By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA– Modernism Week announced today that it has added many exciting new events to its schedule. The 11-day event in the Palm Springs area of Southern California will take place February 15-25, 2018, and will highlight midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design, and vintage culture. The newly

added events include a panel and home tour produced by Atomic Ranch magazine, a tour of the rarely-seen Raymond Loewy House, a fashion show, tours of the first-ever Modernism Week Showcase Home, a Palm Desert home tour, film screenings, talks, tours and many other events. All events are open to the public and tickets are now on sale at modernismweek.

KMIR Vince Marino Cathedral City, CA - A marijuana growing facility in Cathedral City is starting to take shape and when the project is completed it is set to be the second largest marijuana growing facility in the state. The company behind the huge greenhouse is called Sunniva, a North American provider of medical cannabis and services. Chief Operating Officer Duncan Gordon says it isn’t your average grow operation. “What we have here is three hundred and seventy five thousand square feet dutch style venlogreenhouse, which is arguably that Cadillac of greenhouses around

the world,” Gordon said. The high tech growing facility will use a special diffused glass ceiling to maximize natural sunlight which will allow growers to use 90 percent less electricity than an average indoor grow. Talk about thinking green. “Makes perfect sense in the desert because in the high desert you’re talking about three hundred and fifty days of sunlight a year ... so it’s crazy not to draw on the capacity and the power of the sun,” said Gordon. People who live in the area though have some concerns. “I’m a little concerned if there might be a smell

com. A portion of ticket proceeds benefits local preservation, neighborhood and community groups. One of the highlights is the opportunity to tour the first-ever Modernism Week Showcase Home - Moroccan Modern. This one-of-a-kind custom-built home from 1975 was designed by architect Hal Lacy and recently renovated to modern luxury by Thomboy

Properties. When guests enter this stunning private property through majestic customcarved 10 high double entry doors, they are immediately transformed into a private and completely secluded world. While the house is thoroughly modernized, the architect created tremendous drama by adding magnificent touches that harken back to Morocco, including details in the entry

and master doors, decorative medallion cutouts and metal screens visible from the street, and the geometry of the angled walls. This house represents a wonderful blend of design elements known as Moroccan Modern. Modernism Week Showcase Home tours will be held on February 16,17,18, 23 and 24 at various times per day. Swarovski To Illuminate 90th Oscars Stage

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, -Swarovski has partnered with Tony and Emmy Award®winning production designer Derek McLane to create a spectacular set design for the 90th Oscars® on Sunday, March 4, 2018. This year’s show will mark Swarovski’s 11th year illuminating the Oscars stage, and the 6th year that McLane will incorporate Swarovski crystals throughout the show’s set design. McLane has earned Primetime Emmy

Award® nominations for every year he’s worked on the Oscars telecasts and won in 2014. Key features of this year’s Oscars set design include: a brand-new proscenium; the return of the beloved floating Oscars; and a signature backdrop curtain and opera box covers. “The Oscars is one of the most glamorous and storied nights of the year, celebrated the world over,” said Nadja Swarovski, Member of the Swarovski Executive Board.

“We are proud to collaborate with Oscars production designer Derek McLane to help execute his vision for this momentous 90th anniversary. For generations, Swarovski has demonstrated a dedication to the arts, film, costume designers, architecture and fashion. We strive for symbiotic partnerships and our 11 years illuminating the Oscars stage has been extraordinarily meaningful.” McLane visited Swarovski’s historic headquarters in

Wattens, Austria, earlier this year to experience the heritage of Swarovski firsthand. He harnessed inspiration for this year’s set design from the impressive creativity, innovation and craftsmanship showcased in Kristallwelten’s enchanting grounds, educational exhibits and knowledgeable guides. Following his trip, McLane designed a new proscenium for the 90th Oscars featuring more than 45 million crystals. The piece will be constructed from octagonal tiles with a mix of crystal, metal, mirror and other materials to achieve its complex and beautiful shape. Returning for a second year will be the spectacular floating Oscars, featuring over 140,000 crystals. The installation will also include an original backdrop curtain, shimmering with over 80,000 crystals. Finally, the theater’s opera boxes will once again be embellished with over 23,000 breathtaking Swarovski stones. Swarovski’s history on the silver screen goes back to the early days of Hollywood over 85 years ago, when its crystals made their debut in the

By Desert Star Staff The Songwriters Guild of America, the largest and longest-established music creator organization in the United States, today announced it has negotiated changes to the pending Music Modernization Act (HR 4706) that will enable it to support passage of the legislation. Among the agreed-upon amendments to the bill are: • the doubling of songwriter and composer representation on the board of directors of the Mechanical Licensing Collective established by the Act; • the re-alignment of an Unclaimed Royalties Oversight Committee that will now have a 50/50 music creator and music publisher balance; and • clarifications to the payments sections that will make it easier for music creators to get the full benefits of their negotiated publishing agreements as applied to the distribution of what the bill refers to as “unclaimed” funds by music publishers. As part of the discussions leading to changes in the Music Modernization Act, the US music publisher community has also pledged to lend its full support on Capitol Hill to SGA’s efforts to secure quick passage of the pending Copyright Alternative in SmallClaims Enforcement (CASE) Act of 2017 (HR 3945). CASE will provide music creators with a much-needed alternative to expensive copyright infringement actions against unlicensed users of their music.

Speaking on behalf of SGA, multi-platinum songwriter and organization president, Rick Carnes, noted that, “The benefits of the pending Modernization law, with the changes SGA has successfully sought, have made the current bill deserving of our support. We continue to applaud the efforts of members of the music creator and publishing communities seeking further improvements that would make the proposed legislation even more advantageous to American songwriters, composers and independent publishers. Still, the bill as it now stands would -- on balance -- benefit those creators we are sworn to protect significantly more than no bill at all. Our twoword mission statement is to ‘protect songwriters.’ After more than six months of hard work alongside our colleagues at Music Creators North America (MCNA), SGA feels, individually, that it succeeded insofar as possible in carrying out our mission.” Under the agreed-upon changes, the Mechanical Licensing Collective board will now have four professional songwriter/composer voting members and ten voting music publishers. The Unclaimed Royalty Oversight Committee, whose role will be to oversee ownership and distribution of so-called “unclaimed” royalties, will now have evenly balanced, “five and five” representation among ten voting members. As to clarifications regarding

payment of music creator royalties received from the Collective by music publishers, the bill is now clearer in spelling out that such royalties are to be distributed on a title-by-title basis to songwriters under the percentages set forth in their publishing agreements. In other words, a songwriter or composer operating under an agreement that gives a creator the benefit of a 90%/10% split with its music

publisher will have that same split applied in the distribution of “unclaimed” royalties that have been matched under the usage formula set forth in the legislation. Other benefits of the legislation include establishment of a system that: Other benefits of the legislation include establishment of a system that: • is likely to substantially improve royalty payment

The 90th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be broadcast live on the ABC Television Network at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The Oscars, produced by Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, also will be televised in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide. Is Sugar the Cause of Your Weight Gain? Tips to Cut Back By Desert Star Staff February is American Heart Month and a great opportunity to focus on your cardiovascular health. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease accounts for about one of every three deaths. Taking care of your heart starts with your diet and making healthy changes. Cutting down on sugar, which experts say most Americans consume far too much of on a daily basis, is the perfect place to start. Processed sugars add empty calories to your diet and can disrupt your metabolism, making weight loss or maintenance difficult and posing serious health risks. Americans on average get

about 16 percent of their daily calories from added sugars, according to an Food and Drug Administration report, but the USDA’s dietary guidelines recommend less than onethird of that amount. And it’s not just the usual suspects like candy, cookies and cake that can cause the sugar surplus. “Foods like white bread and bagels break down the same as added sugar, so, it’s about the types of carbs you’re eating, too. In fact, I would say fats aren’t making us fat, sugar is.” says Dr. Arthur Agatston, founder of the South Beach Diet. To avoid extra sugar in your diet and get on a path to greater health, consider these simple strategies. • Shop the Perimeter. Sticking to the perimeter of the grocery store is a good rule of thumb, as this tends to be where you’ll find the least processed foods, such as vegetables, fruit, dairy, meat and seafood, most of which are free of added sugar. • Read Food Labels. Seek out foods containing little to no sugar, being careful to read labels. You may have to look hard though, as sugar is ubiquitous in American foods. Bear in mind that ingredient

listings on packaged foods are in order of volume. • Learn Sugar’s Other Names. “Pretty much anything ending in ‘ose’ is a sugar. And whether it’s fructose, dextrose or sucrose, it will end up as a sugar in your body,” says Mandi Knowles, Registered Dietitian at South Beach Diet. Avoid them if you want to eat less sugar. • Buy Unsweetened Foods. Look for food labels that say the food is unsweetened. Not “naturally sweetened.” Unsweetened. That means there won’t be anything lurking in there that could throw you off.

• Make Sugar Swaps. Simple swaps can help you save on sugar. Swap soda for unsweetened iced tea and save 31 grams of sugar. Swap non-fat flavored yogurt for Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries and save 19 grams of sugar. Swap your favorite vanilla latte for black coffee with a splash of cream and save 35 grams of sugar. • Try Something New. Consider a diet plan that focuses on good carbs, good fats, healthy protein and high fiber, such as the South Beach Diet, which is proven to have

a positive impact on heart health, weight loss and belly fat. Delivering on average just 1 percent of calories from added sugars, it was the first plan to propose dieters focus less on cutting out fats and carbs and focus more on considering the quality of the fats and carbs they’re eating. A healthy diet and lifestyle are among your best defenses to help fight cardiovascular disease. This American Heart Month, you can help improve your heart health and overall health by reducing sugar in your diet. StatePoint

The facility will utilize carbon filters and a misting deodorizer system to control the smell of marijuana. But that’s not all. “Whenever we open a shipping door or loading dock or someone walks through the facility, or opens and external door, it will have negative pressure which means the air will move into the facility and not out,” said Gordon. himself to female staff. Weinstein, who has strenuously denied engaging in non-consensual activity, is also alleged to have used the resources of the successful film studio to build a network of employees that could “facilitate his sexual encounters with women.” “In part, HW [Harvey Weinstein] required executive assistants to schedule and

help arrange sexual (or possible sexual) encounters for HW, even directing them to essentially badger women who refused or expressed reluctance into accepting a ‘meeting’ with HW,” the lawsuit states. Through subpoenas, the attorney general has begun reviewing documents, including financial records and business correspondence from The Weinstein Company. The investigation also includes testimony from past and present employees. In one allegation dating back to 2015, Weinstein is alleged to have arranged for a female employee to set up his phone devices in his hotel room. However, the woman was then allegedly “badgered” into giving a naked Weinstein a massage. “The incident was reported to Human Resources and to TWC executives and Board members in November 2015, but TWC took no action to formally investigate the complaint, to protect employees

from HW, or to prevent future recurrence of such conduct,” the lawsuit claims. Drivers for the movie producer in New York and Los Angeles were also allegedly required to “keep condoms and erectile dysfunction injections in the car, in order to provide them to HW as needed.” “As alleged in our complaint, The Weinstein Company repeatedly broke New York law by failing to protect its employees from pervasive sexual harassment, intimidation, and discrimination,” said Attorney General Schneiderman. “Any sale of The Weinstein Company must ensure that victims will be compensated, employees will be protected going forward, and that neither perpetrators nor enablers will be unjustly enriched. Every New Yorker has a right to a workplace free of sexual harassment, intimidation, and fear.”

CDPH Urges Caution When Collecting and Eating Wild Mushrooms By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO - As seasonal rains promote the growth of wild mushrooms, California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith is again reminding people that eating wild mushrooms can cause serious illness and even death. “Telling the difference between wild mushrooms that are safe and those that are poisonous can be difficult for many people,” said Dr. Smith. “Wild mushrooms should not be eaten unless they have been examined by a mushroom expert and determined to be edible.” The most serious illnesses and deaths have been linked primarily to wild mushrooms known to cause liver damage, including Amanita phalloides (shown at left), also known as the “death cap” and Amanita

Talking to a Wall: Offshore Drilling Plan Draws Protests By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – It isn’t clear whether Florida is still included in the Trump administration’s plan to expand offshore drilling, but the first and only hearing about it was in Tallahassee on Thursday. Groups opposed to the plan had to get creative in an attempt to share their views. With no opportunity for oral public testimony, the organizations staged what they called a “People’s Hearing.” They rented space in the same hotel as the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management meeting. Holly Parker, Florida regional manager for the Surfrider Foundation, explained they hired a court reporter to record comments, and allowed people to speak to a brick wall – to symbolize the Trump administration. “This is a huge issue of concern for Floridians,”

said Parker. “There’s been discussion about whether or not Florida is or is not included in the plan. It’s been very confusing. And we think members of the public, citizens of Florida, deserve the opportunity to express their concerns and make sure that that’s included in the record.” On Thursday, Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Noah Valenstein also sent a letter to the administration opposing any exploratory drilling off the Florida coast. Parker said the decision to have just one meeting in Tallahassee, far from coastal communities, locks many concerned citizens out of the process. “It’s really difficult for working folks to travel to Tallahassee midweek to participate in this. And the result is that it’s exclusionary;

Uncertainty surrounds the Trump administration’s five-year plan to allow offshore oil and gas leases in Florida and other coastal states. (Steven Straiton/Flickr) it keeps people out of the process,” she said. “So, we would love if there are additional public meetings throughout the state, particularly focused on the coastal communities that

have the potential to be most impacted by this proposal.” Despite the uncertainty, Gov. Rick Scott has said he believes the Trump administration will keep its

word and exclude Florida from its plan for offshore drilling. The public can weigh in on the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management website at boem.gov.

The president alleged that the Democrats knew the memo would have to be heavily redacted and said they would use that as evidence of a “lack of transparency” in the White House. The decision to block the memo, which was authored by Representative Adam Schiff, raised the ire of Democrats who accused Trump of double standards. Democrats on the committee said the Republican memo, written by California congressman Devin Nunes, cherry-picked information in order to accuse the FBI and the Justice Department of

Feds’ Broken Payment System for Insurers Impacts Consumers By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Consumers who lose their health insurance coverage in the middle of the year may have a hard time finding information on coverage – and a new report from the Urban Institute says there’s a good reason for that. One of the study authors Stan Dorn, now a senior fellow with Families USA, says it has to do with the current system

used to reimburse insurers. “When people sign up for coverage midyear, the formulas the federal government is using to compensate health plans don’t provide enough money, and that’s one reason we’re not seeing insurance plans market to consumers in the middle of the year,” he explains. Under the current system, the government offers extra subsidies for insurers that

accept high-risk consumers to their plan, and less for healthier – or low risk – people. Those payments drop significantly for people who enroll midyear. The study points out that there has been some improvement in the system, with federal fixes making up for about half of policies that were previously underpaid. Dorn adds that the

Affordable Care Act is not part of the problem and says under the law consumers at least can access midyear care when they may not have before the ACA. He says it’s just about improving access to care. “Insurance companies believe, and for good reason, that they will lose money if they enroll a lot of people in the middle of the year,” he explains. “It’s not like we’re worried

‘Witch hunts should be left in the Middle Ages’

By Desert Star Staff Celebrities criticizing the #MeToo movement have been joined by another big personality from the movie industry. Oscarwinning Austrian film director Michael Haneke called it a “witch hunt” that “poisons” the social climate. “I regard this hysteria of rash judgments that is spreading at the moment as absolutely disgusting,”director and screenwriter Haneke said in an interview with the Austrian daily Kurier. “People are just being finished off in the media, [their] lives and careers are being ruined,” he said. “Any kind of rape or [sexual] coercion should be punished,” he

stressed, but what bothers him about the ongoing debate around allegations of sexual abuse targeting celebrities is its “totally unperceived malignance, the blind rage that is not based on facts.” Such a prejudiced approach “destroys the lives of people, whose crime has not been proven in many cases,”Haneke said. “This new man-hating puritanism that comes in the wake of the #MeToo movement worries me,”he said, adding that men “should hardly even touch this topic” nowadays. He also questioned the authenticity of some allegations. The catch here, according to Haneke, is that many of the accusations are related to

the incidents that happened “20 or 30 years ago.” Some cases may simply be scoresettling that has nothing to do with sexual misconduct. The film director also warned that an unconfined wave of such accusations could actually have negative effects on artistic freedom and the movie and media industries. The actors who fall under suspicion in the light of such allegations are often “cut out of movies and TV series” as the media corporations start scratching their heads over the potential loss of audiences. “This has nothing to do with the fact that every sexual and every violent assault – both against women and men – should be condemned

and punished,” Haneke said. But “a witch hunt should be left in the Middle Ages.” The movement that initially claimed to be aimed at breaking the silence around sexual misconduct has now transformed into something that actually impedes debate on the issue, the film director warned. “Every Shitstorm that breaks out on the internet and in the comment section of serious media outlets after such ‘revelations’ poisons the social climate,” Haneke said, adding that the “malignancy” of self-styled internet critics makes any debate on the topic “all the more difficult.” Those accused of some sexual abuse are often not

that insurance companies aren’t making enough money. We need to design a system that incentivizes insurance companies to do good things for American consumers.” According to the Urban Institute, more than 30 million people become uninsured at some point during the year. Causes range from job loss to life changes.

even given a chance to refute these allegations. Michael Haneke is best known for such films as Funny Games (1997), Caché (2005), The White Ribbon (2009) and Amour (2012). He has won two Palms d’Or and the Golden Globe Award. His film Amour also won an Academy Award in the category of Best Foreign Language Film and received four other nominations. Haneke himself has never been accused of any sexual misconduct. The renowned Austrian film director is just the latest celebrity to join the backlash against the #MeToo movement. Earlier, a French actress, Catherine Deneuve, led a group of 100 French artists and intellectuals in signing a letter castigating the “puritan” US-led media campaign.

“Water by the Spoonful” - A Disappointing Production WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

L-R: Josh Braaten (Fountainhead) offers to pay for funeral flowers but is turned down by Elliot, (Sean Carvajal) as Cousin Yazmin (Keren Lugo) and Elliot’s birth mother Odessa (Luna Lauren Vélez) look on. A funny thing happened on the way to the Mark Taper Forum to “Water by the Spoonful,” Quiara Alegria Hudes’ Pulitzer-prize winning play. Directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz, it began with lively opening dialogue between Elliot, (Sean Carvajal) a young Marine who served in Iraq and his cousin Yazmin (Keren Lugo). They lovingly make fun of their ailing Aunt Ginny’s strange way of cooking, describing how she combines healthy food with bad choices, such as bacon. However, ten minutes into the play, the house lights came up followed by an announcement that the play would continue in five minutes, which turned out to be more like ten minutes. Having never experienced this before, I was quite curious as to what transpired backstage to cause such an unprecedented interruption. Without an explanation, the play resumed and I settled in with high expectations as I had just given rave reviews to the brilliant “Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue,” the playwright’s first of the trilogy, with the third play, “The Happiest Song Plays Last” currently at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. Although unexpected, the interruption is not the problem. To the story: Yazmin has a colleague at Swarthmore College who is making a film and wants to interview Elliot about his war experiences, but Professor Aman (Nick Massouh) soon finds out that he is an unwilling subject. He asks him what language he speaks to which Elliot replies, “Spanglish.” (That was the first stagecraft problem as Carvajal’s deep guttural Philadelphia accent made it quite difficult to understand his lines practically throughout the play.) Yazmin is the one in the family who transcended her poor Philadelphia Puerto

Rican roots to become an adjunct professor of music specializing in the dissonant jazz sound of John Coltrane. As in “Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue,” the playwright’s knowledge gained from a Yale music degree is woven into the dialogue as Yazmin lectures her unseen class about jazz and Coltrane in particular. “This jazz great democratized the notes and gave ugliness a dignified freedom,” Adding, “This is jazz that some people listen to voluntarily.” Odessa Ortiz, Elliot’s birth mother played by Luna Lauren Vélez, organized an online chat room for crack addicts seeking recovery. Her own addiction resulted in the death of one child and her sister Ginny raising Elliot. The participants use screen names to protect their identity. Her screen name is Haikumom and she begins the session with a non-alcoholic toast to the new day, “The roosters are crowing and it’s a beautiful day to be sober.” Orangutan, (a strident Sylvia Kwan) at 31 years of age is the youngest. She was adopted as a baby by an American family from Maine and now lives and works in Japan. She plans to search for her birth mother. Chutes&Ladders (Bernard K. Addison) is an amusing, supportive AfricanAmerican IRS agent from San Diego who tries to act as the arbiter of truth. The last member to join the group is Fountainhead, (Josh Braaten) a recently unemployed techie from Philadelphia struggling with both the acceptance and control of his addiction. Elliot had to overcome his own addiction to pain meds on which he got hooked when he was being treated for a severe leg wound. He is also suffering from PTSD and is “stalked” by the ghost

of an Iraqi that he killed. The specter appears throughout the play adding to Elliot’s struggle with adjusting to life as a civilian where he’s working at a fast-food restaurant. It is there that he receives a phone call from Yazmin that his beloved Aunt Ginny has been taken off life support. He was very devoted to her and is overwrought at the news. He and Yazmin will be responsible for making the funeral arrangements. The backbone of the family, she wished to be cremated and her ashes scattered in Puerto Rico. Neither one has money for the funeral so they visit Odessa to see if she can help which triggers some of Elliot’s pent up anger towards her. She doesn’t have much but offers them her computer to sell. Back online, Orangutan is checking in with the group from Japan: “I flew half way around the world but it was still me when I got off the plane.” She has 96 days of sobriety but is lonely and wants Chutes&Ladders to join her. He tries to discourage her and covers his insecurities by saying, “I’m 50 years old on a good day” adding “I’ll admit I’m a dashing concept.” Teasing him about being rigid, she says, “I bet you were the kid who colored inside the lines.” “No” he replied. “I was the kid who ate the crayons.” Fountainhead is now online. He is unsuccessful at controlling his addiction and confesses that he had a slip and smoked crack in his car. In Act II, Elliot and Yazmin are trying to select flowers for the funeral and when carnations are suggested he says, “You know what a carnation says to the world?” “That they were out of roses at the 7-Eleven.” Moving the drama along, an unexpected action is taken by Odessa, something February 16, 2018

L- R: Sean Carvajal as Elliot, an Iraqi war vet, (background) and Nick Massouh as Professor Aman, who wants to make a film about war. transpires between Orangutan and Chutes&Ladders, and the centerpiece of the family gets her last wish fulfilled. Regarding production values, they were adequate and consisted of a creative set design by Adam Rigg, costume design by Raquel Barreto, lighting design by Yi Zhao, sound design by Jane Shaw, and projection design by Hannah Wasileski, who came up with fascinating visuals. So, what went wrong with this production? This is a highly acclaimed play that received rave reviews and it’s clear that in theatre vernacular, “the words are on the page.” However, the director, Lileana Blain-Cruz was not able to serve the script or the actors well, as one could not help thinking throughout the play that the acting at times amounted to line readings and had a rather high-schoolish feel, rather than a professional ensemble. That said, two excellent performances were given by Luna Lauren Vélez and Keren

Lugo, both of whom dug deeply into their characters, delivering fully realized characterizations. Some of the other actors would probably be fine for film or television but lacked good vocal training or the stagecraft necessary for theatre. As for Hudes’ writing, it is spot on in illuminating in both a heartfelt and sometimes amusing fashion, the debilitating consequences of addiction on the individual and on families as well as the emotional residue suffered by veterans who experienced the horrors of combat.
