Palm Canyon Theatre Stages a Crowd-Pleasing Musical Revival for the Holidays By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association With the Holidays fast
approaching Christmasthemed theatre productions abound practically everywhere. Out here in Southern California’s desert paradise of Palm Springs even this world class tourist destination gets
into the spirit of things. The Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) now in its twentysecond year of producing quality theatre is staging a revival of one of their signature musicals last seen by PCT audiences 11 years ago.
“The King and I” may not be a typical Christmas musical but it’s hard to resist any Rodgers and Hammerstein production. With the music of Rodgers and the lyrics and libretto by Hammerstein… well it doesn’t get much
better than this. The locals, and even the out-of-towners who visit Palm Springs, from time to time, may recall earlier musical productions directed, choreographed, Continues on Page 3
Nancy Pelosi says Trump to be impeached By Desert Star Staff House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has instructed the House Judiciary Committee to draft articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, following a Democratled impeachment inquiry. Pelosi – who has until recently been cautious about the political ramifications of impeaching the president – announced the decision on Thursday. Two days earlier, the House Intelligence Committee voted to send a report to the Judiciary Committee. The document alleges that the evidence of Trump’s misconduct is “overwhelming.” Today, Pelosi echoed
this sentiment, telling reporters that “the president’s actions have seriously violated the Constitution.” The impeachment inquiry against Trump centers on a July phone call between himself and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which Democrats allege Trump coerced Zelensky into reopening a corruption investigation against Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. Democrats say Trump withheld military aid from Kiev to pressure Zelensky into reopening the probe. Trump, has repeatedly fired Continues on Page 2
All-out war could erupt between US and North Korea
By Desert Star Staff Tensions between Washington and Pyongyang
continue to grow as North Korean state media warn that a simmering conflict
between the two nations could turn into a full-blown war at any given moment.
Even an accident could now lead to an all-out armed conflict, Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) warned, adding that if Washington resorts to military force Pyongyang would promptly respond in kind. The stark warning comes a day after US President Donald Trump threatened to use the military might of “the most powerful country in the world” against Pyongyang if he has to. At the same time, he also boasted averting no less than a “World War III” as he took credit for defusing tensions with North Korea. Negotiations between the two nations have meanwhile reached a sort of a deadlock. Washington and Pyongyang expressed their commitment
to the idea of the Korean Peninsula’s denuclearization in exchange for lifting sanctions from Pyongyang back in June during the first direct talks between Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jongun. Yet, making concrete steps in that direction has proved much more difficult. The second TrumpKim summit in Vietnam this February collapsed because of disagreements over the timing of sanctions relief. The latest round of working-level talks in October failed to result in any meaningful progress. Pyongyang then said that it is up to Washington to decide what kind of gift it would get for Christmas.

Documents Show Coal Industry Knew Climate Impacts in 1960s
By Desert Star Staff As court proceedings continue against ExxonMobil on claims the company misled investors about the risks of climate change, a recently discovered journal suggests the coal industry knew about the potentially catastrophic impacts of burning coal as early as 1966. Christopher Cherry, a civil engineering professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville who found the industry journal, says he was surprised by how clearly executives understood how CO2 emissions were linked to climate change. “Talking about changes in temperature causing polar ice caps, inundation of cities like New York and London,” he points out. “In one paragraph they basically summarized what we’ve been observing, and what scientists have been describing was going to
happen, but they did it back in the ‘60s, 50 years ago.” Also in the journal, an engineer from Peabody Coal pointed out that the industry was “buying time” until federal air pollution protections were introduced, after the 1963 Clean Air Act. The first federal regulations for CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants did not come until 2015, and were repealed in 2017. Peabody has responded to the findings, acknowledging fossil fuels’ role in climate change and promising to advance technologies to reach its goal of nearzero emissions. Cherry notes that just a Coal executives wrote in 1966 that C02 emissions could “cause melting of the polar icecaps, which, few years ago, Peabody’s in turn, would result in the inundation of many coastal cities, including New York and London.” position on climate change (PDTillman/Wikimedia Commons) was denial and obfuscation. “At the end of the day I climate change for the last coal complicity in climate when he saw the 1966 Mining don’t hold a lot of hope or few decades, obviously now change. Earlier, Trump goaded the Democratic Party, writing “if you are going to impeach me, do it now, fast, so we can have a fair trial in the Senate, and so that our country can get back to business.” For Pelosi and her party, the next step in the process is getting the articles of impeachment past a simple majority vote in the House. From there, Trump can only be ousted from the White House after a trial and twothirds majority vote in the Senate, an unlikely scenario with Republicans in control.

Aim to eat smaller meals every two to three hours, six times a day so that you don’t binge or overdo it. You’ll feel full and satisfied, which will help you make smarter choices. 2. Keep the Good Stuff Where You Can See it. It may sound overly simple but it’s true, you are more likely to eat healthy foods if you put them in a visible, easy-toreach location. And for the fridge? Don’t put your fruits and veggies in the produce bin! The middle shelf is the sweet spot. That’s where to keep your celery, carrots, apples, oranges and all that good stuff. 3. Don’t Go It Alone. Losing weight isn’t exactly a cakewalk. But it doesn’t have to be impossible. Find a weight loss plan that works for you and fits in with your lifestyle. Programs like Nutrisystem ensure you feel satisfied throughout the day and take the guesswork out of dieting, making it easier to stick with the plan and drop those pounds.
4. Drink Up. Hunger and thirst are easily confused, so stay hydrated. But don’t make the mistake of drinking your calories,” says Courtney McCormick, dietitian at Nutrisystem. Opt for water. If you’re looking for a more flavorful option, add fresh fruit slices, a few squeezes of lemon or some sprigs of mint leaves.

Church of Sweden unveils altarpiece of paradise featuring gay couples
By Desert Star Staff A church in Malmo has a new altarpiece meant to celebrate inclusivity by replacing Adam and Eve in paradise with gay couples in suggestive poses, while depicting the serpent tempting them as a transgender woman. The controversial work of art is not new. Photographer and artist Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin painted it in 2012 and tried to donate it to the Skara Cathedral just before the church was preparing to conduct the first same-sex wedding in its 1,000-year history. The openly lesbian artist, who has a history of blending religious imagery with prominority activism, said at the time that she wanted to test if the Church of Sweden was as gay-friendly as it claimed to be when it embraced same-sex marriage in 2009. The Skara Cathedral politely declined the gift, saying it was about political activism and not faith. But over seven years have passed, and now Wallin has got her way, even if it isn’t in her home city. St. Paul’s Church in Malmo accepted the painting called “Paradise” as its new altarpiece and unveiled it on Sunday, the first day of Advent. Helena Myrstener, the pastor, said that “history was written” in the hanging of the “LGBT altarpiece” as she tweeted a photo of the painting. Wallin’s reimagining of paradise was inspired by one of the works by Renaissance master Lucas Cranach the Elder. The artist/activist said she wanted to show that, since the beginning of time, the place for gay people was in paradise rather than hell. The modern interpretation interestingly seems more prudish in terms of nudity than the 16th century originals as both “lesbian Eves” have their breasts covered by leaves rather than concealing only their genitals, as is traditional. But it’s probably not because the artist has problems with nudity. After all, her most famous photo exhibition – the 2012 Bibleinspired “Ecce Homo” – featured an image portraying

the baptism of Jesus with the model standing for Christ having his penis fully exposed. The Church of Sweden, the state Church of the Scandinavian country until 2000 and still by far its largest
denomination, prides itself on embracing a laundry list of woke agendas. Despite this, Swedes have been leaving the Church in record numbers lately, according to surveys. Judging by some
comments on social media, the new altarpiece won’t help much with stopping the exodus. “The politization has gone too far,” one member commented on the news as she announced leaving the
Church. Another one said that while there were plenty of enlightened priests in the Church of Sweden, radicals from a “PC-pack” have turned it into their own arena.

“The Irishman” --A Scorsese Drama
Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” is a mob drama that deals with the life and eventual death of union activist Jimmy Hoffa. And judging from the critical buzz surrounding the film “The Irishman” will be an Oscar contender. Scorsese, now 76, still has the power to spin compelling
on screen dramas like “Taxi Driver,”“The Departed,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Shelter Island.” And his directorial legacy continues in his latest film “The Irishman.” The cast includes such high profile actors as Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa, International Brotherhood
of Teamsters president, Joe Pesci as Mafia don Russell Bufalino and Robert De Niro portraying Frank Sheeran, the “Irishman.” Other key players in the cast are Harvey Keital, Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale and Anna Paquin as one of Sheeran’s daughters who keeps her distance from
her dad once she realizes what he does for a living. Oscar-winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian based his screenplay on Charles Brandt’s book “I Heard You Paint Houses” which is Mafia slang for being a hitman. It’s a job that often leads to an untimely death like being shot in an alley or killed by a nail bomb detonated under your porch. In the case of Sheeran, he manages to survive well into his eighties, but in the end he lives alone in a nursing home, not with his family. Thanks to a computer generated process, the main characters start out as younger men who slowly age throughout the film. In the beginning Sheeran is a trucker who delivers meat to various locations. After he meets Mafia don Bufalino he is encouraged to quit his old job and join the mob as an enforcer. In later years Sheeran is introduced to Hoffa thanks
to Bufalino. The two get along well together and their eventual working relationship in the Teamsters turns into a genuine personal friendship that endures until Hoffa’s untimely disappearance and death on July 30,1982. In the film Hoffa comes across as a far more likable guy than Sheeran. In fact during a Teamster’s gala Sheeran’s daughter enjoys dancing with Hoffa on several occasions, but never shares the dance floor with her dad. While many Mafia dons bite the dust during the course of the film, their demise is not handled in a grizzly manner that is uncomfortable for viewers to watch. Often we just see the man’s portrait on screen with the cause of death printed below. “The Irishman” has a running time of 3 hours, 30 minutes and is rated R for pervasive language and strong violence.

2 DoD staffers killed & 1 injured after US sailor opens fire
By Desert Star Staff Two civilians were killed after a gun-wielding US sailor went on a shooting spree inside the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, prompting a brief lockdown of the base. The attacker took his own life after the rampage. Three Department of Defense civilian workers were shot, and two of the victims succumbed to their injuries in the wake in the incident, officials at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam told media. The third injured staffer is in stable condition. The base has identified the attacker as a US sailor, who apparently shot himself. A witness told Hawaii News Now on a live broadcast
that he heard what he thought were gunshots and saw the gun-wielding attacker, who he said was wearing a Navy uniform. “I looked out in time to see the shooter, who I assume was a sailor because he was in uniform... shoot himself,” the witness said. The witness went on to say that he saw three people on the ground in the aftermath of the incident. The base was on lockdown for about an hour and a half before it was lifted around 4:00pm. Meanwhile, according to Gov. Ige, the White House has offered federal agencies’ assistance to the base in dealing with the investigation. The shipyard is located
across the harbor from the Pearl Harbor National
Memorial, and is a home port to 10 destroyers
and 15 submarines of the US Pacific Fleet.

Federal Anti-Immigration Policy Hurting Children, Report Says
By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – In California, 1.3 million children younger than age five may lose out on essential services because of a hostile immigration climate, according to a new report. Researchers from two children’s advocacy groups found that the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant policies and heightened law enforcement have had major impacts on children up to age five. Andrea Lopez, family and community engagement coordinator at Para Los Niños, which runs Head Start child care centers in Los Angeles,
says families are dropping out of crucial programs for fear of being deported. “That’s been the most heart-wrenching thing for us, is seeing their struggle and the fear that has been embedded in them,” she states. Lopez says many families are refusing all forms of public assistance, even for their American citizen children, mistakenly believing that this would be held against them when applying for residency. President Donald Trump says his policies are designed to reinforce the rule of law and save taxpayer dollars. Mayra Alvarez, a report coauthor and president of
The Children’s Partnership, an advocacy organization focused on children’s health equity, says many children suffer, terrified that their parents won’t be there when they get home from school. “The kids are becoming more aggressive,” she points out. “There’s also greater separation anxiety. Social withdrawal, being more stressed out as a result of this environment.” Patricia Lozano, another coauthor and executive director of Early Edge California, an advocacy organization focused on early learning, encourages state policymakers to pass a law that declares preschools
and day care centers off limits to immigration officers – something already in place at K-12 schools in the state. “Early childhood programs should be safe places for families, and the providers and teachers need the support to provide the right resources to face this hostile environment,” she stresses. California demonstrated its commitment to early
childhood programs by allocating funds in the new state budget to train home visitors from the Cal Works program on ways to blunt the impact of federal immigration policies and help families connect to needed services. Disclosure: The Children’s Partnership contributes to our fund for reporting on Children’s Issues, Immigrant Issues, Mental Health, Youth Issues.
A new report says many young children in immigrant families are having a hard time in preschool, linking fear and distress to the current political climate. (Greg Gayne/Para Los Ninos)

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed or trust on the property. How to Declutter Your Child’s Room to Make Way for Play
By Desert Star Staff While all the gear, clothes and toys your kids possess are signs of a joyful childhood, keeping it all organized is essential for health, safety and even fun. “Too many toy choices that are unorganized can make it difficult to find a toy to play with at all,” says Keri Wilmot, pediatric occupational therapist and an expert contributor to
TheGeniusofPlay.org. “What’s more, the chaos can pose various safety hazards.” Organization is more conducive to playtime, which is why Wilmot and The Genius of Play, an initiative whose mission is to raise awareness about the importance of play and help parents make it a critical part of raising kids, are offering eight tips to clean up the inevitable clutter:
• Provide Bins: Use bins to help kids organize toys, art supplies and games, keeping size in mind -- the bigger the bin, the harder it is to locate specific toys or objects. While clear bins are great for closets by making it easy for kids to identify their contents, colorcoded or decorative bins are more visually appealing options for the playroom. • Make Smart Furniture
Choices: Shelving lets children see what’s available to play with, however toys that require adult assistance are best stored in closed bins inside a cabinet or closet that’s inaccessible to kids. Closed cabinets have the added benefit of reducing the appearance of clutter. Make sure to secure shelves or furniture to the wall for safety so they can’t tip over. • Rotate Toys: Rotating toys’ placement inside storage areas will remind kids of all the fun toys they have, and is an excellent boredom-prevention tool. • Donate: Before holidays, birthdays or other occasions when kids are showered with gifts, talk to your child about what toys are no longer used, and give them a second life by passing them on to a neighbor or friend with a younger child or by donating them to a charitable organization. Throw away any toys that are broken, hazardous or recalled. • Use Space Wisely: While big toys like kitchens and playhouses offer up fun, they can take up a lot of playroom real estate. Opt for alternatives
that can be taken down when not in use, like pop-up tents, tunnels and playhouses. • Schedule Clean-Up: Set a clean-up schedule that gives kids a role in sorting and putting items back into their correct places. Make a game of it by turning on tunes and seeing who’s the fastest. • Get Toys off the Floor: Stepping on certain toys can be painful. A child-sized table offers a stable surface for building brick structures and other creations, plus it gets small toys off the floor. • Use Walls: Maximize space and creativity by installing a whiteboard or chalkboard to use as an art surface. Walls are also a good place to store shelving for books. Parents searching for more play ideas and expert tips like these can visit TheGeniusofPlay.org or follow @GeniusofPlay on Facebook and Instagram. Decluttering play areas pays off, giving kids more opportunities to play and learn safely. StatePoint
Other-Abled Workers Fuel Vertical Farm in Jackson

Nearly two-thirds of Vertical Harvest’s workers face disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome or vision, speech and learning impairments. Caroline Croft Estay is a
company co-founder and says inclusive, integrated workplaces are game changers for businesses because they bring in new energy – everybody is excited to clock in. “They’re ready to work,

they’re on time, they work hard,” she states. “And it really shifts the culture, and kind of raised the bar for all of us, creating this really beautiful, fluid workplace where everybody works together and works hard.” The three story hydroponic operation produces as much food as a traditional five acre soil farm, year round, and with a lot less water. Vertical Harvest workers grow about 25 varieties of micro and specialty greens, lettuces and tomatoes. But Croft Estay adds that workers also are trained to tackle administrative tasks, sales, marketing, customer service and technical maintenance. Croft Estay says while the training process for workers with disabilities can require an upfront investment, the longterm outcome is substantial. She also maintains there’s a job out there for every individual who wants one, regardless of their specific ability level, and says everyone has a right to work. “And yes, the training can take a little bit longer, but then the commitment and the dedication,” she states. “We have no turnover. Everybody that works at the greenhouse stays at the greenhouse, and wants to stay at the greenhouse.” Croft Estay hopes businesses of all types will come to see people with different abilities as
an untapped and valuable workforce, eager to give back to their communities and earn real wages. Nationally, 25% of people with disabilities currently live in poverty, and just one in three is employed.
