The Life and Times of The Temptations” at the Ahmanson Theatre now through September 30th Lady Beverly Cohn There are opening nights, and then there are Opening Nights! There are musical reviews, and then there are Musical Reviews! There are outstanding talented ensembles, and then there are Outstanding Talented Ensembles! There are enthusiastic audiences, and then there are Enthusiastic

Audiences! There are long, standing ovations, and then there are Long, Standing Ovations! My point? The opening night performance of “Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations,” transcended the ordinary theatrical opening and morphed into a “happening” – very seldom experienced in the theatrical world.

With book by Dominique Morisseau based on “The Temptations by Otis Williams with Patricia Romanowski and music and lyrics from The Legendary Motown Catalog, under the magical, dazzling direction of Des McAnuff, with astounding, razor sharp choreography by Sergio Trujillo, what unfolded on the Ahmanson Theatre

stage was nothing short of a theatrical miracle depiction into the life and times of The Temptations. Told through the prism of Otis Williams, founding member of this iconic group, Derrick Baskin as Williams, gives a brilliant performance as both the narrator of the group’s odyssey, as well as his participation in the explosive song and dance routines. What

is particularly outstanding is that this is truly an incredibly talented ensemble with each and every performer on that stage delivering knockout song and dance numbers. The story begins in Detroit where Otis is living in a city housing project. As was common back then, he and his Continues on Page 3

Bully Victim Embraced By The ‘Jedi Order’ KMIR Max Rodriguez The story of a fifth grader who was sent to the hospital after a physical altercation with a fellow classmate is receiving national attention, and not for the level of violence inside an elementary school, but rather for the reason why the victim decided not to fight back. KMIR News first spoke to 10-year-old Aiden Vasquez, a student at Two Bunch Palms Elementary School who said another classmate hit him in the face when he tried to get his backpack back from the student. Vasquez said, “I saw blood dripping and I started screaming in pain.” However, Vasquez did not fight back.

Instead, “I told my mom, I got from Star Wars that is not the Jedi way.” His rejection of the dark side caught the attention of Luke Skywalker himself, actor Mark Hamill tweeted his support for the young Padawan, part of his tweet said, “I’m so proud of you for showing that you can be a Jedi in real life.” Those who follow the Jedi Order are proud of Vasquez. His story continues to receive national attention, and people continue to reach out to show their support. “Chicago Jedi” is a group made of Star Wars fans, the president of the group, Gabriel Calderon said he wants to encourage Vasquez to

continue to follow his values. Calderon said, “You aren’t alone, there are people out there who care about you, who look out for you and its part of being a Jedi that’s a special kind of family.” And now as part of the Jedi family, Vasquez can share the Jedi Order with his fellow peers. “I really don’t want anybody to get hurt anymore, I just want everyone to be nice to each other,” Vasquez said. “If you see a bully run away and tell a teacher.” American Film Director, J.J. Abrams has also reached out from the Star Wars set in London in hopes to show his support for the young fifth-grader. Source: KMIR

You Just Won the Lottery Part 2 By Janice Gough In last week’s edition, I discussed the financial decisions you need to make if you won the big one, the Lottery! This week, I will share ideas of moving forward in your New life after you have established a management plan for your winnings. Once you have set up your budget and determined how much can be spent on monthly expenses and how much to save and how much can be allocated to discretionary funds, take some “much needed” time for yourself. Write down the dreams you have had through your life, to remind yourself of some interests that you never had the time or money to pursue. You’ve had a lot going on the past few weeks, what with winning the lottery, quitting your job, straightening up your finances, and dodging all the money grubbers, and now it’s time to relax. Surround yourself with people who you enjoy being in your inner circle. If you love traveling select those friends who are easy to get along with (and are not an abuser of alcohol or drugs). Vacations nightmares can easily happen with the wrong people on board. Then pack your bags and get out of Dodge. Pick the one place you have always wanted to visit, turn off your phone, hop on a plane (firstclass, of course), and chill. All the chaos you left will be there when you get back, but for now, enjoy the lemonade that life has handed you. My first thoughts if I won

the lottery is to consider who I care for most and how I wish to help them. I would suggest that you invite them to a gathering and hand them a check, that may change their lives. Other ways you may help them may be paying off their debt, setting up money in a retirement account or providing college funding or you may choose to make at least one long-term investment. The gifting exemption per person, per year, is currently $15,000. By setting up a trust for a loved one, you can designate how and when they receive your gift. You can gift to as many people that you select. Also, consider that some family or friends may not afford you anymore, due to their spending limit, however through gifting, you can help them to share your life If you have friends or family who is known for not to managing their money well, then consider asking them to sign legal documents that will dictate how they will spend gifted money. So far, you have rewarded friends and family by gifting, now it time to think about the things you want. It is easy to shop ‘til you drop after claiming all that cash, but it’s a trap, a fool’s game that will only satisfy your impulses while making a sizable dent in your winnings. Treat yourself to a few things that have been on your most-wanted list, however, try to quell your desire to own all the junk money can buy. It might help to consult a confidant when you feel the urge to shop. The person who you trust to tell you to stop being a fool, and will tell you honestly that you

By Desert Star Staff JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri’s agriculture products bring in more than $88 billion a year, based on the latest data from the Missouri Farm Bureau, and much of the labor is supplied by migrant workers on H-2A visas. The visas allow foreign nationals to enter the U.S. for temporary work, and by law employers must meet certain stipulations about wages and working conditions. A lawsuit filed this week by the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) alleges that requirement is not being enforced by the U.S. Department of Labor in Missouri and other states. “So, what that leads to is just workers being paid less, both guest workers coming from Mexico and other countries, as well as U.S. workers that are working in those jobs,” explains Justin Flores,FLOC’s vice president.

According to a 2017 survey by the Missouri Department of Economic Development, wages for H-2A workers range from $7.70 an hour to $16.50 an hour. The U.S. Department of Labor referred a request for comment to the Department of Justice, which declined to comment on this story. Flores says while upholding the law regarding H-2A visas is the goal of the FLOC lawsuit, there is a larger problem that needs to be addressed with manufacturers demanding bottom dollar pricing from their agriculture suppliers. “We obviously want to see improved wages and working conditions for all workers in agriculture, but we see this only as only one small piece H-2A workers must be paid twice a month and receive a job description in writing, but FLOC says the U.S. of the puzzle,” he states. Department of Labor isn’t always enforcing the requirements. are overspending. If you don’t have one friend like that, get one. They’re great to have around, lottery winner or not. Since you no longer have to work, consider volunteering at a local charity. For all the fulfillment of joy in your heart, you will never go home tired. Remember the saying “Birds of a feather, flock together.” I suggest donating to local organizations instead of corporate charities because by investing in your community, You get to enjoy the impact of your donations and how they improve the quality of life, for residents. It will keep you inspired to see your money in action. Charity Navigator is a website that allows you to view how donations are spent and how effectively their organization is run. If you plan to move to another State, select one where taxes are lower, and that has no State tax. Our economy seems excellent, however, in our area of Coachella Valley, we have the largest Rich class in the world and at the same time the lowest average household incomes in the U.S., so do not assume that your community does not need your help. For 2018, the estate and gift tax exemption is $5.6 million per individual. That means an individual can leave $5.6 million to heirs and the estate pays no federal estate or gift tax. A married couple will be able to shield $11.2 million from federal estate and gift taxes. If your estate is over that limit, even after gifting, you need to set up a trust to help avoid estate taxes and avoid any properties having to go thru probate court.

Another reason for avoiding probate is we only have Probate judge for the entire Valley; thus probate requires a lot of time and money where assets take forever to get transferred. You should select a good trust attorney who will help to strategize the best plan, notarize and register the trust. Thru the Pour-Over Will, included in the Trust, you can include all those unique things that you wish to bequeath to your loved ones. Do not fail to manage this as there is always someone who could manipulate owning your estate, an event your physical and mental health declines. Every state has different laws; thus your trust should align with the requirements of your country. It is time to plan your lasting legacy. What legacy will you leave when you die? Like a lottery winner, you have the

chance to make a real impact. Money makes the world go ‘round, so try to live your best life with the luck you’ve been given. Share the wealth, too. Not with everyone, but at least set up your immediate family children and grandchildren, specifically, for success through inheritances and trust funds. No obligation, though. If you’ve got six months to live and you want to go out with a bang and zero dollars in the bank, you do you. Maybe your luck will rub off on them, but at least you enjoyed the ride. Time passes and The Temptations still have second billing, this time after The Supremes. A little romance sweetens the story as Melvin develops a crush on Mary Wilson and Otis falls in love with Josephine, wonderfully acted and sung by Rashidra Scott. Eventually they marry and have a son named Lamont, played by Shawn Bowers. Cracks begin to develop in the marriage because her husband is away for weeks and sometimes months and she wants him off the road. Gordy decides the group needs a manager and he introduces the guys to Shelly Berger, well played by Joshua Morgan. A particularly funny moment is when the guys do a double take, as Berger is Caucasian. With his guidance, the group is now appearing on such programs as American Bandstand singing some of their hits including, “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me,)” “I Can’t Get Next to You,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” and the song which is the show’s title, “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.” During this time period, the backdrop is civil unrest in the country, including riots in Detroit, and despite their fame, their bus is fired upon with nasty racial epitaphs shouted at them by white nationalists. There are also drug problems within the

group. David Ruffin falls victim to drug use causing him to become vocally challenged and bitter. The group also looses Eddie to lung cancer. On a lighter note, during a recording session, one of the Temps doesn’t want to sing “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” He thinks the song is stupid and doesn’t like the opening line, which refers to the Third of September, his daddy’s birthday. So during the session, he deliberately spits out the first two lines, which is quite funny. Under McAnuff’s crisp, dazzling direction, the show is perfectly paced and we are treated to hearing some of The Temptations iconic hits such as, “For Once in My Life,” “I Can’t Get Next to You,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” “In the Still of the Night,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me,” “My Girl,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” and “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted.” At the end of each number, the audience response was deafening. As for me? I smiled throughout the evening. Why is Mainstream Media Still So White?

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – The story of America is becoming increasingly more diverse, but the same can’t be said for America’s storytellers. While the population of the United States is nearly 40 percent nonwhite and growing, 83 percent of journalists working in U.S.

newsrooms are white. To be fair, newsrooms were getting much more diverse until about 2008, when the economy crashed, forcing massive layoffs. That meant the last journalists hired were the first to go, including many minorities. At the same time, because the way people get

their news has changed so dramatically, newsrooms have continued to shrink. Rick Harp, who creates podcasts for Media Indigena, says many people’s stories are not being told, or they’re framed through the lenses of a white journalist, often male. “And I think sometimes even if you’re not a white

man, you tend to adopt their perspective on things – it becomes the norm – and people start to internalize them,” he states. “Even if you’re an indigenous reporter, you can run into that.” A recent report by The New York Times showed that the number of people of color in staff positions working at its paper rose to 28 percent in 2017 – up only one point from the year before. Angie Chuang, an associate professor of journalism at the University of Colorado, says being a reporter does not necessarily pay well, and many parents may think it’s a risky investment when it’s time to send their children off to college. She adds that President Donald Trump calling out journalists as the “enemy of the people” is creating some fear among would-be reporters. “Really, recently, it’s been seen as possibly risky,” she

That’s certainly not going to encourage people to stay or go into the profession for their own safety.” Even if minorities are willing to take the personal or financial risk of becoming a reporter, Harp says they often don’t see a place for themselves in the world of journalism. “They’re going to be more implicitly encouraged to go into that field if they already see themselves represented,” he states. “If they don’t feel themselves represented, either they explicitly feel kind of rejected by the storytelling or implicitly feel that’s not a place that they’re attracted to.” The Kerner Commission released the first report on the lack of diversity in newsrooms in 1968, calling attention to the issue during reporting on the civil rights movement.

Health Care on Voters’ Minds for Primary Day

By Desert Star Staff BOSTON – Tuesday was primary day in the Bay State, and the candidates who win a place on the November ballot could have a major impact on the future of health care. Republicans in Washington continue to wage a relentless campaign to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, while many Democrats are promoting what they call Medicare for all. But James Roosevelt, former CEO of the Tufts Health Plan, maintains that the most important issue is maintaining affordable, accessible health care, and scrapping the ACA may not be the best approach. “We need to keep a focus on what’s working in the present system, fix the things that need improvement and not

essentially throw the baby out with the bathwater,” he states. Although modified to meet federal requirements, the Massachusetts universal health care law predates the ACA and has achieved 98 percent overall insurance coverage in the state. While Republicans have called for repealing and replacing the ACA and have chipped away at key provisions of the law, Roosevelt points out that they have yet to come up with a replacement. And, he adds, the ACA has worked. “Nationwide, more than 300 million Americans now have access to coverage for their care and, moreover, they can’t be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions like diabetes or asthma or cancer,” he stresses.

Advocates say new federal rules allowing plans that offer fewer benefits will undermine access to affordable insurance for people with pre-existing conditions. Roosevelt notes that there are several competitive races in this year’s primary, and voters need to ask themselves a critical question when they go to polls on Tuesday. “Am I voting for a candidate who has both the right position in terms of continuing to cover everybody for their health care, and the understanding and experience to fight for that in Congress?” he poses. Last year almost 250,000 people in Massachusetts enrolled in health plans through the health insurance exchange facilitated by the ACA.

Advocates say undermining the ACA could lead to denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions. (vjohns1580/pixabay)

Federal Court Appointees Affecting Workers’ Rights

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE — U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will begin confirmation hearings next week. But one legal expert says President Donald Trump already has made a big impact on the judiciary - and workers’ rights are hurting for it. Trump has far outpaced previous presidents at this point in his presidency with 26 appointments to the U.S. Court of Appeals. His nominees make up 1-in-7 judges on these courts nationwide. Larry Shannon, government affairs director with the Washington State Association for Justice, said these lower court judges are bound to follow recent Supreme Court rulings that have hurt workers, including allowing forced arbitration and the Janus decision on unions. “Assuming that

Kavanaugh gets confirmed, I’m not sure how much it changes what is already a very dramatic slide towards putting corporate rights, for instance, over everything else,” Shannon said. “We’ve already started down that road.” Shannon noted appellate judges nationwide hear a lot of cases - nearly 60,000 in 2017. In comparison, the Supreme Court typically hears about 80 each year. While Trump has appointed a large number of appellate court judges, as well as Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, he lags behind past presidents for district court appointees. Shannon said it’s not just the Trump administration affecting the judiciary. The U.S. Senate has streamlined the process for appointing federal judges. Shannon said this could be thought of as a political decision, but more important is the fact that

U.S. appellate judges heard nearly 60,000 cases in 2017. (Joe Wolf/Flickr) some of these candidates appear to be unqualified. “You could speculate, is it political or not? Probably is. But what you can say, I think with certainty, is it’s a question of, ‘Are these the best people we can find to do these

jobs?’” he said. “And in my view, consistently we’re seeing too many of them where the answer is no, they are not.” Last week, the American Bar Association rated one of Trump’s district court nominees “unqualified” -

the fourth judge picked by the president to earn such a rating. Before Trump’s presidency, the ABA had not rated a district court nominee unqualified since 2005.

Historic No Bail State Law Causing Controversy

KMIR Kitty Alvarado California has become the first state in the nation to get rid of cash bail. John Bretz has been in the bail bonds business for 11 years. He has a problem with SB 10, the law just signed by Governor Jerry Brown aimed to reform the bail system. “It’s not going to hurt our business, it’s going to put us out of business,”

says Bretz adding that while he can survive because he also is an investigator, the industry will be shuttered and have a domino effect on communities if this law is allowed to take effect. But that’s not all. “It’s going to cost the tax payers a lot more money,” he says. With the new law, getting out of jail before

a hearing will depend on the risk you pose, not on whether or not you can pay. Robert Hertzberg, (D) Los Angeles, the senator who co-wrote the law says the current system does not work for everyone, “The chief justice says current money bail is neither safe nor fair, I think what you’re going to see now is safe and fair,” adding that the average bail

is $50,000 in California and the average person doesn’t even have $400 to spare. But Bretz says no money bail means no incentive for people who broke the law to return to court, “Therefore you’re going to have to have a lot more officers out there running down people who don’t go to court which is done now by the bail bondsman or bounty hunter.”

By Desert Star Staff PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The preliminary U.S.-Mexico trade deal announced this week by President Donald Trump is seen as welcome news by Wisconsin dairy farmers and cheese makers, even if they haven’t read the fine print. Mexico and Canada are two of Wisconsin’s biggest trading partners, and the dairy industry has been hit hard by ongoing trade disputes. The deal with Mexico

calls for no tariffs on dairy and agricultural products, which for cheese had been hovering at 15 to 25 percent. Jeff Schwager, president of Sartori Cheese in Plymouth, exports his products to 49 different countries and says he’s happy to see those tariffs dropped. “It’s really difficult for a company like us,” he states. “We age cheese – so basically, cheese we made a year ago under certain trade rules was

what we were expecting to sell here in July and August. And all of a sudden, you’ve got these tariffs on them.” Trump says he intends to terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement and that the U.S. will immediately begin negotiations with Canada, the third party in the trilateral trade pact. Schwager acknowledges the Trump announcement was short on detail, so he’s eager to see and confirm which

programs will remain in play. For instance, he says there still might be a problem if Mexico doesn’t extend the same protections for product names in the U.S., as it did for Europe. “We’ve had to change the name of some of our products going into Mexico because we can no longer use the name ‘asagio,’” he points out. “That’s a protected name for the Europeans now in Mexico, and we had to switch our

Coachella Dog. Located at the Pier 29 Food Court. • La Diabla Maria serves authentic street style tacos, tequila flights and ice cold cerveza. Guests can choose from carne asada al pastor, pollo, tripas, lengua, barbacoa, and pork chorizo. Both flour and corn tortillas are freshly made in house. Located at the former Groove nightclub. He also agrees with the ACLU’s position, the people this law is supposed to help will be the same ones who won’t qualify to get released by those assessing their risk, “I do believe that you know, whether we like it or not race comes into play in a lot of things we do.” The law will take effect on October 1, 2019. product name to ‘Sartiago.’” Schwager says his company has seen about a 30 percent reduction in volume as a result of dealing with the name changes. He adds it is equally important to quickly form a new deal with Canada. The United States hopes to get a final deal signed before the Mexican president leaves office in December.
