Highlights and colorful moments at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles By Leanne Italie Associated Press Grammys newcomer Sam Smith looked dapper in a white bow tie and Madonna rocked one of the season’s most eclectic red carpets Sunday in a bedazzled two-corner black hat, burlesqueesque corset look with matching thigh high boots. Fashion is always a little crazy at the Grammys, guys

PIVOTAL POINTS and How they CHANGE our Future Decisions

By Janice Gough Whether the Pivotal Point in your life was one of the increased wealth or a situation causing stress in your life, a look back

STAR

historically will help us re-act to them in a positive way. Looking backward at Pivotal Financial points can serve us to have more success today. The February 1st, Super Bowl game with the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots was won in the last few seconds of the game. We all have experienced a Pivotal Point in our lives, which changed the way we lived our lives afterwards. Like in the Super Bowl FortyNine, which brought an exciting and surprising end in the last few seconds of the game, the Seattle Seahawk’s Coach, Pete Carroll, made the controversial decision to pass the ball rather than run it, and possibly caused the loss

of the game. It resulted in losing control of the ball and a turnover of the ball to the Patriots. Coach Carroll will re-think that decision and remember it forever, as many of us will. However, we must admire the way Coach Carroll showed his true being of a person, by the way, that he handled the situation afterward. He accepted the fact that he made a bad decision, but did not re-act defensively or was he destroyed by his decision. Think back when an event served to change your entire life. It may have been a wonderful experience or a terrible one, but we never forget those moments when it occurred. Most important to Pivotal points is not what

happens, as much as how we handle what happens. Disasters and mistakes are the best lessons we can learn from; no matter how painful it is for us at the time. Mistakes train us for success in the future. History does repeat itself; we only need to study those scenarios left behind from years past to determine what reactions serve us best. We have a choice of just a few decisions to make at Pivotal Points. 1.) We can accept what happened, acknowledge it and accept the good or bad things that changed our lives forever. 2.) We can deny fault, and even blame others or conditions that caused it. 3.) We can avoid it

completely. Or 4.) We can defend it… it is how we react to Pivotal Points that determine our future happiness, success and our true character and our ability to turn things around for the better. Red Cross Needs Donors of all Blood Types

By Desert Star Staff diverse blood supply by giving The American Red Cross blood this February. encourages eligible donors to Since the beginning of help ensure a sufficient and the year, widespread flu and

inclement winter weather in some parts of the country have prevented many regular donors from making or keeping their

blood donation appointments. Healthy and diverse blood donors are needed to help maintain a sufficient blood supply. Diversity among blood donors is important because red blood cells carry markers that determine one’s blood type, and certain blood types are unique to specific racial and ethnic groups. Blood must be matched very closely for those patients with rare blood types or for those who need repeated transfusions. Patients are less likely to have complications from blood donated by someone with a similar ethnicity. All blood types are needed, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. WASHINGTON, DC – Former top military brass have come together to support introduction and urge passage of the California Desert Conservation and Recreation Act of 2015 in the new Congress, as shown in a new letter released today by Vet Voice Foundation. The letter is signed by over twenty retired flag officers, including many with experience at military bases in the California desert such as the Army’s National Training Center at Fort Irwin and the Marine Base at 29 Palms. Members of this group delivered the letter to legislators in Washington, D.C. during a recent visit to the nation’s capital. “Having public lands protected for varied recreation activities benefits enlisted personnel, veterans, their families, and the entire public,” said retired Army Lieutenant General Clarence McKnight, former commander of Fort Huachuca in Arizona and a long-time veterans’ advocate. The California Desert Conservation and Recreation Act of 2015 would increase protections for about 1.6 million acres of desert landscapes.

Senator Dianne Feinstein committed last fall to introduce the bill at the start of the 2015 legislation session. Led by retired Brigadier General Steven Anderson, the authors of the letter highlight the importance of public lands as places for veterans to recuperate and recreate with family and friends after combat operations. The California desert is such a place, offering hiking, hunting, fishing, off-roading, camping and other recreational activities to a large population of military retirees who live in the region. The California desert also contributes to the well-being of the many enlisted personnel and families at military installations in Southern California. The letter’s authors put the importance of public lands into context, writing, “In light of the prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and emotional illnesses resulting from over a decade of combat

The rest of the Bay Area was also dry. Meteorology consultant Jan Null tells the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1yqjBbf) that other cities, including San Jose, saw at most two onehundredths of an inch of rain. The Bay Area is still above normal rainfall totals for this time of year after a wet December.

But rain will have to start falling soon to maintain a normal pace. The state, meanwhile, remains in the grips of a drought. San Francisco’s recorded weather history dates back to the Gold Rush era of the mid19th century.

Blues! Why Blues & Latin Music?

Review by Lawrence N. Redd Blues! Why Blues & Latin Music? Is a small yet profoundly important book. It tells young children about blues, jazz, and historical creators of the art form. Written in English and Spanish from the heart and soul of Carolyn Washington-Gaines, and sub-titled Blues!Porque Blues y Musica Latina? The publication cleverly describes an innovative instructional program called, “Blues Schools.” The program targets a diversity of elementary kids in the Los Angeles Unified School District and surrounding communities; however, it is applicable to other public school districts or educational institutions. The bright yellow cover features three colorful hand drawn children pictures of legendary guitarists: Leadbelly, Roy Gaines, and Carlos Santana. In contrasting block

print, the names of other famous blues artists such as Ma Rainey, B.B. King, Celia Cruz, and Etta James are sprinkled among the artwork. The cover foreshadows a book filled with hand drawn pictures and photographs that show legendary professional entertainers teaching the blues to a diversity of kids. The illustrative artwork was contributed by the author and collected over time from former students; primarily from [then eight-year-old] Rainey Washington, the author’s daughter. Blues art is used to help describe melody, tempo, and rhythm; and to emphasize the importance of associative properties in mathematics while using both the English and Latin alphabets. Comments about the blues, captured from children themselves and placed throughout the book, attest to the fact that young kids love

blues music and its history; deeply ingrained in English and Latin cultures. Roy Gaines, the legendary blues guitarist and father of the author, is the biographical focus of the book. Gaines is pictured throughout the book, as if in AAB form, joyfully teaching the blues to young children, playing guitar for the late Billie Holiday and Chuck Willis, and telling stories about gigs with Carlos Santana, his famous saxophonist brother, Grady Gaines or the great Ray Charles. Gaines is also syncopated with other great blues contributors such as Bessie Smith, B. B. King, Sheila E, Buddy Guy, Bobby Bland, Guitar Shorty, Shemaka Copeland, and others; who are each accented by children’s artwork and bilingual comic book captions? It is Roy Gaines, who taught his daughter the intricate details of the music industry that motivated her to

write the book. Throughout the book Washington-Gaines touches upon her own experiences of producing live educational programs using music industry legends in more than five hundred school assemblies and other venues. She meticulously credits many important people for their support, covering two decades. She acknowledges a plethora of influential supporters of her “Blues Schools Program.” Some are well-known and other’s less visible but powerful achievers. Her detailed citations may require parental and teacher guidance to help children explore the larger blues context. Carolyn WashingtonGaines is a successful entertainment businesswoman, steeped in rich cultural appreciation of musical history. For many years, she managed The Gainesville Blues Club

for her father where she perfected skills in entertainment booking, contract negotiations, promotion and accounting. Gaines, who studied acting and modeling, hosted her own television program and interviewed many notable entertainers and educators. If the purpose of education is to successfully pass accumulated cultural knowledge of previous generations onto the next, then Carolyn Washington-Gaines has accomplished that with her “Blues Schools Program.” She has left a clear roadmap to replicate its success, in her book

After 45 Years, Souvenirs from Apollo 11 come to Light By Malcolm Ritter AP Science Writer NEW YORK (AP) - More than four decades after the Apollo 11 moon landing, a cloth bag full of souvenirs brought back by astronaut Neil Armstrong has come to light. Among the trove: a 16 mm movie camera from inside the lunar module that filmed its descent to the moon and Armstrong’s first steps on the lunar surface in 1969. That camera “took one of the most significant sets of images in the 20th century,” said Allan Needell, a curator in space history at the National Air and Space Museum. In an interview Monday, Needell said the museum had been told about the bag in June 2013 by Armstrong’s widow, who had found it while cleaning out a closet in their suburban

Cincinnati home. Armstrong died in 2012. The long process of documenting the find concluded only recently, and that’s when the museum decided to go public, he said. The discovery was revealed Friday by the museum, which is already displaying the camera in a temporary exhibit. Needell noted that the images taken by the camera are far more detailed and clear than the grainy ones shown on TV at the time of the landing. The film cartridges had been removed during the mission and so the device itself was no longer needed. The camera would have stayed on the lunar module, which crashed on the lunar surface after delivering the astronauts back to the orbiter, Needell said, but Armstrong,

Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins “decided to take some souvenirs home with them.” It had long been common knowledge that astronauts sometimes took pieces of unneeded equipment as souvenirs, Needell said. Congress recently passed a law approving the practice. The cloth bag also included other small pieces of equipment, including a waist tether that Armstrong had used to suspend his feet during a rest period while the module was on the moon. Needell called the bag’s discovery “extraordinarily exciting.” The Armstrong family has loaned the material to the museum and pledged to donate it, he said. Investigators seek Phone Records from Jenner, Other Drivers

By Tami Abdollah Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) Sheriff’s investigators on Monday were contacting Bruce Jenner and other drivers involved in a fatal chain-reaction crash in Southern California to ask for access to their cellphone records, authorities said. They’re trying to determine if distracted driving played a role in Saturday’s four-vehicle crash on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Such a request has become routine in collisions where someone is killed, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Philip Brooks said. A publicist for Jenner said the Olympic gold medalist was not texting while driving and the evidence will show that. Alan Nierob said late Sunday that investigators had not yet requested Jenner’s cellphone records but Jenner will provide them if they do. Jenner was driving a black Cadillac Escalade when he rear-ended a Lexus sedan. The

sedan had already slammed into a Toyota Prius that had slowed or stopped on the highway, sheriff’s Sgt. Philip Brooks said. After Jenner’s Cadillac hit it, the Lexus veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a black Hummer. The driver of the Lexus - Kim Howe, 69, of Calabasas - died at the scene. California Department of Motor Vehicle records showed Howe’s license had expired in 2007. Brooks said Monday investigators have not yet looked into that, but that it probably won’t be a key issue since she was killed. In his first comments since Saturday’s crash, Jenner called the wreck a “devastating tragedy” and vowed to cooperate with investigators. “My heartfelt and deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones, and to all of those who were involved or injured in this terrible accident,” Jenner said in a statement Sunday evening. “It is a devastating tragedy. I cannot pretend to imagine what this

heavily damaged engine and its hood popped open. Jenner’s Escalade, which was pulling an off-road vehicle on a trailer, had a damaged front end. Though paparazzi often trail Jenner, there was no indication he was being chased by photographers at the time of the crash, authorities said. Sheriff’s investigators will examine photographs of the crash. They also were seeking witnesses, and any photos or videos from bystanders, including paparazzi, in what’s expected to be a months-long investigation, Brooks said. Jenner passed a field sobriety test and voluntarily submitted a blood sample to determine whether he was intoxicated, authorities said. The sheriff’s department has custody of all the vehicles involved and will be inspecting them to ensure they are mechanically sound or whether a defect prevented somebody from stopping in time. Information gleaned from

the cellphone records could help inform prosecutors, if they were to consider charges against any of the drivers. However, Brooks said it is difficult to determine if a driver was texting at the exact time of a collision. Investigators will look at signs of driver behavior such as multiple texts that span a period leading up to, or including, the crash, Brooks said. The crash comes at a time of widespread talk that Jenner, 65, is becoming a woman. Though Jenner has declined to publicly comment, his appearance has gradually become more traditionally feminine. Those in his inner circles have not challenged speculation that he is preparing to live as a woman and perhaps will appear in a new reality series about his transition. Jenner won a gold medal in the men’s decathlon at the 1976 Summer Games, but he is known to a younger generation as Kim Kardashian’s stepfather. Source KMIR

By Nekesa Mumbi Moody AP Entertainment Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) Beyonce gave a resplendent rendition of “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” at the Grammys but it was Ledisi who gave the song revived attention with her performance of it for “Selma.” Ledisi plays Mahalia Jackson in the Oscar-nominated film and sings the song on the movie’s soundtrack, so some of her fans expressed anger on social media that she was not asked to perform on the Grammys. (John Legend and Common performed their song from the movie, “Glory,” which has been nominated for an Academy Award.) The Grammy-nominated Ledisi said she understands why Beyonce was chosen, but admitted to being “a little disappointed.” “But I got over that and I had to look at the positive and empower women,” she told The Associated Press on the Grammy red carpet on Sunday before the show started. “We have to empower each other.

“I was able to portray an iconic gospel singer, the queen of gospel Mahalia Jackson. I sang the version she sang, take my hand as well with Thomas Dorsey writing it and now we get to see Beyoncé sing a song that’s been living forever and to

her generation,” she said. “It’s great. I’m part of a legacy of great women and the Queen of Soul (Aretha Franklin) sang it as well. So I’m a part of that.” Xixi Yang contributed to this report. Source KMIR

She wore a tight sheer mini skirt under a full black, long-sleeve overskirt adorned with black lace for her first Grammys walk. Katy Perry’s tousled blue hair popped against her silver sheer dress with swingy embellishments. It was fresh from the Paris runway of Zuhair Murad.

“I just want to shine like a diamond,” she said, referring to one of her songs. Perry was greeted on the red carpet by Nicki Minaj in black Tom Ford, her decolletage out in a front slit cut to her waist. Ford dressed Jennifer Hudson in a stunning bright white strapless dress that fell just below the knee, her sassy short hair a perfect complement. Lady Gaga went gray-forgray with date Tony Bennett. On their heads, that is. She showed off a high slit in her silver gown by Brandon Maxwell, dripping in Lorraine Schwartz diamonds and emeralds. Taylor Swift’s turquoise Elie

Saab drew some online snark: “curtains over a mini dress,” one tweeter offered of her sleeveless short-under-billowy, long look. Kim Kardashian’s gold John Paul Gaultier screamed bathrobe, but her new shorter ‘do looked great. No matter. “I love how sparkly it is,” she said. “I love it.” Iggy Azalea’s hair? Not so much. HOROSCOPES ARIES

The message is clear. Groups calling you. You’re being pulled, pushed, attracted, magnetized or simply swept into a group needing your skills. Community and collaboration must become part of your knowledge base; these successfully expand your endeavors. Study collaborative learning. You’re to become cause-oriented, impersonal and humanitarian. You de-centralize – from person to transpersonal.

TAURUS Your purpose is bridging energy and form, maintaining forms in matter that create sustainability for humanity. You’re attempting to anchor ideas that create new resources needed for the times to come. Resources (understanding Venus) are to be used differently now. No longer scattered but tended, saved (like seeds), and cherished. You are to create all the structures for this saving of resources. Build it. You know the rest.

GEMINI There’s a difference between an aspirant and Disciple. The aspirant is the “experiencer” of form and matter; unreflective and unaware of others, focused only upon self (needed developmental stage). Ex-School Official gets 10 Years for Abusing 2 Students By Desert Star Staff RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A onetime California school official was sentenced Monday to 10 years in state prison for sexually assaulting two women when they were her students, including a woman who confronted her in a recorded phone call that went viral on YouTube. Andrea Cardosa, 41, of Perris, was sentenced in Riverside County Superior Court on three charges of committing lewd acts on a child. She avoided a potential life sentence by pleading guilty last month. Prosecutors dropped more than a dozen other counts. Cardosa was charged with abusing a former student at Chemawa Middle School in Riverside beginning when the girl was 12. The abuse lasted from 1997 to 2001, prosecutors said. In court papers, prosecutors said Cardosa molested the girl more than 100 times in a locker room and Cardosa’s car, and at the home of Cardosa’s sister. In a recording that was posted online in January 2014, the former student telephoned Alhambra High School, where Cardosa was assistant principal, and confronted her.

“You should be so ashamed and so disgusted with yourself,” the caller said. “I am. I am,” Cardosa said. “I regret it every day. Every day.” Cardosa later resigned. The ex-student spoke at Cardosa’s sentencing. “I will stand up for my 12-year-old self who did not have anyone to fight for her,” the woman, now 28, said in a written victim-impact statement she read in court. “It is never OK for an adult to betray the trust of a child.” Another former student came forward after the recording appeared online. Cardosa was charged with abusing that victim from 2009 to 2010 while she was a 15-year-old student at Tomas Rivera Middle School in Perris. A statement was read in court on behalf of that woman, who described having nightmares and trust issues. “How will I ever trust anyone around my son?” she said in the statement. The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of sexual abuse. The victims also have sued the Riverside Unified and Val Verde Unified school districts.

Accolades for Desert Leaders

Richard W. Kite, Councilman, Rancho Mirage City Council, Donna Munoz, General Manager of the Morongo Valley Community District and Fire Department and Jock Johnson, Fire Chief, Morongo Valley Fire Department

By Pam Price Recognizing desert leaders has as been nonstop this month. One of the highlights as the 6th Annual Awards Gala presented by the Palm Springs Black History Committee on Feb. 7th at the Hyatt Regency Suites in Palm Springs. Jarvis Crawford, chairman of the Black History Committee welcomed guests to the Gala attended by friends and family involved with Black History Month and how prominently it has been represented in the community. The Awards Ceremony was perfectly choreographed with

Zynisha Clary singing “One Night Only,” so apropos for this elegant evening. Melisse Banwer, Executive Director of the Tolerance Education Center in Rancho Mirage was presented with the Humanitarian Award with the Sports Award recipient, Dan Murphy accepting the honor as the head coach at Palm Springs High School. The James O. Jessie Life time Achievement Award was presented to Bob Silva, artist and activist. The Morongo Valley fire Department efforts to raise funds to purchase a much-needed new

fire engine made the story again when the Rancho Mirage City Council presented them a check for $1000 during their monthly meeting on Feb. 12, accepting the check on behalf of the firefighters was Jock J. Johnson, Fire Chief with Donna Munoz, General Manager of the Morongo Valley Community Services District and Fire Department. In accepting the check both Fire Chief Johnson and Ms. Munoz expressed their appreciation for the donation, which brings them closer to purchasing a state-of-the-art fire truck much needed to handle the

emergencies along Highway 62 through Morongo Valley. And speaking of hot news, the Smoketree BBQ & Grill in Palm Springs, recently opened has been turning up the heat ( on their smoker, that is!) for fans of hickory smoke-cured pork baby back ribs ( half and full rack), mesquite smoked turkey and a starter owner Joe Funky, calls “Burnt Ends.” For barbecue beginners this is “smoke-cured brisket chunks tossed in Texas BBQ Sauce.” Be forewarned it is served “when available.” If you can take the heat further, try their

sweet, blistered shishito peppers with Murray River sea salt accentuated with fresh lemon. Add pork or brisket to a jumbo baked Russet Potato and dine on a five alarm feast! Domestic Violence Issue gets Grammy Spotlight By Desert Star Staff The woman who spoke movingly from the Grammy stage about her experiences with domestic violence says the segment was inspired by a visit to the White House by Grammy show producer Ken Ehrlich. After President Barack Obama made a video appearance on the show calling on musicians to pledge to stop domestic violence, Brooke Axtell took to the Grammy stage to speak about her own experiences. Her life was saved, she said, when she sought help

at a domestic violence center. Katy Perry followed her with a solemn performance of “By the Grace of God.” Axtell said afterward that both she and Perry were honored by the opportunity to address the issue before such a large audience. “We’re at a stage in the movement for social justice where we are in desperate need of having male allies, and that means confronting within our own communities when violence occurs and making sure there are interventions for those who

have abused and been abused,” she said. She noted she was aware both Rihanna and Chris Brown were in the audience when she spoke. Brown has faced a string of legal troubles since beating Rihanna before the 2009 Grammy Awards. Neil Portnow, the recording academy’s president, said neither Rihanna nor Brown was consulted before the segment aired. - Sandy Cohen - www. twitter.com/APSandy

Thought-Provoking Drama on Stage at Pasadena Playhouse By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The current offering on the stage of the venerable Pasadena Playhouse is a searing drama of war. A war some Americans are still arguing about that ended 150 years ago. Yes, that war. The American Civil War. Playwright Matthew Lopez has penned a Civil War drama with a new wrinkle regarding the characters. the “The Whipping Man” (currently the 4th most produced drama in the country this year; according to the folks who track such things) deals with at least two social issue dichotomies of that time period: racial prejudice and antiSemitism. The political issues of 1865 still plague our country, even after all these years, the legacy and bitterness of losing the war and a way of life simmer just beneath the societal surface. And, those resentments and feelings are not exclusive to America. Just check-out the evening news for on-going evidence. The story of “The Whipping Man”, insightfully and intelligently directed by Martin Benson in short, is set in Virginia following Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, which ends the Civil War. The tale involves a wounded Jewish Confederate Captain, who is near death. He crawls back to his childhood plantation, only to find it in ruins and occupied by two of his family’s former slaves who are

preparing for a Passover Seder. The once divided, but soon to be reunited country, is embarking on a new chapter in its history. The relationship between the cultures of the North and the South is tenuous at best. A similar unsettling personal relationship is put to the test when Caleb (an intense Adam Haas Hunter), the son of a Jewish slave owner must confront the new reality – a society of freed slaves – and his now-altered relationship with Simon (a terrific Charlie Robinson), the grandfatherly, savvy, in-charge former slave, and John (Jarrod M. Smith), a younger, belligerent, law-bending former slave and a contemporary of Caleb. Frequently, the religion of the plantation owner was taught to their slaves. When one adds the ingredient of a shared religion into the mix, in this case Judaism, each character has to reinvent himself in order to survive. As Simon, Caleb, and John come to grips with their new situations dangerous secrets begin to bubble to the surface threatening to destroy, not only the family and their connected history, but their shared religious faith as well. This is the third production of “The Whipping Man” I’ve reviewed in the last three years. And two of them have starred Charlie Robinson. Director Benson and Robinson bring a fresh approach and new vigor to the text and to their collaboration. Lopez’s play is layered with

meaning and insight that is nicely captured by this trio of talented actors. Robinson’s dignified Simon portrayal is solid, and at times profound. In the second act, his impassioned, yet cogent, five-minute monologue is a show stopper followed by thunderous applause. Adam Haas Hunter’s Caleb performance is carefully constructed to maximize his characters’ emotional high and lows. Jarrod M. Smith as John, delivers the comedy moments as well as the poignant but turbulent undercurrents that are roiling just beneath the surface of what this excellent ensemble cast brings to playwright Lopez’s provocative play.

The technical credits are first rate, as usual, at The Playhouse. The creative team led by director Benson, renders the plantation’s Main Room in scenes of appropriate ruin and decay in a design by Tom Buderwitz; becoming a visual harbinger of what the country faces in binding up the wounds and after effects of war. Costume designer Angela Balough Calin, delivers the cast the “outer skins” of their characters in perfect period authenticity. The muted lighting areas designed by Lonnie Rafael Alcaraz, enhance and heighten the changing on-stage moods. However, if I had to be picky about the sound designed by Michael Roth, it would be to suggest that rain storms raging

outside the front door, do not just instantly disappear or subside once the front door is closed. Perhaps, the sound could be sneaked down slowly until that effect is audibly accepted by the audience and then fades out completely... just saying. Bottomline: “The Whipping Man” is a splendid ensemble production that makes for an engaging and thoughtprovoking evening of theatre. Artistic Director Sheldon Epps, once again, has his company of players on a roll with a series of winning productions. Laissez bon temps rouler! “The Whipping Man” performs at The Pasadena Playhouse and runs through March 1, 2015.

to hidden springs, from worldfamous wildflowers to herds of majestic bighorn sheep, Americans and international visitors have long been drawn to the stark beauty of California’s desert. The legislation introduced by Sen. Feinstein provides a historic opportunity to protect California’s spectacular desert heritage for future generations. “The conservation of the California desert honors our past and also recognizes the importance of these lands for future generations,” stated Barbara Durham, Tribal Preservation

Officer of the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe. “The desert includes trails and sacred spaces that are part of Native American heritage. This bill will help protect those important places.” Among the other historical treasures that would be protected is Route 66, which Smithsonian Magazine named as one of the ‘10 Must-See Endangered Cultural Treasures’ and, which is a magnet for tourists wanting to relive California’s pioneering past. “Route 66 is part of our American experience and history – set against the unique backdrop of the desert,” said Jim Conkle, Chair of the Route 66 Alliances. “Protecting that part of our history is about connecting to the past, but also about investing in the future and bringing visitors to the area.” An Economic Boost The California desert is one of the top outdoor recreation locations in the United States, and its national parks alone bring nearly three million visitors each year. In San Bernardino County, visitors generated $52.5 million in local tax receipts in 2010, providing much-needed revenue to the county and cities. In 2013, visitors to Death Valley

and Joshua Tree National Parks and the Mojave National Preserve alone contribute $165 million to the region’s economy, supporting nearly two thousand jobs. “As a member of a family which has owned land and operated businesses in the Amargosa and Death Valley area for over 100 years, I am glad to see the introduction of the California Desert Conservation and Recreation Act,” added Susan Sorrells, owner and operator of Shoshone Village, a desert community and tourism destination. “Our region’s economy depends on tourism, scientific study and outdoor recreational activities that take place in our unique and beautiful desert. So protecting these lands is an investment in our area’s economic future.” “The California desert is at the heart of our region’s economic strategy,” said Thomas Fjallstam, President, Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce. “Visitors come to see the striking landscapes, magnificent Joshua tree forests, and the diverse animal life that fills the desert. We must protect this resource as a vital part of financial and cultural well-being.”

Senator Dianne Feinstein to Protect California’s Desert

By Desert Star Staff Bill would expand Death Valley, Joshua Tree N.P. and protect lands for recreation, wildlife and tourism community; business and conservation leaders from the California desert region are applauding legislation introduced by Senator Dianne Feinstein (CA) that would increase protections for approximately 1.6 million acres of desert landscapes. The legislation is co-sponsored by Senator Barbara Boxer (CA). The proposed legislation, the California Desert Conservation

FILM

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

“Paddington” and “Strange Magic” on Screen “Paddington,” from the producer of “Harry Potter,” is a movie for the little kid in all of us. Based on the children’s books by Michael Bond, the film tells the story of a little Peruvian bear who comes to London in search of a new home. He is told by his Uncle and Aunt that the people in London are very friendly and will welcome him upon his arrival. All three bears planned to visit London someday. They just never got around to go. Even so, when a big earthquake rattles their world and destroys their tree home, the young bear’s aunt decides it’s time for Paddington to sail away to London on his own. She assures him he will find a new family who will love and care for him. She packs him a basket filled with jars of marmalade and takes him to the port where he stows away in a lifeboat. Upon his arrival, he does everything his Auntie told him to do, politely saying ’hello’ to everyone, but things don’t go well until he is noticed by the Brown family, headed by Hugh Bonneville (the lord of TVs “Downton Abbey.”) He tells his wife and children that the bear can only stay overnight, and must be placed in the morning. However, it doesn’t take long for the family to care about this little bear with the big, soulful eyes. Paddington gets into all sorts of trouble, mainly because he doesn’t understand how things work in a civilized home. For example, water in the tub turns on, but he doesn’t know how to shut it off. Despite his misadventures, Mrs. Brown is determined to help Paddington find the English explorer who befriended his family in Peru and taught them all how to speak. Dressed in his hat from home, plus a little blue coat given to him

by Mrs. Brown, Paddington and Mr. Brown go to the library to try to locate the professor, a noted explorer, but to their surprise, there is no information available. The reason why is all part of the story. Things really go wrong for the little bear when Nicole Kidman, a taxidermist, learns of his arrival in London. In no time, she sets out to trap him. At this point, the story takes all sorts of twists and turns as the family tries to help Paddington find his explorer friend. And things go really wrong when Nicole tracks Paddington down. Will he be able to get away from her diabolical clutches? Along with the jeopardy, there is plenty of fun as the family starts to become attached to the warm hearted, trusting little bear from Peru. After the movie, I found myself wanting to look for a Paddington bear to take home, and I am sure there is plush Paddington bear waiting for me in a toy store somewhere. “Paddington,” rated PG for some mild action and rude humor, it is a charming film the whole family can enjoy together. Critics, myself included, have been roaring about this delightful little romp. Rolling Stone calls it “Irresistible and funny,” Los Angeles Times says it’s “Wondrous” and I join the chorus of praise by adding “It’s adorable.”

The story is woven together by about 20-25 pop songs from the ‘60s and ‘70s with hits from like “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and “Sugar Pie, Honeybunch” which will be more familiar to the older crowd than to the kids. The plot is a bit like “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” with a love potion that causes the fairies to fall in love with the first creature they see if they are sprinkled with it. There’s a moral of sorts woven into the not so stimulating plot which is: Beauty, like love, is in the eyes •••••••••••••• and hearts of the beholder. “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” with a title almost as long as the movie, is lots of fun for kids of all ages. Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Judith Viorst, it follows the misadventures of Alexander, who has the worst day of his young life at school. He wonders if he is the only one in his family to have such bad luck and the very next day his whole family undergoes their own terrible day. The film stars Steve Carell, and Jennifer Garner as the parents with Ed Oxenbould as Alexander.

and the Childhood Obesity Prevention Alliance to help bring attention and awareness to this issue over the last three years.” The Nutrition Olympics is designed to introduce students to the benefits of having an active lifestyle. Staying active can even help children prevent future health issues. Children who stay physically active are also more likely to be successful in school. The Westmorland Union Elementary School consists of approximately 350 students, but only kindergarten through third grade were selected to attend the Nutrition Olympics. The students participated in various physical activities such as tug of war, potato sack races, ring toss, light weight lifting, balance balls,

Top-tier Artists’ Sorcery Showcased on Latest Efforts

Genre-defying artists The Decemberists, The Church, Steve Earle & The Dukes, and Dengue Fever keep moving ahead on most-recent releases.

Artist: The Decemberists Title: What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World (Capitol Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Shins, Ron Sexsmith, The Decemberists’ previous albums Tell me more: The Decemberists continue to write and craft recordings that blend accessible song craft and artistic excellence. On the outstanding “What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World,” the Portland, Oregon group finds a way to bolster the track listing with the most accessible of baroque pop (“Cavalry Captain”), folk (“Carolina Low”), early ‘60s-minded retro pop (“Philomena,” “Easy Come,

Easy Go”), folk rock (“The Wrong Year”) and genre-smashing rock (“Mistral,” “Make You Better”). Information: decemberists.com.

Artist: The Church Title: Further/Deeper (Unorthodox) You might like if you enjoy: The Cure, Interpol, Echo & the Bunnymen Tell me more: The Church’s 25th album “Further/Deeper” was actually released in the band’s native Australia in October 2014, but is only getting its official release here in the U.S. in February 2015. Lead singer-bassist Steve Kilbey and company have conjured up another epic effort, with driving guitar-anchored tracks (the magical “Vanishing Man” and “Globe Spinning”), introspective tracks wrapped in boundless swirling neo-psychedelic textures (“Pride Before a Fall,” “Delirious,”

“Love Philtre”) and even dreamy folk (“Laurel Canyon”). The Church is embarking on a North American Tour later this month, including an upcoming date at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on Feb. 27. Information: TheChurchBand.net.

is a bona fide celebration of postRobert Johnson Delta blues. Whether performing Mississippi blues (“Ain’t Nobody’s Daddy Now,” “Gamblin’ Blues”), pensive modern folk blues (“Better Off Alone”) or blues rock (“Go Go Boots Are Back,” “King of the Blues”), Earle’s latest batch of originals are rendered with a richness that draws comparisons with the excellent Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite 2013 collaboration “Get Up!” Steve Earle will be one of the featured artists at the upcoming Stagegoach Festival coming to Indio the last weekend in April. Earle is set to perform at the festival on Friday, April 24. Information: NewWestRecords. com and StagecoachFestival. com.

Artist: Steve Earle & The Dukes Title: Terraplane (New West Records) You might like if you enjoy: Townes Van Zandt, Robert Johnson, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite’s “Get Up!” Tell me more: Eventually, everybody seems to get the blues. Look no further than the latest release from Steve Earle & The Dukes. While best known for his celebrated string of alt-country, roots rock and Artist: Dengue Fever Americana releases stretching Title: The Deepest Lake back to 1986, Earle’s “Terraplane” (Tuk Tuk Records)

You might like if you enjoy: Dengue Fever’s first four albums Tell me more: Returning with their first new album since 2011’s “Cannibal Courtship,” Dengue Fever’s “The Deepest Lake” marks another move forward for the Los Angeles-based troupe. It’s unlikely any other ensemble has ever mixed-up vintage Cambodian rock, surf guitar and Stax horns, ‘60s garage rock, and African percussion in an endless and intoxicating blend that melds Western and World music styles. Those looking for infectious pop will find it via “Rom Say Sok.” Elsewhere, lovers of ‘60s Cambodian sounds will revel in the lush beauty of ‘Ghost Voice’ and the indie pop gem “Deepest Lake on the Planet,” both featuring soprano Chhom Nimol’s soaring vocals. You Ask. We Investigate. Military Jet Noise ÂŽ

By Angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS -- People say the number of military jets going to Palm Springs International Airport is increasing. Over the weekend, multiple residents emailed and called KMIR asking us to investigate. Craig from Rancho Mirage asked us Saturday, “why all the fighter jets flying over yesterday and today! “It pretty much shakes the house, said Palm Springs resident, Rod Bruce. Bruce says the number of military jets has picked up

over the last few weeks. “Last year there was a period where it was real bad and there were a lot of complaints from different people, and that lessened for quite a while, then it started to pick up again, said Bruce. Back in 2011, we reported on the increased noise and amount of military jets in Palm Springs. After efforts of local elected officials the traffic decreased, but neighbors say the past weekend the noise was a nuisance. “Much more than we have

in the past, we had them a few years ago, and I think the town complained, and I think things got a little better but boy this weekend was really loud, said Dottie Watson of Palm Springs. Officials from the Marine base in Twentynine Palms told KMIR the aircraft were most likely theirs. They are in the middle of a big training exercise that started in mid-January, and will last for 30 days with people coming in to train from other bases. “I understand the reason for them, and I think some of it

is okay, I think they have to cut back a little bit, said Watson. The Sunmor neighborhood in Palm Springs by the airport has a long history with military aircraft, there is still a tiedown from the Palm Springs Army Air Field back during World War II. “This was the tiedown for planes during Patton, and I heard, I don’t know whether it’s true that Farrell used to be a runway, said Watson. The Palm Springs Air Museum confirmed with us that Farrell Drive was at one time a runway.

Since then, the city of course has grown and neighbors hope the jets quiet down. “I’ve been in the military myself, I understand you have to do these things, but we would enjoy it if they didn’t come as often, said Bruce. Once again, the Marine Corps says the aircraft were probably theirs. They say if people have complaints they can call Michael King at 760-830-3735, or they can make a sound report on w w w. 2 9 p a l m s . m a r i n e s . m i Source KMIR

By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT (February 2, 2015) – The Palm Desert Campus of California State University, San Bernardino will more than triple in size following the recent approval of a land transfer from the City of Palm Desert. The CSU

Board of Trustees recognized the move on January 28 following a unanimous vote by the Palm Desert City Council on January 8. The campus currently occupies 53 acres along Cook Street that was given to the University by the City of Palm

Desert in 2001. The City’s most recent contribution is an additional 113 acres contiguous to the current campus and bordering on Frank Sinatra and Gerald Ford drives. “With this gift of land, the City of Palm Desert is proud to help lay the groundwork for the expansion of Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus,â€? said Palm Desert Mayor Susan Marie Weber. “A larger campus will bring greater access to higher education for Coachella Valley residents, spur regional economic growth, and help develop our greatest asset – the minds of the students who attend this wonderful center of learning and culture.â€? “This is wonderful news for all the Coachella Valley and its students. We are grateful and deeply appreciative for the Palm Desert City Council’s support as well as the CSU’s Board of Trustees,â€? said CSUSB President TomĂĄs D. Morales. “The city’s long-term commitment has made possible a permanent home for the Coachella Valley’s only four-year public university, as well as support for current and future generations of the Valley’s students.â€? The university will soon conduct a comprehensive physical master plan of the newly expanded Palm Desert Campus to best plan for the next phases of growth, said Palm Desert

Campus Dean Sharon BrownWelty. “We will focus on building a university community that can serve and grow with the region for decades to come. None of this would have been possible without the tremendous support of our host city as well as friends and philanthropists in the community. We are forever grateful. BrownWelty said. Currently the Palm Desert Campus (PDC) consists of four buildings: the Mary Stuart Rogers Gateway Building, the Indian Wells Center for Educational Excellence, the Indian Wells Theater and the Palm Desert

Health Sciences Building. Roughly 1,100 students are enrolled in bachelors, masters and doctoral programs. The Palm Desert Campus, which opened its doors in fall 2002 by accepting transfer students primarily from the College of the Desert, is a remarkable example of public-private partnerships, built exclusively from a community of philanthropists and civic leaders. In the fall of 2013, the first freshman class made it the region’s only four-year university. Visit the campus website at www.pdc.csusb.edu.

Charles Manson Marriage License to Expire Without a Wedding By Scott Smith Associated Press FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - A 26-year-old woman with the nickname Star who says she is going to marry 80-year-old mass murderer Charles Manson will have to wait a while longer. Afton Elaine Burton and Manson got a marriage license last year to stage a wedding inside a visiting room at California State Prison, Corcoran. However, it expires Thursday, meaning they missed their chance to tie the knot over the weekend, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Jeffrey Callison said Monday. Weddings are not held on weekdays at the prison. If the wedding is ever going to happen, the couple must

register for a new Kings County marriage license. Burton, who says she loves Manson, left her home In Illinois and has spent the last nine years living near the Central California prison. Manson was convicted of killing seven people, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski. Burton, who maintains websites espousing Manson’s innocence, has not responded to recent requests seeking comment on the relationship. Shortly after obtaining the license, she told The Associated Press the nuptials were imminent: “Y’all can know that it’s true,” she said in November. “It’s going to happen.” The expiring license indicates

that Burton intends to take Manson’s last name, if they are married. James McGrath, a New York City photo agency editor, said he maintains contact with Burton and she intends to obtain another 90-day license and go ahead with the marriage. Manson became notorious in 1969 as the leader of a “family” of young killers. Manson follower Susan Atkins died of cancer behind bars, but Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkel remain imprisoned. So do Charles “Tex” Watson, Bruce Davis and Robert Beausoleil, who is expected to have a parole hearing Feb. 19. Manson is eligible for parole next in 2027. Source KMIR

Woman Accused of Leaving Baby in Trash Ruled Incompetent Court-ordered evaluations found that Alicia Englert, 23, is mentally disabled and has an IQ too low for her to legally stand trial on a felony attempted murder charge, lawyer Josie Brumfield said. Utah law says a defendant must have an IQ of 70 to face trial. Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills said Englert will enter treatment. The judge set a new hearing date for June 8 to re-assess whether she’s become competent for trial. Englert had a difficult childhood, Brumfield said. Her mother went to prison when she was about 18 months old, and though she was able to finish high school, a single in-depth conversation shows she didn’t function at typical adult level. “She kind of got lost in the cracks, really didn’t get any help or treatment,” Brumfield said. By Lindsay Whitehurst newborn baby to die in a trash An attorney for Englert’s Associated Press can near Salt Lake City is not parents called for the charge SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A mentally competent to stand trial, to be dismissed. “She doesn’t woman accused of leaving her a Utah judge ruled Monday. understand the gravity of what

took place, and the finding of incompetency confirms that,” Jessica Peterson said. Alicia Englert has not entered a plea. She appeared in court with her parents wearing a black jacket and green blouse, and did not take questions from reporters. She remained free on bail after Monday’s hearing, and state authorities will evaluate Englert to decide what form her treatment will take, Brumfield said. Prosecutors will take another look at the case to decide what happens next, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said. In some cases, defendants are able to face charges after treatment, but sometimes the setback for prosecutors is permanent, he said. Court documents say Englert gave birth in a bathroom at her home in the Salt Lake City suburb of Kearns and left the baby girl without food or medical care for a day before wrapping her in a

towel and abandoning her in the trash on Aug. 26. Prosecutors say the infant would have died if she had not been found by a neighbor who thought she heard a cat purring in the garbage. She was suffering from hypothermia, respiratory distress and a blood-borne infection when she was found. Father Robert Englert said at the time that his daughter had a learning disability and didn’t understand the pregnancy or the implications of abandoning the baby. The girl was flown to a hospital and placed on a ventilator, but she recovered and is being adopted. Hruby-Mills granted a supervised 90-minute goodbye visit for Englert and her family in December, a fairly common allowance for parents whose rights are terminated after their children are taken into state custody. Homeowner Speaks to KMIR about Shooting Intruder

By Angela Monroe BERMUDA DUNES -We’re learning more about the fatal shooting of an intruder at a Bermuda Dunes home over the weekend. The coroner’s office says 32-year-old Cesar Garcia of Indio died after the home’s owner shot him inside his home. We spent the day out in that Bermuda Dunes neighborhood, and spoke with the homeowner. The homeowner is clearly emotional after what happened. He didn’t want to go on

camera, but he did speak with us about the terrifying night. He says he shot the man inside his home trying to protect his 9-year-old daughter and wife. He says was on the sleeping on the couch, as they were getting ready for a garage sale at 5am. He heard someone trying to break in through his front door, and then the suspect must have jumped a wall, and broke through his sliding glass door getting into his home. The homeowner says police

told him right before that the suspect also tried to break into a 70-year-old woman’s home less than a block away. We knocked on many doors, and spoke with many neighbors Monday. Nobody was willing to go on camera, but several did tell me they would have done exactly what their neighbor did. It was 3:30 am on Saturday when deputies received multiple 9-1-1 calls about a prowler in the area of Maroon Town Drive. As officers were on the way,

they received another call from a woman about a block away reporting that her husband had just shot an intruder inside their home on Adams Street. Deputies say they moved the distraught family to safety, and found the Cesar Garcia still inside the home with two gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he died several hours later. As we mentioned, the homeowner was clearly traumatized by the shooting. He told us he’s run the scenario through his head many times, and he was just trying to protect his family. Meantime, the sheriff’s department says the homeowner and his family is cooperating fully, and nobody has been arrested. When it comes to selfdefense, California has it’s own type of “Castle Doctrine,” as in your home is your castle. The state’s penal code 198.5 says you can use deadly force to stop an intruder when you are in fear of your own life, or that of a member of your family. Source KMIR

S P O RT S Blackhawks, Aztecs Tied For First With Two to Play BY DANIEL MARINELLI

LA QUINTA – If both teams take care of business in their next games, the La Quinta Blackhawks and Palm Desert Aztecs will face-off this Friday, the final night of the regular season, to decide the Desert Valley League championship. With a senior-heavy team, the Blackhawks (8-2 in DVL, 15-7 Overall) are having its best season since head coach Jeff Hepner took over years ago. If not for an exciting double-overtime defeat of the game-back Palm Springs Indians last week, La Quinta would be on the outside looking up. The Indians do have a minute chance of winning the league title but require upset losses from both top teams – highly unlikely. Back in January, the Aztecs (8-2 in DVL, 14-10 Overall) bested the Blackhawks by three points, giving Palm Desert the critical tiebreaker. The Aztecs traveled to Xavier Prep High School on Tuesday*, a game Palm Desert will likely win. La Quinta, however, will

welcome the sporadic, nothingto-lose Cathedral City Lions to their nest today. Head coach Jeff Hepner’s Blackhawks team is bigger, more cohesive and has the confidence knowing senior big men Kameron Dashner and Jared Broadhead took it to the Lions by ten points in Cathedral City earlier in the season. If Lions backcourt Orlando Wallace and Darrien Broom get hot beyond the three-point line, it could be a long night for the Blackhawks. A loss would be costly, and assuming the Aztecs beat the Saints, La Quinta would be a game back and could atbest get a co-championship with the defending DVL champions from Palm Desert. By owning the tiebreaker, the Aztecs are in the driver’s seat once again. Don Brady is no longer the coach but the program he left is succeeding under new head coach James Serven. Usually, teams need a year or two to adapt to a new coach’s system but in the Aztecs’ case, they are already competing for league titles. On Friday, the Blackhawks travel to Palm Desert where Happy Hour 4pm -6pm the Aztecs have not lost to La Quinta since the 2008 season. Additionally, the Aztecs have not Full Service Hair Salon lost a league game at home in over two years. ELIZABETH The Blackhawks will have 760-288-1397 their hands more than full this Tues, Wed. and Thursday week. In addition to beating the 12527 Palm Dr. Desert Hot Springs, CA 92240 Lions, Dashner and co. will have

to beat the Aztecs to win the league title outright. “This is for first place. It’s DVL. Everything counts and we all just have to step it up,” Dashner said after the Palm Springs game last week. The La Quinta senior leader will be bringing that same mentality into the final two games of the season.

Who: La Quinta Blackhawks vs. Palm Desert Aztecs What: Desert Valley League championship Where: Palm Desert High School When: Friday, 6:30 pm Blackhawks To Watch: Kameron Dashner (#23), Jared Broadhead (#24), Marcelo Zepeda (#25) Aztecs To Watch: Aaron Cordero (#3), Anthony Murdica (#23) For more on sports in the Coachella Valley, follow Dan on Twitter @dsmarine7. * Score unavailable at time of press deadline.
