‘Mame’

A classic musical based on the novel “Auntie Mame” at The Palm Canyon Theatre By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, Calif– Mame, starring Se Layne and Morgana Corelli, will take the stage at Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) December 1-17. Layne will play the eccentric Mame Dennis who is entrusted with the care of her 10-year-old nephew, Patrick, played by Ben Van Dijk. Mame leads an artsy,

bohemian, intellectual lifestyle with best friend Vera Charles, played by Corelli, always atthe-ready with a martini in hand. Rather than have the new family member alter her free-spirited lifestyle, Auntie Mame teaches Patrick how to live each day to the fullest. The musical follows the story of the 1955 novel “Auntie Mame” by Patrick Dennis as

well as the 1956 Broadway play, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee and the 1958 film. Lawrence and Lee also wrote the musical, which premiered on Broadway in 1966. The show portrays how Mame and Patrick influence each other through the years. Audiences watch Patrick grow up, with the older Patrick played by

Scott Clinkscales. The PCT production is directed and choreographed by Stephanie Eley. Eley was in the original Broadway cast of Dreamgirls and My One and Only and performed in the national and international tours of A Chorus Line from 1977-1980. Steven Smith will direct the production’s music with well-known songs, written by

Broadway great and former Palm Springs resident Jerry Herman, including “My Best Girl,” “Bosom Buddies,” and “We Need a Little Christmas.” Derik Shopinski is the show’s costume designer. The production’s scenic design is by Allan Jensen. Lighting designs are by J.W. Layne, Continues on Page 2

Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s Palm Springs Honeymoon Hideaway KMIR News Staff Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s honeymoon hideaway in the Southern California desert is back on the market. The Palm Springs landmark designed by influential modernist architect William Krisel has been listed for $5.9 million. The home was famously rented out by “The King” and his wife following their 1967 wedding in Las Vegas. The midcentury modern residence at 1350 Ladera Circle features five bedrooms and five bathrooms on a little more than an acre of living space at the foot of

the San Jacinto Mountains, according to the listing held by Mary Kay Nibley of Rodeo Realty. The Presley’s enjoyed spacious indoor living areas with curved walls and floorto-ceiling windows, along with outdoor amenities that include a lush lawn, tennis court and swimming pool. For those who find the price a tad steep, the Presley’s other honeymoon estate in Beverly Hills is welcoming guests to stay the night for $2,950 a night. Photos courtesy of Rodeo Realty via NBC LA. 2018: The Year Northwest Orcas Recover? By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE -- The devastating video of a starving polar bear has pulled on Americans’ heartstrings this week. And scientists say West Coast orcas are in a similarly dire situation. The population of southern resident killer whales dropped to 76, the lowest number in 30 years. Southern residents are the only community, or “clan,” of killer whales on the endangered species list, and they spend part of the year in Puget Sound. Catherine Kilduff, senior attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity, said they’ve had a terribly hard year. She said there actually is drone footage of emaciated whales, much like the polar bear. “In the case of southern resident killer whales, it’s because they’re not finding salmon,” Kilduff said. “And a lot of that is because there’s not enough being released from dams, or the dams really

ought to be taken down in the long term, for example in the lower Snake River. But we have to address these problems that are limiting the killer whales’ food availability.” Research has found the southern residents have had greater competition for fish in recent years, from harbor seals, sea lions, and other marine mammals. Kilduff said climate change is also playing a role in the orcas’ dwindling numbers. Reproduction is down as well. An orca calf that disappeared in September was last seen with a condition known as “peanut head,” where areas around the blowhole that should be filled with fat instead are concave, indicating starvation. The situation for southern residents becomes more critical with each passing year, but Kilduff said 2018 could be the year things change. “We don’t need additional

(Ingrid Taylar/Flickr) time before we take action, so there’s really no excuse for 2018 not to be just the year of action for southern resident killer whales,” she said. “They’re so iconic to Puget Sound, they’re so important to the ecosystem and to tourism.”

Kilduff said the best way to support the whales is to designate more waters off the West Coast critical habitat. The Center for Biological Diversity and other organizations submitted more than 100,000 signatures supporting this

plan in 2016, and Kilduff said the government promised to make a decision on it in 2017. But she said plans for conservation efforts during the Trump administration have fallen on deaf ears.

is much more dangerous. Parking lots already are dangerous, leading to more

than 50,000 crashes and 500 deaths around the country each year, according to the National Safety Council. With increased traffic from holiday shoppers, accidents rise this time of year. Russ Rader, senior vice president for communications with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, sets the bustling scene. “They may be distracted, thinking about the person they forgot to get a gift for,” he explains. “Maybe they’re on the phone, maybe they’re eating while driving as they’re rushing around to do their holiday shopping. All of those things can lead to crashes.” Rader says when pedestrians are added to the mix, the scene becomes even more dangerous. He advises drivers to stay focused on the task, don’t mess with devices in the car

and watch their speed. He says people also should space out their holiday shopping to avoid the stress of a last-minute rush. Rader says new technologies in vehicles are making them safer. “Every new vehicle now will have a standard rear-view camera, for example, which can help you in backing situations in parking lots,” he points out. “But you shouldn’t overly rely on backup cameras because they don’t always show you the full picture.” Rader says objects in the shade may not show up on backup cameras, for instance. He says many new vehicles include another safety feature known as automatic emergency braking. This feature helps prevent a crash if the driver doesn’t see an object in time to stop.

State of CA: Keep Cell Phones Away from Your Body By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — New guidelines from the State of California warn of possible links between cell phones and cancer, and advise people to avoid holding the phone up to their head. The guidelines released Wednesday say that although there is no definitive link, some studies indicate long-term heavy cell phone use can lead to cancer of the brain, the acoustic nerve and salivary gland, plus low sperm count, headaches and sleep issues. Elie Marks, director of the California Brain Tumor Association, said she hopes people will finally listen now that the California Department of Public Health is backing

up what activists have been saying for years. “People need to know that cell phones as they are currently used are not safe,” Marks said. “So, we need to keep them away from our bodies - not keep them in pockets, not keep them in bras, don’t sleep with them near us at night. Children are especially vulnerable, so this is very helpful.” The guidelines also recommend that people use a headset or simply text rather than placing calls. The authors also note that phones put out more RF energy when they are searching for a signal or downloading large files. So, they recommend turning your phone off while in a fast-moving car, bus or train, and keeping the phone away from your body while downloading or streaming. Marks said this document was first prepared

Help enrolling or changing coverage is available online. (FirmBee/Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff Health: Friday is the last day of open enrollment for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act for 2018, a deadline even those with insurance should heed. The open enrollment window was cut in half this year and the federal budget for advertising it was slashed by 90 percent. But Scott Mulhauser, a board member with the Consumers for Quality Care, points out that despite efforts to repeal the program, it’s still working, and it’s important for everyone who needs insurance and those already in the marketplace to look at what’s available. “Even if you plan to keep the same policy, if you’re looking for a new one, plans and policies are constantly changing, and this is the crucial moment to take note of what best serves your needs,” he states.

To enroll or change your plan in New York, you can go to nystateofhealth.ny.gov. With all the negative comments in the news about

skyrocketing premium costs, some people may believe marketplace insurance is now simply unaffordable. Mulhauser acknowledges that costs have gone up.

“But subsidies are going up in a lot of states, too,” he stresses. “And so what that means is you may still be able to find a good deal, but you can only take a look in these final days.” Navigators are available to help consumers pick the right plan. Mulhauser adds that some policies may change their prescription plans, their co-pay or co-insurance requirements. So getting that help can be critical because the changes can be confusing. “It leads to coverage denials,” he points out. “It leads to increased costs. So for Americans shopping on healthcare.gov or in state marketplaces, they are open for business, but it’s a shorter enrollment this year. And so it’s important to shop around and pick the plan for you.”

The Fierros Family - Pegasus Family of the Year. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Pegasus Therapeutic Riding presented its 23rd Annual Riders Awards Luncheon complete with Santa Clause. Clients got to sit on Santa’s knee and parents were busy with cell phones taking pictures. The kid’s big smiles tell it all. The event was held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Emerald Ballroom on Sunday, December 10th. The whole ballroom was filled with parents,

teachers, and clients. Some clients are in wheelchairs but still dance with parents help. Everyone was treated to a delicious lunch of turkey, chicken or spaghetti. Dan McGrath served as Emcee again this year with Alicia Gomez doing the translations into Spanish. Michael Capitanelli did his usual fun DJ dances, especially for the kids. He had the whole dance floor filled with dancers doing the Macarena,

YMCA and more. He had a lot of the kids and adults competing for the twist dance. He knows how to get the place jumping and the kids enjoying it on the dance floor. It’s a special time for them and they can show they can dance too. There was no silent auction this year. They tried something new with a very large raffle of over 40 gifts. You could buy just one ticket or an arm’s length of tickets. Dan McGrath

said to get someone with long arms like his to buy the arm’s length of tickets. Some of the clients get a stuffed toy as they entered. There was a lot of dancing before the awards ceremony where all clients get a medal. They are so proud of their medals and the smiles are huge and beaming. There are always a couple special awards each year. The Pegasus Family of the year 2017 was THe Fierros Family

There was a cocktail reception with delicious appetizers that Spencer’s is known for. It was a night of fun filled action with entertainment and a lively live auction. There were special guests, fabulous entertainment, and a huge silent auction. Guests were entertained

with D J Baz during the cocktail hour where appetizers of sandwich sliders of Angus beef and roasted vegetables and French fries in a buffet style. The first singer was Julie Garnye who had the audience in the palm of her hand with her fabulous voice. She performed on a small stage filled with Poinsettias’. A Christmas Tree decorated in white stood in the corner. Alex Korey was the next artist to perform. Alex is known for her

with Melissa Fierro, the rider. The Pegasus Rider of the Year was Alexis Ryals. They came onto the stage to get their ward and stayed as they were asked to pull the first few raffle prizes. Riding horses is not only therapeutic physically but it builds confidence in their abilities even if its limited with a disability. Riding builds muscles in arms and legs. ability to take a song and make it hilarious. I love her song I want to be Rich Famous and powerful that had the guests clapping and laughing aloud. Her years as a stage performer makes her a great performer. The special guest of the night was Amazon Eve that stands very tall above everyone else. Therefore, the name Amazon Eve, aka, Erika Ervin. She towered above founders of Sanctuary Palm Springs, David Rothmiller and L D Thompson.

I asked why the name Holiday Socks and they said it was because of the silent auction items, Christmas Socks. There were also wreaths for sale. The bidding on the live auctions met with a lot of applause when the bids went higher and higher. The tree went for $1,200. One of my favorites was the big Party that came with 5 hours of clean up after the party, a first I think. A week-long trip to Buenos Aires and a $1000 gift card

went for $4,700 and there was more. All proceeds went to Sanctuary house where kids can transition from foster care at 18 to a home with other kids who need to learn about living in the real world until age 21. It’s not a free ride as they have to work, go to school and keep the house clean and neat. It’s a safe house where they get the help they need and are with other kids going thru the same problems.

FCC’s net neutrality vote: What’s at stake & why you should care By Desert Star Staff As the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) prepares to vote on whether net neutrality rules passed by the Obama administration should be overturned, here’s a reminder of what exactly is at stake, and why you should care. Simply defined, net neutrality – also called the open internet – is the concept that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) must treat all online content equally and not give preference to any one digital content provider. The current rules, put in place during Barack Obama’s administration, consider the internet to be a public utility and therefore subject to regulation. In short, ISPs must deliver all websites at the same speed, representing fairness. However, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who was appointed to his position by President Donald Trump, proposed in May that the internet’s public-utility status should be abolished. If he gets his way, your internet experience could soon be transformed from an equal playing field to a money-driven enterprise. According to Pai’s opponents, there are two ways that money could influence the way you experience the internet. The first scenario is that you, the consumer, could be forced to pay more money to your ISP to ensure that your favorite websites are delivered to you at a suitable speed. Some have speculated that this could come in the form of paying more for an “unlimited” internet package, which gives you access to the things you already have but might soon be taken away. The other scenario is that corporations could pay more to receive preferential treatment by

ISPs, tilting the internet in their favor over their smaller (and poorer) competitors. Imagine that scenario as paid priority “fast lanes.” ISPs could also begin favoring content they own over that of their competitors. Who is in favor of net neutrality? Many popular websites posted protests scrapping net neutrality on Tuesday, including Reddit, Kickstarter, Etsy, Pinterest, Imgur, and Mozilla. “We’re sorry, but you’ve exceeded your allotted bandwidth for HTTPS://WWW. REDDIT.COM. Please update your internet plan to continue browsing,” Reddit wrote on its website, in a foreshadowing of what it believes will happen if Pai gets his way. Hacktivist group Anonymous also threatened a “destructive” cyberattack against the FCC’s website to protest plans to abolish net neutrality. The threat was tweeted by various accounts apparently linked to the collective. On Monday, a group of internet pioneers including Apple’s Steve Wozniak wrote an open letter calling the vote an “imminent threat to the internet we worked so hard to create.” They have called on the FCC to ask Pai to cancel the vote, calling the chairman’s plan “rushed and technically incorrect.” Silicon Valley companies have also come out in support of net neutrality. “We are disappointed that the proposal announced this week by the FCC fails to maintain the strong net neutrality protections that will ensure the internet remains open for everyone,” Facebook said in a statement last month. Google stressed that the current rules are “working well.” Netflix tweeted to a

follower last month that “this current draft order hasn’t been officially voted, so we’re lodging our opposition publicly and loudly now.” In an open letter to the FCC in April, a group of 1,000 small businesses – those who would not have as much power to compete on the internet against bigger and wealthier players – from around the US wrote: “We also depend on an open internet – including enforceable net neutrality rules that ensure big cable companies can’t discriminate against people like us.” Celebrities have also spoken out against Pai’s plan, including Cher and actor Mark Ruffalo. More than 100 actors, musicians, and other performers wrote a letter to the FCC earlier this month, stating that “without a free and open internet, so much music, writing, film, art, culture, passion, and creativity would be lost.” Pai hit back at his celebrity critics during an event at the conservative R Street Institute in Washington DC in November. In that speech, he scolded “Hollywood celebrities, whose

large online followings give them outsized influence in shaping the public debate,” specifically mentioning tweets from Cher and Ruffalo, according to The Hill. Meanwhile, everyday people are also part of the fight. Hundreds of protests took place across the US last Thursday. Most of the demonstrations occurred outside Verizon stores, the company which formerly employed Pai as a lawyer. An online Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality also saw some of the internet’s biggest players show their support on July 12. Among those rallying for the current regulations to remain in place were Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Other participants of the online action included Google, Twitter, Amazon, Airbnb, Netflix, Mozilla, Expedia. Why abandon net neutrality? While there are plenty of arguments and concerns against Pai’s proposal to scrap net neutrality, those in favor of doing so have their own reasons. They mostly argue that the current regulations are unnecessary

and stifle job creation and free-market competition. Pai stated in November that the current regulations on ISPs have “depressed investment in building and expanding broadband networks.” He called the regulations passed under the Obama administration in 2015 “heavyhanded” and a “mistake.” He says his proposal would allow the federal government to stop “micromanaging the internet.” He also aims to put power back in the hands of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) rather than the FCC. That idea has also been slammed by his opponents, who say that the FCC actively makes sure ISPs don’t abuse their power at present, but the FTC is a more passive system. Furthermore, there’s also a debate surrounding how much power the FTC has when it comes to taking action against ISPs. Pai is likely to get his way when the FCC votes on Thursday, as the commission is Republicancontrolled and expected to vote along party lines.

such as STEM careers, civics, business, arts and sports. Research director Dalia Mogahed said bridging the knowledge gap in media, online and in schools would create major change. “The conversation would shift from simply looking at the communities through the prism of security to understanding that the community should be spoken about just like everyone else: as fellow citizens, vested in the strengthening and progress of their country,” Mogahed said. Mogahed said there’s a close link between Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry, and the common element is fear. “It makes us more accepting of authoritarianism and prejudice,” she said. “And because of that, fear really kills freedom, fear is a threat to our democracy. And that’s why we all have to work on replacing fear with facts.” Last year, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights reported a sharp spike in the number of calls it received from people reporting they were the victims of bias crimes following the November 2016 election.

Avoiding Holiday Party Pitfalls

By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – Holiday parties can be fun, but they can also create an environment for bad judgment. With the ongoing revelations about high profile careers being derailed or ended by charges of sexual harassment, it’s wise to plan your holiday party carefully, whether you’re hosting or attending. Jennifer Mirus, an attorney who frequently deals with employment

issues, advises that anyone that hosts a holiday party, particularly a business event, should make expectations very clear and set rules. “Any time employees mix excessive alcohol and socializing with co-workers, that can be a recipe for sexually charged behavior and other types of inappropriate behavior that don’t reflect well on someone’s employment,” Mirus points out. There is a trend this year of companies cancelling or

not scheduling holiday parties because of the potential problems that can arise. According to Mirus, there’s a simple principle that applies in almost all cases: Any behavior that is unacceptable in the workplace probably is unacceptable at a workplace holiday party. “Intoxication or excessive intoxication is not acceptable,” she states. “Many employers offer taxi rides home or hotel stays, even, if someone is not in

Tesloop to the Rescue

By Pamela Price Imagine your worst car rental nightmare; you arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after a 14-hour transatlantic flight. Next, you stand in line for 45 minutes at a car rental office. After signing off on a car rental contract it’s time to locate your rental car. After this is accomplished, what energy you have goes toward battling traffic during the two hours plus drive to the desert. During this driving drama, one desert resident in a rental car (that was curiously not inspected by the car rental company before it left

their parking lot) experienced a front tire blow-out around midnight on the dark side, literally along Gene Autry Drive near the Palm Springs Airport. The driver ended up having to call the police and the rental car had to be towed. When the rental car client called me for advice, I gave him a one-word alternative to avoid, at all costs, another annoying car rental. The magic word? Tesloop. He replied, “Tesloop? Why didn’t you tell me about this before?” Tesloop is the longawaited solution for travelers in the market for a sane, safe and sensibly priced way to

reach LAX to avoid a costly and a potential problematical rental car. You can reserve a seat for a prompt pick up at LAX for the transfer to Palm Springs, as well. The rate ranges from $29 to $79 for a one-way smooth ride. The comfortable, clean five passenger Tesloop can pick you up at several easy to locate desert sites including the Westin Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage. Your seat is paid for in advance. Tesloop’s-drivers are referred to as “pilots”. We tested Tesloop airport transfer on November 16th waiting at the hotel’s entrance for a

6 p.m. pick up. The Tesloop arrived promptly at 6 pm with the Pilot efficiently transferring the luggage. The fare had been prepaid. “Tesloop is a blessing for travelers needing to catch their flight from Los Angeles International Airport. This means you don’t have to leave your own car or a car rental at LAX in a long-term parking lot and you can enjoy a leisurely journey to the airport with a driver who knows how to handle the challenging freeway traffic. It is about time that travelers had an alternative to the conventional

one-way car rental,” said desert resident, Grace Robbins. It’s obvious there has been an interest in a better way to access LAX. Traveling with Tesloop removes is reasonably priced, reliable and comfortable. Tesloop, for the record, “is aligned with Tesla’s mission statement. Tesloop and Tesla Motors are two separate entities.” Here’s what you need know when making arrangements between Palm Springs and LAX, go to www. tesloop.com and view the “available pickup times” or call the Tesloop Concierge at 818
