Into The Wild with Jack Hanna comes to the McCallum Theatre on January 18, 2015 By Desert Star Staff Jack Hanna returns to the McCallum Theatre with his popular show “Into the Wild • Live!” on Sunday, January 18, at 3:00pm. Jungle Jack’s live show features many of his favorite animal friends as well as fascinating and humorous stories and footage from his

adventures around the world. Through the jungles of Rwanda to the savannahs of Australia, Jack Hanna has explored the corners of the globe as one of the world’s most visible and respected animal ambassadors. As the director emeritus of the famed Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Jack’s animal

adventures range from brushing a hippo’s teeth to eating with wombats. Recognized around the country as America’s favorite zookeeper, Jack took his infectious energy to the airwaves to create three of his own nationally syndicated television programs. He was the host of the

Highway Heroes

syndicated television show “Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures” from 1993 to 2008, “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild” (20092010) and “Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown” since 2011. Jack also contributes commentary as an animal expert on local and national news programs, and has done numerous guest spots

on other shows including “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “The Talk,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Larry King Live,” “Nancy Grace,” and “Hollywood Squares.” Jack and his TV crew have had the privilege to travel to Continues on Page 5

Fundraiser for Morongo Fire Department at The Body Deli By Pamela Price A state-of-the-art fire truck will be serving the needs of the Morongo Valley Fire Department, which covers Highway 62 through Morongo, if David Parker and Margaret Skarin, co-founders of The Body Deli in Palm Springs and Palm Desert have their way. It all started when Parker became aware of the alarming situation along this scenic but dangerous stretch of highway, which is sadly under funded. “When I realized the desperate need of the Morongo Valley Fire

Department, I realized it was everyone’s issue. The urgency of acquiring a modern fire truck was serious and funds that need to cover a new fire truck can cost as much as $400,000. I wanted to be among the first to raise awareness.” Jock Johnson, Fire Chief, whose firefighting career that spans 24 years, calls his department one of the most challenging he has encountered due to highway danger, extreme fire hazard and insufficient funding. Parker and Skarin coincidentally just

opened their newest Body Deli store on El Paseo in Palm Desert. Along with Fire Chief Johnson, they combined forces to sponsor a lively “Meet the heroes” fundraising event at the store on December 18, with 25 percent of all proceeds from the event donated to the Highway heroes of the Morongo Valley Fire Department. “The bravery these fire fighters display in their community is extraordinary, between disaster relief, Continues on Page 5

d n E e k v e e nt Sum Up e W THE BUZZ THE CITY’S ULTRA-COOL NEW TROLLEY

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The BUZZ has arrived. Palm Springs launched a celebrity filled evening for the BUZZ inaugural run of the City’s Ultra-Cool brand new trolley that will drive people all along Palm Canyon Drive. The BUZZ will have multiple stops along the way, and pedestrians can catch the BUZZ every 15 minutes in Palm Springs. This fast and free trolley service will run every Thursday through Sunday. It will travel all the way from the Rivera Hotel down to the Smoketree Complex and back. The BUZZ is the latest addition to a thriving, upbeat and ahead of its time City. This is a Measure J project. Palm Springs is a happening city as tourists come from all over the world for all the events that are held in the Coachella Valley. The BUZZ took its first passengers on Dec. 19th. The waiting line was long for those that wanted Carol Channing to be the first to ride this fantastic new trolley. Celebrities filled the seats and christened the four Trolleys in front of hundreds of people wanting to be part of this new venture. Food and refreshments were offered the crowd as they waited. Mayor Steve Pougnet spoke to the crowd and Jack Jones sang a song with new words written for the occasion. The group got together to cut the ceremonial ribbon. The celebrities christened each new trolley with a bottle of Champagne. Celebrities included the famous Carol Channing, Lily Tomlin, Suzanne Somers, Nancy Sinatra, Jerry Weintraub, Gavin Macleod along with fan favorite Bella da Ball. Local dignitaries included Harold Matzner, Gloria Greer, Mariah Hanson, Bruce Fessier and of course the Palm Springs Councilmen and Mayor plus many others. Palm Springs did a bang-up job in their efforts to familiarize the public about this new feature.

DESERT ARC CHRISTMAS PARTY

President Richard Balocco, Ernie Rubin and VP Mitch Blumberg

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Desert ARC held its annual Christmas party for 50 adult clients on Dec. 16th. Ernie Rubin and Teddi Rozell put this luncheon together again this year, a labor of love. Each Client was treated to a scrumptious lunch and dessert of a cookie and ice cream. Ernie thanked the Resorter Golf Club for their constant participation in this luncheon. Ernie said she had much-needed help from her friends, “The Elfets” in putting together baskets of goodies and wrapped Christmas presents. The wall was lined with laundry baskets full of treats for the clients and each client also got a Christmas present. Santa arrived after lunch and with the help of the sponsors, a golfing group from Desert Resorter golf club, passed out the Christmas presents to an excited group of adults in the program. They had their photo taken with Santa and then opened the presents with huge smiles on their faces. It tugs at your heart to see how grateful and happy they are with their gifts. The golf group and the Resorter gave each client a new Resorter golf hat to wear. They are already planning next year’s Christmas Party. A two-piece band played and sang Christmas Carols. President Richard Balocco spoke about how Desert ARC helps all their many clients in the Desert. He thanked sponsors like the golf group, Ron and Sherrie Auen, Steve and Darlene Beneto and Ann Carter for their continued support. VP Mitch Blumberg, the staff and everyone present got as much happiness and excitement from this party as the clients.

PLANS TO OPEN AN ARTS AND FAMILY CENTER

By Carolyn Gaines Desert Hot Springs, Futurenomic Resources (FRI) plans to open a brand-new Art and Family Center in Desert Hot Springs to house their latest program the Family Sustainability Program (FSP). Executive Director Sarahyah Yisrael and Music Producer Adon Icon helped secure the fresh facility in the old WIC Office on Palm Drive in the Von’s Shopping Center. Futurenomic Resources is currently located in the Von’s Shopping Center. “The UPS Store has been instrumental in helping Futurenomic to get to this point of expansion. After the DHS Orca Beach Party, we want to continue to embrace the positive change for our city and open our center in the very building the Orcas mural is on. FRI honors the family and arts, so the Orcas celebration can continue.” She says the founder of FRI. “This is another great addition to Desert Hot Springs and there is nothing else like it in the Coachella Valley! This new, state of the art center will not only provide arts programs and a complete industry standard recording studio but other valuable services like quality child care and job opportunities to the community. I am pleased to have helped the City Of Desert Hot Springs undertake this latest improvement project, attracting city officials, leaders and families to our new center, ” said Sarahyah Yisrael, Executive Director of Futurenomic. The Futurenomic Resources Family Center will be open to the public and welcomes children ages 6 months to be 16 years old becoming the only center in Desert Hot Springs to welcome infants. The center will also run an arts program for youth ages 5 through 18. . To make the center opening a success, Futurenomic is asking community support to raise a minimum of $30,000 for state and city licensing, playground equipment, computers, and to bring additional value to the community. May the Spirit of Your Holidays Be Blithe If my mother were still here, I know what I would give her for Christmas—a ticket to see Angela Lansbury in Noel Coward’s frothy comedy romp “Blithe Spirit” currently delighting audiences at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown L.A. Mom, an avid mystery buff, never missed watching Angela on Sunday night in the long-running TV hit ”Murder She Wrote.” She absolutely loved the show and its star, so when my husband and I saw “Blithe

Spirit“ I almost felt that Mom was sitting next to us, enjoying the play right along with us. Thank you, Madame Arcati, aka Angela Lansbury, for conjuring up more than one blithe spirit on opening night... In her films, Lansbury could be an awful person, like the devious, evil mother in “The Manchurian Candidate” or as the house maid in “Gaslight” with Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. These roles earned her Oscar nods, but it was in stage musicals like “Mame” and “Gypsy” that she got the chance to sing and make audiences care about her. And of course we all loved her as Jessica Fletcher in TVs “Murder She Wrote” or in Disney films like “Bed-knobs and Broomsticks” and as the voice of the motherly teapot in “Beauty and the Beast” where she sang “Tale as Old as Time.” She has been a luminous star on TV and the big screen, but with five Tony Awards, it is on stage that she truly shines. Watching her perform, it’s hard to believe that she’s 89 years young and has been acting for 70 years. Wow, people 50 years younger might find it hard to keep up with her. In fact, as Madame Arcati in “Blithe Spirit,” she brought down the house when she danced around the stage before going into her trance. Set designer Simon Higlett also nearly brings down the house before the final curtain. The sophisticated set, coupled with lighting by Mark Johnathan and sound by Ben and Max Ringham, combine to create the flawless setting for a séance that conjures up Charles Condomine’s late wife Elvira (Jemima Rooper), much to his total shock and surprise. Charles Edwards, who plays Lady Edith’s publisher lover in TVs “Downtown Abbey,” is perfect as the dashing writer, Charles Condomine. In fact, every role in the play, from Angela Lansbury as Madame Arcati and Charlotte Parry as Charles’ current wife Ruth to Susan Louise O’Conner as the dotty little housemaid, Edith and Simon Jones and Sandra Shiplely as séance guests Dr. and Mrs. Bradmanm are, as the Brits would say, “Spot on.” While “Blithe Spirit” is a lighthearted, truly amusing romp, one senses an even deeper message at its core, which is, true love is impossible to attain even though everyone seeks to love and be loved in return. According to Barry Day, Editor of “The Letters of Noel Coward,” the gifted playwright was asked, late in life, to sum up, his life in one word. Coward replied, “The answer is Love. To know that you are among people you love and who love you. That has made all

L-R: Susan Louise O’Connor (standing), Sandra Shipley, Charles Edwards, Angela Lansbury, Charlotte Parry and Simon Jones in the North American tour of Noël Coward’s “Blithe Spirit” Photo by Joan Marcus the successes wonderful—much more wonderful than they’d have been anyway. And that’s it, really.” “Blithe Spirit,” at the Ahmanson Theatre, 135 N. Grand Ave., downtown LA. through Jan. 18. For tickets and info call (213) 972-4400 or online at www. centertheatregroup.org.

•••••••••••••• On January 4, 2015, you don’t have to go to Vienna; Vienna will come to you with the beautiful, tuneful New Year’s Concert, “Salute to Vienna” at the Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. “Salute to Vienna “ has been celebrating the New Year’s entry for 20 years in Vienna, and this year marks the production’s 13th return to the Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. The concert is an elegant way to enjoy lilting Strauss’s waltzes like the “Blue Danube” plus waltz and operetta favorites from “Die Fledermaus” and “The Merry Widow.”

Angela Lansbury Photo by Joan Marcus Viennese performers include soprano Lilia Galambos. Tenor Eugene Amesmann and baritone Thomas Weinhappel who will perform alongside members of the exquisite Europaballelt

Americana Masterworks Sparkle Anew This year has seen the reissue of four bona fide Americana masterworks. Anyone looking how to spend those valuable holiday gift cards should consider the deluxe and expanded reissues from Old 97’s and the Jayhawks.

Artist: Old 97’s Title: Hitchhike to Rhome (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Jayhawks, Wilco, the Bottle Rockets Tell me more: As great as “Hitchhike to Rhome” was upon its initial release way back in 1994, the 2-disc 20th anniversary

reissue of the seminal Old 97’s debut is even better. One of the alternative country’s most prolific and consistent artists over the past two decades, the Dallas. Texas-spawned outfit gets it right on every track on the album, which was recorded over a mere three days. Now masterfully remixed by Rip Rowan, “Hitchhike to Rhome” boasts nuanced tracks (“St. Ignatius,” “Wish the Worst”), flatout barn burners (“504,” “4 Leaf Clover”) and groundbreaking songs that masterfully blend bluegrass or honky tonk with indie-rock styling (the mandolinanchored “Doreen” and “If My

Heart Was a Car”) and rousing covers (including a killer take on Merle Haggards “Mama Tried”). The plethora of bonus tracks and demos that fill the second disc provides loads of reasons to celebrate Old 97s’ early work. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

studio LPs dating back to their eponymous debut released in 1986. But 2014 has been a particularly great year for fans of the Jayhawks thanks to the release of deluxe editions of three of their most beloved albums (1997s “Sound of Lies,” 2000s “Smile” and 2003s “Rainy-Day Music”). For those who love Artist: The Jayhawks authentic power-pop (think Big Titles: Sound of Lies, Star), tuneful alternative country Smile, Rainy-Day Music (the Flying Burrito Brothers You might like if you come to mind) and folk rock enjoy: Gram Parsons, (classic Buffalo Springfield). The Ryan Adams, Big Star Jayhawks explored a vast region Tell me more: Formed in of Americana across six-year Minneapolis back in 1985, the span and created some of the Jayhawks have issued eight best songs in memory along the

way. Recordings of songs such as “Smile,” “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me,” “Big Star” and “The Man Who Loved Life” continue to fully resonate today. A myriad of bonus and previously-unreleased tracks fill all three expanded releases (released on audio CD in July and via two-LP vinyl sets in September). Southern California audiences can catch the Gary Louris-led Jayhawks when they perform in Los Angeles (Jan. 10), Solana Beach (Jan. 11) or San Juan Capistrano (Jan. 12). Elvis Birthday Celebration - January 10, 2015

By Desert Star Staff Elvis is 80 years youngJanuary 8, 2015. An extra-special display this year is his Cadillac Limousine on display in the garage. He traveled in it to and from Los Angeles with Priscilla. Celebrate his birthday on January 10 with a live concert in the very living room where he and Priscilla lived and honeymooned. Drive your car to 1350 Ladera Circle. Take a one-hour tour at 9, 10, 11, or 12 and drive over to have lunch at Billy Reeds because it is our favorite and park your car

for free against the North Wall and take the free shuttle to the Honeymoon Hideaway at 2 PM, where you can enjoy the 3-5 concert featuring Chance Tinder as Elvis and the Phil Friendly Band. Spot performances will include Rock-a-Billy Hall of Famer Great Glenn Glenn singing his famous “One-cup of coffee” and “Laurie Anne”. Chan Romero will rock you and light up your spirits with “Hippy Hippy Shake”, a Hall of Fame song exactly as he recorded it years ago. They say you cannot go through a

day- 24- hours without seeing an image or a reminder of the King. Glen Glenn says that he has traveled the world performing. Very few people know the name of the American President, but just say Elvis and they know the King- the King of Rock-and –Roll. He and Colonel Parker chose the Alexander Estate when it became available because of the tragic airplane accident that the Alexander’s were killed in. It is a Rock Star Home. The House of Tomorrow- not a square room in it. Four concentric circles set up

on the rock with a Majestic view of the valley. It is the first round house in the valley. Built later is the Elrod House (aka James Bond House) and Bob Hope’s house. It is still a mystery who designed it and is one of the great houses in the valley and the country. If you know who participated in the construction, deign or planning history of it, we are collecting information for a Book about it. It is the Mecca for the Palm Spring Modernism focus, and the double-Decker London Bus visits us twice a day during Modernism week.

Tickets are available to Tour alone is $30 or the concert only is $45. Even so, the Best Buy is the combo, where you Tour and then attend the Concert for $60, a saving of $15. She and David Parker refer to themselves as “concerned Coachella Valley Residents and Highway Heros 62 Supporters.” Driving along Highway 62 between Joshua Tree National Park and Palm Springs is dramatic, but risky. Descending to the Highway 62 grades are scenic but could turn to disaster in a

moment. It was described by the Desert Sun newspaper as “one of the deadliest highways in America.”’ That will change now that Highway Heros is focused on raising funds with the desert community playing an active role in making a new state of the art red fire truck a reality. Said Parker, “What better Christmas present could we imagine?” Pam Price is the Vice Chairman of the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission.

S P O RT S Valley Preps for Coveted High School Basketball Tourney BY DANIEL MARINELLI

Coachella Valley – Just as school is winding down for winter break, high school basketball is heating up. This weekend (Dec. 26–27 and Dec. 29–30), eight desert schools will host the massive, 12 annual, 148-team MaxPreps Holiday Classic. The tournament is headlined by seven state or section winners across America, including last year’s undefeated state champion Mater Dei Monarchs. All the high schools from the Desert Valley League (La Quinta, Palm Desert, Cathedral City, Coachella Valley, Palm Springs and Xavier Prep) the Shadow Hills Knights and Rancho Mirage Rattlers will be participating. The primary host of the tournament will be Rancho Mirage High School. Other hosting sites are Palm Valley, Desert Christian Academy, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Desert Chapel, Xavier Prep and Shadow Hills. “This year’s MaxPreps Holiday Classic promises to deliver the most competitive tournament that we have ever hosted,” tournament co-director Wayne Merino said in an interview with MaxPreps.com. “Several teams are capable of taking home the championship trophy in December.” In addition to the four-time defending state champion Monarchs, the tournament features Plano,TX-based Prestonwood Christian, section champion San Jose-based Archbishop Mitty, Folsom, San Juan Capistrano-based Jserra Catholic, Hayward-based Moreau Catholic and Jersey City, NJ-based St. Peter’s Prep. Some famous tournament alumni include Aaron and Andrew Harrison (Kentucky), Xavier Johnson (Colorado) and Kahwi Leanord (San Antonio Spurs). There is no shortage of talented athletes in the Classic’s 2014 edition. MJ Cage (Mater Dei / 2016), Rex Pflueger (Mater Dei / 2015), Oscar Frayer (Moreau Catholic / 2016) and six-footeight sophomore Cody Riley (2017/ Sierra Canyon / MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year) will all be players to watch this weekend. The tournament will be highly coveted, so if you are a basketball fan, make sure to get out to the gyms early this weekend. Regular Desert Valley and De Anza League schedules will resume after January 1. For more info on the MaxPreps Holiday Classic, visit MaxPreps.com.
