California Dreamers California Adds 215,000 People As Population Inches Toward 40 Million NBC PS News Staff California’s population grew by 215,000 people but is still shy of 40 million, the state announced Friday. The population of the most populous state hit 39.8 million as of July 1, 2018, according to numbers from the Department of Finance that began in July 2017. California’s population
far exceeds that of any other state; Texas ranks second with nearly 29 million people, followed by Florida and New York. California’s growth was driven by about 200,000 more births than deaths and a net migration of 21,000, meaning more people came to the state than left. Inland counties such as Amador and Placer,

Riverside County grew by 27,000 people, the largest numeric change. The population estimates come as the state and nation prepare for a new census

3 Popular Eating Plans You’ll See in the New Year
By Desert Star Staff If you’re thinking about revamping how you eat in the new year, you might want to think twice about the trendy dairy-free plans that crop up on your social media feed – as they could leave you missing out on nutrients you need. Three of the most popular and health-promoting eating plans of the moment – the Mediterranean Diet, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Diet and Flexitarian Diet – all include dairy milk as an important
component, and according to a study in the “Journal of the American Dietetic Association,” it’s hard to get nutrients you need without it. New research also suggests adding an extra serving of dairy to the Mediterranean Diet makes it even more nutritious, boosting amounts of calcium, vitamin D and potassium without exceeding recommendations for nutrients to limit, like saturated fat and sodium, according to a study published in “The Journal
of the American College of Nutrition.” A second new study found not only does incorporating more dairy improve the quality of the diet, it benefits health, as well – specifically improving blood pressure and levels of good cholesterol (HDL) compared to a standard low-fat diet, according to research in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.” While the Mediterranean Diet typically includes around two servings of dairy a day, these studies built in 3-4. The DASH Diet, long known for its positive effects on heart health, includes three servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy per day. Good
news for fans of whole milk: it may be just as effective when it includes full-fat dairy, too, according to recent research in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.” Researchers found a DASH diet that included whole milk and other full-fat dairy products lowered blood pressure just as much as the traditional version. As a high-quality, complete protein, dairy milk is also an important part of the Flexitarian Diet, which encourages more plants and less meat. Many plant-based proteins are incomplete, which means they don’t provide some of the building blocks your body needs. Dairy milk is also an important source
of calcium, as substituting milk with non-dairy calcium sources like fortified soy milk or leafy greens can lead to gaps in other key nutrients such as protein, vitamin D, phosphorus, riboflavin, potassium, magnesium, vitamin A and vitamin B12, according to a study in the journal “Nutrition Research.” Instead of eating in a way that could leave you at risk of nutrient deficiencies, opt for a more balanced approach to the new year and consider a plan that includes dairy milk. HealthCare Changes for the Coming year Create a Positive Future.
By Janice Gough The U.S. healthcare industry can expect more stability in 2019 as FDA and CMS streamline regulation. Healthcare investors will reinvest. With cash from last year’s tax reform law, they see more significant opportunity. By giving traditional healthcare companies the chance to sell Non-Core assets and increase Core assets, they are more desirable investments. more than one state may be hard-pressed to develop comprehensive business strategies. While waiting to see if the government will reform the Affordable Care Act, they may not need to. Technology and Consumer choice could be the drivers forcing this change. With the possibility of a looming recession, consumers cannot afford the premiums offered under ACA and want other options. In Seventeen states, excluding California, many people have elected temporary health plans, which are 1/3rd the price of ACA. They offer coverage for 364 days and can be renewed 3 times. That extra day of non-coverage allows them not to include Pre-existing conditions each renewable year. These are plans which offer protection on a “claims made” basis. They are great savings for healthy consumers who want the unexpected covered. With the luxury of changing to traditional ACA plans during open enrollment each year, a consumer with a newly developed Medical condition can elect to enroll in ACA for the coming year and have the protection of unlimited lifetime coverage. More Healthcare products and services will be developed and offered to meet the
needs of the consumer. Many consumers who have opted out of purchasing the current highly inflated ACA metal plans want to buy just the protection they need, as opposed to government model plans with all the bells and whistles. These are the benefits which have escalated premiums. To keep premiums affordable, the consumer is left to elect for high deductible plans and end up paying for most of the services they will use. The consumer no longer pays the penalty for not being insured. With the advent of a menu of stand-alone services, they could purchase these benefits to fit their needs and re-insure on ACA at annual enrollment, in the event of a significant illness. Meanwhile, consumers want more choices in how they receive care. Most consumers polled said they would opt to receive hospital care at home if it cost less than an inpatient stay. In determining the results comparing patients in recovery in their homes vs. hospital care, patients have experienced excellent results. By healing from home, their immune systems are not subject to foreign bacteria which they are subject to in facilities. Primary care for routine exams, preventative injections
will begin to be done ins Large package stores, like Walmart, Rite Aid, etc. Many consumers polled said they would try an FDAapproved app or online tool to treat a medical condition. Big tech firms, like Google or Microsoft, will begin to offer more services in the health-related field. Patients will see increased usage of digital treatments, by using an app. or digital program to assist in their treatment. To improve better outcomes, digital therapeutics and devices connected to patients will be used to determine the success of therapies. The coming year will also see providers switch to Telehealth-based 24/7 “care models” by using artificial intelligence, and robotic process automation and other technologies. Such technologies will be “key” to helping companies shift, as well as reducing manual entry and analysis tasks. It will help to reduce costs and contribute to expedite improved services to the patient. Tax reform will also cut costs for For-Profit entities, putting them at a more competitive advantage. Nonprofit hospitals and other tax-exempt organizations could face more tax liability due to requirements around fringe benefits and the
Frozen Out Directors By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Our board established an executive committee consisting of three board members, excluding the two remaining board members, under Corporations Code Section 7212. Later, one of the non-executive committee board members sold their condominium and the executive committee appointed a replacement board member. There are four remaining board members; three on the executive committee and one who is not on the executive committee. Since the Corporations Code prohibits the executive committee from “filling of vacancies on the board or in any committee which has the authority of the board” per Section 7212(a)(2), can the action be reversed, changed or modified, or nullified? What is the appropriate venue for resolution, short of filing an action in court? Best Regards, R.D., Palm Desert
Dear R.D.: I am skeptical of so-called “executive committees.” In your situation, it appears the majority is freezing out the other two directors and doing business in secret. If a board majority meets on HOA business, whether calling it an executive committee, “working meeting,” or coffee klatch, Civil Code 4090 says it is a “board meeting” and its activities must be in the open, with advance agenda notice to members. The committee’s decisions made in violation of the Open Meeting Act could be considered illegal and outside the association’s corporate process. Yes, under Corporations Code 7212, the executive committee is exceeding its power. However, and more importantly, the majority approach violates the Open Meeting Act, rendering all of its actions subject to challenge. Rather than expensive legal action to challenge this exclusive group of directors, perhaps the homeowners would rather elect directors who will properly serve and who are willing to work with the entire board as a team. December 26, 2018
Boards aren’t required to be unanimous and the majority still rules, but a board can’t freeze out the directors in the minority. Good luck to your community. Kelly. Dear Mr. Richardson: I am a board member. During the past year, our HOA has received invoices for [tens of thousands of dollars] from our attorney. The problem is that the invoices are being redacted before submittal to the management company who in turn pays the blacked-out invoice. At one point the HOA was paying for a legal action of a board member against a homeowner and the reason for the blacked-out bills was it was confidential information. That action ended but the redaction of invoices continues, and the management company continues to pay the invoices. Is this in any way legal? T.M., Anaheim Hills Dear T.M.: Under Corporations Code 8334, directors may view any association record. The board should see the entire bill, except for any director who is
elimination of an incentive for certain people to contribute to charitable groups. Drug and medical device companies will face uncertainties from tariffs and evolving trade pressures from foreign trading partners, including China, Mexico, and Canada. Drug and device makers could face steeper prices for materials and chemicals, while hospitals could see costs of medical supplies rise and the potential for shortages. By altering several provisions to the Affordable Care Act, a reduction in premiums is forecasted. Medicaid expansion, especially in the Red States, will help to reduce charity care. It looks like a healthier HealthCare year for all.

the subject of the legal services and who therefore has a conflict of interest. If the board does not see the complete bill, it should not be approving that bill for payment. The attorney works for the corporation, not any particular director, and should be providing sufficient information for the board to know why the association is incurring legal fees. Ask questions – that is your job as a director. It appears someone in association leadership may be controlling access to the information and keeping it from other board colleagues. Tsunami crashes into crowd as Indonesian pop band play live
By Desert Star Staff Chilling footage captures the moment that a giant wave crashed a live show by Jakarta pop band ‘Seventeen,’ as a tsunami wreaked havoc in
Indonesia. One band member died and several are missing. The video, which lasts less than a minute, shows a packed audience at the Tanjung Lesung Beach Resort
in West Java, which overlooks the Krakatoa volcano. Revelers can be seen seated at tables, applauding as they dine, oblivious to what is about to happen. Moments
later, band members and screaming spectators are seen being washed away as a wave appears from nowhere and pounds the stage. In a tearful video posted in the aftermath of the incident, the band’s lead singer Riefian Fajarsyah said that one band member, bassist Muhammad Awal Purbani, 36, nicknamed Bani, and their road manager Oki Wijaya had died. Fajarsyah said his wife, Dylan, the two remaining band members and a crew member were still missing. “Andi, Herman and Ujang have not been found, please pray for them. Please pray also that my wife will be found soon. Please pray also for Bani and Oki (who passed away),” the inconsolable Fajarsyah said in an Instagram post, as translated by Channel News Asia. For his wife’s 26th birthday on Sunday, Fajarsyah posted
a picture of the couple in Paris on Instagram along with a heartbreaking caption urging her to come home. At least 235 people have died and almost 900 have been injured after the tsunami ripped through the area in western Indonesia, off the coast of Sumatra. Twentyeight people are still missing. Officials said that the tsunami was triggered by a combination of factors, in particular by volcanic activity at the Krakatoa volcano and an abnormally high tide due to a full moon. Meanwhile, the death toll is expected to climb further as some remote areas are still be searched for survivors. “This number will continue to rise, considering [that] not all places have been checked,” said National Disaster Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
At least 235 dead, nearly 900 injured as tsunami hits Indonesia coastal areas By Desert Star Staff At least 235 people have been killed as a tsunami hit beaches around Sunda Strait in Indonesia on Saturday night, according to the country’s officials. Dozens remain missing, and hundreds have been injured. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the wave was not caused by an earthquake but was possibly the result of an eruption of Mount Krakatoa. The agency later explained that its early warning systems are mostly tied to tectonic activity, rather than volcanic. Video filmed at one of the affected beaches and posted on Twitter shows the wave rolling in as bathers

Sunda Strait separates the islands of Java and Sumatra. Its coast is located about 100km (62 miles) from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The tsunami-like conditions were likely caused by undersea landslides resulting from volcanic activity at Krakatoa Volcano, according to the disaster agency. The volcano, also located in the Sunda Strait, has been spewing ash and periodically erupting for the past several months.

Proposed SNAP Rules: An “End Run around Congress?” By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – After failing to get deep cuts to nutrition assistance through Congress, President Donald Trump wants to get them by changing the rules. Trump had backed a Republican plan that critics warned would have ended SNAP or food-stamp benefits for two million Americans and school meal access for 265,000 children. Congress rejected those changes when it passed the Farm Bill last week. So on Thursday, Trump proposed new rules restricting states’ ability to provide SNAP benefits to

childless adults living in highunemployment areas who are struggling to find work. Rebecca Vallas, vicepresident of the poverty team at the Center for American Progress, says the rules would force hundreds of thousands of unemployed SNAP participants to lose the help they need to put food on the table. “Ultimately, he failed to gut food stamps in the Farm Bill and so now, he’s sidestepping Congress and trying unilaterally to slash food assistance by fiat,” says Vallas. “And he’s doing that just days before Christmas.” The administration points
out that unemployment is at record low levels and says the new rules would save $15 billion over ten years. Vallas insists a better approach would be to raise the federal minimum wage, set at $7.25 an hour for the past ten years. She says raising it to just $12 an hour would make a huge difference. “That would save $53 billion in nutrition assistance over the coming decade, and it would do so by ensuring that workers earn enough to afford food,” says Vallas. The administration’s own numbers show that under the proposed rule December 26, 2018
change, more than 750,000 unemployed people would lose SNAP benefits. Vallas adds research has shown that taking food away from workers who can’t meet strict workreporting requirements is counterproductive. “When workers have access to basics like food
and housing and health care, they’re better able to work and they have higher earnings,” says Vallas. Once the rules are published in the Federal Register, there will be a 60 day period for public comment before they could be put into effect.

rom heading off to college to marrying the love of your life to taking those dream vacations, life’s biggest moments are often tied to being financially responsible. While memories of your first dance as newlyweds don’t often include the cost of the band, money is frequently front and center when planning for some of life’s larger events. From early adulthood through retirement, a credit card is one tool that can help you achieve your financial goals while offsetting some costs along the way. “No matter your stage in life, it’s important to plan ahead and have the right tools to meet your financial needs,” said Jason Gaughan, credit cards executive at Bank of America. “A credit card offers flexibility, convenience and an increasing amount of rewards that can make your budget go even further.” These tips from financial experts can help you maximize financial tools like credit cards throughout life’s milestones.
College Years
For many, college represents the first instance of being responsible for personal finances. During this time, some students apply for their first credit cards to cover a wide range of costs such as books or travel expenses to and from school. Experts agree it’s important to start building credit at this age, but only if you can handle the responsibility associated with a credit card. “Though credit can be a somewhat foreign topic for beginners, online resources such as Bank of America’s Better Money Habits offers tips to help young adults learn about things like how your credit score is calculated, the difference between a credit report and credit score and explains why it’s important to understand before signing up for a credit card,” said Lysandra Perez, a relationship manager for Bank of America who is responsible for educating clients on establishing strong financial habits including managing and building credit.” According to BetterMoneyHabits.com, an important rule for building strong credit is to spend no more than 30 percent of your available credit line. The online resource also recommends that students look for credit cards that offer low interest rates and no annual fee to help minimize finance charges if they aren’t able to pay their bills in full each month. “Establishing strong financial habits early on can help set you up for future credit opportunities later in life,” Perez said.
Early Adulthood
As people become more established professionally, they often become more comfortable financially, allowing them to pursue their passions. Using a credit card that offers rewards tied to interests is a strategy some young adults utilize. According to a Bank of America survey, 91 percent of Millennials ages 23-29 plan to use a rewards card to help pay for upcoming travel.
www.desertstarweekly.com
“It’s common for people in their mid-to-late 20s to prioritize maximizing credit card rewards,” Gaughan said. “They understand using a card for smaller, everyday purchases like coffee and groceries can be an easy way to earn points to pay for fun events like a trip abroad or home for a college reunion.” Saving and tracking rewards is key during this period, too. Digital tools like My Rewards provide new visibility into the rewards you earn and how to maximize their value. Also look to explore banking rewards options like Preferred Rewards, which can offer special perks and benefits like credit card rewards bonuses, discounts on home and auto loans, interest rate boosters and no-fee ATM transactions.
Marriage and Parenthood
A seismic shift often occurs when entering the marriage and parenthood stage of life. The individually minded spending of early adulthood transitions to down payments on homes and saving money for children’s educations. These years typically require more financial savviness to make every dollar count as large expenses requiring loans, such as houses and cars, are more prevalent during this stage. Along with larger purchases, these years also often come with grocery store trips, filling up the gas tank for carpool duty and buying new clothes as your kids grow. Look for a cash back card that lets you earn rewards on your everyday purchases
December 26, 2018
and offers redemption for cash back to cover expenses or invest in a savings account.
Retirement
By retirement age, you’ve likely spent decades saving and are looking to enjoy the fruits of your years of labor. While the amount saved for retirement varies greatly depending on your situation, it’s always important to spend wisely during retirement, and a credit card that reaps high rewards can help. “There are many ways to continue saving and investing once in retirement,” said David Poole, head of Merrill Edge Advisory, Client Services and Digital Capabilities at Bank of America. “Credit cards that allow you to invest rewards back into your retirement fund is an easy way to continue contributing to your 401(k).” Credit cards can also help retirees fulfill longstanding travel goals. Some like the Bank of America Premium Rewards card offer lucrative travel benefits such as earning two points for every dollar spent on travel and dining purchases. Look for points that are flexible and can be used toward future travel purchases or as cash back. “With so many credit card options available, it’s important to understand what your current needs are,” Gaughan said. “Do your research, develop a strategy and work with your financial institution to determine the best card for your lifestyle.” Find more information and credit card options at bankofamerica.com/creditcards.

Hardcore porn at school? Calls for sex education to get more graphic
By Desert Star Staff The internet has given teenagers access to so much porn, fetish, and experimental sex that schools may have to get a lot more graphics when addressing classes, a study has found. Teenagers are becoming more adventurous and are moving away from ‘traditional’ intercourse, according to researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine(LSHTM) and University College London. By monitoring sexual habits, the team found the number of 16-24s moving away from traditional sexual intercourse had doubled. Access to porn online was blamed as one of the problems. “At a time when much sex and relationships education is being updated, keeping pace with current trends in sexual practices is crucial so that curricula are tailored to the realities of young people’s experiences” Dr. Ruth Lewis, who conducted the work
while at the LSHTM said. “By shedding light on when some young people are having sex and what kinds of sex they are having, our study highlights the need for accurate sex and relationships education that provides opportunities to discuss consent and safety about a range of sexual practices.” Researchers compared today’s sexual practice with what teenagers have been doing since 1990. They found sex was changing, but the age of the teens’ first-ever sexual experience has not changed much in almost 30 years. The median age for loss of virginity among men and women born between 1990 and 1996 was 14, yet it is now 16 across for both men and women. However, it has got younger over the decades. The median age in 1950 was 20 for women and 19 for men. “The changes in practices we see here are consistent with the widening of other aspects of young people’s
sexual experience and are perhaps not surprising given the rapidly changing social context and the ever-increasing number of influences on sexual behavior. It is important to keep up-to-date with trends in sexual lifestyles to help young people safeguard their health and increase their well-being,” Kaye Wellings, Professor of Sexual and Reproductive
Health at LSHTM, said. The research was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health. Last year the site Pornhub, which offers free content, revealed its videos were watched 92 billion times in 2016. It also boasted 64 million daily visitors. Plans to put age blockers on porn sites will come into force after the government
announced legislation earlier this year. Those in the industry are furious, claiming it will “change the internet” and allow sites to collect more data on those using them. It is believed the online porn sector is worth around $15 billion (£11.3 billion). It reaches more people – and younger people – every year.

jaw-dropping details about working for the Mob and how they made millions in online porn. It is filled with scandalous revelations such as shopping sexy pics of a famous Billionaire’s wife with attorney Keith Davidson who recently represented Stormy Daniels in the hushmoney payoff to Michael Cohen for President Trump. And if you’re surprised that Kim Kardashian confessed, she was on drugs during the making of
her sex tape, wait until you read the story of another celebrity sex tape, where the star overdosed on drugs and almost died in the John Belushi room at the Chateau Marmont. The book is an incredible inside-view of the whole sex industry from soft-core magazines such as Playboy to the advent of the Internet. To boot, Gail says she was a “wannabe” mainstream actress at the time, and she shares candidly what was going on with the whole Hollywood Casting Couch. In the era of the MeToo Movement, Thackray emerges as a strong woman who manages to play the game in a man’s world and use it to her advantage. This is not about a woman as a victim, dishing out the dirt on powerful men in Hollywood and the Sex Industry, it’s a light-hearted, often hilarious look at the real inner workings of a male-dominatedindustry and how a young girl was able to pull strings. “Sometimes real life is so absurd, it’s hilariously funny, and you just can’t make this stuff up,” explains Thackray. The scope of the book covers years of some of the juiciest topics; from behindthe-scenes on the most notorious players in the sex biz to the development of technology through the Internet sex sites in the dot-com boom and Yahoo passing Thackray all the “naughty sex searches they December 26, 2018

Thackray created a sexy photo library, shooting for magazines such as Penthouse, Club, and High Society in the ‘80s and ‘90s and changed the industry with her magazine Barely Legal. Her book gives us an intimate look into the real lives of Guccione, Flynt, Hugh Hefner and the wild parties at the Playboy Mansion. At the launch of the Internet, Thackray owned over a million nude images and was the major supplier of naked pics on the web. Thackray won the first ever Internet copyright lawsuit, after which Forester Research evaluated
Thackray’s company at over 50 million dollars. Thackray also reveals her time as a scream queen starlet (aka Gail Harris) and the inner workings of the Hollywood Casting Couch until she finally landed at the respected CAA with Michael Ovitz. HOROSCOPES ARIES
A new phase of reality begins. Great aspirations push you forward into dedication and hard work. Your selfidentity, sense of family and home, intimate relationships and professional career will change and expand. Work with others cooperatively. All that you aspire to do will come forth only if cooperation is foremost. Tend carefully to moods. Use them imaginatively to create all things new.
TAURUS Your religion and spirituality, your mind (thinking, study, ideas), daily life, health, teaching and travel are all divinely influenced. Life will seem to be rather dreamy. You might not like this much as it feels impractical. However, it’s a time of rest and healing. Dreams help manifest longheld visions. Be in the Sun as much as possible. Write down plans and ideas. A new phase of life begins. Try not to be too distant with those you love.
GEMINI We work in between incarnations. Each lifetime we attempt to discover our place in the Sun. When we die, it’s our last thought that determines where we go. In this lifetime, we are to train our minds in all ways. Planning and strategy are important in the coming year. We can also plan consciously for when we

die. You are not dying at this time. This is only an exercise of preparation. Begin training your mind on what you will think about at the time of death.
CANCER The New Year brings great promise of happiness. You won’t feel distracted. Your mind will be clear, harmonious and challenged to move toward what you’ve always wanted. You will be creative. When there are differences you will step aside (like the crab you are) circumventing disharmony. See each day as an opportunity to do your very best.
LEO The New Year is golden for you in terms of work, confidence and growth, both subtle and steady. You want will to make changes concerning health and healing. Become a member of a spa, begin an exercise and diet regime with yoga, tai chi, biking, swimming, etc. Continued focus on health is most important. You will seek the Diamond Light. Compassion and altruism become your newest psychological orientations.
VIRGO Allow constancy of effort into your life, not turning back when difficulties arise. Stand at the middle point. You may feel your life is not moving forward. However, many things are occurring within. New realities,
resources, and things social rise to the surface offering satisfaction and intimacy. Tend to partners and those who love you with care and nourishment. Let your mind be at ease.
LIBRA You will work very hard this coming year. When in doubt call upon your angels to flood your life with light, information and assistance. It will happen immediately. You felt challenged this past year. The upcoming year offers greater progress and power. Avoid controversial decisions. Allow time for Right Decisions leading to Right Action. Don’t show dissatisfaction in relationships. Love is not a feeling. It’s a willingness to love more.
SCORPIO You will look back on the past year and see that it was good. There was (and will be) exceptional growth, support, gains and progress with creativity rewarded. You might be too impulsive, leading to expectations that are unreasonable to others. Provide affection and attention to everyone, especially friends and loved ones. You will be busy socially for a while. Then your temperament becomes serious and internal. Spending time alone is part of your destiny.
SAGITTARIUS You will feel quite dynamic as the New Year unfolds. There
will be a fire within burning brighter and fuller. You may need to control that fire a bit lest conflicts with others are created. Use that inner fire for creativity, achieving greater goals, greater focus and direction. You will rise in stature through new ways of thinking. This has already begun. You’re more positive, bright like the Sun eliminating obstacles and hurdles. Do not compete. Share instead.
CAPRICORN Saturn is your ruler, the planet helping you in all endeavors, especially climbing the mountain, which means ladder of success. Success in whatever way you see success for yourself. Saturn helps you choose good shoes, too. I wish you a happy birthday for your new year. Remember to speak with your angels. They stand by waiting for instructions. They are to help you with all that you need and want in the coming year. Make your list. Check it twice, three times.
in yourself, and the important social role you play in the world.
PISCES Rest more in the coming year. Focus, stamina and vitality return gradually. Remain conscious of fluctuating finances. You want Right Use of money and resources. Past friends and lovers continue to occupy your mind. Send them on their way with love and blessings. Or invite them along the Path. Not many will be able to absorb the fiery field of the Path. You will be called to leadership. Step into this with confidence. The many years of the past struggles have prepared you. AQUARIUS The New Year focuses upon relationships, love, friendship and romance. Avoid any major changes at the first half of the year. Instead focus on building a firmer foundation of security and creativity. New realities can emerge the last half of the year. Travel when you can. It brings you pleasure, excitement, friendships and relaxation. Have pride in your accomplishments,
Millions of Americans Rely on Strong End-of-Year Giving
By Desert Star Staff ALEXANDRIA, Va., The Salvation Army’s ability to serve more than 23 million people annually depends on the continual generosity of everyday people. Following devastating wildfires and catastrophic hurricanes, thousands of families are left in desperate need, and with the potential de-incentivization for middle-income Americans to give under the new tax code, year-end donations are more critical than ever. “For more than a century, we’ve been blessed with

contributions during the holiday season that fuel our efforts to meet our mission of helping those in need,” said Commissioner David Hudson, national commander of The Salvation Army. “We’ve seen an outpouring of generosity to aid first responders and survivors in the wake of unprecedented natural disasters and we pray that same spirit continues during this critical year-end giving season.” Despite positive economic news, it’s worth noting that the U.S. Census Bureau estimates
nearly 40 million Americans still live in poverty, with millions more living paycheck to paycheck. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, more than a half a million people nationwide are homeless on a given night, and that number is increasing for the first time since 2015. In the past year, the generous support of the public empowered The Salvation Army to deliver 52.5 million hot meals, provide disaster assistance to more than 240,000 people, assist December 26, 2018
147,000 people struggling with addiction, and help a countless number of children and senior citizens with daycare, transportation and holiday assistance. “Our concerns about a decline in year-end giving are based on our fundraising history,” said Lt. Col. Ward Matthews, secretary for national community relations and development. “In 2017, The Salvation Army raised more in the last two days of the year than in the entire month of November, and contributions during November and December dwarfed the entire rest of the year.” According to the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, only 5 percent of taxpayers will be incentivized by the new tax code to make a year-end contribution this year, and that could result in a $12 to $20 billion drop in charitable giving. To address these concerns and provide for
the needs of another 23 million Americans next year, The Salvation Army calls upon new and regular supporters to give for the millions of struggling families moving into the new year. When you donate to The Salvation Army, the money stays in your local community, and a little can go a long way. $2.37 provides a meal to someone in need $25 helps provide Christmas gifts for a child in need $30 can provide a night of shelter $50 can feed a family of three for a week To help families in need this holiday season, visit salvationarmyusa.org or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1800-725-2769). Of every dollar donated, 82 cents will be used to provide social services to those who need it most https://www. salvationarmyusa.org/usn/ Source: PRNewswire

Saint Nick attire allowing parents and children to take pictures at no cost. Last year he did the same while
also handing out toys. “My wife and I spoke earlier this year and I decided I wanted to make it bigger and better so we’ve been buying toys throughout the year,” said Collins. On Sunday December 23rd at 6 p.m. Santa on Via Vista in Desert Hot Springs is expecting up to 350 kids to show up for a photo, gift, candy, cookies and hot cocoa to wash it down. The entire “Santa at the mall” experience free of charge for anyone who drops by. “One lady said that she has three kids and it was going to cost her over a hundred bucks. I said ‘I don’t charge anything.’ They even offered to pay and I don’t charge anything for it,” Collins said.
Collins says he became accustomed to spoiling his own children. But now that they are adults, Collins shares the same spirit of giving with the children in his neighborhood. Spinners, dolls, hot wheels and puzzles are up for grabs. Some of it payed for out of his own wallet, some donated. This year Collins is giving local malls a run for their money. “My daughter in law is a semi-professional photographer and she’s actually going to be taking photos with her camera, she’s done a background and she will give people an email address where they get the professional photos from,” said Collins. Nonprofit gives the “Gift Of Music” for the holidays NBC PS- Daytona Everett A nonprofit rock and roll thrift store called Music Heals is giving kids the “gift of music” this holiday season as they peak in their sales for the year. “It’s kind of cool because people ask how much this item and I is say you decide the price of the item,” Jason Nutter, the owner of the store, said. Not the normal response you hear from a store during the holidays but Music Heals isn’t your average store. www.desertstarweekly.com
“We have a lot of programs,” Nutter said. “We work with over a hundred kids a week and this place supplies the instruments.” The profit they make from selling donated items go towards providing instruments to autistic students with a passion for music. “Mostly records, vinyl records, vintage things, a lot of cool stuff.” Nutter teaches as well so during the holiday break,
he’s picking up shifts at the busy store to help out. “I was like, I’m going to work the Christmas season and I’ve been here since like ten in the morning till I’d say like nine at night and people have just been having fun and buying things and donating,” he said. “Its been great.” “It’s a really good foundation,” Norah Adams, a musician and customer said. “I think it’s really cool, I like stores like this.” December 26, 2018
The musicians’ next performance is on February 1st at the Roadhouse in Palm Springs alongside local artists Jesika Von Rabbit, the House of Broken

Galilee Center Still Receiving Toy Donations
NBC PS Claudia Buccio Boxes at the Galilee Center in Mecca are all marked up with hundreds of toys ready to find a home on Christmas Day. The center is expecting more than a thousand children on their 8th annual toy giveaway, and each child will get 2 or 3 presents. Lupe Torres is the office manager at the Galilee Center, who said the organization is still taking toy donations for families across the Coachella Valley. “Most of them are low income, their parents work in the hospitality center or single parents like you mentioned, and they don’t have the funding to buy them bicycles or 2 or 3 toys to their entire family,” Torres said. Organizers and volunteers have been planning this for
months. Torres said she has noticed that more families come every year. However, the event is only a few days away, and they are still running low on toys. “We started in September asking for donations and asking organizations to help us,” she said. Augustine Casino stepped in to help their desert community. Brett Hunn is the assistant manager at Augustine Casino, and he said it was important for them to help collect toys and food. “It’s our way to give back to the community,” Hunn said. “It’s our little part to help the Galilee Center, they are doing so much for the families around our area, so this can only add to the help. “ Augustine Casino already delivered some toys to the
organization, so volunteers are sorting out toys to make sure they are ready for the big day. “It’s gratifying to see the children’s smiley faces and to walk away with a smile on their face with all their toys,”
Torres said. “A lot of them can’t even carry all their toys, people have to help them and moms have to help them.” Torres recommends families to show up before 10 am because they will run

ome home upgrades are aesthetic, and some are for function. These ideas, all with better home safety in mind, show there’s no reason you can’t have both. If you tend to think of home safety in strictly functional terms, you may be relieved to know you don’t have to abandon your designer sensibilities when it comes to improving your home’s overall safety. In fact, these tips from the decorating experts at JCPenney show just how easy it can be to make safe look sensational.
Appliances
Outdated appliances aren’t just an eyesore and drain on your home’s energy resources; they can actually be dangerous. Over time, electrical components and other mechanical functions can wear down, which may result in a higher risk of fire or water damage. A new suite of appliances can give a tired kitchen an instant facelift, and with the wide range of options available, you can create just about any look
you desire, from an ultra-modern sleek motif to a farm-style design that blends modern convenience with yesteryear charm. If replacing your home appliances isn’t in the budget, it’s important to ensure they’re being properly maintained. This applies to the kitchen, of course, but also other appliances throughout the house, such as the climate control system, water heater and water filtration system. Regularly cleaning and assessing operations can help you keep on top of potential concerns. Also keep up on regular service schedules so an expert can evaluate problems that may not be immediately apparent and ensure your appliances are operating at peak efficiency.
Window Treatments
Windows, and more particularly window treatments, can often play a significant role in a room’s ambiance. Custommade drapery and other window treatments are ideal for giving any living space a personal feel. However, upgrading your window treatments isn’t just about

creating a delightful new space. Cords on window treatments pose a significant risk, especially in homes with small children and pets who may become tangled in the cords. A new window covering safety standard by the American National Standards Institute requires a vast majority of window covering products sold in the United States to be cordless or have inaccessible or short cords. By early 2019, corded window coverings will only be available on custom-order products, as corded products are still needed by a wide range of consumers, including the elderly and those with disabilities, those short in stature and those with windows in hard-to-reach locations. To ensure your window treatments meet both your safety and functional needs, it’s a good idea to work with a certified window treatment expert who can meet in your home to find the perfect window treatments to complement your style, decor and budget. From energy-efficient shades and cordless shutters to blackout draperies, privacy blinds and decorative hardware, a
JCPenney Decorating Consultant can work one-on-one with you to bring your vision to light. For added peace of mind, their professionally installed window treatments include a one-year guarantee.
Doors
An attractive, inviting door is an important element of your home’s exterior facade, but it’s also an important safety feature. For the door itself, a solid wood door is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally sound, but if your budget can stand it, steel is even better. Avoid pretty window panes that can be easily broken, giving
access to the locks. Be sure the frame is in good order, as well, as even the sturdiest door can be forced off a weak, rotted or poorly installed frame. A deadbolt that extends at least an inch into the doorframe is a basic must. It’s also a good idea to forgo the push-button knobs and opt instead for a more secure keyed doorknob, which is more difficult for an intruder to manipulate. Also remember the same principals apply to every entry point to the house, not just the front door. Start planning upgrades to your home’s safety at jcpenney. myhomeprojectcenter.com.

Borack’s new 414-page Shake Some Action 2.0: An Updated Guide to the 200 Greatest Power Pop Albums 1970-2017, the Popdudes’ “Maximum Rock Stupidity” is a great collection featuring mostly-faithful covers of some of the most melodic tunes penned this side of the Beatles’ “Abbey Road.” The Popdudes (featuring Sparkle*Jets U.K. front man Michael Simmons and the aforementioned Borack) unleash rip roarin’ takes on material ranging from a ferocious tear through a mini-medley of Cheap Trick’s “Hello There” and “Top of the World” and sweet reading of Paul McCartney and Wings’ “With A Little Luck” to a shimmering cover of ABBA’s “Waterloo” and equally-rousing turn with the Turtles’ 1968 hit “Elenore.” One of this writer’s favorites on the disc is a introspective version of Men At Work’s “Overkill.” Other classic songs covered include the Electric Light Orchestra classic “Xanadu,” John Fogertypenned “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” and Walter Egan’s enduring 1978 Billboard Hot 100 entry “Magnet and Steel.” Information: http://www. goodmusicguy.com/shakesome-action-2-0-book-200greatest-power-pop-albums/

Trump to stay in Washington as government shutdown creeps over Christmas By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump will spend Christmas away from his Mar-a-Lago Florida estate due to the government shutdown, as the White House and lawmakers scramble to avert defunding key government agencies over the border wall row. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders announced that Trump’s wife, Melania, who had already left for Florida, would be flown back to the White House so the Trumps can spend Christmas together. Trump is not normally known for skipping his Mara-Lago days off, which have come under media scrutiny for being too frequent and sometimes ill-timed. In February, he came under fire for “playing golf” at his estate in the wake of the Florida school shooting that left 17 dead, while funerals for the victims took place just 45 miles away. While the Friday midnight deadline for the Senate to approve a bipartisan spending bill has already passed, federal workers won’t return to work until Wednesday, meaning the White House still has time to clinch a last-minute deal with the Senate Democrats. If no decision is made, the shutdown will leave about 800,000 workers across nine government agencies without
pay, including NASA and the departments of State, Justice, Homeland Security, Agriculture, Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. 380,000 of them would be put on unpaid leave, while 420,000 would continue to do their job without pay. The shutdown would take its toll on national parks and landmarks, with many expected to close down at the height of the holiday season. The Statue of Liberty, however, will remain open to the public, with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) saying that the state would reimburse the federal government $65,000 for each day of the shutdown. Closing a rare session on Saturday, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell told lawmakers to go home for holidays, saying that the Senate would convene for what most likely would be a “pro forma”session on Monday. However, he did not rule out calling the Senators back if a deal is struck. Vice President Mike Pence said they are “still talking,” implying that the White House is bent on trashing out a compromise despite the odds. The chances that this year’s end will be spared shutdown chaos seems very low after Trump refused to
Christmas decorations at the White House, Washington DC, November 26, 2018 © REUTERS/Leah Millis sign a bipartisan resolution to keep the government open until February 8 on Wednesday, because it lacked any funding for his border wall. Under Trump’s pressure, the Republican-controlled House on Thursday passed a bill which includes $5.7 billion for the wall, thus setting the stage for the Democrats in the Senate to complete the shutdown, being as they are strongly opposed to what Trump now calls “artistically designed steel slats” on the US-Mexico border. Some lawmakers still harbor optimism. Outgoing
Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) said on Saturday he believes “cooler heads will prevail.” In case the parties bridge their disagreements, lawmakers might vote by “unanimous consent” without returning to Washington, he said. Trump has ramped up his criticism of Democrats, accusing them of forcing the US government to a standstill. “Shutdown today if Democrats do not vote for Border Security!” Trump tweeted on Friday, adding after McConnell refused to lower the threshold needed to pass the spending bill: “The Democrats
now own the shutdown!” Without the nuclear option, Republicans need 60 votes in the Senate to pass the legislation, while they only have 51 seats. Trump’s accusatory rhetoric is a U-turn from his statement last week. Meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, Trump said that he was “proud to shut down the government for border security.” “I will be the one to shut it down. I’m not going to blame you for it,” he said then.

Mattis to leave on Jan 1, deputy Shanahan to replace him
By Desert Star Staff Not willing to wait for the resigning US defense chief James Mattis to finish his term, President Donald Trump has announced that his deputy Patrick Shanahan will serve as acting defense secretary from January 1. Mattis resigned from Trump’s administration this week citing policy differences and offered to stay in his post for two more months until the

end of February. While Trump himself had confirmed the time frame, he has now made it clear Mattis will be out of the team quite a bit earlier. Reports and speculation emerged that the abrupt change was caused by Mattis’ resignation letter and the attention it received. Trump was irked by the letter, which implicitly criticized his policies and the decision to withdraw from Syria, and decided
to oust the Secretary of Defense immediately, Reuters
reported, citing a source. Shortly after the announcement, Trump revealed that he held telephone talks with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in which the two discussed “mutual involvement in Syria” and the “slow and highly coordinated pullout of US troops from the area.” Mattis’ resignation may signal further changes in US foreign policy, as he was one of the last “old school” officials sticking to “alliances and stability” to maintain the “US-led world order,” former Pentagon official Michael Maloof believes. Trump has come around and blown that all up. He looks at America first, while paying lip service to alliances such as NATO, but in reality, he wants
a strong America. Mattis did too, but in coordination with allies,” Maloof told RT, adding that such a stance on Trump’s part actually speeds up the emergence of a multipolar world, which ultimately further damages “US hegemony.” The departure of Mattis certainly won’t help Trump garner support among the military, Maloof believes, saying that it might even damage the morale of US troops. “He had a tremendous respect among the troops. I knew General Mattis – partially – and the respect that he engendered from the rank and file military was almost as though he was another General Patton,” he said. “I don’t think the military is going to be supportive of Donald Trump as a consequence.”

Dept. of Education to cancel $150 million in student loan debt NBC PS News Staff The U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday it would automatically cancel $150 million in student loans connected to for-profit colleges that closed in recent years. The move was made under an Obama-era policy that a federal judge in October essentially forced U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to implement. The story was first reported by Politico. The discharge of loans applies automatically to about 15,000 students who attended now-defunct colleges that closed between Nov. 1, 2013, and Dec. 4, 2018, according to the department’s announcement. About half of those affected attended Corinthian
Colleges, Inc., a chain that closed on April 27, 2015, the department stated. Other students who attended recently closed campuses or who believe they were otherwise defrauded can still apply to have their loans canceled, the department said. The office of Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. the ranking member of the Health, Labor, Education and Pensions Committee, said DeVos was “still trying to rewrite the underlying rule” that sparked the loan cancellations. In April, DeVos canceled memos published by the Department of Education under President Barack Obama that imposed tougher rules on how the federal government oversees student loan debt connected to for-
profit colleges. California and other states sued. Murray’s office said more than 100,000 students have outstanding claims against the institutions in question. “It’s disappointing that it took a court order to get Secretary DeVos to begin providing debt relief to students left in the lurch by predatory for-profit colleges,” Murray said, “but I am pleased the department has finally started implementing this rule and that some of the borrowers who attended schools like Corinthian Colleges and ITT Tech are finally getting their loans canceled. This is a good first step, but it’s not good enough.” Source: NBC Palm Springs

From CNN to Fox News, annoyed witches are taking on Trump
By Desert Star Staff It may be the season to be jolly but that’s not going to stop witches wanting to get a piece of the press pie to tell President Trump to stop using his beloved ‘witch hunt’ mantra. The community of wiccans are utilizing the festive season to share what means the most to them – and that’s criticizing Trump for using the offensive term ‘witch hunt’. Of course, the politically correct mainstream media has felt obliged to listen to their plight. The witches say Trump’s repeated use of the term throughout his presidency, and
most recently to describe the Russia investigation, fails to recognize the “worst period in our history,” according to witch Kitty Randall. If Mueller’s investigation were truly a ‘witch hunt,’ then Donald Trump would be hanging naked from chains in a cold barn somewhere, being tortured into admitting his pact with Satan, before being burned at the stake … Instead he’s golfing at Mara-Lago,” Randall adds. It appears their endeavor to clear the good name of witches has been somewhat of a success. Their plight has
been covered by CNN, The New York Post, USA Today, Fox News, The Daily Beast. Trump has reportedly used the phrase more than 60 times on Twitter alone, leading some witches – including this Brooklyn coven – to take the drastic step of casting a spell on the president. Some may not realize that Trump could in fact be referring to the McCarthyist sort of witch hunts rather than the actual bloody medieval practices, but then again, the 45th president is not always helping his critics with the context.
Portland Airport Workers Win Wage Raise
By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland International Airport workers have scored a major victory and will start receiving a minimum wage of $15 an hour starting in 2019. The wage increase from $12 to $15 will go to passenger service assistants, who transport passengers through the airport. Workers have been calling for a wage increase and better conditions for years, and held a day of action in October, in tandem with airport workers around the globe. Maggie Long is executive director of the Service Employees International Union – or SEIU – Local 49, which represents about 450 contracted PDX workers at different companies. She says these workers have struggled with poverty wages for years. “To be seeing a $3 wage increase is just going to have a profound impact on people’s lives,” says Long. “And so, very excited to see workers be able to move forward.” The wage increase brings PDX closer to other major U.S. airports. This year,

Gladys Hernandez, a passenger service assistant at Portland International Airport, says she has struggled to afford necessities while living on an hourly wage of $12. (SEIU Local 49) San Francisco approved raising contract workers’ minimum wage to $17 an hour, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey approved a $19 per-hour minimum wage for 40,000 workers at three airports that serve New York City. Gladys Hernandez is a passenger service assistant at PDX and says this victory wouldn’t have been
possible without the union. Hernandez says making $12 an hour, she’s had to make tough decisions between necessities like medicine and housing – and a $3 increase will make a big difference. “I was speaking with my husband, ‘We cannot pay the mortgage with $12 an hour!’ But 15? Yes, and we still can pay electricity. We can pay all the bills,” says Hernandez.
While hundreds of passenger service assistants will see a raise, Long says other workers, such as baggage handlers and aircraft cleaners, still are fighting for an increase. “Airlines continue to make record profits and workers who help fuel those flights, clean those flights, keep the airports running, need to not be left behind,” says Long.
Cuomo’s “Green New Deal” Draws Praise
Contracts for the first 800 megawatts of New York offshore wind power may be signed by June. (PTNorbert/Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff ALBANY, N.Y. Renewable-energy advocates are giving Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s “Green New Deal” high marks. Cuomo outlined his legislative agenda for the first 100 days of 2019 on Monday, including a call for addressing climate change by achieving 100 percent carbonfree electricity by 2040. New York’s clean-energy standard currently calls for 50 percent renewable energy by 2030. Joe Martens, director of the New York Offshore Wind Alliance, said that in the absence of federal leadership

on climate change, the governor consistently has set the bar higher for the state. “We think that’s exactly what New York has to do to lead the nation to get off of fossil fuels as rapidly as possible, and make the transfer to a clean-energy economy,” he said. Last January, the New York state Energy Research and Development Authority released an Offshore Wind Master Plan to develop 2,400 megawatts of offshore wind power by 2030. Proposals for constructing the first 800 megawatts of offshore wind are due
in February and contracts could be signed by June. Martens said a second procurement process could begin right away. “They’re very much on track for offshore wind,” he
said, “and their procurement schedule for land-based renewables has been also very much on track.” He noted that siting and construction of onshore wind farms has been slow, and the state is being urged to accelerate that process. However, some critics have said the governor has fallen far short of providing the funding needed to reach the goal of 50 percent renewables by 2030, let alone 100 percent a decade later. Martens said he thinks a detailed plan should be the next step in the process. “Hopefully, the administration in this 100 days is also going to spell out a plan so that we can accelerate renewables generally,” he said. “And now, having set this new goal, we’re confident that New York is actually going to get there and lead the nation.” More information is online at nyowa.org.

From Director Carlos Marques comes “Anchor and Hope” Continued from Page 1 which uses the money for film festival operations, and educational programs including the Palm Springs International ShortFest, presented each year in June for emerging filmmakers. ShortFest, has grown exponentially since its inception becoming the largest short film festival and film market in the world. In addition to the 130,000 visitors expected to attend the more than 200 movies and documentaries from 70 countries, there will be panel discussions, functions and events available over the 12 day festival. One of the highlights for the fans is the opportunity to see one their favorite stars walk the “Red Carpet” to the Gala Awards dinner on Thursday, December 3, 2019 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. This year’s Honorees listed alphabetically include: Timothee Chalamet, who receives the male actor Spotlight Award; Olivia Coleman, who receives the Desert Palm Achievement Award; Glenn Close, who receives The Icon Award; Ryan Coogler, who receives VARIETY’s Ten Directors’ to Watch Award; Bradley Cooper, who receives the Director of the Year Award; Alfonso Cuaron,

The best way to fully enjoy the event over the 12 day run is to be fully prepared. Everything begins with selections of the films you want to see. Schedules of films and their titles, short synopses, along with dates and time of each film or event are available free to the public. One can obtain a copy from the PSIFF Festival ticket and information center located at 777 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, Suite 113 from 9 AM to 7 PM Daily; or from any of the five screening venues in Palm Springs: The Camelot Theatres, The Regal 9, The Palm Canyon Theatre, The Annenberg Theatre, The Palm Springs High School’s Richards Auditorium and The Mary Pickford Theatre, in Cathedral City. Call them at 800-898-PALM (7256) or go online at: www. psfilmfest.org. to order your tickets. However, time is off the essence. Passes and tickets go very fast. The logistics of producing a major film festival, no matter where it’s being presented, is the result of hundreds of dedicated and committed
professionals and volunteers coming together to make the public’s movie going experience special. So remember to smile and thank them for their services. They usually smile right back. Also, I believe your festival experience will be enhanced and more enjoyable if you engage your fellow movie fans in ‘film talk’ conversations and your festival experience, while cueing in the various venue lines prior to the screening. It’s
a great way to find about films you haven’t scheduled to see but might be worth a look. One last tip. Make sure you layer your wearing apparel: Dress Warm. Remember it’s January. Jackets and/ or sweaters, even scarfs, will come in handy once the sun goes down in our desert paradise (about 5 PM). In any event prepare to expand your horizons. There’s a wide world out there. Enjoy! See you at the festival.
