Child Heart Conditions Present Big Challenges to Families
In Minnesota, an average of 650 babies are born with a heart defect each year. (AHA) By Desert Star Staff Throughout February, various groups in Minnesota are raising awareness of the
importance of heart health. This week, the focus is on children born with heart defects.
As part of National Heart Month, the American Heart Association of Minnesota is getting the word out about
the challenge’s families face when their child is born with a heart condition. Emily Swanson, communications director for the American Heart Association of Minnesota, says the challenges are endless. “A lot of kids that we see have to go through a lot of surgeries when they’re babies and toddlers and into childhood,” she points out. “And so, a lot of those surgeries obviously take a toll on the kid and the family.” And in some cases, she says, children face restrictions on what they can do as they grow. There’s also the stress of waiting for a heart transplant, if the need arises. The association says nationally, 1 in 100 births results in a congenital heart
defect. innesota officials say each year, roughly 650 babies are born with one. Swanson says thanks to advancements in research, many of these children are able to live longer. But she says the complications can often stay with them. “They’re making it into adulthood, but it comes with a variety of new challenges, whether that’s a valve issue, or just different issues present as they get older,” she explains. To learn more about some of the stories of families affected by this issue, visit supportnetwork.heart.org. 5 Tips for Traveling by Air with Children
Spring, for some families, means packing bags and heading to the airport for a getaway. However, flying with young children can be stressful. “New experiences can be exciting for some children, but they can also be frightening, especially if it’s your child’s first time flying, said Linda Nelson, a program developer on KinderCare’s education team. “Talking about what will happen can help your family manage expectations and focus on the fun of travel.” Consider these ideas to help make family airplane travel an enjoyable adventure for everyone. Schedule Flights Smartly: If you have the ability, pic a flight that wor s with your child’s current eating and sleeping schedules. Aim for a flight that occurs between mealtimes, and try to fly during normal naptime. Be Ready for Jet Lag: If you’re going to cross time zones, plan ahead to combat jet lag. Two weeks before traveling, start making small adjustments to your family’s schedule by moving bedtime 20 minutes toward the time zone you’ll be traveling. Wait a few days then adjust your schedule again. When you get to your destination, try to stick to your child’s regular schedule by taking naps and going to bed as close to his or her normal times as possible. Pack the Essentials: At the airport, you’ll want to move nimbly and hands-free, so opt for a backpack as your carry-on. Pack a change of clothes for each member of the family, diaper wipes, tissues, lotion and lip balm. If your child uses a pacifier, attach it to your child’s clothing using a clip. It can help soothe the pressure in his or her ears during takeoff and

landing. Also consider packing books, crayons, markers, pencils, paper, activity books and age-appropriate toys to keep your child occupied. Remember the Snacks: Low blood sugar can turn even the sweetest kids into champion tantrum throwers, so be sure to bring along plenty of healthy snacks in case delays disrupt regular mealtimes. Consider options like homemade granola or protein bars, fresh fruits and veggies, sandwiches or almond-butter pouches. If your flight is long, try to pac snacks that won’t create lots of crumbs you’ll have to live with until you arrive at your destination. Also remember a spill-proof cup or water bottle you can fill before boarding. Mind the Rules: Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) agents are there to help passengers, but there are also rules that must be followed. Consider these airport regulations before traveling: edically necessary liquids like baby formula, baby food, juice and breast milk are not subject to the 3.4-ounce limit. Children under the age of 12 are not required to remove their shoes during screening. If you’re flying within the United States, children under the age of 18 traveling with an adult usually don’t need more identification than a boarding pass. However, some airlines may ask for a birth certificate for lap infants. Call ahead of time to see which documents you need. our child will

Directed by Chuck Yates, The Velocity of Autumn swirls around Alexandra, an 80-yearold artist in a showdown with her family over where she’ll spend her remaining years. In Alexandra’s corner are her wit, her volcanic passion, and the fact that she’s barricaded herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with enough Molotov cocktails to take out the block. But her children have their own secret weapon: estranged son Chris, who returns after 20 years, crawls through Alexandra’s second-floor window and becomes the family’s unlikely mediator. No sooner are the words “Hi, Mom” uttered than the emotional bombs start detonating. The Velocity of Autumn is a wickedly funny and wonderfully touching discovery of the fragility and ferocity of life. The cast is comprised of David Youse in the role of Chris, and Barbara Gruen portraying Alexandra. The production will run nine times including three matinees. A Q&A session with cast members will follow the Thursday matinees. All of Coyote’s awardwinning programming are now under one roof at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, made possible through the generosity of Season Sponsors Patti & Jack Grundhofer, Production Sponsors Steve Tobin and

Tips to Find the Perfect Rental Home
As long as they pay their rent on time, youngsters who rent can build credit for future purchases. Another perk? Unlike apartments, single-family homes offer 3 or more bedrooms -- which means renters have the flexibility to start a family.
By David Howard Roughly 37 percent of American households rent, rather than own, their homes. That’s the highest share in more than 50 years. Increasingly, people are renting simply because it fits their lifestyles better -- not because they can’t afford to buy. Americans are especially floc ing to singlefamily rentals, rather than apartments or duplexes. In fact, the single-family rental industry is the fastest-growing sector of the U.S. housing market, accounting for more than one in three rentals. The industry has grown 30 percent since 2007, double the rate for multifamily rentals. Could a single-family rental be right for you Here are five questions to ask yourself:

of home-ownership. Consider that the median down payment for a home in 2018 was about $15,500 -- while median monthly single-family rent clocks in around $1,600. And singlefamily rentals cost less per square foot than apartments.

1. Would you like a more responsive landlord? It’s often difficult for apartment companies to oversee the hundreds or even thousands of units they manage. So it’s easy for an individual tenant to get lost in the crowd. Landlords who rent out single-family homes are far more responsive. Most own fewer than ten units -- so they’re quic to fix bro en appliances or resolve other issues. And many of the larger single-family rental companies employ experienced property managers who work in teams -- so someone is on-call 24/7. And the Oscar Went to ….
BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman The ratings for this year’s Oscar telecast were lower than last season. But on the plus side, the weather didn’t rain on the Oscar parade. The show began, as always, with a song then proceeded, as did last year’s Oscar telecast, without a host. (We miss you, Johnny Carson.) There were few surprises since the SAG winners also took home the Oscar gold on Sunday. The only huge surprise of the evening was in the Best Picture category when the orean film “Parasite” not only won for best international feature film, it too home the Oscar for best picture of the year, leaving American film nominees out in the cold. This was disappointing; at least it was for me. The other eight Best Picture contenders were “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “JoJo Rabbit,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Joker,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” In the Best Supporting
Actor category, Brad Pitt won for his upbeat portrayal as a stuntman in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Other nominees were: Tom Hanks, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Anthony Hopkins “The Two Popes,” Al Pacino and Joe Pesci “The Irishman.” Laura Dern took home the gold for her supporting role in “Marriage Story” and honored her parents, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, in her acceptance speech. The other contenders were Kathy Bates, “Richard Jewell,” Scarlet Johansson “Jojo Rabbit,” Florence Pugh “Little Women,” and Margot Robbie “Bombshell.” Scarlet Johansson was a double Oscar contender since she was also nominated for her starring role in “Marriage Story.” Other lead actress nominees were Renee Zellweger “Judy,” Cynthia Erivo “Harriet,” Saoirse Ronan “Little Women” and Charlize Theron “Bombshell.” And the Oscar went to Renee Zellweger.
Joaquin Phoenix won in the Best Actor category for his portrayal as the Joker in “Joker.” Also in contention for best actor were Antonio Banderas “Pain and Glory,” Leonardo Dicaprio “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Adam Driver “Marriage Story” and Jonathan Pryce “The Two Popes.” And the Oscar went to “Toy Story 4” for the bestanimated feature film. ther nominees were: “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” “I Lost My Body,” “Klaus,” and “Missing Link.” Best original song honors went to Elton John for “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from “Rocketman. The lyrics were by Bernie Taupin. Hail and Farewell--On Thursday, February 7, acclaimed actor Kirk Douglas left us. He was 103 years old, but still young at heart and spirit. He had a long distinctive career, starring in countless films that included “Paths of Glory,”

By Desert Star Staff The Academy Awards went political straight away as the night’s first winner, Best Supporting Actor Brad Pitt, ‘joked’ his 45-second acceptance speech was ‘45 seconds longer’ than the Senate gave John Bolton in the impeachment trial. Less than 20 minutes into Sunday night’s ceremony, Pitt decided to mention the elephant in the room –
President Donald Trump. While Hollywood award shows have been increasingly criticized for political tirades by filmma ers, that didn’t stop celebrities at the 92nd Academy Awards from continuing the trend. “I only get 45 seconds, but that’s 45 seconds longer than the Senate gave John Bolton,” Pitt said at one point after winning the Best Supporting Actor award for ‘Once Upon
a Time in Hollywood.’ Congratulations, Brad Pitt.”They told me I only have 45 seconds up here — which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week.” — Minh Ngo Democrats were hugely disappointed with Bolton, the former US national security adviser, not being called as a witness in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial,
which ultimately failed. Pitt was quickly criticized on Twitter for putting his Trump dig at the top of his speech, even ahead of mentioning his own children. Brad Pitt gave a shout out to his all-important kids ... but he had to take an anti-Trump swipe first — Christian Toto The rest of Pitt’s speech was thankfully free of politics, with the actor giving a
shout out to his ‘Hollywood’ director Tarantino and the filmma ers who gave him his own start in the industry. I have to hand it to Brad Pitt for coming up with that brave political statement extemporaneously, without any help from various speech-writing agencies that his people definitely did not contact. — Greg Gutfeld
their less acclaimed competitors, including the filmma ers who documented “hospitals in Syria being bombed.” They tried to push Al-Qaeda’s narrative in

City of Desert Hot Springs Notice of Availability: Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the City of Desert Hot Springs General Plan Update Draft EIR The City of Desert Hot Springs has prepared a Draft EIR that analyzes the potential environmental impacts associated with the adoption and long-term implementation of the General Plan Update (GPU). The GPU is organized to address the requirements of California Government Code Sections 65450 through 65457. The Draft EIR includes an analysis of potential environmental impacts associated with implementation of the GPU. Program-level analysis was conducted for the GPU as a whole to account for the broad, cumulative impacts that may occur due to the anticipated, collective redevelopment of the Planning Area. The programmatic analysis focused on the long-term changes that the GPU implies and how those changes can be accommodated to minimize the impacts of land use decisions on the physical environment. The program-level analysis in the EIR is analogous with the cumulative impact analysis required by CEQA. The City of Desert Hot Springs is in the northwestern portion of the Coachella Valley, north of the City of Palm Springs and south of the unincorporated community of Morongo Valley in San Bernardino County. The City is a few miles south of the Riverside County/San Bernardino County boundary. The City is located near the interchange of the I-10 freeway and SR-62 highway. The San Bernardino and Little San Bernardino Mountains bound the City on the west and north while the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains lie further to the southwest and south. Joshua Tree National Park is located immediately to the northeast of the City and the Sand to Snow National Monument is located to the north. The Planning Area consists of the corporate boundaries of the City of Desert Hot Springs and its Sphere of Influence (unincorporated Riverside County). The area within the City’s corporate boundaries total 30.5 square miles and its Sphere of Influence totals 28.8 square miles for a total Planning Area of 59.3 square miles. The General Plan Update is intended to achieve the land use, transportation, housing, and other goals of the City that reflect the community’s growth over the long-term. Table 1 compares 2018 and 2040 land uses for the City of Desert Hot Springs, the Sphere of Influence and the overall Planning Area. The 2040 planning horizon for the Planning Area is estimated at approximately 53,664 dwelling units, 136,402 residents, 20,349,704 building square feet of non-residential uses, and 20,531 jobs. This table shows existing conditions as of 2018 and the projected growth based on the proposed land use plan for a future horizon year of 2040.Table 1: General Plan Update: Comparison of 2018 and 2040
The DEIR is available for public review and comment for forty-five (45) days commencing February 14, 2020 and ending April 1, 2020 at 5:00 pm. Any person wishing to comment on the Draft EIR may provide written comments to the City during the public review period, care of Rebecca Deming, Community Development Director. The Draft EIR is available at the Desert Hot Springs City Hall, Community Development Department, 65950 Pierson Blvd, Desert Hot Springs, CA 92240, and at the Desert Hot Springs Library, 11691 West Dr, Desert Hot Springs, CA 92240. Governor Newsom Launches Process for Pardoning People Prosecuted for Being Gay
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that his office would be launching a new clemency initiative to pardon people who were prosecuted in California for being gay. The move was inspired by a legislative call to pardon Bayard Rustin, a humanitarian and civil rights leader who was convicted of a misdemeanor vagrancy offense for consensual adult sexual activity. In launching the new clemency initiative, Governor Newsom issued Rustin a posthumous pardon. In California and across the country, charges like vagrancy, loitering, and sodomy have been used to unjustly target lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. Law enforcement and prosecutors specifically targeted LGBT individuals, communities and community spaces for criminal prosecution. Now, as a proudly LGBTQ-allied state, California is turning the page on historic wrongs. This new clemency initiative will allow pardons for people like Rustin who were subjected to discriminatory arrest and prosecution for engaging in consensual conduct with people of the same sex. Californians can apply for clemency for people they believe meet the criteria for consideration. “In California and across the country, many laws have been used as legal tools of oppression, and to stigmatize and punish LGBTQ people and communities and warn others what harm could await
them for living authentically,” said Governor Newsom. “I thank those who advocated for Bayard Rustin’s pardon, and I want to encourage others in similar situations to seek a pardon to right this egregious wrong.” In 1975, California repealed the law which made consensual sex between samesex adults a crime. In 1997, the state established a process where individuals convicted for engaging in consensual adult sexual conduct could request removal from the California Sex Offender Registry. However, this does not modify the underlying conviction or constitute a pardon. The new clemency initiative will work to identify eligible pardon candidates, and diligently process applications with the express goal of pardoning eligible individuals. To learn how to apply for a pardon and to receive updates and information on the clemency initiative, sign up at www.gov.ca.gov/clemency. Bayard Rustin was a visionary champion for peace, equality, and economic justice, and was a key strategist and organizer behind the 1963 March on Washington. Additionally, he worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to organize the March and the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was fundamental in integrating nonviolent direct action into the civil rights movement. Rustin, a native of New York, traveled around the country and world to promote civil and human rights, and trained hundreds of people on nonviolence. While in California in 1942, he visited Japanese
Americans imprisoned in the Manzanar internment camp and reported on the camp’s humanitarian conditions. On August 8, 2013, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, describing him as “an unyielding activist for civil rights, dignity, and equality for all.” Rustin died in 1987. Rustin’s pardon request was made by the California Legislative Black and LGBTQ Caucuses, whose representatives praise Governor Newsom’s action. “I’m thrilled that Governor Newsom is pardoning Bayard Rustin and that he acted so quickly and decisively in response to our request. I also applaud the Governor for broadening this work to provide other criminalized LGBT people with a path to clear their records of wrongful convictions on homophobic charges. These actions are consistent with the Governor’s deep and longstanding support for the LGBT community,” said Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), Chair of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus. “Generations of LGBT people – including countless gay men – were branded criminals and sex offenders simply because they had consensual sex. This was often life-ruining, and many languished on the sex offender registry for decades. The Governor’s actions today are a huge step forward in our community’s ongoing quest for full acceptance and justice.” “On behalf of the Black Caucus, I want to thank the

Tribes Battle Trump’s Plan to Develop Utah Monuments
By Desert Star Staff MONTICELLO, Utah -Advocacy groups are upset - though not surprised - by the Trump administration’s plan to open up almost 1 million acres of public lands in Utah for development. The Bureau of Land Management last week announced a plan to lease lands that were part of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments to mineral development, mining and recreational interests, starting in 2021. The move angered both tribal groups and conservationists, who have been fighting the move since President Donald Trump signed an executive order in 2017 reducing the protected portions of the two monuments. Steve Bloch, an attorney with the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, said the plan confirms their worst fears about the government’s intentions. “We’re incredibly disappointed with the results,” Bloch said. “Plans prioritize energy development and extractive use, motorizedvehicle use throughout the majority of the lands that have been excluded from national monument status.” The plan is supported in Utah by the governor, both U.S. senators and a majority of the state Legislature. The BLM has said they’re confident they can both manage development on the public lands and protect the environment. Shortly after the 2017 directive, an alliance of conservation organizations along with five ative American tribes sued the federal government to reverse the president’s order. Bloch said the case still is in litigation, but by the time it is resolved, permanent damage could already be done. “The plans are going to result in the widespread destruction of many of the cultural and paleontological resources that make those monuments so important,” he said. Bloch said the Bears Ears monument contains tens of thousands of cultural artifacts and rare rock art, while the rock layers of Grand Staircase have yielded 75 millionyear-old dinosaur fossils. He said they will continue to work to block development interests from destroying the area’s treasures. “These plans are not going to be the final chapter for the management of these remarkable federal public lands,” Bloch said. We’re confident that the

litigation that we’ve brought will be successful, that the president’s attack on the monuments was illegal and that the monuments will be fully restored.” Bloch added the BLM proposal won’t become final until ctober 1, and he hopes his group’s lawsuit will prevail in time to keep the administration from carrying out the plan.
A Trump administration plan could open up parts of the fragile Grand Staircase-Escalante (above) and Bears Ears national monuments in Utah to drilling, mining and grazing in 2021. (dhayes/AdobeStock)
