Valley by promoting Healthy Living, Social responsibility and helps with Youth Development with programs designed for this purpose to make better citizens. There was a live auction of the limited edition of Dog Shit Tequila and a couple of Autographed guitars plus more. The auctioneer was Max von Wening who kept

Nina Simone and Rosetta Tharpe to be Inducted into Hall of Fame By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, - Verve Label Group and UMe are proud to announce the induction of trailblazers Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Late pianist, singer and activist Simone will be inducted into the 2018 Performer Category alongside Bon Jovi, The Cars and The Moody Blues, while Tharpe, the late singer and guitarist known as the “godmother of rock and roll,” will be inducted into the hall’s Early Influences wing, joining such luminaries as Billie Holiday, Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, Bessie Smith and

Howlin’ Wolf. The 33rd Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony takes place April 14, 2018 at Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. Known as the “High Priestess of Soul,” Nina Simone defies categorization. A pianist, singer, songwriter, composer and activist, she was one of the most gifted vocalists of her generation, an extraordinary artist of the twentieth century, an icon of American music. Rather than being confined to musical boundaries, she knew no bounds and fused jazz, blues, soul, folk, R&B, gospel, pop and showtunes with her classical roots, creating a rich

tapestry filled with emotional honesty, spiritual depth and virtuosic musicianship. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933, in Tryon, North Carolina, Simone took to music at an early age and begun playing piano at three years old. After graduating valedictorian of her high school class, her community raised money for a scholarship for her to study classical piano at Julliard in New York City. She left after the money ran out and applied to the prestigious Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where

Kyu Yang, Benjamin Lee and Steven Lee. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Career Builder Challenge Golf Tournament held its Media Day on Wednesday, December 13th. People involved in Media got the opportunity to play the PGA WEST Stadium Course that the Pro golfers will be playing. They are also informed about the upcoming changes made to the Career Builder Golf Tournament. These are some exciting new changes that they hope will bring more people to

the tournament. They are going to focus on children this year with special events just for kids. They hope to make it a fun family day. There will be no wristbands, and all people will be equal like a sponsor. There will be more significant access to see the golfers play and more seating at different holes. These are just a few of the new upgrades they plan to make to make it a better and more fun tournament for everyone. They announced Phil Mickelson will be coming back as host and will also be playing again this year. They said that Swafford, last year’s winner, will also be returning. He was unable to attend media day but did a live video feed where he answered

questions from the media. He responded that it makes a difference in your career after your 1st win. Other pro golfers told him to continue just to be himself and play your own game as before your success. He mentioned that PGA WEST is an incredible golf course and exceptionally well maintained. The weather is unbelievable, and the Career Builder is a great event. They also announced that some of the top names in golf would be playing this year

that included Mike Weir from Canada and a fan favorite John Daly who will be on his best behavior. Daly is always a fun golfer to watch. Another exciting announcement was the entertainment. Hewey Lewis and the News will be on Friday Night, and the GooGoo Dolls will play on Saturday. The concerts start at 4:30 so all people attending do not have to come back for this show. It is all part of the ticket and the day of golf.

Rubin introduced Richard Balocco from Desert ARC who spoke about the ARC and what it does. It started in 1959 and now serves over 700 clients. They have 30 buses to accommodate all those clients with transportation. Balocco has said he has been so lucky to be there ten years and has seen some fantastic stories of improvements in the clients and the growth of the ARC. Henry Farber of the Legends spoke to the guests and said they were just a bunch of old golfers that love this day. The event gets bigger every year, and more and more people want to get involved. Passion, Principle, & Purpose Goal Setting Principals By Janice Gough “You get in life what you tolerate” former Navy Seal, Mark Divine, said to us at a retreat I attended, which focused on creating an unbeatable mindset. This statement resonated with me. When I am honest with myself, I know there are things in my life I tolerate instead of saying “NO” and making a change, whether it is, health habits, relationships, or simply being lazy about something. Fighting those small battles requires us to put forth extra energy, and that is just hard sometimes. Working harder to say “No” eliminates wasted time so that we have that time to find success. As you reflect on the year ahead, I hope you have a great deal of hope and enthusiasm for achieving your goals, both professionally and personally. As you plan, consider the following framework, the BIG 3 Ps: passion, principle, purpose. I use it to help me find my starting point. Prioritizing Goals builds a successful bridge to success.

Think of it as the foundation for a large building you are planning to construct. Without the proper foundation, your structure will not be able to stand the test of time. Finding this starting point can be challenging at times, but it is necessary to not just achieve your goals, but blow past them. That is why we must start with the BIG 3 Ps as a filter for our goals. The big 3 Ps: Passion, Principal & Purpose

PASSION: Someone asked me recently, “How do you come up with new and fresh ideas for your business?” I told him I focus on what gets me fired up about the industry, the things that I feel I must share with potential prospects, and I encouraged him to be just as focused on discovering the something that he feels most passionate about. Amazingly, he called me back hours later with an entirely new business plan that was so laser focused that I believe it will ultimately reshape his year in 2018. Focus your Passion. PRINCIPLE: December 27, 2017

The world needs more businessmen and women to be making decisions with a principle-centered focus. I am not trying to preach or make a political stance. I simply do not know how someone can set a goal, achieve it, and then maintain that success unless it is grounded on universal principles, which is an alignment of our goals using absolute TRUTH. We do not devote enough effort and time to concerning ourselves with what the right thing to do is. PURPOSE: The most potent force is when an individual has a meaningful use in life. You have only two choices: Get on board or get out of the way. I like to think of it as handing a warrior a sword for battle. A sword is an object that lets people know the warrior is serious about his commitment and is not afraid to reveal it to further his purpose. Live a purpose-driven life. Make a commitment to yourself first, and then to others to help them achieve their goals, and watch your own life blessed in ways you could not have foreseen. Finally, here is the outline

that I use for planning my annual goals. Take the time to answer these questions as you prepare for a successful 2018. ANNUAL FOCUS PLAN FOR 2018: 1) The ONE most important thing for me to focus on. 2) Top 3 goals related to my ONE thing. 3) New habits to develop and integrate. 4) Partner to hold me accountable for my ONE thing. As always, I look forward to continuing to share different strategies that will help you grow your financial success. Janice Gough is a Financial Consultant in Palm Springs. 10 more countries could recognize Jerusalem as Israeli capital

By Desert Star Staff Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely has told a radio station that 10 more countries are considering recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital following the earlier declaration by Guatemala. Speaking to Kan Bet public radio, Hotovely said the 10 states are following the lead of Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, who Sunday declared the Guatemalan embassy would be moved to Jerusalem. The Central American country, along with six other states, voted with the US and Israel in contrast to the rest of the UN General Assembly which last week voted 128-9 to condemn the US decision to recognize Jerusalem. The other six countries were Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo. Hotovely did not name any of the 10 countries, but said many had a strong Christian tradition. Philippines, the Czech Republic and Romania

abstained from the UN vote last week, but have entertained the possibility of joining Guatemala and the United States. Czech President Milos Zeman supports the move to Jerusalem. But European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini later said the Czech foreign minister had promised not to move their embassy to Jerusalem, which the EU considers the capital of a future Palestinian state. Earlier Monday, Netanyahu thanked Morales in a speech at the Israeli parliament. “I spoke yesterday with my friend the Guatemalan president, and thanked him for his support of us through his vote in the UN,” he said in the Knesset. “I expressed my hope that he will follow President Trump’s footsteps and recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and will begin the process of moving the embassy to there. That night he released an announcement that he would in fact do so. So, I want to say, from here, to the president of

Guatemala: May God bless you, my friend, and may God bless our countries.” Guatemala’s decision, however, was criticized by Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi as “an absurd provocation [and] violation of international law.” Despite repeated warnings by global and regional powers, including Russia, US President Donald

Trump declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel on December 6 and announced his country’s embassy would be moving there from Tel Aviv, triggering widespread condemnation. Following the announcement, massive anti-Israeli and anti-American protests erupted across the Muslim world. The most intense clashes have been in

Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza, as Palestinians rallied angrily against the decision and militant group Hamas urging a new uprising, or intifada. More than 10 people have been killed and hundreds injured as Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons to suppress the protests.

Haley hails $285mn cut to UN budget

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley delivers remarks at the Security Council meeting © Stephanie Keith / Reuters By Desert Star Staff Cutting the “bloated” UN budget by $285 million next year is a “big step in right direction,” according to US envoy Nikki Haley. The news comes after reports from the UN that some critical aid programs were underfunded this year. The US Mission to the United Nations announced on Sunday that it had secured a major curb in the global organization’s budget for 2018 and 2019. Commenting on the announcement, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said the cut would end benefits the international community has gained from “American generosity.” Washington “reduced the UN’s bloated management and support functions, bolstered support for key US priorities throughout the world, and instilled more discipline and accountability

throughout the UN system,” reads a statement from the US mission. According to Haley, “the inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known.” Washington will no longer “let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked.” “This historic reduction in spending – in addition to many other moves toward a more efficient and accountable UN – is a big step in the right direction,” the ambassador asserted. The US has long contributed the biggest share to UN funds, which in 2017 amounted to 22 percent of the organization’s $5.4 billion two-year regular budget. The regular budget is separate from the UN funds allocated for its global peacekeeping operations, which cost the organization

$7.8 billion in 2017 alone. The contributions are agreed upon by the 193-member UN General Assembly and are assessed by considering the size of a country’s economy and other factors, including GDP and the national income. The Trump administration repeatedly made it clear that contributions to the UN budget could soon be limited to much smaller sums. Haley, who previously served as the governor of South Carolina,

function allow for greater engagement and real-life application in the classroom. Taking it Down: Notetaking, a once manual often disordered endeavor, has gotten a facelift thanks to the modern age. New desktop and mobile apps make it easier

for students to organize, sort and share notes, as well as quickly reference them later when it’s time to cram for that exam. Many platforms offer free basic accounts, with the option of upgrading for more features. However, doing so may come with a subscription

fee, which may be worth it depending on a student’s note-taking style and needs. Keeping up with the classmates is often like keeping up with the Joneses. Having the latest educational tools can mean a better learning experience. StatePoint

treatment for cancer. The data indicates positive effects on parents, including improved communication within families as well as between parents and medical staff, which can lead to better medical care, and reductions in their levels of stress, specifically as it relates to their emotional functioning. “This study advances our understanding of the benefits of the vital bond

shared between people and animals,” said principal investigator and American Humane National Director of Humane Research Dr. Amy McCullough. “We believe the findings may further increase access to therapy animals in hospital environments, enhance therapy dog training and practice, and improve well-being outcomes for families facing the challenges of childhood cancer.” For decades, there have been tantalizing stories about the power of animals to bring comfort and help in the face of illness. And while studies have suggested the benefits of AAT, the majority of these findings have largely been anecdotal and have lacked scientific rigor, thus hindering the ability of AAT to be recognized by those in the research, funding and healthcare fields as a sound treatment option. Additional key research gaps – such as the impact of AAT on therapy animals – also exist, which rendered AAT best practices incomplete. In 2010 American Humane researchers, with funding from

Zoetis, began the Canines and Childhood Cancer (CCC) Study to rigorously measure the effects of AAT for children with cancer, their parents, and the therapy dogs who visit them. Additional funds to study the effect of therapeutic visits on the therapy dogs themselves were received through a grant from the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) Foundation. American Humane created a three-stage scientific study with a comprehensive Needs Assessment (launched in 2010): The research team conducted a comprehensive literature review to determine the current state of research in the fields of animal-assisted therapy and pediatric oncology, as well as focus groups and interviews with pediatric oncology patients, parents of children with cancer, hospital staff, and animal-handlers who visit with their therapy dogs in pediatric healthcare settings. Collectively, these findings shaped the rationale and ultimate goals of the study, culminating in the full clinical trial.

Therapy Dogs Provide Significant Benefits to Families

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, - Dogs have long been called Mankind’s best friend, but a major new scientific study now indicates that a dog may also be a family’s best friend in times of their greatest need. Following seven years of pioneering research, American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, revealed the results of its long-awaited “Canines and

Childhood Cancer Study,” the first and largest randomized, controlled clinical trial to rigorously measure the effects of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) in the field of pediatric oncology. The results, published today in the Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing, furnish evidence that regular visits from a therapy dog can provide significant psychosocial benefits to families of children undergoing

A New Year’s Resolution Option to Slow Climate Change

Scientists say if people across the globe switched to a diet full of nuts, beans, fish and less meat, global warming could be reduced by up to 15 percent by 2050. (Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff DENVER – As the New Year approaches, many Americans will be focusing on what resolutions they’ll make to do things differently in 2018. Climate scientists at the University of California at Davis say one option is to help slow climate change by adopting a low-emissions diet. Maya Almaraz, a postdoctoral researcher at the university, says while people

may feel helpless when it comes to an issue as large as a warming planet, the data show that personal decisions really can have a big impact. “We make food choices every day,” she points out. “It’s an individual choice, so you may make them based on how you want to look or what you want your health to be. Or you can choose to make them based on how you want to impact the planet.”

Almaraz says the single biggest move you can make, in terms of diet to reduce methane and carbon pollution, is by putting less meat on your plate. She points out by eating fish instead of steak, you’ll produce an eight-fold reduction in emissions, and switching to beans or lentils drops your footprint to almost zero. Almaraz adds that the good news is you don’t have to

go vegan to make a difference. She suggests instead of eating meat twice a day, try cutting that down to once a day. She contends if enough people reduce their meat consumption, that decision alone could offset the emissions from all cars on the road today. She explains every step that goes into meat production has an impact on global warming. “When you produce a hamburger, what that takes is a lot of feed for those cows, so that requires a lot of land,” she states. “Cut down some forests, you grow corn, you grow oats, you grow barley – that requires a lot of fertilizer.” Almaraz recommends trying out the so-called Mediterranean diet, which includes lots of nuts, beans, fish, but also chicken once a week and red meat once a month. In addition to lowering your risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, she says a global adoption of a Mediterranean diet could help cut global warming by up to 15 percent by 2050.

Building a Self-Sufficient Food System for the Santee Sioux By Desert Star Staff LINCOLN, Neb. – Imagine having to travel 100 miles in order to get fresh, affordable food to your family’s dinner table. That’s life for a majority of Nebraska’s Santee Sioux, as the nearest full service grocery store is an hour away. A report from the Center for Rural Affairs examines this problem, as well as other barriers to food access. Wyatt Fraas, assistant director of the Center’s Farm and Community Program, says that includes poverty and a lack of jobs. “The Santee Reservation is like many reservations in the country and in fact, many rural communities where income is low and unemployment is high,” he points out. “So, having the money for food or for transportation to get food is a problem for many people.” Since 2015, the Center has worked with the Santee Sioux Reservation to research the food system and develop strategies to help the community move toward food sovereignty. Its report suggests increased public education, as well as creating better access points for local foods, such as mobile grocery stores, grocery co-ops and food hubs. Fraas says interest in creating a self-reliant food system is growing among the Santee. “After a few years of this garden and market activity people are becoming more aware of the possibilities of what they can do for www.desertstarweekly.com

The Santee Sioux tribe in Nebraska is creating community gardens and other access points for local foods. (CFRA) themselves,” he relates. “This project and this report also help people to identify what they could do looking forward to improve the situation longer-term.” Fraas says there are also efforts to connect producers of locally grown foods to institutions on the reservation that already provide food

to community members as part of their services. “Senior housing, the Women, Infant and Children’s program, and the health center also has other special programs where they provide food or meals,” he states. “All those things could be really directed at providing particularly healthful, nutritious, fresh foods

that are not really part of those programs at this point.” The report also suggests changes to land-use policies. The majority of Santee Sioux Nation cropland is rented to non-tribal farmers, and Fraas says the tribe could repurpose a portion of it as a cornerstone of a healthful, local food system.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

The new year takes you on many new adventures, twists & turns, providing multiple and unusual eventful experiences that at first surprise then reveal to you your depth of intelligence and creative imagination. You will want to bring these forth into the world, become entrepreneurial, create new structures that are part of the new economy. All things profound will shake your present world.

TAURUS Remembering all previous intimate relationships may occur the next three weeks. It’s good to assess what was gained, what worked, what didn’t and how your belief systems (patterns learned when you were small) affected the outcomes. Something special is or will be occurring on inner levels. Perhaps it’s that you understand how love works. And you begin to “love more.” Receiving & giving.

GEMINI Your life direction comes into focus along with who you want to be in the new year. These are very important considerations. Sometimes we don’t know what life has in store for us. It’s a surprise, directed by the need to share and serve. Sometimes we can’t visualize the future because it’s not formed yet. What are you striving

DECEMBER 27 – JANUARY 2, 2018 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

toward? With whom? What environments would reflect you? What do you love?

CANCER Unusual fears may appear in your emotional body. Inform them they are not welcome. Others can assist you if you share with them your difficulties. Fear can become addictive, looping over and over in the lower mind, bringing us to our knees metaphorically. If there is lamentation and grief, allow them. But fear is simply based on non-information. What are you seeking to know?

LEO Daily work and agendas, interactions with co-workers will be the focus. Something from the past appears and through intentions for right relations you create a state of cooperation that heals and harmonizes. Home life feels changed. A previous restrictive attitude from someone is difficult. Eventually this must be faced lest something is lost forever. Schedules shift constantly. You adapt.

VIRGO It’s good to know there’s a difference between what makes you happy and what makes others happy. They are not the same. It’s a service within ourselves when we ask, with interest, what makes another person happy, soothed, comforted and cared

for. When we understand this, we might sacrifice our own comfort. Should we do so, joy replaces discomfort and happiness is ours.

LIBRA The following issues will be on your mind through the next months. Your mother your nurturing capabilities; relationships with children; where and how you live; family life, and the quality of nurturing given and received. Realize conflict is a call for the next level of harmony to appear. Therefore, patiently and with kindness, work through all conflicts. What you think you want may not be available. Something greater appears.

SCORPIO What is the status of your car? Does it need repairs or tuned-up? Do you need a new car? What things need upgrading? Are there people you must contact, tasks, bills and correspondences waiting for your attention? Whatever must be done, accomplish it slowly, with care and attention, giving yourself more time than usual. At the end of the day, reviewing the day, see that the day was good.

SAGITTARIUS Previous financial situations unable to be considered ‘til now have your attention. With all monetary actions, check and recheck the amounts for there could be

errors. It will be important to re-evaluate spending. I think you have many valuable items, which could be sold so you can purchase needed things and have more capital to work with. You have entered the environment you have envisions to build. There’s more to come.

CAPRICORN You ponder upon how others perceive you. Realize you have leadership abilities. In the next year, you will be of aware a new self-identity emerging. Do not allow criticism to undermine your (or anyone’s) goodness. There may be a challenge between your love of self and your critical judgmental self. Someone may activate this. You flourish in a group of like-minded people. Your heart opens to learning, sharing and giving.

AQUARIUS Several times in our lives we have spiritual experiences that lead us to reassess life’s purpose and our individual purpose within life itself. We refine and re-define, we ask for and seek justice, often blinded, often hidden unless we look beneath the surface of accepted reality. Ethics become important. What are your ethics? What actually are ethics? Remember at all times to radiate Goodwill. It creates ethics.

PISCES

Reassessing friendships and social interactions, future goals, hopes, wishes, dreams and aspirations will be your currents of thought in the coming year. Whenever we feel tension and longing, know a new need is appearing. What are your desires and aspirations? They direct us toward our future. Draw them, paint & write about them daily. Then a magnetic field of attraction appears around you. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. she was denied entrance, something Simone always felt was racially motivated. Determined to make a living playing music, she began to perform in bars in Atlantic City where she played jazz standards and was required to sing. Word quickly spread and at the age of twenty-four she scored her first record deal. Simone recorded more than 40 albums, beginning in 1957 with her debut Little Girl Blue, featuring “I Loves You Porgy,” which became a Top 10 hit in the U.S. By the mid1960s, Simone had become known as a main voice for the Civil Rights Movement as her music began to reflect the tumultuous times. Rights-era material, including her explosive rendition of “Mississippi Goddam.” This period also saw her satisfy her relentlessly questing muse, with collections that focused on Broadway showtunes (Broadway-Blues-Ballads), pop material (I Put A Spell On You) and more, showing the full range of Simone’s talents. Pitchfork hailed these recordings, which include classics “Feeling Good,” “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” “I Put A Spell On You,” “Sinnerman” and “Four Women,” as “some of the most important, moving documents of American history.” Since her death in 2003, Simone’s influence, significance and cultural relevance has only grown, especially most recently as issues of race, police brutality and civil rights are once again at the forefront of the cultural conversation. The feature documentary, “What Happened, Miss Simone?” — which won the 2016 Emmy for Outstanding Documentary

—helped shine a new light on Simone’s immense talents and fearless activism, resulting in a new generation discovering her timeless music and indelible impact. Simone’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame serves as a recognition of her influence and contributions to the world of music. Upon the news of her induction, Rolling Stone wrote, “no artist has been more overdue for recognition than Sister Rosetta Tharpe, adding, “A queer black woman from Arkansas who shredded on electric guitar, belted praises both to God and secular pleasures, and broke the color line touring with white singers, she was gospel’s first superstar, and she most assuredly rocked.” Born March 20, 1915 in Cotton Plant, Arkansas, Tharpe defied expectations from an early age as a guitar prodigy. southerners heading north. They settled in Chicago where young Rosetta encountered the music that migrants had brought with them - blues from the Mississippi delta and jazz from New Orleans. She began performing gospel music as Little Rosetta Nubin with her mother at churches as part of a traveling Baptist roadshow. By the time she was in her 20s, she was a seasoned

performer whose distinctive voice and unconventional style, filled with her signature feverish electric guitar playing, attracted many fans. As the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame said, “She is the founding mother who gave rock’s founding fathers the idea,” declaring, “No one deserves more to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.” www.desertstarweekly.com

Protect Yourself from Wildfire Smoke

By Desert Star Staff Dry conditions in parts of the United States increase the potential for wildfires in or near wilderness areas. Stay alert for wildfire warnings and take action to protect yourself and your family from wildfire smoke. When wildfires burn in your area, they produce smoke that may reach your community. Wildfire smoke is a mixture of gases and fine particles from burning trees and other plant materials. This smoke can hurt your eyes, irritate your respiratory system, and worsen chronic

heart and lung diseases. Who is at greatest risk from wildfire smoke? • People who have heart or lung diseases, like heart disease, chest pain, lung disease, or asthma, are at higher risk from wildfire smoke. • Older adults are more likely to be affected by smoke. This may be due to their increased risk of heart and lung diseases. • Children are more likely to be affected by health threats from smoke. Children’s airways are still developing and they breathe more air per

pound of body weight than adults. Also, children often spend more time outdoors engaged in activity and play. Stay alert for wildfire warnings. Take precautions to decrease risk from wildfire smoke. • Take steps to decrease your risk from wildfire smoke. • Check local air quality reports. Listen and watch for news or health warnings about smoke. Find out if your community provides reports about the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Air

Quality Index (AQI) or check the report on AirNow.gov. In addition, pay attention to public health messages about safety measures. • Consult local visibility guides. Some communities have monitors that measure the amount of particles in the air. In the western United States, some states and communities have guidelines to help people determine if there are high levels of particulates in the air by how far they can see. • Keep indoor air as clean as possible if you are advised to stay indoors. Keep windows and doors closed. Run an air conditioner, but keep the fresh-air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent outdoor smoke from getting inside. If you do not have an air conditioner and it is too warm to stay inside with the windows closed, seek shelter in a designated evacuation center or away from the affected area. • Avoid activities that increase indoor pollution. Burning candles, fireplaces, or gas stoves can increase indoor pollution. Vacuuming stirs up particles already inside your home, contributing to indoor pollution. Smoking also puts even more pollution into the air.

• Prevent wildfires from starting. Prepare, build, maintain and extinguish campfires safely. Follow local regulations if you burn trash or debris. Check with your local fire department to be sure the weather is safe enough for burning. • Follow the advice of your doctor or other healthcare provider about medicines and about your respiratory management plan if you have asthma or another lung disease. Consider evacuating if you are having trouble breathing. Call your doctor for advice if your symptoms worsen. • Do not rely on dust masks for protection. Paper “comfort” or “dust” masks commonly found at hardware stores are designed to trap large particles, such as sawdust. These masks will not protect your lungs from the small particles found in wildfire smoke. • Evacuate from the path of wildfires. Listen to the news to learn about current evacuation orders. Follow the instructions of local officials about when and where to evacuate. Take only essential items with you. Follow designated evacuation routes– others may be blocked–and plan for heavy traffic.

It suggests sales could grow even more next year. Legal pot sales could increase by another 45 percent in 2018, the latest annual report by Marijuana Business Daily said. The publication, a trade news website for professionals in the recreational and medical cannabis industry in the US, further forecasts that legal weed sales in America could quadruple between 2016 and 2021, with the marijuana market eventually hitting highs of $17 billion in sales

As sales figures rise, so too the debate around its legalization. It’s no longer a taboo topic as the number of people supporting such a move swells in the US. According to Gallup’s October 2017 annual survey on cannabis, as many as 64 percent of respondents said they want to see pot legalized, an all-time record, according to some media outlets. The number of weed legalization supporters in the US has grown by almost 40 percent since 1995, when California became the first US state to legalize marijuana for medicinal use. TOYA Releases “My Snowy Journey” on Minecraft Marketplace

In 2018, TOYA will release a series of adventure games inspired by extraordinary women from Brazil, By Desert Star Staff TEL AVIV, Israel, - There’s a new Minecraft game from the Israeli start-up company TOYA, which develops games for girlempowerment. “My Snowy Journey” is an awe-inspiring trip up Mt. Everest where players follow in the footsteps of and are assisted by the first woman ever to reach the summit, Japanese climber Junko Tabei. “Junko Tabei was an amazing woman,” said TOYA CEO Anat Shperling. “Although at the start of her career she had no help from her government

or male mountaineers, she climbed not only Mt. Everest but the Seven Summit peaks – the highest mountains on seven continents.” “As a role model for the millions of gamers playing Minecraft, especially girls, Junko is very special. She did things her own way, resisting and overcoming all obstacles. We were inspired by her personal passion for climbing, and created a game that enables you to climb Mt. Everest while experiencing fun and challenging gameplay.”

“My Snowy Journey” takes players up the mountain through a series of challenges, including three giant ice walls that increase in difficulty. With tools and the help of Whysa, a rather unpredictable old lady who appears in every TOYA game, gamers interact with Junko and each other as they climb to the top – where, like real mountaineers, they can leave their own permanent messages. The game is available for purchase at http://bit.ly/2Bv1PNW “Making Everest look like its gigantic self, while not intimidating young gamers, was a design challenge we had to overcome,” said Yifat Anzelevich, TOYA’s COO. “We wanted girls to experience the immense, icy world of Everest while understanding how Junko’s personal approach of not being intimidated by the mountain was what enabled her to master it!” TOYA was founded by Shperling and Anzelevich, women entrepreneurs, to create a brand of digital games and media designed to inspire and motivate young girls to realize their full potential, and expose

boys to the accomplishments of women who changed our world. The small start-up is developing new Minecraft games designed to be an alternative to the typical “pink” games about fashion, pets and homecare targeted to grade-school-age girls. The games are important for boys, too: research indicates that there is only one female for every five male characters in video games, and 76% of solo video game heroes are male, despite the fact that half of online gamers are female. The Minecraft games’ playful learning experience enables gamers to become explorers, adventurers and all sorts of heroes through experiencing the accomplishments of exceptional women from around the world. The company’s first Minecraft game, inspired by the work of renowned gorilla researcher Dian Fossey, was released in November. “My Snowy Journey” will be featured on Microsoft’s “12 Days of Minecraft” and its skin pack will be available to play for free on December 29th. The game will be available for purchase starting December 19th. Toya is one of Microsoft’s few Minecraft

content-creator partners and is the only one developing games that focus on phenomenal women achievers around the world. Most of the games include subtle encouragement for players to develop and use STEM skills, from understanding animal biology to figuring out the geology of mountain-climbing. Minecraft itself is a gaming phenomenon, with a user base of more than 130 million gamers around the world, 40% of whom are female. The game’s popularity is rooted in its creative, non-violent approach, and in its graphics, both the users and their surroundings are made out of blocks, allowing unlimited choices in representation and creating new worlds. “From the textures and colors of this game to the ability to join an online “community” of gamers who have completed the game successfully, ‘My Snowy Journey’ is a unique addition to the Minecraft universe,” Shperling said. “It’s another landmark for the TOYA approach: fun and interesting but with the serious purpose of empowering girls around the world.”

2018 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS | FINANCES

Create an Emergency Fund E

veryone knows emergencies happen. They are sometimes completely out of our hands, but we are in control of how they affect us financially. Having an emergency fund will create less of an impact on your wallet when these instances arise.

When things are going well, it can be easy to forget that the machines you rely on will sometimes need expensive repairs. If your automobile suddenly requires attention from a mechanic, will you have the funds to cover the costs? Will you have means of spare transportation in case the repair takes several days to complete? Also, think of the appliances in your home that keep you comfortable and make it easy to survive. Heating and air conditioning repairs can be extremely expensive and dangerous to your health if you are without these vital services during the peaks of summer or winter temperatures. Medical bills also can cripple a budget if you don’t properly save. It is critical to the financial well-being of your family that you build a nest egg for these situations.

GETTING STARTED If you are one of the estimated 48 percent of Americans who live paycheck to paycheck, an emergency fund is especially crucial. Experts at the Smart About Money organization say that households with emergency savings below $500 are more prone to worry. They recommend your savings goal should reach this number at

the beginning. Once you hit your $500 goal, analyze how long it took to you achieve it and challenge yourself to double it in less time. You will ultimately want a fund to cover at least three months of living expenses. This is because that’s the

average amount of time it takes someone who lost their job to find a new one.

EASY WAYS TO SAVE Saving can be difficult. That’s why it is important to put the money directly into a savings account before you

2018 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS | FITNESS

have access to it. Ask your employer about direct depositing a portion of your check into an account you don’t have instant access to, such as a savings account. Putting this money away immediately is a great way to plan your budget without

including it. You might even use technology to assist in your savings. Many apps round up to the nearest dollar of purchase you make and put the remaining change in your savings account. You will notice it adding up quickly.

Join a Gym H

ow many times has “getting in shape” made it onto your New Year’s resolution list? It’s one of the most popular decrees made by Americans each year.

Unfortunately, it’s easier said than done. Joining a local gym is a great way to keep motivated by using state-of-the-art workout equipment and encouragement from other members. This year, don’t only promise yourself that you’re going to start a workout routine — stick to it. Don’t be discouraged if results are not immediate. They will take time and determination. Once you start seeing the differences, you will probably find yourself making other healthy decisions throughout the year.

EXERCISE BENEFITS Many people choose to exercise because of the effects it has on their waistline. Being comfortable with your body is a great way to boost confidence and promote positivity. But what about the good things happening beneath your skin? These benefits are just as important, as exercise and a healthy lifestyle help your vital organs function at their full potential. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report some beneficial ways exercise impacts your health. • Reducing cardiovascular disease: Performing at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity can lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. These are the two leading causes of death in

12

America. • Lower cancer risks: It has been shown that being physically active lowers your risk of colon and breast cancer. • Stronger bones: Musclestrengthening exercises can slow the loss of bone density that comes with age.

CHOOSING A GYM When deciding on the facility that will host your new healthy lifestyle, there are a few factors you should consider. How far are you willing to travel? Most people will benefit from a gym close to home or their workplace. If it is easily accessible, there will be fewer chances of making excuses to avoid going. Does the gym have the equipment you plan to use? Make sure the facility has a good blend of cardio- and strength-conditioning equipment on hand. Is staff medically trained? In case of a cardiac event or an accident while you are working out, make sure the staff is properly prepared to assist you.

GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED Some gyms feature a referral program that might save you some big bucks and score a family member a great deal. Having a workout companion also can make it easier to commit to your routine.

2018 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS | BREAKING BAD HABITS

M

Eliminate Alcohol

any Americans celebrate the end of another calendar by indulging in alcohol with family or friends. When drinking responsibly, people typically won’t experience serious complications. However, if it becomes part of your routine, it is time to take steps to eliminate alcohol altogether before it takes hold on your daily life.

Alcoholism may be carried in our genes, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. If you know of someone in your family who has become trapped by this dangerous addiction, it’s important to know you’re at a higher risk of developing it. Even those who have no family history of alcohol abuse can become dependent.

BEGIN ON NEW YEAR’S EVE If you intend to be serious about ditching alcohol consumption in your life, New Year’s Eve is a great day to start. A day that is known for drinking and outlandish parties is a good time to avoid alcohol. The Mothers Against Drunk Drivers organization reports that New Year’s Day is the most dangerous day of the year for drunk driving on our nation’s roadways. Keep yourself and your body safe by staying in and enjoying the holiday with loved ones.

HOW ALCOHOL HURTS YOUR HEALTH You might be unaware of the toll excessive drinking can take on your body. Here are some conditions you might experience as reported by the NIAAA. Heart problems: You will

be more at risk for serious heart conditions such as high blood pressure, stroke and cardiomyopathy. • Liver: Constant drinking can cause serious damage to your liver. Some common conditions are fibrosis, cirrhosis and alcoholic hepatitis. • Cancer risks: Excessive

drinking raises the risks of mouth, esophagus, liver and breast cancers. • Immune system: Heavy drinking can lessen your body’s ability to ward off infections. Pneumonia and tuberculosis are just two diseases that are more easily developed in alcoholics.

IF YOU NEED HELP If eliminating alcohol from your lifestyle doesn’t seem to be a feasible option, it’s time to get help. Be honest with your health professional about the amount you drink to find out what your best options are. According to the NIAAA,

sometimes medication and counseling is all it takes for some people to stop. If drinking has overtaken your life, you might be referred to a rehabilitation program. You can reach the American Addiction Center 24 hours a day at 888-6351745.

Resolutions for Kids

dult resolutions often include reducing behaviors that can result in serious-health consequences and improving oneself. This year, make fun resolutions for your children and make a deal to keep them as a family.

• Being pet friendly: It is hard for children to understand that certain pets aren’t as durable as they are. Promote friendly interactions between your child and family animals, especially if there are fragile puppies or kittens in the home.

OLDER CHILDREN The AAP states that children ages 5 through 12 are more likely to comprehend a resolution and participate in the process of choosing one. This age group will benefit from these important resolutions. • Drink more milk: Calcium is an important part of your child’s developing body, so make it a point to consume more and lower the intake of sugary drinks. • Wear a seatbelt: As soon as a child gets in your vehicle, he should buckle up without being asked. This is a great habit for children to have. • Being kind to others: Bullying is a sad reality in the world, especially for adolescents. They can promise to be kind to their peers and report any type of abuse they see at school.

As a family, sit down and reflect on the past year. Highlight positive moments and goals everyone has reached. Then you can decide together on what you want to accomplish for the approaching year. Teach your children how improving themselves will result in great things. These lessons will last with them into adulthood.

TODDLERS You should start instilling healthy resolutions in your child at a young age. Though he might not understand the importance, it will set a good foundation as he begins to grow. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics, these are some great resolutions to make for preschool-aged children: • Become better listeners: This will be helpful for children and amazing for parents.

BE A ROLE MODEL © FOTOLIA

Your child will commit to listening when Mom or Dad asks her to do something. Help her understand by keep-

ing tasks simple. Ask her to pick up her toys or finish a meal for starters. • Good hygiene: Toddlers

love making a mess. Resolving to wash their hands often and accepting the fact that bath time is coming are great ideas.

Whichever resolution your family chooses, make sure you are being a good role model by following up on the promises you made to yourself and family. Working together to keep your resolutions is a great bonding experience with your children.

Doctors: Holiday Depression Is Real and Treatable

Stress can take the sparkle out of the holidays. (davidpwhelan/morguefile) By Desert Star Staff CHEBOYGAN, Mich. – While images of joy and celebration fill storefronts, magazines and TV screens this time of year, the reality of the holidays isn’t always

so cheerful, and experts say avoiding holiday traps and knowing where to find help are critical. Whether it’s the stress of an overbooked calendar, feelings of isolation or the

By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – As a grant manager for the Idaho Children’s Trust Fund, Taryn Yates considers the wellbeing of children in a host of trying situations. More than 17 percent of Idaho children are living in poverty; others face unstable home lives as parents struggle with mental illness or addiction. When decorating her house for the holidays this year, Yates caught herself staring at a sign that read “comfort and joy,” and wondered how often people think about what those words really mean - and what it what it would take to make them a reality for Idaho kids. “If Santa Claus could come and just grant that for everyone, what would they look like?” she queries. “What would they have? And I kind of started

unpacking that in my head; it just really made me think about what we can do as community members to actually bring that reality to people.” Yates says it’s easy - and human - to get wrapped up in your own family when you have a roof over your head and feel comfortable, and admits it’s something she, as a busy mom, does too. But she notes the holidays are the perfect time of year to think about families who are struggling and decide on ways to help. What can community members do to support people in need? Yates suggests starting with your inner circle. “Maybe I can reach out to my neighbors and see if they need any help,” she adds. “Do they need cookies? Do they need a babysitter? And then beyond that,

financial pressures of the gifting season, the holidays take a mental and physical toll on many people in Michigan. Dr. Loretta Leja, M.D., a family physician who practices in Cheboygan, says what may

start as the “holiday blues” can leave people in a downward spiral if left unchecked. “(They’re) more likely to get sick, they’re more likely to have poor judgment, they will start losing sleep, it will then sometimes snowball into a worsening depression,” she says. Leja recommends setting realistic expectations for the holidays, paying close attention to food and alcohol intake, and maintaining selfcare routines such as exercise. She encourages anyone feeling especially overwhelmed or losing interest in activities they would normally enjoy, to contact their family physician or primary-care doctor, who can properly assess and discuss the treatment options available, many of which she stresses do not necessarily involve medication. Leja, who is the current

president of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians, says doctors like her, who are trained to treat the whole family, from infants to adults, can be very helpful during difficult times, since they have the benefit of knowing their patients’ extended history and family dynamics. “Because I know them, I can help bring in social contacts and determine whether a little bit of counseling will help them pull out of it, or if it is more serious and will require medication, and then I will be there to make sure things are improving,” she adds. Given Michigan’s climate, people who still feel down after the holidays are over could be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, which Leja says should also be discussed with a physician, since treatment options are available.

Finding Ways to Fill Holidays with ‘Comfort and Joy’ for ID Family

Families living in relative comfort should take some time to think about those in need this holiday season, says Taryn Yates of the Idaho Children’s Trust Fund. (emz993/Pixabay) extended family members - and just kind of extending that warmth and generosity on as much as you can.” Yates says her big idea is

manageable - if everyone did what they could to help the families around them, there would be enough helping hands to make a big difference

in the lives of children. She originally shared these ideas in a column in the Idaho Falls Post Register, where she is a regular contributor.

a big, big impact on people’s physical health, as well as their mental well-being.” According to U.S. Census data, more than one in four Americans lives alone, and more than 8 million older adults experience social isolation. Recent research from Brigham Young University found that loneliness is on the rise, and may represent a greater public health hazard than obesity. On the positive side, the AARP survey also found that 67 percent of adults feel happy when they think about spending time with family and friends during the holidays. More than a third of people surveyed said they experience more kindness from strangers

during the holidays, which also provide more opportunities to connect with people. Lacock points to the website Connect2Affect.org, which features tools and resources to help evaluate isolation risk, and offers practical ways to reconnect with the community. “Do the little things,” he adds. “If you can knock on the door, you know – just ‘take their temperature’ from time to time, see how they’re doing, how they’re feeling – and include them in any small social gatherings that you can. A little bit goes a long way at this time of year.” Older Americans might lead more solitary lives, but they’re not necessarily more lonely. BYU researchers found loneliness is actually at its peak among teenagers and young adults.

Survey: Loneliness a Top Concern Around Holidays

people associate the holidays with warm and positive

feelings, but for others, it can be a lonely and difficult time. An AARP Foundation survey found that 31 percent of adults 18 and older say they have felt lonely during the holiday season in the past five years, and 41 percent worry about a family member or friend. Tom Lacock, associate state director of AARP Wyoming, points out that strong social connections are key to physical and mental health. “Social isolation is more than just someone feeling a little bit lonely,” he explains. “Research has shown that the health impact of prolonged isolation is the equivalent of smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. The last known dancing bears in Nepal rescued

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, - A dramatic rescue of two tortured sloth bears took place overnight in Nepal on December 19 by the Jane Goodall Institute of Nepal, with support from World Animal Protection and Nepali police. These are the last two known Nepali-owned illegal ‘dancing bears.’ Like so many

performing animals, Rangila, a 19-year-old male, and Sridevi, a 17-year-old female, were sold to their owner to be used as dancing bears – a cruel, outlawed practice where bears are made to “dance” as entertainment for crowds of people. Bears like Rangila and Sridevi are snatched from their mother at an early age and

forced to perform. Their owner had pierced their nose with a burning hot rod and shoved a rope through it – to retain control of the large animals. Harsh training methods are then used in order to make them submissive enough to perform for tourists. With the help of local police, the bears were found in Iharbari, Nepal via

New Benefits and Insurance Options You Can Expect in 2018

By Desert Star Staff Ever wondered whether your insurance policy was actually working for you? You may be in luck, as your insurance plan may start to follow the same trends being adopted in other industries: simpler, more convenient and personalized products – all supported by the latest mobile technology. This year, Stephanie Shields, a product marketing and development expert from Aflac, (Aflac herein means American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus and American Family Life Assurance Company of New York) says that policyholders can expect these “value-added services” to become less of a nice-tohave and more of a given: • Telemedicine: Consulting with a physician and getting treatment online offers greater flexibility and may become essential to busy people. • Fraud protection: Identity theft is likely top of mind for policyholders and businesses. Expect to see better fraud protection, including ongoing internet monitoring and full identity restoration after a data breach. • Bill negotiation: The ever-changing health care system is often confusing to navigate. Ongoing education, as well as help understanding medical bills, can ultimately mean greater access to efficient, affordable care. Transformed Benefits: Insurance providers will likely shift the customer experience to follow that of

retailers and other industries. In 2018, expect to see insurers such as Aflac offer more cohesive insurance policies that combine multiple benefit types into one plan. Beyond the Basics: You may find things that were once luxuries, such as 401K matching, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and even annual bonuses, are not as successful in meeting the expectations of today’s employees. As those expectations grow, successful businesses can continue to close the gap with such services as: • Health advocacy: Access to round-the-clock personal health advocates who can answer health care and insurancerelated questions. • Financial and legal fitness: Access to financial and legal advisors who can educate consumers on the preparation of wills and other legal documents. • College-advisory services: These might include

resources to help lower college costs and navigate the admissions process. • No more “one-sizefits-all”: Communications from benefits providers may be more tailored to individual needs. • Bite-sized communications: Concise information about workplace benefits, tips for using benefits to help protect financial security and better explanations of coverage combinations that are appropriate at various life stages. • New format: While some benefits information will still be delivered in the typical booklet format, more businesses may consider using online articles, digital signs, brown-bag luncheons and town halls. • Frequent communications: Employers may communicate about benefits throughout the year, or time communications to coincide with life events, such as employee anniversaries. Time Spent Smarter:

In 2018, employers who have not yet adopted online platforms to manage benefits may do so. Advantages include year-round, convenient access to pertinent information and one-page views of all benefits options and selections, enabling you to identify any holes you may have in coverage. Penny-Pinching: More voluntary benefits, such as accident, critical illness/ cancer, hospital indemnity, life and disability insurance, are on the horizon. According to the 2017 Aflac WorkForces Report, 81 percent of employees see a growing need for voluntary insurance benefits, and 90 percent consider voluntary insurance at least somewhat part of a comprehensive benefits program. Thanks to a tech-driven world and the growing demands of consumers, 2018 may see insurers expand their services to offer even more convenience and personalization. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff More American troops will be headed to Afghanistan in the new year, the top US general in Kabul told reporters. Increased numbers of US advisers will be backed by combat troops as well. There are over 1,000 advisers out with Afghan forces at any given time, General John W. Nicholson Jr. told reporters Sunday. “Next year, however, this will increase dramatically.” The new plan for turning the corner in a war the US has fought since 2001 involves deploying more advisers in battle alongside Afghan security forces, Nicholson said. The brigade-size teams “will be backed up by US combat enablers, not only for the protection of our own force, but for support of Afghans as well,” he said. Two brigade combat teams from the 4th Infantry Division will head out to Afghanistan from Fort Carson, Colorado in the spring, the US military newspaper

Stars and Stripes reported. The 6,000 or so troops will spend nine months in Afghanistan, and will be relieving a combat team from the 25th Infantry and another from the 82nd Airborne. There are about 14,000 US troops in Afghanistan at the moment, including the 3,000 sent in September, following President Donald Trump’s announcement in August that he would escalate the war rather than wind it down. “Our troops will fight to win,” Trump at the time. “My administration will ensure that you, the brave defenders of the American people, will have the necessary tools and rules of engagement to make this strategy work.” As part of the strategy, the White House has delegated substantial decisionmaking authority to military commanders in the field. Under this authority, Nicholson ordered the use of the Mother of All Bombs (MOAB) against Islamic State (IS, formerly

ISIS/ISIL) militants in April. The general has praised Trump’s new strategy as a “game changer” and said it has already begun to pay dividends. Vice President Mike Pence spoke along the same lines last week, when he made a surprise visit to the troops in Afghanistan. “The results are really beginning to become evident around the country,” Pence said after meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. Wishing the US troops a merry Christmas, he assured them the that Trump’s new “fight-towin strategy” for Afghanistan was “bearing fruit.”

“I believe victory is closer than ever before,” Pence said. While the Pentagon is focused on the Taliban, who control approximately half the country, IS militants are expanding their presence, Russia has warned. Many IS fighters who fled Syria and Iraq have moved to Afghanistan, where they may be 10,000 strong, according to Zamir Kabulov, head of the Middle East department in the Russian Foreign Ministry. On Monday, a suicide attack in Kabul killed six and injured two people outside the Afghan intelligence headquarters. IS claimed responsibility for the bombing.

What You Need to Know About Caregiving

Caregiver, Kathie Wells, her husband Robert, and their family. By Desert Star Staff As the population ages, more people (particularly women) will be “sandwiched” in between taking care of their parents or other family members in need, and their children. Take telenurse and nurse educator Kathie Wells, RN, BSN, CCM. At age 55, she is juggling full-time work, while raising schoolage kids and caring for her

husband Robert, 64, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in 2002. As a nurse, Wells understood the onset and progression of PD, which often includes motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity and balance issues. But her husband’s disease progressed in a surprising way when he began to see and believe things that weren’t real. PD is a neurodegenerative

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – Civilliberties advocates want the New York Police Department to hand over more information about its cellphone tracking devices. The New York Civil Liberties Union was in the State Supreme Court this week in its ongoing case seeking transparency in the NYPD’s use of surveillance technology called Stingrays. According to NYCLU staff attorney Bobby Hodgson, responses to the Freedom of Information Law request so far show that the NYPD has used the devices more than 1,000 times in a variety of cases. But some requested information is still missing. “They continue to redact basic information about the models of the devices that they’ve purchased, the prices of those models, things that other jurisdictions regularly turn over and that are part of the public domain around the country,” he explains. Stingrays, which mimic cellphone towers, can track cellphone locations and collect other data, but some models also can capture the content of calls. Hodgson says the information released so far reveals that the NYPD does

not have a written policy on the use of Stingrays, and doesn’t believe they need to get a courtissued search warrant before using the device. “Their position is that they only need to obtain a much lower-level order, what’s called a pen-register trap-and-trace order or a penregister warrant, in order to use a Stingray device than a traditional warrant supported by probable cause,” he says. He points out that other municipalities around the state have fully complied with requests for information that the NYPD continues to withhold. But Hodgson notes that the case does have statewide implications. “The judge’s decision is, of course, important to other jurisdictions around the state where we don’t yet know what the police departments have, and what type of information police will be able to keep secret in the future in the face of a reasonable and lawful Freedom of Information Law request,” he adds. The NYCLU says the requested information would help reveal the NYPD’s capacity to use Stingrays to spy on New Yorkers.

brain disorder often involving both motor and nonmotor symptoms, including hallucinations and delusions. When those symptoms appear, it may be Parkinson’s disease psychosis (PDP) and it occurs in more than half the people with Parkinson’s during the course of their disease. Yet, only 10 to 20 percent of patients will proactively report their hallucinations and delusions to their doctor.

When Wells’ husband began to experience delusions, she found his behavior frustrating and alarming. For example, Robert would spend hours in the yard digging up garden stones, convinced he’d found valuable “treasure.” Neighbors remarked on Robert’s behavior and his children wouldn’t invite friends over to avoid them seeing their dad relentlessly digging. Robert’s delusions combined with his other PD motor symptoms were hard for Wells to manage. She struggled to get enough sleep caring for Robert, and their children were hesitant to go out in public with their father because he shared his treasure hunting stories with strangers all the time. While there’s currently no cure for PD, there are different treatment options to address both motor and non-motor symptoms. Wells says it was a relief when her husband’s neurologist suggested an FDA-approved medication indicated for the treatment of hallucinations and delusions associated with PDP. Wells recommends the following to caregivers of people with Parkinson’s. • Consider talking to a

professional, as caregivers are more likely to experience relationships or social life suffering and emotional stress than non-caregivers. Likewise, caregiving can take a toll on physical health. Take time to sleep, de-stress, eat well and exercise. • Seek logistical and emotional help from family, friends, support groups and advocacy groups, who often have free resources available. For example, the Parkinson’s Foundation has advice for caregivers and a helpline staffed by nurses, social workers and therapists. • Even if you understand your loved one’s condition, report new symptoms or concerns to a healthcare provider as they arise. “I now know that delusions along with hallucinations are telltale signs of Parkinson’s disease psychosis, however, I didn’t recognize those symptoms immediately,” says Wells.
