By Desert Star Staff Start off this Valentine’s Day weekend with a Friday, February 14th Valentine’s Day tour of the home where Elvis and Priscilla lived and honeymooned on May 1, 1967. People Magazine proclaimed their courtship and marriage as “one of the ten greatest romances of the 20th century.” Recently, another marriage proposal was accepted at this great estate. There is something exceptional about this romantic setting and it’s-ambiance. Bring a ‘special someone’ and hear the great history of Palm Springs with our tour guides. Walk in the place where Elvis made history and the news of daughter, Lisa Marie, being born nine months later to the day. Valentine treats, and chocolates will be available. Two tours are scheduled at 1pm and 3:30pm: A very special Priscilla Presley Tribute Artist, Darling Presley, will present the 1pm tour and Anthony Alvarez, former KMIR TV personality, known as the “Aloha King Elvis” for the 3:30pm tour. Our tours are 5-stars on Trip Advisor. The Wall Street Journal labeled us as “Greetings from Elvis’s Palm Springs home.” Time Magazine, Travel Channel, AAA Westways, Fodor’s Travel

Guide, have all heralded the property. The Desert Sun states, “The number-one spot to have your picture taken.” The estate is located at 1350 Ladera Circle in Vista Las Palmas is the major showcase of the city. Four concentric circles, three stories, 5500 sq. feet put on a pedestal of rocks, is something to see! There are three tours a day for Modernism Week, beginning February 15th and culminating on the 23rd. Tour times are 10:30am, 1pm and 3:30pm. Tickets are $30 per person. The London doubleDecker bus drives up to the location several times each day to witness it’s splendor. The home features the first ‘round’ home construction in Palm Springs... there are no square rooms in it. The home pre-dates the Bob Hope House and the Elrod House, where the James Bond movie “Diamonds Are Forever” was filmed. Take full advantage on Wednesday February 19th and Saturday February 22nd to hear popular desert celebrity author, Eric Meeks, signing his books and lecturing at the estate. ‘Wadjda’—A Saudi Girl With a Dream

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman “Wadjda,” from Sony Pictures Classics, tells the story of a 10-year-old girl named Wadjda, who is determined to have a bicycle of her own. That sounds like an easy dream to fulfill, but not for this feisty young Saudi-Arabian youngster living in a country dominated by men who practice and enforce strict Muslim rules. Even her loving and doting mother is against the plan because in their society riding a bicycle could damage a young girl’s virtue. (Dr. Oz, tell them it isn’t so!) “Wadjda” is the initial feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia. Even more amazing is the fact

that it was written and directed by Haifaa Al Mansour, Saudi Arabia’s first female filmmaker. “Wadjda” also marks Saudi Arabia’s original submission for Oscar’s consideration in the Foreign Language Category. The film didn’t get a 2014 Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film, but being entered in the 2014 race is still a major achievement for this Middle Eastern nation. Waad Mohammed’s stars as Wadjda and popular Saudi television personality Reem Abdullah, in her first feature film role, plays Wadjda’s sympathetic but cautious mother. “Wadjda,” a simple tale about a determined child who will stop at nothing to pursue her dream of owning a bicycle, takes Western viewers behind closed doors, revealing what life is like when the veil is removed. There is obvious love between Wadjda’s parents, but we soon sense a tension in their relationship caused by the fact their only child is a daughter, not a son. We also see that there are definite rules young girls, and women must adhere to: never go out without a head scarf, at no time be alone with a man who is not your husband and never ride a bicycle lest you damage your virginity. While this sounds rather grim, there are comedic moments as well. It is obvious that Wadjda’s father loves her, and she has also captured the playful heart of the young neighbor boy who sometimes lets her ride his bicycle when no one is looking. However, Wadja wants a bike of her own, so she can do race her friend—and win. The clever Wadjda secretly forges a plan to make money for her coveted bike. She also

tells the kindly owner of the bicycle shop that he must not sell “her” bike until she can pay for it herself. Will he comply? One way she seeks to earn the needed cash is by winning a contest sponsored by her all-girls school. To win she must be able to quote and sing key verses from the Koran and answer historical

By Desert Star Staff NILAND, Calif. – Today, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station arrest two suspected narcotics smugglers and seized more than 13 pounds of methamphetamine concealed inside a compartment within the vehicle. The incident occurred at approximately 6 a.m., when Border Patrol agents encountered a 27-year-old man driving a green 1995 Honda Accord, along with a 47-year-old male passenger as they approached the Highway 111 checkpoints located near Niland, Calif. A Border Patrol Canine Detection team alerted to the vehicle, and the driver was

referred to secondary for further inspection. During the inspection, agents discovered multiple individually wrapped packages of methamphetamine hidden inside a natural void behind the radio underneath the dashboard of the vehicle. The methamphetamine had a combined weight of 13.99 pounds with an estimated street value of more than $167,000. The driver, a United States citizen, and the passenger, a Lawful Permanent Resident from Mexico was taken into custody. The men, vehicle, and methamphetamine were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation. www.desertstarweekly.com

Aztecs Take First in DVL; Second Place is Up For Grabs By Dan Marinelli

Xavier Prep High School Saints 61 Indio High School Rajahs 49

La Quinta High School Palm Desert High School Blackhawks 77 Cathedral Aztecs 80 Coachella Valley City High School Lions 57 High School Arabs 44

PALM DESERT – Three weeks ago, the Saints (6-5 in DVL, 11-11 Overall) were in the bottom half of the DVL standings – until a loss against Palm Springs High School sparked a four-game winning streak with their most-recent victory coming against the Rajahs (6-4 in DVL, 16-8 Overall) last Thursday. Despite winning five of their last six games, the Rajahs could not overcome a three-point, the third quarter deficit, that eventually – due to an uninspired fourth quarter offensive performance – ballooned into a 12-point loss. In spite of Xavier Prep holding Senior Night, Saints junior guard Joseph Dreisbach led both teams in scoring with 21 points. Senior guard Gabriel Dreisbach, however, scored 10 fourth quarter points and finished with a total of 13 for the Saints. Rajahs senior guard Isaiah Thomas ended the game with 18 points. By defeating the Rajahs, Xavier Prep maintained fourth place in league and have a slight chance to steal second place from the La Quinta High School Blackhawks. The Saints only need Indio to lose one of their last two, and the Blackhawks to lose their next, and final game against the undefeated league-leaders – the Palm Desert High School Aztecs. On Feb. 11, the Rajahs welcomed the struggling Cathedral City High School Lions. The Saints traveled to Thermal to take on the lowly Coachella Valley High School Arabs on Feb. 11. On Feb. 13, the Rajahs will have Senior night at Indio High School against the Coachella Valley High School Arabs

CATHEDRAL CITY – Despite staying within reach of the Blackhawks (7-5 in DVL, 13-12 Overall) for most of the game at Cathedral City High School; a 10-point fourth quarter shut the door on a desperate Lions team that has now lost three straight games. Cathedral City’s defense had suspect all season, and last Thursday’s game was no exception. Although they were behind 51-41 entering the final quarter, Cathedral City did not get blown out in a single quarter until La Quinta scored 26 points in the fourth quarter. In addition to their lackluster finish, the Lions allowed three Blackhawks to score in double figures. Junior Kameron Dashner scored an impressive, season-high, 28 points for the Blackhawks – significantly higher than his season average of 11.7 points per game. Blackhawks Captain and senior forward Jojo Wiggins scored 17 points and grabbed nine boards; teammate Charles Hays added 11 points and an aggressive 13 rebounds. With just one-game and half-game leads over Indio and Xavier Prep, respectively, for the Blackhawks to hang on to second place, their last game against the DVL-leading, and rival, Palm Desert High School Aztecs is, essentially, a must-win. If the Blackhawks lose to the Aztecs and Xavier Prep win their latest two games, the Saints will take over second place. For Indio to take second in the DVL, they need to win both of their final games, and Xavier Prep and La Quinta must lose their last game. On Feb. 11, Cathedral City traveled to Indio high School to face the Rajahs. Cathedral City ends their season against the Indians at Palm Springs High School on Feb. 13. The Blackhawks attempt to finish their season in second place against the Aztecs, Feb. 13, on Senior Night at La Quinta High School.

THERMAL –Coach Don Brady’s Aztecs (11-0 in DVL, 17-5 Overall) had plenty to celebrate after demolishing the Arabs last Tuesday – mainly – earning their first DVL title since the ’05 – ’06 season. Since losing their final non-league game to the Claremont High School Wolfpack in early January, the Aztecs have rifled off nine straight victories and have unseated the five-time defending DVL champion Palm Springs High School Indians. Additionally, Palm Desert’s current streak is their longest string of wins since they won the DVL title, eight years ago. Tough, tenacious, defense won the DVL championship for the Aztecs. In league-play, Aztecs opponents failed to score over 50 points in nine of their 11 games with the league champs. Even more impressive, Palm Desert defeated their DVL counterparts by an average of 17.5 a game. The Arabs have yet to win a league game and are out of playoff contention until next year. The Aztecs attempt at achieving one last goal – staying undefeated league – resumed Feb. 11, at home, against the former DVL champion Indians. On Feb. 13, the Aztecs play an important game for the rest of the DVL against the second-place Blackhawks at La Quinta High School.
