DHS City Council Recognizes Local ‘California Teacher of the Year’ KMIR Sara Sanchez Desert Hot Springs, CA - The city of Desert Hot Springs recognizes two teachers, one specifically for being the California teacher of the year, at Tuesday night’s city council meeting. The state of California recognizes five teachers for the “Teacher of the Year” title, but only one can be selected as the national nominee to go up against 49 other educators. Dr. Brian McDaniel, a director of music at Painted Hills Middle School, is one of 300,000 educators in the state of California to be awarded the title of teacher of the year. Dr. McDaniel attended

Cathedral City High School where he marched in the band. He’s been a teacher in Desert Hot Springs for 12 years. “This is my town,” McDaniel says. “And to be a son of Desert Hot Springs when it tends to get a bad rap, to be able to rise above the influences and make it something great, is amazing.” The application process is involved for nominees: multiple rounds of essays, interviews and classroom visits. Since Dr. McDaniel has made it this far, it’s on to nationals. “I’m waiting to hear back to see if I’ve made it hopefully I’ll become the to top four,” he says. “And national teacher of the year.”

He’s expecting to hear if he’s made it as a

Gold price will explode & dollar get wiped out’ By Desert Star Staff Peter Schiff was among the few economists who correctly predicted the financial crisis in 2008. Ten years later, he sees another crisis emerging: a crisis that can crash the stock market and wipe out the US dollar. “I predicted a lot more than just the stock market going down back then. I predicted the financial crisis, but more importantly, I predicted what the government would do as a result of the financial crisis and what the consequences of that would be because that’s where we’re headed. The real crash I wrote about in my most recent book is still coming,” Schiff said in an article posted by Greg Hunter’s USAWatchdog.com and quoted by ZeroHedge. According to Schiff, the US Fed has inflated a gigantic bubble, which is impossible to pop, but when it bursts, the consequences would be very painful for the economy and much bigger than the 2008 meltdown.

“I think this bubble is too big to pop. I think it’s the mother of all bubbles, and when it bursts, there is not a bigger one that the Fed is going to be able to inflate to mask these problems, meaning we can’t kick the can down the road anymore. This time, the crisis is going to hit everyone in the wallet,” he said. He compared the $20 trillion US debt to a camel loaded with straws. “How many straws can you put on a camel’s back? You don’t know until you put that final straw that’s one too many and you break his back. So, can we go to $25 trillion in debt? Maybe. At some point, we are going to break the back of the camel with all this debt. Then we are going to find out how much debt we can pile on, and it’s not going to be pretty,” Schiff said. “Everybody is going to lose. Everybody is going to get wiped out who has been partying in the stock market, the bond market and the real estate

market. The dollar is going to tank, and purchasing power is going to get wiped out.” Schiff says the current financial system would also fail to artificially curb the prices of precious metals. “They can’t keep doing it, and it will end. It’s just like how much debt can we take on. It’s not an unlimited amount. We will know when we get there.

How long can they keep the price of gold suppressed? We will know when we get there. At some point, the price is going to explode because there is real physical buying, and all that paper selling can’t camouflage that,” said the money manager. According to Schiff, gold is the real alternative to fiat money, and people are starting to doubt they can

really trust central banks. “People don’t trust fiat currencies...More and more people are looking for alternatives, and the real alternative is gold. When they embrace it, it’s going to overwhelm the central banks’ ability to suppress the price. In the meantime, enjoy the gift that they are giving,” he said.

By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Improved science on adolescent brain development shows there are new ways to help the more-than 2,300 children in New Mexico’s foster care system become successful adults. The Annie E. Casey Foundation report, “The Road to Adulthood,” offers recommendations on how to treat kids in foster care based on their developing brains. Ezra Spitzer, executive director at New Mexico CAN, said science now shows the developing adolescent brain can heal from trauma more than previously thought. “When a young person enters foster care, so many of their connections are broken,” Spitzer said. “They often

change schools, they obviously are pulled out of their homes, they likely lose relationships with extended family or friends they had in that school, so it’s not only about that they suffered some trauma; they also are experiencing loss.” The report offers caregivers and professionals in the foster care system more concrete recommendations based on brain science that can help kids thrive. Spitzer said those recommendations are important, because foster kids often experience a double whammy when it comes to trauma. “The problem is when they age out of care, they go through that whole process all over again,” she said. “The counselor they used to see,

now doesn’t see adults; the case worker they had goes away; the judge they saw goes away. So all of that is sort of the retraumitization of the system.” Statistics show that every time a student changes schools, their chances of graduating drops by 10 percent. And that’s why a responsive support system is so important. Alexandra Lohrbach, program associate with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, said caretakers and professionals who understand the adolescent brain are critical in helping kids transition out of foster care. LA City Council pres. warns of legal weed regulation blind spots By Desert Star Staff On the verge of becoming the largest US city to regulate recreational marijuana, Los Angeles city council president and two members are already bracing for potential problems in the bureaucratic system’s structure. On Wednesday, the city council voted 12-0 in favor of the marijuana-related regulations which legalized the licensed sale and cultivation of marijuana in the Southern California city of nearly 4 million people. The regulations will dictate how pot businesses will be licensed as well as where weed can be grown and sold. Businesses that are willing to participate in the city’s new marketplace will

need local permits before they are able to apply for state licences, which are required for operation in 2018, according to the Associated Press (AP). Earlier this year, city voters approved January 1, 2018 as the starting date for the city regulations to take effect. During a pre-vote hearing, Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson’s office said the new rules for Los Angeles would take effect immediately following the signature of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, AP reported. “As lawmakers, we have a responsibility to reasonably regulate this industry in a manner that is safe, inclusive, and practical,” Wesson said, according to AP. Some council members expressed concern about the likelihood for marijuana shops to inundate neighborhoods. Concerns were also raised about rogue operators who may try to inch themselves into the legal industry. Councilman Paul Krekorian stated that illegal grow operations threatened to push out businesses in the city’s San Fernando Valley. And Councilwoman Nury Martinez said she was scared the city would fail to sufficiently fund enforcement in the new industry, leaving

many to flourish without proper oversight. The city council also advanced provisions intended to help lower income people and residents convicted of a marijuana-related offense, who currently live, or have lived, in neighborhoods with high marijuana arrest rates, AP reported. The system being set up by lawmakers in Los Angeles is primarily seen to thwart illegal operators, and to impose order, AP reported. However, standing in its way is widespread uncertainty in relation to whether President Donald Trump’s administration will try to intervene in California, and other states, as marijuana

is still illegal on federal level. The landmark decision comes on the heels of two other important votes that paved the way for the city’s new pot marketplace. In March, voters approved Measure M, which had been placed on the ballot by the city council. The measure allowed the city to repeal a past ban on medical marijuana dispensaries under the previously approved Proposition D. Measure M replaced Proposition D with a new set of rules regarding various types of marijuana businesses. It effectively gave the city tools to enforce its marijuana regulations, like authorizing fines and the loss of power and water service

And on November 8, 2016, voters in California approved Proposition 64, which legalized marijuana in the Golden State for adults 21 years of age, or older. Passing the proposition meant that smoking marijuana would be permitted in private homes, or at certain businesses with licenses for on-site consumption of the plant, the New York Times reported. California’s pot industry now has a projected value of $7 billion, while state and local governments in the Golden State are poised to rake in $1 billion in tax revenue from sales.

The federal government is calling for an unspecified reduction in size for Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, on the California-Oregon border. (BLM) By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is calling on the president to reduce the size of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, which straddles the California-Oregon border. What that reduction will look like for Cascade-Siskiyou, as well as Nevada’s Gold Butte, isn’t yet clear, but it comes on the heels of President Donald Trump’s announcement Monday to slash about 2 million acres from Utah’s Bears Ears and Grand StaircaseEscalante monuments. In a press call Tuesday,

Zinke said past presidents had “abused their powers” when designating and expanding monuments. But Oregon state Rep. Pam Marsh says CascadeSiskiyou has broad local support, so officials plan to push back on this decision. “We think the whole idea of shrinking the monument in any way is a bad idea,” she states. “We are gearing up to resist and we’re doing that on a statewide basis. “The monument has the support of our two U.S. senators, the governor – quite a different political environment December 8, 2017

than in some other states.” Marsh also refutes Zinke’s claims that monument status affects private land use within its boundaries. She says local and state laws dictate what landowners can do on their property. Cascade-Siskiyou was created in 2000 and

expanded in 2017. Cascade-Siskiyou is unique among national monuments. It’s recognized as one of the most biologically diverse regions in the country and has become a hub for environmental research. Diarmuid McGuide owns Green Springs Inn, located within the monument. He plans to dedicate part of his property to a field station and education center. McGuide says studying the effects of climate change in a place like Cascade-Siskiyou is increasingly important. “This science is critical to our survival, and what Zinke’s talking about doing is basically compromising a very important asset that we need to respond to climate change,” he stresses. 30th McCallum Theatre Anniversary

Chris Botti and Ten Tenors entertained at a sold-out event. Chris Botti has been a performer at the McCallum for 17 years. The Ten Tenors are another group that has performed before at the McCallum to sold-out shows. CEO Mitch Gershenfeld spoke to the audience about the humble beginnings of the Theatre. He told the men that made the theatre what it is today. There were a lot of years where they didn’t even break-even

but thru the generosity of so many local philanthropists it had become the premier theatre, it is today. The McCallum Theatre was supposed to be named the Bob Hope Theatre in the early years as he made such large contributions to get the Theatre on its feet. The last ten years the finances have improved so they now continue to be a thriving entity. They made some changes and had a lot of help along the way thru the generous donations of money and time. The Theatre holds diverse entertainment so there is something for everyone. Many

of the artists and shows are very expensive and again they are subsidized by local philanthropists and art lovers. Harold Matzner was honored this year for all his expertise as a businessman, Board Chair, visionary, and get it done guy, Matzner has also donated over 5 million dollars to sustain and build the Theatre and its programs. Matzner is a man that is always there when someone or charity needs help. He always, Makes It Happen, with his leadership and determination. A video was shown about his getting the Horatio Alger Award that is

given to only a few people. Matzner also honored the co-chairs and friends, James Houston and R. D. Hubbard. He spoke to others that have worked to make the McCallum Theatre the best. He told a bit about his life, family, and friends. His message was to. Never Give Up and always look forward. He has helped way too many events to count and he is the Chairman of the Palm Springs International Film Festival that has grown under his leadership. He said to fight for your dream and learn from your mistakes. Faith and determination are needed as the American Dream is

still very much alive. Matzner, Houston, and Hubbard all received standing ovations. Chris Botti is one of Matzner’s favorite acts and the Ten Tenors usually perform to a sold-out house. The audience did a lot of clapping for their performances. The Theatre announced they have raised 1.7 million dollars this season. There will now be security at all entrances to make sure everyone will feel safe at the McCallum. Dinners were at Cuistot, Jillian’s, La Spiga and Wallys before everyone headed to the Theatre for the Awards ceremony and the Concert.

Over 200 guests enjoyed playing Craps, Roulette and Blackjack Winners turned in their chips for tickets to put into 3 raffle items that held a lot of fun items. There was also the usual Silent and Live Auctions to raise money for this wonderful charity that does so much good. The Olive Crest Trustee President, Rob Zwemmer, spoke and said he was one of those kids that needed help to make a better life. His Mentor got him off the streets and eventually into college. The Mentor has been in his life and helped

him along the way. This is the kind of help Olive Crest gives to kids in need. The Selfless volunteers attending were asked to stand to be recognized for their work and received a standing ovation. Over 200 guests enjoyed a delicious meal of chicken or sea bass. There was an award ceremony where Dr. and Mrs. James Brinton honored Roger and Jan Johnson with the Brinton Child Advocacy Award for 2017. Dr. and Mrs. Brinton are the founders of Olive Crest because of their personal commitment to child abuse educating at-risk kids and preserving families. Brinton’s choose an honoree that shows the same spirit of Child Advocacy with dedication, leadership and

personal commitment. Roger Johnson is an Olive Crest Trustee and Board Member. Jan Johnson has been involved with Olive Crest Volunteers for eight years, They raised over $125,750 dollars thru the auctions and paddle bidding. A new idea for the desert was the Dessert Dash to have the tables that donated the most to go pick out a favorite cake or dessert. All leftover desserts were auctioned off to make even more money for the charity. Senator Al Franken to resign over sexual misconduct charges By Desert Star Staff Senator Al Franken (D-Minnesota) announced his resignation on the Senate floor, following heavy pressure from his fellow Democrats to step aside over allegations of sexual misconduct. Franken said he won’t give up his voice as an activist. “Today I am announcing that in the coming weeks I will be resigning as a member of the United States Senate,” Franken said in a speech that lasted 11 minutes. He did not admit to any of the allegations of sexual misconduct, saying some of them are “simply not true” and he remembers other instances “very differently.” Franken used the opportunity to lash out at President Donald Trump and GOP Senate candidate in

Alabama, Roy Moore, both of whom have been accused by Democrats of sexual assault. Franken said there was “some irony” in the fact that he is resigning while Trump is still in office and Moore is running for a Senate seat with the support of his party. More than a dozen Senate Democrats called on Franken to resign on Wednesday, after a sixth woman accused him of sexual misconduct. Some analysts have pointed out that Franken’s bitter tone suggested he was being forced out by the party, rather than leaving on his own volition. “I may be resigning my seat, but I am not giving up my voice,” Franken said, adding that he will continue to advocate progressive causes as an activist. “I am going to be

just fine,” he said. Franken was first elected to the Senate in 2008, with a razor-thin margin of just 300 votes. Before turning to politics, he was a comedian

on the popular television show Saturday Night Live. This is the second time this week that a congressional Democrat was pushed out by claims of sexual misconduct.

On Monday, Representative John Conyers Jr. (D-Michigan) said he would retire effective immediately, after serving in the House since 1965.

Irish and English heroes shine on essential new releases

When it comes to new music, the end of 2017 is delivering some of the year’s best and most noteworthy titles. In particular, a handful of artists from Ireland and the U.K have returned with albums that are required listening.

“Something Rotten!” A Musical Comedy Ripe with Laughter

As you might imagine from the title - “Something Rotten!” - this is a rollicking, no-holds barred, irreverent two-act musical written by the brothers Kirkpatrick, Wayne and Karey, with the book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, which is filled with irreverent wise cracks, double entendres, with no sacred subject escaping their sharp wit. This delicious confection, nominated for 10 Tony Awards, is brilliantly directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw. Thanks to the award-winning design team, you will be treated to a fairy tale set by Scott Pask, candy-colored costumes design by Gregg Barnes, with Jeff Croiter’s lighting drenching the stage in 21 flavors of sparkling colors. This production features three principal cast members from the Broadway production: Rob McClure as Nick Bottom, Josh Grisetti as Nigel Bottom, and Adam Pascal as Shakespeare. The show kicks off with a rousing opening number, “Welcome to the Renaissance” belted out by Minstrel (Nick Rashad Burroughs) and an outstanding ensemble. The storyline revolves around the Bottom brothers – Nick, the more aggressive of the two, fabulously played by a multitalented Rob McClure, and Nigel, more the poet and playwright, sweetly brought to life by Josh Grisetti. Their nemesis is Shakespeare, played by Adam Pascal, whose characterization is that of a rock star. Nigel can’t seem to come up with a play, while Shakespeare is spitting them out. In reading some of the Bard’s lines, Nick exclaims, “Who talks like this?” The brothers are under pressure and everything that Nigel writes seems to have a distinct Shakespearean bent. (Who’s stealing from whom?) Hence, another showstopper –“God, I Hate Shakespeare,” sung and danced by Nick, Nigel, and the cast. Not only is Nick under work pressure, he’s also under pressure from his wife

Bea (Maggie Lakis) who wants to work outside the home, but Nick is fearful that everyone will think he’s a failure. Bea, a budding feminist, reminds him, “This is the ‘90s (1890s) and we’ve got a woman on the throne.” (Queen Victoria.) Desperate, Nick goes to soothsayer, Thomas Nostradamus, played by a zany Blake Hammond, who tells him, “I’ve been closed for business due to unforeseen circumstances.” However, wanting to help this struggling theatre person, he goes through a comic trance ritual, hits his forehead a few times and sputters out words like “Cats,” “I see cats,” making hilarious references to other musicals such as “Westside Story and “Les Misérables.” He finally spits out the word “musical,” and encourages Nick to do a play that encompasses singing, dancing, and acting. This is unheard of in 1890s England but Nostradamus assures him that is the direction in which theatre is headed. In one final sputter, he utters the word “eggs” and hence the world’s first musical, “Omelette,” is born where upon their benefactor immediately backs out creating a financial challenge. So while Nigel is penning the text, Nick goes to see Shylock, (well, of course) played by Jeff Brooks. Financing is secured and rehearsals begin with “It’s Eggs!” – a hilarious production number performed by Nick and the ensemble. In the meantime, Shakespeare gets wind of something amiss and disguising himself as one of the actors, scoops up pages of scenes, offering to help by taking them home to critique. What would cross-referencing be without a character named Portia (Autumn Hurlbert.) She is the daughter of Brother Jeremiah, the slightly effete Puritan, ably played by Scott Cote. Portia is smitten with Nigel, which her father forbids. The Bard does a “Shakespeare in the park” number singing the rocking

“Will Power,” reminiscent of The Who’s “Tommy.” You will also witness the transition of “Omelette” to “Hamlet” and will be entertained with 19 toe-tapping, spirited production numbers. Other members of the technical production team are, Peter Hylenski (sound design), Phil Reno (music direction/ conductor), Glen Kelly (arrangements), Larry Hochman

(orchestrations), and John Miller, music coordinator. I’m not giving too much away by saying, “All’s Well That Ends Well,” in this delightful romp through the Renaissance period, which will have you leaving the theatre with a big smile.
