Protect California Desert Death Valley. Photo by Bryn Jones

By Desert Star Staff Bill would expand Death Valley, Joshua Tree N.P. and protect lands for recreation, wildlife and tourism community; business and conservation leaders from the California desert region are applauding legislation introduced by Senator Dianne Feinstein (CA) that would increase protections for

approximately 1.6 million acres of desert landscapes. The legislation is co-sponsored by Senator Barbara Boxer (CA). The proposed legislation, the California Desert Conservation and Recreation Act of 2015, would establish two brand new national monuments—the Mojave Trails and the Sand to Snow National Monuments—and expand Joshua

Tree and Death Valley National Parks and the Mojave National Preserve. It would also designate several fresh wilderness areas, help protect important waterways like the Amargosa River and Deep Creek as Wild and Scenic Rivers, and establish the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area. A Natural and Cultural Treasure

From painted mountains to hidden springs, from worldfamous wildflowers to herds of majestic bighorn sheep, Americans and international visitors have long been drawn to the stark beauty of California’s desert. The legislation introduced by Sen. Feinstein provides a historic opportunity to protect California’s spectacular desert

heritage for future generations. “The conservation of the California desert honors our past and also recognizes the importance of these lands for future generations,” stated Barbara Durham, Tribal Preservation Officer of the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe. “The desert includes trails Continues on Page 3

2015 Grammy Awards

By Leanne Italie Associated Press Grammys newcomer Sam Smith looked dapper in a white bow tie and Madonna rocked one of the season’s most eclectic red carpets Sunday in a bedazzled two-corner black hat, burlesqueesque corset look with matching thigh high boots. Fashion is always a little crazy at the Grammys, guys included, but first-time nominee Smith soaked it all up in a more traditional tuxedo as he managed his nerves going up against some of his idols. Madonna’s big-shouldered shorty outfit was custom Givenchy couture by Riccardo

Tisci. She wore not much underneath, flashing a black thong and fishnets at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. She wasn’t a hit with some in the Twitter peanut gallery: “Just got a glimpse of Madonna arriving. Seems to be channeling some mix of the Duchess of Windsor and Mae West,” one chimed in. Beyonce and Miley Cyrus went for black - Cyrus in strategic, sexy cutouts and the queen in a low-V neck embellished look with a train from Proenza Schouler. Audacious singer-actress Joy Villa was encaged in revealing bright orange, and it was unclear how Sia could see under her huge shaggy white wig.

Brandy Clark showed off a killer pair of metallic silver Prada pumps under a sparkly, secondskin silver-and-black gown, while Nick Jonas chatted hands in pockets of a light gray tweed suit with a touch of yellow and ultra-skinny trousers. How’s Clark handling newfound fame and regular everyday life? “Squeeze myself into this dress, for starters,” she told The Associated Press. Ariana Grande had her signature high ponytail in place, wearing a white and silver, oneshoulder Versace with a cut out back - Big Sean by her side. “I’m Continues on Page 4

The evening started with a Live Steel Drum entrainment

prior to dinner. Several hundred guests attended this fun event. The theme was a tropical setting with more events throughout the night. Beach comer attire was suggested and many wore colorful flower leis, Hawaiian shirts and dresses. Honoree Peggy Cravens and co-chair Jean C. Carrus

Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert held its annual, Singing the Praises, Gala on Feb. 6th at the Aqua Caliente Casino Resort Spa. This year the praises went to philanthropist, Humanitarian, leader and member of the Opera Guild, Peggy Cravens. Peggy continues to nurture and support young opera singers and pianists. So many have benefited tremendously from her generous contributions to that effort. The Guild wanted to make sure everyone knew of Peggy Craven’s lifetime of achievements by

honoring her this year. Friends gathered at this gala to honor Peggy and “Sing her Praises.” The Lobby was filled with admirer’s congratulating her on this honor during the cocktail hour. Co-Chair Jean C. Carrus announced the evening’s events and told everyone to enjoy their dinner before the entertainment started. Other co-chairs were William Fisher and Marie Staudhammer with Honorary Chairs, Paula and Fern Kozlen. A video extolling the many virtues of Peggy Cravens was shown prior to the singers taking the stage to perform. Peggy spends many hours each week at the task of fund-

raising for the many non-profit charities in the Desert. Peggy is the past President of the COD foundation, President of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition and wears many hats for her other favorite causes. Her individual donations have made a major impact on the schools and arts in the Coachella Valley. The entertainers of the evening were Michelle Bradley and Moises Salazar. Mona Lands was the pianist for the singers, and she is the Music Director for the Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert. The evening ended with dancing to the Pat McCaffrey and the Whiz Kids Band

Possibly even keeping AIDS at bay with all the new research to combat the disease in the works. The Gala is held to honor those people that have made such an impact in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Dr. Michael Gottlieb was honored with the Science and Medicine Awards as he is such a legend in HIV/ AIDS research and treatment. Sen. Barbara Boxer presented the 100 Women Award to our own local Angel of the Desert, Helene Galen, who has given so much to the Coachella Valley and beyond. and destroys their tree home, the young bear’s aunt decides it’s time for Paddington to sail away to London on his own. She assures him he will find a new family who will love and care for him. She packs him a basket filled with jars of marmalade and takes him to the port where he stows away in a lifeboat. Upon his arrival, he does everything his Auntie told him to do, politely saying ’hello’ to everyone, but things don’t go well until he is noticed by the Brown family, headed by Hugh Bonneville (the lord of TVs “Downton Abbey.”) He tells his wife and children that the bear can only stay overnight, and must be placed in the morning. However, it doesn’t take long for the family to care about this little bear with the big, soulful eyes. Paddington gets into all sorts of trouble, mainly because he doesn’t understand how things work in a civilized home. For example, water in the tub turns on, but he doesn’t know how to shut it off. Despite his misadventures, Mrs. Brown is determined to help Paddington find the English explorer who befriended his family in Peru and taught them all how to speak. Dressed in his hat from home, plus a little blue coat given to him by Mrs. Brown, Paddington and Mr. Brown go to the library to try to locate the professor, a noted explorer, but to their surprise, there is no information available. The reason why is all part of the story. Things really go wrong for the little bear when Nicole Kidman, a taxidermist, learns of his arrival in London. In no time, she sets out to trap him. At this point, the story takes all sorts of twists and turns as the family tries to help Paddington find his explorer friend. And things go really wrong when Nicole tracks Paddington down. Will he be able to get away from her diabolical clutches? Along with the jeopardy, there is plenty of fun as the family starts to become attached to the warm hearted,

trusting little bear from Peru. After the movie, I found myself wanting to look for a Paddington bear to take home, and I am sure there is plush Paddington bear waiting for me in a toy store somewhere. “Paddington,” rated PG for some mild action and rude humor, it is a charming film the whole family can enjoy together. Critics, myself included, have been roaring about this delightful little romp. Rolling Stone calls it “Irresistible and funny,” Los Angeles Times says it’s “Wondrous” and I join the chorus of praise by adding “It’s adorable.”

“Strange Magic” is a strange animated fairy tale indeed. Created by George Lucas of “Star Wars” fame, it’s a tale about a magical kingdom divided into two parts. The winged fairies live in a lush area filled with beautiful meadows and flowers. The bog king (voiced by Alan Cumming) lives in the dark, underground section, offlimits to the fairies and trolls. The story is woven together by about 20-25 pop songs from the ‘60s and ‘70s with hits from like “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and “Sugar Pie, Honeybunch” which will be more familiar to the older crowd than to the kids. By Pam Price Recognizing desert leaders has as been nonstop this month. One of the highlights as the 6th Annual Awards Gala presented by the Palm Springs Black History Committee on Feb. 7th at the Hyatt Regency Suites in Palm Springs. Jarvis Crawford, chairman of the Black History Committee welcomed guests to the Gala attended by friends and family involved with Black History Month and how prominently it has been represented in the community. The Awards Ceremony was perfectly choreographed with Zynisha Clary singing “One Night Only,” so apropos for this elegant evening.

Melisse Banwer, Executive Director of the Tolerance Education Center in Rancho Mirage was presented with the Humanitarian Award with the Sports Award recipient, Dan Murphy accepting the honor as the head coach at Palm Springs High School. The James O. Jessie Life time Achievement Award was presented to Bob Silva, artist and activist. The Morongo Valley fire Department efforts to raise funds to purchase a much-needed new fire engine made the story again when the Rancho Mirage City Council presented them a check for $1000 during their monthly meeting on Feb. 12, accepting the check on behalf

of the firefighters was Jock J. Johnson, Fire Chief with Donna Munoz, General Manager of the Morongo Valley Community Services District and Fire Department. In accepting the check both Fire Chief Johnson and Ms. Munoz expressed their appreciation for the donation, which brings them closer to purchasing a state-of-the-art fire truck much needed to handle the emergencies along Highway 62 through Morongo Valley. Blackhawks, Aztecs Tied For First With Two to Play LA QUINTA – If both teams take care of business in their next games, the La Quinta Blackhawks and Palm Desert Aztecs will face-off this Friday, the final night of the regular season, to decide the Desert Valley League championship. With a senior-heavy team, the Blackhawks (8-2 in DVL, 15-7 Overall) are having its best season since head coach Jeff Hepner

took over years ago. If not for an exciting double-overtime defeat of the game-back Palm Springs Indians last week, La Quinta would be on the outside looking up. The Indians do have a minute chance of winning the league title but require upset losses from both top teams – highly unlikely. Back in January, the Aztecs (8-2 in DVL, 14-10 Overall) bested the Blackhawks by three points,

big men Kameron Dashner and Jared Broadhead took it to the Lions by ten points in Cathedral City earlier in the season. If Lions backcourt Orlando Wallace and Darrien Broom get hot beyond the three-point line, it could be a long night for the Blackhawks. A loss would be costly, and assuming the Aztecs beat the Saints, La Quinta would be a game back and could atbest get a co-championship with the defending DVL champions from Palm Desert. By owning the tiebreaker, the Aztecs are in the driver’s seat once again. Don Brady is no longer the coach but the program he left is succeeding under new head coach James Serven. Usually, teams need a year or two to adapt to a new coach’s system but in the Aztecs’ case, they are already competing for league titles. On Friday, the Blackhawks travel to Palm Desert where the Aztecs have not lost to La Quinta since the 2008 season. Additionally, the Aztecs have not lost a league game at home in over two years. The Blackhawks will have their hands more than full this

week. In addition to beating the Lions, Dashner and co. will have to beat the Aztecs to win the league title outright. “This is for first place. It’s DVL. Everything counts and we all just have to step it up,” Dashner said after the Palm Springs game last week. The La Quinta senior leader will be bringing that same mentality into the final two games of the season. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call Auction.com at 800.280.2832 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address www.Auction.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA0800467414-1. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW. STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 014909-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. FOR SALES INFORMATION: (844) 477-7869 CLEAR RECON CORP.
