Impeachment, What Now? House Democrats IMPEACH President Donald Trump, case now goes to US Senate By Desert Star Staff The US House of Representatives has voted to impeach President Donald Trump for “abuse of power” and “obstruction of Congress.” The Republicanmajority Senate will now take
up the president’s trial. The outcome of Wednesday’s vote came as little surprise, with the Democrat-controlled House voting along party lines in what their GOP opponents perceive as a partisan attack
on a sitting US leader. Trump thus becomes the third-ever US president to be impeached by the House, after Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998. Both were acquitted in the Senate and remained in office till the

end of their terms. This is shaping up to be the scenario for Trump as well, as the Senate is under Republican control. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) has already said that he intends to hold a vote to dismiss
the charges, rather than dignify them with a debate. Ahead of the vote, Trump tweeted a quote from Mark Meadows (R-NC), who said that “this is all about Continues on Page 3
Greta Thunberg spars with German train company
By Desert Star Staff An overcrowded train ride through Germany shared by climate activist Greta Thunberg was taken by many as a swipe at Deutsche Bahn’s service. Still, the railway company soon shot back, reminding Greta about her seat in first-class. Returning home from a tour of protests, marches, and speeches, the Swedish climate activist traveled as she always does: on public transport and in emissionsfree vehicles. However, public transport occasionally brings with it delays and overcrowding, even in uberefficient Germany, as Thunberg discovered on Saturday. Tweeting a picture of herself sitting in a passageway beside a mountain of
luggage, Thunberg described her ride through Germany as “overcrowded. Traveling on overcrowded trains through Germany. not a good sign, because most Germans don’t even take the train. Reason: they are often late, get canceled a lot, a ticket costs too much & they’re often overcrowded. (@steffentei) December 15, 2019 Thunberg is returning to her native Sweden after spending much of 2019 traveling from country to country to lecture adults on climate change. Her carbonneutral journey across the Atlantic ocean in August (in a multimillion-euro racing yacht), her speech before UN leaders in New York the following month, and her protest marches outside the COP25 climate summit in Madrid in recent weeks all captured headlines and earned her Time Magazine’s ‘Person of the Year.’ However, her lack of solutions to the world’s climate woes and her insistence on using apocalyptic and doom-laden imagery in her speeches have earned her the scorn of not just fossil fuel fans, but scientists too, who say her movement hampers realistic debate on the issues.
‘Girl, stop talking right now’: Whoopi shuts down interrupting Meghan McCain
By Desert Star Staff The View host Whoopi Goldberg has finally done what everyone who’s ever watched the show was praying for her to do - shut down constantlyinterjecting co-host Meghan McCain after one too many entitled interruptions. McCain finally pushed Goldberg over the edge as she attempted to talk over cohost Sunny Hostin, discussing the looming impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. Boasting that she is a Political Analyst, not just a talk-show host like the four other women at the table, McCain successfully wrested the conversation away from Hostin and kept going. After a few polite attempts to stem the flow of words from McCain failed, Goldberg snapped. “Girl, please stop talking right now, she said, shocking her co-host into silence at last. The respite was brief, however. While McCain volunteered not to talk for the rest of the show, she immediately broke that promise. She began talking over Goldberg, triggering the other woman to reach for a commercial break.

The internet was overjoyed that someone had finally put McCain the daughter of the late Republican Senator John McCain, as she never allows anyone to forget - in her place. “Thank you, Whoopi, for gathering her!! She’s lucky they cut to commercial - it was about to get real AF,â€? one relieved viewer tweeted. Whoopi told Meghan, ‘do you know who my father is’ McCain that she is not the one. Not Today. And some just wanted McCain thrown off the show. I know for a fact, 100%, that Meghan McCain was that white kid who told her parents to shut the fuck up and talked back constantly. She is so damn, disrespectful! Whoopi is sick of her shit, and so is everyone else. She needs to go. #TheView — Julian Castro’s Baby Mama (@biafradenmark) December 16, 2019 #TheView FINALLY!!! Colder Weather, Holiday Stress Provide Dangerous Mix
By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa -The holiday season can be stressful for most people. But when you add cold weather, the risks for heart scares and other stress-induced illnesses become even greater. The American Heart Association has tips for Iowans to stay healthy in the coming days. Jolene Bopp, communications director for the American Heart Association of Iowa, says it’s no secret there’s an increase of heart disease and strokes this time of year. She says one way to avoid that is to not completely ditch your normal eating and

activity routine, just because the holidays are here. “You know, if you don’t completely give up your healthy habits, you won’t feel like you have to start over once the holidays are over,” she states. Another eating tip is to have a healthy snack before going to a party so that you don’t overindulge on treats. Bopp says colder weather provides an added layer of stress because it makes your heart work harder to keep your body warm. She says getting outside, even when it’s very cold, is good for the body. But she says it’s crucial to give yourself adequate breaks when doing outside activities, such as shoveling. Bopp says making sure you’re trained on CPR also is important. She says situations where CPR is suddenly needed, such as a holiday festivity, are never planned. “It can happen anytime,” she warns. “It can happen to the person next to you.
The American Heart Association says people gain an extra three pounds on average each holiday season. (ncgwg.org) It could be you and you’re relying on a stranger.” The American Heart Association has information on how and where you can receive CPR training
at its website, heart.org. There, you can also find tips on staying healthy during the holiday season. Disclosure: American Heart Association of Iowa

Bushfire backfire: Australian firefighters warn of ‘mega blaze’

By Desert Star Staff Australian firefighters are warning about an impending “mega blaze” as efforts to tackle over 100 bushfires have backfired spectacularly, while the country prepares for its possible hottest day on record. At least 20 houses have been razed, and over 400,000 hectares burned as fire crews battle over 100 fires in New South Wales. Residents are bracing for even more extreme temperatures this coming week, as historically hot weather is forecast. Authorities attempted to take advantage of cooler temperatures to carry out “back burning” or deliberately setting small fires to remove vegetation ahead of the main
bushfires and thus stop their spread. Still, the tactic appears to have failed, as crews lost control of the back burn and the flames spread beyond on containment lines, reaching as high as 70m-high (229 ft). The impending heatwave could lead to the hottest day in Australia’s recorded history, exceeding the current 50.7C (123.26F) record set back in 1960. So far, six people have died in the bushfires since September, and more than 700 homes have been destroyed, while towns and cities have been choking on noxious smoke from the wildfires. Air quality in Sydney is now worse than in Beijing and New Delhi.
the investigation would amount to foreign interference in the election, the Democrats said, adding that it all somehow circled back to the ‘Russiagate’ conspiracy. Republicans have countered that everything Trump has done was legitimately within his purview as head of state, that Zelensky himself swore he had not been pressured, the aid was delivered, and that Biden himself publicly boasted about threatening Ukraine into firing a prosecutor looking into Burisma. Though impeachment is a procedure provided for in the US Constitution, no president
has ever been successfully removed from office that way. Richard Nixon resigned from office in August 1974 under threat of impeachment over the Watergate scandal, less than two years after winning re-election in one of the biggest landslides in US history. However, Nixon had become deeply unpopular with his own party, as well as with the Democrats, by the time he resigned. By contrast, Trump’s approval ratings have actually risen in the GOP and among the independents since the impeachment proceedings against him were launched in September.

convicting a president based on innuendo, not on the facts. Even the Ukrainian president said there was no pressure!” He then proceeded to fly to Michigan, where he addressed a campaign rally as the vote in the House got underway. On Tuesday, the president sent a scorching six-page letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, saying the vote was “invalid,” and that the Democrats were “violating your oaths of office,”“breaking your
allegiance to the Constitution,” and “declaring open war on American democracy.” The “abuse of power” charges revolve around claims that Trump had withheld US military aid from Ukraine to pressure its newly elected President Volodymyr Zelensky into opening an investigation into Burisma, a gas company that had employed Hunter Biden on its board. Hunter’s father, former Vice President Joe Biden, is running for the Democratic Party presidential nomination in 2020. Therefore December 20, 2019

My Aussie Trip Part 2
Sydney opera house Story and Photos by Pat Krause The second week of my Australia trip was another fantastic adventure. We took tours through the rain forest and learned about it and the different trees and plants. The big trees, as they call them, are so big and diverse. We saw vines large enough to hold a human, a.k.a. Tarzan swinging through the trees. We were lucky enough that we were on the only ones on tour, so our guide was able to spend more time with us. We had a lovely picnic lunch. We stopped at a small eatery and tasted many of the local fruits. Our next stop was a swimming hole in the Davis Creek among giant boulders, and our guide swam with us in this beautiful area. The van we were in was able to cross small streams to get to places most people were not allowed. I was amazed at the termite mounds because they are so big and hard as cement. At one stop, he called out, and a turkey came out and ate a piece of a nutty bar right out of our hand and ran away quickly. We found the cheapest and best way to get around was by Uber as they were there to pick us up in minutes. The next stop was in Sydney, and we had chosen not to tour much and do some shopping. We did the Uber ride to Paddys Market in Chinatown, where hundreds of Asian vendors sell almost everything. I knew I would be able to buy more now as we were flying American Airlines home, and we can have two 50 pound suitcases and two carryons. The second day in Sydney, we took a ferry boat to Manley Beach, which was a 20-minute ride one-way. The final night in Sydney was to go to the opera house to see the Nutcracker ballet. What a fantastic building and with excellent acoustics. The opera house is a wellknown landmark around the world because of its design. We rode the Train to Oak flats to visit my daughter’s relatives. Another experience because we had to take all of our luggage with us and it was not easy to find the right Train. The Australian people were always helpful when we needed answers to where we were

Kiama blowhole going and how to get there. Our guides and Uber drivers were also helpful for restaurants and tours to take us, as was our hotel staff when we asked. Our host and hostess in Oak Flatlake live on Lake
Illawarra near the ocean. They have hundreds of birds that they feed on their deck at 5:45 each morning. They put out seven plates of jam, and then In minutes, the dishes are clean, and the hundreds of birds
are gone. Ducks, cockatoos, magpies, lorikeets, Cabrillas and they arrive almost every hour to beg for more food. They drove us down to Kiama to see the blowhole on the ocean where the water comes
out of a hole in the rocks in a large spray that can reach hundreds of feet high. There is a walkway to almost every site in Australia. Australia is beautiful all the way and will remember all of my trip to down Under.

‘Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood’ Now on DVD
Well, dear readers, it’s hard to believe that another year has flown by. Where did it go? Soon this year’s best films will be nominated for Oscar consideration-and don’t be surprised if Quentin Tarantino’s tribute to Hollywood’s past, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” is
one of the lucky contenders. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt as TV star Rick Dalton and his stuntman Cliff Booth. The two not only work together professionally, but they are also best buds off-screen as well. Besides doing Dalton’s stunts, Booth also does all
the star’s driving. Then after hours they go for drinks, eat out or watch TV together. The time frame is 1969, and Dalton’s Hollywood pad is adjacent to Sharon Tate (Margo Robbie) and Roman Polanski’s home on Cielo Drive. Early in the movie Charlie Manson (Damon Herriman)
makes a brief appearance. Later in the story, several members of his Manson clan enter the upscale neighborhood where they have a very close and violent encounter with Dalton, Booth, and Booth’s imposing dog--a real ball biter in every sense of the word. One of the most endearing sequences in the film deals with Dalton talking with a very serious 8-year-old actress (Julia Butters) before their big scene together. She is a little charmer who tells him afterward that he is the best actor she’s ever worked with. This really touches him deeply. In another upbeat segment, Sharon Tate goes to the Bruin Theater in Westwood, where her film “The Wrecking Crew” is playing. As you watch her in the dark, she is obviously having a wonderful time watching herself on the big screen. There is also a fun encounter with Dalton’s agent Marvin Schwarz, played
with gusto by Al Pacino. “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” is not a reenactment of the terrible bloodbath of the actual Manson murders. However, there is still a considerable amount of violence in the final scenes as Manson’s family members come face to face with Dalton, Booth, and Booth’s dog. “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” Andrew Cooper/ Columbia Pictures” is rated R for language, some graphic violence, drug use, and sexual references. Running time: 2 hours, 41 minutes.

As December winds down to a close, there is plenty to see and do. The upbeat, fairytale musical “Frozen” is playing at the Pantages and Matthew Bourne’s ballet “Swan Lake” is gracing the Ahmanson Theatre stage. So have fun with your family at the theater.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource. com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/ TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2019-01339-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. “Made in California” is an international enterprise
By Nancy McLernon Alongside traffic and coffee, news radio is a staple of my morning commute. As I flip through the stations, I’ll sometimes hear a pundit lament that “Nothing is made in America anymore.” In reality, there are nearly 13 million manufacturing workers in the United States, including thousands in California. Some of these folks are employed by U.S.-based firms. Many others work for companies headquartered abroad. These international companies employ more than 769,000 Californians. That includes 199,900 employees in
manufacturing jobs -- or nearly 26 percent of all California jobs created by foreign companies. According to the latest government data, the number of California jobs created by international companies jumped by 29 percent over the past five years. For comparison, the number of private-sector jobs overall in California increased by 19 percent. California isn’t an anomaly. International companies created 62 percent of new manufacturing jobs in the United States over the past five years, according to the latest available government data. More than 1,980 different
international companies employ California workers. Many of them are household names, including Heineken, Honda, and HSBC Bank. International firms pay better. Americans who work for global companies earn 26 percent more compensation than the average worker in the same geographic area, according to a new analysis from the National Bureau of Economic Research. International companies benefit all workers, not just the ones they employ directly. When an international firm sets up a manufacturing plant and creates 1,000 new jobs in America, workers in that
geographic area at domestic firms experience a collective $16 million boost in wages. So for every local job that an international firm creates, the wage pool for employees in the area increases to the tune of $16,000 annually. International companies also benefit from U.S. small businesses. Over the past decade and a half, global companies increased the amount of business they do with U.S. suppliers by nearly 30 percent -- jumping from $1.5 trillion to $2.4 trillion, after adjusting for inflation. In the manufacturing sector, the business between international companies and domestic suppliers rose by nearly 70 percent during that same period. That is more than 14 times greater than the overall growth rate achieved by all U.S. businesses. The economic well-being of local communities depends on international companies and their relationships with suppliers in the United States. For example, Honda operates manufacturing facilities across Ohio that directly employ more than 13,000 Ohioans. It also relies on a network of more than 600 suppliers across the Midwest, almost a third of which are based in the Buckeye State. In fact, Honda
spends $10 billion in Ohio annually to obtain intermediary goods from regional suppliers. Sourcing locally is necessary for reasons beyond just economics -- it allows U.S. small businesses to demonstrate a commitment to social equity and environmental sustainability. For instance, the French food company Danone’s American division, Dannon, is the leading U.S. yogurt producer. Seeking to establish a more sustainably-sourced array of products, Dannon formed partnerships directly with seven family dairy farms and two dairy co-ops across the United States, which now supply all of the milk Dannon uses in its products. In doing so, Danone set high standards for animal welfare and sustainable agricultural practices that must be upheld by their suppliers. As we celebrate local manufacturers statewide, let’s recognize how international companies catalyze regional economic growth -- giving a whole new meaning to “made in California.” Nancy McLernon is the president and CEO of the Organization for International Investment.
