Comic-Con Story and Photos by Pat Krause A record number of fans arrived at the Palm Springs Convention Center for this second year of Comic-Con Palm Springs. The initial day was Friday where VIP fans were allowed access first at 1:00. General admission people were standing in line to enter at

2:00. A lot of the people came dressed as their favorite comic book character. The vendor area was a lot bigger than last year with a huge variety of items for sale. Symphony Pop Live created music on Friday and Sunday. Tom Kenny and the Hi-Seas performed at the Spa Resort Casino. Many

local businesses have gotten involved in this special weekend with events of their own. You could get any number of comics-old and new, cards, figures, jewelry, fake tattoos, apparel and much more. There were rows and rows of vendors. Some of the booths held the artists who created

Desert Star Weekly News Staff Hurricane Harvey, accompanied by flash floods and severe storms, barrels along the coast of Texas, causing damage almost comparable to Hurricane Katrina of 2005. Authorities urge Texans to evacuate the coastal areas. Houston police arrested three people on a suspected robbery crew on Monday night, Chief Art Acevedo told reporters. All police officers are on duty and working around the clock to keep order. The number of people rescued from the floods has grown to 3,500, Acevedo added. One Texas family is threatening to shoot anyone who tries to loot their hurricane-damaged home, WFAA-TV reported. Residents of Portland, just

across the bay from Corpus Christi, put up a “You loot, I shoot” sign in their front yard. “When you have people that have lost everything, you need food, you need clothes, people get desperate and you go into that kind of mindset,” a woman who lives in the house told WFAA. Several neighbors said they agreed with the sentiment. “If someone breaks into my house, they’re asking for it,” one resident said. Four children and their greatgrandparents were among the 14 people who have died in Texas trying to escape the floodwaters produced by Hurricane Harvey. “The 14 reported dead include a family of six who were lost when

their van sunk after crossing a bridge and hitting high water,” Harris County sheriff’s office said. The youngest in the family was six years old. The Coast Guard told their relatives that they couldn’t search for the bodies until the water recedes. Texas officials fear that the death toll from Harvey is likely to rise, the Austin AmericanStatesman reported. Brazoria County officials are urging everyone near the Columbia Lakes – south of Houston, Texas – to evacuate immediately, after the levees on the Brazos River broke. Lynda Carter Comic-Con Concert in Palm Springs

Lynda Carter, the original Wonder Woman, gave her first concert at the Comic-Con Story and Photos by Pat Krause The concert required a separate ticket as it was not a part of the regular events. Many people bought an extra ticket, so they would be able to take a photo with her and get an autograph. Wonder Woman fans probably didn’t know this lady has an incredible voice. She has a large range and can sing all genres of music. DooWop,Soul, Rock, some Hard-rock styles and Country. She is also a song writer. The audience was standing when she sang, I Love Rock and Roll, and Let The Good Times Roll.

The audience was thrilled with her performance and those that did not attend missed a great concert. Of course, she is as beautiful now as when she played Wonder Woman. Carter commented that all the musicians in her band are celebrities in their own right. Many are Grammy winners and are in high demand. This was shown during her songs where they had solo performances. The drum solo had people standing and clapping. There were two drummers, Saxon player, bass and guitar, keyboardist and 3 very talented Lynda Carters daughter, Jessica Altman and Lynda Carter sing together -Photo Pat Krause backup singers in her concert. Carter even had an interpreter for the deaf on stage. Lynda said she, and her friend wrote a special song and would sing it to her husband of 33 years. The lyrics to this song are the kind everyone could sing to their spouse or loved one. The song, After All These Years, was one of my favorites in her concert. Carter brought her daughter Jessica on stage to sing with her. Carter said that when her daughter was young, she would cover her, Carters, mouth and say; I am singing now. Carter also said she wouldn’t tell any stories about being Wonder Woman and then relented. She told the helicopter story where she ended up hanging from a helicopter in one the Wonder Woman episode saying it was really her.

The convenience of e-mail is also its temptation. Be disciplined, and save discussion for the board meeting. Best regards, Kelly Dear Kelly: Our Board has five directors, and committees have two board members and one homeowner. Committees do not submit written minutes but sometimes make a verbal report at board meetings. My impression is that these committees do not “meet” but that the board members (and occasionally the third member) phone or email each other about anything that comes up. Without any written record or even verbal report it is impossible to determine what is happening. Are these committees required to have open meetings or report actions to the Board? J. S., Coronado Dear J.S.: If the committee includes no more than two directors, a committee meeting is

not a “meeting” under Civil Code 4090, which defines a “meeting” as a quorum of the board meeting to discuss anything within the board’s authority. If it is not a “meeting,” the Open Meeting Act does not apply. However, if a third director attends a committee meeting, it may be argued to have become a “meeting,” triggering the Open Meeting Act requirements, since a quorum of the board is then present. Committees are not typically required to keep minutes, because their meetings usually result in reports or recommendations directed to the board (except for the Architectural Committee, which decisions are appealable to the board under Civil Code 4765(a) (4)). Their minutes, if they exist, are not “association records” subject to member inspection. However, committees established by the board and consisting solely of directors (under Corporations Code 7212) must keep minutes

which must be made available for member inspection under Civil Code 5200(a) (8). The committees you describe do not fall under Corporations Code 7212, since they have non-directors serving with directors. Committees are a great place to increase homeowner involvement and identify potential future directors. If your committees consist mainly of directors, they are not helping the board - get some more volunteers. Hoping this helps, Kelly.

An Ideal Investment for your Short-Term Pocket of Money By Janice Gough

Before structuring a financial plan an advisor must determine what their client’s short term, medium term and long term money pockets are. You must keep a portion of your portfolio to use in case of an emergency or short term goal. The amount in the short- term pocket should be proportionate to your wealth and spending. Many people leave too much in their short- term pocket and receive no working capital on that bucket of money. Until recently there were no good investments which paid a reasonable rate of return on that bucket of money. Most investments, even a CD, requires a longer commitment to get a decent return, and a larger investment. A Five-year CD will only produce a 2.30% and require a much larger investment of $100,000. The First Position mortgage product only requires a $25,000 minimum investment. Keep in mind that this bucket of money must be safe and have a shortterm horizon so you can get your money back in a brief time frame. This One year commitment product pays 5 percent annually and provides an immediate income stream. The type of investment company who can offer this product is a company who provides large real estate commercial loans and places you on title in the First position. This means that you have priority over any other liens

DOE Electric Grid Study Called Flawed

The report recommends the U.S. EPA ease permitting requirements for new investments in coalfired plants. (PublicDomainPictures/Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff August 25, 2017 NEW YORK – The U.S. Department of Energy has released its study of the electric grid’s reliability, but some environmental groups maintain it isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.

The study concludes that cheap natural gas is the main reason for the decline of coal and nuclear power. But according to Kim Smaczniak, a clean energy attorney with the environmental law firm Earthjustice, the final version

of the report waters down key conclusions about the role of environmental regulations seen in an earlier draft. And she says it adds recommendations to ease permits for coal power plants and safety requirements for nuclear power, and change

By Desert Star Staff Sebastian Gorka is no longer a deputy assistant on counterterrorism to President Donald Trump. Gorka reportedly resigned over concerns that staffers who truly wanted to “make America great again” were being “undermined” amid infighting in the White House. On Friday, Deputy Assistant Sebastian Gorka resigned his position at the White House. Gorka wrote a resignation letter explaining disagreements with his colleagues in the Trump administration.“[G]iven recent events, it is clear to me that forces that do not support the MAGA promise are – for now – ascendant within the White House,” Gorka wrote, the Federalist reported. “As a result, the best and most effective way I can support you, Mr. President, is from outside the People’s House.” Gorka’s main duties at the White House included serving as a counterterrorism advisor to Trump and

supporting the drafting of a new long-term national security strategy. However, Gorka reportedly had problems obtaining a security clearance, according to The Hill. An unnamed official at the White House pushed back against reports that Gorka resigned when asked for a confirmation on the nature of the departure. “Sebastian Gorka did not resign, but I can confirm he no longer works at the White House,” he said, The Hill reported. In his first 30 days as the president’s newly minted chief of staff, General John Kelly also removed Trump’s chief strategist, Steve Bannon, and Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci. Scaramucci emerged from the ashes of a short-lived tenure in DC to claim there is an effort by the establishment to remove Trump from the White House due to his antiestablishment ideals.Gorka used to contribute as a writer for the right-leaning Breitbart

News. Bannon, who served as Executive Chairman for Breitbart while Gorka was employed there, also left the White House with ill will toward his colleagues. It is said the two were closely aligned in the White House. There had been speculation in DC after Bannon allegedly resigned a week ago, that Gorka would be next. The deputy advisor pulled no punches in his resignation letter. He was angered that the president did not mention the phrases “radical Islam” and “radical Islamic terrorism” in his August 21 foreign policy speech outlining the next steps in the Afghanistan war. “Regrettably, outside of yourself, the individuals who most embodied and represented the policies that will ‘Make America Great Again,’ have been internally countered, systematically removed, or undermined in recent months. This was made patently obvious as I read the text of your speech on Afghanistan this week,” Gorka wrote, according to the Federalist. “The fact that those who drafted and approved the speech removed any mention of Radical Islam or radical Islamic terrorism proves that a crucial element of your presidential campaign has been lost.”

how customers pay for power from older, less-efficient plants. “Those are the findings that we see in the study that really aren’t backed up, and they’re findings that we didn’t see in the original version,” she states. The coal and nuclear energy industries say the report confirms that the power they generate is critical to maintaining a reliable and resilient electric grid. But Smaczniak points out what she calls a glaring omission – the report mentions “extreme weather,” but leaves out any mention of climate change. “You can’t really talk about the long term reliability and resiliency of the grid without taking into account that the climate is changing, and that we really need to have responses that are putting on more and more clean energy,” she stresses.

Smaczniak adds that ignoring climate change will make the electric grid more vulnerable to the next Super Storm Sandy that left millions without electricity. When Energy Secretary Rick Perry called for the study in April, environmental groups feared it would ignore science and recommend bailouts of the coal and nuclear industries. Smaczniak notes the final version falls well short of that. “Instead, they’ve found a lot of ways to try to move toward a more subtle shift that would compensate some of this base load, in ways that are just not warranted,” she states. Smaczniak adds that many states have taken their own lead in developing and implementing clean energy plans to provide power that is reliable and affordable.

father who had fought against communism, according to The Hill.As Trump’s allies from the beginning days of his presidency have dwindled, a few holdovers from the administration of former President Barack Obama were also given the axe in the early stages of Trump’s administration. Just 10 days in, Acting Attorney General Sally Yates was given the boot by the president for refusing to enact his controversial travel ban against seven Muslimmajority countries. Then, two months later, Trump gave 46 US attorneys their walking papers. The firing of

FBI Director James Comey followed soon after in May. Comey stated that President Donald Trump had tried to get him to drop an investigation into former White House national security advisor Michael Flynn for the former general’s alleged contacts with Russia and other governments. Flynn was ultimately forced into resignation after he “inadvertently briefed the Vice President-elect and others with incomplete information regarding his phone calls with the Russian Ambassador,” according to his resignation letter.

Peaceful Rallies to Counter CA Right-Wing Protests

By Desert Star Staff BERKELEY, Calif. – Thousands of people are expected at anti-hate counter protests this weekend in San Francisco and Berkeley, aimed at drowning out the messages of right wing rallies nearby. Large events denouncing racism are planned Saturday at Ocean Beach, and Sunday at Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco – with another on Sunday near the UC Berkeley campus. Cathy Campbell, president of the Berkeley Federation of Teachers, is helping to organize the East Bay event to peacefully protest groups she says have come out of the shadows to promote hate and intolerance. “These groups feel empowered,” she states. “That is largely a result of our president. They see support

and they feel emboldened. “And the best response is for people of good faith to come out and show that they are not the values of the majority of people.” A group that calls itself Patriot Prayer is hosting a rally on Saturday near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Another group is planning a Sunday event called “No to Marxism in America” at Civic Center Park in Berkeley, featuring speakers who were associated with violent protests in that city a few months ago. Authorities in both cities are taking measures to keep the two sides apart. Berkeley High School teacher Matt Meyer says the Berkeley Rally Against Hate will be peaceful, but rally organizers will have 50 trained medics standing by in case of trouble.

Groups from the Berkeley Women’s March will reunite this Sunday at an event to counter right-wing rallies. (Berkeley Teacher’s Union) “People in the Berkeley community and the greater East Bay can come out and let their voices be heard and rally together – that we’re not going to be complacent, that we are

going to stand up and say, ‘This is not the society that we want to live in,’” Meyer states. Multiple, separate peaceful counter protests in solidarity with the Bay area events are

planned for this weekend, including one in Fresno on Saturday, and another on Sunday in San Diego.

By Desert Star Staff Fallout from clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters on August 12 in Charlottesville, Virginia heightened hostilities around Confederate symbols – specifically whether statues to Civil War era figures such as General Robert E. Lee have a place in the public domain. It has resulted in certain statues being defaced and one group of activists tearing down a Confederate soldier statue in Durham, North Carolina, to the dismay of President Trump. But while racial and political tensions continue to bubble, the disharmony appears to have

done the coffers of Alabama Flag & Banner no harm. The company, which boasts its involvement in raising the highest flagpole in south-east America, states that it has recently received an “overwhelming amount of orders.” Due to the surge, the firm has had to reroute orders to a different website, and they warn customers that Confederate flags could take up to three weeks to be delivered. Alabama Flag & Banner owner Belinda Kennedy told RT.com that flag sales have been buoyed by those opposing the removal of

Confederate monuments, saying that sales are coming from “all 50 states and several different countries.” “My seamstresses do not ordinarily work weekends but they are working now [Saturday],” Kennedy said. “The comments I hear from customers coming into our store, over the phone or email are [that they] buy flags in order to offset the small minority who are demanding the removal of monuments.” Kennedy also said people calling for the removal of monuments are “trying to revise history.”

Native Women’s Walk for Missouri River Reaches ND

By Desert Star Staff BISMARCK, N.D. – Native American women are walking along the Missouri River to raise awareness for honoring and protecting it. They’re expected to pass through the Standing Rock Indian Reservation Friday. Since their journey started in Montana a little more than three weeks ago, the women have walked more than 600 miles, joined by other Native Americans and members of the public. River walker Lori Watso says Standing Rock is an important part of the walk. She says the protests there last year got her thinking about water as a finite resource. “When people came together at Standing Rock, it was very important that that happened, and it kind of put a fire, if you will, under people,” she relates. “But the really important question www.desertstarweekly.com

is, ‘What are you going to do when you get home?’” The women will be walking to the river’s confluence with the Mississippi River in Missouri. The walk is open to the public, and people who want to join can track the route at NIBIWalk.org, where there’s a geo-location tag at the top of the page. In the past, the water walkers have followed the St. Louis River in Minnesota, the Ohio River and others. Sharon Day, who heads the Indigenous People’s Task Force, says the walk is infused with positivity. While the women want to make sure the river is protected, Day says it also has a deeper spiritual meaning. “The purpose of the walk is to pray for the water, to tell the water we respect the water, we are appreciative of the water and indeed, that we love the water,” she states. The women say the

Mattis to implement transgender ban in military By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump officially ordered a ban on transgender troops in the US military, tasking Defense Secretary James Mattis with implementing a replacement policy. Already a legal challenge is emerging, as the ACLU vowed, “We’ll see you in court.”In one of the last acts of the Obama administration, a de facto ban on transgender people openly serving in the US military was ended. The policy change would go into effect July 1, 2017, and also authorized the Department of Defense as well as the Department of Homeland Security to fund sex-reassignment surgery. That July 1 deadline was extended to January 1, 2018 earlier this summer, but now implementation of the Obama-era policy change is being put off indefinitely, as a replacement policy is written in the meantime. “In my judgment,” Trump wrote in the Friday

memo to the secretaries of the Defense and Homeland Security departments, “the previous Administration failed to identify a sufficient basis to conclude that terminating the Departments’ longstanding policy and practice would not hinder military effectiveness and lethality, disrupt unit cohesion, or tax military resources, and there remain meaningful concerns that further study is needed to ensure that continued implementation of last year’s policy change would not have those negative effects.”Until a new policy is prepared for Trump, the US military and Department of Homeland Security will operate as they did pre-June 2016. However, currently enlisted transgender troops may not be impacted, it seems. An anonymous White House official told the Associated Press that currently serving transgender individuals would be dealt with depending on many factors, including

Western North Carolina Community Health Services has received a $10,000 grant from the Campaign for Southern Equality to expand medical services to the LGBTQ community. (justgrimes/Flickr) their “military effectiveness,” budgetary constraints and “unit cohesion,” or any factor Mattis considers “relevant.”

Trump’s memo calls for a “halt” on all sex reassignment surgery funding, “except to the extent necessary

to protect the health of an individual who has already begun a course of treatment to reassign his or her sex.”

Ricardo Guzman, board chairman of the National Association of Community Health Centers, says this system expanded significantly under the Affordable Care Act - and now that funding is about to expire. “The federal government estimates that 50,000 clinicians and other staff will lose their jobs, and most importantly, 9 million patients will lose access to care,” he warns. “That’s access denied.” President Trump’s budget proposal does include $3.6 billion to fund health centers - which is the same amount they got via a continuing resolution two years ago. But many clinic administrators say they hope Congress will stop kicking the can down the road and include a five-year funding

deal in the federal budget. Guzman says he’s also troubled by the fact that the GOP continues to support massive cuts to Medicaid as part of their health-care plan. “A lot of the lifeblood for community health centers comes out of Medicaid,” he adds. “And if there’s certain cuts to Medicaid or it gets block granted, that could be a big problem for us.” By law, community health centers are required to treat any patient who walks through the doors, regardless of ability to pay. The clinics often provide a one-stop shop for primary care, dental care and behavioral health in severely underserved areas.

Advocates Press Congress to Renew Community Health Center Funding

By Desert Star Staff August 27, 2017 SAN DIEGO, Calif. – If Congress doesn’t act by September 30 - the nation’s nearly 1,300 community

health centers will lose 70 percent of their funding. This issue will be front and center for thousands of patients, providers and advocates at the annual

Community Health Institute and Expo, which starts today in San Diego. New data show that community health centers now serve 27 million mostly low-income Americans.

By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. – A personal finance website ranks Minnesota’s Leech Lake Tribal College in Cass Lake the number one community college in the nation for overall quality. WalletHub looked at price, faculty-student ratio and graduation rates among other factors in its rankings of 728 schools. In Minnesota, most community colleges, including Leech Lake, cost a little more than $5,000 a year for full-time students.

Pat Broker, Leech Lake’s interim president, says the school stands out because of its “family feel” – its ability to be both a safe haven and a launching pad for students. “They can come and build strong relationships in this very stimulating environment, whereby we present a number of opportunities for them to explore as they make decisions about their life on into the future,” she states. The college was established by the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and has campuses in Cass

Lake and Red Lake. Broker says although the school is rooted in Anishinaabe values, almost 10 percent of Leech Lake’s 350 students are not Native American. Cecilia Damian, a student at Inver Hills Community College and vice-president of LeadMN, the official student voice of the Minnesota State colleges, says while it’s nice to see a top ranking for any school in the state, students don’t pay much attention to rankings. “We’re looking for the

Feds Declare Sand to Snow National Monument Safe

By Desert Star Staff JOSHUA TREE, Calif. -- Sand to Snow National Monument in the southern California desert will not be reduced or rescinded, U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced on Wednesday. Six other national monuments in California and dozens of others around the country remain in the crosshairs - until Zinke’s final recommendations are made public on August 24. Daniel Rossman, acting state director for The Wilderness Society, said he’s glad Sand to Snow was spared, and hopes to see the same result for places such as the Berryessa Snow Mountain, Mojave Trails, Giant Sequoia, San Gabriel Mountains, Carrizo Plain and Cascade-Siskiyou national monuments. “There have been more than 2.7 million comments

put into this process for preserving the status of our national monuments,” Rossman said. “It seems arbitrary that the Secretary is releasing monuments here and there, and not listening to the overwhelming will of the American public.” Danielle Segura, executive director of the Mojave Desert Land Trust, said she wants to see Mojave Trails protected. But she said its fate is in question because Zinke’s number two at the Department of the Interior is a former lobbyist for a company that wants to drain water from the desert aquifer and send it to coastal cities. “I think that we have reasons to be worried about that. We would like to see the desert as a place not to extract resources, but to allow for a vibrant tourism economy,” Segura said.

Sand to Snow National Monument was created alongside two other desert monuments in 2016 by President Barack Obama. State Assemblywoman Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, who represents the area near Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, said she consulted with local groups for many years before President Barack Obama designated the monument in 2016. “I worked with cattle ranchers, farmers, horseback associations, off-road vehicle associations, The Wilderness Society, the

Sierra Club. We worked with everyone to make sure we had ample public outreach, that people understood what the importance is to save this beautiful area,” Aguilar-Curry said. President Donald Trump had called for the review of the monuments to establish the smallest boundaries consistent with the protection of natural treasures.

Focuses on Positive Approaches to Juvenile Justice

By Desert Star Staff The annual Racial and Ethnic Fairness Conference is taking place in Sioux Falls today, addressing disparities in the juvenile justice system and how to better treat youth in the system. The keynote speaker is retired professor Doctor Martin Brokenleg, who is speaking about the trauma Native Americans have endured across generations. In South Dakota, Native Americans make up nearly 30 percent of the jail and prison population, but are only about 10 percent of the state’s population, according to the Prison Policy Initiative. Brokenleg says the current punitive system is an ineffective way to address crime and racial trauma. “Whether that’s a parent punishing a child, or a classroom teacher punishing a student, or society punishing a wrongdoer,” he says. “It’s the least effective thing you can do for them and for society. There are strategies that are much more effective.” Brokenleg has conducted

research into more effective means for serving youth in the juvenile justice system. He and his fellow researchers have four themes to their work: belonging, mastery, independence and generosity. These make up what he calls the “circle of courage,” a way of building resilient young people who can flourish in the face of adversity. Brokenleg says there are a hundred years of research and thousands of

years of Native American culture showing that positive approaches work better than punishment for youth. “It will help us move toward the ideals that we always say we hold up as an American people,” he adds. “We want people to be independent, to have happy lives, to certainly be in search of happiness. And resiliency strategies and positive approaches to youth are the clear path to

getting to those goals.” The conference is at Augustana University, where Brokenleg taught for 30 years before retiring. Other speakers will discuss data’s role in addressing racial disparities in the juvenile justice system, the Muslim experience in the system, and trauma-informed schools, which provide approaches for teaching students who have experienced traumatic events.

By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the first time in state history, Florida is scheduled to execute a white man for killing a black person. Mark James Asay’s death warrant schedules his execution for six o-clock this evening. Asay was convicted by a jury for two raciallymotivated and premeditated murders in Jacksonville in 1987. Barring a stay, it will be Florida’s first execution

since the U.S. Supreme Court halted the practice in the state more than 18 months ago. Death penalty opponent Mark Elliott with Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty says the criminal justice system isn’t fair. “Ordering the execution of Mark Asay, who is a white person, that one of his victims was black doesn’t change the history, doesn’t change the reality of the death penalty and how it’s applied, and who it’s

applied against,” he explains. Since Florida reinstated the death penalty in 1976, at least 20 black men charged with killing white victims have been executed, according to data from the Death Penalty Information Center. Florida also plans to use for the first time a drug called Etomidate and potassium acetate in its execution cocktail. Elliott argues that life in prison is a better alternative to a death sentence, considering

the state’s track record. “We’ve had 27 people released off of Florida’s death row due to wrongful convictions,” he adds. “That’s far more than any other state - so, we make more mistakes than any other state.” Asay would be the 24th person executed since Gov. Rick Scott has taken office, the most under any governor in Florida history.

Research has shown that positive approaches to youth crime are more effective than punitive measures such as prison at treating kids. (State Farm/Flickr)

HOROSCOPES ARIES

ARIES: Visiting both the past and future you’re encouraged to be more spontaneous and radical than usual. You want everything to be new again. Off you go to places unfamiliar and unusual, where curious things occur and friends appear and communication happens and travel (short distance), too, and then you become more creative and this stays around for a while. Then the tests appear. Stay attuned.

TAURUS TAURUS: Often you don’t know where your money is, where it’s coming from or when, and you think you should be more careful and for a moment you are (with money, finances, resources). And really you have more than you think but you’re holding onto things that could be used for other purposes. You talk some about money. But usually you’re silent. That’s lonely. Your relationship needs tending, too.

GEMINI GEMINI: Usually you speak in paradox displaying duality, in humorous metaphors and sometimes people don’t understand you, your message (its meaning) or your humor. Many don’t know you. During and after Mercury retrograde times something different occurs. Your heart opens. We hear you speaking heart-felt words - what you

love and need, how you feel, whom you’re missing. It’s only for a moment. So, we’re listening carefully.

CANCER CANCER: This is either a time of spiritual insights and midnight dreams or days of confusion, bewilderment, puzzlement, mystification and uncertainty. Consider both as interesting, the latter more uncomfortable yet providing great insights. Help family to organize their lives so they better navigate their future. No matter the circumstances you’ve always been “good enough” (excellent) parent.

LEO LEO: It’s important to acknowledge your intelligence & intuition. It’s important to join with others who see your brilliant gifts, vast array of knowledge, collected and experienced over years. It’s important to be recognized for your care of the kingdoms (land, soil, minerals, plants, animals, bees, humans, angels). When you give of yourself to others, more resources and gifts become available. Venus enters your sign. Love happens.

VIRGO VIRGO: Your life becomes both internally and externally busy. You need energy to meet demands made by Mars and Mercury, your ruler. Self-reliance, self-confidence

and personal achievements will emerge in the coming weeks. Revelations appear if you identify yourself with the qualities of Ceres, the harvest maiden, tending to nature, planting bitter greens (parsley, kale & arugula) and chrysanthemums. Preparing now for autumn.

LIBRA LIBRA: It’s a good time to consider the quality of your spiritual life. And how to be more caring and nurturing at work. Many variables show up in your work world, this and that, here and there. Visualize yourself confident and poised in the middle of all work realities. You may encounter a past situation. Be ethical at work; allow nothing to interfere with this. At home, it’s important for health reasons to rest more. In relationship, be the eternal flame.

SCORPIO SCORPIO: So often you wonder what your goals are, what you would like in the future, what friends would be good for you, and what objectives you want accomplished in the near future. Whenever there’s an opportunity to be with others step into that group, radiate your special mysterious charm and see what occurs. Whatever you desire eventually appears. It’s an interesting Scorpio situation. For best results,

discern between wants and needs beforehand.

SAGITTARIUS SAGITTARIUS: Professionally you’ve been completing previous agendas and plans. So often, with Saturn in Sag, you have felt restricted, seeing no open road ahead. Other times, joy and elated. Now a new impulse of energy comes forth. You may be asked to accomplish special tasks, something important is offered or appears. Do not allow any power plays to be acted out. Don’t play the game. Be inspired by beauty instead. By travel, new vistas. A dream.

CAPRICORN CAPRICORN: Consider new creative projects and travel to unusual places. There has been great emphasis on home and daily life, gathering family together, planning dinners and outings, preparing loved ones to step into the world. You’re good at educating and enlightening others. You want different experiences now. Remember, you’re in a state of transformation. Prepare your Halloween garden.

AQUARIUS

Know that all will be well if you are careful, buying only what is needed. Travel is needed Tithing, too, is important. When we give, it’s returned to us tenfold.

PISCES PISCES: Multiple events occur; upheavals, windfalls, joy, disappointment, stability, instability, wounds hurting and healing. You may be upset when remembering past actions. Relationships feel conflictual, partners having different needs. Both sides are equal. Both have equal needs. Like a rainstorm, conflict cleanses and clears the air. Harmony emerging after conflict. You must choose to see both sides. It takes courage. AQUARIUS: Pleasure, happiness and fun are important, especially with friends and relationships. You know everyone, everyone knows you - everyone’s an acquaintance. That’s the Aquarian task, to know all of humanity. There may be a concern about money.

Trump pardons ex-sheriff Joe Arpaio By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump has pardoned former Maricopa County, Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was awaiting sentencing after being convicted of contempt for targeting illegal immigrants.A Friday evening statement from the White House said, “Today, President Donald J. Trump granted a Presidential pardon to Joe Arpaio, former Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona.”The statement lauded Arpaio’s public service, including his military enlistment after the outbreak of the Korean War, and concluded: “Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now eighty-five years old, and after more than fifty years of admirable service to our Nation, he is worthy candidate for a Presidential pardon.” Arpaio was convicted

of misdemeanor criminal contempt, which carries a maximum six-month prison sentence. He was due to be sentenced in October. Arpaio acknowledged disobeying US District Judge Murray Snow’s order to stop targeting immigrants, but Arpaio said it was not his intention to violate the judge’s order. “I’m very appreciative of what the president has done,” Arpaio told NBC News. “Right now, I have to thank the president for standing by me and standing by law enforcement. And I’m very humbled.” The pardon was condemned by the American Civil Liberties Union, which tweeted: “President Trump has chosen lawlessness over justice, division over unity, hurt

over healing.”There is no constitutional restriction on a president’s power to pardon, save for impeachment cases. Still, so-called “political pardons,” especially highprofile ones, almost never occur without embroiling controversy. Critics of this pardon of Arpaio point out that it did not go through the ordinary Department of Justice process, which is a complicated one, and the department’s pardon office has not yet been appointed a leader under Trump.Arpaio and Trump are longtime political allies, even before Trump entered politics. They aligned on the “birther” issue, which called into question former August 30, 2017

President Barack Obama’s legitimacy to hold the office. In July 2012, during Obama’s reelection campaign, Trump tweeted a congratulatory message to Arpaio for his Cold Case Posse investigation into Obama’s birth certificate, which they alleged was fake. Arpaio spoke at the 2016 Republican National

Convention and championed Trump’s campaign, especially on the issue of illegal immigration enforcement. I am pleased to inform you that I have just granted a full Pardon to 85 year old American patriot Sheriff Joe Arpaio. He kept Arizona safe! 7:00 PM - Aug 25, 2017

Providing Support F

inding out that someone you care about has breast cancer can be devastating. It is a natural impulse to want to offer support to help alleviate the stress or burden on your loved one.

But what do you say? What do they need?

BE SPECIFIC While you might be willing to do anything that will help your friend or family member during this difficult time, it is important to offer specific aid. Keep in mind that the afflicted person is likely receiving multiple offers of assistance from a variety of people. She is probably feeling alone and scared, and not sure who she can count on. Instead of asking a blanket, “Is there anything you need?” or “Let me know what I can do to help,” suggest a clear measure of support that you are willing to perform — and follow through on. Here are a few tips to get you started:

TRANSPORTATION Having breast cancer is an exhausting process filled with all types of medical treatments and hospital stays. Getting to and from treatment centers is

often painful and tedious. Offering to give your loved one a ride or pick him up is appreciated by him and his family members, who are most likely juggling the task.

HOUSEHOLD CHORES Day-to-day life can be taxing

on someone who is fit and healthy. Imagine what it must be like when your body is fighting off disease and routinely filled with medical therapies. While offering to do laundry, drop off dinner or mow the lawn might seem like a small gesture to you, it could feel life

changing to someone with breast cancer.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT Not everyone is great at listening — at really hearing people. People who are struggling with breast cancer are often in need of a supportive ear. Be a

caring friend, and listen to whatever your loved one needs to say. Don’t forget to reciprocate. Share your own feelings honestly. Just make sure you’re clear on the level of discretion your loved one wishes to maintain, to respect her privacy.

Economic Analyst: OR Tax ‘Kicker’ Will Kick Underfunded Schools By Desert Star Staff Kindergarten is an exciting time for children, but it can also be a stressful time of change -- not just for little ones, but for parents, too. Although each child is unique and develops at his or her own pace, most educators and experts agree that four key areas of development are essential for further growth and achievement in school. To help your child prepare for kindergarten and make a smooth transition, here are a few ways to support these key areas of development at home: • Vocabulary and Oral Language Development: Encourage your child to communicate through words. Have your child tell you a story, asking questions that invite description. For example, if your child says a dog was chasing a stick, ask what color was the dog? Did he run fast or slowly? Was the stick big or small? In public, give your child opportunities to speak for him www.desertstarweekly.com

or herself or make requests. If he or she is asked what they want to eat and drink at a restaurant, let your child reply, even if you know the answer. • Social-Emotional Skills: Children will use socialemotional skills every day once in kindergarten, whether they’re asking a teacher for help, being polite to classmates or following instructions. Scheduling a fun, unstructured play date is a great way to let children interact with peers, helping them learn to share and express themselves through play. • Small Motor Control: Developing small motor skills can be as easy as coloring with your child and cutting with scissors -- anything that gets those fingers and toes moving! Other great activities include putting puzzles together, building with blocks, throwing, catching and kicking a ball, riding a tricycle as well as activities like running, jumping and climbing. • Attention to Sensory and

Visual Detail: Paying attention to one’s senses is a mindful practice that can help prepare children for the academic world of kindergarten. Noticing textures, smells and tastes, and using language to describe these details, fosters vocabulary development and encourages children to compare and contrast their experiences. At snack time, ask your child to describe the food with words like sweet or sour, crunchy or juicy, rough or smooth. When playing with puzzles, ask your child to sort the puzzle pieces and then describe what colors, patterns, edges, or other visual details the pieces share. Parents may find certain tools useful towards helping children learn core school and life skills. For example, LeapFrog’s LeapStart Learning System gets kids excited about counting, learning to read, problem solving and more with fun, re-playable activities. An ergonomic stylus August 30, 2017

The interior of one of Kilkenny Castle’s many opulent rooms. Photo Beverly Cohn next, Tanya would regale us with interesting factoids and Irish words such as “sláinte,” which means cheers, or “craic” which means fun. The official language is Irish so all government documents are in both Irish and English. There is a reason the Irish countryside is so lush and that’s because it rains a great deal but instead of referring to it as “rain,” it is dubbed “liquid sunshine,” a much more poetic definition. Driving through the cities or countryside, one similarity is the sparkling windows and delicate lace curtains peeking through the shining windows. It reminded me want to call in a window washer as soon as I returned to California. Our first stop was for lunch at the famous The Marble Bar but before food was served, P.J. Lanigan regaled us with stories about Ireland’s national sport Hurling, an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic and Irish origin. Older than the recorded history of Ireland the game is thought to predate Christianity. The sport came to Ireland with the Celts and has been an Irish pastime for at least 2000 years, but has been legal only since 1984. P.J., who is a member of the most successful team in Ireland, explained that every town and village has a Hurling Club and that you play where you were born. The game is overseen by the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association,) which has a membership of 2,000 clubs. There is a similar game for women called Camogie. Lanigan explained that Hurling is an international sport with 34 Hurling teams in New York and several in Santa Monica. With the sport being part of the Irish DNA, by age four, children are given baby Hurleys with which to begin to practice. Apparently, talks on Hurling are very popular tourist attractions so put The Marble Bar on your travel itinerary. After a traditional Irish lunch, we were off to explore Kilkenny, once the medieval capital of Ireland and home to a collection of historic landmarks. August 30, 2017

We were to see the sights of Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile, beginning with Kilkenny Castle. The original Anglo-Norman stone castle was built during the first decade of the 13th century. Later, it became the principal Irish residence of the powerful Butler family for almost 600 years when in 1967 Arthur, 6th Marquess of Ormonde gave it to the people of Kilkenny for a token payment of (£)50. The grounds are quite spectacular and offer perfect photo opportunities. This sign of the times was posted: Please Note: The Use of Drones is Not Permitted at Kilkenny Castle. www. kilkennycastle.ie To discover more of this city’s hidden treasures, buy a Medieval Mile Pass for only €39. This will give you access to many sites and buried secrets in its 800-year history. Some of those sights include Kilkenny Castle, Rothe House, Medieval Mile Museum, and Smithwick’s Experience. Also available is the Kilkenny Ghost Tour, which will introduce you to the resident ghosts or if you enjoy sight seeing by train, there is the Kilkenny Road Train Tours starting at only (£)8. For you athletes, there is Golf, Footgolf, and Rugby Golf at Pockocke Golf Center. www.medievalmilemuseum.ie Our day had been a fascinating one and much to our delight our next stop was to visit Smithwick’s Ale Experience Visitor Centre. This is the original site where beer was brewed from the 1700s until 2014. Some of the original rooms involved in the brewing process has a hologram of a person giving pointers on the different aspects of the brewing process, ranging from grains, hops, yeast, water, fermentation, and equipment used in producing a “pint.” At the end of the tour, we were treated

to a variety of beers all with distinctly different flavors. www. smithwicksexperience.com www. smithwicksexperience.com Our exciting day was capped off by an equally exciting evening of music and dinner. NOW Hiring! buffet breakfast, we were off to Jerpoint Park – Lost Town of St. Nicholas - located outside Thomastown, County Kilkenny. Founded in the 12th century, this was once a bustling town, access to which was a toll bridge on the River Nore, the fastest running river in Europe. The town was thought to have fourteen taverns, more than enough to quench the thirst of the inhabitants who lived in the 27 homes. Power was generated by two water wheels servicing the courthouse, woolen mill, a tannery and a brewery. This historic site is managed by Maeve and her husband, a most entertaining 73-year-old Joe O’Connell, who served as our guide. He had retired from his business but decided he didn’t like not being busy, so he bought this property not knowing the historic hidden treasures he would eventually unearth. As we wandered through the grounds, he regaled us with fascinating stories about the past. Aided in his walking with the use of a stick called a Shillelagh, he took us through the ancient cemetery pointing out the various graves where St. Nicholas, known as the patron saint of prostitutes, might be buried. Joe also explained that for easy identification, the shape of each headstone was particular to each family. This informative walk back in time was capped off by a fascinating demonstration of his award-winning sheep herding. Joe’s Sheepdog, a highly intelligent Border Collie, is trained to herd sheep and geese and understands Joe’s multiple hand signals telling him which way to move the flock. It’s quite amazing to see how precisely in tune they are with each other. http://jerpointpark. com/ info@jerpointpark.com After a sinfully sugary snack, we were off again, this time to Woodstock Gardens and Aboretum, in Kilkenny’s Inistioge County. The gardens date back to 1840 and have been almost totally restored to reflect that period. Head gardener John Delaney walked us through this idyllic setting where we saw a walled garden, terraced garden, yew walk, the Monkey Puzzle and Noble Fir Avenues, named for the plants and trees growing in those locations. With a sudden downpour, it was www.desertstarweekly.com

fun to take refuge in one of the gardeners’ sheds where the fragrant aromas from the plants and trees delighted our sense of smell. When the rain subsided, we headed to the tearoom for a delicious snack and were off again. After a short drive, we arrived in New Ross, in County Wexford for our visit to the reconstructed Dunbrody Famine Ship or The Irish Emigrant Experience. The cramped living quarters were difficult on the senses as it was damp with an unpleasant dank odor. It was hard to imagine that about 200 people, filling 40 bunk beds, lived under those conditions for six to eight weeks. They were allowed topside only to cook and received three quarts of drinking water daily. Many people died during the crossing due to the oppressive unsanitary conditions. The heart-breaking stories of famine were reenacted by actors dressed in period costumes. It did give one a sensory taste of what these people endured to get to America. www.dunbrody.com Life is about balance so we went from the tragically difficult to the wonderfully sublime as we were to have dinner at the luxurious 1830’s Dunbrody Country House Hotel & Restaurant located in Dunbrody Park. It is owned by Catherine and Celebrity MasterChef Kevin Dundon, who also runs the Dunbrody Cookery School. The property is nestled on 300 acres of parklands on the Hook Peninsula. Kevin is one of Ireland’s most famous chefs and has been a guest on many television food shows around the world. He prepared an outstanding meal for us consisting of pan-fried Kilmore Quay Scallops with citrus salad and garden herbs; roasted Rosé Veal Rib; and Braised Shoulder with port sauce with gratin dauphinoise. The meal was topped off with garden rhubarb and vanilla rice pudding. We ate, drank, and were very merry and looked forward to the next day, which promised more exciting adventures and more of Ireland’s exquisite cuisine. www.dunbrodyhouse.com Stay tuned for Part 2 for more Ireland adventures including a visit to the famous Hook Lighthouse, two stunning gardens, and surprise revelations.

MUSICAL OPERETTA FAVORITE ON-STAGE AT THEATRE 29 By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, is one of the most performed musical operettas worldwide over the last 50 years. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and lyrics by Tim Rice, ‘Joseph’ has been a favorite target on the radar screen of Director Rebecca Havely for years. When I asked the New York City trained performer/ director and graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy of New York why it has taken her so long to finally mount a production, she smiles sheepishly, saying ”I waited until my son Jericho McWilliams was a grown man and a performer. He has a wonderful singing voice and was always the perfect “Joseph” in my book”. There are several versions of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoast” that have been performed. Each production company gets to select the version that suits their audiences the best. Director Havely has chosen the “meta-mix” version for Theatre 29. Audiences will be seeing an all-singing and dancing production. No written dialogue. Director Havely is fortunate in that her cast – all twenty three singer/dancer/ performers - are committed, dedicated, and eager to strut their stuff in this format. The setting of the Joseph

story is a play-within-a-play that begins in a bible museum where the teacher and the students go back in time to recreate the Old Testament story of Joseph and his meanspirited brothers who ‘sell’ him into a life of slavery to Egypt’s Pharaoh for money to feed themselves and their people. The musical chronicles the trials and tribulations of Joseph’s journey with comedy interludes that employ a western/cowboy, rodeo and Hoe-Down setting and songs, plus French- Parisian songs and a comedy sequence with a French Apache dancing number, then back to where all this light, and a little over-thetop comedy operetta began. With a cast this large – twenty-three; four of whom play multiple roles - it becomes difficult to list everyone. However, there are always standouts. They include: Jericho Mc Williams, whose strong voice as Joseph, brings a warm and winning quality to his performance. Analisa Pilecki as the Female Narrator, as well as the production’s Musical Director, is also the possessor of a lovely soprano voice and stage presence. Scott Clinkscales as the Male Narrator, Ben Bees as Pharaoh and Dan (think Elvis Pressley), Joe Rego as Potiphar and Simon, and Kelly Ames as Mrs. Potiphar and Mime lend solid support. The stage of Theatre 29 is awash in color that is reflected

in the terrific costume designs created by director Havely and Kerry Jimenez. I also suspect that there were a dedicated army of sewing assistants as well who were involved. There are many quick costume changes required for this fastpaced and energetic production that stage manager Liyan Lagevardi, and her assistant Nena Jimenez, must handle to avoid backstage traffic jams and still keep everyone on their toes and on their cues. It’s a credit to the entire company for their commitment and dedication. Chorographer Sarah Fleischman’s dance steps are nicely performed by the

and brought to the Paul Harter Veterinary Hospital at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Californian Luis Eudoro Valencia was reportedly charged with smuggling and unlawful importation of wildlife for attempting to smuggle the animal. The teenager told investigators he bought the tiger for $300 in Tijuana, Mexico. Valencia was released on a $10,000 bond and he is

due to appear at a preliminary hearing in early September. A thorough health check revealed that the tiger was in good condition, the zoo said in a statement.“His heart and lungs sound good, his blood work looked great and, since he took a bottle from us, it’s a good sign he’ll continue to thrive,” Dr. Jim Oosterhuis said. Oosterhuis estimated that the cub is between five

ensemble considering the tight stage confines of the 90- seat Theatre 29. Lighting designer Brandon Hazel and technician Brianna Jillson, nicely paint the stage with light. And kudos also go to the Props people who provide a plethora of spears, handcuffs, food, cups, baskets, blankets, trinkets, and whatever else it takes to transfer the TwentyNine Palms desert to the real middle east desert. There are many innovative and directorial touches to this production that make “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoast” a winning evening of live theatre entertainment. The musical operetta

performs on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 PM, and on Sundays at 2:30 PM. through September 17, 2017. For reservations and ticket information call the theatre box office at 760- 361-4151. As a performing bonus, this production will present two performances at the Barstow Performing Arts Center located on the campus of Barstow Community College on Saturday, September 23rd at 7 PM and on Sunday, September 24th at 2:00 PM., in case you couldn’t obtain tickets from Theatre 29.

and six weeks old and he weighs around six pounds. “He has teeth coming in, so he’ll be teething in the next week or two - so, animal care staff will have a little chore getting him through that,” Dr. Oosterhuis added. The cub was later transferred to a care center in another part of the zoo. He is being kept in an isolated area, away from other

animals, in accordance with San Diego Zoo Global’s protocols for new arrivals.Visitors to the zoo can view the cub at the care center’s nursery window at various times in the day. Ultimately the US Fish and Wildlife Service will decide what happens to the him as it will determine where the cub’s permanent home will be.

Nina Rao Performs at Bhakit Fest 2017 By Jackie Devereaux Joshua Tree, CA – The 9th annual Bhakti Fest returns to the high desert at the Institute of Mentalphysics from Sept. 7-12 for six days of continuous Kirtan music, yoga and meditation where thousands of festival-goers search for spirituality and personal growth. One of the musical headliners, Nina Rao, will perform at the predominately Hindu and Vedic-themed fall festival in a number time slots, and alongside with 2013 Grammy-nominated headliner Krishna Das. Rao was born in Queens, New York but don’t let that all-American fact fool you. Both of her parents were from Bangalore, India, and she learned the sacred Kirtan chants from her grandfather

as a child, singing them in the traditional Indian way. Rao didn’t come to the music industry straight-away. She took a long detour working first in banking on the New York Stock Exchange trading floor in the 1980s. She left banking and started practicing yoga in the 1990s, which led her to meeting Krishna Das who led the chanting at a 1996 yoga retreat “It (suddenly) all came back to me from the time singing with my grandfather,” Rao said in a recent telephone interview from her Brooklyn, New York home. “I knew this was what I wanted to do, and have never stopped chanting since.” Rao became Krisha Das’ business manager. “I set up his email and webpage, assisted him, and performed

Desert Star News Staff MEMPHIS, Tenn. - More than 4,500 people are asking the city of Memphis to remove two Confederate statues. The group “Take Them Down 901” wants the city to take down statues of Nathan Bedford Forrest from Health Sciences Park and Jefferson Davis from Fourth Bluff Park. Organizer Tami Sawyer said her group has been circulating the petition among Memphis residents since June, well before the events in Charlottesville. “We’ve been trying to get it down in our city. It’s something we’ve been talking about for a long time,” she said. “We stand in solidarity with Charlottesville and are saying, you know, ‘This

can’t happen here,’ and these statues need to come down.” The petition was delivered on Tuesday to Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, Gov. Bill Haslam and the Tennessee Heritage Commission. The mayor’s office said Strickland “wants to remove Confederate statues in the city of Memphis, but a state law requires that the Tennessee Historical Commission approve the moves.” The Tennessee Heritage Protection Act requires a twothirds vote by the Tennessee Historical Commission in order to remove a Confederate statue in the state. Sawyer said it’s important to remember that monuments erected in the post-Civil War era such

as his drummer full time in 2002. Now, he tours all year round but she doesn’t. Rao has a teenage daughter who does travel with her when she’s out of school. It’s all business between Rao and Das. They are both married to other people. Rao does try to travel with Das about 70 percent of the time attending most weekend events. Bhakti Fest is an annual event for the two musicians but there is not enough time to attend both the spring and fall festivals. She released her first CD, a double disc, Antarayaami: Knower of All Hearts, four years ago and plans to release her second CD, a single disc sometime in 2018. Her new CD will have compilations of old, original chants she learned

from her grandfather in India. Rao says that lots of artists converge at Bhakti Fest to connect and interact with each other. “It’s a pilgrimage for people to learn

and immerse themselves in chanting – to just go with it.” Go to www.bhaktifest for tickets, camping and on-site accommodations.

Thousands Demand Removal of Memphis Confederate Statues

as these were intended to be an affront to the end of slavery in the United States, and they continue to be a

draw for hate groups. “We’ve been saying that these are racist structures, from which people who have

hatred for people of color draw strength,” she said. “The Sons of the Confederate Veterans had their national convention here, and they took five busloads to visit the statue.” Sawyer said it’s important to prioritize removing the statues as the city prepares to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in April 2018. Last week, state Sen. Sara Kyle, D-Memphis, filed a bill to allow the city of Memphis to make its own decisions regarding Confederate statues. U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., has spoken out in support of the legislation.

Cheerleaders Forced To Do The Splits By KMIR News Star Staff Denver, CO - A painful video shows Ozell Williams, a cheer coach, forcing cheerleaders to do the splits, but they’re crying and begging him to stop. In a video you hear Ally Wakefield screams “please stop” 9 times, but that is just one of 8 different videos where you can see these cheerleaders being forced to do the splits. She says she never expected this to happen when she walked into practice two months ago. “I just didn’t expect to have to do elevated splits and have to do it.” Ally Wakefield was one of many cheerleaders held down by her coach back in June. “He was pushing with his other knee on my back, trying to keep my posture straight.” Ally’s mom, Kirsten Wakefield says this www.desertstarweekly.com

is unacceptable. “This is a grown man pushing my 13 year old daughter so hard, against her will, that she is screaming for help and he is ripping tissues in her body.” Kirsten sent out an email to the schools athletic director on June 15. I started with: I have attached a video of the forced splits she and her other team members were forced to do at cheerleading camp and practices.” The email ends saying: “My husband and I would like to know what the administration is going to do about my daughter’s injury and how it happened.” Kimberly Archie, the founder of the National Cheer Safety Foundation told us she is shocked this even happened. “What was the principal

thinking when they did nothing about this…to see that adults think that this is okay and for the school district to do nothing until journalists get involved is even more egregious than the act itself. As a former coach she understands the sport can get very intense, but says coaches should never go this far. “It’s okay to be competitive, it’s not okay for something like this, this is child abuse, this is child maltreatment, it’s not okay. When someone says no, it means no.” The coaches involved as well as the principal are on administrative leave. Denver police are officially looking into what happened. Source: KMIR August 30, 2017

MUSIC

Eagerly anticipated Albums Coming in Fall 2017

Although we are well over half way through 2017, there are still a number of high-profile albums set for release. Chief among the anticipated titles is “Colors,” the first album from Beck since 2014’s majestic “Morning Phase.” Some cuts from the album have been released (including the infectious “Wow” and dance-minded “Dreams”), and excitement is building as Beck completes a short solo before opening for a string of U2 dates including in San Diego on Sept. 22. Another legendary artist

with new music on the horizon is Morrissey, who will release his 11th studio album “Low in High-School” on Nov. 17. The album will coincide with the launch of Morrissey’s new label, Etienne Records. “Low in High-School” will be released digitally and in physical formats including audio CD, colored vinyl, and even via limited-edition cassette. One of my favorite underthe-radar bands is Pugwash, a Dublin, Ireland-based group headed by singer-songwriterguitarist Thomas Walsh. The power pop proponents have been working with famed singer-songwriter/

on CD and across all major digital and streaming platforms. Finally, you won’t have to wait long to get music from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artist Neil Young. The 71-yearold icon is set to release a new album on Sept. 8, 2017 titled “Hitchhiker.” Recorded in a single day back in 1976 with his producer David Briggs, the album featured early recordings of future classics including “Powderfinger,” “Ride My Llama” and “Pocahontas” (all of which would appear on the 1979 disc “Rust Never Sleeps”)

to east Texas, AP reports. Houston’s Addicks dam has begun spilling over, and engineers are trying to release some of the water in order to save the neighboring communities. The difficulty of controlling the release is “something we’ve never seen before,” flood control official Jeff Lindner told reporters. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said 3,052 people have been rescued by law enforcement since Harvey started wreaking havoc on the city. And in the last eight hours, 1,000 have been taken to safety, the Associated Press reported. FEMA Administrator Brock Long said on Monday that he expects 450,000 people affected by Hurricane Harvey to apply for federal assistance. Long stated he was shipping 2 million liters of water and 2 million meals to the affected areas, which includes Louisiana. In Texas’s Harris County, several thousand people stranded in vehicles and buildings near water were rescued by firefighters and law enforcement using helicopters and motorboats. Many volunteers in the area even used their own boats to

bring people in danger to safety, the New York Times reported. Texas officials estimate 30,000 people affected by Hurricane Harvey have fled to emergency shelters, including to inland cities like Dallas and San Antonio. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings stated the city was told to get ready for “numbers that could be up in the tens of thousands.” In San Antonio, large warehouses turned into shelters that could house more than 4,100 people fleeing Harvey. On Monday, the center of the storm turned eastward to the Gulf of Mexico, which in turn raises the possibility that Harvey could strengthen even more, the New York Times reported. Joel Osteen, pastor for the 17,000-seat Lakewood Church in Houston, is facing criticism because he did not immediately open his church to residents displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Yesterday, the church’s Facebook page posted a statement that read: “Dear Houstonians! Lakewood Church is inaccessible due to severe flooding!” Many people have since taken to social media to criticize Osteen for not making his

place of worship available to people seeking help. On Monday, in response, Osteen tweeted that he would start work on a hurricane relief fund. “Over the last couple of days, as the enormity of this storm was being realized, we have been working to organize relief efforts August 30, 2017

for the Houston area with our friend Franklin Graham and the disaster relief organization that he oversees, Samaritan’s Purse.” On Monday night, writer Charles Clymer cited a source inside Lakewood Church and posted photos alleging that it would soon be opening.

“Lakewood Church apparently bought countless air mattresses and are prepping to open their doors. Took a while but good news.” No official comment has been made by Osteen or anyone from his ministry regarding the opening of the church. www.desertstarweekly.com
