searching and learned he was seen as recently as last March. “So the good news is that he is still alive and still in the area somewhere,” he said. Jens and Karin only have two weeks to locate Emin and will be returning to Germany on Friday, Aug. 23. If Emin reads this story and would like to reconnect with his grown son, he should email jensluschnat78@gmail.com.

Greenfield said his client was so disturbed by the video, that he went to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department on Friday, Aug. 16 and reported everything he knew. “Doing the right thing was what prompted him to go to the sheriff,” Greenfield said, knowing an investigation was going on. Greenfield said only when Quinzio showed up to talk to investigators did he find out that there was a warrant for his arrest in Tennessee. “He (Quinzio) was simply sent a text message, unwanted, unsolicited, out of the blue, put in a terrible situation by someone who he thought was a friend,” Greenfield said. By Theda Kleinhans Reichman If you loved Jack Bauer and “24” on TV, chances are you will also love the action packed thriller “Olympus Has Fallen.” Scottish actor Gerard Butler stars as Mike Banning, a former presidential guard who was removed from service following a tragic accident he was unable to prevent. Now, many months later, after terrorists have invaded the White House (Secret Service code: “Olympus”), Banning manages to get back into the presidential mansion in order to find and save the president’s son. The commander in chief (Aaron Eckhart) has been taken to an underground bunker by the secret service to keep him out of harm’s way, but his young
son has gone into hiding and no one knows what has happened to him. Banning had a special bond with the youngster and during his service in the White House he showed the boy every secret hiding place, escape route and hidden tunnel. What began as a game long ago may save the boy’s life during this terrible crisis. As Banning frantically searches for the boy, so do the terrorists. Just as in “24,” the president is in jeopardy and like Jack Bauer, Banning is determined to save the president and his staff, or die trying. The special effects are amazing as the White House is blown up room by room. While
things look bleak within the White House itself, things are also dangerous in the secret bunker. The fine cast, headed by Butler and Eckhart, also includes Morgan Freeman as Speaker of the House, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, Ashley Judd and Rick Yune. It is refreshing to have the president and his staff act heroically throughout as they fight to keep secret codes out of the hands of the invading terrorists, codes that could lead to the annihilation of the United States and her allies. This time an action flick doesn’t put down the power structure, it lauds their courage in the face of tremendous danger. Terrorists have stormed

Eureka! takes pride in serving all American craft beer and spirits because these small and locally owned artisans create a premium, innovative product that is sought after by those who appreciate the best. The Indian Wells restaurant will feature 30 craft beers on tap and 15 will be dedicated to local breweries featuring their latest release. The restaurant will also serve two wines on tap – one red and one white. The cocktail program at Eureka! features all natural liqueurs, artisan bitters and fresh cut fruit completely free of artificial flavorings and high fructose corn syrup. The drink menu also features 21 small batch American whiskeys – sourced from artisans in California, Iowa, Kentucky, New York, Oregon, Texas and Utah – in tribute of the 21st amendment outlawing prohibition. Off the menu, guests will find hard-to-get and strictly allocated whiskeys like Pappy Van Winkle and offerings from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection available to the most discerning whiskey drinkers. Saying Goodbye is Always Hard to Do
By Jackie Devereaux I first want to say “Thank you” to our founding fathers for having the vision to give us the First Amendment, a right granted by the United States Constitution which allows for the Freedom of the Press. This right allows me, a member of the media, to gather, publish and distribute information and ideas without government restriction or censorship. The First Amendment says in part that, “Congress shall make no law…abridging the Freedom of Speech, or of the press.” The federal courts have long struggled to determine whether the framers of the Constitution intended to differentiate press freedom from speech freedom.
That intellectual and esoteric argument carries on to this day. While other intellectuals argue that point, I have concluded that the freedom of the press derives from the freedom of speech. Although some legal cases and scholars, including Justice Potter Stewart of the U.S. Supreme Court, have advocated special press protections distinct from those accorded to speech, most justices believe that the Freedom of the Press Clause has no significant independence from the Freedom of Speech Clause. Therefore, all speech is protected under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and I have the right to express myself
freely in public without fear of government persecution. It has been my job as the Co-Founder and Editorin-Chief of this newspaper to write and edit to the style of journalism created and mandated by The Associated Press (AP). My editorials over the past year have been mostly based on social issues that are relevant to the Coachella Valley. There were a few deeply personal editorials, like the one about my father for our father’s day edition. One Reader called and said it made him cry. Wow, I thought, and reread it, then cried myself. However, for the most part, my editorials have been directed to you, my Reader. My editorials did not
reflect the views of the Desert Star Weekly’s ownership, management or staff, but were exclusively my own personal views. I like to write about two of my favorite topics - same sex marriage and immigration reform. I received a number of calls and emails about the “Let’s Make Our Own Marilyn” editorial and for the one about New York Yankee Third Baseman Alex Rodriguez’s alleged use of performance enhancing drugs. I realize that since the beginning of recorded human history, “influence” has been created by the written word. Ever since the first cave drawings and ancient hieroglyphics, mankind has exerted his influence on one another in some form through the written word or images. I believe I have “influenced” people in the Coachella Valley with my editorials and feature stories. I have been told that I helped get a new congressman elected last year with my editorials about Mary Bono Mack and Dr. Raul Ruiz. I also was told my editorials increased voter turnout. Whether or not these claims are true or simply puffery on the part of some readers is for you to decide. I am happy to have had this opportunity, so it comes with some sadness but also with great expectations that I leave my position to pursue other business opportunities. I will remain at the Editor’s desk until my replacement is found because I won’t leave

By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS – The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a historic ruling on Wednesday, Jun. 26 to grant same sex marriages across the nation. In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional. Within minutes of the landmark ruling, local hoteliers and wedding planners scrambled to promote Palm Springs as a premiere wedding destination. “The Supreme Court’s
historic action today overturning DOMA and dismissing the appeal of California’s Proposition 8, clearing the way for same-sex marriage in our state is a huge victory for the LGBT community. This is about equal rights and I am gratified that the court has recognized that we are all the same,” said Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet. “My husband Christopher and I look forward to same-sex weddings commencing again in the state of California – and rest assured the City of Palm Springs will continue to be a destination committed to celebrating the
institution of marriage, both heterosexual and same-sex,” Pougnet said in a prepared statement “Riverside County is prepared to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and record their marriages immediately after the anticipated direction is received from the state and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Local Men Charged in Vanderbilt Rape Case By Jackie Devereaux PALM DESERT - The attorney for one of the men charged with allegedly tampering with evidence in a Vanderbilt rape case said his client, Joseph Dominick Quinzio, 20, of Palm Desert, received a video of the alleged rape through his phone as a text message.
“He’s (Quinzio) being accused of somehow tampering with or destroying evidence, and

German son seeks reunion with father By Jackie Devereaux Emin Bernd Alihodic was born on July 21, 1951 in Siegen, Germany and immigrated to the United States sometime in the late 1980s. Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a
newspaper article describing how his dad was rescued twice off Mount San Jacinto on Feb. 9, 2009 and then again on May 13, 2010. Jens, who speaks little or no English, was adopted by his stepfather at the age of 10 and only knows a little about his biological father from stories his mother told him through the years. “I’d like to know more
about him. How’s he been living all these years,” the younger Alihodic said through a German/ English interpreter. nothing could be further than the truth,” Greenfield said. Nashville, Tennessee Metro police traveled to California in July to interview both Quinzio and Finley about their involvement with the cover up. Greenfield said only when
Quinzio showed up to talk to investigators did he find out that there was a warrant for his arrest in Tennessee. “He (Quinzio) was simply sent a text message, unwanted, unsolicited, out of the blue, put in a terrible situation by someone who he thought was a friend,” Greenfield said. Quinzio is being held without bail at the Southwest Detention Center. Finley is being held at the Larson Justice Center in Indio without bail and is also expected to appear in court Tuesday.
