CVRep is proud to present its 2016-2017 Season “Love, Marriage & LIFE CHANGING EVENTS” By Pamela Price Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre (CVRep) is doing well rocking with their 20162017 season. A real teaser for the 2016-17, Season themed “Love, Marriage & Life Changing Events “was the debut of their 2016 Holiday Cabaret performance of Miracle of Miracles ‘Celebrating Jewish

Writers of the American Musical Theatre”starring Danny Gurwin with accompanist Scott Harlan on December 9th. Historically accurate, as well as irresistibly nostalgic ( sorry, Mike Jagger), Gurwin kept the pace moving with outtakes from classical Broadway hits ramped up with a Yiddish accent from Fiddler on the Roof ( Sholem

Aleichim, Yiddish author and playwright) ) to Milk and Honey ( lyric’s by Jerry Herman) Gurwin is a scholar when it comes to musical theatre with a BFA in this specialty from the University of Michigan. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic As the year 2016 comes closer to becoming the year 2017, it may be a good time to sample three genres that that hopefully scored with its fan base, perhaps luring new fans that the writers, producers, and directors have been trying to reach and seduce. America’s movie going public has definitely undergone changing demographics over the last ten years to a point where films and their stories are less linear and less narrativedriven. Now more emphasis is placed on warp-speed visuals, CGI actions sequences, along with ear-splitting sound tracks and dialogue delivered in mumbled, whispered tones by the actors, and I’m

guessing here, in order to give the impression of danger, urgency, or menace, that is, if we’re talking thriller, drama, mystery, or action genres. A great number of films released today are apparently not being produced as a way of enlightening their viewers through understanding the spoken dialogue, or the clarity of story points, or communicating to the viewers in general. They’re meant to be merely chewing gum for the eyes and ears. And people wonder why no one reads books or newspapers anymore. We’ve been dumbing down our society for years to the point that critical thinking and challenging the status quo is for fuddy-duddies, and bygone generations. Which brings

us to the three films I’ve seen this week. All three films are in general release. In no particular order they are: “Allied”, “Arrival” and “The Accountant”. “Allied” is an old fashion WW II espionage thriller starring Hollywood power actors Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. Pitt plays Canadian RAF Wing Commander and Intelligence Officer Max Vatan who has been sent to Casablanca, French Morocco on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Once there he meets up with French resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour played by Marion Cotillard, and the two spies plan their mission to assassinate the German Ambassador. Max

Social Security’s Fate: What you can do to Protect its Longevity

By Janice Gough Social Security trust fund itself is projected to run out by 2034, at which time promised benefits will likely be reduced to about 79%. Social Security, which is already having outflows that exceed incoming taxes, thus the trust fund is now being used. Reform is inevitable: Social Security is like a train speeding toward crashing into a mountain that has no tunnel. We must extend the trust fund’s solvency because promised benefits are exceeding incoming taxes and Social Security’s trust

fund forecast to dry up in 17 years. Knowing that we’ve got this potential train wreck, it’s irresponsible to continue to promise more benefits than the system can produce. Social Security reform is inevitable, and the sooner we address this reality, the less onerous the changes will be. Social Security has two parts: a welfare feature and a retirement income portion. Many advisors believe it should be changed to be more like a 401(k) plan and the welfare portion be managed separately. The system is very one-sided. It’s almost entirely an incomeconfiscation plan and should be mainly a required savings program. Compared to a 401(k) plan, in which you put money into a 401(k) plan, it’s there for you. When Social Security runs out of money, the Administration is legally not able to borrow; they can only reduce benefits. We probably should raise full retirement age by about two years. We are going to end up raising the tax rate a little bit for both employer and employee. But with the combination of those two, the system will last another 75 years. For those concern if Social Security will be there when they are

eligible to draw, consider that the government cannot confiscate private property without due compensation but changes are inevitable to substain the fund. There are Over 10,000 claiming options available from age 62 to 70 ½. Selecting the right strategy will not only help Social Security to survive, it may benefit you tremendously. Calculating Social Security benefits into your retirement plan is critical. Your advisors should include this projection and provide good claiming advice, because we all want the peace of mind of not running out of money. There are claiming strategies that can help you extend and enhance benefits. The file-and-suspend option is now over with exception for earners who were grandfathered in. Wealthier people were abusing the fileand-suspend strategy, but now the middle class and poor who were also using file-and-suspend are now being deprived of it. President Obama put that law in effect help to extend the longevity of the Social Security fund, without much oversight. If it did, it may not have passed. That’s one way they’ve cut back on promises, but despite those changes, it’s still

projected to run out by 2034. No one can file and suspend anymore. The No. 1 thing to know is that it pays to wait till age 70 to file for Social Security. Once you’ve reached full retirement age, then or any time thereafter, you can suspend benefits and still earn late-retirement credits, or 8% a year, till you hit 70. You will also maximize your lifetime benefits. Even though, benefit increase by 8% each year, few people delay beyond full retirement age; instead, they take Social Security as soon as they can. This can be a big mistake depending on one’s circumstances. For someone who took their election early this is one strategy to consider, especially if you’re worried about running out of money. Let’s say someone became unemployed at age 63 and started to receive benefits. But at 64-and-a-half, he gets a job. He can’t withdraw his application; but at 66, his full retirement age, he can suspend benefits and doesn’t have to pay back the prior benefits. He can then resume receiving Social Security starting at another later date. Most people don’t realize that they can redo an unwisely chosen strategy. This would require to change and start

over a prior Social Security claiming decision. There are two major strategies: One is that you can withdraw your application for benefits within 12 months of starting to receive them, which includes spousal and child benefits. Say the higher earner in a couple has a short life expectancy. He started Social Security at 62 but then realized that his wife, a lot younger and with a long life expectancy, would be cheated out of survivor benefits. So he decides to redo and delay benefits. That means all the benefits he got up to that point must be repaid. So, if you use this strategy, it’s like you never started to receive Social Security. We can expect that other changes will be made in the near future to protect the longevity of the fund.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Ms. RichardsonRecently we have had issues with projects and proposed projects that involve city regulations versus CC&R restrictions. Our board seems to think that the requirements in our CC&Rs are unenforceable if the city has already approved the projects. I contend that the CC&Rs must be met as well as city requirements, with the more restrictive (usually) CC&Rs having the greater legal power (for lack of a better word). Please share any information you have about this. Thank you, J.D., Solana Beach

county, state and federal laws. The law of the CC&Rs is based in contract, while the law of the governmental authorities is public law. HOA members must heed both. Some owner modifications do not require building permits but may still require association approval. An example would be changing the paint color of one’s garage door, which probably would not require a permit in most places but would clearly be an association issue for permission. Conversely, it is possible a building permit could be required for something which may not require HOA permission – such as replacing a water heater. Some cities require a homeowner show HOA approval of a home modification before issuing a building permit. However, with respect to solar installations, Government Code 65850.5(i) bars cities from doing so. This can be misleading to homeowners who may be led to think that

the HOA has no say in the matter – this is incorrect. HOA homeowners should check both with their association and the building authority before making changes to their home. Some homeowners consider the approval of the building department is more important than the HOA, and decide it is “better to ask forgiveness than permission.” This can prove to be a bad idea, such as in the 1992 case of Harbor View v. Torley, in which the homeowner added to their home without HOA permission, and then was ordered by the court to remove the addition and pay the HOA attorney fees. Thanks, Kelly

HOA Homefront - Which Law do we Follow?

Dear J.D.: Your CC&Rs and governing documents are private restrictions governing your community. Dear R.G.: HOA elections are governed by the DavisStirling Act sections regarding elections, at Civil Code Sections 51005145. Per Section 5105(a) (2), associations which have common area meeting space must make it available to candidates in HOA elections at no cost. So, if an election is in progress, the HOA may not ban campaign meetings in the clubhouse. The U.S. Constitution does not govern this, because the association is a private organization of members. Cold and Flu Season: Double Check, Don’t Double Up

By Desert Star Staff SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Cold and flu season is officially here, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans catch about 1 billion colds every year. Seven in 10 use over-thecounter medications to treat the symptoms. Many of these meds - from cough syrup and throat lozenges to nasal sprays - contain the common drug ingredient acetaminophen. It’s safe and effective when used as directed, said pharmacist Dr. Leiana Oswald, but there is a limit to how much you can take in one day. “When the labels are not followed, when the warnings or precautions are not followed, there can be a risk,” she said. “A lot of patients don’t realize that different products contain the same ingredients, and there’s an opportunity to accidentally overdose.”

Acetaminophen is found in more than 600 different overthe-counter and prescription medicines, and the CDC has said acetaminophen overdoses send an estimated 26,000 people to the emergency room every year. The overdose can be mild, from an upset stomach and feeling lethargic to very severe cases of liver failure. The Food and Drug Administration has set a maximum daily dose of 4,000 milligrams in a 24-hour period, but Oswald said it isn’t the same for everyone. “We know that for the regular, healthy adult, the FDA has approved up to 4,000 milligrams of acetaminophen,” she said, “but depending on different disease states, depending More than 26,000 emergency-room visits a year are the result of acetaminophen overdoses. Californian church vandalized with swastikas in apparent hate crime

By Desert Star Staff A Korean Presbyterian church in the city of Buena Park, California has been vandalized with swastikas and German phrases in an apparent hate crime. On Saturday morning members of the True Light Christian Church arrived at their place of worship to find that vandals had tagged the building with Nazi symbols and other messages such as “toxic love” and “my honor” written in German. Police were called to the church and they are investigating the vandalism as a possible hate crime. Speaking to local news Buena Park police Sgt. Mike Lovchik said “unknown

suspects had used spray paint to deface an outside wall with swastikas and other markings … there is no indication as to why this location was targeted, but based on the nature of the vandalism and the proximity to the church, this is being investigated as a possible hate crime.” The church had previously been targeted by similar acts of vandalism with member Peter Lee telling The Orange County Register that they have already spent over $1,000 cleaning up after similar acts this year. However, Lee said this latest attack represents a new low: “that’s just not a pretty sight to see,” he said. The investigation is ongoing.

A Buena Park church was found spray painted with Nazi symbols on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016. Police are investigating the case as a hate crime.

Automatic Voter Registration in MA: Will 2017 Be the Year?

Massachusetts lawmakers are expected to take up a measure that would allow for automatic voter registration. (Redjar/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff BOSTON - Bay State voters this year had their first chance to participate in early voting, and if local advocates have their way, lawmakers

will consider a measure in 2017 that would allow automatic voter registration. The current state voter registration system involves too many paper forms and

is costly and inaccurate, according to Pam Wilmot, executive director of Common Cause Massachusetts. When legislators get back to work in January, she said, she

expects they will consider automatic voter registration at state motor vehicle offices. “Six other states are now doing this,” she said. “The first, Oregon, just implemented for this election, and put 250,000 more voters on the voter rolls, about half of them that actually voted this time, which was great.” Some who oppose the idea fear that automatic registration could lead to compulsory voting, which is currently the law of the land in Australia. Wilmot said the legislation is likely to be drafted early next month. About 700,000 people of voting age in the state are not registered to vote, she said. Massachusetts has not exactly been on the cutting edge when it comes to modernizing elections,

Wilnot said. The 2016 elections were the first ever in the Commonwealth that allowed for early voting. “More than a million people voted early, in person, this time out, which is about a third of the total voting population,” she said. “So, that’s a fantastic win for voters. They loved it, and it’s frankly about time. We were the 35th state to enact early voting.” Wilmot said she expects the legislation would create an opt-out system rather than an opt-in system, meaning Massachusetts drivers automatically would be registered to vote when they renew or update their driver’s license. She said a similar measure made it out of committee last year but failed to gain final approval.

Congress’ Water Resources Bill: Fighting Over CA Water By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congress is expected to vote by Friday on the Water Resources Development Act to improve cities’ water infrastructure and help places like Flint, Mich., recover from lead contamination of its drinking water. Outgoing Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer has been shepherding the bill – until this week, when a rider was attached that has raised some concerns. The rider, from fellow California Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein and a number of Republican colleagues, allows some water from Northern California rivers to be diverted to Central Valley farmland. Attorney Doug Obegi with the National Resources www.desertstarweekly.com

Defense Council said that runs counter to what is needed to save the wild salmon populations in those rivers. “Well, these fish are already endangered,” Obegi said, “and there’s a real risk that we’ll actually drive them extinct, wiping them off the face of the earth.” The same rider would also make it much easier to construct dams by eliminating congressional oversight in California and at least 16 other states. According to Obegi, that is contrary to current California law. Sen. Feinstein has said the rider isn’t perfect, but it’s the best the bipartisan coalition could do to bring water to San Joaquin Valley farmers. Obegi said the history of

California water law is defined by the old saying, “Whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting.” He said since the 1850s, those who arrived in California could just take the water they needed - and he sees this rider as as a continuation of that tradition. “Unfortunately, these Republicans want to really undermine and destroy our environment at the behest of these large agribusinesses,” Obegi said. “And that’s a trade-off that we’re not willing to make, and that Sen. Boxer’s not willing to make.” Boxer has said she’ll “use every tool at her disposal” to stop the rider, calling it a “poison pill.” Congress only has until the end of the week to sort this out. Survey Finds GOP Voters Overwhelmingly Favor Renewables, Clean Energy

A new poll finds strong support among conservatives for policies supporting renewables and clean energy, and waning support for coal and nuclear power. (Evan Hansen) By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. President-elect Donald Trump’s position on renewables and clean energy is worrying environmentalists - but according to a new national poll, his voters

Trump’s selection of a climate skeptic to head the Environmental Protection Agency suggests the incoming administration may try to undo President Obama’s attempts to cut the carbon emissions that cause climate change. Pischea said conservative groups are working to help transform the nation’s energy supply, but they’ve been more focused on state and local policies. He said they will work in Washington. “Urge Congress and urge the Trump administration to take a proactive platform on

clean energy,” he said, “but most of the important work to move the ball is really happening at the state level.” Pischea said the survey found clean-air rules and support for economic development in energy transformation both tested off the charts. He said the poll found strong support for energy efficiency, and far more negative opinions about coal and nuclear energy. Pischea said the idea of government action aimed specifically at slowing climate change still is politically charged for conservatives, but added that he sees growing consensus on energy policies in general. “The encouraging part about the increasing support on the right,” he said, “is, we hope that it can lead to a depoliticized policy environment, where the accelerated growth of clean energy can thrive.” Pollster Public Opinion Strategies talked to 1,000 U.S. voters. Children’s Charity Distributes More Than 400 Bicycles

By KMIR News Staff CATHEDRAL CITY, Ca. - More than 400 bicycles were distributed to Coachella Valley fourth graders Sunday after a local nonprofit raised more than $77,000 through

a charitable radiothon. The funds were raised by Variety, the Children’s Charity of the Desert, which assists children with disabilities and serious illnesses. The nonprofit conducted a

two-day radiothon broadcast live on KPLM-106 last month, which drew enough donations to purchase the bicycles, to be given out at Palm Springs Motors. Along with the bikes,

400 helmets donated by Walter Clark Legal Group were also be distributed. Students eligible to receive bikes were nominated by local schools based on the student’s needs, efforts, sportsmanship, and respect for self, family, teachers and community, according to organizers. ``It is just the start of the holiday season and we are truly grateful for the community’s support and those of our sponsors that help make this event a success,’’ said Michael Matthews, board president of Variety, the Children’s Charity of the Desert. More than 5,000 bikes have been provided for Coachella Valley children since the program’s inception, according to Variety. Source: KMIR

Computer Science Education Week: Kids Coding After School By Desert Star Staff SPOKANE, Wash. - It’s Computer Science Education Week, and students in Washington state are finding computer education after the school day is done. In Spokane, all 34 elementary schools have primary Coding Clubs after school. Lisa White, director of after-school programs for Spokane Public Schools, said kids as young as kindergartners participate in the clubs - and students learn about computer science off-screen, too. “A lot of kids love doing the online part, being on the computer,” she said, “but even more of them like something they can touch and feel and make do something - make move, if you will.” White said the Coding Club uses activities such as computer-programmed robots to demonstrate code in real life for kids. She said science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields still suffer from a lack of diversity, and after-school programs are uniquely positioned to change this. According to a survey by the Afterschool Alliance, black children are twice as likely as white children to participate in after-school programs, and Hispanic children are nearly two-and-a-half times as likely. White said the key to diversifying the STEM field

HOROSCOPES ARIES

Careful and conscious communication, especially with elders, wise ones, teachers, supervisors, colleagues and those you work with, is most important. There could be misunderstandings and misgivings. Have the intention to “hold your mind steady in the light” of Right Relations so that all your thoughts radiate love yet also authority. This allows for true leadership. At times you may need to be strict. Do it with compassion.

TAURUS All of humanity is called to be a “thinker”. Thinker begins with curiosity, then gathering information. Usually we believe what other people tell us. We believe what they believe. In our world ignorance is more acceptable than knowledgeable thinking. This must change for humanity. Taurus is called to have an illumined mind that illuminates the minds of others. Offering the light of knowledge. Throughout all your lifetimes, this is your purpose.

CANCER Past loves and relationships (and perhaps monetary concerns) may show up in one or more ways, especially in your thinking and in your heart. You will revisit previous issues, especially misunderstandings and misinterpretations with those present in your life. With all communication, examine the intentions behind words, assess the meanings, and do not overreact or there will be sadness, illusion and separation. You may need to make several financial decisions soon.

LEO Tend carefully to your health at this time; be sure to exercise (gently) as part of a daily routine. Allow yourself the thought that mistakes are made more easily now. Therefore, check and re-check all work, writing, thoughts and actions. With co-workers realize criticism separates while cooperation unifies. You are a natural leader. VIRGO Has something bothered you in the past months? Something

about your relationship or lover or children or even your sense of creativity. Whatever it is will re-emerge in your daily life for healing. You will ponder upon the field of love. It is most important to be exacting and truthful. Truth occurs when we love enough. Love mobilizes us to do what we must. What is that “must” for you? Remember to “love more.”

LIBRA It’s important to communicate more with family members. Or to at least consider this communication so that in during the holydays your heart will be able and willing. Care in communication needs to be taken with family and all domestic matters, including real estate. You might consider transforming your home(s) so that they reflect more beauty. Accomplish all things, including communication, with non-judgment and ahimsa (doing no harm). These will protect you in later lives.

What to Know about Extending the Life of Your New Smartphone By Desert Star Staff The latest model smartphones are a big financial investment, whether you opt for the Apple iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus. But there’s good news for those with butter fingers. Waterresistance is the new industry standard, reveals a new study. The study from SquareTrade, a protection

plan provider for smartphones, tablets and other devices, uses a range of robots to drop, tumble, dunk and bend devices to see how they live up to everyday activities, and this year, a new “surf test” was added to the mix -- pro surfer Kai Lenny took each phone out on the waves to test water-resistance.

Want to protect your new smartphone? The study results offer some key insights: • Water resistance: The iPhone 7 generation with an IP67 rating claims water resistance in “up to a depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.” While both phones survived tests of this claim, they did suffer some

audio muffling afterward. “The iPhone 7 generation is the first to compete with water resistance,” says Steve Abernethy, executive chairman at SquareTrade. “After putting them to the test, there’s no doubt the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus aren’t scared of going for a little swim.” So while all this can give you some peace of mind around pools, puddles or even ocean waves, you will still want to take precautions around water. • Strength: In the bend test, the iPhone 7 bent at 170 pounds of pressure, the iPhone 7 Plus bent at 180 -- both matching the previous 6s generation. Good news for those who like to store their phones in the back pockets. • Tumble resistance: After 30 seconds in SquareTrade’s “TumbleBot,” the iPhone 7 was scuffed on its corners and cracked on the camera lens, similar to the iPhone 6s. The 7 Plus only suffered a small crack, and fared far better than the 6s Plus.

• The sidewalk always wins: A broken screen is still the leading cause of smartphone damage. Both phones shattered on their first facedown drop. By the second drop, the iPhone 7 bricked and wouldn’t turn back on. The third drop for the 7 Plus resulted in major screen malfunctioning rendering it unusable. After three corner drops, the iPhone 7 screen cracked and split, the 7 Plus screen shattered. So hold on tight. Whatever phone you own, a strong sturdy case paired with a comprehensive protection plan is key. To learn more about affordable plans that cover drops, spills and malfunctions, visit squaretrade.com. E N T E RTA I N M E N T Give A Gift of Entertainment

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

“La La Land” The holidays are just around the corner—in fact, fact Christmas and Chanukah arrive on the same day this year. It’s a time to be happy, give gifts to loved ones and share good times with family and friends. It’s also a time to come up with a special present for every one your gift list—and what could be better than a gift of entertainment. If you have film fans on your list, December is the perfect time to go into the movies since most of the Oscar contenders are being released this month—fine films like “Silence” and “Fences” from Paramount, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” from Disney and a new musical that should be especially enchanting for Angelina,”La La La Land.” For the theatre fans, two fine musicals will be gracing Los Angeles stages in December and January:”The King and I” at the Pantages and a brand new musical “Amalie” at the Ahmanson. And remember, a DVD is a perfect stocking

“Silence” stuffer and so easy to wrap. It is interesting to note that Martin Scorsese’s latest film, “Silence,” opened at the Vatican on November 29 this year. This is actually appropriate since “Silence” is the story of two Jesuit priests who face violence and persecution in 17th century Japan when they try to locate their mentor and protect Japanese Catholics from harm. It stars Liam Neeson, Adam Driver (“Star Wars”) and Andrew Garfield, who is expected to be nominated for his performance in this gripping film. Garfield also turned in another Oscar worthy performance in Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” about a conscientious objector who served as a medic and saved the lives of 75 men. “Fences,” starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis (TVs “How To Get Away With Murder”), is based in August Wilson’s play and deals with the strained relationship between a father and son. There is also Oscar’s buzz

attached to this film, which will be in theaters soon. For “Star Wars” fans, you can’t miss with Disney’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” which will open on December 16 citywide. It stars Felicity Jones and Diego Luna, unlikely heroes that join forces to steal plans for the Death Star. This film sets up the epic “Star Wars” anthology. If you see it at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, you will enjoy a themed stage show and you, and your guests can take your photo at the Stormtrooper meet-and-greet. There will also be a curated collection of vehicle models and hero costumes from the production of the film on display. How cool is that! For tickets and further information go to 1-800-Disney6 (800347-6396) or visit www. elcapitantickets.com. For all the song and dance guys and gals on your holiday gift list, you can’t go wrong with “ La La Land” starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. It’s the romantic

December 14, 2016

story about a jazz musician (Gosling) and an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) who met while pursuing their dreams. It will soon open citywide. For theatre fans on your gift list, consider seeing the revival of “The King and I” which won four Tony Awards this past year. The show is filled with great music and has an engrossing story. You can also give a Flex Package as a present for the theatre buff you want to please. With Flex, you can choose 4 or more shows for a very reasonable price. Upcoming this year at the Pantages: “An American in Paris,” “Rent,” “Motown,” “Finding Neverland,” “The Book of Mormon” and more. For further information call 866-755-2929 or www. hollywoodpantages.com From Dec. 4 through Jan 15, the Ahmanson Theatre presents a brand-new stage

musical, “Amalie,” based on the 2001 romantic film comedy with music by Daniel Messe. Phillipa Soo stars in the title role. In the new year “Amalie” heads to Broadway where previews will begin in March—so we have the chance to see it first over here in La La Land before it heads off to the Big Apple. And if you want a nice little stocking stuffer, here are a little DVD titles to consider. For pet lovers, young and older, check out “The Secret Life of Pets.” Discover what your furry little darlings might be up to when you’re not looking. Another animated charmer, now available on DVD and Blu-ray, is Disney’s “Finding Dory,” starring the voice of Ellen Degeneres as the lovable, but very forgetful little blue fish named Dory, who sets out to find her parents with the help of Nemo.

Ben Affleck in “The Accountant” magic by cinematographer Don Burgess, fails to breathe any life into his film. It lacks energy and pacing, which is not only glacial, at times, it also fails to engage from the get- go. However, the special effects are first rate. This is definitely not a remake of the 1943 Bogart/Bergman classic romantic drama “Casablanca”. That story written by the Epstein brothers and Howard Koch in 1943, hit the Oscar jackpot when it came to WW II romantic movie dramas. And, it is still considered the gold standard of WW II romantic dramas. “Allied”, as a wartime espionage story however, is a different kettle of fish. Villeneuve’s baby, and like any father, he makes sure that you like his family. The technical credits shine, especially the camera work of cinematographer Bradford Young. This film will definitely be part of the Oscar mix come February 2017. Rating: Four stars out of five. “The Accountant” a 2016 action thriller directed by Gavin O’Connor and written by Bill Debuque, stars Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K.Simons, John Bernthal, John Lithgow, Jeffery Tambor and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. The film is a typical martial arts, high body-count popcorn flick that has more than enough blood and collateral damage to satisfy even the most jaded of millennials who attend movies today. The story is not only simplistic, but really strains one’s credulity. We’re expected to buy into a film about one Christian Wollf (Ben Affleck), a high-functioning autistic mathematics savant, and an accountant to shady corporate clients who need Christian to ‘uncooked’ their books to fend off the U.S. Treasury Department from performing those pesky tax audits. In between clients, Christian gets to reduce the bad guy population, via A-K14 weapons that appear to shoot thousands of rounds of ammo in a few seconds. It’s like thumbing

through a comic book in order to follow the story line with such obvious cardboard characters. Like most of these action films, the story gets overly complicated in making sure the viewers get lots of narrative threads and action scenes in the hope that we don’t realize how weak and thin the story really is. “The Accountant” is a formulaic plot film with few surprises that waste the talents of Affleck, who is a fine actor that deserves better material. Simmons, an Oscar winner for his riveting performance in last year’s “Whiplash” also deserves better. Kendrick plays a character who wouldn’t be missed if she wasn’t in the script. The film also gives the appearance of solid actors like Lithgow and Tambor, performing as a favor to the producers. The villain, however, as usual, gets the-over-the-top plum role. In this case, that plum falls to John Bernthal as Brax, Christian’s young brother who gets to chew the scenery. All action movies need the services of many creative people. One creative professional that all action films definitely require, beside the director, is a cinematographer who knows how to deliver the magic to the screen. Seamus Mc Garvey is that man for “The Accountant”. Rating: Two stars out of five. All three films can be seen in a movie Cineplex near you. Happy Holidays.

Passing Anti-LGBT Bill Could Cost Texas Billions By Desert Star Staff AUSTIN, Texas – Some state leaders are prioritizing a so-called anti-LGBT bathroom bill for the upcoming session of the Legislature, but a new report warns that passage could cost Texas billions of dollars and thousands of jobs. The Texas Association of Business has released a study pointing out that the backlash from passing a bill forcing people to use the toilet of the gender on their birth certificate could cost the state’s businesses up to $8.5 billion and 185,000 jobs. Chuck Smith, CEO of Equality Texas, an LGBT advocacy group, says one business segment is likely to be the hardest hit by protests and boycotts. “There are certain industries that are on the front line of damage, and those would be those that deal with travel and tourism,

conventions, sporting events and entertainment events,” he points out. Some state leaders, particularly Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, have put the bathroom bill, which sponsors say protects religious freedoms, at the top of their agenda. But others, such as House Speaker Joe Straus, say there are more important issues. Smith says there are other bills that have been, or are expected to be, filed that would limit the rights of the state’s LGBT community. “There has been legislation filed that would prohibit Home Rule Charter cities in Texas from passing nondiscrimination ordinances,” Smith points out. “The legislation would also nullify any existing nondiscrimination ordinances.” Smith adds that recent polls show about 75 percent of Texans oppose

Smith says states such as North Carolina and Arizona lost hundreds of millions of dollars after passing “religious freedom” bills aimed at LGBT and other groups.

Others really faced a terrible predicament because they used this money to buy a home or to get an education,” Schiff said. “It’s a terrible position to be in.” Schiff’s petition to allow the guard members to keep the bonus money was widely supported. Schiff said he’s ready to stand by the vets. “These soldiers had every right to feel betrayed,” he said. “They were made this bargain, they were offered these bonuses; there was no reason for them to question them. said Tim Esser, founder of the Tour De Palm Springs. The change of venue was brought on by scheduling conflicts in Palm Springs. Organizers say fewer and fewer riders were coming out for the tour because of the earlier start date. “What happens is these big club, riders of twenty, thirty in a group, they plan their vacations around this event so it was very difficult

for them with the date change. So we’re going to be bringing it back to the original date, which is the middle of February,” Esser said. The event raises money for local charities in the Coachella Valley including United Cerebral Palsy and Disabled American Veterans. In the last five years, the tour has raised one point two five million dollars. “When they are able to December 14, 2016

participate in the ride, the smiles that come on their face are just amazing. They are able to be out there with all the rest of the folks that are riding in the day, they just smile, they just start glowing,” said Michael Stearns, executive director of CV Spin. Last Minute Holiday Gift Tips

By Desert Star Staff Everyone needs to find great holiday gifts in a pinch from time to time. But just because you’re shopping last minute doesn’t mean these gifts shouldn’t be thoughtful. Here are a few tips to make sure that presents

purchased in the 11th hour are appreciated and enjoyed. Strike the Right Mood: There is good news. You don’t need to break the bank on a day-long shopping excursion in order to find great items. Consider simple gifts that create that special feeling

of home, such as American Home by Yankee Candle. The line features candles with holiday fragrances -- such as Fresh Balsam Fir and Holiday Apple Wreath -- for under $20 and are great for holiday entertaining. Jars, tumblers, tea lights and wax cubes

all make warm, thoughtful gifts and are available at the grocery stores, drug stores and big box stores you visit every day, so you can conveniently do your holiday shopping during a busy time of year. Visit YCamericanhome. com to learn more. Sign Them Up: A subscription service is a gift that keeps on giving all year long. In this regard, you can think beyond magazine subscriptions these days. “Subscription boxes,” which offer great products on a monthly basis, are an ontrend and fun gift that can be purchased in an instant. Themes for boxes are as eclectic as your gift recipients themselves and include books, socks, healthful snacks and beauty products. Go Gift Cards: Crunched for time? Not exactly sure what a friend or family member wants or needs? Opt for a gift card that you can easily email or print out and put into a card. Many thirdparty gift card aggregators

exist online, where you can quickly dash to a website and complete your transaction. Large online retailers also offer online gift cards to help you find a present fast -- no matter his or her personal sense of style or interests. Wrap Smart: Having extra materials for quick gift wrapping just makes sense all year long, but particularly during the holidays. Stay organized with a designated gift wrapping station throughout the season that features greeting cards, tape, scissors, ribbon, wrapping paper, gift bags, and tags. Gift bags and a bit of tissue paper can make a last minute gift go from flat to festive in moments, so stock up on these items in a variety of sizes so you are always ready to wrap. Don’t get stressed about last minute gifting this holiday season. Being prepared can help ensure you put smiles on the faces of everyone on your list. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff In this digital age, you may go days without using a pen and paper, but there are many reasons to skip the devices and stick to writing things down. From staying organized to planning your week to tracking career growth, here are a few things to take note of when it comes to taking notes. • Taking notes in longhand can help you retain more information, suggests a study from Princeton and UCLA, as taking notes makes you more likely to process the information and reframe it in your own words. Not only that, your notepad is likely to contain fewer distractions than your laptop, tablet or phone. • Look professional and stay organized at your next interview or meeting. Taking notes will make you look engaged and interested in what is happening, and a professional planner and/ or notebook are must-have workplace accessories. Brands like AT-A-GLANCE offer professional, yet stylish

planners, matching desk pads, notepads and wall calendars in a variety of styles and formats. Visit MyAtAGlanceStory.com for organizational inspiration. • Making comments in your notebook or planner helps you become the publisher of your story, capturing your life’s moments along the way. These are tools that help you look back on events in a tangible way. • Rid yourself of the everpresent stress that comes with a busy life. Seeing everything written down will give you a sense of control. You will feel confident in knowing you have it all set, and keeping a record of your tasks in one location gives you an easy, organized way to get a grasp on your days. • Using a planner to track your schedule can actually help you find missing time. You will have a better grasp on what is coming up and may even see a break that leaves you time to schedule dinner with a friend, try that new recipe you’ve been craving, or

time to search for that special birthday present you need for the party this weekend. • Increase productivity by maximizing the 24 hours that you have. Seeing everything on paper will help you plan and prioritize. Having “scheduled downtime” can help you to know when to go full steam ahead and when to take a break and unwind for a bit.

• Tracking in one place can also help prevent committing to things you can’t do. Wall calendars for the house are a great tracking tool for multiple schedules, helping day-today tasks run smoothly. • Whether you’re planning a wedding or a work conference, a planner is among the most important assets you can use to aid your efforts,

helping you keep track of all the details, large and small. Find a favorite pen and a favorite planner, and get back to basics. It may have been a little while since you relied on paper, but you may find that writing things down helps you keep better track of all of life’s little details and makes you the publisher of your own story. someone else is a red flag. • Know your options. Is the seller requiring that you pay cash? Be wary. That is a red flag, too. • Know the paperwork. Car thieves often replace the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) from the stolen car with one that belongs to a legally registered vehicle. This process, which is known as “VIN cloning” or “retagging,” allows car thieves to cover up the car’s true history and forge title documents.

Be sure to check that all the VINs located throughout the car (dashboard, driver door, under the hood) match each other and the paperwork. No matter where you buy your car or from whom, be sure you understand the ins and outs of your payment plan. If you are getting an auto loan from a bank, familiarize yourself with its terms before signing. You can learn more by visiting wellsfargo.com/auto-loans. Ask questions and do your research. Getting Back to Basics: The Lost Art of Writing Things Down

Hot Tips to Avoid Buying a Hot Vehicle By Desert Star Staff As more consumers turn to online sites and social media to find deals on used cars from private party sellers, experts warn that buyers should beware. “Private sellers often offer some of the best deals available on used cars, but these transactions may also bear a certain amount of risk,” says John Rasmussen, Wells Fargo’s head of Personal Lending Group. Over 707,000 motor vehicles were reported stolen www.desertstarweekly.com

in the United States in 2015, according to the FBI, a 3.1 percent rise over 2014. A portion of these vehicles are resold to consumers like you, which can mean problems down the line. Consumers who buy a stolen car run the risk of the vehicle impoundment and troubles with the insurance agency should the car be involved in an accident. You may also find it virtually impossible to get your money back on the purchase.

To avoid this fate, Wells Fargo Direct Auto loan experts are sharing some smart tips. • Know your vehicle. This means doing more than just a test drive. Find out the vehicle history by using online resources like Carfax. Have a mechanic look at the vehicle. • Know the seller. Do your best to make sure the seller is who they say they are and that their name appears on the title and paperwork. Any person trying to sell a car on behalf of December 14, 2016

MUSIC Music Books Gift Guide BY ROBERT KINSLER

Those whose interest in music extends beyond merely listening have plenty of choice books to choose from this holiday season. And while much of the focus on Winehouse over the past five years has focused on her battles with drug and alcohol addiction, author Donald Brackett’s “Back to Black: Amy Winehouse’s Only Masterpiece” puts the focus on her second and most brilliant album, “Back to Black.” The 2006 release spawned a number of hit singles and has had a lasting impact with the subsequent success of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and, more recently, Adele. Expert: Plan Now to Avoid a Holiday Debt Hangover

By Desert Star Staff ANN ARBOR, Mich. – While red is one of the colors of the holiday season, it’s not a good look for a bank account, and experts say racking up holiday debt can lead to a cycle that’s hard to break. The average American will spend $936 on holiday gifts this year, the second highest amount on record, according to the National Retail Federation. Kathryn Greiner, a financial literacy specialist with University of Michigan Credit Union, said the pressure to provide this time of year can lead people to take extreme measures, including turning to payday lenders. “About 75 percent of all payday loans are payoffs for old payday loans,” she said. “And a lot of folks who use these end up taking not just weeks but

years to pay them off.” Greiner said using cash instead of credit cards to pay for holiday purchases can help curb the tendency to overspend. She also recommends developing a written budget for next year’s holidays as soon as these are over. Many credit unions offer free financial counseling to help their members stick to their financial goals. The urge to “keep up with the Joneses” can be particularly hard to avoid this time of year, but Greiner said spending beyond one’s means only serves to suck the joy right out of the season. “I see a lot of people who are kind of miserable over the holidays or dread them because they can’t keep up,” she added. “It’s a pressure that they can’t even face and it’s hard to articulate.”

She also added that it’s particularly important for spouses and partners to have an open, honest talk about what they can and

can’t afford. According to a recent survey, more than one in four Americans said they plan to rack up debt this holiday season that will

linger more than a month, with two-thirds of those expecting they will need three or more months to pay it off. Source: PR Newswire

Lawmakers Advance Public-Lands Transfer Despite Public Opposition

By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. – A group of lawmakers meets tomorrow in Cheyenne to advance a state constitutional amendment to manage federal lands if they’re transferred

to states. The measure would govern lands currently managed by the U.S. Forest Service and BLM, not national parks or monuments. Critics are concerned lands could be sold off to the highest

bidder, limiting access to outdoor recreation. Chamois Andersen, executive director of the Wyoming Wildlife Federation, said protecting lands owned by all Americans is an issue that

cuts across partisan divides. “And it has nothing to do with whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat, whether you like the federal government or not,” she said. “We all recognize the risk is too great. And we all want to work toward solutions when it comes to federal-lands management.” Proponents of the amendment claim the feds are bad managers, and are slow to grant oil, gas and mining permits. In November, a Wyoming legislative committee charged with natural resources heard more than two hours of comments from hunters, anglers and conservation groups opposed to the move. Only two people spoke in favor of the proposal. A recent study commissioned by the Wyoming Legislature found state management would be too costly, and adhering to federal multiple-use and

environmental standards would present significant challenges. Anderson said lawmakers also should consider the potential loss of money from tourism and outdoor recreation, a sustainable and ongoing source of revenue. “More than a billion dollars per year is provided by hunters and anglers and watchable wildlife enthusiasts,” she added. “This is just going to continue, the use of these lands, and the important dollars that hunters and anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts bring to the counties, and thus to Wyoming state coffers.” A Western Attorney Generals’ report, chaired by Wyoming AG Peter Michael, found no legal merit for a constitutional amendment to transfer public lands. Governor Matt Mead told the Casper Star-Tribune the move also would be financially impractical. Source: PR Newswire

Following the Money in Illinois

By Desert Star Staff SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -Exactly how much money did candidates spend during the November general election? Recent data from the National Institute on Money in State Politics shows candidates for state House and Senate seats in Illinois alone raised more than $95 million this election cycle. Illinois ranks second in the nation for money raised to support state legislative races. Sarah Brune, executive director for the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, said her group plans to discuss Illinois campaign spending and possible limits from a local and national perspective at a forum next month, because, she said, the spending has grown out of control. “It’s really mind blowing, I think, for somebody who is working hard just to make ends meet,” Brune said. “I think it’s hard for people to reconcile the fact that almost $100 million was raised on politics, when there are issues that are affecting people’s daily lives that didn’t get talked about in this election,”

Illinois ranks second in the nation when it comes to money spent in state legislative races. (ustreasury.gov) There are 12.1 million people in Illinois, and there were 61 contested races. The only state to top fundraising in Illinois was California, with $118.9 million dollars raised. But the population of that state is three times larger than Illinois’, and it had a greater number of contested races in the 2016 general election. Brune said there was an increase in state super PAC

donations this election cycle. She said that’s part of why her group is pushing for more regulation and transparency. “We’ve also advocated for any politically active group that’s giving large donations, they need to register as a political committee and disclose their donors,” Brune said. “And we’re going to be pursuing that cause to really try to make people know who’s giving

money to try to affect elections for public office in their area.” Illinois is the only state that has a legal provision allowing limits to be lifted by candidate self-funding or spending from super PACs. Brune said this year, more than a third of contested state House and Senate races in the state had contribution limits removed due to candidate self-funding or super PAC spending.

Men Found With More Than 50 Firearms, Meth, in Palm Springs

By KMIR News Staff Palm SPRINGS, Ca. -Two Palm Springs men allegedly found to be in possession of more than 50 guns and nearly $400,000

worth of methamphetamine were behind bars today, a sheriff’s spokesman said. Phillip Prieto, 56, and Juan Gonzalez, 43, were arrested Thursday and booked

on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sales and possession of a controlled substance while armed, according to Deputy Armando Munoz.

Both men were being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning in lieu of $500,000 bail, jail records show. Search warrants were served in the 38400 South Palm Canyon Drive and in the 5000 block of East Waverly Drive by members of the Coachella Valley Narcotics Task Force and the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force, Munoz said. Deputies confiscated 54 firearms, about 21 pounds of meth, ``thousands’’ of rounds of ammunition, about $7,000 in cash and other items allegedly related to meth sales, he said. The narcotics had a street value exceeding $390,000, according to Munoz. Source: KMIR

CA Children’s Advocates Brace for Possible Repeal of Obamacare

LOS ANGELES – Come January, the Republican-led Congress will have the Affordable Care Act, often referred to as “Obamacare,” in its sights. A new report by the Urban Institute suggests repealing even portions of the law will leave 4.9 million Californians without health insurance. Over a ten-year period, the state could also lose more than $160 million in federal funding for health coverage. Kelly Hardy senior managing director of health policy at the group, Children Now, said

these are gains that would be sorely missed by families, including more than a half-million children who are now insured. “More and more kids have been getting health coverage, and so what that means for parents is that you don’t have to worry that you’re one playground accident away from bankruptcy, because that is really what can happen if kids are uninsured,” she explained. Detractors of the ACA balk at this argument as a scare tactic, and House Speaker

Paul Ryan has said that a partial repeal would allow for, as he put it, a “good transition period” for the millions of people who were able to get health coverage because of the plan. Joan Alker, executive director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, said there’s a lot of misinformation about the ACA. For instance, it isn’t true that it covers undocumented immigrants. Alker advises people to learn more, because changes may happen soon. December 14, 2016

“Congressional leaders are moving very quickly to try to do this in January, as soon as they return from the holidays,” she said. “So, people are not aware that this could happen so quickly and also, they’re not aware of the consequences.” The Urban Institute report predicts those consequences include a major disruption in the insurance industry, and a much higher number of uninsured Americans than before the Affordable Care Act ever went into effect. CV REP 2016 Holiday Thank You Party for sponsors and supporters

Tours of the theatre were offered throughout the night (L-R) Lori Torchia, Pia Rose, Joe Giarrusso, Michael Monachino, Debbie Green, Laurence Luckinbill, and David Cohan. (credit: Shari Lipman) By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Last week CV REP founder and Artistic Director Ron Celona, along with over 350 attendees, celebrated the holidays with a ‘Thank You’ gathering for sponsors and supporters at the Bonta Restaurant, in Cathedral City. The highly successful, award-winning, Equity professional theatre, located in Rancho Mirage, launched its search for a larger live theatre venue in 2016. The current venue, an intimate 88 seat nicely appointed theatre that has been presenting top quality live theatre for eight years has

been planning to expand their operations for some time. The public’s demand for more season tickets, sent the board of directors into full planning mode. CV REP Theatre has announced their search for a larger venue has selected. The Capital Campaign for acquiring the former IMAX Theatre in Cathedral City, on the corner of Date Palm Drive and Highway 111, will be renovated to accommodate 200 patrons. The project will take two years to accomplish and is currently underway. The Holiday and Thank You party was attended by many of the Valley’s ‘shakers

and makers’ along with local celebrities from stage, screen, TV and the Valley’s vibrant music and cabaret scenes. Cathedral City Mayor Stan Henry, along with Council members Mark Carnevale and Shelley Kaplan, along with various sponsors and theatre supporters received personally conducted tours of the old IMAX theatre, along with briefings about the new theatre plans and renderings presentations by CV REP executive members and CV REP volunteers. The Holiday mood was upon the crowd and one could move and schmooze to one’s heart’s content. Valley
