‘STAR WARS: The Force Awakens’ By Theda Kleinhans Reichman Thirty eight years ago, in 1977, George Lucas transported us all to a Galaxy far, far away inhabited by Jedi knights, Obi wan Kanobi, Yoda, the formidable force of evil Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, his sister Princess Leia and the lovable Han Solo who captivated us with his bravado and sense of humor. To date there have been six films celebrating the strong

forces of Good versus Evil and now, after a ten year wait, “Star Wars” returns to the big screen. The long awaited sequel, “The Force Awakens,” directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, reunites many of our old galaxy friends with a new generation of characters who will lead this beloved franchise into the future. Abrams was only 11 years old when he saw the first “Star Wars” film, but even at that

tender age, he was struck by the film’s powerful messages. For him then, and now, the Star Wars saga was about love and the power of good versus evil. According to Abrams, “The heart and soul of each film is the love of family, related or not. It is also about discovery, alliances, loyalty and friendship” He continued, “The heart of Star Wars is not just about action, it’s not just about core

By Desert Star Staff Dust off the grill and get those favorite barbecue recipes ready - it’s tailgating time! Whether watching at home or at the stadium, big games provide ample opportunities for entertaining and nothing brings friends together like grilled dishes, flavorful sides and delicious drinks. For many, watching the game is only half the experience. The tailgate is the main event and the fun and rivalry it brings is just as important as watching the game. Just as players work hard to prepare football formations,

fans are just as focused on preparations for the big party. When it comes to planning your tailgate menu, grilled fare is always a winning choice. While beer has historically reigned supreme as the game day beverage pairing, more fans are looking to mix things up. Here are some tailgate pairings sure to score big with guests at your next game day celebration: * Beef: Classic selections such as juicy ribs and hamburgers are common fixtures on many tailgating menus. Try creating your own marinades with ingredients like honey, sweet chili December 25, 2015

sauce, ground ginger or Creole seasoning. Put a personal spin on classic hamburgers by serving them with interesting toppings like cherry chutney, smoky chili or creamy beer cheese. For side options, consider slow-cooked baked beans, jalapeno cornbread muffins or crunchy slaw tossed with a fresh lemon dressing. Bring out the richness of red meats with a glass of Yellow Tail Big Bold Red, which serves up flavors of dark fruits, a hint of spice and bold oak notes. * Chicken: Whether its wings or sandwiches, chicken is typically on the game day

menu, but that doesn’t have to mean boring. Add some extra zing to everyone’s favorite white meat with a spicy curry rub or Asian-inspired marinade blend. Serve these dishes with a side of cucumber or cold pasta tossed with roasted red pepper, mozzarella and cherry tomatoes. Not sure of a beverage selection? Pair your poultry with a sweet moscato or bottled sangria. * Seafood: Some fans may need a break from the fried foods that grace the tailgate spread. Give guests the option of lighter fare with grilled seafood entrees such as salmon filets with avocado relish or grilled tequila-lime shrimp skewers. As a side, pair your favorite seafood selections with easy-to-grill veggies like corn, zucchini and yellow squash. Refresh your palate with a glass of crisp white wine such as Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio, which features refreshing green apple and pear flavors. Whether celebrating at home or away, remember you can still impress your tailgating teammates with a championship-worthy spread. Leave the competition in the dust by putting your own spin on some grilled favorites, and you’re sure to be the game day MVP. For more entertaining ideas, visit yellowtailwine.com. Family Features

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Pegasus Therapeutic Riding presented its 21st annual Riders Awards Luncheon on Sunday Dec. 13th at the Renaissance Esmeralda Emerald Ballroom. It took the large ballroom to accommodate the over 700 people attending. This is the largest gathering of people at the awards luncheon. They broke records in attendance and monies raised. Vendors selling items made by the clients of Pegasus were a big hit. Regina McGrath had a booth, Reggies Rack, selling many of her jewelry at an inexpensive price and a few designer clothes and all money raised went to Pegasus. What a novel idea and she was very busy selling. Dan McGrath was the emcee and Alicia Gomez translated everything into Spanish for those attending. The stage was set with a beautiful Christmas tree and a ramp for those clients in wheelchairs to come on stage to get their medal. Event ChairChase Berke and Volunteers went to the stage to hand out medals and help those in need to get on stage. Travis wrote his own thank you letter to Pegasus saying he was so shy and felt so alone until he became part of the Pegasus family. He was so thrilled to get his medal that he found 3 pretty girls in reindeer hats to show his medal. The clients, families and caregivers found the dance floor with a DJ Michael Apitinelli playing songs like the Macarema, YMCA and Hokey Pokey to dance to. It is so heart warming to see this clients dance away happily. Mothers brought their kids to dance with, some in wheelchairs. Parents, caregivers and clients were smiling and several servicemen from 29 Palms Marine Base gave dancing demonstrations for the kids to follow. A Spanish dancer and another duo gave dancing entertainment during the luncheon and of course, Santa was on hand for the little ones. Liz Fasek-Kane donated $5,000 to Pegasus with board

FILM ‘STAR WARS: The Force Awakens’ BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

Continued from Page 1 They too want to find Skywalker. In the bloody battle that follows, Poe is captured and taken to the planet ruled by the First Order, which has replaced the evil Empire of the past. Fortunately for the Resistance forces, Poe is able to place the map inside his adorable roly-poly droid, BB-8. He tells the frantic little droid to hide, assuring BB-8 that he will eventually return. In the meantime, the droid must stay out of trouble. In his screenplay, co-written with Lawrence Kasdan (“The Return of the Jedi”) Abrams introduces us to the feisty, very capable female heroine, Rey (British actress Daisy Ridley), a Jakku scavenger who earns money by selling scrap metal. She is befriended by Finn (John Boyega), a Storm Trooper with a conscience who has deserted

his post in order to lead a more humane life. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o provides the voice for the 1,000 year old Maz Kanada who runs a Cantina similar to the one in the first Star Wars film. The evil First Order leader Snoke is portrayed by Andy Serkis. The new characters are inter-mixed throughput the film with heroes from the past like Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, who has a pivotal role. He is joined by his sidekick Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill in cameo roles. “The Force Awakens,” filmed on location in the desert sands of Abu Dhabi and the lush forests of Northern Ireland, give the film a sense of authenticity far better that CGI backgrounds. And what would a Star Wars film be like without a score composed by the masterful John Williams. His background music adds to the excitement of each and every scene.

The film is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence.

Create New Traditions Using Technology

By Desert Star Staff The winter months come with many gifts to wrap and unwrap, parties to plan, familystyle meals to whip up -- the list goes on. Now more than ever, technology can help us get creative with how to make time with family more meaningful, and then help us capture all the fun so the memories last far longer than just a moment. Here’s how to get started. Make Things to Share: Interactive computers such as Sprout by HP are recreating what it means to make things by merging the physical and www.desertstarweekly.com

digital worlds. Sprout is what HP calls an Immersive Computer; it comes with a touch screen, touch mat, overhead projector, HD camera and 3D scanner. With Sprout, you can grab holiday-inspired items -- like holiday wreaths or jingle bells -- and easily scan them into the device. There are several different free apps available that can help you create, learn, interact and share. Do-It-Yourself Decorating: If you’re in the mood to get crafty with the family, you can make non-traditional items such as garlands out of leftover sprinkles

from holiday baking. JoJotastic. com blogger, Joanna Hawley, doesn’t throw away leftover ingredients; instead she recycles them for a decorating project. Take her lead by throwing some sprinkles on the touch mat to scan, print and cut the images into your favorite shape. Then, tie each piece to ribbon and voila, festive garlands to hang on the wall for any holiday party! Beat Holiday Boredom: Spending time at home can be a nostalgic, cheerful experience. But between baking pumpkin muffins and holiday shopping, there are bound to be stretches December 25, 2015

of free time -- especially for the kids. Borrow a few tips from LunchboxDad.com blogger, Beau Coffron, who uses creative holiday boredom busters to keep the kids busy! Like Beau and his family, you can explore apps like Crayola DJ to brighten up a chilly winter day. The kids will love interacting with the projected turnstiles on the touch mat to show off their musical skills. Direct a Family Video: Give the traditional family video a new twist by recording quirky moments and piecing them together on apps like Video Capture. Lunchbox Dad likes the

eye-catching DreamWorks Story Producer app that lets you create and direct your own How to Train Your Dragon animated film. You can even choose the difficulty level. Try challenging the family to see who can get the fastest time! Don’t Forget To Share: When used imaginatively, technology can unite the family to inspire new, meaningful traditions. Provocative and intriguing drama tests belief tenets

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic As the old saying goes, two subjects considered to be off-limits for discussion by polite people and friends at social gatherings or at dinner parties, are the prickly subjects of religion and politics. But what if the highlycharged subject of religious beliefs and tenets is introduced by none other than the founding pastor of a highly visible megachurch during Sunday services, who claims to have experienced a religious epiphany when it comes to certain passages in Biblical scripture? If that’s the case, then you must have been sitting in the audience watching a performance of the Mark Taper Forum’s (MTF) provocative, new, religious shoutout play “The Christians”, smartly written by Lucas Hnath and deftly staged by award-wining director Les Waters. Waters also staged

two earlier productions for Center Theatre Group. “Marjorie Prime” at the (MTF) in 2014 and “Girlfriend” at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in July of this year. “The Christians” revolve around a charismatic and highly successful Pastor Paul (an absolutely mesmerizing Andrew Garman) of a Christian congregation who suddenly announces during his Sunday homily that he has had a change of heart concerning the Bible’s representation of the place known as “Hell”. In fact, he claims there is no such place. This stunning declaration throws the church and its followers into a tizzy. Sides are taken. Should the church elders, led by Elder Jay (Philip Kerr) ask Pastor Paul to leave? What for instance, is the position of the associate pastor Joshua (sensitively and intelligently played by Larry Powell)? Joshua sadly disagrees with Pastor Paul’s position. Even Pastor Paul’s loyal wife Elizabeth (nicely underplayed by Linda Powell) waivers on

Scott Anthony in “The Christians” at the Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum. Photo by Craig Schwartz

which side of this explosive and dividing religious issue she will come down on. Will she support her husband’s new position? Or will she stand with the majority of the congregants? Everyone is faced with being on the horns of a dilemma. Hobson’s choices are rampant in the church. Choir congregant Jenny (earnestly played by Emily Donahoe) is a young divorced mother who is searching for guidance and answers from Pastor Paul on how to explain to her young son all this turmoil voiced by the congregation. Her character acts as sort of a Greek chorus where every question that Jenny asks, is followed by a response from Paul, which then leads to new and more probing questions from Jenny. When Paul realizes he cannot give her definitive answers to her questions anymore, their discussion may be over but the basic core issue still remains unresolved. At this point Jenny silently leaves the stage, signaling the exit of congregants leaving Pastor Paul’s church to Join Pastor Joshua in his new church. The play as written by Hnath is a serious investigation into the nature of faith. It’s also clever in how it challenges some Protestant core beliefs in the Bible without offending too many believers. Any kind of change is always troubling even disturbing when

deviations occur that threaten the status quo. Just ask Martin Luther and Pope Leo X about change and its after-shocks. Their little ecclesiastical ‘dustup’ produced the Protestant Reformation in 1517. The staging of the play itself, by Waters, becomes a ‘character’ in the production, thanks to Scenic Designer Dane Lafferty’s creation of an onstage church complete with choir singers drawn from local Los Angeles churches and choirs. They begin each performance with rousing gospel music conducted by Scott Anthony, which lends an air of authenticity to the story and the action that takes place on stage. If one wants to know how convincing the setting is and the services being conducted in the faux on-stage church, at the point where Pastor Paul says to the congregants “Let us pray”, heads in the audience lowered as if to join in the prayers with the actors. Now that’s really being caught up in the moment with the onstage performers. All of the verisimilitude of “The Christians” is accomplished without any of the actors raising their voices when stating their feelings or positions, except for a two minute scene between Pastor Paul and his wife Elizabeth near the end of the play. This is just good, old fashioned inspired direction on the part of

director Waters who wonderfully orchestrates the all the voices and their pacing. The power of the play comes from the writing and the actors. It’s an interesting intellectual think piece that explores the complexities of religion, performed by a stellar cast of six actors and a choir of twenty on-stage singers that are drawn from a pool of forty-four who rotate their performances. Playwright Hnath explains in program notes what he’s getting at in the play. “It’s true that there is no resolution in the play”, he says, adding “Here’s something I believe: a church is a place where people go to see something that is very difficult to see.” It’s a place where the invisible is – at least for a moment – made visible.” I would categorize that play synopsis in one word - Faith. Hnath asks true believers to process this intellectual religious dichotomy of information without waiting for the ‘Godot moment’, so to speak, saying that this is why there is no resolution to his play. That may be the case but it sure is a provocative and entertaining journey while we’re observing everything from the audiences’ point of view. This splendid production is performed without an intermission and runs at the Mark Taper Forum through January 10, 2016.

Make Your Holidays Merry with These Fireplace Tips

By Desert Star Staff Fireplaces mean warmth, comfort and ambiance -- and there’s no better time of year to enjoy one than when loved ones are gathered together for the holidays. with care sound nice, but should be avoided in practice -- there are plenty of safe alternatives for this traditional holiday display, such as the banister or the windows. Don’t be shy about using your fireplace while you have holiday visitors. Just be sure guests know that it can be very hot during and after use, and remember that children and pets should always be supervised. Keep the remote control (if your unit has one) out of reach. Factory-provided safety screens, aftermarket freestanding screens, and barriers help reduce

burn risk, as they prevent skin from coming into direct contact with hot glass. You can learn more about fireplace safety and request a safety barrier at heatilator.com/Fireplace-Safety. aspx. What to Know: A new fireplace can be the perfect gift you give yourself this season, and smart technologies are making them more versatile than ever before. Different needs will guide your choice. Free online resources, available at heatilator.com, can help you determine what fuel choice and style is right for your home -- whether you are looking for a modern or traditional design in a wood-burning, gas, or electric fireplace. Deck the Mantel: The fireplace can be one of the top areas of the home to showcase your decorating skills -- especially

during the holiday season. Save your most treasured trimmings for the mantel. Display frames filled with holiday photos of family and friends, scented candles, garlands with dried berries, flowers and festive ribbons and bowls of seasonal fruit.
