Jerry Lewis, dies at 91 By Desert Star Staff US comedy legend, Jerry Lewis, renowned for his stage partnership with Dean Martin, starring in the ‘Nutty Professor’ and hosting the Labor Day telethon, has died in Las Vegas at the age of 91. “Legendary entertainer Jerry Lewis passed away peacefully today of natural

causes at 91 at his home with family by his side,” his loved ones said in a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Lewis died at 9:15am Sunday, his agent confirmed, according to Variety and other media. He is survived by his second wife SanDee Pitnick and their adopted daughter. Throughout his life, Lewis

endured several serious health issues, which included openheart surgery in 1983 and being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1992. He survived a heart attack in 2006. The screen legend also suffered from chronic lung disease. Apart from the Martin and Lewis sketches, Jerry Lewis was propelled to fame through

the films ‘The Bellboy’ (1960) and ‘The Nutty Professor’ (1963), making him Hollywood’s highest paid actor at the time. Lewis starred in a total of 50 movies and a number television shows, earning two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame – one for cinema and the other for TV. One of Lewis’ most

commendable efforts was his annual Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) telethon, which he created and hosted from 1966 until 2010. During those years, the initiative raised some $2.45 billion dollars for MDA, and even got Lewis nominated for the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize.

Nina Rao Performs at Bhakit Fest 2017

Headlining with Krishna Das By Jackie Devereaux Joshua Tree, CA – The 9th annual Bhakti Fest returns to the high desert at the Institute of Mentalphysics from Sept. 7-12 for six days of continuous Kirtan music, yoga and meditation where thousands of festival-goers search for spirituality and personal growth. One of the musical headliners, Nina Rao, will perform at the predominately Hindu and Vedic-themed fall festival in a number time slots, and alongside with 2013 Grammy-nominated headliner Krishna Das. Rao was born in Queens, New York but don’t let that

all-American fact fool you. Both of her parents were from Bangalore, India, and she learned the sacred Kirtan chants from her grandfather as a child, singing them in the traditional Indian way. Rao didn’t come to the music industry straight-away. She took a long detour working first in banking on the New York Stock Exchange trading floor in the 1980s. She left banking and started practicing yoga in the 1990s, which led her to meeting Krishna Das who led the chanting at a 1996 yoga retreat Continues on Page 12

By Desert Star Staff STERLING, Ill., Aug. 22, 2017 -- Sissy came to her rescue so badly matted it was difficult to tell she was a dog. Her ears were matted to the side of her head, her chin was matted to her chest and her four paws were the size of boxing gloves. After a full eight hours of grooming, her true beauty was revealed and she was quickly adopted. Sissy’s dramatic transformation not only got her a second chance at life, but the title of America’s top shelter dog makeover in the 2017 Dirty Dogs Contest. The annual effort from pet industry leaders Wahl and GreaterGood. org demonstrates the power of

grooming, and awards the top three dog makeovers with grant money for their local shelters. “Without proper grooming, shelter dogs are often perceived to be ‘damaged goods’ and overlooked by adoptive families,” says Shay Moeller, pet product manager for Wahl. “However, by providing shelters with much-needed grooming supplies, we can help in their efforts to transform these dogs into the healthy, fun loving pets they really are. The end goal is for all dogs to find a forever family, just like Sissy did.” The story about “Sissy” Sissy is 12 years old and a Lhasa Apso so badly matted it was difficult to tell

that she was a dog. She was one of five Lhasa’s that came to Suncoast Animal League in horrible condition. The five dogs came into Suncoasts Animal League’s possession at 12:30 am on February 23, 2017. I made the hour drive and arrived at 1:30 am at Island Dog Outfitters to begin grooming the dogs. The drive was not a pleasant one given the horrendous odor associated with the dogs. When it came time to start the grooming process on Sissy, it was difficult to figure out where to start. Her ears where matted to the side of her head. Her chin was matted to her chest and her face was so matted

that her muzzle no longer fit into a bowl. Feces hung like dreadlocks to her backside and her four paws were the size of boxing gloves. Her nails barely protruded through the matting and later on, we found them to be over four inches long. The matting over her eyes prevented her from seeing and we would later find out that the matting caused permanent damage to her eyes. Her teeth were wrapped with matted hair. Her body was entombed within the matted hair. The grooming that began at 1:30 am and ended at 9:30 am, with all five dogs, who would come to be known as the Fab Five, being groomed. That same day, all five dogs

were seen and examined by a veterinarian. It would begin a medical odyssey that would cost over $7,000 and end on April 2nd with Sissy and the other four Fab Five members, getting adopted at a “Lunch with the Lhasa’s”event. In between, the Fab Five became FaceBook phenoms. Sissy is thriving in her new home and is getting the individual attention she so richly deserves. It goes without saying that Sissy would not have been adopted without being groomed but the truth of the matter is, she wouldn’t have survived without being groomed. Grooming freed her from her own body and provided her with a new life.

It’s My Balcony And My Vine, Right? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hello Mr. Richardson, I own a two bedroom condo with a balcony. We live in the area where a lot of smoke from a busy boulevard, so the balcony needs to be washed often. We put tile on the balcony. Now the HOA is painting the balconies and will remove tile. Do we have any rights to fight not to remove tile? I would really appreciate your response. Sincerely, L.M., San Francisco Dear L.M.:

Your balcony is most likely exclusive use common area (if the governing documents do not say so, Civil Code 4145(b) does), but it is still common area under HOA authority. Adding tile is modifying the common area. The tile, depending on how it was installed and what is underneath, could cause longterm damage to the balcony membrane. Water damage could cause dry rot, which could cause your balcony structure to be compromised. You may want to have a contractor advise you and the HOA regarding whether or not the tile adversely affects underlying common area. If the HOA allows you to keep the tile, you may be asked to enter into a common area alteration agreement, in which you take responsibility for the tile and any problems it might cause in the future. Any time a homeowner wishes to add something to

By Janice Gough Approximately one out of ten people over the age of 60, have experienced some form of elder abuse. Some estimates range as high as 5 Million elders who are abused each year. One study estimated that only one in 14 cases of abuse are reported to authorities. Abusers are both women and men. In almost sixty percent of elder abuse and neglect cases, the perpetrator is a family member. Two thirds of perpetrators are adult children or spouses. Abusers may pretend to be your trusted friend or a loving relative, but then steal you blind. Being isolated socially or having a mental impairment, like dementia or Alzheimer’s, are two factors which places the elderly in a more vulnerable situation. Recent studies show that nearly half of those with dementia experienced abuse or neglect. Violence also occurs at disproportionately high rates among adults with disabilities. There are many forms of abuse: Physical, Neglect and Mistreatment, Verbal and Emotional, and Financial. When I hear a story about someone who is famous, wealthy, who may have people all around them, and then learn that they lived their later years in abuse and neglect or how they have been robbed financially, it is apparent that this subject must have a better “awareness campaign”. Many people do not address their abuse, especially when a family member is involved. The fear of more abuse and, also,

that the abuser may lose employment and livelihood if an incident were reported. Those who are born during the 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s were taught to be polite to everyone. They desire for others to like them. Con artists recognize these aspects, and understand that these age groups are easier to Con for those reasons. Also, the fact that most, own their own home and have acquired other significant assets are the reason they are targeted. No matter what age you are, there is not a sole alive who has not been Conned by someone. It is so easy to be trusting and not see the signs of abusers. The following are real life stories that may increase your awareness: An attorney from Minneapolis was convicted of Elder Abuse and sentenced in January of 2017 to a correctional facility for 41 months. She embezzled $50 Million dollars from her 90-year old aunt. In Westlake Village, Ca. in 2008, a 78-year old lady’s daughter, administered Fentanyl to the mother, then changed her will. Her mother died in four days with her

money in film making, which served his own personal gain and lost most of her fortune. Financial exploitation is selfreported at rates higher than emotional physical and sexual abuse or neglect, buy due to “self- pride”, many cases go unreported. Elders who have been abused have a 300 percent higher risk of death. Financial abuse and fraud costs older Americans an estimated $36.5 Billion per year. Most have penalties for those who victimize older adults. Increasingly, across the country law enforcement officers and prosecutors are trained on elder abuse and ways to use criminal and civil laws to bring abusers to justice. It is important to review Elder Justice Laws and other State resources, compiled by NCEA. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs. Elder Abuse Awareness Can Save your Life and Assets estate going to the daughter. In Palm Desert, Ca., a 76-year old retired gentleman, who resided in a board and care facility, while being heavily medicated, signed a holographic will, which was re-written and given to him by his brother. The new will transferred his home in Sun City and other assets to the brother, while cutting his only daughter out of everything. In Palm Springs, Ca., a 74year old women, who mother’s estate was to be split between her two daughters, learned her sister terminated the will and the new will gave the 74 year old sister a house filled with old furniture, while the younger sister inherited $3.5 Million in Municipal Bonds and property. The mother’s granddaughter then took the house and sold it, keeping all the profit. Again, during the time the will was changed the younger daughter made sure the mother stayed heavily medicated. An incident was reported in May, in which a wealthy lady from Palm Desert gave $30 Million to her advisor to invest safely. California May Restrict Pesticide After Feds Refuse to Ban It

A 2011 UC Berkeley study of mothers and children in Salinas linked chlorpyrifos exposure to lower IQ scores and developmental delays. (Wasan Gredpree/iStockphoto) By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California regulators have moved one step closer to placing big restrictions on the use of a pesticide that President Donald

Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency refused to ban earlier this year. The California Department of Pesticide Regulation just released an updated draft risk assessment for chlorpyrifos.

It’s one of the most widelyused pesticides in the state, applied to golf courses and about 50 crops, including almonds, grapes, walnuts, oranges and cotton. But Cheryl Watson,

assistant director of communications with Cal EPA said chlorpyrifos is a dangerous neurotoxin that can float toward schools and homes in low-income farm communities. “This pesticide has been in use for more than 50 years,” Watson said. “But a review of the latest science by the Department of Pesticide Regulation shows that they are finding that it has a possible risk to children’s developing brains when it’s airborne.” In March, as one of his first official acts, the head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, went against the advice of his agency’s scientific advisors and decided not to ban chlorpyrifos, just weeks after meeting with the CEO of Dow Chemical. In 2015, California restricted the sale of chlorpyrifos, so only people

with special training and a permit from county agricultural commissioners can buy it. Craig Cassidy, public information officer with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, said the state is considering further restrictions, despite federal inaction. “Right now, we already have a required buffer zone of 150 feet between sensitive sites and applications. We could maybe triple that,” Cassidy said. The public comment period on the risk assessment is now open for 45 days. By next month, the state will share guidelines with county agriculture commissioners to expand the distance between the fields and communities so as to lessen the risk of accidental exposure. A final decision from the state could come late next year.

First images of damaged & flooded USS John S. McCain after collision By Desert Star Staff First footage showing a significantly damaged US guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain has emerged online. The warship collided with a merchant vessel near the coast of Singapore. The video shows the 505ftlong USS John S. McCain heading to Singapore with a huge dent in its left-hand side, which it received in a collision with a 600ft oil and chemical tanker, the Alnic MC. The US Navy confirmed that the warship sustained significant damage and that some compartments were flooded. “Significant damage to the hull resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms. Damage control efforts by the crew halted further flooding,” the US Navy’s 7th Fleet said in a statement on Monday. Five crew members of the McCain were injured in the collision, four of whom were evacuated to a local hospital with “non-lifethreatening injuries” while one more sailor “does not require further medical attention,” according to the US Navy. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing for 10 missing sailors, with US Air Force MH-60S helicopters and MV-22 Ospreys assisting Singapore Navy vessels. On Monday, US Defense Secretary James Mattis announced that the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) will be investigating 7th Fleet operations related to “incidents at sea.” This is the second incident

in just two months involving a US destroyer colliding with a merchant vessel. Seven sailors died when the USS Fitzgerald was struck by a container ship in June. Twelve crew members have been punished by the Navy, including the ship’s commander and executive officer. The Alnic MC, which sails under the flag of Liberia, is a 600ft oil and chemical tanker with a gross tonnage of 30,000. The vessel sustained “damage to her Fore Peak Tank 7m above the waterline.” None of its crew members were injured. The vessel arrived at Changi Naval Base in Singapore with significant damage and several flooded compartments. Significant damage to the hull resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms. Damage control efforts by the crew halted further flooding,” the US Navy’s 7th Fleet said in a statement. The statement adds that four injured crewmembers were sent to a military hospital, with “non-life-threatening injuries,” while one more injured person “does not require further medical attention.” The US warship hit the Alnic MC vessel, which sustained “damage to her Fore Peak Tank 7m above the waterline, with no crew injuries,” said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. “There is no report of oil pollution and traffic in the Singapore Strait is unaffected,” the MPA added. The tanker was carrying some 12,000 tonnes of fuel oil from

At least 5 sailors have been injured and 10 are missing after a US guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain “sustained damage” in collision with a merchant vessel while on a routine port visit to Singapore, the US Navy has said. Although the US warship is sailing on its own power and heading to port, the Navy announced that a searchand-rescue mission was under way in coordination with local authorities. Tug boats, coast guard and Singapore navy vessels and helicopters are all involved in the rescue efforts, in addition to MV-22s and SH-60s aircraft from the USS America. Admiral John Michael Richardson, who currently serves as the 31st Chief of Naval Operations, said the Navy’s top priority was “determining the safety of the ship and crew,” promising to share more August 23, 2017

details of the incident when it becomes available. On Monday, US Defense Secretary James Mattis announced that Richardson will be investigating 7th Fleet operations related to “incidents at sea.” Meanwhile, Senator John Sidney McCain III, after whose father and grandfather – both US admirals – the vessel was named, tweeted words of support to America’s sailors. The merchant vessel Alnic is 182 meters (600 feet) long and has a dead weight of 50,760 tons, the Washington Post reported. The ship has a 30,000+ ton oil/chemical tank and was built in 2007. The Alnic sails under the Liberian flag and is reportedly operated by Stealth Maritime Corporation S.A. The USS McCain is a 505-foot-long Arleigh Burkeclass destroyer based at the 7th Fleet’s home port in Yokosuka, Japan, and was commissioned in 1994. Earlier this month, it sailed within a 12-mile range of Mischief Reef

in the disputed Spratly islands chain in the South China Sea. US President Donald Trump also referred to the warship as a show of force during the latest verbal exchange amid escalating tensions with North Korea. The incident marks the second US warship collision with a trade vessel this summer. On 17 June 2017, seven American sailors were killed after the destroyer USS Fitzgerald collided with some 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan. In May this year, a guidedmissile cruiser, the USS Lake Champlain crashed into a 60-foot South Korean fishing boat. No one was injured during the open sea incident. Roughly a year ago, on August 19, a nuclear ballisticmissile submarine, the USS Louisiana, collided with a military sealift command support vessel, the USNS Eagleview off the coast of Washington State. No one was injured in the collision. www.desertstarweekly.com

Historic 1993 Protest Got Cheeky with The Klan

By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. — Most Americans will be gazing up at the sky today for a view of the total solar eclipse - when the moon slips between the Earth and sun. But almost 25 years ago, a “moon” of a different sort caught people’s attention. Some folks in Austin, Texas, were tired of annual Ku Klux Klan rallies at the State Capitol, and staged the Great Mass Mooning of the KKK in January 1993. Some participants in the huge counter-protest dropped their pants on cue to show the klansmen they were the real butt of the joke. Richard Boland was one of the hundred or so to bare his... opinion. “I remember it because it was such a good time. I enjoyed it,” Boland said. “It ended up being a lot

bigger counter-protest than I expected. Naked disrespect, by all means.” He said he isn’t sure if that form of counter-protest was any more effective than the others, but he did hear of a few other so-called mass moonings in the years that followed. And the Klan never did come back to the Texas State Capitol. Contemporary white supremacist rallies and counter-protests have taken on a much more serious tone. Police and authorities say they’re concerned about the presence of assault rifles and other weapons. But documentary filmmaker John Spottswood Moore has been researching the mooning for his movie, “When We Were Live.” He said it worked to confront the Klan’s self-importance.

In 1993, the Great Mass Mooning of the KKK helped mark the last Klan rally at the Texas State Capitol. (Hank Sinatra/ACTV/Youtube) “I think that it’s a great tactic,” Moore said. “We can be comical, we can be creative. They want you to yell and scream, and fight and give them reasons why they can

say, ‘Look, these people are just as bad as us.’ We don’t have to stoop to their level.” Moore said there was even a theme song for the mooning - a reworking of, “If

You’re Happy and You Know It.” He recalled it included the lines, “If you’re happy and you know it, bare your butt to show it - if you’re happy and you know, it moon the Klan.”

By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX -- Civil rights and immigrants’ rights groups are planning a giant protest Tuesday outside the Phoenix Convention Center where President Donald Trump is set to hold a campaignstyle rally at 6 p.m. Organizers are expecting thousands to protest a possible pardon of former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who faces six months in prison for flouting a court order to stop racially profiling Latinos as suspected undocumented immigrants. James Garcia is communications director with PAZ, one of several groups organizing the rally. He called the idea of a pardon hypocritical. “This is the same

contingency of people who insist that the law is the law and this is why there should be zero tolerance towards the presence of undocumented immigrants,” Garcia said. “And yet, after a federal judge convicts Sheriff Arpaio, the President seems quite willing to come and essentially say, ‘The law doesn’t matter.’” Arizona Democratic Congressman Raul Grijalva will headline the protest, with contingents from multiple groups including Puente, Indivisible, and Somos America. Trump supporters are expected to flock to the event as well, and mount a counter-protest outside. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton asked the President to delay his trip, in light of the violence last weekend in

Charlottesville, Va., but the request was disregarded. Garcia said he worries extremists may have taken heart after the President’s initial tepid response to Charlottesville. “The death of the young woman there speaks to the worst that can happen when essentially, you allow and inspire folks who somehow believe that it’s perfectly fine to be racist; it’s perfectly fine to be white supremacist,” he said. The Phoenix Police Department is putting plans in place to prevent any clashes between the two sides in the hopes that the event will remain peaceful, much like the anti-hate demonstrations over the weekend in Boston and Dallas.

On DACA’s 5th Anniversary, CA Immigrants’ Rights Advocates Press On

By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO – Immigrants’ rights advocates are speaking out - because today is the fifth anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. California is home to more than 220,000 people who were brought to the U.S. as children and gained the right to work here when President Obama signed an executive order in 2012. President Trump promised on the campaign trail to show great heart with regards to the so-called “dreamers.” But Sen. Kamala Harris, a California Democrat, points out that his new chief of staff – former Homeland Security chief General John Kelly - wouldn’t vow to protect them during www.desertstarweekly.com

his confirmation hearing. “We pressed thenSecretary Kelly, asking him to make a commitment to keep America’s promise to these young people, that we would not share their information with ICE, which would lead to their deportation,” she says. “And he refused to do so.” Trump did sign an extension of DACA in June. But nine states’ attorneys general are threatening to sue if Trump doesn’t rescind the program. Attorney General Jeff Sessions - a hard-liner on immigration - has not said whether the Justice Department will fight to keep DACA. Harris co-sponsored the DREAM Act to permanently reauthorize the program and says she supports comprehensive

immigration reform. Felipe Salazar’s parents brought him to the U.S. from Colombia when he was ten. He has since earned a master’s in computer engineering - and says he was able to find a job at a high-tech firm in San Francisco - thanks to DACA. “Since then, my life has changed in a multitude of ways,” he says. “I can drive and I can work. I can support myself and my family. And I have been able to contribute to society to the fullest extent of my skills.” There are 800,000 DACA recipients in the U.S. Harris estimates that removing those people from the workforce would cost California $11 billion in annual GDP and cost the country $433 billion over the next ten years. NC Health Centers Meet Needs of LGBTQ Community By Desert Star Staff ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Community health centers across North Carolina meet the medical needs of a diverse population, many of whom aren’t finding adequate care elsewhere. One such group is the LGBTQ community, and Western North Carolina Community Health Services, or WNCCHS, has just received a $10,000 grant to help serve this population. It’s from the Campaign for Southern Equality (CSE), and Rev. Jasmine BeachFerrara, the group’s executive director, says the need for these health services is great. “LGBTQ people, unfortunately, continue to be second-class citizens under the law, and also continue to experience disproportionate health disparities in a number of different areas – including mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, and then oftentimes, just access to care where

people will be treated with cultural competency and respect,” she states. WNCCHS runs the only Transgender Health Program in the region, serving more than 200 patients a year. This fall, WNCCHS and CSE will run a series of free clinics on topics ranging from safety concerns to legal issues. Buncombe County has a higher percentage of samesex couples than any other county in the state. Charlotte, Durham and Raleigh already offer similar resources. Scott Parker, WNCCHS director of development and collaboration, says it serves 18 counties in western North Carolina, and this collaboration is just the beginning. “Our hopes are to help other community health centers, especially in the deep South – offer them best practices for how to make your health center a very welcoming place for the LGBTQ community,

Western North Carolina Community Health Services has received a $10,000 grant from the Campaign for Southern Equality to expand medical services to the LGBTQ community. (justgrimes/Flickr) and that it doesn’t need to be a secret,” he states. “You need to be able to promote that, so people will see that and know it.” Beach-Ferrara maintains teaching other health centers across the state can make a big difference. “What’s often missing,

though, is the access to the kind of training and support that can allow a clinic to go from saying, ‘Hey, we’re open to this and we’re ready to do this,’ to saying, ‘We’re going to institutionalize these practices, so from the second an LGBT person walks in the door of this

clinic, they know that they’re welcome,’” she stresses. According to The Williams Institute, more than 336,000 LGBTQ people call North Carolina home, including 38,000 transgender individuals. They also are more likely to live in poverty and without health insurance.

Barcelona on Thursday in an operation at Subirats, just outside Barcelona, following a manhunt which began last Thursday. Trapero also confirmed that Imam Abdelbaki Es Satty, suspected of being the mastermind behind the operation, was killed in an accidental explosion at the cell’s base of operations in Alcanar. The bomb disposal unit deployed a robot at the scene to inspect what they thought was an explosive belt worn by Abouyaaqoub. Abouyaaqoub was shot as he approached a police vehicle. Local media claim that police helicopters are searching the area for a suspected accomplice and authorities have asked people in the area not to broadcast the location of checkpoints

as the security operation is ongoing. Earlier Monday, police released an image of Younes Abouyaaqoub, seeking information on his whereabouts. “The driver of the van is dangerous and may be armed. Wanted for his role in the attack in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas, which occurred on August 17,” Catalan law enforcement said. A total of 15 people died as a result of the terrorist attacks in Catalonia on Thursday. Thirteen died in the attack on Las Ramblas, while one other was killed in the attack in the resort town of Cambrils later that day. The driver of a car used as an escape vehicle by the suspected van attacker succumbed to his injuries today having been stabbed multiple times.

The manhunt came to an end in Subirats, west of Barcelona, after officers received a tipoff on a suspicious man wearing an explosive belt. Abouyaaqoub is believed to have driven a rented van into pedestrians in Barcelona before escaping on foot. As Chemlal, Driss Oukabir, Mohamed Aallaa and Salh El Karib gave their statements on the double attacks at the court, a Spanish prosecutor reportedly requested that the

judge detain the four without bail, according to EL Pais. Two of the suspects told the court that imam Abdelbaki Es Satty was the instigator, Spanish media reported, adding that the public prosecutor had asked the judge to send all four to jail while investigations continued. The four may face jail terms on charges of belonging to a terrorist organization, murder and possession of explosives, El Pais reported, citing the prosecution

the attack are either dead or in custody, but the authorities are not closing the investigation. Today the 12 names that we have always referred to are in the hands of the justice system, or sadly, as a result of their actions, have been killed,” Catalan police chief Josep Lluis Trapero told a press conference Monday evening, as cited by Reuters. Despite Abouyaaqoub’s death, Trapero stated that the international probe into the attack “should not be considered closed,” adding instead that “new lines of investigation have been opened up and there will be further developments in the coming weeks.” Trapero confirmed the death of Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, the suspected driver in the terrorist attack on Las Ramblas in

By Desert Star Staff A suspected member of the terrorist cell which carried out attacks in Catalonia said the group planned a bigger attack with explosives, Spanish media report. The testimony comes as four alleged group members appear at the high court in Madrid. The testimony came from Mohamed Houli Chemlal, who was first to testify. The alleged terrorist group member didn’t specify the target for the larger attack initially plotted by the group, EL Pais reports, citing unnamed judicial sources.

However, a conflicting report by El Mundo claims that Chemlal provided details of an initial plot. He reportedly told the judge the group was going to attack major Barcelona monuments, including the Sagrada Familia cathedral, confirming a previous statement he gave to Catalan police. Chemlal appeared in court with three other surviving suspects on Tuesday. The four are believed to be members of the group responsible for the Thursday carnage at tourist hotspot Las Ramblas in Barcelona,

which left 13 people dead and scores injured, as well as the Cambrils attack that followed hours later, in which a woman was stabbed to death. While the five assailants of the attack in Cambrils were shot by police in a standoff, two other suspected cell members, including the possible mastermind of both assaults, imam Abdelbaki Es Satty, died earlier in an accidental blast in a house in Alcanar. There, police found 120 butane canisters believed to be used in bomb manufacturing. The last suspect, 22-year-

Study of Heartland’s Unsung Heroes Finds Trust, Not Power, is Key

By Desert Star Staff KANSAS CITY, Mo. – When you want to make substantive changes to your community and do meaningful work, it’s natural to first seek out the most powerful people in town. But just concluded research from an anthropologist and data scientist suggests something different. Karen Stephenson spent several months in Kansas City looking for what she calls key connectors – simply people who get things done. She notes that her list of more than 200 key connectors doesn’t mirror the typical who’s who of local power brokers because money and notoriety aren’t at the core. “’Your word is your bond’ is another kind of power,” she points out. “It’s called soft power. But it’s, in fact, more durable and more sturdy than ascribed power.” Stephenson explains the phenomenon by noting that innovation and entrepreneurship

Anthropologist Karen Stephenson says soft power or trust yields innovation in metropolitan areas such as Kansas City. Stephenson has conducted similar research in other large metro areas, but this is the first work she’s done in the Midwest. The list of connectors she compiled in Philadelphia only contained a 1 percent overlap of the annual publication of

the city’s 100 most influential. She says people who get things done are willing to go out on a limb with other risk takers who have a heart for their communities. “That doesn’t always happen with elected officials or ascribed positions in leadership positions like in companies and for-profits and not-for-profits,” she points out. “I’m not saying that it can’t happen, I’m just saying that many times it isn’t there.”

Brewers and Anglers to EPA: Keep Headwaters Clean

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – Beer makers plan to join forces with outdoor recreation businesses and conservation groups today at the EPA’s Denver headquarters. They’re protesting the agency’s plan to roll back the 2015 Clean Water Rule. Tyler Baskfield with the group Trout Unlimited says the move could undermine protections for 20 million acres of wetlands and 60 percent of U.S. streams, www.desertstarweekly.com

which provide drinking water for one in three Americans. “These streams are important to sportsmen, they’re important to business owners, they’re important to people who use drinking water here in the state,” he says. “And it’s a big part of our identity to keep protections on these streams, and keep our livelihood and way of life protected moving forward.” The Obama-era rule clarified which headwaters

and wetlands would be protected by the Clean Water Act. In June, EPA chief Scott Pruitt officially kick-started a process to repeal the measure, saying it hinders businesses. According to E-and-E News, Pruitt recently appeared in an agribusiness video urging farmers and ranchers to submit comments on the proposal. Stephenson says hierarchies that were effective in the 1900s are giving way to more interconnected systems because innovation increases when people work laterally across trust-based networks. Stephenson notes that while key connectors work in trust-based networks, they are also individuals who push beyond their comfort zones and establish diverse community relationships.

He says in Colorado, removing protections could be devastating for trout species that are especially sensitive to pollution. “It’s a big part of what comprises our fisheries, even the fisheries that are lower down depend on these headwaters for sustaining fish populations,” he adds. Last week, the EPA extended the public comment period on its proposal to repeal the Clean Water Rule to September 27.

How to Help Your Child Prepare for Kindergarten

By Desert Star Staff Kindergarten is an exciting time for children, but it can also be a stressful time of change -- not just for little ones, but for parents, too. Although each child is unique and develops at his or her own pace, most educators and experts agree that four key areas of development are essential for further growth and achievement in school. To help your child prepare for kindergarten and make a smooth transition, here are a few ways to support these key areas of development at home: • Vocabulary and Oral Language Development: Encourage your child to communicate through words. Have your child tell you a story, asking questions that invite description. For example, if your child says a dog was chasing a stick, ask what color was the dog? Did he run fast or slowly? Was the stick big or small? In public, give your child opportunities to speak for him or herself or make requests. If he or she is asked what they want to eat and drink at a restaurant, let your child reply, even if you know the answer.

• Social-Emotional Skills: Children will use socialemotional skills every day once in kindergarten, whether they’re asking a teacher for help, being polite to classmates or following instructions. Scheduling a fun, unstructured play date is a great way to let children interact with peers, helping them learn to share and express themselves through play. • Small Motor Control: Developing small motor skills can be as easy as coloring with your child and cutting with scissors -- anything that gets those fingers and toes moving! Other great activities include putting puzzles together, building with blocks, throwing, catching and kicking a ball, riding a tricycle as well as activities like running, jumping and climbing. • Attention to Sensory and Visual Detail: Paying attention to one’s senses is a mindful practice that can help prepare children for the academic world of kindergarten. Noticing textures, smells and tastes, and using language to describe these details, fosters vocabulary development and encourages children to

compare and contrast their experiences. At snack time, ask your child to describe the food with words like sweet or sour, crunchy or juicy, rough or smooth. When playing with puzzles, ask your child to sort the puzzle pieces and then describe what colors, patterns, edges, or other visual details the pieces share. Parents may find certain tools useful towards helping children learn core school and life skills. For example, LeapFrog’s LeapStart Learning System gets kids excited about counting, learning to read, problem solving and more with fun, re-playable activities. An ergonomic stylus reads invisible dots on every page, triggering questions, challenges, songs, jokes and more. Engaging new content featuring popular children’s characters and the availability of LeapFrog’s acclaimed Learn to Read series give children the tools they need to build tomorrow’s skills today. Don’t worry if your child hasn’t mastered all his or her letters, sounds and numbers by the time school starts. Children come to kindergarten August 23, 2017

at many different levels. The teacher will practice these skills with your child throughout

the school year, but you can help by continuing to reinforce them at home. StatePoint www.desertstarweekly.com

Something for Every Age Group on DVD

Nature’s Great Race

Where oh where has the summer gone? It seems like only yesterday when school let out for summer vacation. Now school is back in session, and the world has just experienced a total eclipse of the sun. With so much going on in our world, perhaps it’s time to chill out, relax and take time to enjoy some recent movie and TV titles now available on DVD. There are many choices on hand for every age group and here are a few suggestions. From PBS Masterpiece, there is “Prime Suspect Tennison.” This is the eagerly awaited prequel to “Prime Suspect,” a PBS hit that starred Dame Helen Mirren in the role of Jane Tennison, a formidable London police detective. In the prequel, this visuallystunning drama rewinds to 1970s London to portray the early career of Tennison, now played by Stefanie Martini At this point she is an ambitious, single-minded 22-year-old probationary officer. It is evident from the start that she is dedicated with an instinctive approach as she is thrown into a brutal murder investigation, witnessing first-hand the devastating effects of violent crime, as well as experiencing tragic ramifications herself. The show also immerses us in the music, fashion and politics that defined a generation. DVD’ bonus material includes: Cars of the 70s, Dressing the 70s, Hair of the 70s and Policing in the 70s. For the younger set, there’s “Room on the Broom” from PBS, a tale of a kind witch who invites a collection of animals www.desertstarweekly.com

to join her on her broom, which frustrates her cat. When she encounters a fierce and hungry dragon, her animal friends come to her rescue. To reward them, she gets a magnificent new broom with plenty of room for everyone. The animated film is based on the beloved children’s picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The characters are voiced by Gillian Anderson, Rob Brydon, Martin Clunes, Simon Pegg and Timothy Spall. Special features include: “Behind-the-Scenes the Scenes Documentary,” “Julia Donaldson Live Performance” and “Artwork Gallery.” Animal lovers of all ages will thrill to PBSs “Nature’s Great Race.” In this epic adventure, you get to follow three iconic animals—caribou, elephants and zebra—on three breathtaking wildlife adventures, journeying across hundreds of miles of Canadian arctic wilderness and African bush. As cameras follow individual animals every step of the way, you will witness their close calls, their successes and failures. You will also discover the true driving forces that compel them to risk everything. Approximately 180 minutes in length. For an animal thrill ride, there’s “Kong: Skull Island” from Warner Bros. This adventure is pure fantasy as an intrepid group head to the very mysterious Skull Island, not located on any map. Somehow John Goodman convinces the government to fund his mission against their better judgement. To help protect Goodman and his colleagues, he is provided

with a group of US soldiers who were scheduled to return stateside following the end of WW II. The small unit assigned to them is headed by Samuel L. Jackson. When they fly through the shrouded mist covering this uncharted island, they incur the wrath of the gigantic ape, Kong whose mission is to protect the animals on Skull island from any form of predator. Others in the cast include Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and John C. Reilly as a soldier whose plane crashed over the island at the beginning of the great war. To capture the primordial landscape of this island director Jordan VogtRoberts and his team filmed across three continents—Oahu, Hawaii, Australia’s Gold Coast and Vietnam— for six months in order to create Skull Island. As thing’s heat up, we and the

group, encounter all sorts of very large beasts under the protection of the mighty Kong. It is a fun thrill ride, but it would have been even more exciting if there had been a little less of Samuel L. Jackson’s character and more of the mighty Kong. The DVD is filled with added features, including “Creating a King: Realizing an Icon,” “On Location: Vietnam,” deleted scenes and more. Running time is 118 minutes. The film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action and for brief strong language. “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” debuted on Blu-ray and DVD on August 8th from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. In this tale, the child Arthur’s father is murdered by Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur’s uncle, who then seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and

with no idea of who he truly is, Arthur grows up the hard way, in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life changes drastically, and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy, whether he likes it or not. The Blu-ray Combo Pack contains many special features, including: “Arthur with Swagger.” Played by Charlie Hunnam, Arthur is a gentleman, a hunk and a rebel, setting new standards as king and brand new rules with the ladies. The combo pack also contains many other features, including “Parry and Bleed,” showing how Hunnam and cast members got a crash course in swordplay, Vikings vs Saxon’s style. Running time is 126 minutes. It is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, some suggestive content and brief strong language.

Valley Pet Lovers Come Out To Clear The Shelters KMIR Tyler Harrison Palm Springs, CA - Cold noses and warm hearts filled the Palm Springs Animal Shelter on Saturday as hundreds of locals looked for their next, “forever friend.” KMIR News along with NBCUniversal spearheaded the 3rd Annual “Clear The Shelters” pet adoption event. This nationwide event has helped save nearly 250,000 shelter animals over the past three years by matching them with a loving family. “We won’t have these pets here tonight, they’ll all be resting

in a nice bed,” said Daniel Sumner, Palm Springs Animal Shelter Director of Operations. “A lot of our dogs and cats they will adopt a human,” said Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon. Adoption fees at participating shelters was only $20 which helped make finding your new “best friend” a lot easier. It also allowed adopters to budget for a few extra toys and treats in the process. “We the like the ones that are the most cuddly and most friendly,” said Giorgio Barone from Rancho Mirage. He and his sister, Stefani Barone, are

new cat owners. “All animals need a home so its good to adopt animals cause they need a home,” said Giorgio. However, finding forever homes is sometimes easier said than done. “It’s not easy and its expensive and you see all the volunteers here, it takes a tremendous amount of work, people volunteering to make this all work, “ said Mayor Moon. This year’s event helped find 61 cats and 29 dogs a new home. Source: KMIR

People Who Are Blind View Eclipse in Real Time By Desert Star Staff LOUISVILLE, Ky., Aug. 22, 2017 -- For the first time in known history, people who are blind experienced the solar eclipse, as it happened, thanks to a developing technology that allowed them to feel a real time, changing image. Employees of the American Printing House for the Blind (APH), the co-inventor of the Graphiti™, and students of the Kentucky School for the Blind gathered together to “touch” the sun and experienced this historic event with their friends, family, and co-workers. Graphiti, a device being developed by APH and Orbit Research, combines an array of 2400 movable pins with image software to create a tactile representation. A camera provided the eclipse image, and the shape of the moon and sun crossing paths refreshed every 10 seconds. For people who are blind, the experience of “touching” the sun, in real time, was a thrill. It also gave participants the opportunity to share

in a worldwide event. “No one was sitting on the sidelines today,” said APH President Craig Meador. “Learning equality is not just about providing the same information that people who are sighted have. It’s about providing the same social, historical and other experiences that everyone else is enjoying.” The prototype Graphiti used at the eclipse viewing is currently the only one in existence, but APH hopes to have them ready for sale next year. “Ideally we would have had units for everyone around the world today,” said Larry Skutchan, one of the Graphiti’s developers. “We are excited to see how Graphiti will be used in science classrooms, business workplaces, museums … the possibilities are endless. Just imagine where this technology will be by the time of the next eclipse!” Learn more about Graphiti and the work of the American Printing House for the Blind at: www.aph.org.

Wireless Tips for Boomers

By Desert Star Staff There are currently more than 93 million Americans in the U.S. over age 55, according to Census data, and the vast majority (74 percent) of them have a smartphone. And that number keeps growing. In addition, Baby Boomers spend an average of 149 minutes a day on their smartphones -- about as much as smartphoneobsessed Millennials at

171 minutes per day. Despite these figures, and the fact that members of this generation were the inventors of the wireless industry, many mobile plans for Americans aged 55 plus are still designed for a time before the Internet. They come with limited minutes, and no data. “The fact is that many ‘senior’ plans offer limited services that only work with basic phones. This

doesn’t make sense for most of today’s modern, mobile adults,” says John Legere, CEO and president of T-Mobile. “Unfortunately, many carriers and plans treat these generations like they’re stuck in the past.” But even without the dumbed down “senior” plans, empty nesters aren’t given great options. When kids leave the house and are off the family plan, most major carriers raise

the per line cost by almost 60 percent, costing customers a hefty sum when it’s time to pay the bill each month. So how can you find the best deal for your needs? When looking for a plan, consider the following. • How many lines do you need? Virtually every wireless provider has a lower per line cost for four lines instead of two. So, if you only need two lines, look for a plan that won’t penalize you for not having four. • If you’re a frequent traveler -- whether it’s for business or pleasure -- ensure your wireless plan offers the perks you need to avoid sticker shock on your bills when you get home. T-Mobile ONE includes compelling perks for travelers – like an hour of free Gogo in-flight Internet on domestic flights and high-speed data in Mexico and Canada, and data and texting from 140 countries and destinations around the world. Congressman Raul Ruiz Holds Charlottesville Discussion By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, CA Congressman Raul Ruiz invited community members and leaders to discuss the violence that broke out after the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, VA. “We had multiple faith based leaders. We had Muslims, we had Christians, we had the Jewish community, we had LGBT members, Latinos and immigrants,” Ruiz said, listing off the variety of community members who attended. The congressman said it was important for community members to address the violence in Charlottesville. “We’ve been hearing from community members who are experiencing a strong sense of isolation, anxiety and fear because of what happened

in Charlottesville,” Ruiz said. Fr. Howard Lincoln with Sacred Heart Church said he’s still in shock from what happened. “It’s hard to believe that there’s people like that in our country, and we fought a second world war to defeat Nazism,” Lincoln said. Religious leaders shared their opinions on how to prevent what happened in Charlottesville from happening in the Coachella Valley “This is about the phenomenon of hatred in American society, and what do we do here in the Coachella Valley to keep things safe,” said Rabbi David Lazar with Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs. Lincoln said everyone agreed they need to be role models and be vocal.

Charlottesville has put the country on high alert for hate groups, and the Southern

“We have a moral responsibility to speak out against all hatred and to denounce it,” he said. Ruiz said he and other

leaders will stand behind anyone who experiences any type of hatred. “We are going to stand to protect you. It doesn’t

matter if you are republican, democrat, if you are an elderly person or a young person, if you’re gay or straight or affluent or indigent,” Ruiz said.

Poverty Law Center says they aren’t just a problem in the southern U.S. Research from the center has found Montana has the highest concentration of hate groups for its population in the country, with ten considered ‘active’ statewide. Rachel Carroll Rivas, codirector of the Montana Human Rights Network, says events like the Charlottesville protests can increase membership for extremist groups, but her organization focuses on stopping people before they join. “Our work is really with our friends, and neighbors and family, who are maybe unengaged or maybe they’re somewhat sympathetic but

are probably not necessarily deep into activists as white supremacists,” she explains. Rivas says while the rally in Virginia might inspire white supremacists, events like this usually have the opposite effect - prompting people to speak out against racism as well. To combat the threat of increasing hate crimes, the Human Rights Network has a rapid-response guide on its website at mhrn.org. Rivas says another danger after Charlottesville is bringing fringe ideas into the political mainstream, and that people should pay close attention to reactions from politicians. “We need to make sure that our leaders, our elected

officials, are not emboldening the white supremacists and farright patriot movements with their ideas; and then also that they’re not supporting them in ways that maybe don’t seem as obvious, through discriminatory policies,” she adds. It might be tempting to meet hate groups on the streets - like the violent clashes between protestors and counter-protestors seen in recent weeks - but Rivas calls that counterproductive. “We need to not do it on their terms,” she says. “We need to sort of switch it - be clear about what it is, but then go forward with actually what we would like our community to look like.”

Will Florida Utility Customers Pay Now for Future Power? By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A federal appeals court hears arguments this week in a case challenging a Florida law that leaves utility customers on the hook for speculative nuclear projects. The controversial nuclear cost-recovery law passed in 2006, at a time when nuclear power appeared to be making a comeback, but things have changed with the rise of renewable energy. Utility watchdog J.R. Kelly, public counsel for the Florida Office of Public Counsel, is asking regulators to reject the latest multi-billion dollar request by the state’s largest utility, Florida Power & Light. “We have a fundamental concern that ratepayers should not be paying profit on these costs when it is

unknown if the facility is even going to be built,” Kelly states. The plaintiffs contend the nuclear cost-recovery law is unconstitutional and seek to recoup $2 billion they say utility customers have already paid. FPL says it isn’t the right party to be sued – that it is following state law, so the State of Florida should be on the hot seat. But the plaintiffs say it’s the utility collecting money from consumers. Attorney George Cavros with the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy says ratepayers should be outraged over Florida’s nuclear cost-recovery law. Florida ratepayers are left on the hook for failed nuclear projects. (Mark Goebel/Flickr) “All the risk, all the costs, effectively fall upon their customers,” he stresses. “So, when they don’t make sense, recovery, essentially.” case, prompting the plaintiffs these utilities are encouraged because they can recover, A federal district judge to go to the U.S. Court to keep pursuing projects even and they’re guaranteed last year dismissed the of Appeals in Atlanta.

Amber Alert: 9-Year-Old in Danger, Suspect Armed

KMIR News Staff Coachella Valley Region - A car believed to have been used in the abduction of a 9-year-old

boy in Santa Maria, prompting an Amber Alert in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, was found

abandoned today, but the child and the suspect remained missing and were believed to be traveling in another vehicle.

According to the Santa Maria Police Department, Daniel Morozov was abducted at 8:39 p.m. Monday following a fatal shooting in Santa Maria in Santa Barbara County by 48-yearold Konstantin Morozov. Police initially said the suspect was last seen driving a blue 2015 Volkswagen Golf hatchback with license number 7JGG242, but that vehicle was found abandoned Tuesday morning in Santa Maria. Police said the boy and the suspect now may be in a black, 2017 Jeep Cherokee, license number 7XZK698. Police told the Los Angeles Times the suspect is the boy’s father, and he is suspected of killing the boy’s mother. Officers

A jury in Los Angeles, California, has ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay a record $417 million to a woman who claimed the talc in the company’s iconic baby powder caused her ovarian cancer. The verdict follows a series of court rulings against J&J over the product. The plaintiff, Eva Echeverria, alleged that J&J had failed to adequately warn consumers about its talcum powder’s potential cancer risks when used for feminine hygiene.Echeverria had used the baby powder on a daily basis since the 1950s until two years ago, according to court papers. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007. Her lawsuit said she developed the cancer as a “proximate result of the unreasonably dangerous and defective

nature of talcum powder.” “Mrs. Echeverria is dying from this ovarian cancer and she said to me all she wanted to do was to help the other women throughout the whole country who have ovarian cancer for using Johnson & Johnson for 20 and 30 years,” her attorney Mark Robinson said. J&J will appeal the jury’s decision, claiming that scientific evidence supports the safety of Johnson’s baby powder, according to the company’s spokeswoman Carol Goodrich. The Los Angeles jury verdict is the latest and largest in a series of rulings against J&J for its baby powder, the regular use of which hundreds of women claimed caused their ovarian cancer. In May, a court in St. Louis, Missouri ordered J&J to pay over $110 million

to a Virginia woman who claimed she developed ovarian cancer after decades of using its talcum powder. Earlier, three other lawsuits in St. Louis against the company and its baby powder had similar outcomes — with juries awarding damages of $72 million, $70.1 million and $55 million, respectively. While the verdicts were awarded to women who regularly used the company’s baby powder for feminine hygiene, the question whether the product does any harm to babies did not come up. Over 2,000 lawsuits were filed in different US cities accusing J&J of insufficient warning to consumers about cancer risks connected to its talc-containing products. Some of the lawsuits were tossed out. In March, a St. Louis jury rejected the claims of a Tennessee woman

with ovarian and uterine cancer who blamed talcum powder for her cancers. A judge in New Jersey tossed

went to the shooting scene at 230 N. College Drive in Santa Maria Monday night and found a person dead, according to the Santa Maria Police Department. As a result of the investigation, police asked for an Amber Alert for Daniel. Daniel is white, 4-foot5, 90 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing blue jeans. Konstantin Morozov is white, 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He should be considered armed and dangerous, authorities said. Anyone who sees Daniel or Konstantin Morozov was asked to call 911. Source: KMIR

MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

Rock and pop shine on album releases

Two fantastic live albums featuring the Rolling Stones, an eagerly-anticipated return from power pop hero Matthew Sweet and an under-the-radar instrumental tribute to The Beatles make for an essential mix of releases available now. Artist: The Rolling Stones Title: Ladies & Gentlemen… The Rolling Stones (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones, Mick Taylor Tell me more: Previously available only as a standalone DVD release, it is wonderful that “Ladies & Gentlemen… The Rolling Stones” is finally available on audio CD and digitally (as an MP3 or via streaming). The 16-track performance captured during the band’s four-night stint in Texas during the “Exile On Main Street” tour in 1972 stands as one of the British band’s best performances. Indeed, many fans of the Rolling Stones consider the band’s late ‘60s and early ‘70s material their strongest, and this performance is filled with standout tracks from their catalog delivered

with passion and firepower. Listen no further than the wild “Brown Sugar,” jaunty “Happy” (love Mick Taylor’s guitar work on that one), introspective “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and rowdy “Street Fighting Man.” Information: eagle-rock.com. Artists: Muddy Walters and The Rolling Stones Title: Checkerboard Lounge: Live Chicago 1981 (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters Tell me more: While the Rolling Stones’ 2016 “Blue & Lonesome” celebrated the band’s blues influences, a unique trek to Buddy Guy’s intimate club in Chicago in November 1981 showcased a more immersive commemoration of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ links with blues music. In the middle of the band’s ambitious American tour that year (which attracted approximately 3 million concertgoers), the Rolling Stones dropped by the Checkerboard Lounge to see one of the group’s most influential heroes, Muddy Waters, perform. It wasn’t

long before Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Ian Stewart were on stage performing with the legend. The quality is excellent, as are the loose and authentic performances. Standouts abound, with Muddy Waters’ leading the charge on “You Don’t Have to Go,” members of the Stones joining Waters for animated takes on the bona fide blues classics “Baby Please Don’t Go” and “Hoochie Coochie Man,” and a true allstar ensemble with Waters and members of the Stones joined by Chicago blues greats Buddy Guy and Junior Wells for a frantic “Got My Mojo Workin’.” Information: eagle-rock.com. Artist: Matthew Sweet Title: Tomorrow Forever (Honeycomb Hideout/RED) You might like if you enjoy: Marshall Crenshaw, the Bangles, the Raspberries Tell me more: Prior to the release of “Tomorrow Forever,” power pop hero Matthew Sweet had not issued a new studio album since 2011. “Tomorrow Forever” finds Sweet back with a welcome vengeance, bolstered by a marathon-length 17-song collection that fits on a single

audio CD disc but comes packaged as a double LP if you purchase it on vinyl. Sweet dealt with a number of life-changing events leading up to the release of “Tomorrow Forever” (including the death of his mother and a move from Los Angeles to Omaha, Nebraska), and there is a definite depth and purpose to the songs this time around. The driving “Trick,” swirling psychedelic-edged “Entangled,” tender “You Knew Me” (a beautiful tribute to his mother) and the longing rocker “Bittersweet.” In addition to his long-time rhythm section (bassist Paul Chastain and drummer Ric Menck), guests on “Tomorrow Forever” include Debbi Peterson (drummer of the Bangles), Jason Victor (Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3), Gary Louris (the Jayhawks), Val McCallum (Jackson Browne) and keyboardist Rod Argent (of The Zombies). Information: matthewsweet.com. Artist: Jason Falkner Title: Bedtime With The Beatles: Instrumental Versions of Classic Beatles Songs (Sony Wonder) You might like if you enjoy:

The Beatles, Laurence Juber Tell me more: Thanks to Jason Falkner’s continuing high-profile role as a touring member of Beck’s band and his acclaimed collaboration with R. Stevie Moore earlier this year (“Make It Be”), now is an excellent time to catch up on Falkner’s previous releases. I was recently introduced to Falkner’s 2001 release “Bedtime With The Beatles,” which features 11 instrumental versions of Fab Four classics. The Beatles’ time-tested tunes are solid enough to have fueled an endless parade of tributes, but it are Falkner’s singularly dazzling talents as multi-instrumentalist and arranger that make these artful versions rank alongside Laurence Juber’s fingerstyle guitar recordings as the finest instrumental interpretations of Lennon/McCartney compositions I’ve heard. A lush “Across The Universe,” haunting “I’m Only Sleeping,” dreamy baroque take of “Here There And Everywhere” and gentle guitar-meetskeyboards dance of “In My Life” are among my favorites. But the truth is every track on the disc is outstanding. Information: JasonFalkner.net.

‘We won’t talk troop numbers’: Trump vows ‘clear definition of victory’ in Afghanistan

By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump will loosen the rules of engagement for US troops in Afghanistan, but did not specify any changes in numbers of troops during his national address on the war at the Army’s Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, next to Arlington National Cemetery. Trump began his remarks addressing the recent violent political divisions, most vividly seen in Charlottesville, Virginia, last week.”When one part of America hurts, we all hurt,” Trump said, adding, “Loyalty to our nation demands loyalty to one another.” Trump added that US troops fighting wars abroad “deserve to return to a country that is not at war

with itself at home.”Trump acknowledged that his “instincts” told him to pull out troops from Afghanistan. “Historically, I like following my instincts,” Trump said. He concluded differently, however. “A hasty withdrawal,” Trump said, would create a “vacuum” for terrorists. Trump lamented the 20 terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the “highest concentration in any region, anywhere in the world,” he said. “Pakistan often gives safe haven to agents of chaos,” he said, noting that there is nuclear-powered tensions between Pakistan and its neighbor India. Trump called terrorists “nothing but

thugs and criminals and, that’s right, losers.” “We will not talk about numbers of troops,” Trump said. “Conditions on the ground,” not public timetables, will determine the US’ strategy, he said. “I will not say when we are going to attack, but attack we will,” he added. “We are not nation building again. We are killing terrorists,” he said. “Our troops will fight to win,” Trump said, and he insisted victory in Afghanistan would be clearly defined. “But we will no longer use American military might to construct democracies in far away lands, or try to rebuild other countries in our own August 23, 2017

image – those days are now over,” Trump said. “Instead, we will work with allies and partners to protect our shared interests. We are not asking others to change their way of life, but to pursue common goals that allow our children to live better lives. This Principled Realism will guide our decisions moving forward.”

Trump was widely expected to heed the advice of his senior advisors Monday evening and announce an increase of the number of US troops in Afghanistan, which currently stands around 8,400. About 2,400 Americans have died in the war, the longest in the US’ history. www.desertstarweekly.com

N. Korea will ‘never step back an inch’

A soldier salutes from atop vehicle carrying a missile past a stand with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during the parade, in Pyongyang. © Damir Sagolj / Reuters By Desert Star Staff A North Korean envoy to a UN disarmament forum has refused to negotiate its nuclear program, accusing the US and South Korea of using joint military drills to carry out “an aggressive war scenario” and “a secret operation” against the North’s leadership. “The DPRK will never place its self-defense nuclear deterrence on the negotiating table or step back from the path it took to bolster the national nuclear force,” a North Korean diplomat stated at the UN disarmament forum in Geneva, as cited by Reuters.

The envoy accused the US and its ally in the region, South Korea, of worsening the situation on the Korean Peninsula, saying that the ongoing joint military drills “would certainly add fuel to the fire.” Pyongyang considers the Ulchi Freedom Guardian maneuvers as “an aggressive war scenario,” targeting North Korea and its leadership, according to the envoy. “As long as the US hostile policy and nuclear threat remains unchallenged, the DPRK will never place its selfdefensive nuclear deterrence on

the negotiating table,” Ju Yongсhol, a North Korean envoy, stated at the UN disarmament forum on Tuesday. Ju also said that the bolstering of North Korea’s nuclear program “is justifiable and a legitimate option for selfdefense in the face of such apparent and real threats.” The North has repeatedly called on the US to refrain from military exercises which could “ignite a nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula at any cost,” according to the North’s state news agency KCNA. “The situation on the Korean Peninsula has plunged

into a critical phase due to the reckless north-targeted war racket of the war maniacs,” KCNA reported on Monday. Meanwhile, Pyongyang has again threatened to strike the US base in Guam, which it earlier promised to attack if “provoked” by Washington. “As you know, we have completed the preparation of the Guam strike. Everything will depend on whether the United States acts sensibly or not. If they do not do so, they will be shamed yet again on the Korean Peninsula in front of the whole world,” Jin Jong-hyop, a representative of the North Korean embassy in Russia, told Sputnik. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been rapidly increasing amid American drills in the region and the recent UN Security Council sanctions in response to continuous missile launches by North Korea. Russia has proposed a “double freeze” initiative, suggesting both sides suspend their military activities. Some 40,000 American and South Korean troops are taking part in the Ulchi Freedom Guardian drills on land, air and sea, along with civilian South Korean government personnel who train their civil defense responses. The exercises kicked off on Monday amid calls to cease tensions, and will run till August 31.

Native Americans seek to reclaim ancestral land from Brown University

By Desert Star Staff More than 50 members of the Pokanoket Nation and their supporters have set up an encampment in Rhode Island, arguing that the land bequeathed to Brown University was illegally taken from them hundreds of years ago. Over a dozen tents have been pitched at Po Metacom Camp on Mount Hope, or Potumtuk, a hill overlooking the Narragansett Bay. The activists have brought in firewood, food and water and set up toilet facilities, according to AP. The Pokanoket Tribe said they will pray for healing and repatriation of their spiritual lands that they claim “Brown University has been unlawfully occupying,” according to video posted by The Fang Collective on social media on Sunday. “We would like to sit down with Brown University right here on this property and break bread with them and talk about repatriating the lands back to the stewards of the land, the original peoples, the original inhabitants,” Sagamore William Guy (Po Wauipi Neimpaug) said on the video. A tribe’s sagamore is the chief of chiefs.

“We have done everything to engage with the powers at Brown, and they just do not want to talk to us, so this is the next step in trying to reach out. But they’ve acted as though we are an invisible people, so this time was the only means left open to us,” the sagamore said. he Pokanoket have a pending lawsuit against Bristol and the state of Rhode Island, and have recorded public and constructive notices to the town authorities, according to EarthFirst. University does not have an aboriginal title to the land. The Wampanoag chief Metacomet (also known as “King Philip”) and his descendants never signed over their right to the land hundreds of years ago, the Pokanoket said in a statement. In a statement issued Sunday, the Ivy League university said it upholds the right of people to assembly peaceably “provided that their actions do not infringe upon the rights of others.” Tribe members and supporters have set August 23, 2017

up checkpoints at the access road to the 375acre (152-hectare) parcel, which is located about half an hour’s drive from the university campus in Providence. Brown houses an extensive archaeology collection and environmental lab on the grounds. The university said the land had been donated in parcels over a period of years beginning in the 1950s and it claims the ownership was legally transferred.

Restoring the North River: Fish, Water Quality, Tourism for Shenandoah

Anglers say they’re seeing more and better brook trout since the North River has been restored closer to its natural state. (Mossy Creek Fly Fishing)

“Moving some of the roads so they wouldn’t be flooded and washed out, replacing some culverts that were impassible for fish, to help the stream get back to where it wants to be in a natural state,” he says. He also says the changes mean more cool, deep pools where trout like to live, plus better water quality downstream, all the way to the Shenandoah. This Thursday, the groups doing restoration host a public tour of similar projects on other waterways. They’re gathering at noon in Harrisonburg. Harrisonburg is halfway between the George Washington National Forest and Shenandoah National Park, and much of the local economy is based on outdoor tourism - hiking, biking, rock-climbing and fishing. Colby Trow, the owner of Mossy Creek Fly Fishing, says they’re about 40 minutes

from the restoration project in the GW. He says projects like this are a big deal for those who make their living from forest recreation. “It’s gigantic,” he exclaims. “Better habitat means more fish - and the more and bigger and healthier fish you have, the better the fishing. And the better the fishing, the more people that come to the area to fish.” According to Coffman, the coalitions they built can be used for other, similar river restoration projects in the area. He says in all, the projects will mean better drinking water for towns and cities on the rivers, and ultimately give a boost to efforts to clean up the bay. “We’re sending cleaning water downstream, which in turn is going to have beneficial impacts on the water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, but it also helps to maintain clean water for those communities,” Coffman added.

By Desert Star Staff LAS VEGAS, -- Wolfgang Puck’s legendary flagship restaurant Spago, recognized for igniting Las Vegas’s dining scene into a culinary epicenter, will open its doors at Bellagio Resort & Casino in spring 2018. Marking 25 years since the fine-dining phenomenon debuted in Las Vegas, Puck’s now revolutionary restaurant heralded the era of celebrity chefs and haute cuisine that continues to define the city’s restaurant scene today. The new restaurant will offer an elevated experience, featuring an open-air patio with prime views of the iconic Fountains of Bellagio. “Just as Spago is credited with beginning the Las Vegas culinary revolution, Bellagio transformed the casino-resort industry when it opened with the first collection of worldfamous chefs and restaurants,” said Wolfgang Puck. “My partners and I are thrilled to join the Bellagio family and introduce our new Spago to the thousands of international guests the resort welcomes daily. We reimagined Spago in Beverly Hills more than 20 years ago and look forward to doing the same in Las Vegas.” Bellagio President and COO Randy Morton said, “Wolfgang Puck is known worldwide for delivering exceptional restaurant hospitality. From cuisine to service and, of course, style, he is intricately involved in all aspects of the business, providing first-class culinary experiences for his guests.
