Stanley Kramer gets Star Kat Kramer, Karen Kramer and Janie Hughes. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 421st Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars was dedicated on Dec. 9th for Filmmaker, Director, Producer, Screenwriter, Stanley Kramer. Kramer was acclaimed as a maverick in the films he made. His films have garnered 85 Oscar Nominations from just 35 movies. His films have become legends in the film industry as they are still relevant in content

and can be watched over and over again by all ages of people. His wife of 35 years, Karen Kramer was an actress in her own right and his daughter Karen Kramer, who also follows in her father’s footsteps, were on hand for the dedication. Kramer had so many hit movies, High Noon, Mutiny on the Bounty, Champion and The Man Who Came to Dinner that turned 60 years old are

classics. Kramer was awarded a myriad of worldwide awards, too many to account here. One of his famous movies, The Mad Mad Mad Mad World was partly filmed here in the Valley and a lot in Palm Springs. Kramer lived here for a while and spent a lot of time in the Desert to relax. His movie, The Defiant Ones, was shown later in the evening at the Camelot Theatre.

There was a book signing the movie. Jennifer Frost wrote a book about Stanley Kramer, Producer of Controversy. Many of the movie stars that had roles in his films went on to win Oscars for their performances. Stanley Kramer passed away in 2001. People still say they need more directors with his talent and his courage to take risks and produce films that make people think.

Karen Kramer spoke to the crowd about her husband who passed away several years ago and said this Star was a long time coming. Karen has since kept his memory alive with many philanthropic efforts in his name. She read letters from some very famous people like Oliver Stone, Sidney Poitier, Sharon Stone, Beau Continues on Page 3

Palm Springs Gang Sweep Leads to Arrests, Drug Seizures KMIR News Staff Palm Springs, CA Members of a Palm Springs gang allegedly involved in local drug sales were arrested today during a series of early morning raids conducted by the District Attorney’s Office’s Gang Impact Team. Starting around 5 a.m., officers made arrests and raided homes occupied by members of the Gateway Posse Crips, which prosecutors say has been involved in homicides, narcotics sales and a variety of other crimes since the gang’s inception in 1988. Dubbed Operation Gatekeeper II, the sweep resulted in seven arrests and the seizures of a handgun, as well as heroin, methamphetamine and ecstasy. Eight others with outstanding warrants involving

drug sales were still being sought, according to the District Attorney’s Office. The raid, in which officers made undercover purchases of cocaine, crack, methamphetamine and ecstasy from suspected gang members, was the culmination of a four-month investigation into the Crips. “Our Gang Impact Team continues to expand across the county,’’ District Attorney Mike Hestrin said. “Today’s operation is another example of the outstanding work they do going after the criminal street gangs that are responsible for so much of our crime.’’ Operation Gatekeeper II was so named following a similar raid conducted against the gang in 2009, which resulted in 17 arrests and the recovery of 37 firearms, DA’s

spokesman John Hall said. Both operations were conducted by the DA’s Gang Impact Team, which includes a member of the Palm Springs Police Department, as well as officers from several other federal and local law enforcement agencies. Most recently, the

Gang Impact Team arrested more than 80 people and seized more than 100 firearms across two operations conducted in Desert Hot Springs and Hemet. Palm Springs police Chief Bryan Reyes said: “The Gang Impact Team is extremely effective throughout our county

and I am fortunate to have a member of the Palm Springs Police Department on the team. Through shared resources and a team approach, the community of Palm Springs and Riverside County will benefit from this ongoing approach on crime.’’ Source: KMIR

House passes GOP tax bill, sending it to Senate

By Desert Star Staff The House has passed a tax bill that will afford permanent breaks to corporations, temporary respite to individuals, and repeals the Affordable Care Act mandate. The measure is on track to become law before Friday’s deadline. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) will now be sent to the Senate. If approved, it will be ready for President Donald Trump to sign Friday, representing the first tax overhaul since 1986.

Lawmakers are rushing to pass the bill before the self-imposed deadline of the end of 2017. The final tally was 227 votes in favor and 203 opposed, with 12 Republicans joining the Democrats in opposing the bill and two Democrats not voting. Protesters briefly interrupted the proceedings, chanting “kill the bill!” right before Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) made his speech on the House floor. They were

removed from the gallery by the sergeant-at-arms. The biggest beneficiaries of the new tax plan are corporations, whose tax rate will decrease from 35 percent to 21 percent. The bill also repeals the corporate alternative minimum tax which ensured that companies that turn a profit pay at least some federal taxes. So-called pass-through businesses – companies organized as S-corporations, Limited liability corporations (LLC), sole proprietorships December 22, 2017

and partnerships, will be taxed at the individual rate of 20 percent rather than at the corporate tax rate. On the individual end, Americans will be taxed within seven different brackets: Zero, 10, 12, 22, 24, 32, 35 and 37 percent. High-income Americans will continue to pay 39.6 percent income tax. Unlike the corporate tax cuts, individual tax provisions will return to their current rates in ten years, unless extended by Congress. The tax bill will also eliminate the penalty for not purchasing health insurance as articulated in the Affordable Care Act – better known as Obamacare. GOP lawmakers failed to repeal Obamacare earlier this year. Democrats say the move will raise premiums and make millions of Americans lose health insurance as a result. The proposal would also allow drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the largest area of pristine wilderness in the US which oil and gas companies have long sought to drill. Millions of victims of wildfires, hurricanes and floods that devastated the country would have one less resource as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act would

eliminate a deduction for uninsured casualty losses from natural disasters. GOP holdouts, Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine), Mike Lee (R-Utah), and Marco Rubio (R-Florida) announced they will vote in favor, after securing concessions from fellow lawmakers. Senator Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) is the lone holdout, though his opposition is not expected to prevent the passage of the proposed legislation in the Senate. “Just finished reading the final Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. It will cut taxes for working Utah families. I will proudly vote for it,” Lee wrote. Speaker Ryan was not concerned about the bill’s unpopularity. The “mudfest” on television makes it unpopular, he said, but when people see the tax plan’s results, it will gain public support. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) has opposed the bill, saying it represented a giveaway to corporations without benefiting the majority of Americans. “This is a tax bill written for massive corporations and wealthy Republican campaign contributors, not for the average American. It must be defeated.”

Bitcoin crashes 15% as investors pour money into bitcoin cash By Desert Star Staff The bitcoin sell-off continued on Wednesday after the leading platform for buying and selling the cryptocurrency, Coinbase, announced it was rolling out support for rival bitcoin cash. “Sends and receives are available immediately. Buys and sells will be available to all customers once there is sufficient liquidity on GDAX. We anticipate that this will take a few hours,” the exchange announced in a blog post on Tuesday. Coinbase said in an updated tweet that buying and selling would likely not be available until Wednesday. Bitcoin cash trading has also been suspended on GDAX

until noon on Wednesday. The news sent the value of bitcoin cash soaring more than 50 percent to $3,800 per coin. It then retreated to $3,549 per coin as of 7:20 GMT. The original bitcoin, which was trading at more than $19,000 on Tuesday, slid to $16,353 in less than 24 hours. Bitcoin cash split off from bitcoin on August 1 after a group of developers decided to try to improve transaction speeds and costs. The majority of those who supported the conventional bitcoin failed to reach an agreement this fall on their own upgrade proposal – SegWit2x. At first, the split did not impact the price of bitcoin. The newly minted bitcoin cash became worth around $600 per token. However, since August, the value of all bitcoin cash in circulation has soared from about $10 billion to $60 billion. Bitcoin payment processor BitPay and major

cryptocurrency storage company Blockchain recently said they would support bitcoin cash. The community of bitcoin supporters have also split into rival camps, with some shifting to bitcoin cash. The co-founder of Bitcoin.

com, Emil Oldenburg, recently criticized the cryptocurrency as the “most risky investment you can make,” after he transferred his investment to bitcoin cash. He has encouraged investors to sell the “high risk”bitcoin, calling bitcoin cash “the future.” “I’ve actually sold all my

bitcoins recently and switched to bitcoin cash,” Oldenburg said. “As soon as people realise that this is how it works, [they] will start selling.” Bitcoin managed to recover some of its losses on Wednesday, trading just below $18,000 as of 13:00 GMT.

Bridges, Carl Reiner and more. Karen Kramer noted it was Kirk Douglas’s 101st birthday and also 60 years since The Man Who Came To Dinner was released to the public. Kramer was a great storyteller about activism and Social Justice. Several speakers told about his films that dealt with Racial Equality and personal problems of people in everyday life. His films changed the world in the way people think and react. That is why they dubbed him a Maverick Film Maker. He dealt with subject’s others did not want to make films about. He took risks that changed so much. He felt a great responsibility at being a filmmaker and the power it has.

Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Jewish Family Services of the Desert held its Patron Party at the Tamarisk Ridge in Rancho Mirage on December 11th. The event was held at the beautiful private home of Keith Rudman and Marnie Kalmin. It was a cocktail supper that started at 6:00 pm. The event co-chairs were Audrey Bernstein, Joan Kerns, Gail Scadron and Aviva Snow. This was their 15th

annual Patron Party. Guests were treated to beautiful music by the piano playing of Paul Cracchiolo who said the sound from the Grand Piano was fantastic. The house was large enough to accommodate this large crowd. Avava Snow spoke about how so many board members were present and thanked all for their generosity and support. She asked for a round of

applause for the co-chairs as they did a fantastic job on this party. Maureen Forman, the Executive Director, spoke about how they assist 500 seniors to help them stay in their own homes. JFS helps with rent, utilities, food, education and support groups. They help everyone regardless of their religion, color or sexuality. They send kids to camp. They help the homeless with toiletries and supplies

which is much needed by them. JFS provides services to over 2000 people a year. Barbara and Jerry Keller spoke to the crowd and announced that on January 10th they would be donating 10% of all sales to JFS from the Agua Bistro Restaurant. Michael Childers talked about the upcoming One Night Only event at the McCallum Theatre. They hope to fill the 1,150 seats again this

year. They are bringing in 25 stars from New York to perform; some are coming back still this year. A few are Fan favorites that will play again, and new performers will make new fans. This is always a significant benefit for Jewish Family Services of the Desert. The Barry Manilow Gift of Love Concert performed on December 13th and proceeds went to Jewish Family Services of the Desert.

Damned. They have been at the bookstore before for a book signing and have garnered so many local fans. Other fans drive a long distance just to be able to meet the Duo and have a book autographed. The line for getting a book signed was long but it usually doesn’t take long and you are

at the table greeting them. For those unable to get to the store they can pre-order a signed copy of their book. You can even have the signed book mailed to you for a small mailing fee. This couple has written an enormous number of books. Each is an accomplished author and now they have chosen to write

a few books as co-writers to the delight of their fans. Some of the people attending bought several signed copies to give as gifts for a friend or family member. That is a great idea especially at Christmas time when getting someone something special is hard to do. The staff at the bookstore were

busy selling books to those that didn’t buy one earlier. Many people buy the book early so they can stay in line for the autograph. Anne and Christopher always took time to have a photo taken with the person whose book they just autographed.

World’s First Supersonic Business Jet

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, - Two leaders in supersonic technology, Aerion and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today to define a formal and gated process to explore the feasibility of a joint development of the world’s first supersonic business jet, the Aerion AS2. Over the next 12 months, the companies will work together to develop a framework on all phases of the program, including engineering, certification and production. Aerion Chairman Robert M. Bass stated, “This relationship is absolutely key to creating a supersonic renaissance. When it comes to supersonic know-how, Lockheed Martin’s capabilities are well known, and, in fact, legendary. We share with Lockheed Martin a commitment to the long-term development of efficient civil supersonic aircraft.” “We are excited to work with Aerion on their development

of the next-generation, efficient supersonic jet that will potentially serve as a platform for pioneering future supersonic aircraft,” said Orlando Carvalho, Executive Vice President, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. The MOU is the result of extensive discussions between Aerion and Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works®Advanced Development Programs team. For close to 75 years, Skunk Works has existed to create revolutionary aircraft that push the boundaries of what is possible. Lockheed Martin, known for developing the world’s leading supersonic combat aircraft, the F-16, the F-35, and F-22, as well as the Mach 3+ SR-71 reconnaissance aircraft, is committed to fostering new innovations and developing supersonic technologies with civil and commercial applications. “Following our initial review of Aerion’s aerodynamic

technology, our conclusion is that the Aerion AS2 concept warrants the further investment of our time and resources,” said Carvalho. “We are committed to remaining on the cutting edge of aerospace technology and are excited to examine the contribution we might make to working with Aerion on making aviation history.” During the last two and a half years, Aerion advanced

the aerodynamics and structural design of the AS2 through a previous engineering collaboration agreement with Airbus. Through that effort, the two companies developed a preliminary design of wing and airframe structures, systems layout, and preliminary concepts for a fly-by-wire flight control system. “We are grateful for Airbus’ contribution to the program,”

said Brian Barents, Aerion Executive Chairman. “We could not have moved the program to this stage without their support.” In May 2017, GE Aviation announced an agreement with Aerion to define a supersonic engine for the AS2. The latest announcement with Lockheed Martin further positions Aerion as the leader in the nascent sector of civil supersonic aviation.

Former Beaumont Officials Plead Guilty to Engaging in Fraud

KMIR News Staff Beaumont, CA - Four former Beaumont city officials pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony charges stemming from a yearlong investigation into corruption involving misuse of tens of millions of dollars in public funds and other acts of fraud, prompting a judge to immediately sentence each man to varying lengths of home detention and order payment of penalties ranging from $100,000 to $4 million. William Kevin Aylward, 54, of Cherry Valley, David William Dillon, 64, of Temecula, Ernest Alois Egger, 61, of Mendocino, and Alan Charles Kapanicas, 65, of Palm Desert admitted wrongdoing under a plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. Superior Court Judge Mac Fisher certified the terms and imposed the sentences stipulated by the prosecution and defense. “This is an important step in bringing justice to the

people of Beaumont,’’ District Attorney Mike Hestrin said. “The fact that all these pleas also involve more than $11 million in restitution to the city, to be paid forthwith from the assets previously frozen by the D.A.’s Office, is significant. The success of this prosecution would not have been possible without the cooperation of the city of Beaumont and the Western Riverside Council of Governments.’’ With two other disgraced officials -- former police Chief Frank Coe, 53, and former public works Director Deepak Moorjani, 71 -- pleading guilty in October, only one defendant remains to be prosecuted. A Feb. 22 preliminary hearing is scheduled for ex-City Attorney Joseph Sandy Aklufi, 71, at the Riverside Hall of Justice. He’s free on a $500,000 bond. Aylward, former finance director for Beaumont, pleaded guilty to embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds. He was sentenced to one year of home confinement

with an electronic monitoring device, three years’ probation and ordered to pay $100,000 in restitution. Dillon, former economic development director, pleaded guilty to conflict of interest and embezzlement of public funds. He was also ordered to serve a year of home detention and three years’ probation -- with a requirement to pay $4 million back to the city. Egger, former planning director, pleaded guilty to conflict of interest and embezzlement of public funds. He will serve the same confinement and probation terms as his co-defendants, with an obligation to pay $3 million in restitution. Kapanicas, former city manager, pleaded guilty to embezzlement of municipal funds and misappropriation of public funds and will also serve a year of home detention and three years’ probation. Fisher ordered him to pay $1 million in restitution. On Oct. 20, Moorjani

admitted one count of financial conflict of interest and was sentenced to three years’ probation and ordered to repay the city $3 million. That same week, Coe admitted a misdemeanor charge of conspiracy to commit grand theft and was sentenced to three years’ probation and 200 hours of community service. He had already repaid $50,000 in interest-free loans that were arranged for him while he was serving as the chief. All of the defendants were arrested in May 2016, following a yearlong investigation by the District Attorney’s Office and FBI. Moorjani was the operator of Urban Logic Consultants, which contracted with Beaumont for more than 20 years to provide a range of governmental services. The prosecution contended that Moorjani and his colleagues at ULC, Dillon and Egger, carried out city business with the specific intent of profiting from it personally. Prosecutors alleged the defendants engaged in schemes using complex arrangements tied to bond sales and development fees. Coe was awarded interestfree loans straight out of the treasury that were not vetted by the Beaumont City Council. Hestrin said the ULC executives pulled levers that ultimately resulted in losses totaling $42.96 million. Moorjani, Dillon and Egger were handling bond sales for the city, plowing revenue from the issuances back into ULC, which is no longer in operation. The ULC managers, along with Aylward, Aklufi and Kapanicas, were also

responsible for overseeing Transportation Uniform Mitigation Fee accounts. TUMFs are collected from developers and are assigned to the Western Riverside Council of Governments, which utilizes the money for regionwide transportation projects. It’s alleged that from 2003 to 2014, $36.6 million in TUMF revenue was collected in Beaumont but not released to WRCOG. Instead, the funds were retained for local projects that the six men had a stake in, according to prosecutors. Aylward and Kapanicas were instrumental in arranging equipment purchases for Beaumont Electric. Between 2009 and 2015, $6.2 million in city funds were supplied to the private company, without prior authorization from the council. The scheme further involved allowing Beaumont Electric to use the city’s reseller’s permit, sparing it from having to pay sales taxes to the state Board of Equalization, as detailed in an audit of the city’s finances ordered in 2015 by state Controller Betty Yee. The U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission initiated its own probe, and in August announced a settlement with Kapanicas for securities violations arising from his time overseeing the Beaumont Financing Authority. The SEC said that Kapanicas failed to file disclosures and adhere to other fiduciary duties in arranging bond sales in support of a community facilities district between 2003 and 2013. He agreed to pay a $37,500 penalty without admitting anything to SEC attorneys. Source: KMIR

Saudi prince revealed as owner of ‘world’s most expensive home’

By Desert Star Staff The Saudi crown prince who led a recent royal crackdown on corruption and lavish spending has reportedly been revealed as the buyer of “the world’s most expensive home.” Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman was identified as the owner of the 50,000sq ft (4,645 sq m) Chateau Louis XIV following a report by the New York Times Saturday. The paper found that the heir to the Saudi throne bought the $300 million property in 2015 – one

of a number of symbols of the royal’s largesse along with a $500 million yacht and a $450 million painting by Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci. The prince was said to have acquired the palace through a number of shell companies in France and Luxembourg that are all owned by Eight Investment Company, a Saudi firm run by his own personal foundation. The claims in the report were based on information from the Paradise Papers, a trove of more than 13 million

By Desert Star Staff LINCOLN, Neb. -- The shopping, decorations, baking and parties during the holiday season can leave some folks feeling more misery than merriment. Dr. Diane Marti, public education coordinator at the Nebraska Psychological Association, said the holiday blues are not uncommon. And those who already are experiencing stress and sadness in other areas of their lives are especially vulnerable. She explained that situations such as financial troubles, broken families or the loss of a loved one are among the issues that can make the chaos of the holiday season much more difficult to manage. “There’s a lot of life conditions that trigger blues, because it reminds them that they aren’t that happy family that they see on commercials, or they don’t have any money to buy gifts for their children,” Marti said. She recommends putting yourself first, making sure to get plenty of sleep and physical activity. She also suggests discussing your troubles with a trusted friend or family member. If negative feelings persist, seek a trained counselor or psychiatrist

who can offer strategies to develop healthy behaviors and address emotional issues. Marti said striving for the perfect holiday can leave people feeling overburdened and defeated. So she suggests taking a step back and looking at your to-do list. “Maybe you have expectations that might be really high,” she said. “So maybe looking at ‘Is this realistic, goals that I can accomplish by Christmas? Or maybe I can just do part of it.’” She said helping those in need is a sure-fire way to shift the focus back to what really matters. “Helping others or volunteering; giving to others and not focusing on what you don’t have. Typically that can help get people through,” Marti said. “But if it doesn’t, you know, then you’re looking at ‘Well, maybe I need to get evaluated.’” Marti noted there is a difference between the holiday blues, which are often temporary and go away once the season ends, and more serious conditions such as depression, seasonal affective disorder and anxiety disorders. documents relating to offshore investments that were leaked to an alliance of news media. The revelations seem particularly ironic in Mohammad bin Salman’s case, as he has been leading a campaign promoting austerity and railing against self-enrichment in the oil-rich state in recent times. The effort has resulted in the arrest of more than 200 princes, ministers and businessmen and their imprisonment in the Ritz Carlton in Riyadh. The Kingdom’s deficit

reached $79 billion last year. To cut the deficit, Riyadh has tried to implement fiscal measures, including spending cuts, raising taxes, bond sales and even raised the prospect of a floating a part of its oil monopoly Armco on the stock exchange. Salman’s 620-acre palace was built in 2009 in Louveciennes, west of Paris, after developer Emad Khashoggi, the nephew of a billionaire arms dealer, bulldozed a 19th-century castle to make way for his

vision of a Versaille-style palace. The home, which features a wine cellar, movie theatre and a moat with transparent underwater chamber, is entirely modern, with fountains, lights and air conditioning all remotely controlled via iPhone. There are also 10 bedroom suites in the house, indoor and outdoor pools, a squash court, two ballrooms and a nightclub. Fortune magazine described the property as “the world’s most expensive” in a feature piece in December 2015.
