The complementary special event celebrates the hotel’s partnership with Animal Samaritans animal shelter and the successful adoption of 86 dogs. “Through our partnership
with Animal Samaritans we host an adoptable dog in our lobby. The dogs live in a fancy dog house while they await the opportunity to find their forever home. Usually, that home is found within just a few days as these sweet pups and our guests interact,” said Tom Scaramellino, General Manager of the Westin Mission Hills. “We have been operating this program for a little more than two years and we are thrilled to host this annual reunion event.”
All dogs and their owners are invited to attend, with doggie-VIP status granted to dogs who were adopted through the Adopt-a-Pet program. By KMIR News Indio, CA - Chris Grebe of Indio, said WWE wrestler John Cena got him through his darkest days. In a viral commercial for Cricket Wireless, Grebe had the chance to meet Cena. “Dear john, you have heard it thousands of times, but you deserve to hear it a thousand more. Thank you. Never give up. Those words repeated in my head because you were my light in a decade of darkness,” said John Cena as he read a thank you letter from Grebe in the commercial. Grebe said Cena was a role model fore him. “He helped me through my dad, then he helped me through
my mom when I was 19. He helped me through being pretty much homeless when I was 20,” Grebe explained. He said Cena’s attitude changed his own. “Those words just kind of rang in me. The ‘never give up’ for a long time,” Grebe said. Grebe said Cena was unknowingly there for him when he needed it most. “John Cena was going for his first WWE title, and then my dad ended up passing away a week before,” Grebe said. At 19-years-old, Grebe lost his mother. “She ended up getting diagnosed with cancer on my birthday in 2009, and she passed away two
months later,” he said. But Cena’s motto pushed him through it all, and even inspired him to be a pro wrestler. Grebe got to personally thank Cena in the commercial. “Going out to say ‘Hi’ to him was like walking through this... time just slowed down, and everything you’ve ever went through builds up to this moment,” Grebe said about getting to meet his idol. He said getting to say thank you meant the world. “Find that thing that makes you say, ‘Okay its dark in here, but I’m going to get through it, and you’ll make it through it if you never give up,” Grebe said. Regal Beagle (whisky, peach schnapps and sweet and sour) or the Frisky Chihuahua (hotspiced Margarita). Four-legged partygoers will enjoy haute hound cuisine from the Patio Pooch Menu with nibbles like doggy Crudo, Canine Chicken Casserole and a sweet peanut butter and banana cookie. No bones about it, your pup will be begging for a doggy bag. The pooch pampering continues with Heavenly Dog Beds available for dogs to
use during the event, a photo booth so you and Fido can commemorate the event, and a special screening of a dog-themed movie. All dogs will receive a free dog toy. A representative from Animal Samaritans will speak at the event. Information on how you might adopt through The Westin will be available. Local canine-related vendors will round out the event with information booths about their goods and services.
Hand-Washing Crucial in Homes with Backyard Chickens
Many chickens that are sold at the local feed store come from large factory farms. (cdc.gov) By Desert Star Staff ANNAPOLIS, Md. Nearly 1,000 people across the country have become ill this year from salmonella
connected to backyard flocks of chickens, ducks and geese. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating 10 separate
By Desert Star Staff SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - It soon will no longer be OK in Illinois to charge women more than men for services such as dry cleaning and salon appointments. Legislation that increases transparency in pricing among some service providers and exposes genderbased price discrimination has been signed into law by Gov. Bruce Rauner. State Sen. Melinda Bush, D-Grayslake, said most folks assume that this type of discrimination would have disappeared by now, but it hasn’t. She said women have long been charged more for certain services - which doesn’t make it right. “Women pay more for dry cleaning, and you’ll also see it in some hair salons, where
women will pay more for the same services, and tailors,” she said. “So, it’s just trying to make sure that women do know what the prices are, so that they can ask, ‘Is there a reason for a price difference?’ “ Bush sponsored Senate Bill 298, which requires hair salons, barbers, dry cleaners and tailors to provide customers with a price list for services upon request. The law takes effect Jan. 1. Last year, the same senator’s “pink tax” legislation repealed state sales tax on feminine hygiene products. She said it’s another part of the effort to remove economic barriers for Illinois women. “My hope is that the law will make service providers take a second look at what they charge women,” she said,
salmonella outbreaks that have affected people in 48 states - including seven cases connected to poultry in Maryland this year.
CDC public health veterinarian Dr. Megin Nichols said the agency isn’t discouraging backyard agriculture or the benefits of learning to interact with animals, but preventing salmonella is a critical precaution. “There’s some simple things you can do to prevent it, which are really important,” she said. “So, whether you have poultry for food, eggs or as a pet, you have to be sure to wash your hands.” Other tips for people raising chickens, ducks or geese include making sure you change your shoes and clothes after cleaning their coops - and for those who keep them as pets, Nichols said birds shouldn’t come into contact with people’s faces. As the trend toward
organic food grows, Nichols said many people buy their own chickens because they believe they’re less likely to have salmonella and other germs. However, she noted, many of the birds for sale at the local feed store actually come from factory farms. “Just like the poultry in the grocery store, all live poultry can carry salmonella,” she said. “It’s in their guts and it doesn’t cause the birds to become sick. You can’t tell that a bird is carrying salmonella or other germs just by looking at it.” Signs of a salmonella infection in humans include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Many who contract salmonella just feel a little sick, but it can be a deadly illness for small children, older people and those with weakened immune systems.
New Law Targets Gender-Based Price Discrepancies
Studies have shown women pay more than men for services such as dry cleaning for comparable items. (cdc.gov) “because what women pay, you know, these are dollars that are coming out of our family.” Bush said gender inequity is a problem across the
country. In a study published in late 2015, New York City’s Department of Consumer Affairs compared nearly 800 products of more than 90 brands and
found, on average, products for women and girls cost sevenpercent more than similar products for men and boys. Source: Public-news Service
for those who are Muslims. Since the 2016 election campaign, incidents of bullying Muslim students have skyrocketed. In a survey by the Washington chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim Community Resource Center, more than 60 percent of Muslim students have said they’ve felt unsafe in public since 2016. Jasmin Samy, the CAIR civil rights director in Washington, said the group is working on a 2017 bullying report - and she knows the results are going to be “heartbreaking.” “We already have some numbers, and we can see how bad it is,” she said. “So, we’re at the stage where this is the time - you can’t just close your eyes and go do something else. If you’re not going to focus on this now, then it’s
useless. It’s not something that you can postpone.” Samy said Washington schools need to understand the magnitude of the problem. Last year, she went to districts across the state to talk about the basics of Islam, to help faculty and students understand the faith. Samy said schools need to learn how to be proactive and also react if an incident occurs. The word “heartbreaking” came up again as Nasarin Ahmed, a college access site coordinator at Kentlake High School, described some of the stories she’s heard from Muslim students. After informing staff that Ramadan was approaching, Ahmed herself was the target of anti-Islamic hate mail. In response, Kentlake launched training and also a Muslim student forum, where
kids shared their experiences with staff and teachers. “Just being in that environment and listening to your students firsthand, and not hearing it about another country or another state or another school that this has happened in - this happened in your own backyard, students that you’ve had or have right now - was really important for them,” Ahmed said. Samy said it’s also important for students who aren’t Muslim to stand up for their peers. “They need to speak up,” she said. “They need to stand for one another in general, and they need to feel that somebody has their back, and that other students care about them and really want to be there.”

Religious leaders shared their opinions on how to prevent what happened in Charlottesville from happening in the Coachella Valley “This is about the phenomenon of hatred in American society, and what do we do here in the Coachella Valley to keep things safe,” said Rabbi David Lazar with Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs. Lincoln said everyone agreed they need to be role

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio - The expression, “It takes a village to raise a child,” certainly rings true when it comes to infant sleep safety. Since 1994, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that babies sleep on their backs to avoid the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. However, a new survey shows that fewer than half of mothers are consistently following the recommendation - even though more than half say it’s a message they’re hearing from their doctors. Dr. Mike Gittelman, president-elect of the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said pointing fingers isn’t the solution. “The blame game never seems to work,” he said. “We have a problem: We have infant mortality and we have deaths to children. We need to stop that - and there are
ways to go about doing that, and that is to change the social norm. It’s to make sure that people are practicing the appropriate behaviors.” The research from the AAP suggested clear and consistent messaging from medical providers about the dangers of SIDS or suffocation when babies sleep on their stomachs or sides. It’s also recommended that parents insist that other caregivers support their safe-sleep practices. Safety education is an uphill battle for pediatricians, said Gittelman, as they compete with mixed parenting messages on the internet and old-school mentalities. “How many times have you heard, ‘When I was young, we had seven kids in the back of the station wagon, we didn’t have seat belts, we were bouncing all around, no one got hurt.’ Yeah, because you were lucky,” he said. “But if you were in a collision, you

It Takes a Village to Promote Infant Sleep Safety

New research suggests families, pediatricians and other medical providers work together to support safe infant sleep. (Caitlan Regan/Flickr) could have gotten seriously hurt, and now we know that seat belts significantly prevent the risk of injury and death.” Gittelman noted that 3,500 infant deaths a year are related to unsafe sleep in the United States. He advised parents to learn the risks and follow the best behaviors for their children’s health. “Whenever they interview a family after they’ve had an injury,” he said, “they say, ‘I
wish I knew this. Why didn’t anyone tell me?’ Well, we need to make sure everyone knows all of the risks, so they’re not the ones that are saying, ‘I wish this didn’t happen to me.’ “ Deaths from SIDS were cut in half over the past two decades, but it’s still a leading cause of infant mortality. Ohio’s infant mortality rate of more than 7 percent is higher than the national rate.

Shelter Dog Makeover Sheds Light on Animal Adoption
By Desert Star Staff STERLING, Ill., Aug. 22, 2017 -- Sissy came to her rescue so badly matted it was difficult to tell she was a dog. Her ears were matted to the side of her head, her chin was matted to her chest and her four paws were the size of boxing gloves. After a full eight hours of grooming, her true beauty was revealed and she was quickly adopted. Sissy’s dramatic transformation not only got her a second chance at life, but the title of America’s top shelter dog makeover in the 2017 Dirty Dogs Contest. The annual effort from pet industry leaders Wahl and GreaterGood. org demonstrates the power of grooming, and awards the top three dog makeovers with grant money for their local shelters. “Without proper grooming, shelter dogs are often perceived to be ‘damaged goods’ and overlooked by adoptive families,” says Shay Moeller, pet product manager for Wahl. “However, by providing shelters with much-needed grooming supplies, we can help in their
efforts to transform these dogs into the healthy, fun loving pets they really are. The end goal is for all dogs to find a forever family, just like Sissy did.” The story about “Sissy” Sissy is 12 years old and a Lhasa Apso so badly matted it was difficult to tell that she was a dog. She was one of five Lhasa’s that came to Suncoast Animal League in horrible condition. The five dogs came into Suncoasts Animal League’s possession at 12:30 am on February 23, 2017. I made the hour drive and arrived at 1:30 am at Island Dog Outfitters to begin grooming the dogs. The drive was not a pleasant one given the horrendous odor associated with the dogs. When it came time to start the grooming process on Sissy, it was difficult to figure out where to start. Her ears where matted to the side of her head. Her chin was matted to her chest and her face was so matted that her muzzle no longer fit into a bowl. Feces hung like dreadlocks to her backside and
her four paws were the size of boxing gloves. Her nails barely protruded through the matting and later on, we found them to be over four inches long. The matting over her eyes prevented her from seeing and we would later find out that the matting caused permanent damage to her eyes. Her teeth were wrapped with matted hair. Her body was entombed within the matted hair. The grooming that
KMIR Tyler Harrison Palm Springs, CA - Cold noses and warm hearts filled the Palm Springs Animal Shelter on Saturday as hundreds of locals looked for their next, “forever friend.” KMIR News along with NBCUniversal spearheaded the 3rd Annual “Clear The Shelters” pet adoption event. This nationwide event has helped save nearly 250,000 shelter animals over the past three years by matching them with a loving family. “We won’t have these pets
here tonight, they’ll all be resting in a nice bed,” said Daniel Sumner, Palm Springs Animal Shelter Director of Operations. “A lot of our dogs and cats they will adopt a human,” said Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon. Adoption fees at participating shelters was only $20 which helped make finding your new “best friend” a lot easier. It also allowed adopters to budget for a few extra toys and treats in the process. “We the like the ones that are the most cuddly and most friendly,” said Giorgio Barone
from Rancho Mirage. He and his sister, Stefani Barone, are new cat owners. “All animals need a home so its good to adopt animals cause they need a home,” said Giorgio. However, finding forever homes is sometimes easier said than done. “It’s not easy and its expensive and you see all the volunteers here, it takes a tremendous amount of work, people volunteering to make this all work, “ said Mayor Moon. This year’s event helped find 61 cats and 29 dogs a new home. Source: KMIR
began at 1:30 am and ended at 9:30 am, with all five dogs, who would come to be known as the Fab Five, being groomed. That same day, all five dogs were seen and examined by a veterinarian. It would begin a medical odyssey that would cost over $7,000 and end on April 2nd with Sissy and the other four Fab Five members, getting adopted at a “Lunch with the Lhasa’s”event. In
between, the Fab Five became FaceBook phenoms. Sissy is thriving in her new home and is getting the individual attention she so richly deserves. It goes without saying that Sissy would not have been adopted without being groomed but the truth of the matter is, she wouldn’t have survived without being groomed. Grooming freed her from her own body and provided her with a new life.

Something for Every Age Group on DVD
Nature’s Great Race
Where oh where has the summer gone? It seems like only yesterday when school let out for summer vacation. Now school is back in session, and the world has just experienced a total eclipse of the sun. With so much going on in our world, perhaps it’s time to chill out, relax and take time to enjoy some recent movie and TV titles now available on DVD. There are many choices on hand for every age group and here are a few suggestions. From PBS Masterpiece, there is “Prime Suspect Tennison.” This is the eagerly awaited prequel to “Prime Suspect,” a PBS hit that starred Dame Helen Mirren in the role of Jane Tennison, a formidable London police detective. In the prequel, this visuallystunning drama rewinds to 1970s London to portray the early career of Tennison, now played by Stefanie Martini At this point she is an ambitious, single-minded 22-year-old probationary officer. It is evident from the start that she is dedicated with an instinctive approach as she is thrown into a brutal murder investigation, witnessing first-hand the devastating effects of violent crime, as well as experiencing tragic ramifications herself. The show also immerses us in the music, fashion and politics that defined a generation. DVD’ bonus material includes: Cars of the 70s, Dressing the 70s, Hair of the 70s and Policing in the 70s. For the younger set, there’s “Room on the Broom” from PBS, a tale of a kind witch who invites a collection of animals www.desertstarweekly.com
to join her on her broom, which frustrates her cat. When she encounters a fierce and hungry dragon, her animal friends come to her rescue. To reward them, she gets a magnificent new broom with plenty of room for everyone. The animated film is based on the beloved children’s picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The characters are voiced by Gillian Anderson, Rob Brydon, Martin Clunes, Simon Pegg and Timothy Spall. Special features include: “Behind-the-Scenes the Scenes Documentary,” “Julia Donaldson Live Performance” and “Artwork Gallery.” Animal lovers of all ages will thrill to PBSs “Nature’s Great Race.” In this epic adventure, you get to follow three iconic animals—caribou, elephants and zebra—on three breathtaking wildlife adventures, journeying across hundreds of miles of Canadian arctic wilderness and African bush. As cameras follow individual animals every step of the way, you will witness their close calls, their successes and failures. You will also discover the true driving forces that compel them to risk everything. Approximately 180 minutes in length. For an animal thrill ride, there’s “Kong: Skull Island” from Warner Bros. This adventure is pure fantasy as an intrepid group head to the very mysterious Skull Island, not located on any map. Somehow John Goodman convinces the government to fund his mission against their better judgement. To help protect Goodman and his colleagues, he is provided
with a group of US soldiers who were scheduled to return stateside following the end of WW II. The small unit assigned to them is headed by Samuel L. Jackson. When they fly through the shrouded mist covering this uncharted island, they incur the wrath of the gigantic ape, Kong whose mission is to protect the animals on Skull island from any form of predator. Others in the cast include Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and John C. Reilly as a soldier whose plane crashed over the island at the beginning of the great war. To capture the primordial landscape of this island director Jordan VogtRoberts and his team filmed across three continents—Oahu, Hawaii, Australia’s Gold Coast and Vietnam— for six months in order to create Skull Island. As thing’s heat up, we and the

group, encounter all sorts of very large beasts under the protection of the mighty Kong. It is a fun thrill ride, but it would have been even more exciting if there had been a little less of Samuel L. Jackson’s character and more of the mighty Kong. The DVD is filled with added features, including “Creating a King: Realizing an Icon,” “On Location: Vietnam,” deleted scenes and more. Running time is 118 minutes. The film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action and for brief strong language. “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” debuted on Blu-ray and DVD on August 8th from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. In this tale, the child Arthur’s father is murdered by Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur’s uncle, who then seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and
with no idea of who he truly is, Arthur grows up the hard way, in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life changes drastically, and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy, whether he likes it or not. The Blu-ray Combo Pack contains many special features, including: “Arthur with Swagger.” Played by Charlie Hunnam, Arthur is a gentleman, a hunk and a rebel, setting new standards as king and brand new rules with the ladies. The combo pack also contains many other features, including “Parry and Bleed,” showing how Hunnam and cast members got a crash course in swordplay, Vikings vs Saxon’s style. Running time is 126 minutes. It is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, some suggestive content and brief strong language.

With Hours to Spare, Gov. Greitens Issues Stay of Execution
By Desert Star Staff JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Marcellus Williams was only a few hours from being executed Tuesday when Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens stepped in to issue a stay, citing new DNA evidence in Williams’ capital murder case. Williams was convicted in the 1998 stabbing death of former St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Felicia Gayle. Recently tested DNA on the knife cited as the murder weapon did not match Williams’ DNA, according to his attorneys. Tricia Bushnell, director of the Midwest Innocence Project, the group that wrote to the governor asking for the stay, described her current state of
mind as “pleased and grateful; that Gov. Greitens has both issued a stay and appointed a Board of Inquiry, is really showing a commitment to justice and to open process.” Williams, 48, was scheduled to die by lethal injection on Tuesday evening. State Attorney General Josh Hawley had argued that there was enough nonDNA evidence to uphold Williams’ conviction. Bushnell said there’s no clear indication how long it will take an advisory board to review the DNA evidence. The state’s case relied primarily on two witnesses she described as having incentive to believe they would
benefit by pointing a finger at Williams. Too often in murder cases, Bushnell said, finality is prioritized over fairness. “There is this myth that people get out on technicalities, but the reality is, technicalities keep people in,” she said. “You’re not even allowed to get into court. And as we saw here with Mr. Williams, he had this evidence and no one would even hear it.” In his stay order, the governor said simply, “To carry out the death penalty, the people of Missouri must have confidence in the judgment of guilt. In light of new information, I am appointing a Board of Inquiry in this case.”

Wireless Tips for Boomers
By Desert Star Staff There are currently more than 93 million Americans in the U.S. over age 55, according to Census data, and the vast majority (74 percent) of them have a smartphone. And that number keeps growing. In addition, Baby Boomers spend an average of 149 minutes a day on their smartphones -- about as much as smartphoneobsessed Millennials at
171 minutes per day. Despite these figures, and the fact that members of this generation were the inventors of the wireless industry, many mobile plans for Americans aged 55 plus are still designed for a time before the Internet. They come with limited minutes, and no data. “The fact is that many ‘senior’ plans offer limited services that only work with basic phones. This
doesn’t make sense for most of today’s modern, mobile adults,” says John Legere, CEO and president of T-Mobile. “Unfortunately, many carriers and plans treat these generations like they’re stuck in the past.” But even without the dumbed down “senior” plans, empty nesters aren’t given great options. When kids leave the house and are off the family plan, most major carriers raise
the per line cost by almost 60 percent, costing customers a hefty sum when it’s time to pay the bill each month. So how can you find the best deal for your needs? When looking for a plan, consider the following. • How many lines do you need? Virtually every wireless provider has a lower per line cost for four lines instead of two. So, if you only need two lines, look for a plan that won’t penalize you for not having four. • If you’re a frequent traveler -- whether it’s for business or pleasure -- ensure your wireless plan offers the perks you need to avoid sticker shock on your bills when you get home. T-Mobile ONE includes compelling perks for travelers – like an hour of free Gogo in-flight Internet on domestic flights and high-speed data in Mexico and Canada, and data and texting from 140 countries and destinations around the world. It’s a good choice for those on-the-go. • How much do you use your mobile phone? Be honest with the number of minutes you spend making calls and the
amount of data you use. Lately, unlimited plans have become incredibly affordable and popular again. If you don’t want to ever have to worry about your data use, it may be time to take advantage of these deals and switch to an unlimited plan. Consider new options like the recently launched T-Mobile ONE Unlimited 55+, which is designed specifically for today’s modern mobile adults. For just $60 a month, with taxes and fees included in the price, those who are 55 and older can get T-Mobile ONE, with unlimited talk, text and 4G LTE data, as well as the already mentioned other perks. It also comes with the ability to use your number on other compatible phones, tablets and PCs. It’s limited to those aged 55 and older, so bring your ID when you go to sign up. To learn more, visit t-mobile.com/unlimited55. Being over 55 doesn’t mean you have to compromise on your wireless plan, so do your research and find a plan that offers you everything you really need to stay connected at the best price. StatePoint
