President Obama holds summit in Sunnylands, plays golf at PGA West. This is his seventh trip to the valley. Story and Photos by Pat Krause President Obama arrived at the Palm Springs Airport on Feb. 12th at about 11:45 am. This is another dual visit to the Desert where he loves to play golf. His visits have confirmed that Palm Springs is the Camp David of the West. The dignitaries arriving

from all over the world bring a spotlight to the Desert as well. These summit talks are always held at Sunnylands where presidents, world leaders and kings have stayed for years. They have played the very private 9-hole golf course that can be played as an 18hole course. The other course

By Desert Star Staff The death of conservative US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia means the eight surviving members of the court could decide several major cases – on abortion rights, labor unions, and immigration – without establishing legal precedent. In case of a deadlocked Supreme Court, the decisions made by the lower courts would remain in effect, but would remain open to future challenges. The alternative for the even-numbered court, where the conservative bloc no longer has a clear edge,

would be to re-hear a currentterm case once a ninth justice is appointed. Given the political maneuvering in Washington, that may not happen until 2017. Scalia’s death means the Supreme Court now has three consistent conservative justices: Chief Justice John Roberts, Samuel Alito, and Clarence Thomas – and four consistent liberal justices: Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert held its 2016 gala, Singing The Praises, honoring Helene Galen and Donna MacMillan on Valentines Day February 14th. The Black Tie event was held at Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort. A quartet played opera tunes during the cocktail hour. This fundraising event will benefit outreach programs that serve 12,000 Coachella Valley students from 1st grade all the way thru high school to ensure Opera stays an enduring art form for all future generations. Usually the first thing taken away in schools is The Arts that are so important for our youth. The evening program started with a performance by young Jesse Mills who wanted to sing Impossible Dreams from the opera Man of La Manchafor the honorees that have helped in his dream. President Bruce Johanson and Co-chairs Jean C. Carrus and Peggy Cravens took to the stage to present the honors to very deserving women, Helene Galen and Donna MacMillan. Both women have been very supportive of the Opera Guild and making sure The Arts are preserved for our children. Thru their philanthropic efforts in The Arts is shown in their support of the

Passion, Principle, Purpose- Goal Setting Principals

By Janice Gough You get in life what you tolerate,” former Navy SEAL Mark Divine said to us at a retreat I attended last year, which focused on creating an unbeatable mindset. This statement resonated with me. When I am honest with myself, I know there are things in my life I tolerate instead of saying “NO” and making a change, whether it is, health habits, relationships, or simply being lazy about something. Fighting those small battles requires us to put forth extra energy, and that is just hard sometimes. Working

harder to say “No” eliminates wasted time so that we have that time to find success. As you reflect on the year ahead, I hope you have a great deal of hope and enthusiasm for achieving your goals, both professionally and personally. As you plan, consider the following framework, the BIG 3 Ps: passion, principle, purpose. I use it to help me find my starting point. Prioritizing Goals builds a successful bridge to success. Think of it as the foundation for a large building you are planning to construct. Without the proper foundation, your structure will not be able to stand the test of time. Finding this starting point can be challenging at times, but it is absolutely necessary in order to not just achieve your goals but blow past them. That is why we must start with the BIG 3 Ps as a filter for our goals.

THE BIG 3 PS: PASSION, PRINCIPAL & PURPOSE Passion: Someone asked me recently, “How do you come up with new and fresh ideas for your business?” I told him I focus on what gets me fired up about the industry, the things that I feel I must share with potential prospects, and I encouraged him to be just as focused on discovering the one thing that he feels most passionate about. Amazingly, he called me back hours later with an entirely new business plan that was so laser focused that I believe it will completely reshape his year in 2016. Focus your Passion. Principle: The world needs more businessmen and women to be making decisions with a principlecentered focus. I am not trying to preach or make a political stance. I simply do not know how someone can set a goal, achieve it, and then maintain that success unless it is grounded on universal

principles, which is an alignment of our goals using absolute TRUTH. We do not devote enough effort and time to concerning ourselves with what the right thing to do is. Purpose: The most powerful force is when an individual has a meaningful purpose in life. You have only two choices: Get on board or get out of the way. I like to think of it as handing a warrior a sword for battle. The sword is an object that lets people know the warrior is serious about his commitment and is not afraid to unsheathe it in order to further his purpose. Live a purpose driven life. Make a commitment to yourself first, and then to others to help them achieve their goals, and watch your own life be blessed in ways you could not have foreseen. Finally, here is the outline that I use for planning my annual goals. Take the time to answer these questions as your prepare for a successful 2016.

Annual Focus Plan For 2016: 1) The ONE most important thing for me to focus on. 2) Top 3 goals related to my ONE thing. 3) New habits to develop and integrate. 4) Partner to hold me accountable to my ONE thing. As always, I look forward to continuing to share different strategies that will help you grow Janice Gough is a Financial Consultant in Palm Springs. HOA Homefront - Mandatory Education? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL

Dear Kelly: Why there are no educational requirements for board members and no requirements for either education, certification, background checks, etc. for managers? Particularly in light of the fact that some directors have very little education and are signing million dollar contracts, and when something goes wrong the manager is indemnified. L.L., Duarte Dear L.L.: Yes, amazingly, no education or license is required to manage California associations, and no education is required to serve on California HOA boards. Florida began in 2013 requiring HOA directors to certify they had read the governing documents and promise to uphold them, or to take an HOA certification course. Nevada’s CAI Chapter created a “Dedicated Community Association Leader” (“DCAL”) distinction, in which the volunteer receives about 30 hours of training. That is presently voluntary, but hundreds of Nevada volunteers have already attained their DCAL certification. In 2008, the Community Associations Institute in California sponsored AB 2806, a bill which would have required volunteer directors to obtain at least three hours of education. During

the legislative process, the bill was diluted from a mandatory to a voluntary education law, and then was vetoed by the Governor (who said voluntary laws are not helpful). Perhaps someday California will inaugurate meaningful requirements, at least regarding association boards handling larger amounts of money. Until then, homeowners should be careful when voting for board candidates to check experience and commitment for example, did the candidate receive any education from CAI, which offers a variety of basic education courses? [Visit www. responsiblecommunities.com or contact your local Chapter] As to HOA managers, many states already have mandatory licensing, but California appears to be a long way off from such a requirement. California’s Real Estate Commissioner, Wayne Bell, told me last year that manager licensing in California is unlikely to be soon, given the large amount of staff and budget resources which would be required. Until that day, boards should insist on hiring credentialed managers with good reputation and references. Thanks, Kelly Dear Mr. Richardson: Our board decided a while ago to pay one of the homeowners to act as an onsite manager. Nothing went out to the individual owners or was posted within the complex. Immigrants’ Rights Groups Grapple with Uncertainty By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO Advocates for immigrants’ rights are working through the implications of the unexpected vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court trying to determine how it affects a case that could decide the legal status of millions of undocumented immigrants. The passing of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia leaves a court that could split four-to-four on the constitutionality of President Obama’s 2012 executive order. The order grants temporary work permits to

undocumented parents of American citizens and legal residents, and to some people brought here as children. Sulma Arias is field director for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement. “It has all kinds of implications for us,” says Arias. “Either it goes back to that same circuit court; however, it’s a decision that will eventually come back to the Supreme Court.” If the court splits down the middle, the lower court decision that put the programs known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

(DACA) and Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA) on hold would stand. Arias thinks the case then would be appealed once again. And by that time, the high court would have a new justice confirmed during the next administration. She says the legal battle underscores the importance of the presidential race. “The community is very much in a fighting spirit about what this election means to us, come Nov. 8,” she says. The current case is set to be argued in April and a decision is expected in June.

The unexpected vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court could hurt the chances of success for a case affecting millions of undocumented immigrants. (kconnors/morguefile)

The US Health Care System – A Tough Pill To Swallow By Diana Hoppe, M.D. I entered medical school dreaming of being a doctor – helping my patients maintain their health and prevent chronic diseases. At that time, being a doctor meant respect, financial stability and a balanced life. Well, times have changed and it’s a tough pill to swallow for many of us, both physicians and patients. Here are a few of the staggering, and depressing, statistics: 1. Physician burnout is at its highest. From 2011 to 2014, the rate of physician burnout increased to 54.45 percent from 45.5 percent, with the most common burnout symptom being emotional exhaustion. 2. The rate of suicidal ideation among physicians jumped from 4.0 percent to 7.2 percent, an increase of 80 percent. 3. Physician work-life balance is completely awry –

with 44.5 percent of physicians lacking adequate time for their personal and/or family life. 4. The United States faces a shortage of as many as 90,000 physicians by 2025, including a critical need for specialists to treat an aging population that will increasingly live with chronic disease. 5. The health care costs in the United States are higher than any other country. 6. Eighty-six percent of all health care spending in 2010 was for people with one or more chronic medical conditions. 7. Approximately 70 percent of chronic conditions could be treated with lifestyle changes. Pretty depressing right? Well, one option would be to put your head in the sand and ignore the entire medical plight. Another option would be to take charge of practice as a physician/ practitioner and empower

your patients to start taking responsibility for their health. Did you know that the most common chronic and costly medical conditions in the United States today are preventable? Heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity and arthritis are all conditions that could be treated with simple changes in patients’ behavior. Four of the most common health risk behaviors that cause chronic disease are: 1) Lack of exercise or physical activity: In 2011, more than half (52 percent) of adults aged 18 years or older did not meet the recommendations for aerobic exercise or physical activity. In fact, 76 percent did not meet recommendations for musclestrengthening physical activity. 2) Poor nutrition: Ninety percent of Americans consume too much sodium, increasing the risk for heart disease. More

than one-third ( 36 percent ) of adolescents and 38 percent of adults said they ate fruit less than once a day, while 38 percent of adolescents and 23 percent of adults said that they ate vegetables less than once a day. 3) Smoking: More than 42 million adults – approximately one of every five – said they currently smoked cigarettes, with cigarette-smokingaccountable deaths reaching 480,000 each year. 4) Drinking too much alcohol: Approximately 88,000 deaths each year are due to drinking too much alcohol; more than half due to binge drinking. About 38 million U.S. adults report binge drinking an average of four times a month and have an average of eight drinks per binge. Twenty-one years after entering medical school, I am definitely less naïve and a bit disheartened. But not distraught enough to stop

believing. Believing that there are ways to improve the health care system and belief in patients’ desire to change. As providers, we are the ones that need to lead our patients to health – putting responsibility and accountability back on our patients. Rather than handing them a list of prescription medications, give your patients a weekly nutrition and exercise journal. Keep them accountable with the use of ancillary staff. The health care system may be broken, but its pieces can still be repaired. About Dr. Diana Hoppe Dr. Diana Hoppe, an obstetrician and gynecologist, is the founder of Amazing Over 40 Inc. How Your Elderly Parents Can Stay Safe Without Losing the Comfort of Home By Desert Star Staff Our parents have cared for us all of their lives. Now, for those of us with parents of advancing age, it’s our turn to care for them. But what are the best options for providing ‘roundthe-clock supervision and support to an elderly parent? “The average yearly cost of an assisted living facility is $43,200 per year, and the cost of a nursing home with private room is over $90,000 a year according to the 2015 Genworth Cost of Care Survey,” said health care systems expert Jason Carroll, Senior Sales Manager of the fast growing health technology company, Vitall, Inc. “But even for families where such costs are not prohibitive, parents are often reluctant to be relocated from

their own homes, which are filled with years of happy memories, and placed into an unfamiliar environment, living with strangers.” As an inexpensive alternative to relocating parents to nursing homes and assisted living facilities, Carroll’s company has developed HeyMomDad, (www.heymomdad.com), the world’s first two-way communication and wellness monitoring system for seniors. The system allows children and loved ones to see and hear, in real time, that their elderly parents are safe and well simply by opening an app on their Smartphone any time during the day or night. “The system allows your mom or dad to press one button to talk to you or, if necessary, notify you if help is

needed,” said Carroll. “Once the notification appears on your phone, you just tap the HeyMomDad icon and you can instantly see, hear, and talk to your parent through the high quality HD video and two-way audio component that’s part of HeyMomDad.” Carroll said the HeyMomDad monitoring solution isn’t like other systems that simply call a monitoring service or dial 911. “Most seniors are very reluctant to call 911 in an emergency because they’re embarrassed or they don’t want to cause a fuss or incur an expense - which can be as high as $1,200 even for false alarms where paramedics were dispatched,” said Carroll. “But with the HeyMomDad solution, seniors have a February 17, 2016

choice: press the blue button on the Instant Alert Pager to alert only family and friends, or press the red button to alert family, friends and 911.” Carroll said the system’s high definition camera can be controlled through the smart phone and directed to any location in the room, permitting a full 270 degree view. The camera even boasts night vision for clear viewing in dark rooms where lights have been turned off. “What we’re offering families with elderly members is a way to stay close; a way to know in a second if your parent or grandparent is doing well. One button push and they’re connected to you.” said Carroll. “Just as importantly, HeyMomDad is a way for our parents to keep their

independence and live life the way they want - with honor and dignity in their own homes. Not only does it address the needs of seniors and their caregiving family members, it’s an excellent, low-cost alternative to engaging a nurse or moving to a senior living facility.” The HeyMomDad monitoring solution is easy to install with simple plugand-play functionality. The only requirement is a reliable connection to the Internet via any existing Ethernet modem (not included). For additional specifications, system options, and pricing information, please visit www.HeyMomDad.com.

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE - A new study of bilingual and monolingual toddlers could be reason for Washington parents to share this story in two languages. Research in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology shows children learning two languages perform better at certain problem-solving tasks than their monolingual peers. Cristina Crivello, a PhD student at the University of Concordia in Montreal who led the study, says one-and-a-half-year-old bilingual children have abilities that are beneficial for people at any age. “It’s these specific cognitive abilities like selective attention and cognitive flexibility where they have to focus on relevant information and ignore distracting information, says Crivello. Though there is no consensus yet on exactly how learning other languages improves the brain, Crivello suggests that switching

between languages mirrors the process of switching between tasks. Speaking another language can also improve children’s chances of getting a job later in life, both at home and abroad. Bridget Yaden, professor of Hispanic Studies, Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, whose third-grader is enrolled in a dual-immersion language program, says her son will be able to bring another set of skills to potential employers. Those employers could be in any number of countries around the world. “Just the general ability to learn a second language or a third language, says Yaden. “He could really go anywhere and be much more open to the cultural practices and really kind of make his way. Children immersed in other languages can more easily pick them up because their brains are more receptive to acquiring language. lobbying when greeting President Obama Friday. “I said, you know a lot of people from Chicago have homes here, Moon said. According to Moon, their conversation was only about 90 seconds, but he was able to tell Obama to consider moving to Palm Springs. “I said, you should really think about coming out here when you retire from the white house, Moon added. But, Moon was not the only one interested in convincing the president to move to a valley city. Dana Hobart, mayor of Rancho Mirage, told the president his city should be top pick. According to Moon, there is no doubt Palm Springs is the brand of the valley. “Palm Springs has always been the playground of movie stars and politicians and I think having someone of the stature of President Obama come out here after he finishes his two terms would be great, Moon said. Some valley residents also shared Moon’s excitement. They would welcome President

Obama with open arms. “That would be great, it would be great for the community, Rancho Mirage resident Saretia Igbinedion said. Others believe the thought of President Obama even considering the valley as his future home, is satisfying. “For him to be looking at this area to come and retire, it would be another great addition to the great things we have in Coachella Valley, Carrillo said. But what exactly can President Obama expect to find in the valley if he eventually moves here? Some residents believe it is the weather and many other reasons. “the community is receptive and we are great people, Igbinedion said. So at this point, it is anyone’s guess. According to Mayor Moon, the desert is a great place for the Obamas to live. It has great weather most of the year and when it gets too hot in the summer, the president’s Chicago home would only be a four-hour-flight away, he said. Source KMIR

‘We proved Einstein right!’ 100 years on, gravitational waves By Desert Star Staff Scientists at Washington’s National Science Foundation and Moscow State University have confirmed the discovery of Albert Einstein’s gravitational waves. The breakthrough, possibly the biggest in physics in a century, could be the key to new understanding of the universe. Recent rumors of the success in detecting gravitational waves, or as some scientists put it “very weak spacetime wiggles which propagate at the speed of light” were officially confirmed Thursday. “Ladies and gentlemen! We have detected gravitational waves, we did it!,” LIGO laboratory executive director David Reitze announced in Washington. “These gravitational waves were produced by two colliding black holes, [that] came together, merged and formed a single black hole about 1.3 billion years ago,” Reitze said. These ripples in the fabric of spacetime are one of the most important variables in Einstein’s theory of relativity and it took astronomers decades to detect them, although they were pretty sure that gravitational waves existed. The discovery has been made with the use of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) - a system of two detectors constructed to spot tiny vibrations from passing gravitational waves. Funded by the National Science Foundation, LIGO’s

identical detectors are located in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington. The observatories, which are “the most precise measuring device ever built,” recorded a signal on September 14, 2015, “nearly simultaneously,” and the signal “had a very specific characteristic,” the laboratories’ director said. “As time went forward, the frequency went up,” he explained, adding that it took scientists months of careful checking and analysis to confirm that what had been discovered was exactly gravitational waves. Each of the two black holes before merging had about 30 times the mass of the Sun, were 150 kilometers (93 miles) in diameter and accelerated to about half the speed of light. The detected collision also proved that the merging of binary black holes does exist in the universe. “Let’s say this: The first discovery of gravitational waves is a Nobel Prizewinning venture,” said physicist Bruce Allen of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hannover, Germany. But the prize will be most possibly given not to theorists, but those who are behind the mechanism that confirmed the existence of the waves, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Pavel Ivanov told RT. Russian scientists have massively contributed to both of the advances, Ivanov explained, mentioning Soviet scientist Yakov Zeldovich

and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Braginsky, who has been closely working with Kip Thorne, the American astrophysicist at the forefront of the discovery. The idea to look for the waves was suggested and published in science magazines by Soviet physicists Mikhail Gertsenshtein and Vladislav Pustovoit in 1962, and then developed further by academic Zeldovich and his followers, who explored the theory of gravitational waves. Braginsky and his teams have been working on developing detectors for LIGO. According to Einstein’s theory, published in 1916, the universe is made up of a “fabric of spacetime”: massive accelerating objects in the universe are believed to bend this fabric, causing ripples known as gravitational waves. The colliding of two black holes or merging of

two pulsars are among the presumable causes of such waves’ formation. “The theory describes geometry of space and time. When gravitational wave propagates, it changes [this] geometry,” Ivanov told RT, adding that “in general relativity and all modern studies of gravity the gravitational field is considered as something that is similar to the electromagnetic field.” “The discovery of gravitational waves could open a new window in our universe, because before we studied it only using electromagnetic [knowledge], and now we can do it in almost all wave bands, from radio waves to gamma rays,” Ivanov said. The ability to analyze the information carried on gravitational waves could potentially provide more insight into the Big Bang and other violent events in the history of the Universe,

and help to explore if other universes exist, what is inside Black Holes and even potentially pave the way for time travel. Although Einstein predicted that gravity travels in waves a century ago, detecting gravitational waves was not an easy task due to the fact that their effect is miniscule and easily confused with random noise. “Everything causes noise: a car passing by, a plane in the sky, or even tiny movements of the Earth’s crust. Detecting a signal amid all this noise is extremely difficult, although of course there are methods, both mathematical and technological - and it costs a lot of money,” Ivanov told RT. The discovery might lead to creation of new chapter in physics – quantum gravity, scientists believe. It will bring together the knowledge in Einstein’s theory and wave mechanics.

Conservation Groups Praise Drought Measures in President’s Budget Proposal

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES California conservation groups are cheering President Obama’s new budget proposal for fiscal year 2017 because it fully funds important antidrought measures. For example, the budget would put $2 million toward better instruments to measure the water flowing through the Klamath Basin. Brian Johnson, the California drought director for Trout Unlimited, says it’s important to have a precise measurement of the water supply. “It’s good for us to see the support for better data,” says Johnson. “It’s hard for us to make good decisions on water if we don’t know how much there is, and how much people are using. But that’s exactly the kind of thing that’s been hard to fund over the years.” The budget also increased

the funding for conservation programs within the U.S. Department of Agriculture to make farming operations more water-efficient. Jimmy Hague, director of the Center for Water Resources with the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, is glad the budget fully funds the Bureau of Reclamation’s Smart Water program. “That would be helping us use ag water more efficiently, but also improving some of the infrastructure, like pipes and canals, so we can wring some more water out of the system,” says Hague. Congress will now debate the President’s budget proposal and come up with a spending bill, which will be voted on this fall. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein introduced her own bill that focuses on investing in water recycling and desalination.

history. To me its streets are more enchanting than Paris. There, I have enjoyed hugs, kisses and a lover’s intimate affection. I stroll a lot, an excuse to conjure up memories. With lovers I went to particular bistros, bars, theaters and restaurants. Our menage haunts were elsewhere. The twain crisscrossed but seldom met. Favorite benches in St. Luke’s garden, where we three gazed at seasonal flowers, were the site of menage epiphanies. Our triad welcomed every season. Strolling under St. Luke’s cherry and apple trees added a bucolic note. Worshipping outside the church of coupledom and daring to write a book about it put the three of us at odds with our peers and childhood values, but brought emotional enrichment. We have flourished over two decades, longer than most marriages. Our threesome has changed, grown and survived. I’ve lived out my fantasies on several continents. I have not had it all, but I’ve sure had a ball!

Doing Good: Valentine’s Day At Manor Care By Julie Buehler PALM DESERT, Ca. - The month of February is all about you here at KMIR. We’re out doing good in the community. Hoping to inspire you to do random acts of kindness for those around you. It started with a suggestion from a KMIR Facebook friend, Holly Roby, she thought visiting local nursing homes and handing out Valentine’s would be a great way to give back. And so the KMIR crew including general manager Gene Steinberg, news director David Reese, senior producer Shawn Harkness, Gino Lamont and their own special Valentines, all gathered Sunday morning with flowers, candies, and cards for seniors, and coffee and bagels for the staff that takes care of them. And even more KMIR staff met us at Manor Care in Palm Desert. The morning was full of laughter and love. “So I’m joined here by Coco,” said KMIR forecaster Bryan Gallo, who set the scene for KMIR viewers. “At Manor Care Palm Desert, and it’s Valentine’s Day 2016...Coco looks absolutely beautiful... Wouldn’t you agree? Thank you! Yes!” “Judy, it’s so nice to meet you... Be my Valentines? www.desertstarweekly.com

Ok?”asked KMIR’s account executive Bill Smithers. One lucky gal received so many Valentine’s she had a tough time counting them all. “One, two, three, four, five... And and more... Quite the extraordinary day isn’t it! Absolutely, absolutely! Thank you so much!” For 91-year-old Carl Adams, Valentine’s Day is a day of remembrance. “Well, it reminds me of the happy days I had with my wife and family for so

many years. The Lord saw fit to take her to a better place after we’d been married 68 years, 5 months and 5 days.” And we had the opportunity to hear from 87-year-old Theora Prior who was surrounded her family. “My family is here with me today. And I greet you for being here! Happy Valentine’s Day...” And KMIR is working to make the Coachella Valley a better place to live and is using the month of February

doing good and encouraging you to pay it forward. You can make any day Valentine’s Day by sharing your love and time. If you’d like to apply to volunteer at Manor Care, applications are available at the front desk in Palm Desert. If you’d like to get involved in our campaign. You can submit a video of your act of kindness and be entered for a $1,000 prize. Courtesy of Flooring Innovations. Source KMIR

HOROSCOPES ARIES

It’s good to enter into solitude and retreat for a while. This builds strength and confidence. Your ruler (planet influencing Aries), Mars, calls you to a place of shelter, refuge, sanctuary, an inner harbor, so you can reflect upon the past and make plans quietly for the coming times, festivals and seasons. This is a gift of time and contemplation. Attend church.

TAURUS You find yourself constantly thinking about groups. It’s because they need your quiet, efficient, illuminating mind, practical direction and determined focus. Behind all your words and ideas are these realities; it’s time to salvage (restore) the world and much sacrifice must come from all of us. When you lead, everyone follows.

GEMINI What talents and abilities do you want to be recognized for in helping to construct the new world? What gifts of self do you want to offer as part of the New Group of World Servers (NGWS)? A task of the NGWS is to radiate forth new ideas that become

an ideal within humanity to create the new culture and civilization. What are your thoughts on these things? Actually, where are you?

CANCER An interesting situation is occurring. You now have the freedom to choose one or more of many paths. Your life becomes filled with possibilities and potential. You will be impressed with complex information while simultaneously perceiving multiple realities. You have entered a new journey, a new path, a higher mind understanding, a brilliance.

LEO You might find that religious themes form an important area of study. Altruism becomes your keynote and people begin to perceive you as philosophical, idealistic and visionary. You will have inspired insights that assist first yourself and then others. You imagine other lands, people’s cultures and worlds. It’s good to build a boat, eat fish, swim in warm waters.

VIRGO At times you find yourself functioning in other worlds and

feel compassion for others growing daily. Be very aware of shared finances and resources and never feel deprivation. There is no deprivation. There is only goodness, everywhere. God is always good. Some obligations and responsibilities call. Serve like Mother Theresa.

LIBRA Libran’s always yearn for “the other,” striving to harmonize intimates, friends, family, business colleagues and loved ones. Through others we step outside ourselves. Others invite us to grow and become more whole. It’s painful. Relationships, especially family, hone our rough edges. This is the design embedded within relationships. What is your story?

SCORPIO This is a time set aside to care for your health. Know that you are the best there is. And now, do you have a long held dream and/or vision? Do not become disillusioned. This will affect your health. Do not overwork or allow any excessive worry. You will never fail. You are never lost. There is only the journey. Right now.

SAGITTARIUS

There are times you may struggle with disillusion and disappointment concerning relationships and professional endeavors. In the midst of these you find a surge of creativity and recognition in the world. Feeling your inner powers still to be expressed, you long to do something significant. You’re talented and lucky. Sometimes sacrifice plays a part. You need \peace and seclusion in a big garden.

CAPRICORN Communication is most important now. You look beneath the surface of words people are speaking to understand the complete picture. If we listen to communications through the question “what needs are being expressed here?” the hidden psychological messages become clear. Seek solitude when creating, writing or doing imaginative work. You only confide in the very few.

be more easily understood in coming months. You can tap into unusual resources. There is always the supply you need. Share generously.

PISCES You’re not an everyday sort of person. You don’t have the energy of Aries or the steadfastness of Taurus, the business acumen of Capricorn or the relating skills of Libra. You’re in touch with other states of reality, different values based on spiritual motivations. Know that you always have the ability to be thankful and have gratitude. You need music, art, culture, and to plant your spring garden from seeds. Happy Birthday, Pisces. vote in the nine-member court, though he tends to side with the conservatives more often than not. Here are five crucial cases currently being considered by the Supreme Court that will be affected by Scalia’s passing. The Supreme Court’s current session will likely end in late June.

Affirmative Action On December 9, 2015, the court heard arguments in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, in which a white applicant to the school, Abigail Fisher, said the school’s admission policies, were discriminatory and supposedly favored minorities with lesser qualifications, which led to her rejection. Scalia has led the conservative bloc’s suspicion of affirmative action efforts, especially in the Fisher case.

“I don’t think it stands to reason that it’s a good thing for the University of Texas to admit as many blacks as possible,” he said during oral arguments. Despite Scalia’s absence, the case may still be decided in favor of the petitioner, as Justice Kagan has recused herself, meaning a possible 4-3 vote against the university’s admission policies. Public labor union dues On January 11, the court heard arguments in Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, which is based around a challenge to the legality of public unions collecting mandatory “fair share” collective bargaining union dues from non-union employees. The case was headed for an almost certain 5-4 decision in favor of the petitioner, Friedrichs. Without Scalia, a 4-4 tie from the court – should it publicly announce a decision – would uphold a lower court’s affirmation of public union practices. Abortion clinic restrictions On March 2, the judges were set to hear arguments in Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt, likely the most

important reproductive rights case before the court in more than two decades. The case centers around a challenge to a 2013 Texas state law that, petitioners say, would mean the closure of around 75 percent of the state’s abortion clinics. The law established severe restrictions on doctors and abortion facilities in the state. The court’s decision would address whether the law places an undue burden on women who seek abortions, a legal medical procedure; and if the law would actually protect women’s health, which Texas officials have claimed. The case seems headed for a 4-4 tie, barring support for the petitioners from Justice Kennedy. Contraception and Obamacare On March 23, the court is scheduled to hear arguments in Zubik v. Burwell, a challenge to the contraception mandate in the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The petitioners, including religious non-profit entities including hospitals and universities, say they have moral objections to birth control coverage in health insurance they provide employees, even though the law accommodates them by

requiring insurance companies and the federal government to provide contraceptives instead of these organizations. The institutions say the arrangement represents indirect participation in the provision of contraceptives, and they are calling for exclusions to the law. The federal government says these employers have workers who do not share the same religious beliefs, and would thus be harmed by exclusions. A Scalia-led conservative bloc was poised for victory in the case. Now, a 4-4 tie is likely, unless the case is re-heard once a new, ninth justice is in place.

Immigration In April, the court is set to hear arguments in United States v. Texas, a case concerning President Obama’s executive order that would shield more than 4 million undocumented immigrants from deportation, allowing them to work indefinitely, and legally, in the US. Lower courts ruled against the proposal. A case decision, if announced, seems destined for a 4-4 tie, unless Obama can gain support from one conservative justice. www.desertstarweekly.com

Obama administration approves first US factory in Cuba

By Desert Star Staff Washington has greenlighted construction of

the first US factory in Cuba in more than half a century. The factory will be built by

an Alabama company, to sell tractors to the socialist country’s private farmers.

The Cuban government has created a special economic zone 30 miles west of Havana specifically to attract foreign investment, and business partners Saul Berenthal, who is Cuban-born, and Horace Clemmons sought to capitalize on this. The Treasury Department told the businessmen last week that they are allowed to build the $510 million factory that produces heavy farm equipment. “Everybody wants to go to Cuba to sell something and that’s not what we’re trying to do. We’re looking at the problem and how do we help Cuba solve the problems that they consider are the most important problems for them to solve,” Clemmons said, according to AP. “It’s our belief that in the long run we both win if we do things that are beneficial to both countries.” Cuban authorities

have already endorsed the project, and Berenthal and Clemmons have said that they plan to start producing tractors by early 2017. This would mark the significant first business investment in Cuba since Fidel Castro and the Communist Party took power in the 1959 Cuban Revolution, and confiscated billions of dollars of US property on the island. In response to that mass nationalization, the US government slapped the island nation with a strict embargo that prohibited just about all forms of commerce. More than five decades later, Barack Obama has started loosening the restrictions on trade with Cuba toward the end of his second term. US companies are now allowed to export products to sell to private farmers in Cuba, where most economic activity is under strict state control. The Obama administration plans to continue such measures, in order to repair the relationship between the United States and Cuba. The new “Oggun” tractor plant will build 25-horsepower tractors that sell for under $10,000, Berenthal and Clemmons said, according to AP. The partners believe that they can sell hundreds of tractors a year to Cuban farmers with help from relatives abroad sending back remittances. Cuba suffers from low agricultural output in part due to the lack of farming equipment. A government bureaucracy tightly controls the price of supplies and produce. In addition to selling to Cuba, Berenthal and Clemons say that they will export tractors produced at Oggun to other nations in Latin America, which have lower tariffs on Cuban products than on US-made merchandise. The partners also said that they will begin importing components from the United States, but they eventually hope to begin manufacturing many of the parts locally. Oggun will begin with only 30 Cuban employees, but this number could grow to as many as 300 within five years. “I think it’ll have a tremendous impact on their ability not only to help their economy but to set an example across the Caribbean and Latin America,” Berenthal said. The United States and Cuba are thawing relations that have been icy for over 55 years. On Saturday, Cuba said that it had returned an American Hellfire missile that was mistakenly shipped from Paris to Havana in 2014. On Tuesday, the US’s Secretary of Transportation and Cuba’s Transport Minister are set to sign an agreement authorizing the first regular commercial flights between the countries since the 1959 revolution.

T H E AT R E ‘Hail Caesar’ Hail Oscar

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

“Hail Caesar,” from the Coen brothers Joel and Ethan, is a loving spoof and homage to the movies of yesteryear. Told with plenty of inside humor, it takes place in the very early 50’s as we go behind the scenes for a day in the life of production studio head Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin). The studio, Capitol Pictures, is just about to complete “A Tale of the Christ” starring Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) who suddenly disappears before completing his final, and very important speech in the film, requiring a close-up. Besides tracking down the star, Mannix also has to protect Whitlock’s rather dubious image from a pair of identical twin gossip columnists, Thora and Thesaly Thacker, both played with gusto by Tilda Swinton. They literally hate each other and constantly seek to out-scoop one another. Like the gossip gals of the ’50s, Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons, each Thacker sister wears a different flamboyant hat whenever she appears on screen. Along with the whodone-it aspect of Whitlock’s disappearance, the film deftly recreates a variety of film genres from the era. One of the most colorful is a sequence based on the aquatic choreography Busby Berkley designed for Esther Williams in “Million Dollar Mermaid.” This time the singing, diving mermaid is DeeAnna Moran (Scarlet Johannson). Unlike Williams, DeeAnna is a

brassy, tough-talking gal who is finding it hard to fit into her fishtail because she’s pregnant. She’s also currently unmarried, though she’s tied the knot twice before without success. Once again, Mannix has to work this out before the Thacker hackers find out and link scandal to their star and the studio. One of the most charming performers in the film is Alden Ehrenreich, who plays the studio’s very popular singing cowboy, Hobart “Hobie” Doyle. Hobie has a slow drawl, a quick smile and is perfect as a rope spinning, horse-riding hero. So of course, the N.Y. studio head wants to star him in a drawing room drama being directed by Laurence Laurentz (Ralph Fiennes). Alas poor Hobie doesn’t sound at all British, no matter how hard he tries. In fact he can’t even pronounce Laurentz’s name. In the course of his frenetic day, Mannix also visit’s the set of a tap dancing musical starring Burt Gurney (Channing Tatum) who would be played by Gene Kelly back in the 50s. Older audience members will appreciate all these references, but the movie is a fun romp for film buffs regardless of age. Others in the all-star cast include Frances McDormand and Jonah Hill. The film is rated PG-13 for some suggestive content and smoking. And speaking of smoking, movies back then constantly featured cigarette usage. In the 50’s, smoking wasn’t a no-no.

Back in the 50‘s, so beautifully recalled in the Coen brothers’ spiffy, spoofy film “Hail Caesar,” Oscars were awarded with these words….”and the Winner Is.“ Today that phrase is taboo, a politically incorrect insult to the four in each category who don’t get to take home the coveted little golden guy. Now, in an overly sensitive new era of cinema, the correct words are….”and the Oscar goes to….” As I gaze into my somewhat cloudy crystal ball, here are my predictions that are further guided by checking out the winners (oops) from other ceremonies like the SAG and Director’s Guild Awards, as well as BAFTA and Golden Globe honorees. A shoe-in for Best Actor is Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Revenant” since he has garnered every award imaginable to date. I also have a strong hunch that Sylvester Stallone will walk away with the Oscar for his supporting role in “Creed” since he is the sentimental favorite and also won the Golden Globe. Brie Larson has already earned a SAG and BAFTA award for her role in “The Room.” She also received

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Air Museum held its, To The Limit And Beyond, annual black tie and military attire Gala on Feb 12th. The Gala honored the Courage of Our Forgotten Heroes from the Vietnam and Southeast Asia battles. The evening started with a cocktail reception in one of the large hangars with the doors open so guests could view some of the planes and other planes graced the hanger inside. The gala was sold out with a capacity of over 550 people. It was striking to see so many men in uniform with loads of medals hanging from their chests. Guests had their photos taken by a plane and members of the Wayne Foster band strolled thru the crowd singing and dancing. The Gala honored 6 men who were at a camp that was going to be overrun by about 2000 Vietnam soldiers. 12 A Team soldiers were there and they successfully defended Camp Tong Le Chon with the

help of General Ken Miles from the air. The men at the camp called for help and Gen. Ken Miles flew to drop bombs at the enemy. Miles ran out of ammunition and went back, refitted and returned to help the men at Camp Tong Le Chon. The courage of these men was honored at this Gala. Gen. Ken Miles was honored posthumously for his bravery. Eight men survived the battle and four were in attendance to receive their honor. Several videos were shown about the camp and speaker Colonel John M, “Mike” Morgan spoke about the bravery of the men on the ground and said they have the hardest job. As a flier, he has great respect for those men and feels privileged to support them whenever he can. Its teamwork between the men on the ground and the men in the air, that wins the battles. Morgan introduced the honorees of the night. Samuel A Seetin,Jr. LTC SF USA,<Ret>, Dr. Gary Keith Neller, LTC SF

USA>Ret>, Earl E. Berg, LTC SF USA<Ret>, Wendell K. Enos MSG SF USA<Ret> and Stephen Geist SSG SF USAKIA whose sister came in his place. Honoree James Bolan LTC SF USA,Ret> was unable to attend. Each honoree spoke during a short video, some noting the horrible treatment they got on their return. One said he was asked why they didn’t win the war and he said they got tired of killing children. Fred Bell, Managing Director, spoke and also served as announcer of the people donating money to help build the Gen. Ken Miles hangar to house Vietnam era planes and memorabilia. 2.2 Million is needed and they have raised a little over half so far. The Palm Springs High School Band entertained as guests entered. Desert Hot Springs High School ROTC presented the Colors and served as escorts. The Wayne Foster Band entertained during the dinner and dancing after the program.

Mannix (Brolin) is ahead of his time and is desperately trying to kick the habit in this very clever Coen brothers tribute to the movies of the not so distant past

George Clooney as Ceasar a Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice award so I now proclaim Brie the lucky leading lady in the Best Actress category. Since Alicia Vikander won the SAG and Critic’s Choice honors, my hunch is she will also take home the Gold for her supporting role in “The Danish Girl.” “The Revenant” took tops honors at the Golden Globes and BAFTA ceremonies this year and Mexican director, Alejandro G. Inarritu (who won last year for “Birdman”) also garnered the Director’s Guild Award. If he wins, and it looks promising, this would mark two consecutive Oscars for Inarritu. Only two other directors have

achieved this honor. In 1949 and 50 Joseph L. Mankiewiez won for “A Letter to Three Wives” and “All About Eve.” Prior to that, in 1939 and 40, John Ford took home the Oscar for “The Grapes of Wrath” and “How Green Was My Valley.” I am sure that “Inside Out” will bring added glory to the Disney studios. It was not only nominated in the Best Animated Film category, it earned a nomination for Best Original Screenplay as well. I have a hunch the Original Screenplay Oscar will go to “Spotlight” and “The Big Short” will receive the Adapted Screenplay, but Best Animated Film honors will go to “Inside Out.”

band, The Eagles, has died in New York aged 67, leaving behind a trove of timeless music masterpieces including seventeen Top-40 hits. Frey died Monday in New York from complications stemming from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia while recovering from intestinal surgery. The music legend had been sick since last year and in December The Eagles postponed their appearance at the Kennedy Center Honors due to Frey’s illness. As a member of The Eagles, Frey won six Grammy Awards and five American Music Awards landing the band into the Rock and

The Eagles became one of the most dominant bands of the 1970s with hits such as “Take It Easy,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Take it to the Limit,” “Best of My Love,” “New Kid in Town” and “Heartache Tonight.” One of the band’s crowning achievements was the “Hotel California” album that produced an

that is not happening in other cities. Since President Obama has visited the Valley, six times they can say they have seen it often. This main purpose outside of golfing is the Summit scheduled with Southeast Asia leaders at Sunnylands before the President leaves on the 16th of February. Discussions with 10 Asian Nations leaders www.desertstarweekly.com

will focus on trade with China and North Korea. Other topics relating to business and other issues will be brought forth for a discussion with all the leaders present. Barbara Sinatra Children’s annual Champions Luncheon

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center held his annual Champions Luncheon that raises money for programs at the Center. Champions Bug Selig and Baseball Icon Hank Aaron were the main celebrities for the luncheon. Another celebrity Jill St.John was given a special award for being a founding member of the Aunts Club that supports the Center with yearly donations. The Aunts and Uncles Clubs are the mainstay of the Center that helps physically, sexual and emotionally abused children. Their donations provide the much-needed programs and helps children without finances to pay. None are ever turned away from help the center provides. The last part of the program was a Q & A with Bud Selig asking Hank Aaron about his career. The talk started with Aaron when he was only 18 and left home with his mothers last $2. He said you could live on $2 cause it bought a lot of peanut butter. He told of a time when he had eggs and rocks thrown at him when he first started. Then he said that Jackie Robinson paved the way

Blackhawks Baseball team surrounds Hank Aaron and Bud Selig. Photo by Pat Krause Honoree Jill St. John, Actor Robert Wagner and Barbara Sinatra. Photo by Pat Krause for black men to play sports. Aaron also said that without Jackie there probably wouldn’t have been a Hank Aaron and the records he broke. Selig and Aaron have been friends for many years as you could tell Selig holds a lot of respect for this amazing baseball legend and the admiration is mutual on Aaron’s part, close to sixty years of friendship. Selig asked Aaron who was the toughest pitcher you faced and he said Curt Simmons as he had a different way of pitching he had trouble adjusting to. He said another great pitcher was Sandy Koufax. Aaron mentioned many names he said were the best players in baseball. Selig

asked Aaron about breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record. Aaron said it was a sad time he couldn’t enjoy because he got death threats from people. It was a bad time for him and his family. Aaron’s records are some that players are still trying to beat. I don’t have enough space to tell about all the questions and answers from these two amazing men. Selig mentioned that Aaron and his wife started, chasing a Dream Foundation, to help youngsters reach a goal in life. Aaron noted that he applauds all those who have used their fame, celebrity and money to help children and was proud of Barbara Sinatra and the work she does at the Center. Selig

Hank Aaron and Bud Selig. Photo by Pat Krause said that history would say that Hank Aaron was as great a man off the field as on with the work he does for the children.

Both Aaron and Selig stayed on stage to greet fans, pose for photos and give autographs.

Steve Solomon. Photo by Pat Krause By Pamela Price Steve Solomon’s Cannoli, Latkes & Guilt! (the therapy continues) broke the laugher barrier at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert Feb. 11th and 12th when Mr. Solomon, actor and author began his nonstop narrative. He is a three-time award winner with the classic production, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m in Therapy. It has played to sold out rowds throughout

America and overseas. “My mother was born in Palermo, Sicily, my father in a Russian shtetl (village) but both grew up in Brooklyn,” Solomon says. He picked up a lot from the multi-ethnic neighborhood of Sheepshead Bay where he lived the life that is now his original script. He opened with his take on the TSA and how they handle airport passengers, such as a 95year old woman who was

unceremoniously searched for contraband. This spin on TSA insanity raises security theater to a new level. Solomon’s talent at imitating accents is legendary. Without offending any one Jewish or Italian, his take on the idiosyncratic interactions of two disparate but similar cultures brings humor to a new (pardon the pun) stage. His work is recognized as being one of the longest running one-man comedy shows in off -Broadway history. I can confirm the formula works in eliciting giggles, having been seated in the February 10, 2016

third balcony, near the last row at the McCallum Theatre: I couldn’t stop laughing at Mr. Solomon’s remarkable range of dialects. Descriptions of his mother and father were spot-on Solomon originals. The opinions shared by his parents on everything from cooking to sex, in Italian and Yiddish, brought back memories to many in the audience and even his spins on bathroom humor, feminine products and how he survived growing up with his twin sister were hilarious. Keep in mind, Solomon was formerly a physics teacher and school administrator in

Long Island, NY. The couple in front of me confirmed to me that all of the voices and gesticulations were definitely ‘genuine Solomon’ as are his dedicated theatre fans as well as followers on social media. As long as Steve Solomon continues delving into his past on stage, there is an opportunity to catch a glimpse of growing up during a another, less digitally-cluttered era in American culture where humor flourished, only to be rediscovered in the 21st century. President Obama to Declare Three New Monuments in SoCal

By Desert Star Staff The southern California desert soon will have three new national monuments Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow and Castle Mountains. The White House announced today that President Obama intends to use his authority this week under the Antiquities Act to establish the monuments, since Congress has failed to act on them. Clifford Trafzer, a professor of history and American Indian Affairs at the University of California-Riverside, said the designation is very important for scholars and should help protect the area’s heritage. “This pact will provide a layer of protection for cultural resources - including archaeological objects, village sites, burials that will tell us about life during a time of many cultural and

climate changes,” he said. National monument status means the lands will be permanently protected and the public can continue to access these places for outdoor recreation activities. In addition, any pre-existing mining and industrial claims still will be honored. Susan Sorrells, whose family has owned a small hotel and RV park in Shoshone since the 1970s, said these areas already draw millions of tourists and support thousands of jobs. She expects monument designation to boost the local economy even more. “Being fourth-generation, I’m really tied to the land,” she said, “and so, I see ecotourism as a win-win for everyone - for the land, for the communities, and a winwin for the tourists, because

President Obama announced the creation of a new Mojave Trails National Monument today, along with two others: Sand to Snow and Castle Mountains. (bryn_jones) the land is so awesome.” The new monuments also establish wildlife corridors, protecting habitat for thousands of desert

species, including the bighorn sheep and desert tortoise. Mojave Trails will link the Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree National

Park. “Sand to Snow” links the San Gorgonio Wilderness to Joshua Tree and the San Bernardino National Forest.

MUSIC Songcraft takes center stage on new discs BY ROBERT KINSLER

Americana and classic songwriting takes center stage on a number of new releases, including an essential Johnny Cash live disc, two JD Souther reissues and new albums from genre-defying master artist Emitt Rhodes and Aussie country music outlaw Henry Wagons.

Artist: Johnny Cash Title: Koncert v Praze (Columbia / Legacy Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Johnny Cash Tell me more: “Koncert v Praze” (“In Prague-Live) is more than a great concert recording that captured Johnny Cash on April 11, 1978. Cash was a 46-year-old artist already on his way to legendary status when he accepted an offer to go behind the Iron Curtain and perform four concerts in Czechoslovakia. And as this historic recording proves (finally released as a stand-alone CD in February 2016; for years

it was only available via vinyl in Czechoslovakia), this was a fateful encounter allowing a small thaw in U.S.-Czech relations and introducing American music to audiences in the Soviet block via four sold-out shows that played out to approximately 40,000. The recording itself sounds fantastic, with the set including energetic performances of “Ring of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk the Line” and other favorites from the groundbreaking Man in Black. Information: LegacyRecordings.com.

Artist: Emitt Rhodes Title: Rainbow Ends (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: JD Souther, James Taylor Tell me more: It’s hard to imagine a more dramatic return than exhibited by Emitt Rhodes on his new album “Rainbow Ends.” His first new album in 43 years (you read that right; 43 years), an impressive cast of talented musicians including

Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Jason Falkner (founding members of Jellyfish and currently members of Beck’s band), Aimee Mann, Susanna Hoffs, Jon Brion, Wilco’s Nels Cline and members of Brian Wilson’s band help elevate the great songwriting displayed across “Rainbow Ends.” A bona fide cult hero among lovers of power-pop for his 1971 eponymous debut, the 65-year-old Rhodes’ voice is a wonder able to sing melodic pop (“This Wall Between Us,” “Put Some Rhythm To It”) and emotive baroque popfused ballads (“Isn’t It So,” “I Can’t Tell My Heart”) with graceful authority. Information: omnivorerecordings.com.

Cash, Australian singersongwriter Henry Wagons has a rich baritone voice. As he proves on his first-ever solo effort “After What I Did Last Night…,” Wagons (a member of the popular Melbourne-based alt-country band Wagons since 1999) is a master of blending Americana soundscapes and original songcraft. Wagons left Down Under for Nashville to record this album, and the result is a collection of biting songs that blend lyrical wit and real-world insight at every turn. Songs twist and turn in unique ways (just listen to “Santa Fe”) that thrill while simultaneously celebrating authentic country western, modern-day rock and Americana with the originality of the Felice Brothers and Sturgill Simpson. Information: wagonsmusic.com.

Artist: Henry Wagons Title: After What I Did Last Night… (Goldview / MGM) You might like if you enjoy: Sturgill Simpson, Johnny Cash, the Felice Brothers Tell me more: Like the late country music great Johnny

Artist: JD Souther Titles: Black Rose; Home by Dawn (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you

enjoy: Glenn Frey, The Eagles, Jackson Browne Tell me more: Best known for a number of notable songs written for the celebrated likes of the Eagles (including “Best of My Love,” “Heartache Tonight” and “New Kid in Town”) and Linda Ronstadt (“Faithless Love”), the Detroit native’s own solo works are thankfully now being reintroduced to modernday listeners via expanded editions from Omnivore Recordings (that each include wonderful illustrated booklets too). His second solo effort, 1976’s “Black Rose” and 1984’s “Home by Dawn” mark the second stage of Souther releases and both are stellar. “Black Rose” includes plenty of Souther’s infectious and artful songwriting, including the spirited “Your Turn Now” and the introspective countryminded ballad “Simple Man, Simple Dream.” Among the seven bonus tracks is a beautiful live version of “Faithless Love.” Recorded almost a decade after “Black Rose,” Souther’s fourth album “Home by Dawn” found the artist continuing to refine his song craft. The rollicking title track, propulsive “Say You Will” (a duet with Linda Ronstadt) and gorgeous piano ballad “I’ll Take Care of You” are among the many winning cuts on “Home by Dawn.” Information: omnivorerecordings.com.

By Desert Star Staff A new legal cannabis shop in the US state of Colorado is receiving potshots for its proximity to a strip club and ties with the mayor. The Smokin’ Gun Apothecary opened in the space previously occupied by the popular strip club Shotgun Willie’s, which is now across the parking lot. The wife of the mayor, who apparently thinks there is a crossover audience, owns both businesses. Deborah Dunafon wants to offer tokens discounted drinks

at the strip club by selling mugs. She also thinks the stoners will bring a chiller vibe to her not-so-gentlemanly club. “It’s a wild, rowdy place, and if you smoke a bowl, you’re not exactly rowdy,” she said. In Colorado, local governments can decide whether they want to allow private pot clubs, but selling both weed and alcohol in the same place is banned. There is no regulation for mixing marijuana and pleasure, but the close quarters of the pot shop and strip joint

has caused some concern regarding the sale of alcohol. Mayor Mike Dunafan, the other half of the power couple, took some heat last year when he was the deciding vote on the Glendale City Council to approve the Smokin Gun’s site plan. Although the couples weren’t married at the time, they were living together, leading to complaints about a conflict of interest. The pot shop has just opened and boasts two spliff-shaped pillars at the entrance with smoke effects.

In

addition to being a member of the Palm Springs High School Orchestra, Figueroa plays with the Valley Strings Community Orchestra and the Palm Spring HS String Quartet. Figueroa performs as a soloist at community events as well. “The orchestra experience has been so important to me,” said Figueroa. “It shaped who I am and made me realize the person I want to be.” “I’m looking forward to performing with the Beatles show but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous,” said Figueroa. The senior plans to attend the University of Redlands after graduation and pursue a career in music education. Alex Salazar has playing the violin for three years. “I wanted to learn to play the violin because it was so different and it stood out,” said Salazar. He is a member of the Palm Springs High Orchestra, String Quartet and the Valley Strings Community Orchestra. Salazar is a member of PSHS’s Varsity Wrestling Team and president of the Coding Club, an on-campus

group dedicated to computer programming. The junior aspires to attend college after graduation and major in Bioengineering. Alex Moore has been playing the violin for four years and also plays the bass clarinet. “I like the tone of the cello and the music parts written for the instrument,” said Moore. Moore is a member of the school marching band and performed with an all city honors band in middle school. He previously played with the Valley Strings Community Orchestra. “I enjoy playing with an orchestra because we get to play classical music instead of contemporary music,” said Moore. The senior, who has been a member of his school’s ROTC unit for three years, plans to enlist in the U.S. Air Force after graduation. Camille Gaede has been playing the viola for two years. “The viola has such a rich sound,” said Gaede. “It’s a very different instrument.” Gaede plays with her school’s orchestra, string quartet and the Valley Strings Community Orchestra. She was a member of the Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony. She is a member of her school’s JV Tennis Team and played club soccer. In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering with the National Charity League and other organizations. The senior hopes to attend Augustana University in Sioux City, South Dakota after graduation. Gaede is the quartet’s Beatles fan. “I like the passion that the Beatles had for their music,” she said. “It’s upbeat and fun music.” And here is some additional information about Palm Springs High School Orchestra Director Jason Powell: As the Director of Strings at Palm Springs High School, Powell re-established the PSHS Symphonic Orchestra after a 25-year hiatus and has built the Classical Guitar

Ensembles and Orchestral Strings Programs. Palm Springs High is the only high school in the Coachella Valley to have such programs. The various string ensembles perform at numerous private parties, conventions, and workshops including national and multinational events, and have strong ties to the surrounding colleges and universities Powell earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education in Classical Guitar with a minor in Percussion from the University of Redlands in 2007. From there he moved onto his Master’s Degree remaining at Redlands in Guitar Performance before moving to Boston University where he graduated with a Master’s Degree in Music Education. Dr. Powell has completed his Doctorate in Educational Justice and Leadership from his Alma matter, the University of Redlands. In addition, Dr. Powell completed graduate course work at Florida State, Ohio State, and Chapman University, as well as, specialty studies in string pedagogy, Kodaly Methods, and the California credentialing to teach Music A.P. Theory. Powell remains an active musician in the community, performing with the Joshua Tree Phil-Harmonic (violin II), the Desert Chamber Orchestra (violin II), and the Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church (guitar & percussion). He also performs in the biyearly PSHS musicals (The Phantom of the Opera - cello, Beauty and the Beast – cello, and Hairspray – guitar). He is a recipient of several awards including Outstanding Teacher at Palm Springs High School (2012), an induction in to the C.O.D. Hall of Fame as Alumni of the Year (College of the Desert 2012), and the RotaryAlumni award for Excellence in Instrumental Performance (2004). Powell also served as the conductor of the Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony in 2012.

Grammys featured nearly as many tributes as new music were at home was surreal. It still seems surreal.”

FUNK IT UP “Uptown Funk” was the year’s most ubiquitous song, and when it won record of the year, Ronson paid tribute to some funk forebears including George Clinton, who smiled from the audience. Said Mars: “We wouldn’t be up here if it wasn’t for the people dancing to this song.”

Kendrick Lamar performs at the 58th annual Grammy Awards on Monday, Feb. 15, 2016 By David Bauder Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift and Alabama Shakes were the biggest winners at a Grammy Awards ceremony that, due to the recent deaths of some seminal stars, felt as much a tribute to music’s past as its present. Monday’s ceremony included performances honoring David Bowie, Glenn Frey, B.B. King, Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire and Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, along with an extended clip of Natalie Cole. All died within the past year. Lamar scored five Grammys for his breakthrough album “To Pimp a Butterfly,” the night’s biggest haul. But he was shut out of Grammy’s Big Four. Swift won top album for “1989,” Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars earned top record for “Uptown Funk,” Ed Sheeran won song of the year for “Thinking Out Loud” and Meghan Trainor was named best new artist. LAMAR’S BREAKOUT Besides his five Grammys, Lamar had one of the night’s most intense, riveting performances. A week after Beyonce’s Super Bowl show saluted the black power movement, Lamar opened his “The Blacker the Berry” performance in chains, dressed in a prison uniform along with several dancers. A fire burned behind him as he rapped “Alright,” and a backdrop included a map of Africa with the California city “Compton” written on it. Actor Don Cheadle noted that Lamar’s disc “daringly incorporated jazz, funk, soul and pure poetry into a hip-hop masterpiece.” He earned a shoutout from President Barack Obama’s White House twitter feed. He won best rap album, rap performance, rap song, rap/sung performance and music video. But his disappearance from CBS’ broadcast after the first hour is sure to renew debate over Grammy voters’ attitudes toward rap.

“Each of the categories has its own flavor and its own experts who are in the academy who have a particular passion and knowledge about it,” said Neil Portnow, recording academy president, adding that the largest number of academy members vote in the big categories. TAYLOR’S TOUCHE Swift’s show-opening performance of “Out of the Woods” was marred by sound problems of the sort that later bedeviled Adele and Alice Cooper. Yet her album of the year win - the second of her career in that category - was a particularly timely triumph. She addressed fellow women artists in her acceptance speech. “There are going to be people along the way who try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame,” she said. She urged others not to be sidetracked by the naysayers and know that when they succeed, it will be the people who loved you who put you there. The clear but unspoken reference was to Kanye West, who several years ago grabbed a microphone from Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards and last week released a song with a crude comment about her and suggestion that he made her famous. Swift’s “1989” also won best pop vocal album, and she won a video award for “Bad Blood.” TRIBUTE TIME The tributes to the deceased stars took several forms. Stevie Wonder, wishing that Earth, Wind & Fire’s White “rest in eternal bliss and peace,” sang “That’s The Way of the World” with the vocal group Pentatonix. Surviving Eagles members, joined by Jackson Browne, played a stately version of “Take it Easy,” with a giant Frey portrait backing them as

the song came to a close. Lady Gaga’s Bowie tribute was a visual wonder, with one of this generation’s most visually arresting artists honoring one whose biggest moments were decades ago. The visuals overwhelmed the music, though, and Gaga may have been better served not trying to pack too many hits in. A commercial immediately following the performance for a technology company involved in the production was a discordant note, too. SHAKING IT Alabama Shakes won three awards and plenty of respect. Lead singer Brittany Howard, during a performance of “Don’t Wanna Fight,” conveyed more power and emotion in just her voice than the noisy Hollywood Vampires supergroup of Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp and Joe Perry did with a mess of tattoos, flames, flashing lights and loud guitars. “Don’t Wanna Fight” won Grammys for best rock song and rock performance. “I never imagined,” Howard said later backstage. “I know it sounds cliche, but it’s true. Having to speak to that many people knowing all our friends and family

MOM & DAD Ed Sheeran made moms and dads throughout the television audience melt by saluting his beaming parents after winning song of the year. Sheeran, who also won best pop vocal performance, noted that he had flown them over three times before after he was nominated but hadn’t won. Grammy producers severely shortchanged his cowriter on “Thinking Out Loud,” Amy Wadge, by cutting away before she could even speak. Meghan Trainor, after winning best new artist, couldn’t fight off the tears. Neither could her dad in the audience. “My heart was exploding,” she said later. “I was like, ‘don’t forget anyone and don’t have snot running your face. Don’t forget your parents.” SITTING IT OUT Rihanna was due to perform near the top of the show, but didn’t make it because he doctor ordered her to rest her voice for two days. MULTIPLE TROPHIES Other multiple Grammy winners on Monday included The Weeknd, Skrillex and Diplo, Chris Stapleton, Little Big Town and Jason Isbell. New comedy production at the Ahmanson Theatre

L-R: Sean Hayes and David Josefsberg in “An Act of God,” written by God, transcribed by David Javerbaum and directed by Joe Mantello. Photo by Craig Schwartz By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic It isn’t easy being GOD these days. He’s dealing with a lot of blow-back from his children. The natives who have been reluctantly obedient off and on over the millennia are restless again. They’re in one of their ‘we want straight answers this time’ moods. When GOD, the bearer of good or bad news, makes one of his rare appearances to his earth-bound children, he wisely chooses comedy as the medium of communication. The pain of hearing the truth is mercifully muted by audience laughter in his visit to the Ahmanson Theatre’s current production. “An Act of GOD”, written by David Javerbaum, former head comedy writer of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”, is a clever and smartly directed comedy by Broadway veteran Joe Mantello, and is a perfect fit for the talent of its star Sean Hayes. Hayes cut his comedy chops on the popular TV series “Will & Grace”. This time, however, Hayes playing GOD naturally gets top billing. He has the Ahmanson stage all to himself. The only exceptions are his two favorite angels – Gabriel, played by James

Gleason, and Michael, played by David Josefsberg, who are there to assist when needed. But there is no doubt as to who the stage belongs to in this 21st century Biblical recitation on the Commandments. This time, stentorian-styled delivery is replaced with a laid-back GOD figure who dispenses his re-explanations while reclining on a large, elevated, white sofa, spiced with the vernacular of today. His dialogue with the audience has bite and comedy-style worthy of some of today’s best stand-up comedians. As a cautionary note: One should be prepared to hear the content of the commandments explained by Hayes to be not quite as verbatim as you remember when you were learning how to conduct yourself under the rules of a polite and civilized society. Thanks to Javerbaum’s script, the production is replete with topical references to Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, and the 2016 Presidential Debates. GOD’s chit-chat monologues to the audience sound a little odd coming from the Big Kahuna, but it is after all a comedy. Style and delivery are the virtues of this production.

Sean Hayes and David Josefsberg in “An Act of God,” written by God, transcribed by David Javerbaum and directed by Joe Mantello. Photo by Craig Schwartz Content reveals that no new ground is being broken here from director Montello and Javerbaum except to have the Biblical commandments re-explained for millennials in the vernacular they so enjoy. I found the show, which is performed without an intermission, to be an amusing comedy, yes, but not what the New York critics and hype claimed it to be. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed Sean Hayes’ winning performance. If one judges by audience reaction and involvement, then the opening night audience loved it. On exiting the theatre I had a chance to ask two middle-

aged women if they liked the show. “Yes. It was very funny and entertaining” they said. Pressing the issue, I then asked would you say that more women were laughing than men? Both replied, “I think it was about 50-50”. I estimate the divide to be more like 70 female, 30 male. Alas, the battle of the sexes apparently still rages. For me, I’m afraid, it’s a bit like pouring old wine into a new bottle. The Ahmanson Theatre is a large venue: 2000 seats. For a three character play, the players can get swallowed up the vastness of the house and stage space. Perhaps, a smaller performance

space like the Taper would have been a better fit. The technical credits at the Ahmanson for “An Act of God” are first rate. The creative team led by director Mantello include: Scott Pask as Scenic designer, Costumes designed by David Zinn, Lighting designs by Hugh Vanstone, Sound design by Fitz Patton, Music by Adam Schlesinger, Projection designer Peter Nigrini, Illusion consultant Paul Kieve, and special effects designed by Gregory Meeh. “An Act of GOD” performs at the Ahmanson Theatre in LA and runs through March 13, 2016.
