There were over 25 items and one of the items was an antique gold Coke register that was completely restored and the drawer for money and the prices on top
worked perfectly. The other items were just as interesting to bid on. There was a magician who had a young girl up front doing the Macarena dance with his arms. Funny. By Christopher Weber LOS ANGELES (AP) - A powerful flare-up on the western edge of Southern California’s largest and most destructive wildfire sent residents fleeing Sunday, as wind-fanned flames churned through old-growth brush in canyons and along hillsides toward coastal towns. Crews with help from a fleet water-dropping planes and helicopters saved homes as unpredictable gusts sent the blaze deeper into residential foothill areas northwest of Los Angeles that haven’t burned in decades. New evacuations were ordered as the fire sent up an enormous plume near Montecito and Carpinteria, seaside areas in Santa Barbara County that had been under
fire threat for days and were now choked with smoke. “The winds are kind of squirrely right now,” said county fire spokesman Mike Eliason. “Some places the smoke is going straight up in the air, and others it’s blowing sideways. Depends on what canyon we’re in.” The department posted a photo of one residence engulfed in flames. It’s unclear whether other structures burned. Thousands of homes and businesses in the county were without power. The air thick with acrid smoke, even residents of areas not under evacuation orders took the opportunity to leave, fearing another shutdown of U.S. 101, a key coastal highway that
was closed intermittently last week. Officials handed out masks to residents who stayed behind in Montecito,
the wealthy hillside enclave that’s home to celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bridges and Rob Lowe.

The Fierros Family - Pegasus Family of the Year. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Pegasus Therapeutic Riding presented its 23rd Annual Riders Awards Luncheon complete with Santa Clause. Clients got to sit on Santa’s knee and parents were busy with cell phones taking pictures. The kid’s big smiles tell it all. The event was held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Emerald Ballroom on Sunday, December 10th. The whole ballroom was filled with parents,
teachers, and clients. Some clients are in wheelchairs but still dance with parents help. Everyone was treated to a delicious lunch of turkey, chicken or spaghetti. Dan McGrath served as Emcee again this year with Alicia Gomez doing the translations into Spanish. Michael Capitanelli did his usual fun DJ dances, especially for the kids. He had the whole dance floor filled with dancers doing the Macarena,
YMCA and more. He had a lot of the kids and adults competing for the twist dance. He knows how to get the place jumping and the kids enjoying it on the dance floor. It’s a special time for them and they can show they can dance too. There was no silent auction this year. They tried something new with a very large raffle of over 40 gifts. You could buy just one ticket or an arm’s length of tickets. Dan McGrath
said to get someone with long arms like his to buy the arm’s length of tickets. Some of the clients get a stuffed toy as they entered. There was a lot of dancing before the awards ceremony where all clients get a medal. They are so proud of their medals and the smiles are huge and beaming. There are always a couple special awards each year. The Pegasus Family of the year 2017 was THe Fierros Family

There were special guests, fabulous entertainment, and a huge silent auction. Guests were entertained
with D J Baz during the cocktail hour where appetizers of sandwich sliders of Angus beef and roasted vegetables and French fries in a buffet style. The first singer was Julie Garnye who had the audience in the palm of her hand with her fabulous voice. She performed on a small stage filled with Poinsettias’. ability to take a song and make it hilarious. I love her song I want to be Rich Famous and powerful that had the guests clapping and laughing aloud. Her years as a stage performer makes her a great performer. The special guest of the night was Amazon Eve that stands very tall above everyone else. Therefore, the name Amazon Eve, aka, Erika Ervin. She towered above founders of Sanctuary Palm Springs, David Rothmiller and L D Thompson.
I asked why the name Holiday Socks and they said it was because of the silent auction items, Christmas Socks. There were also wreaths for sale. The bidding on the live auctions met with a lot of applause when the bids went higher and higher. The tree went for $1,200. One of my favorites was the big Party that came with 5 hours of clean up after the party, a first I think. A week-long trip to Buenos Aires and a $1000 gift card
went for $4,700 and there was more. All proceeds went to Sanctuary house where kids can transition from foster care at 18 to a home with other kids who need to learn about living in the real world until age 21. It’s not a free ride as they have to work, go to school and keep the house clean and neat. It’s a safe house where they get the help they need and are with other kids going thru the same problems.

HOA Election Glitches (part 2)
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: Our HOA recently held elections. I was a write-in candidate. I won a slot on the Board, but was disqualified because I did not notify the association in advance that I was a write in candidate and will accept the role. We have election rules, but no one knows when they were voted on and approved (no minutes can be produced.) Does the law require write-in candidates to provide advance written notification? Dear T.F.: Civil Code 5105 requires associations to have written election rules. Those rules must be passed pursuant to the rule change process prescribed by Civil Code 4360. If there are no minutes, and no copy of a notice to the membership about the proposed election rules, they might not actually be “operating rules” under Civil Code 4340(a). Did the election rules require that writein candidates notify the HOA in advance that they would serve if elected? Civil Code 5105(b) says election rules may allow write-in candidates or nominations from the floor, implying that, in the absence of an authorizing rule, write-in candidates or nominations from the floor are not allowed. Rules should address the issue. Thanks for your question, Kelly

Mr. Richardson: Recently, my HOA proposed to change the CC&Rs as regarding board
Dear. E.M.: The law does not require directors to be association members. From time to time I see bylaws which do not require directors to be members of the association they govern. This seems incongruous, since nonmembers, if allowed to be directors, would be voting upon assessments they do not pay, and enforcing governing documents which apply to the members, but not them. When updating bylaws, associations should not only look at membership as an eligibility minimum, but also consider other issues, such as assessment delinquency, or if the member is in litigation against the association. E.M., read on for another eligibility issue. Thanks, Kelly
As I’m writing this, massive fires are still raging in southern California. If you had to flee your home with just a few minutes notice, would you be prepared? It has been a year of many disasters. Thus, we cannot take for granted that it will not happen to us. Preparing to leave your home quickly requires having a bag of the things that can secure your family for an unknown period of time. Beyond having a traditional survival bag ready to go -- one with water, a first aid kit, some power bars to eat, you should also have, a portable solar panel, a weather radio, flashlights, self-defense items, medications and warm clothing, it is important to have your financial documents for what comes ahead. Start with cash, the amount is up to you. Remember, cash is king in a crisis. ATMs may not be working. Credit card machines might be offline. Cash is the most easily traded commodity. Not everyone can accept Gold or Silver coins. Good luck paying for things with bitcoin when your laptop just melted and cell towers are down! It could take months to get all that stuff sorted out. I would suggest a few hundred dollars or a few thousand, if you can afford to do so. Even though you may get assistance with shelter and basic necessities, there are many things that you will need. which may not be easily accessible. Most importantly, you
will need things to prove your identify, so consider copies of your social security card, driver’s license and passport. If you have a passport, it can especially help you if you must travel outside the country on short notice. Getting an extra copy at the post office is not that expensive. You will definitely want a universal form of ID. Once the cash is covered, you will also want to have copies of all your key financial documents and records. Things to include are Insurance policies and critical items such as physical stock certificates, paper bonds, or any other financial instruments, including a list of key account numbers. By having recent statements, it will help to prove balances. Personal documents to include are your Social Security card, marriage certificate, deed, and car title are all important to have with you.. Most people want their family pictures, thus storing them on a thumb drive, not only fits into your survival bag easily, but you will have saved these memories forever. The ideal would be having electronic scans all organized on a small thumb drive with security encryption. Perhaps two, just for redundancy. Your Survival bag should contain the basic gear you’ll need to last for a short-term crisis or waiting period. It will make life easier until recovery begins. You can consider storing this bag and some of these things, in a fireproof safe. I recommend having a bag ready to go inside your safe, one that you can just
Dear Kelly: Our HOA elected the husband of our property manager to our Board. I perceive enormous conflict of interest issues including confidentiality issues, undue influence, privileged information and more. We just were informed (by his wife, the association’s manager), that he is running again. Can you please comment? R.D., Fountain Valley
Dear R.D.: Just as I believe associations should not do business with their members, I also believe associations should not hire members as their managers. The conflict of interest potential, and appearance of conflict, are too great. The member-manager is in a difficult position because some members will assume the manager is managing to benefit the manager’s own building, whether or not it is true. When the manager is a spouse or co-owner of a director, the
problem becomes extreme. Under the 2013 appellate ruling in Friars Village v. Hansing, associations can adopt election rules which include board eligibility conditions, so long as they do not contradict the bylaws. I think board eligibility standards are best found in bylaws, but if the association has insufficient participation to amend them, it can amend its election rules by adding eligibility standards. Some disqualifications could include delinquency, unresolved violations, or a coowner already on the board. Best regards, Kelly Kelly G. BLM Suspends Natural Gas Waste Standards
By Desert Star Staff DENVER – On Thursday, the Bureau of Land Management suspended a rule designed to limit the waste of natural gas on publicly-owned lands until January of 2019. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, delaying the rule could mean a loss of $330 million worth of natural gas or more, enough energy to meet the heating and cooking needs of one-and-ahalf million homes for a year.
Gwen Lachelt, a La Plata County Commissioner, and the executive director of Western Leaders Network, says the delay also means fewer royalties for taxpayers on the lost natural gas. She adds the move could also have significant health implications. “It’s also very important to the Four Corners region where I live, where we live under the largest methane cloud in North America because of the tens of thousands of natural gas wells
that are leaking,” she says. The Western Energy Alliance welcomed the delay, in part because companies now won’t have to pay for equipment needed to prevent waste while the Trump administration works to roll back protections. The energy group also promised operators will continue their efforts to reduce emissions in the long-term. The BLM’s methane standards were modeled on
policies pioneered in Western states like Colorado and Wyoming with the support of local elected officials, leading oil and gas companies and environmental groups. Lachelt says when lost gas is captured, it can be brought to market to benefit both energy companies and taxpayers. “The majority of the companies are finding that they’re actually getting a return on their investment,”
she explains. “And so, we’re seeing more natural gas in the pipeline, we’re seeing more profits for oil and gas companies, and we’re seeing a better return for the taxpayers.” According to tech firm ICF International, since the methane rule was first conceived in 2013, almost $2 billion worth of natural gas has been lost on public and tribal lands - largely due to leaks, flaring, and the intentional release of methane.
Category 5 Hurricane puts Helix™ Steel Technology to the Test By Desert Star Staff INDIGO BAY, Sint Maarten, - When Hurricane Irma hit the Caribbean island of St. Maarten with sustained winds of 185 mph (298 kph) on September 6, 2017, the devastation was incredible. Most buildings, including concrete structures, suffered extensive damage. The Indigo Green development was a notable exception – their structures survived virtually unscathed. Indigo Green wanted to build the most safe, comfortable and disaster-resistant homes possible and used the best technologies and construction techniques available. One key to this was specifying concrete with the maximum impact resistance and strength. For concrete slabs, stairs, and walls, Helix™ Steel’s patented
Helix Micro Rebar was used to almost double the shear strength of the concrete as well as significantly increase its durability and crack resistance. “Using Helix Micro Rebar led to more durable concrete and provided much-needed hurricane resistance,” noted Rene Lepine, Managing Director at Indigo Green. “Helix technology was a key factor in the way our buildings survived Hurricane Irma’s destructive winds so well. In addition, we were able to save considerable time during construction since much less steel work was required.” According to Helix Steel CTO Luke Pinkerton, “Helix Micro Rebar technology was originally invented to provide blast resistance for concrete structures. This makes our

Donations Pour in to Help MI Community Protect Its Water
By Desert Star Staff OSCEOLA TWP., Mich. – A small Michigan community will receive an early holiday gift in the form of donations from around the world as it tries to protect its water. Osceola Township Treasurer Martin Nieman says the fight to keep Nestlé from expanding its groundwater pumping operation has left the tiny community of fewer
than 2,000 people drowning in debt. When he got word the online community “sumofus. org” had raised $30,000 to help with the legal fees, he was speechless, because he says the situation was dire. “The township would probably have to declare bankruptcy, basically,” he warns. “Because what other choice do you have? We’ve used just about all
the resources of income that we’ve had to fight this.” Nestlé sued the township after it denied a permit for the booster station that would allow it to more than double the amount of groundwater it withdraws. While Nestle says the operation will not cause environmental damage, local residents say the current pumping rate is depleting streams and harming wildlife.
Angus Wong with SumOfUs says the donations came from across the country and as far away as Europe. He says many people were outraged to learn that under state law, Nestlé would pay less than one dollar per million gallons to bottle, pump, and sell Michigan’s water from this site. “This is a really true David versus Goliath story, that a multi-billion-dollar corporation is suing a small township who are just exercising their democratic right,” he says. Wong says the situation with Nestlé and the Flint water crisis have both served to highlight what a critical resource
water is for communities in Michigan and around the world. “As we saw in the last couple of years, water is life,” he adds. “People care about water everywhere and people are driven when a big corporation like Nestle is just trying to take more water for no money and sell it elsewhere for great profit.” In addition to the donations, nearly 200,000 people have signed a petition calling on Nestlé to drop the lawsuit, and protesters brought copies of those petitions to a hearing last month. The judge in the case has not yet issued a decision.

Delaying Net-Metering Rule Doesn’t Make It Better
By Desert Star Staff AUGUSTA, Maine – Implementation of a new rule for calculating electric bills for customers with wind or solar power has been delayed, but conservation groups say it would hurt families and businesses. The Public Utilities Commission announced Tuesday that the rule, originally set to go into effect in January, has been postponed until the end of April. The rule rolls back net metering, which pays customers for the power they generate that is fed back into the electric grid. But Sean Mahoney, executive vice president of the Conservation Law Foundation, said the delay will not lessen the impact on a system that gives consumers incentives to install wind or solar. “The rule would ultimately gut the incentives entirely,”
Mahoney said. “And in fact, not only would it get rid of the incentives, it would impose a new charge on solar ratepayers.” A legal challenge to the new rule is scheduled for a court hearing next week. Critics of net metering say the dramatic decrease in the cost of wind and solar installations makes incentives obsolete. But according to Mahoney, the new rule discriminates against people who generate some of their own power by charging for the electricity they’re no longer getting from electric utilities. “We don’t do that for people who put in insulation or dry their clothes in the summertime outside or whose kids go off to college and no longer have six different iPhones and computers plugged in,” he said. He argued that the new rule
The solar industry is one of the fastest-growing job sectors in Maine. (MariaGodfrida/Pixabay) should be invalidated, because assessing those charges would violate various state laws. While the changing economics of distributed generation such as wind and solar may warrant adjustments
to net metering, Mahoney said he believes the incentives still are needed because the switch to renewables benefits everyone. “It reduces the overall costs on the system, it
increases independence,” he said; “and using renewable energy is much better than using oil or coal.” About forty states now have net metering policies in place.
Desert Businesses Work to Protect SoCal National Monuments
Billboards like this one are popping up across the Inland Empire to build support for California’s desert monuments against any federal attempt to shrink them. By Desert Star Staff ALBANY, N.Y. – Reporting of sewage spills into New York waterways has improved, but a new report says substantial investment is needed to stem the flow. The analysis of Department of Environmental Conservation data says from May 2013 to last July, there were more than 10,500 sewage overflows in New York, totaling more than $3.8 billion. Liz Moran, the water and natural resources director for Environmental Advocates of New York, says in one important way, the large number of reported spills is a good thing. “Reporting has actually
increased by 273 percent,” she notes. “And we think that this is because DEC finalized the regulations implementing the sewage pollution right-to-know law.” But she cautions the data also shows underreporting is still a problem, and it underscores the need for state investment in water infrastructure. The Sewage Right-to-Know law went into effect in 2013 and requires reporting of untreated sewage discharges. Moran credits the state with making significant progress in investing in water and sewer systems, but she says more is needed.
“We’re still falling short of an identified funding gap for sewage infrastructure of $800 million, and we feel that this is the year to fill that gap,” she says. She emphasizes that the same amount needs to be invested annually for several years until the problem of sewage overflow is brought under control. But the investments can’t stop there. Moran notes that meeting both wastewater and drinking water needs across New York State will require an estimated $80 billion over the next 20 years. “We have to come close to meeting that because it
Breanne Dusastre, director of marketing for the 29 Palms Inn, says Trump’s moves to cut the size of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments show he’s unconcerned with the effect on local communities. “While Sand to Snow has been mentioned as being off the review list,” she says, “until the same happens for Mojave Trails and Castle Mountains, given the actions that the administration has taken, there’s certainly concern for the future of our monuments.” She adds that since President Barack Obama created the three desert monuments in February 2016, they’ve seen a major influx of tourism. Joshua Tree National Park is breaking attendance records, and many are exploring the nearby national monuments year-
round, even in the summer. Mojave Trails was one of 27 national monuments under review by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, but it was not mentioned in his final report released on Tuesday. Jerry Mattos chair of the Joshua Tree Gateway Tourism Committee says people are drawn to the Mojave Desert, as one of the last great open spaces left in the West. “We out in the desert don’t have a lot of industries around, and we would like tourism to become our main industry here,” he says. “So, it’s very important.” Tribes, businesses and conservation groups are suing the administration, claiming the Antiquities Act gives the president the right to create national monuments, but not to shrink them.

Deep Vein Thrombosis: A Pain That Cannot Be Ignored
By Desert Star Staff Fifty-three-year-old Bernie McKay never would have guessed that the pain he thought was a simple muscle cramp was actually a serious medical condition that could have stopped him in his tracks forever. Bernie, who leads an active lifestyle and works in a hospital, experienced severe cramping in the back of his left thigh one morning while walking into work. The pain became so severe that he rushed himself to the emergency department, knowing that something wasn’t right. After a series of consultations and tests, he was diagnosed as having deep vein thrombosis, or DVT. DVT affects approximately 900,000 people in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and while a clot can form anywhere, it usually occurs in the legs or pelvis. Sometimes part of the blood clot can break off and travel to your lungs, which can cause a pulmonary embolism, a serious and potentially deadly condition. Doctors typically diagnose DVT through tests such as an ultrasound or blood tests. First line of treatment can consist of medications and
compression stockings, but these options don’t actually remove or dissolve the clot. Many DVT blood clots can be absorbed by the body over time with the help of blood thinners; however, as long as the clot is present, it can cause permanent damage to the valves in the vein, leading to chronic pain and swelling called postthrombotic syndrome (PTS). Another treatment option that physicians may consider for their patients is a medical procedure called a mechanical thrombectomy. This procedure can help quickly restore blood flow by removing the clot altogether, thus reducing the amount and duration of medications a patient needs to take, and may help prevent future complications. “Recent medical advances are allowing more and more patients to have blood clots removed using minimally invasive procedures,” said Dr. Kush Desai, Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “Some patients, like Bernie, may be candidates for a mechanical thrombectomy, which uses a special catheter designed to help break up and physically remove all or portions of the clot.” Only half of the people who

However, there are risk factors that you should be aware of as they can increase your chances of developing DVT: • Treatment for cancer; • Prolonged lack of movement such as long distance travel or long periods of bed rest; • A personal or family history of blood clots; • Older age; • Pregnancy.
Understanding the risk factors and being aware of various treatment options can help reduce your chance of developing a dangerous blood clot and the serious health complications that may be associated with it. “With such a short recovery time, the procedure allowed me to spend time with my family and friends -- without having to take medications for the rest of my life,” said Bernie. “I’m more active than I was before, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.” There are risks

Daylight Provides Benefits to Kids
An extra 40 minutes a day spent outdoors can make a difference in reducing a child’s risk of becoming nearsighted. (V. Carter) By Desert Star Staff Telling little ones to “go play outside” isn’t just good for a parent’s sanity - time spent in the daylight also is beneficial for children’s sight. About five percent of school-age kids in the U.S. have myopia, or nearsightedness, a condition the World Health Organization says is rising to epidemic proportions around the globe. Karen Woodhouse, director of the group Eyes on Learning, says researchers believe higher myopia rates
might be connected to children spending less time outdoors. “There’s a lot of reasons that might contribute to that,” she says. “One of them is that with the devices nowadays, the screens and whatever it is that they’re playing indoors, they’re not just going outside like we did back in the day. And so, the amount of light that is getting into their eye has decreased.” Woodhouse says research has shown that an extra 40 minutes a day spent outdoors can make a difference in
reducing a child’s risk of becoming nearsighted. She notes it’s something parents may need to be vigilant about this time of the year, when the days are shorter, the weather gets colder and it becomes harder to pull kids away from their screen time. When left undiagnosed, Woodhouse says myopia can affect kids’ school experience. They might not be able to fully see the whiteboard in the classroom or what the teacher is doing,
and start to miss things. “And that’s when kids get distracted, they figure they’re not understanding or they’re not getting it,” she warns. “And unfortunately, that may result in some behavior problems and potentially some misdiagnosis of attention deficit disorder, or some dyslexia problems. A lot of times, that’s just related to the fact that they’re not seeing well.” But she notes children with myopia may not be aware that they can’t see as well as their peers. She encourages parents to speak with their child’s teacher about possible signs of a vision problem. “If they’re squinting, if they need to get closer to the board, if they’re being distracted or behaviorally not doing what they normally would do, if they complain that their eyes are tired or they get headaches, or they’re rubbing their eyes regularly - those are all things that can be really good cues for parents,” explains Woodhouse. She adds that vision screenings are recommended starting at a young age, whether through a pediatrician or at school.
Education Tools to Help Kids Succeed at School By Desert Star Staff In today’s tech-driven world, the classroom is evolving rapidly. Students equipped with the right tools will get a leg up on their studies and long-term success. So, what’s effective in the world of educational tools today? Check out these innovative items. Music Made Easier: Music has always helped children learn and succeed in their other classes. However, it can now be easier than ever before, as new tools have made learning to play easier. For example, the LK-265 keyboard from Casio has 61 full-size, touch-sensitive keys with a Key Lighting System that illuminates keys to indicate which notes to play, making learning easier. Combined with its intuitive Step-Up Lessons, kids can quickly learn to play both built-in songs, as well as favorites downloaded through a free compatible app called Chordana. Science on Your Phone: The scientific process has never been so user-friendly. Check out free apps for Android and iPhone that support science education -- from tools that give young scientists an opportunity to organize their hypothesis, notes and observations on self-driven scientific trials, to those that offer step-bystep directions and video demonstrations of experiments. survive today’s math classes but to thrive in them, students will need the advanced features of a next-generation graphing calculator, such as Casio’s fx-CG50 Prizm, which will support their education through middle school, high school and into college. With Natural Textbook Display and an intuitive icon-based menu, students will find it easy-to-use, and its brand-new 3D Graph Drawing and improved catalog

New desktop and mobile apps make it easier for students to organize, sort and share notes, as well as quickly reference them later when it’s time to cram for that exam. Many platforms offer
free basic accounts, with the option of upgrading for more features. However, doing so may come with a subscription fee, which may be worth it depending on a student’s note-taking style and needs. HOROSCOPES ARIES
The season’s about to change again and so must our rhythms in terms of the sun, our health, diets, exercise and plans for our day. Through this Mercury retrograde, we assess and think along new lines, preparing for the coming changes of light, shadows, cold, warmth and color. These changes are reflected within ourselves, too. Relationships need extra tending so loved ones don’t feel cold, alone, withdrawn and left out.
TAURUS You are learning new things, listening to speakers, gathering information. Always serious and disciplined. Your life’s task is informing and illuminating the minds of humanity. It would be good to consider what is playful for you, what brings enjoyment, fun, what calls forth your lightness and sense of spontaneity? Perhaps you need a warm pool to swim in.
GEMINI Family, whether biological, friends, group (esoteric?), colleagues, etc. begins to matter more and more. Harmony is your focus with a touch of compromise (not much). Something’s not complete with someone. Maybe you need to talk or visit to bring forth a new step in relationships. Listen quietly to others until you understand their essential message.
DECEMBER 13 – 19, 2017 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES
All of this brings love forth – your Venusian task.
CANCER Make contact. These two words have a depth most don’t understand. Making contact releases Love. The contact must be true, real and intentional, from the heart, heart to heart, Soul-to-Soul. The Love being released liberates everyone. However, someone must begin the process and that someone is you. Do this ceaselessly, quietly, connecting with all the kingdoms.
LEO You must not only create a new plan concerning finances and resources, but a new state of values must also come forth also. You may want to communicate more deeply with close friends and/ or intimates who share your values. It’s important to know what values you both hold in common. What are your desires & aspirations for the future, based on these values?
VIRGO You need to come out of the shadows and into the light. Standing in shadows, perhaps of another is of comfort to you. However, there comes a time when we each must define ourselves, recognize our own self-identity, realize that we’re capable, summon our confidence, and seek a new support system.
Am I speaking to Virgo or Pisces? Both. For they are the shadow of the other.
LIBRA I saw in a dream a sheaf of wheat. A symbol of nourishment. I thought of Libra, and what nourishes them. Relationships, beauty, friends, equilibrium, balance, love, sacrifice, art. It’s the art of the wheat sheaf that I remember. Librans must get back to their art in whatever form interests them. Some paint, some have galleries, some are collectors. What is your art form? It’s calling you.
SCORPIO Do you sense restlessness, that there’s a group that belongs to you, that you belong in, yet somehow you can’t find it or they you? As you both search for the other, assess your present-day and future goals. They’ve changed recently or are in the process. So many of us are on the fence, indecisive about the future. We must summon patience. Speak with those close to you. Ask for their visions and goals. Listen carefully.
SAGITTARIUS
There’s an inner joy and gratitude, enthusiasm. Do you need to begin something? Share your ideas with those who can aid and support you. Diplomacy, peacekeeping and subtlety are paramount.
CAPRICORN What will you do when winter begins? It’s only a week away. Then the holidays. However, something somewhere is calling you from far away. Perhaps it’s a town or city, a village or community, a course of study, somewhere you want to travel to, to visit and discover. Something merry and bright your ways comes.
we are, eventually our gifts are called forth. We (especially Pisces at this time) are to work at our best in the place(s) we find ourselves. Relationships need compromise. Offer loving Goodwill. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.
AQUARIUS Take extra care with money and resources. Use this time to discriminate between what is needed and what is not. Give away what is not and then give more away. Giving provides us with meaning, a true sense of service and a liberation that allows us to move forward in our lives, no matter the difficulties. The other side of giving is receiving. Receive what’s needed graciously.

rediscoveries of the last 100 years, will go on display at Louvre Abu Dhabi, alongside another da Vinci masterpiece, La Belle Ferronnière, which is currently on loan from musée du Louvre. Painted by one of history’s greatest and most renowned artists, Salvator Mundi is one of fewer than 20 known surviving paintings by the Italian Renaissance master. Dating from around 1500, it is an oil on panel painting depicting a half-length figure of Christ as Saviour of the World, facing the viewer, and dressed in flowing robes of lapis and crimson. The figure holds a crystal orb in his left hand as he raises his right hand in benediction. His Excellency Mohamed Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture & Tourism said: “We are delighted to be displaying Salvator Mundi, part of Leonardo da Vinci’s rich legacy, at Louvre Abu Dhabi. This is in line with our ambition to share this extraordinary
museum with the world, and our mission to inspire a new generation of cultural leaders and creative thinkers to contribute to our rapidlychanging and tolerant nation.” Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: “Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece Salvator Mundi fits perfectly into the narrative of Louvre Abu Dhabi, the first universal museum to break down the barriers between the different civilisations. It will be on display alongside our growing collection, and will be an exceptional treasure that no doubt will be enjoyed by our visitors.” The museum is also preparing to open its inaugural special exhibition, From One Louvreto Another: Opening a Museum for Everyone, on 21 December 2017. It traces the history of musée du Louvre in Paris in the 18th century. Divided into three sections, the exhibition will look at the royal collections at Versailles under King Louis XIV; the residency of

Hundreds of Kids Gifted Bikes
KMIR Tyler Harrison Santa got some help spreading holiday cheer to Coachella Valley kids as Variety the Children’s Charity of the Desert hosted the 22nd annual Bike Giveaway at Palm Springs Motors. “I’m kinda speechless,” said 9-year-old Krislynn Galvan from Palm Springs. It was a sight to behold: over 400 brand new bikes. A traditional gift is now a valley tradition. “A bicycle means a lot. I remember my very first bike. It was a red Schwinn about the size we’re giving away here and suddenly you know, I felt free. I had some independence. I could go places. I didn’t have to depend on my parents. I used to hitch
my little red wagon behind it and pull my little brother,” said Michael Mathews, President of Variety The Children’s Charity of the Desert. After funds are raised through a phone-a-thon, it takes a little elbow grease to prepare for the big day. “We turn out whole shop into Santa’s workshop. We had over 50 volunteers who assemble all 400 bikes in about 3 and a half hours. It was unbelievable, it really puts you in the Christmas spirit. I’m so proud of our team at Palm Springs Motors. We’ve been doing this for over 10 years and it just gets better and better every single year,” said Scott Simmers, the General Manager.
Each student who receives a bike is selected by their teacher. “18 of my kids did not have bikes so we figured out who needed them the
most and 10 of them were nominated and 10 of them got bikes. It means a little more freedom, some responsibility, they have to wear their helmet

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center held its annual Golf Tournament also known as the Frank Sinatra Championship golf event on Dec.10th thru the 12th. Barbara Sinatra passed away this summer and it was a great loss to our community. Barbara and Frank started the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center in 1986. It became a reality because of Barbara’s determination that no child should ever be abused physically or emotionally. She
at every fundraising function. Even in later years when her health was failing, she would always show up or at least send a video message. She will be sorely missed by all. The Sinatra Golf tournament has changed this year. There will be no big amount of Celebrities. Tom Dreesen and Joe Montegna have been with the tournament for years and will be the only celebrities in the field. There are 56 golfers and they will play the prestigious Bighorn Golf Course. Many
got all of Franks friends to donate the 2 million dollars needed to make it happen. The Center resides on the Eisenhower campus and treats children daily. To Barbara, it was heartbreaking to see very young children being abused and she wanted to make it a safe place for them. The facility has it all with doctors, and mental health professionals to give clients what they need, all FREE of charge. Barbara was a hand on person at the Center and
more will be at the dinners and the Barry Manilow Concert as part of their ticket for the event. Each person attending got a pamphlet that is a tribute to Barbara Sinatra and chronicles the history of the Center. John Thoreson, Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Director, spoke and said it was thru the generosity of R.D. Hubbard to allow them to use the Bighorn Golf Course. It took many donors to be able to put on this Sinatra event. There was a party at Bighorn

on the night before golf at the VAULT, a part of Bighorn. This amazing facility houses many extremely rare cars, motorcycles and more. John said that on Monday morning before golf there would be a putting lesson from PGA pro, Dave Stockton Jr. He gave the time for golf and other events. He thanked all for coming and supporting Barbara Sinatra’s Children’s Center. He announced that the new Chairwoman was Helene Galen. All Proceeds will go to the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center to continue all the programs. There is such a need for this in our valley. Angie Gerber, President of the Board said the Center has treated over 22,000 children. The “Protect Yourself Videos, have gone worldwide in hopes of educating children about predators. Over the many years, the Sinatra tournament raised millions of dollars as the primary fundraiser for the Center. Today, the Centers main fundraiser is the Champions Luncheon, that works to get Aunts and Uncles membership to continue the support the Center needs. In just 4 years the luncheon has been able to increase the Aunts and Uncles by 250 new members.

Tesloop to the Rescue

By Pamela Price Imagine your worst car rental nightmare; you arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after a 14-hour transatlantic flight. Next, you stand in line for 45 minutes at a car rental office. After signing off on a car rental contract it’s time to locate your rental car. After this is accomplished, what energy you have goes toward battling traffic during the two hours plus drive to the desert. During this driving drama, one desert resident in a rental car (that was curiously not inspected by the car rental company before it left
their parking lot) experienced a front tire blow-out around midnight on the dark side, literally along Gene Autry Drive near the Palm Springs Airport. The driver ended up having to call the police and the rental car had to be towed. When the rental car client called me for advice, I gave him a one-word alternative to avoid, at all costs, another annoying car rental. The magic word? Tesloop. He replied, “Tesloop? Why didn’t you tell me about this before?” Tesloop is the longawaited solution for travelers in the market for a sane, safe and sensibly priced way to
reach LAX to avoid a costly and a potential problematical rental car. You can reserve a seat for a prompt pick up at LAX for the transfer to Palm Springs, as well. The rate ranges from $29 to $79 for a one-way smooth ride. The comfortable, clean five passenger Tesloop can pick you up at several easy to locate desert sites including the Westin Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage. Your seat is paid for in advance. Tesloop’s-drivers are referred to as “pilots”. We tested Tesloop airport transfer on November 16th waiting at the hotel’s entrance for a
6 p.m. pick up. The Tesloop arrived promptly at 6 pm with the Pilot efficiently transferring the luggage. The fare had been prepaid. “Tesloop is a blessing for travelers needing to catch their flight from Los Angeles International Airport. This means you don’t have to leave your own car or a car rental at LAX in a long-term parking lot and you can enjoy a leisurely journey to the airport with a driver who knows how to handle the challenging freeway traffic. It is about time that travelers had an alternative to the conventional
one-way car rental,” said desert resident, Grace Robbins. It’s obvious there has been an interest in a better way to access LAX. Traveling with Tesloop removes is reasonably priced, reliable and comfortable. Tesloop, for the record, “is aligned with Tesla’s mission statement. Tesloop and Tesla Motors are two separate entities.” Here’s what you need know when making arrangements between Palm Springs and LAX, go to www. tesloop.com and view the “available pickup times” or call the Tesloop Concierge at 818

Favorites celebrated via new LPs, reissues and live sets With the arrival of the holidays, a number of wonderful collections representing a wide range of genres and eras have just been released.
High Flying Birds Title: Who Built The Moon? (Caroline Records) Tell me more: A dramatic and stylistic shift away from 2015’s “Chasing Yesterday,” Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ third studio disc “Who Built The Moon?” certifies the greatness of Oasis’ principal songwriter. Noel Gallagher’s latest effort features a lavish mix of alt rock, electronica, synth pop and tinges of gospel, soul and other styles. Listening to the exuberant “It’s a Beautiful World,” driving New Ordermining “She Taught Me How to Fly,” cosmic blues romp “Be Artist: Herb Alpert Careful What You Wish For” Title: The Christmas Wish and expansive “Holy Mountain” (Herb Alpert Presents) is to be spellbound by the Tell me more: Nearly 50 wide range of styles collected years after recording his nowand merged with flawless classic “Christmas Album” artistry. The urgent “Fort Knox,” with the Tijuana Brass in 1968, acoustic “Dead in the Water” Herb Alpert has issued another and heavy title track are other full-length holiday music standouts. Gallagher’s voice collection. The wonderful “The and dazzling guitar work are Christmas Wish” showcases seminal, while the role of the 82-year-old artist’s enduring noteworthy artists who guest talents as a trumpet virtuoso on the album including Jason across this set. Backed by Falkner (of Beck, Jellyfish and a 45-piece orchestra and Air fame), Johnny Marr (The 32-member choir, there are Smiths, The The) and Paul many highlights on the album, Weller (The Jam) help bolster with the stirring “Carol of the this amazing album. “Who Built Bells” and “We Wish You a The Moon?” is one of the best Merry Christmas” medley and albums of 2017. Artist: Big Head Todd and the Monsters Title: New World Arisin’ (Big Records) Tell me more: Big Head Todd and the Monsters have released their 11th full-length album and it’s as epic as the title. “New World Arisin’ “ kicks off with the explosive
“Glow,” a song that expertly bridges alternative rock and blues. From there, the Boulder, Colorado-spawned quartet delves into Southern blues-rock (“New World Arisin’ “), melodic alt rock (“Damaged One”), funk (“Trip”) and jangly psychedelia (“Mind”) – and that’s just the first handful of tracks on the album. Thirty years into their illustrious career, Big Head Todd and the Monsters are still writing and performing with the firepower and creativity displayed on their breakout 1993 album “Sister Sweetly.” High octane rocker “Detonator” the lovely “Wipeout Turn” and inspired blues rocker “Under Your Wings” are among the other memorably-affecting songs on the outstanding “New World Arisin’.” Information: BigHeadTodd.com.
material penned by everyone from Bob Dylan and Tom Petty to John Fogerty and Big Star’s Alex Chilton afforded the Searchers plenty of ammunition to put their distinctive vocals and musical stamp on songs that draw natural comparisons with Tom Petty, the Plimsouls, Great Buildings and other melodic rockers to emerge at the dawn of the ‘80s. There are 29 splendid tracks splashed across two discs, representing all the album tracks, B-sides and alternate mixes from the Sire era. Listening to winning material such as “Love’s Gonna Be Strong,” “Feeling Fine,” “It’s Too Late” and a shimmering reworking of Fogerty’s classic “Almost Saturday Night,” it’s easy to hear why the Searchers are worth discovering. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.
Artist: The Searchers Title: Another Night: The Sire Recordings 1979-1981 (Omnivore Recordings) Tell me more: One of England’s break-out bands following the Beatles, the Searchers scored a slew of hit singles in the early 1960s including “Needles and Pins,” “Don’t Throw Our Love Away” and “Sweets for My Sweet.” But while the group’s initial string of hits stopped coming in the late 1960s, there was a revival of sorts for the group when the head of Sire Records caught the band at a performance in the late 1970s and signed them to a new contract. These recordings – featured on the new compilation “Another Night: The Sire Recordings 19791981” – are a delight. Spirited
Artist: Little Richard Title: Here’s Little Richard (Craft Recordings/ Concord Music) Tell me more: To listen to the 60th anniversary edition of “Here’s Little Richard” is to be joyfully transported to the early days of rock ‘n’ roll and gain a newfound appreciation of the artist born Richard Penniman. One of rock’s founding fathers, Little Richard’s debut (recorded in 1955 and 1956) more than holds up in 2017. The performances here are simply riveting, with Little Richard’s signature vocals and pounding piano driving rockers such as “Tutti Frutti,” Ready Teddy,” “Rip It Up” and “Long Tall Sally” as well as New Orleans-flavored blues (“I Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave,” “Baby,” “Slippin’

Artist: Peter Case Title: On The Way Downtown: Recorded Live On Folkscene (Omnivore Recordings) Tell me more: Singersongwriter Peter Case’s “On The Way Downtown: Recorded Live On Folkscene” features live tracks captured on Los Angles radio station KPFK-FM’ syndicated radio program in 1998 and 2000. This fantastic collection features Case singing a number of his stellar originals, including the Americana-styled “On the Way Downtown” and “Honey Child,” Delta bluesflavored “Let Me Fall” and introspective “Green Blanket (Part 1)” from “Full Service, No Waiting” (released in 1998); the last nine selections on “On The Way Downtown” are weighted in favor of Case’s 2000 LP “Flying Saucer Blues”; songs from that disc shine in the live setting including the Appalachia spirited “Something Happens” and wistful folk nugget “Blue Distance” (with lovely fiddle work from David Perales) and the playful acoustic blues chantey “Walking Home Late.” The package also features liner notes penned by Case about the radio performances featured on the disc. Seal and Frank Sinatra Duet on Christmas Single By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, Dec. 8, -Today, British soul legend Seal has released a duet with one of history’s most iconic artists, Frank Sinatra, via UMe. Performing the Christmas classic, “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” Seal and Sinatra sing side by side, in perfect harmony, creating a unique, one-off single, just in time for the holidays. The dream collaboration, granted by Frank Sinatra Enterprises, is out today, ahead of Sinatra’s birthday next Tuesday, December 12. The festive single will be accompanied by an exclusively commissioned video to premiere next week, showcasing both artists at their very best. Seal said: “To play with Frank’s musicians on Standards was quite something, but to perform with the man himself is beyond words.” Tina Sinatra said: “Dad’s Christmas recordings are as significant to his vast musical
legacy as his signature saloon songs. The new Sinatra and Seal duet of ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ is a joyous hoot and ‘sings’ to the spirit of the season.” Originally written by John Frederick Coots and Haven Gillespie, the track was first performed in 1934. Over the years it has been covered by more than 200 artists and sold millions of copies, becoming the archetypal Christmas standard known the world over. This single continues Seal’s recent affiliation with Ol’ Blue Eyes, following his album Standards, which features legendary pianist Randy Waldman. The album also includes other legends, Chuck Berghofer (bass player with Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles) and Greg Fields (drummer with Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder). The songs were recorded in the famous Capitol Studios (the very studio where Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and many others have recorded), and United Studios,
which was established by Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. It’s a natural successor to Seal’s series of soul records, made a decade ago which sold more than five million copies around the world. Standards hears Seal’s signature, velvety warm vocals bring to life classics made popular by Sinatra (including “Luck Be A Lady,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” and “It Was A Very Good Year”), Ella Fitzgerald (“I’m Beginning to See The Light”), and Nina Simone (“I Put A Spell On You”). Elsewhere, there are lush orchestral moments captured on “Smile” (Charlie Chaplin) and the Cole Porter gem, “Love For Sale.” The sound of Seal’s new album is also shaped by three renowned collaborators: Grammy®-nominated British producer Nick Patrick (who has worked with luminaries including Tina Turner and Marvin Gaye and enjoyed huge chart success with his pioneering Elvis orchestral albums), multi Grammy®nominated arranger Chris
Walden, and legendary engineer Don Murray. “Seal’s rich, luxurious voice remains a reliable thing of wonder” – LONDON EVENING STANDARD “Seal sets new Standards with album of timeless classics” – DAILY TELEGRAPH
Available now, Frank Sinatra Ultimate Christmas features 20 iconic holiday favorites from Sinatra’s Capitol and Reprise vaults on exclusive limited edition 2LP white vinyl, 180-gram 2LP black vinyl, CD, and digital formats.

Mike Evans Has 30M Evangelicals Praying for Jerusalem
By Desert Star Staff JERUSALEM, -Few Evangelical leaders in America have such a close connection to Jerusalem as Michael Evans. Evans established the Jerusalem Prayer Team that has brought together more than 30 million evangelicals to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Evans also founded the Friends of Zion Museum. It’s a state of the art museum bringing together the latest technology to tell the history and heroes of
Christian Zionists who played a key role in the founding of the modern state of Israel. December 6th marked a special day for Evans. U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Jerusalem is the capital of the Jewish state. We talked with Evans at the Jerusalem Post Diplomatic Conference about what the day meant to him. While it’s historic and prophetic, Evans says President Trump’s decision
is also strategic. Trump has been building along with Israel a strategic alliance with the Sunni nations of the Middle East like Saudi Arabia. The alliance stands as a bulwark against the growing expansion of Iran that seeks to dominate the Middle East. “Donald Trump did more to build the Sunni alliance in one week than all American Presidents did in their lifetimes, and the Crown Prince is now an ally of Israel and an ally of
Donald Trump and helping. We need the Sunni alliance especially in light of Iran so it was absolutely genius on Trump’s part,” he said. Evans believes how Trump is implementing these policy changes both recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and yet preserves the alliance at the same time. Seventy years ago, President Harry Truman against the advice of his own State Department and many of his advisors recognized the nascent state of Israel. President Trump seems to be taking a page from Truman and Evans compares him to King Cyrus in the Bible who helped Israel in ancient times. Evans also says we’re in the middle of prophecy. “I will see President Trump Monday. I will be in the White House on Monday and the first word I’m going to send to him, ‘Cyrus, you’re Cyrus. Because you’ve done something historic and prophetic,’ and he promised us he would do it,” Evans said. “He (Cyrus) saved the Jewish people. He was used as an instrument of God for
By Desert Star Staff The New York Police Department (NYPD) has confirmed that the Monday morning explosion near Times Square was an act of terrorism. The perpetrator was identified as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, said to have been inspired by Islamic State propaganda online. NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill called the blast a “terror-related incident” during a news conference. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio also referred to the incident as an “attempted terrorist attack.” “Let’s be clear – this was an attempted terrorist attack. Thank God, the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals. Our first responders were there quickly and the only injuries we know of right now are minor,” De Blasio tweeted following the attack. “We are a target because
we prove a society of many faiths and many backgrounds can work – we show democracy can work. But we are the most resilient place on earth. We’ve proved it time and time again,” he continued. When asked whether the suspect had ties to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), O’Neill said “he did make statements” but refused to elaborate. ABC News reported that Ullah told the authorities he was inspired to carry out the attack by IS propaganda he accessed online. Governor Andrew Cuomo confirmed that the attacker was inspired by IS. He was “disgruntled” and learned how to make a bomb online, Cuomo told CNN. The explosion was caused by a crude pipe bomb strapped to the man, which injured him and four others when it went off in the subway
corridor near Times Square during morning rush hour. He was also in possession of a second device, which did not detonate. Surveillance cameras captured the man walking through the crowded passageway between 7th and 8th Avenue under 42nd
Street when the bomb detonated at 7:20am local time. The suspect came to the US from Bangladesh seven years ago, according to AP. Elrana Peralty, a customer-service worker for Greyhound buses in the Port Authority, said she did not hear the explosion.

deliverance in the Bible and God has used this imperfect vessel, this flawed human being like you or I, this imperfect vessel and he’s using him in an incredible, amazing way to fulfill his plans and purposes. We are so happy. We couldn’t be happier and as somebody who has wanted and prayed and hoped for this for more than forty years, I see us in the middle of prophecy right now,” he said. “This is the beginning of wonderful things. Finally, we have a leader with moral clarity who will do the right thing and the righteous thing. And by the way, he’s told us over and over only two forces put me in the Presidency, God and the Evangelicals and I’ll never forget that,” he continued. Evans has put a 40-foot banner on his Friends of Zion museum in Jerusalem to support the President. He believes Trump’s decision will bless America since Genesis 12:2 promises that God will bless those who bless the Jewish people. He also says it’s vital to be praying for the peace of Jerusalem.
“All we could hear was the chaos,” she said. “We could hear people yelling, ‘Get out! Get out! Get out!’” The NYPD, FBI and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force are currently investigating the attack, according to NBC News.

Job growth remains solid despite tightening labor market
Employment increased by 228,000 jobs in November after increasing by 244,000 jobs in October.

making this difficult to answer, but November’s stronger than expected increase may suggest that at the very least, job growth is not slowing further. What is clear is that current job growth is more than enough to continue tightening the labor market.

false starts of productivity acceleration in recent years, but there is more reason for it to be sustained now that the labor market is tight. Employers may also have more scope to raise wages as a result of these productivity gains along with improved profit numbers.

Jurors Convict Hit Man Accused in Decades-Old Murder
KMIR News Staff Palm Desert, CA - A contract killer who was hired 25 years ago to murder his employer’s romantic rival, a Palm Desert man whose remains were found buried in a Nevada streambed, was convicted
Wednesday of murder. Jurors deliberated for about three hours before returning a first- degree murder verdict and finding true a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait against Russell Huber, 59, of Oroville. He faces life in prison
without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced Jan. 12 for killing 41-year-old Clyde Gregory Hayward, who never arrived for a date with his girlfriend on July 6, 1992. His pickup truck was found about two weeks later on Highway 95, 26 miles north of Blythe, with dried blood and two .380 shell casings found about 100 yards east of the vehicle. Hayward’s girlfriend, whose name was not disclosed, told detectives at the time that she had turned down a marriage proposal from her employer, John Nichols, and believed he was behind her boyfriend’s disappearance, but there was no concrete evidence. The prosecution alleged that after being rejected by the victim’s girlfriend, Nichols arranged a fake business meeting with Hayward under the guise of securing golf carts for a development project. Hayward, a golf mechanic who previously had worked for a golf cart distributor, was killed after he showed up to meet with Huber and Peter Boncore, a longtime associate of the defendant, according to
the district attorney’s office. Huber told investigators he and Boncore were in the desert, where they ``had a meeting with a guy about golf carts on behalf of Nichols,’’ according to the prosecution’s trial brief. Huber said they sat down at a diner and later went to Hayward’s house, but the victim was ``alive and well’’ when the meeting ended. The victim’s remains were found in a streambed in Clark County, Nevada, in February 1993, but weren’t positively identified until May 20, 2014. Following the identification, DNA analysis was conducted on several discarded cigarette butts found near the victim’s abandoned truck. DNA and fingerprint evidence linked the cigarettes to Huber, who speculated during interviews with detectives that his DNA got into Hayward’s pickup because he drove the truck from the diner to Hayward’s house. According to the prosecution, Nichols -- who died in 2001 -- hired Boncore to carry out the killing, and he, in turn, recruited Huber. Boncore and Nichols met
in prison in the 1980s. Nichols, known as ``Octopus,’’ had previous ties to murders-for-hire, including a still-unsolved 1981 triple killing involving Cabazon Band of Mission Indians Tribal Leader Fred Alvarez, who was shot to death at his Rancho Mirage home, along with friends Ralph Boger and Patricia Castro. At the time, Nichols was the tribe’s financial manager and was suspected of silencing Alvarez to prevent him from exposing Nichols’ alleged illegal activities -- rumored to include the establishment of a weapons testing site on the reservation. Nichols was never officially tied to the murders but was sentenced to four years in prison for solicitation of murder in an unrelated case and sometime thereafter met Boncore. Jimmy ``James’’ Hughes, a security official-turnedpreacher, was charged in 2009 with the Rancho Mirage triple-murder, but prosecutors dropped the charges the following year, citing insufficient evidence. A lack of rain has officials on edge statewide because of parched conditions and no end in sight to the typical fire season. “This is the new normal,” Gov. Jerry Brown warned Saturday after surveying damage from the deadly Ventura fire. “We’re about ready to have firefighting at Christmas. This is very odd and unusual.” High fire risk is expected to last into January and the governor and experts said climate change is making it a year-round threat. Overall, the fires have destroyed about 800 homes and other buildings, killed dozens of horses and forced more than 200,000 people to flee flames that have burned over 270 square miles (700 square kilometers) since Dec. 4. One death, so far, a 70-year-
old woman who crashed her car on an evacuation route, is attributed to the fire in Santa Paula, a small city where the fire began. The Ventura County blaze also continued to burn into rugged mountains in the Los Padres National Forest near the little town of Ojai and toward a preserve established for endangered California condors. Ojai experienced hazardous levels of smoke at times and officials warned of unhealthy air for large swaths of the region. The South Coast Air Quality Management District urged residents to stay indoors if possible and avoid vigorous outdoor activities. As fires burned in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, firefighters were already in place north of San Diego on Thursday when a major fire erupted and rapidly spread in
the Fallbrook area, known for its avocado groves and horse stables in the rolling hills. The fire swept through the San Luis Rey Training Facility, where it killed more than 40 elite thoroughbreds and destroyed more than 100 homes - most of them in a retirement community. Three people were burned trying to escape the fire that continued to smolder Sunday. Most of last week’s fires were in places that burned in the past, including one in the ritzy Los Angeles neighborhood of Bel-Air that burned six homes and another in the city’s rugged foothills above the community of Sylmar and in Santa Paula. Associated Press writers Elliot Spagat in Fallbrook and Brian Melley and Robert Jablon in Los Angeles contributed to this report. Source: KMIR/AP
New evacuations as huge Southern California fire flares up
Continued from Page 1
Ellen DeGeneres tweeted at midday Sunday. “We just had to evacuate our pets. I’m praying for everyone in our community and thankful to all the incredible firefighters.” A few miles to the west, Santa Barbara Zoo was closed to the public and its 500 animals confined to their night quarters all day. The zoo was just outside the evacuation area, but smoke and ash blew through the 30-acre property.
Firefighters made significant progress Saturday on other fronts of the enormous fire that started Dec. 4 in neighboring Ventura County. As containment increased on other major blazes in Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego counties, resources from those fires were diverted to the Santa Barbara foothills. Forecasters said Santa Ana winds that whipped fires across the region last week would continue in some areas at least through Monday.

How to Find the Right Home Mortgage
By Desert Star Staff Ample bedrooms and bathrooms? Check. A roomy kitchen? Check. A nice-sized backyard, storage space in the attic and just the right amount of curb appeal? Check, check and check. Once you’ve found your perfect home, the next step is finding the right mortgage -which can sometimes feel like you’re competing in a contact sport, being blindsided by confusing requests or financial surprises as you go through the application process. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 63.7 percent of Americans own their home. But getting there wasn’t necessarily easy. A 2017 NerdWallet survey reports that 42 percent of homeowners felt the home-buying process was stressful, a third said it was complicated, and 21 percent found it intimidating. To help make you a mortgage all-star, Ally Home has created “The Mortgage Playbook,” a free, easy-toread resource. Authored by members of the Ally Home Team, a dedicated group of loan experts, the “Playbook” features four sections that cover the entire field -- from a getting-started game plan to approval and closing on a mortgage. It also breaks down confusing financial terms, helping applicants avoid pain during the

home buying process. To help you prepare for your mortgage game day, here are three top tips from the experts at Ally: • Maximize your financial fitness. There are five steps consumers should take to improve their “financial fitness” before applying for a mortgage. These include demonstrating stable employment, managing debt, paying down credit accounts, accumulating assets like savings or retirement accounts to boost credit histories, and reviewing (and correcting, if necessary) your credit reports. • Know your numbers. Borrowers can take advantage of free online tools, such as the Affordability Calculator available at Ally.com, to determine how
much house they can afford. Using two pieces of data -monthly income and monthly debt -- a borrower can quickly calculate their debt-to-income ratio. In most instances, this ratio should not exceed 43 percent, meaning your monthly mortgage payment and other debt obligations (car loan, school loan, credit card payments) should not comprise more than 43 percent of your gross monthly income. • Know what type of mortgage is best for you. One of the biggest decisions borrowers make is whether to get a fixed-rate or adjustable-rate mortgage. When interest rates are low, a fixed-rate mortgage may be the better option. But if interest rates are higher, an

adjustable rate mortgage could make sense because its lower initial rate means lower monthly payments for a specific time period (usually five, seven or 10 years) before the rate could change. NH Health-Care Advocates Speak Out on Tax Plan
By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, N.H. – Health-care advocates who traveled from New Hampshire to Washington, D.C., to protest the passage of the Senate tax changes were in Concord on Thursday, speaking out about their experiences. They say the 500-page bill guts Medicaid and Medicare to give massive tax breaks to
DESERT HOT SPRINGS
corporations and the rich. According to Lisa Beaudoin, executive director of ABLE New Hampshire, the results would be particularly devastating to people with disabilities. “This would result in the stagnation of Medicaid longterm supports and services, caps on spending; and individuals in the future would have long waits to receive
adult services,” she explains. Gov. Chris Sununu has praised the tax bill as a “net positive” that closes loopholes and simplifies the tax code. But, Melissa Hinebauch human rights co-chair of the Kent Street Coalition, points out that, while corporate tax cuts in the bill are permanent, those for individuals expire in a few years. And she predicts services will be slashed as December 13, 2017
the federal deficit explodes. “It will hurt the people who can least afford to be hurt - like the struggling middleclass, students, the elderly, the working poor, and those who need access to affordable health care,” she notes. She says the Senate tax bill contains provisions that would strip an estimated 13 million people nationwide of their health insurance and raise premium costs for millions more. Both Hinebauch and Beaudoin were among dozens of protesters arrested at rallies in the Senate office building in Washington as Republicans finalized the tax bill - rallies Beaudoin says drew people from across the country. “The people who will most enormously be impacted came together to stand up to the truth of the harsh impacts this tax bill will have on our nation’s most vulnerable,” Beaudoin adds. A final version of the bill has to pass in both houses of Congress. Republicans hope to have it on the president’s desk before the end of the year.

Mame Opens at Palm Canyon Theatre this Friday!
Photo by Paul Hayashi By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, Calif– Mame, starring Se Layne and Morgana Corelli, will take the stage at Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) December 1-17. Layne will play the eccentric Mame Dennis who is entrusted with the care of her 10-year-old nephew, Patrick, played by Ben Van Dijk. Mame leads an artsy, bohemian, intellectual lifestyle with best friend Vera Charles, played by Corelli, always atthe-ready with a martini in hand. Rather than have the new family member alter her free-spirited lifestyle, Auntie Mame teaches Patrick how to live each day to the fullest. The musical follows the story of the 1955 novel “Auntie Mame” by Patrick Dennis as well as the 1956 Broadway play, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee and the 1958 film. Lawrence and Lee also wrote the musical, which premiered on Broadway in 1966. The show portrays how Mame and Patrick influence each other
Photo by Paul Hayashi through the years. Audiences watch Patrick grow up, with the older Patrick played by Scott Clinkscales. The PCT production is directed and choreographed by Stephanie Eley. Eley was in the original Broadway cast of Dreamgirls and My One and Only and performed in the national and international tours of A Chorus Line from 1977-1980. Steven Smith will direct the production’s music with well-known songs, written by Broadway great and former Palm Springs resident Jerry Herman, including “My Best Girl,” “Bosom Buddies,” and “We Need a Little Christmas.” Derik Shopinski is the show’s costume designer. The production’s scenic design is by Allan Jensen. Lighting designs are by J.W. Layne, co-artistic director of PCT. Se Layne shares the role of PCT’s co-artistic director with her brother J.W., who founded PCT with his family in 1997. Mame is the fourth show of 13 in PCT’s 20172018 schedule. Additional
company members in Mame include Rob Weidert (Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside), Ben Reece (M. Lindsay Woolsey), Jeffrey Fergson (Dwight Babcock), Elizabeth Schmelling (Agnes Gooch), Adrian Fernando Vera (Ito), Kelli Perches (Sally Cato), Jasmine Shaffer (Madame Branislowski), Nick Wass (Junior Babcock), Bianca Stoker (Gloria Upson), Chandra Smith
(Pegeen Ryan), Mat Tucker (Gregor), as well as additional ensemble members. Mame opens at the Palm Canyon Theatre on Friday, December 1, and runs through Sunday, December 17 (No show on December 2). Show times are 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m. Tickets are $32-$36. Student tickets are $15, with valid
