Grammy Award-winning singer Helen Reddy returns to the Annenberg Theater Dec. 14 for a single performance of her one-woman show, “Home for the Holidays.”
Whether Exercising Her Pipes or Pushing Hillary for President, a ’70s Pop Icon Keeps Going
By Dean Lamanna PALMS SPRINGS – Helen Reddy has an affinity for this city that goes back to her Grammy Award-winning days in the 1970s, when she would steal away to the desert from the bustle of Hollywood for recharging respites in the sun. So she’s excited that her next performance date at the Annenberg Theater on Saturday, Dec. 14, titled “Home for the Holidays,” is bringing her back to the Coachella Valley’s relative

cool-season warmth. “I haven’t been to Palm Springs for so long,” said the pop music and feminist icon in a chat with Desert Star Weekly. “I’m really pleased that we’re going to stay overnight and maybe have a little lie-around by the pool the next day.” In actuality, it wasn’t terribly long ago — March 1, 2012, to be exact — that Reddy sold out the Annenberg upon her initial return to the stage after a
decade of retirement. At the time, her reasons for stepping back into the spotlight ranged from an impromptu duet at a birthday party for her older sister to simply missing making music. Her answer today? “Because I was bored staying home,” said Reddy, who had turned to motivational speaking and practicing clinical hypnotherapy after she stopped singing in 2002. “It was time for me to get back in there and have some fun.”
And fun she is having at 72 — playing a few dates at a time at comfortable venues in various parts of the country, rather than embarking on a full-on tour. “My sister is thrilled, and I think my kids are pretty pleased,” she said. “Most of my fans are very pleased. So, yeah, it’s been nice.” Also nice, in Reddy’s view, is the progress women have made in the push for gender equality since the early 1970s, when her number-one hit “I Am Woman”
became not only an eight-track tape-burner for Baby Boomers, but the adoptive anthem of the feminist movement. At the same time, the singer thinks much more needs to be accomplished, and indeed, feels that some of gains made by women in the last four decades have been “trampled on” in recent years. “We were doing a lot of marching there around 1970-71,” she said. “Things are moving, but Continues on Page 4
Story & Photos by Bruce Montgomery DESERT HOT SPRINGS – It was standing room only at the Desert Hot Springs City Council when it met at the Carl May Center on Tuesday, Dec. 3. It was a particularly momentous and emotional time for various city representatives and the residents in attendance. It marked Yvonne Parks’s final day
as mayor of DHS — a position in which she served from 2007-13 — and the swearing-in of former councilmember Adam Sanchez, Sr., as her replacement. Sanchez inherits a city beset by budgetary woes. Councilmembers Scott Matas, Joe McKee and Jan Pye were also sworn in. In one of her final official gestures, Parks presented
certificates of recognition to the DHS High School Golden Eagle Band, the city’s proud award winners under the eight-year direction of Brian McDaniel. The councilmembers recognized Parks for her six years of service. Parks then expressed her gratitude to the city staff. “I want to thank you all for working so diligently to keep this city moving,” she said.

‘Too Big to Fail’ Philosophy is Bad Biz
By Kevin Powell It was announced this week that the U.S. taxpayer (our government) had finished its sale of stock in General Motors (GM). At one point in 2012, the government owned nearly 26 percent of the company’s stock. The government gave GM $49.5 billion after it filed for bankruptcy. When all is said and done, We the People will lose about $10.5 billion in the deal. It is said that the bailout saved some 25,000 jobs at GM and helped protect other auto suppliers and auto manufacturers from financial ruin. Not so fast. After filing for bankruptcy, GM was allowed to carry forward $45 billion in tax losses.

There were sweetheart deals struck with some creditors like hedge funds that cost in the billions. Perhaps more shocking is the path down which GM has meandered. In 2000, GM was the largest U.S. corporation, with $189 billion in revenues and $6 billion in profits. In 2013, GM was still the seventhlargest U.S. corporation with $152 billion in revenues and $6.2 billion in profits. And to add insult to injury, GM stock is up 40 percent so far this year. So the company is roughly the same size it was 14 years ago. It is just as profitable as it was 14 years ago — and this is after stockholders in 2009 lost every penny, bondholders lost 70 to 80 percent of their capital and an endless line of creditors lost tens of billions for what they were owed for services and goods provided to GM. The argument of “Too Big
to Fail” is one of the worst ideas ever. If GM had gone under, other auto makers would have stepped up and hired their workers and begun producing cars again. So all the jobs that GM represented would not have been lost, as some claim. The biggest questions I have after all this: Why didn’t the government structure a better deal that assured the taxpayers would be repaid? Why wouldn’t taxpayers receive a guaranteed royalty until the loans were repaid with interest? If the taxpayers saved the company from financial ruin, shouldn’t there be a small, ongoing percentage of revenues paid to the Treasury? And sadly, some of these folks who structured the GM bailout are the same people who are going to be handling should be bailed out, let’s call Kevin Powell has been our healthcare decisions the folks from “Shark Tank” to a financial advisor for 28 years. in the future. By Larry Jameson RANCHO MIRAGE – Over 425 volunteers from the Read With Me program are reading to kids in the Coachella Unified School District. Coachella Valley School District Superintendent Dr. Darryl Adams has nominated the program for the prestigious Golden Bell Award. This award recognizes outstanding programs that have made a difference for students and are innovative, sustainable and can be replicated. “The Read W ith Me Volunteer program is an outstanding example of service to our students to brighten the future for all,” Dr. Adams said.
Founded in 2004 by local philanthropists Roberta and Clay Klein through Sacred Heart Church in Palm Desert, Read With Me received the Golden Bell Award on Saturday, Dec. 7, from the California School Boards Association at its annual conference and trade show in San Diego. The Read With Me program assists children with reading and comprehension at elementary schools in Coachella, Mecca and Thermal. Each week school is in session from November through April, volunteers board buses that take them to their assigned schools. The program started with volunteers from Sacred Heart
Church in Palm Desert and has expanded to include St. Francis of Assisi in La Quinta and Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church in Palm Desert, with the most recent addition of volunteers through Desert Springs Church in Palm Desert. The program is nonsectarian and people of all religions volunteer. The Desert Community Foundation, East Coachella Valley Schools fund, founded by the Kleins, funds program costs through the support of a number of philanthropists interested in giving children opportunities through education. What starts as a retiree or snowbird giving back, often turns into mentoring and more for the child — who often come from non-English speaking homes — as well as the volunteer who becomes part of the learning experience. “Roberta and Clay Klein and their Read With Me Angels and volunteers are impacting the lives of some of our country’s most needy students,” said Dr. Adams. “They do it with a smile and with a joy that enlightens student lives. It is truly a great program and one that should be replicated all over the nation.”

She’s extremely intelligent — very, very well-read — and she’s on top of everything. She was the first western female performer invited to sing in the People’s Republic of China. She has dined with the Prince of Wales and has even had a tulip named after her in Holland. Those were the perks of being one of the Me Decade’s

As a solo concert artist, Reddy played Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York, and in London, appeared at the Royal Albert Hall and the Palladium. She also made forays into theatre, film and television, at one point hosting her own onehour weekly primetime variety show. But her screen work, including a supporting part in the disaster movie “Airport 1975” and the top-billed role in the 1977 Disney fantasy “Pete’s Dragon” — both commercially successful — failed to make her a singular box office draw. Sitting Test May Predict Longevity Get Up, Stand Up—Don’t Give Up the Fight for Better Health
By Art Kunkin (Mr. Life Extension) Can you get up off the floor without using your hands, arms or knees to help you? A simple test that looks at how easy — or difficult — it is for you to sit down on the floor and then get back up may help predict how long you’re going to live, a new study has shown. Middle-aged and elderly people who needed to use both hands and knees to get up and down were almost seven times more likely to die within six years, compared to those who could spring up and down without support, Brazilian researchers
have reported in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. Doctors have long used the chair test — where a person stands up from a sitting position — to determine leg strength and lower body fitness of seniors. However, the new test is more difficult and can be used with a younger group. While the most important factor controlling the ease of getting down and then up is the ratio of muscle power to body weight, there are “other very relevant issues, including body flexibility, balance, and motor coordination,” said Claudio Gil

Soares de Araújo, a professor at Gama Filho University in Rio de Janeiro, who worked on the study. Ultimately the test gives a quick window into a patient’s ability to function from day to day. The researchers followed 2,002 adults aged 51 to 80 for an average of 6.3 years. Sixty-eight percent were men. At the outset, each study volunteer was asked to sit down on the floor and then get up, using the least amount of support from hands, knees and other body parts. The volunteers scored five points if they could sit down without touching their knees, legs, hands or arms on the floor and another five points if they could get back up unaided. They lost a point for each body part that was leaned on while getting down or up. So, people who could get down touching the floor with just one knee scored four points. If they needed to touch a hand and a knee on the floor as they were rising, they would lose two points for a score of three. If the December 11, 2013
volunteers looked wobbly on the way down or up, they lost half a point. The most agile ended up with a combined score of 10 while those who couldn’t get down or up at all were scored with a zero. If someone between the ages of 51 and 80 scores 10, “the chances of being alive in the next six years are quite good,” Araujo said. The test may be most valuable as a tool for primary care physicians to show patients they need to work on their health. CV Rep Mounts ‘The Story of My Life’
By Frieda Noone RANCHO MIRAGE – The holiday season brings the first musical production of Coachella Valley Repertory (CV Rep), “The Story of My Life,” to the nonprofit arts organization’s stage. The show runs through Dec. 22. Complete with a live musical ensemble, an original book and score, and a storyline of comforting proportions, the tale will likely resonate with audiences into the New Year. Like Frank Capra’s moving 1946 film, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” it offers a glimpse of the many shades of friendship and love that encompass the human spirit. The original book was written by Brian Hill, with music and lyrics by Neil Bartram, musical direction by Scott Storr and stage direction by CV Rep Artistic Director Ron Celona. “The Story of My Life” is a funny and deeply moving musical about lifelong best friends, Alvin (played by Chris Daniel) and Thomas (Craig McEldowney), who met when they were six years old. As time tests the bonds of their relationship, bestselling author Thomas calls on the only resource he has — his own stories of Alvin — to figure out where things went wrong. Nominated for four 2009
Drama Desk awards, including Outstanding Musical, “The Story of My Life” pays tribute to the power of friendship, the personal cost of success and the choices we make at the
turning point of our lives. Through music and song, the two central characters in the story recount their adventures, explore their past differences and ultimately discover what is at the base of
every friendship: Love. The Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre is located at 69930 Highway 111, Suite 116, in The Atrium. Tickets are $40 for the run of production;
evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees start at 2 pm. For more info, call 760.296.2966 or visit cvrep.org.

Two Bunch Palms Perfects Art of Escape
By Pamela Price DESERT HOT SPRINGS – Two Bunch Palms Spa Resort, always highly rated in the spa world, hasn’t changed all that much since the mid-20th century. Nestled discreetly south of Two Bunch Palms Trail, east of Palm Drive, this legendary hideaway has lured celebrities for decades. But that’s the old news. The latest? The property has undergone carefully planned improvements that have transformed this vintage hot spring location — from its onsite cuisine to its salubrious spa services featuring esoteric body and skincare products — into a sleek statement about the art of escape. This is light years away from the era when Two Bunch touted the patronage of Al Capone as part of its promotional strategy. (Capone, one of the most infamous criminal characters of the last century, apparently came here to cleanse himself of his own unhealthy activities.) The updated spa scene, where therapeutic mineral waters bubble naturally from the earth, continues to
revitalize guests who flock here for privacy and world-class spa treatments. And a propertywide “green philosophy” has been instituted — starting with Essense, the resort’s top-notch restaurant, where farm-to-table cuisine has rejuvenated the menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. An interior facelift has completely refreshed and brightened the dining space, adding plenty of natural light and green plants. Blond wood floors, comfortable seating and expansive, unobstructed mountain views now bring the outside in. At the eatery’s entrance, a dining table is centered by a live tree. There is nothing artificial here — and that includes the ingredients used to prepare specialties from Penne Al Fresca ($12) with organic greens, house-made fromage blanc, extra virgin olive oil and capers, to the freshly prepared Potato Latkes with Braised Apples and Garlic Tzatziki ($7). Under the direction of CEO Kevin Kelly, Two Bunch Palms Spa Resort has instituted a sweeping “green philosophy.” (Photo by The menu has been Pat Krause) influenced by Adelle Davis, America’s foremost nutritionist time. Story & Photos by Bruce Montgomery DESERT HOT SPRINGS – The Skyborne master-planned residential community, together with Family Services of the Desert (FSOD), hosted the Third Annual Skyborne 1/2 Marathon & 5K Run/ Walk on Saturday, Dec. 7. The event was a fundraiser for the nonprofit FSOD / Food Now. Despite extremely chilly weather, dozens of people came out to tackle the scenic, 13.1 mile course, which was paved and ascended a gentle rise through undisturbed desert vegetation. The downhill finish took in breathtaking vistas of the mountains, windmills and a view of the Coachella Valley extending all the way to the Salton Sea. The USATF Certified course was under the direction of Klein and Clark Sports (kleinclarksports.com). Desert Hot Springs Mayor Adam Sanchez, Councilmember Jan Pye and developer Jim Kozak were among the notables on hand to cheer the participants on. FSOD is a nonprofit organization that protects the most vulnerable members of society by confronting issues of child abuse and domestic violence within the family. Since 1959, FSOD has been providing affordable, quality counseling and family support services to Eastern Riverside County residents. Over the past 50 years, the agency has made a significant impact in the lives of tens of thousands of men, women and children by providing access to mental health and family support services, regardless of income. Get Psych’d Making Tracks with Jimi & Big Star By Robert Kinsler This week, some yesteryear classics provide ear-worthy treats for music fans. So indulge the season of tuneful giving — whether it’s to others or to yourself.
Title: “Psych: The Musical” (Universal Studios ) Listen if you enjoy: Psych (the popular USA Network comedy drama) Set to air on USA Network as a two-hour special event on Friday, Dec. 15, “Psych: The Musical” (out on DVD Dec. 17) successfully fuses the series’ longrunning, comedy-minded police
procedural backdrop with that of a modern-day musical. Stars James Roday (Shawn) and Dulé Hill (Gus), as well as the regular cast members and notable guest stars (including Ally Sheedy, Barry Bostwick and Anthony Rapp), do plenty of singing and dancing in a story centered around a doomed Jack the Ripper musical staged in Santa Barbara. “Psych” creator Steve Franks wrote the episode and lyrics working with composer Adam Cohen to complete the musical featuring more than a dozen songs. Star shouldn’t be too hard on themselves. The power pop outfit failed to chart with its 1972 debut despite widespread critical acclaim, and it was only years later that Big Star’s impact began to hit home — thanks to the efforts of groups such as the Bangles, R.E.M. and The Replacements, who acknowledged their lasting influence. Drew DeNicola’s involving new 111-minute documentary “Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me” is now on DVD and features the full-length story of the group, as well as a wealth of bonus material of interest to fans of the band — including archival footage. By Larry Jameson INDIO – He’s a multiplatinum artist and entertainment icon. And on Jan. 11, the reincarnated Snoop Dogg, now known as Snoop Lion, brings his new name to the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Special Events Center stage. With over 20 years in the industry, Snoop has stayed at the forefront of popular culture through hit records, brand partnerships, innovative digital strategies and philanthropy. His new moniker stems from a recording trip to Jamaica, where he found a spiritual awakening through the people and culture. His “Reincarnation” project includes a reggae-influenced album, a feature film chronicling
his career, a photo book and a self-sustainable gardening initiative named Mind Gardens. Quite possibly the most recognizable aspect of Snoop’s career is his rapping and songwriting. Debuting in 1993, his “Doggystyle” landed at number-one on the Billboard 200 and Billboard Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Song charts and went platinum four times. Currently, he is working on his last solo studio album under his treasured name Snoop Dogg. Tickets for Snoop’s 8 p.m. performance start at $39 and are available at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, via 800.827.2946 or online at fantasyspringsresort. com. www.desertstarweekly.com

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Beloved Disney Animated Classics Re-Gifted
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman Christmas is just around the corner, so here are a few DVD suggestions for the youngsters on your gift list. The whole family can have a Dickens of a time with the
sparkling 30th Anniversary Edition of Disney’s “Mickey’s Christmas Carol,” based on the classic tale of a miser named Ebenezer Scrooge (played appropriately in the animated feature by Scrooge McDuck, voiced by veteran actor
Alan Young). Eventually he learns the true meaning of the Christmas season after being visited by several wise ghosts (Goofy and Jiminy Cricket). He also learns to embrace the true meaning of this wonderful holiday — just in

the nick of time. Mickey is Bob Cratchet, Scrooge’s hard-working and under-appreciated clerk. The Blu-ray + DVD +Digital combination packet comes with plenty of extra content that includes a sing-along with Mickey to such songs as “Deck the Halls,” “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” plus five animated shorts — an all-new “Yodelberg,” “The Hockey Champ,” “Pluto’s Christmas Tree,” “The Art of Skiing” and “Corn Chips.” Disney’s “Winnie the Pooh: A Very Merry Pooh Year” is now on Blu-ray and Digital Copy for the first time. This full-length animated treat is perfect for the holiday season because it celebrates the importance of friendship and features Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Roo and all the wonderful characters who reside the Hundred Acre Wood. In the story, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, but Rabbit will only discover the true spirit of the season after his pals make misguided New Year’s resolutions to change — with hilarious and heartfelt results. This holiday DVD brims with beloved characters, delightful songs and plenty of bonus goodies. Disney has just released “The Great Muppet Caper & Muppet Treasure Island 2 Collection,” so your family can enjoy twice
the laughter, twice the fun and twice as many Muppets. These pair of comedy capers is packed with mirth and mayhem and features all-star Muppet casting, including Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, Fozzie, Gonzo and many more. The bountiful bonus extras include a FrogE-Oke sing-along, “The Tale of the Story Beyond the Tail” (in which the cast and crew take a look back at the making of “Treasure Island 2”), plus audio commentary with Gonzo, Rizzo and Brian Henson. Also, just in time for the holidays, Disney has released “Planes,” last summer’s animated hit about a little crop duster plane with big dreams of becoming an international speed racer. The Disney combo pack is filled with plenty of additional bonus features like deleted scenes and “Top Ten Flyers” — a countdown of the world’s most famous aviators. Little girls, and big girls, too, for that matter, will love “The Little Mermaid,” now on Blu-ray for the first time ever. The combo pack is filled with over three hours of splashing bonus features, such as a behind-the-scenes look at Disney animation narrated by Disney’s top animators, a peek at a deleted character (Harold the Merman) and more. Have a jolly holiday with Mickey and all of his pals! www.desertstarweekly.com

PALM DESERT – Xavier Prep (0-0 DVL, 0-1 Overall) struggled in the rebounding column last Monday, giving up 46 boards to Rancho Christian (0-0 Freelance. 1-0 Overall) at Xavier Prep High School. Three Eagles players combined to score 38 points — more than the entire Saints team. Remarkably, the Eagles held the Saints to only nine first half points. Xavier Prep plays against the Desert Christian Academy Conquerors (0-0 in Victory League, 0-1 Overall) on Dec. 3. and at the Temecula Prep High School Patriots (0-0 in Victory League, 0-2 Overall) on Dec. 6. The Golden Eagles go on the road to play the Yucca Valley-based Joshua Springs High School Lightning on Dec. 10.
THERMAL – The Arabs (0-0 in DVL, 2-1 Overall) started the season off well, but their first blemish came in the form of a 24-point road loss to undefeated Yucca Valley (0-0 in De Anza, 2-0 Overall) on Friday, Dec. 6. The game was close in the first half, but what did the Arabs in was their defense allowing 52 second-half points — almost as much as the Arabs scored the entire game. Coachella Valley allowed four players to score 15-plus points, with a solid 20 coming from Trojans guard Trenton Pecaro. The tip time of the Arabs road game on Dec. 10 against Hemet High School precludes meeting our press deadline and will not be reported. The Arabs have a home game against Desert Mirage High School on Dec. 12. On Dec. 17, DVL play begins, as Coachella Valley travels to Cathedral City High School to take on the Lions.
RIVERSIDE – Palm Desert’s (0-0 in DVL, 3-1 Overall) three-game winning streak came to a halt against Martin Luther King (King) in the championship of the Beaumont Tip-Off Classic on Saturday, Dec. 7, at King High School. Despite the loss, Palm Desert senior guards Andrew Clark and Daniel McCown earned All-Tournament honors. The Wolves had earned their place in the championship by beating two of the Desert Valley League’s better teams — Indio High School and La Quinta High School. Palm Desert’s upcoming games are both at home. On Dec. 13, the Aztecs take on Lake Forest-based El Toro High School and square off on Dec. 17 against Xavier Prep High School.

TEMECULA – Chaparral (0-0 in Southwestern League, 3-1 Overall) had three players score in double figures as they defeated Indio (0-0 in DVL, 3-2 Overall) by 13 points at a neutral site in the Beaumont TipOff Classic consolation game on Saturday, Dec. 7. In spite of averaging 27 points a game, Rajahs guard Isiah Thomas only scored 11 points; William Thigpen added 11, also, for the Rajahs. Go-to scorer Michael Scott put in seven buckets for the Pumas and finished with 19 points. Indio’s next game against Desert Mirage High School is Dec. 10; however, the tip time precludes meeting our press deadline and will not be reported. On Dec. 17, the Rajahs go on the road to play La Quinta High School in both schools’ Desert Valley League opener.
Upcoming Games to Watch On Dec. 12, the Shadow Hills Knights open the first round of the Imperial Tournament against the Imperial Tigers at a site not yet disclosed. The Palm Springs Indians will finally start their season this week, opening their schedule on Dec. 12 at Desert Hot Springs High School against the Golden Eagles. On Dec. 13, the Indians play at Twentynine Palms High School against the Wildcats. The La Quinta Blackhawks do not play again until their Dec. 17 matchup with Indio. Also on Dec. 17, Xavier Prep goes on the road to play the Aztecs at Palm Desert High School.
