West Nile Virus Found in Palm Springs

60-year-old woman contracts WNV PALM SPRINGS - For the first time this year, a sample of mosquitoes from Palm Springs tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). This sample contained 41 mosquitoes and came from a trap near the corner of East Vista Chino and North Palm Canyon Drive. Also, in northwest Riverside County a 60-year-old woman tested positive for WNV last week. Mosquito samples from 11 other traps in areas around the north and middle shores of the Salton Sea also tested positive, bringing the total number of WNV-positive mosquito samples in the Coachella Valley this year to 14. Two sentinel chickens

tested positive for the virus early last month in the Mecca area. “We are fortunate that we haven’t had any people test positive for West Nile virus in the Coachella Valley so far this year, but the virus is now on both sides of the Valley and everyone needs to be extra cautious,” said Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District Vector Ecologist, Gregory S. White, PhD. The traps where mosquitoes tested positive near the Salton Sea were collected between July 25 and July 30 and were tested by the Center for Vectorborne Diseases at UC Davis. By Staff Russian vodka goes down the drain as gay activists in Palm Springs protest against a Russian law dubbed by Western media as “anti-gay.” Meanwhile, the law “against promoting homosexuality to minors” finds support in traditional Russia. The Russian legislation passed on June 30 was met with cries of outrage and calls by gay activists for a determined response. Demonstrators around the U.S. have joined the LGBT

community last weekend by dumping vodka into the streets calling for a ban of all Russian food and drink in protest to what they call “Russia’s anti-gay laws.” The law sparked concerns in the media with some speculating that it prohibits “holding hands,” according to ABC Good Morning America or that the “offenders face jail sentences,” according NBC News. Meanwhile, the law is not about punishing people for being homosexual, but rather it intends

mosquito surveillance, searching out breeding sites within a mile of the traps where the infected mosquitoes were found, and conducting larval control and barrier treatments where appropriate in those areas. These efforts will help to reduce the number of mosquitoes and interrupt further disease transmission. Protect yourself from mosquito bites. Apply insect repellent with DEET (N, N-diethylm-toluamide), picaridin (KBR 3023), oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] or IR3535 according to the instructions on the product label. percent or less on older children. Lemon eucalyptus oil should not be used on children under three years of age. Be aware of peak mosquito hours from dawn and dusk. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities during that time. Clothing can help reduce mosquito bites. Wear longsleeves, long pants and socks to help keep mosquitoes away from skin. Drain standing water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places for mosquitoes to breed by draining/discarding items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty unused flowerpots and wading pools. Change water in birdbaths and pet bowls at least weekly.

Install or repair screens. Keep mosquitoes outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors. WNV is transmitted to humans and animals through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most individuals will not experience any illness. Others will have mild symptoms, such as fever, headache and body aches. Young children, the elderly or individuals with lowered immune systems are at greater risk. Anyone with symptoms should contact their health care provider. Call 760-342-8287 or 888343-9399 to report problems, request mosquitofish, report neglected pools or standing water or dead birds. Go to www. cvmvcd.org for more information and submit service requests.

The Man Who Loved Baseball

By Dan Mcallister I would love to tell you about the man who loved baseball. His name was James Pagan. I met Pagan in the fall of 1986. Twenty-five years ago, he was a client at the Foundation for the Retarded of the Desert, known today as the Desert Arc. A name more befitting the organization and more friendly to these very special people. At that time, I drove a truck in the Valley and selected Pagan to be my helper and sidekick on the job. He was a robust man who was not severely handicapped. He was a good friend for many years. I also owned a security company for 20 years known as Mac Bros. Security. I secured

the contract for the Spring Training Home of the California Angels Major League Baseball team. I had the contract from 1984 until the final season here in 1992. All the men in the McAllister clan worked those entire seasons for we are all die hard baseball fans. In Spring of 1987, Pagan asked if I would hire him to work with us. He was a baseball fanatic and even with his limitations, he was baseball savvy. He was ecstatic working with the greats of baseball, players like Carew, Jackson, Joyner, manager’s Mauch, Rogers and even the great Gene Autry, and that’s not to mention the greats on the opposing teams. I kept Pagan with Mac Bros. Security for six years, and he was a favorite of many players. When he passed away in 1996 at the age of 56 years old, we were all greatly saddened. Cabot Yerxa, (1883-1965), historically referred to as the Father of Desert Hot Springs, homesteaded land on Miracle Hill from 1913 to 1918, and later wrote a long series of articles about his desert experiences that were published the Desert Sentinel newspaper. Cabot’s Museum Foundation has reprinted that series of articles in a book, “On the Desert Since 1913,” which is available at the museum trading post and on their website. Here’s another installment from the historical book. (Introduction by Richard Brown, Cabot’s Museum Foundation Board Member)

[article 24: December 20, 1951] By Cabot yerxa

Merry Christmas, my burro, was always turned loose to forage and go and come at will, but on some occasions was staked out with a strong chain. It would bray if out of feed or water, and the difference in tone could often be noticed. One day it was staked out on the side of Miracle Hill and there was a distressed bray, different from normal. And so I rushed up there to find it had gotten its feet in the chain and fallen upside down into a gully. A horse would have thrashed and cut its legs badly if in such a predicament. But burros have sense. It called for help and waited for it to arrive. A horse, very thirsty coming to water, will drink too much and perhaps die. A burro, very thirsty, will take a mouthful of water, throw its head up, rinse its teeth and spit it out once or twice, then take a small drink and go lie down. After some rest it will swallow some more water. A burro never drinks too much or too fast, if overheated by work or the weather.

Pagan’s two nephews traveled to the Desert for his funeral services. I remember speaking about his great love affair with baseball to an overflowing congregation. I and his nephews afterwards After the hot well was discovered and in use, tubs, pails, half-barrels, and other containers were always kept full in front of the cabin so that any animal, ours or others, could always come there and be sure of water to drink. This they did and liked it. Not so Merry Xmas! It would come and taste the water and if cold, refuse to drink. No sir! No cold water for this desert child. It knew there was hot water in the well and [was] much to be preferred. So it would start braying, paw the ground, kick the tub, overturn pails, and make such a disturbance that someone would have to go to the well and pull up some hot water for Merry Xmas to drink. As it grew larger I could ride on some of the trips, but few strangers ever rode the animal, because as they started to climb into the saddle, it would reach round and bite them in soft places. Merry Xmas performed its part of the work everyday, hauled water and wood, made trips to the railroad, and so I saved up enough money to buy a very fine Swiss sheep bell, with a clear ringing tone that could be heard a long ways. This bell hung from a heavy strap round its neck, and every step rang the bell. This was a very cheerful help to my many hours of walking trips about the desert. One day the burro and I were walking into Palm Springs along the one-track sandy road, the bell as usual ringing merrily. As we approached the small white schoolhouse on the north edge of town, the school teacher was at the roadside with seven children. She hailed me to stop, and the children crowded round the burro. She said, “Please talk to the children and tell them where you live. You are the only stranger to pass the school in a week, and August 7, 2013

tried to figure out what to do with Pagan’s ashes. I could get in trouble for this, but I suggested that the only fitting way to honor him was to go to Angel Stadium and spread his ashes from

home plate around the bases, the pitcher’s mound and all of the outfield. For the past 17 years, every time I am in the vicinity of Angel’s Stadium in Palm Springs, I think about my friend, James Pagan.

Originally written fOr the DeSert Sentinel I would like to have the children talk with a stranger.” So we passed a few friendly moments, and the next day when I returned down the road, she again heard the silvertoned bell on the burro’s neck and brought the children to the roadside. The seven youngsters petted Merry Xmas and gave it grass and leaves. We waved goodbye, [and] the children went back into the small school building having talked

to a stranger. Merry Xmas and I were soon out on the open desert and into a sandstorm blowing down the Whitewater wash. At such times, I walked on the lee side of the burro and let it take the brunt of the drifting sand. After some hours of walking, it was with relief that we reached Two Bunch Palms, got out of the heavy winds, and could drink at the pool. We soon reached home.

Know-How

Last week saw the markets post their sixth consecutive winning week while pushing year-to-date returns on the major averages more than 20 percent. This is quite remarkable considering we are just seven months into the year. Real estate continued to show

strength with prices soaring in some of the most depressed areas. San Francisco, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Los Angeles all saw increases of approximately 20 percent or more over May of 2012. Southern California was especially strong with a whopping 28.3 percent jump in prices from a year ago. The median home price in the southland is now $385,000 up from about $250,000 in 2009. GDP was a wobbly 1.7 percent even with the government’s new methodology of calculating this key indicator. The last three quarters of GDP now stand at 0.1 percent, 1 percent and 1.7 percent respectfully. Those are nothing to write home about but you can see where the economy continues to

soon. This illustrates just how weak the rest of the world is and how strong the U.S. economy is in comparison to other developed markets. We are seeing some signs of life in U.S. manufacturing so hopefully that will lead to increased exports in the future. Europe and Japan are two economies that are starting to increase in activity. I am advising clients that we may need to consider taking profits from our biggest winners in the U.S. soon and increase our exposure to Europe and Japan. European markets were up more than 10 percent in the past month after being down for most of 2013. Jobs and the Fed remain key ingredients going forward. If our economy is truly improving, then the jobs reports have to get stronger. A key benchmark will be the yield on 10-year Treasury bond. It was 1.6 percent in May and 2.7 percent last week. Large jumps like that could derail our recovery.

Daytime Ride Along DHS Police Sergeant Jose L. Guerrero makes a drug arrest on 7th Street. By Jackie Devereaux DESERT HOT SPRINGS – Local police are finding the city’s streets to be pretty quite these days, and that’s a very different picture from five years ago when gang bangers, prostitutes and open drug dealing was rampant in this desert community located 10 miles north of Palm Springs. These days, it’s the Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Indio police departments are inundated with calls for armed robberies, burglaries and drug dealing. The days of high crime statistics in DHS are over.

“Most of the service calls we get these days are from B & Es (breaking and entering) in vacant homes,” said Desert Hot Springs Sergeant Jose L. Guerrero during a recent daytime police ride along. “Occasionally we get a 415 (disturbance with a neighbor) or a retailer calling about trouble with a customer,” Sgt. Guerrero said. “We have 30-thousand or more population plus tourists which adds to the number of service calls in high season,” he said.

“This is a tourist town, people like the spas and the desert air. We respond to every call, putting our lives on the line, and generally, the community understands our work and that we are here to protect their property from crimes of opportunity,” he added. Sgt. Guerrero drove through the Estancia Apartment Country Club off Ironwood Drive where police have responded to a number of service calls in the past. He said that people who leave open garage doors or windows invite B & Es. Guerrero, 40, has worked at the DHS Police Department for one year, but came with a lot of experience from the Department of Justice working undercover or as an instructor in El Centro, Imperial, Riverside and San Diego. “We have got to beat the criminals at their own game,” he said while stopping at a home on Santa Cruz Avenue because the resident left their trunk open in the driveway with bags visible inside. “This just invites a thief.” Unfortunately, with the state-ordered prison realignment people arrested are released within two days. “It’s not our fault. The DA doesn’t have the manpower or says there’s not

DHS City Manager Resigns

By Jackie Devereaux DESERT HOT SPRINGS – City Manager Rick Daniels submitted a letter of resignation to Mayor Yvonne Parks on July 24 where he stated he was leaving to pursue other business opportunities. “I have negotiated an agreement with the city of Needles, CA,” Daniels said. “I’ll be leaving DHS sometime in mid-September.” “It is with a heavy heart that I announce that Rick Daniels has chosen to resign as the City Manager,” said Mayor Yvonne Parks in a written statement. “...Daniels has served our community faithfully over the last six years. During that time our community has come together to accomplish a number of objectives significantly improving the quality of life for our residents and setting the stage for an economic renaissance,” Parks stated. Accomplishments such as Operation Falling Sun in 2008, which reduced crime in DHS by 47 percent and parolee reductions by 50 percent are a testament to his work, she said. Additionally, more than 48 miles of local streets have been www.desertstarweekly.com

enough evidence to prosecute or not enough room in the jails to hold them,” he added. Sgt. Guerrero would like to see more house calls made to those on probation or on parole. “We need them (the county) to hire more people because we tend to play those roles. We need them to come and partner

with us,” he said. In the 66100 block of 7th Street, Guerrero arrested a white, male, early 20s who was sitting in the street intoxicated, carrying drugs and drug paraphernalia. The white powder was tested on the spot and found to be an opiate, either heroin or morphine. Sgt.Guerrero also found a hypodermic syringe, a glass pipe in the suspect’s pockets. Before handcuffing the suspect, Guerrero asked, “Why don’t you get some help? There are programs out there to help you.”

paved. Daniels’ most notable accomplishment is the construction of a new Community Health & Wellness Center, which includes a 22,000 sq. ft. Boys & Girls Club, a CIF qualified John H. Furbee Aquatic Center, and a health center. The health center, staffed by two intern physicians, has a four-chair dental clinic, a cardiovascular gym and a 3,000 sq. ft. community room. The city has seen two overpasses widened at Palm Drive and Indian Canyon, new center medians constructed in downtown core and the annexation of 4,000 acres. The DHS City Council met in a closed session to discuss Daniels’ departure and successor at the Tuesday, Aug. 6 city council meeting.

2 Guns‘-An Action Packed Buddy Flick By theda Kleinhans reichman It’s summertime. Action flicks are hot and Universal‘s “2 Guns” falls nicely into the fast and furious category. The film stars Denzel Washington as Trench, an undercover agent for the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency), and Mark Wahlberg as “Stig,” an undercover agent for U.S. naval intelligence. They’ve joined forces, but neither one knows that the other is also a government operative. The story begins as they head to Mexico to check on a drug dealer the DEA has been closely monitoring. Their final destination is a secret enclave where they plan to buy drugs from Manny “Papi” Greco (Edward James Olmos) who, according to Wahlberg’s character, looks like a Mexican Albert Einstein. Papi, a shrewd. ruthless character, decides to give them cash, not drugs, in exchange for the fake passports he requested. They refuse, opting for drugs only. Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur then cuts back to the

present as Trench and Stig make plans to rob the Tres Cruces Savings and Loan where over 40 million bucks of Cartel drug money is stashed. The screenplay by Blake Masters is based on a series of graphic novels by Steven Grant and like so many films today the bad guys are CIA agents and US military guys. Even the heroes, so to speak, have very few redeeming qualities. The most decent guy in the film is Wahlberg, who, with a wink, can captivate a waitress before blowing up the diner where she works. On the plus side, there are plenty of plot twists so be alert. No one is who they seem to be and a good guy, or gal, is hard to find. There’s an abundance of violence, raging bulls and buddy banter between Stig and Trench. And if you are an action fan, there is plenty of it, but the tone of the film makes you long for a few characters with some integrity. The closest one is Stig who really

By theda Kleinhans reichman Summertime movies are usually big budget blockbusters aimed mainly at a younger audience. “Pacific Rim,” is about gigantic robots that battle evil forces in order to save the world. Then there’s “World War Z” starring Brad Pitt which features an onslaught of zombies out to take over the planet. Joining the undead crowd at the movies is “RIPD” about dead law enforcement officers coming back to earth in order to save mankind from an invasion of the evil dead. With stars like Jeff Bridges and Kevin Bacon you’d think that “RIPD” had a chance with an adult crowd, but reviews have been unanimously bad. One critic said, “The first 20 minutes of the film felt

like the eighth day of jury duty,” while another reviewer lamented “Oh, God, how do I begin.” Kid flicks like Disney.Pixar’s “Monsters University” and Universal’s “Despicable Me 2” have been the big winners at the box office, winning top spots on the charts week after week. But if monsters, sci-fi or animated, are not your thing, you may want to rent or buy “Quartet” or take another look at “Silver Lining Playbook,” which I did this past weekend.

The Passage of Death By Sonja grace JOSHUA TREE - Most people are never prepared for death and seldom are truly prepared for the loss felt with the passing of a loved one. We make this passage over and over with each incarnation, yet we remember nothing until we face the very passage as we travel with our loved ones towards the light. Once we are on the other side in the spirit realm we connect with our source. This merging with Divine Love is so profound all of the personality defects no longer apply. All we want to do is purify and seek forgiveness for any pain we caused on Earth. We become the guardian

angels to the youngest members of the family while keeping an eye on the entire group. Our job in the spirit realm is intensive. There is no rest and no pain, only the efforts of keeping our world in balance. The higher octave of the human experience is to reconnect with that true state of being while in physical form. Often through the practice of meditation we can reach this state of consciousness. We are capable of obtaining inner peace but must first look at our belief systems and where we are holding onto out dated ideas that keep us attached and investing in the duality. We keep it all repeating lifetime after lifetime because our energy is engaged in what is right and wrong

in this world. When we invest our energy in the duality and isolate that as the only experience, we limit our soul from self-realization. This is no easy mountain to climb as it requires selflessness and a desire to excavate the very emotional woundings that keep us going round and round on the karmic wheel of life. It may take surrendering your ego many times before you understand what the ego is really for. It may take processing your past in a way your mind has been far too clever to digest. There is a state of surrender that allows us the ability to see death as nothing more than a mere passage into our true state of being: spirit. World-renowned author and mystic healer, Sonja Grace is presenting the Healing Meditation Retreat Oct. 18 – 20 at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center. Skyscapes + 2

Photographs by Victor Barocas at Koffi North Victor Barocas’ current show at Koffi North, Skyscapes + 2, captures the drama and majesty of the desert skies throughout the day and during each of the four seasons. Seventeen of the 19 images that make up the show, remind viewers of the unique desert skies, experienced by both locals and visitors. And, while the focus is upon the desert sky, Victor’s “+ 2” takes a unique look at the desert, like the unique architectural elements of the a Saguaro Hotel’s

awning, with the mountains and clear sky as the backdrop. “With his mesmerizing images of the Coachella Valley’s sky,” noted Pam Price, “Victor captures the essence of the desert horizons; he uses the mountains and tree tops as unexpected architectural elements.” Lee Stark, another visitor commented. “By printing the photographs on metallic paper, the deep colors shimmer; they give viewers a greater sense of depth and perspective.” While each image creates its

own mood, viewers gravitate to and comment most about three images. For many, Canyon Layers II seems like a memory. A layer of soft bluish clouds hover over a series of canyon tops presented in deeper shades of blue. Punctuated Sky could be an abstract photograph. An almost purple cloud seems like an exclamation point above horizontal bands of bright yellow-green clouds. The image is grounded by a thin layer of almost black mountain tops. An intense orange and yellow sky, in sharp contrast to the deep black silhouettes of mountains and palm trees, is the essence of Desert Sunset. And, by being printed on

Victor Barocas’ current show at Koffi North metallic paper, the image becomes all the more vibrant. Presented by Archangel Gallery, the show will be up until the end of the summer. Koffi North is

located at 515 North Palm Canyon Drive (the corner of North Palm Canyon and Alejo), Palm Springs. For more information, contact Archangel Gallery at 760-320-4795.

Culinary Spotlight

Executive Chef Jesse Souza of the Circa 59 restaurant

CirCa 59 Summer menu DelightS By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS – There’s a delicious brand new summer menu at the Circa 59 restaurant located inside the Riviera Hotel on the corner of Vista Chino and Indian Canyon Road in Palm Springs. I recently dined here with my husband, Tom, and we marveled at the variety of delectable delights all coming from locally grown produce. Among the most impressive items was the fig jam made with espresso and a lavender edge served on a charcuterie board of assorted cheeses and meats. It was absolutely the best combination on any

charcuterie I’ve tasted recently. I have searched for a fig jam recipe, but could not find any, so you’ll have to go to Circa 59 to try some. Ask the chef for his recipe and send it to me! The Macaroni and Cheese with Lobster ($16) appetizer was out of this world. The Duck Carnitas with Cornmeal Crepes ($15) was a great surprise. I thought carnitas applied to pork, but learned the word “carnitas” simply means “pulled meat.” My husband and I shared both dishes which were equally tasty. Lance Moreno, our waiter, couldn’t have done a better job at explaining all the dishes and taking photos of the food after

he served us. Tom ordered their Roquefort and Blue Cheese crusted Filet Mignon with Asparagus and Whipped Potatoes ($38). I ordered the Sea Scallops sautéed to perfection ($28). I am a scallop connoisseur and am really picky about them. These were superb. They were first pan

seared, then oven baked to set and absorb the juices. I love the casual poolside patio dining mixed with the upscale, deep red upholstery and crystal chandeliers inside. I highly recommend the Circa 59 restaurant for any occasion. You’ll be pleasantly surprised and will bring friends

back for more. For reservations or more information, call 760-778-6659 or go to www.psriviera.com/ circa59-restaurant for details. Circa 59 is located at 1600 N Indian Canyon Drive in Palm Springs.

LOcAL gAYS BAn RuSSiAn vOdKA Continued from Page 1 time. The General Director of the Centre for political information Aleksey Mukhin said that Russia is still a very traditional and conservative country. The Head of Moscow Pride and a gay activist Nikolay Alekseev told RT’s Anissa Naouai that “of course [the law] will not have a wide range of practice of being applied everywhere and on everyone.” “You cannot say that there is massive suppression or massive attacks against gay people on the streets. And that whenever you say that you are gay you will be killed or beaten,” Alekseev added. However, Russian gay activists are intending to take a case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) claiming that the law is meant to target www.desertstarweekly.com

specific individuals. Martin Andrews, a British national who is openly gay has been living in Russia for eight years. He calls the Russian gay community “thriving” and “excitable.” “There is a thriving, excitable and wonderful gay community which is happy here,” he said. “I think if you compare America, for example, you can’t look at San Francisco, Los Angeles, Palm Springs and New York and then look in the middle part, Texas. That’s what Russia is, especially Moscow. You’ve got the old meets new,” he said.

How long will you live? No one knows, but research suggests that happiness at home for the 50-plus set is the biggest predictor of longevity. Married and widowed females live longer and have happier lives than their single counterparts, says David Schramm, University of Missouri Extension specialist in human development and family studies. Healthy relationships have many side benefits, including lower mortality, better physical and mental health, greater financial well-being and less chance of being a perpetrator or victim of crimes, including domestic violence, he said. Schramm cites a recently published study by Christine Prouix, an assistant professor in the MU College of Human E n v i ro n m e n t a l S c i e n c e s (HES), showing that healthy relationships are more important than diet, smoking, exercise, drugs and even genetics in predicting longevity. The study, “The Longitudinal Associations between Marital Happiness, Problems and Self-Rated Health,” was co-authored by Linley Snyder-Rivas, an HES alumna. Prouix analyzed data from 707 continuously married adults who participated in the Marital Instability Over the Life Course panel study, a 20-year, nationwide research project started in 1980 with funding from the Social Security Administration’s Office

of Research and Statistics and the National Institute on Aging. Most study participants were Caucasian, had more than high school educations, and earned more than $55,000 in annual family income in 2000. Because of these characteristics, Prouix says the participants probably had some protection against marital and health challenges more commonly faced by people of different ethnicities or with less education or income. In commenting on the research, David Schramm observes that “relationship fitness” is just as important as exercise to physical well-being. A healthy relationship with a spouse or partner “spills over” into other relationships, including parent/child, adult child/aging parent, and relationships in the community and workplace. Therefore he recommends that partners “work out” on their marriage strenuously at least

Understanding the Growl

Dog Language Part One Growling is a valuable means of communication for our dog companions – something that we dog owners should appreciate and respect. It’s one of the few forms of “verbal” communication dogs possess. The growl is usually meant to intimidate – politely telling someone (or another dog) to back off.

When dogs are standing guard over property or valued resources like food and toys, you can expect to hear a threatening growl. The growl can also indicate that the dog is scared. Whatever the circumstance, if you ignore the warning and the growl, then it may be followed by a bite. In other words, growling

is meant to repel. So, our first instinct – to leave the dog alone – is a good one! Why a dog growls depends on the dog and the situation, but it’s usually associated with one of five types of aggression: when a dog is experiencing fear (fear-based aggression); when the dog is asserting his status as the alpha dog (dominance aggression); when the dog is on his own property to protect his turf from encroachment or

to guard some other valued resource (territorial aggression); when the dog is in pain (paininduced aggression); and bitches female dogs) may growl to ward off people or other dogs after delivering their puppies (maternal aggression). Dogs sometimes growl during play, such as during a rousing game of tug-of-war. A growl in this playful context is not generally meant as a threat. However, if the play gets too rough, it may be better to stop playing and let everyone calm down. Unfortunately, it’s all too common for dog owners to punish their dogs for growling – eliminating this innate ability to warn us before our canine companion snaps, sinking sharp teeth into something fleshy! The proper human response would be to stop dead in your tracks and begin to assess the situation. Never push a stressed dog past his ability to cope.
