Flash Flood Warning Heavy Rain Brings Flash Flooding; Debris Flows In Riverside County NBC PS News Staff The brunt of a powerful storm hit Riverside County Thursday, threatening flash flooding as well as mud and debris flows while mandatory evacuation orders remain in place for neighborhoods in Lake Elsinore and the Temescal Valley.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch that remains in place until Thursday evening throughout Riverside County, including the Coachella Valley. A wind advisory will remain in effect in the Riverside County mountains until 4 a.m. Saturday.
Rainfall rates Thursday are expected to reach 0.50 to 1 inch per hour in western Riverside County during the peak of the storm, which will last from about 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., and could be higher than that during isolated thunderstorms, NWS meteorologist
Miguel Miller said. The Palm Springs Police and Fire Departments are asking residents and visitors to “Shelter in Place” because of the hazards created by the heavy flooding. The Riverside County Emergency Management Department had initially
posted voluntary evacuation warnings for the residential areas impacted by the Holy Fire in August, but those warnings were elevated to mandatory evacuation orders Tuesday afternoon. All of the affected properties front the burn scar Continues on Page 3
Big Decision Day For Cathedral City By Luz Delia Caballero It’s a big day for Cathedral City. Today the council will decide how they will fill the position for late Mayor Greg Pettis. At this point, it all comes down to the process; whether the council will vote to appoint the next mayor or roll out with a special election. Lynne O’Neill says the decision should be obvious. “The council has a decision to make,” Chris Parman, the Cathedral City Communication and Event Manager told NBC Palm Springs. It’s a decision on how the council is going to fill the vacancy for late
Mayor Greg Pettis. “They have a choice tonight to either appoint somebody to that vacancy or call for a special election,” he added. The ladder would be a mail-in ballot election, that would happen in August. Plus, it would not be cheap. “We have a range of somewhere between $80,000 and $100,000,” added Parman. A decision that Lynne O’Neill, a Cathedral City District 1 resident, says would be too costly. “I would agree with the city attorney that it is too expensive Continues on Page 3
Indigenous Group Speaks Out for Missing and Murdered Women
By Desert Star Staff RENO, Nev. – Just before Valentine’s Day, supporters of indigenous women’s rights rallied in
Reno to bring attention to the problem of violence against indigenous women and girls. The statistics for American Indian and Alaska Native
women are frightening. More than half have been sexually assaulted and onethird have experienced rape, according to a report by the
National Institute of Justice. Autumn Harry, a member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, emceed the Wednesday event. She’s asking law enforcement at all levels to do a better job gathering and disseminating data, in order to get a clearer picture of the scope of the problem. “There’s not a national database to say how many missing and murdered indigenous women there are, so there’s not even an accurate count,” she points out. “And a lot of cases, they go unsolved.” A 2018 report by the Urban Indian Health Institute says in 2016, more than 5,700 American Indian or Alaska Native women and girls were reported missing or murdered, but only 116 of those cases were logged into the Justice Department’s missing persons database.
By Desert Star Staff Around 80 percent of Vatican priests are gay, according to a new book which details alleged secret relationships, male prostitutes and stunning hypocrisy from the most anti-gay members of upper echelons of the Catholic Church. French journalist Frederic Martel’s new book, ‘In the Closest of the Vatican,’ claims that the more homophobic the priest, the more likely they are to be gay. While not all the priests detailed in the 570-page book act on their sexual preferences, many are allegedly engaging in relationships with their fellow fathers, while some prefer casual hook ups and others are hiring male prostitutes, according to the review in Catholic publication the Tablet.
Martel’s scandalous claims come after he spent four years interviewing over 1,500 people, including 200 priests, 41 cardinals and 52 bishops, diplomatic officials, guards and others in the Vatican. Martel, who was a former adviser to the French government and is gay, repeatedly visited Rome where he sometimes stayed in the Vatican or Holy See properties in Rome. Martel’s publishers have described the book as a “startling account of corruption and hypocrisy at the heart of the Vatican.” One of the claims is that the late Colombian cardinal Alfonso López Trujillo used gay prostitutes, despite his staunch defense of the Church’s views on homosexuality. The book is to be released
February 21, on the same day as Pope Francis’ sexual abuse summit. While the book does not focus on the Catholic Church’s problems with child sex abuse, Martel thinks the
secretive sexual culture makes it difficult for secretly gay priests to denounce abusers. “The issue of homosexuality is a very serious issue that must be

Other federal statistics show murder is the third leading cause of death among those groups of women, and that the rates of violence on many reservations are much higher than the national average. Harry says she’d like to see more funding for tribal police forces, and increased public awareness of the issue, across the board. “I think a lot of it has to do with educating men as well, because this is a systemic issue of violence,” she states. Guide Dogs - Dog Days Afternoon 2019
Jeannie Cunningham, Bill Nicholson, Donna McMillan, Host Steve Maloney Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Guide Dogs of the Desert hosted its 11th annual Dog Day Afternoon on Feb. 6th at the beautiful historic Smoke Tree Ranch in Palm Springs. It was a lovely afternoon where guests were treated to a delicious buffet Lunch under a big white tent. Guests were greeted by several guide dogs in training and their handlers. Guide dogs and puppies were everywhere, and guests could see and pet them and ask
questions about the dogs. Yvonne and Steve Maloney hosted this fundraising luncheon again this year. Event co-chairs were Patrick Mundt and Tristan Milanovich. The guide dogs are in demand all over the country, and there is always a waiting list. It costs a lot to breed, raise and train a guide dog. So fundraisers are essential to continue the work. One way is for people to sponsor a guide dog and get updates on their training

and care. They get to name the puppy and attend the graduation luncheon and ceremony when the dog is given to its new handler. I found out that most of the guide dogs are bred to do that. The new group started training in September and will be ready to work with one of the lucky people who will get one in April. The ones who put in a request for a dog and are accepted must spend about four weeks with the dog to
make sure they work together. Most of the dogs at Guide Dogs are Labrador Retrievers and Standard Poodles. Guide dogs of the Desert were founded 46 years ago and is a non-profit organization. The organization believes that every legally blind person should have the use of a Guide Dog and that also includes individuals with many disabilities like balance issues, prosthesis, deafness, and PTS. Guide Dogs of the Desert
provides at NO COST a trained dog for their specific needs. At each table was a blindfold and guests were asked to put them on and remember where the salt was on the table. It was to give guests an idea of what it means to be blind and not able to even find the salt on the table, just a small example of blindness. There was a raffle and silent auction to raise funds for the dogs and training.

‘Momma’s House’ Heartbeat of Love Luncheon
Co-chair Stacy Mengedoth, Trey Gowdy and co-chair Jan Lupia. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 6th annual HEARTbeat of Love luncheon was held at the Renaissance Resort and Spa in Indian Wells. The luncheon benefits Momma’s House, the only residential home in the Coachella Valley that provides shelter for Women In Crisis pregnancies. They started just five years ago and already have made an impact in the lives of 100 women and their babies. A video of some of the women currently in Momma’s House showed the level of love and understanding of being in Momma’s House. They told their story about their lives before coming to the home and how it has changed their lives. They get to earn high school diplomas, have a chance at jobs, get rid
of addictions and find a new meaning to live and love with the help of GOD. These women show a great deal of courage but they just needed help to get a better life, and many said they probably would not be here if it were not for Momma’s House, back on the streets, into drugs and would not have their children who they love. Each year Momma’s House brings in a well-known speaker to address the crowd. This year was no exception as they brought Congressman Trey Gowdy to speak. The event was held in the Emerald Room as it was sold out at almost 1100 guests. There was the usual silent auction filled with great gifts and a big live auction with one-of-a-kind items that went for large sums of
money to help Momma’s House. Trey Gowdy spoke to the crowd bringing out a lot of laughter during the first part of his speech. He told about a dream he had that was hilarious. In between, he would get serious and talk about his two decades as a prosecuting attorney. He said he came from humble beginnings and was not good at sports etc., but proved that anyone could achieve a goal in this country. He prosecuted a range of crimes, Drugs, Human Trafficking, bank robbers, child pornography, rape, and murder. He said that prosecuting capital crimes that required the death penalty were especially life-altering. He said when he won a seat in Congress that he was so
Trey Gowdy. Photo by Pat Krause happy to get out of prosecuting criminals. He mentioned his wife is not political, and is a teacher and delightfully told about his sons. Then he would get serious and talk about life and how we live it. He held the audience’s attention where there was no sound, just his voice, delivering a fantastic speech. One people will not forget. He said we all must decide on Life and how we live it, what we can stand up for what we believe and what you can do to achieve that goal.
Momma’s House opened its doors in 2013, and they address the needs of women with unplanned pregnancies and no means of support or a place to live. Many are in delicate situations. They give the women who are homeless, drug addicted, have casual sex, live in domestic violence and shame and The tools to live a better life. They give them Hope, confidence, and courage to face the future with parenting skills to counseling, all with a lot of love.

There was a special Humanitarian Award to Steve Chase who passed away 25 years ago but founded DAP and other programs for the LBGTQ community when it was a time HIV/AIDS was a Death Sentence, and no one wanted February 15, 2019

A video showing his life and his philanthropic efforts helped people see his incredible experience of giving back to a place he loved not just to DAP but to many charities and More. He would have been thrilled with the award. The highlight of the night was when Barry Manilow came on stage with a full orchestra and sang to the crowd who gathered around the stage to sing with him and just able to see him give a live and in person performance. Guests were singing along, tapping their feet to the music and
some were swaying to the music. What a show. He sang a lot of his standard hits and encouraged the guests to sing along during a couple of songs. He was thrilled to see so many people at the gala. He brought his band and singers that will be part of his new concerts. As usual, there was an afterparty just in another area of the Convention Center. Entertainment was, and Guests were encouraged to dance the night away. What a great way to end a special night in the Desert and helping people realize what grand plans are in the works for DAP and its expansion to help everyone.

LA to Retire Three Gas-Fired Power Plants, Go Renewable
LOS ANGELES – California this week took a huge step toward the goal of running entirely on renewable energy, as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power announced that it’s retiring three natural gas power plants.
The L.A. DWP, which is the largest municipal utility in the nation, says it will close the Haynes, Harbor and Scattergood gas-fired plants near the L.A. International Airport. Tim O’Connor, senior director of the California
Energy Program at the Environmental Defense Fund, says his group applauds the agency’s plan to go 100 percent renewable. “The technology is available today to balance our electric load and to meet load growth with
clean sources, as opposed to continuing the trend of using fossil fuels to provide electricity,” he states. “It’s really a huge step forward.” All three gas plants are currently operating but will now close by 2029. The Environmental Defense Fund estimates that closing the plants will reduce California’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2 million metric tons a year, which is about the same as taking 425,000 vehicles off the road. Opponents say the closures will lead to job losses. The agency says its decision was influenced by a
2010 law that requires coastal power plants to reduce the practice of using ocean water to cool their facilities. O’Connor says it’s a victory for people concerned about climate change. “What we’re seeing is a signal that we’re going to be pursuing clean energy, clean resources, as opposed to spending billions of dollars on plants that we know are imperiling our planet because of climate change,” he states. The L.A. DWP is also working on a multi-year study on how to get to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.

Old Globe’s latest dramedy has a “Familiar” ring to it
Anthony Comis, Ramona Keller, Cherene Snow, Zakiya Young, Danny Johnson, Olivia Washington, Wandachristine and Lucas Hall in “Familiar” Photo by Jim Cox. By Lisa Lyons “Familiar,” a dramedy from Tony Award-nominated writer/ actress Danai Gurira (Black Panther, The Walking Dead), attempts to shine the light on the plight of the expats from the troubled land of Zimbabwe who fled to America during the 1980s seeking to start a new life of opportunity. Many of those who were part of the resistance movement turned their back on their former country, and the resentments of those who remained have been etched deeply into families torn asunder in more ways than one. Now living in suburban Minneapolis, the Chinyaramwira family, headed by father Donald (a fully-fleshed, heartfelt performance by Danny Johnson and steelyspined matriarch Marvelous (a rock solid, heartbreaking performance by Cherene Snow), welcome home youngest daughter Nyasha (an effervescent Olivia Washington) from a monthslong trip to Africa on the eve of older daughter Tendikayi’s wedding to Chris, a white, upper middle class financial do-gooder running a nonprofit who is doing all he can
do integrate smoothly into his newfound family. Marvelous’s younger sister Maggie (a sassy sympathetic Ramona Keller), is a wine-guzzling, entrepreneurial single mom of grown boys who (to the family’s dismay) don’t know anything about their African heritage not even knowing one word of their native Shona language. This is fine with Marvelous who longs to leave all memories of Zimbabwe in the past, unlike her husband who has a secret desire to return to his homeland. As in many strained family celebrations, an uninvited guest shows up to throw a wrench into the marriage proceedings. Family matriarch Auntie Anne (the larger than life, elegant Wandachristine) has been flown in by the bride and groom to make sure that traditional Shona elements are integrated into their church ceremony. Haughty, elegant, and haunted by the past, Anne opens up a Pandora’s Box of family history that throws all participants into a whirlwind of high emotions, guilt, and recriminations that threaten to derail the planned wedding for good. Still thinking this is a comedy? It’s kind of hard to

relationships therein will survive and thrive moving forward. There’s a lot of words in this play, so one can imagine that director Edward Torres, who most recently directed “Native Gardens” at the Globe, had his work cut out for him, but he keeps the momentum going and elicits incredible chemistry from his cast. Major kudos go to the scenic design of Walt Spangler and lighting scheme of Jason Lyons. That is a real, substantial house on that stage, one you would immediately want to move into and when characters slam doors (as they are wont to do), it’s a satisfying solid slam, no shaking scrim walls. Also a tip of the hat to Costume Designer Alejo Vietti. Who has a sharp contrast between Marvelous
proud, brilliant native costume of acid yellow, red and greens that draw the eye to the grand dame of the clan?Playwright Gurira has produced highly praised dramatic works on both coasts and has an undeniable talent for mining the hearts of characters she creates. This one needs a slightly sharper focus that can be softened by the finely drawn performances of the actors involved. If you’re wondering where the title “Familiar” comes in, it’s a song that Nyasha writes for her sister’s wedding that captures the wistfulness of love, longing, and loss. Perhaps under all the drama lies basic truths that are familiar to all of us. “Familiar” runs at the Old Globe’s Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage until March 3. For

Nyasha’s pajama top and presses his semi-naked body to hers after she succumbs to severe hypothermia having walked out into the frozen Minnesota winter landscape to gather her fevered thoughts. These broad, farcical elements seem at odds with the serious undertones of the play. One feels that too many bases were trying to be covered and too many storylines are rushed to tie up in Act Two. There is so much going on that moment that should resonate occasionally get lost, which is a shame because the performers are doing great work. Tall, elegant Zakiya Young showed us the vulnerable, insecure side of Tendikayi’s cut and dried, a repressed lawyer whose life is scheduled down to the nth degree. Lucas Hall manages to overcome Chris’ inherent geekiness and make him something more than a caricature of a white boy in a black-white relationship. Anthony Comis brings a sweet underdog quality to the feckless Veteran Brad who has always lived in Chris’ shadow. The specter of a family ghost who has been mostly unknown by the younger Chinyaramwiras suddenly throws the identity of several family members into doubt although there is no doubt that the family and the loving February 15, 2019
