Don’t Fret Over A Career Path; Take The Road Less Traveled

By Sandra A. Miller “The road less traveled” is an iconic idiom that has bounced around for decades, but sadly, not enough young people are taking it as they head into adulthood. Paraphrased from a line

in the Robert Frost poem, The Road Not Taken, the road less traveled conjures the image of a young person acting independently, freeing themselves from conformity and perhaps making bold choices or even ill-advised,

risky ones. It sounds exciting and can lead to spectacular successes – or failures. Most, of course, prefer the safer path, with a fouryear college degree becoming almost cliché as the most secure way to go forward

in life. And there are other conventional routes: getting a stable job right out of high school, a training program leading to a career, etc. Look, college is still a great gateway to your future. It’s one I took and recommend. I teach writing in college now. But what I’m saying is, whatever you do, don’t let societal conformity or expectations, peer pressure, know-it-all professors, parental pressure, or your own fears and insecurity prevent you from taking the road – or several side roads – less traveled. There cannot possibly be a better way to learn about yourself. Take the scenic route down the dirt path by the creek. Through the woods, over the mountains. The road less traveled. Follow your heart wherever it leads. Give yourself a green light

Allow me to flash a blinking red light on your safe path as an absolute danger to the quality of your life, your development and potential, and not least of all, to the wealth of your memories. From the luxury of looking into my own rear-view mirror, I can tell you that being spontaneous, courageous, and zestful can lead to extraordinary experiences that will make your life far richer than it otherwise would be. Most of us grow up being told what to do by well-meaning parents, or at least guided in some ways. And that’s as it should be, to a degree; on the other end of the spectrum, the overbearing or helicoptering parent snuffs the freedom out of you before it has a chance to breathe once you’re out of the house. You feel obliged to a life of conformity.

How Connecting Children to Nature is Good For Both

By Clyde Butcher Plenty of older Americans hold fond childhood memories of climbing trees, catching frogs, and engaging in endless hours of tag or hideand-seek with friends. Most children today, though, spend much less time outdoors, with their recreational hours instead devoted to TV, video games and computers, a trend that has nature advocates concerned. “If they don’t feel a connection to nature, they aren’t going to feel it’s important,” says Clyde Butcher (www. clydebutcher.com), a nature photographer who since the 1980s has helped bring national awareness to the Everglades through stunning black-and-white photographs that have been compared to the works of Ansel Adams. “The question is, how do we get them to make that connection. The answer is that the responsibility lies with you and me. I think it’s important to educate both kids and grownups about the world’s environmental wonders.” Advocacy groups are trying to do just that. The National Wildlife Federation, for example, has a Green Hour program designed to encourage parents, grandparents, schools, and others to adopt a goal of an hour per day for children to play and learn outdoors in nature. Butcher says that he tries to bring nature to people through his photography in the hopes they will be inspired to experience it for themselves. “My goal is for them to say, ‘Wow, I want to go there. I want to see the real thing,’ ” he says.

Introducing children to the great outdoors is about more than just building extraordinary memories. Butcher and other nature proponents say benefits include: Time outdoors can equal happiness. “Nature is one of those things that can really bring your spirits up,” Butcher says. Indeed, studies show that spending time outdoors is good for your mental health, and those who manage to do so are generally happier than those who stay cooped up inside. Butcher does his part to try to put people in touch with nature. Just recently, his gallery in the Big Cypress Swamp in south Florida sponsored a fall festival what nature has to offer, he that included guided swampsays, are more likely to become walk tours for children and advocates for protecting it. adults alike. Those swamp walks “Sometimes, in the provide what Butcher thinks of as education by immersion. Time outdoors makes children healthier. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to children being overweight, which in turn increases their risk for a number of diseases, such as asthma and diabetes. When children spend time outdoors, they are almost certain to get more exercise, reducing those risks. Health professionals also say that, while over exposure to the sun can be harmful, sometime absorbing the sun’s rays is helpful in such ways as boosting your body’s vitamin D. Time outdoors makes children better stewards of the earth. It’s important to protect the environment, and to preserve natural wonders for future generations, but it’s difficult to truly appreciate nature without venturing out into it, Butcher says. Children who take the time to explore December 27, 2019

abstract, it’s difficult to understand why nature is so important,” Butcher says. “But when children step into

it, and see it firsthand, they can fall in love with it. Then they begin to understand.”

Foundation Board’s vicepresident and secretary. “As the first District Board president from the east valley, I have an obligation of bringing a greater awareness of the District’s resources to a population that had no reason to know about it in the past,” De Lara says. “On the other hand, I also plan to bring greater awareness of east valley issues to the Board while not ignoring the needs of the west valley that the District has historically served. “My new position also means making myself available to listen to more people and to communicate effectively to better advocate, support, and develop new partnerships with interested stakeholders.”

Joining De Lara as a Board officer is Karen Borja of Indio. She will serve as vice-president and secretary. Representing Zone 6, Borja also was appointed to the Board following expansion. She currently works as director of community affairs with Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest. “I am excited to lead with Leticia, the Board president, my Board colleagues, and the CEO of the District in creating the next strategic plan that will cover every resident of the Coachella Valley,” Borja says. “My serious efforts to ensure the District and Foundation are equitable fiscal stewards will continue in this role as vice-president.”

Completing the trio of Board officers is Director Mark Matthews of Palm Springs and Zone 3. He continues in his role as treasurer. Matthews, De Lara, and Zendle occupy three of the

four Board seats that will be up for election in November 2020. Zone 5, currently represented by Arthur Shorr of Rancho Mirage, also will be on the ballot. Borja will be up for re-election in 2022.

In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds—and the system—stacked against them. In addition to Jordan, Foxx, and Larson, the film stars Rob Morgan, Tim Blake Nelson, Rafe Spall, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Karan Kendrick.

Just Mercy was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Andrew Lanham, based on the award-winning nonfiction bestseller by Bryan Stevenson. It was produced by Gil Netter, Asher Goldstein, and Jordan. Just Mercy is a presentation of Warner Bros. Foxx joins this year’s previously announced honorees Antonio Banderas (International Star Award, Actor), Laura Dern (Career Achievement Award), Adam Driver (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor), Cynthia Erivo (Breakthrough Performance Award), Zack Gottsagen (Rising Star Award), Jennifer Lopez (Spotlight Award, Actress), Joaquin Phoenix (Chairman’s Award), Martin Scorsese (Sonny Bono Visionary Award), Charlize Theron (International Star Award, Actress) and Renée Zellweger (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress). For his role in the film, Foxx won Best Supporting Actor from the African-American Film Critics Association and has received several nominations, including Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role from the Screening Actors Guild (SAG) Awards; Outstanding Supporting Actor, Motion Picture from the Black Reel Awards; and Best Supporting Actor from AARP Movies for Grownups Awards.

Compelling and thoughtprovoking, Just Mercy is based on the true story of lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Brie Larson). One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder December 27, 2019

Adam Lampert at Fantasy Springs

Adam Lambert. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Adam Lambert made his highly anticipated appearance at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on December 20th to a fan-filled Special Events Center. Adam Lambert made many fans as a 2009 American Idol Alumni. He returned to Fantasy Springs Resort Casino again and continues to bring huge crowds for his performances. He brought his Velvet: Side A tour. It was interesting to note that his band consisted mostly of women with only one man as a guitarist.

He came on stage in a purple suit complete with vest and several gold neck chains and one of the pearls with a large medallion. I noticed he had huge rings on most of his fingers and unmatched earrings to complete the outfit. The first few songs saw him in Elton John type big round glasses adorned with red ruby-like stones all around the edges. He took the glasses off after the first few songs so fans could see those great eyes which he had put shiny blue eyeshadow on the lids to accentuate

Peggy and Tony Frank, Jack and Kathy Farwick. Photo by Pat Krause the darkness of his eyes. He has this vast vocal range, so the songs he sang were in all different tones. He uses his powerful voice in most songs and uses his distinctive falsetto voice too. He sang, What Do You Want From Me, Another One Bites The Dust, Super Power, and one of my favorites, Belief, to name just a few... When he would do his little dance steps, the audience would scream and clap loudly. He has this way of doing a small step or shoulder shrug that entices the fans. I talked with some

of the fans, and they all felt he should have won the American Idol contest but also said it was probably the best thing he came in second as he could control his own career better and better he has. He is now a global superstar with many CDs on the top of the charts. His fan base has continued to grow after each performance or a new song. Fans yell and cheer, and some found space to dance in the back of the Special Events Center. A few cameras and always the ever-handy cell phone were busy

recording his performance or taking photos. He has performed as lead singer for QUEEN. Their performance at the 2019 Oscars singing, We will Rock You, had the audience on their feet and had them cheering for and singing along to, We Are The Champions. Another fantastic performance by a superstar, Adam Lambert. Watch for more entertainers coming soon, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, 98 Degrees, and the legendary Tony Bennett.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site www.STOXPOSTING.com, using the file number assigned to this case 19-23427. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource. com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/ TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2019-01339-CA. Real Crime Blockbuster Series: “The Killing of JonBenét.”

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, - Broad + Water Studios and Endeavor Audio have launched the second season of their blockbuster podcast series The Killing Of with a new investigation into the longestrunning cold case in America, The Killing Of JonBenét. The new season marks the return of one of the year’s most-downloaded true crime podcasts, The Killing Of Marilyn Monroe. The 12-part series smashes brings listeners inside a new investigation as a team of internationally renowned investigators, experts, and lawyers discover new evidence, new suspects, and work in concert with John Ramsey, members of the Ramsey family, and their friends to try to close one of America’s most haunting mysteries. It was a crime that gripped the world and triggered a family cataclysm almost unthinkably terrible in both detail and consequence. The murder of JonBenét Ramsey shocked us all. That she was killed at the age of just six-years-old was a tragedy of epic proportions—but the circumstances surrounding her death were nothing less than horrifying. Episode one, “Christmas Tragedy” debuts Monday, December 23, and returns to the early morning of December 26, 1996, when Patsy Ramsey dialed 911 to report the apparent kidnapping of her six-year-old daughter JonBenét. It was the infamously desperate call for help that has since been heard around the world. Now, 22 years later, the most iconic murder of the 20th century still remains unsolved, and her family is still living the nightmare of losing JonBenét and being convicted by the press for her demise. The initial investigation was flawed, with police and prosecutorial misconduct, as well as widespread evidence tampering. The current research–such as it is–remains mired in doubt

and misinformation. Now, 22 years later, the most iconic murder of the 20th century is reopened by her own family in an independent and unflinching investigation designed to end their living nightmare of losing JonBenét and being convicted by the press for her demise. With new DNA evidence at hand and a recently discovered list of unpursued prime suspects from lead detective Lou Smit’s personal files, a father and son find themselves at the outset of a new investigation that could very well end with an arrest. Together, The Killing Of JonBenét team leaves no stone unturned, as they investigate each suspect, using new advanced technologies to collect DNA along the way, comparing

each sample to the DNA found on JonBenét. They will sift through scores of new tips and leads, pore over never-before-seen crime scene evidence, search through hundreds of pages of evidence, coroners’ reports, police statements, and private journals, and conduct many exclusive new interviews. The Killing Of JonBenét is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and all podcast listening apps. The series is produced by Broad+Water Studios for Endeavor Audio. The series is hosted by Danielle Robay, written by Dominic Utton, executive produced by Dylan Howard and coexecutive produced by Tom Freestone, Doug Longhini, Susan Bennett, James Robertson, and Andy Tillet.
