Obama Comes to Town Obama spends Presidents Day in Valley Golfing at Sunnylands Report and Photos by Pat Krause President Obama made another visit to our beautiful valley. This visit was not an official visit, but I understand more of a vacation. It is rumored, he will be staying here to play a little golf and relax. He seemed in great spirits and was dressed casually in a white with blue stripes’ cotton shirt with rolled-

up sleeves. It is said he finished his business earlier in the week and used the weekend to just enjoy himself on this Valentines weekend. President Obama was to land on Saturday morning at 11:30 but the visit was pushed ahead of schedule, and he landed at 9:55. A busload of men, women and children was

escorted to a waiting area by the press platform. One of the men in the bus said his wife was with security, and she brought her family hoping to meet with the President. President Obama departed the plane and waved to the press and guests. He then did an unusual thing by walking across the tarmac to the waiting group of people and

Ultimate Driving Weekend

By Desert Star Staff Los Angeles, Calif. — The Petersen Automotive Museum, the stewards of automotive stories in Southern California and beyond, offers car enthusiasts a unique motorsports opportunity February 21-22 at the private Thermal Club motor sports country club near Palm Springs. The Petersen Invitational is a fund-raiser that benefits the Petersen Automotive Museum’s yearlong $120 million remodeling project. The Petersen Invitational offers driving enthusiasts an opportunity to run their own cars plus test these models on The Thermal Clubs “private

pavement”: Lotus Evora, Lexus RC, BMW M-Class, Porsche Model S and Porsche Cayman S. Rides will be available in a Lamborghini Super Trofeo; the exotic Scarbo SVF1 re-creation 1967 Ferrari 312 Formula 1 car will be on display. The weekend also includes a cocktail party and dinner honoring 1985 Indy 500 winner Danny Sullivan. Commenting on hosting the fund-raiser, Dave Jenkins, The Thermal Club’s Sales & Marketing Director, said, “The Petersen Automotive Museum has been a friend to The Thermal Club since it was just an orchard of palm trees. From our groundbreaking

to our first few laps around the tracks, they have chosen to share their confidence in our concept of a world-class club for drivers, by attending our many milemarker events along the way. We appreciate their confidence and support, and are now excited to share our new tracks, clubhouses, and thriving social scene in return. “There is no club or group more in tune in the auto world both past and present than the Petersen Automotive Museum, so we are thrilled to welcome them out for this special weekend of driving, along with celebrity Continues on Page 12

children. He shook hands and spoke to the special guests. Cell phones and cameras were held high to try to get a photo of the President close up. He smiled and talked to many in the front row of the waiting group, and he even reached to the rear to try to shake hands with people further back in the crowd. After a couple of minutes,

he waved and walked back to a waiting dark SUV. A few of the members of the press yelled his name, and he turned around and waved to the TV crews and photographers. This was more than he usually did when he landed. It was mostly a quick wave and running down the Continues on Page 7

d n e E k v e e nt Sum Up e W MODERNISM WEEK

Story and Photo by Pat Krause Modernism week kicked off with a Retro Party to start the festivities of the 10th year of the wildly popular Modernism Week that runs for 11 days. The party was held at the new “Camp” area that was transformed into a bright spot on Palm Canyon Drive. The area was once a dirt lot next to Copleys and was now a adorned with a immense tent and beautifully placed enormous rocks. The area was designed as a meeting place for people to discuss mid century architecture during the week. The party was held on opening night, Thursday, Feb. 12th. Guests list included almost 500 people that wanted to be part of this retro fun evening.

Many guests came in mid century vintage costumes, wild hair, beads. Poodle skirts, Bellbottom pants, and brightcolored pants and jackets that were popular in the 50s and 60s. This Throwback Thursday’s party included music to dance to by DJ Jason Bentley, who is the music director for KCRW. Music from that era had the guest’s dancing and toe tapping to that wonderful music from that time. The “Camp” will also be hosting meetings, lectures, fashion shows and of course a lot of entertainment. This brand new 30,000 square foot area will be the new headquarters and the hub for a lot of excitement during the week.

ISRAEL GUIDE DOG CENTER FOR THE BLIND Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Matthew Varon Chapter of the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind held its 5th annual Israel Guide Dog Center Luncheon at the Desert Island Country Club on Feb. Michael Rosenthal, Honoree Karen Meyer, Vicki Hobart, Helen Veron, Dana Hobart standing 11th. A shopping experience and Robin Montgomery seated was held in the reception area when the guests arrived from vendors selling purses, jewelry and clothes at reduced prices. A Raffle was held with prizes like jewels, dinners, spa packages and wines. Helen Varon chaired the luncheon with help from many committee members. The honoree of the luncheon was Karen Meyer, an Emmy winning reporter. Bracha Ben Avraham and her dog Dinka with Michael Rosenthal and Singer, Melissa Batalles Meyer was born deaf and has spent her life helping

others with a disability. Meyer was an advisor on Disabilities to President Clinton and was named in the Top 100 women in the Midwest. Her career is astonishing in spite of her disability that would have stopped most people from realizing a productive and useful life helping others. She has won many awards during her career. Bracha Ben Avraham and her dog Dinka came from Israel for this event. She flew the whole long way with her guide dog at her feet on the plane. She is another remarkable woman who has defeated her disability of blindness. Israel’s include many solders and victims of terror. Each puppy costs $25,000 to a guide

dog but can give someone’s independence and pride and a better chance at life. The Center has 500 partnerships with Guide Dogs so far and many more are needed. Entertainment was provided by Melissa Batalles with her beautiful soprano voice that had the guests in awe and many times stood to give her a standing ovation. Melissa asked the guests to sing along with her in a couple of well known songs. She sang selections from Opera to Broadway and the American Songbook of tunes. Dan McGrath served as Emcee with his usual flair. Beautiful centerpieces were donated by Lori Sarner.

THE OPERA ARTS Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Opera Arts presented its annual gala. The theme, When I Rise III, honored Olympic gold-medal winner Greg Louganis. Louganis is one of the most recognized Olympians as he is the most decorated Olympian Medalist Diver of this generation. Mayor Steve Pougnet read a proclamation claiming Feb. 15th to be Greg Louganis Day. Louganis was given more proclamations by others in the Valley, and Greg was presented a statue from Angela Blasi. The, When I Rise, was created to recognize someone who has overcome many obstacles and risen above them to be an outstanding citizen in all walks of life. Louganis achieved all that and became the Olympic GoldMedal winner in diving in 1984 and 1988. Louganis accepted his

award and spoke to the crowd about his unsettling youth. He battled stuttering, bullying and depression. He said he had thought about suicide as a teenage but decided that he could find a better use for his life. He was only 16 when he competed in his first Olympics. He made big news when he hit his head on the diving board and announced he was HIV positive. Since then he has spent his life bringing awareness about HIV and AIDS. He also became an author when he wrote his life story in, Breaking the Surface, which also became a movie. Opera lovers who came to the gala were treated to the fabulous voices of Roberto Perlas Gomez and H. Waring Sharpe. Victoria accompanied them on the piano Kirsch, who is the director of Opera Arts. The musical program included the voices of a tenor

and baritone singing songs from various well-known operas. They also sang “Some Enchanted Evening” from the play, South Pacific, and “It Ain’t Necessarily So” from, Porgy and Bess, Victoria told the story of each song, and the two men performed duets and also performed individually. The event was chaired by Arlene Rosenthal and Joe Giarrusso and was held at the Hard-Rock Hotel.

Pivotal Points – the Most Historical in U.S. History

By Janice Gough The most remembered financial disaster of all time was the crash of the Stock market on October 24th, 1929. The crash

caused suicides, killings, and reversal of fortunes. The market fell 23%. Some of the reasons for the crash may resemble the same conditions today. While there have been many suggested explanations for the Crash, no one can fully account for it. Here are some of the explanations proposed: 1. Stocks were Overpriced Many people believe that stocks were overpriced, and the crash brought the share prices back to a normal level. Price/Earning’s ratios and Price/Dividend ratios, are important considerations when owning stocks. The Value of the overall market is 23 times earnings today, meaning that for every dollar earned, the price of the stock is 23 times that amount. 2. Massive Frauds and Illegal Activity. Fraud and criminal activity will always be contributing factors of declines, but has been not been a major

the Federal Reserve has ended Quantitative Easing, and Interest rates will begin to increase, as our monetary policy tightens. 5. Public Officials’ Repeated Statements Many public officials commented that the stock prices were too high. For example, the newly elected President of the United States, Herbert Hoover, publicly stated that stocks were overvalued and that speculation hurt the economy. He wanted control over the market. These kinds of statements encouraged investors to believe that sell-off was a wise move, which could be one of the causes of the Crash. Today, “media feed” from the sources that most people rely on; (TV, newspapers, and the Internet) will always become major reasons for a crash. Biases in reporting can be related to compensation provided from the reporting agency. We all want to follow the experts. However, in doing, so we should consider

their background and reasons for their recommendations. You can find opposing views on the way; the market is headed, in any media source on the same day. Today, we have more concise information on the market where reality hits the road. We need to study market history and the causes of rapid declines, which will help us to determine how we should invest this age. Before we experience a Pivotal Point in the market, it is time to consider factors that may cause a dramatic decline and pro-actively re-act before we suffer the loss on investments.

will repel most volunteers. Many homeowners will decide that life is too short to deal with unpleasant people and will avoid your meetings (and will not volunteer). Elevate professionalism and civility in your board meetings, and consider adopting board meeting rules promoting civility and order. Fear of Liability. Volunteer directors should not fear liability, even while making important association decisions. The Business Judgment Rule, corporate process, and directors and officers errors and omissions insurance all provide protection to volunteer directors. As a director, your role is to direct – to make decisions. Leave the actions and recommendations to your manager and consultants. Continually train your directors on these important protections. The Dictator. Volunteers may be hard to find in HOAs ruled by presidents who view themselves as the HOA’s boss, making all the decisions and discouraging differing points of view. Homeowner association

presidents have far less power than presidents of forprofit corporations, and must remember that the association acts through the board, not the president. Presidents which inhibit reasonable discussion and persist in making decisions without board votes are disrespecting the role of the other directors. Boards should appoint presidents who will be a leader – not the boss. Lack of Communication. Some associations suffer from poor member participation because members have no idea what their board is doing. Posting minutes is helpful, but find additional methods to keep your neighbors informed about the goings-on in their association. Better communication leads to greater confidence in association governance, and consequently a greater willingness to volunteer. Major Projects. It is difficult to find volunteers in the midst of a major renovation or repair, governing document overhaul, or even lawsuit. If the association is contemplating a major project,

the time to find volunteers is before the project begins, not after. Overly Large Board. Some boards are unnecessarily large for the association. For example, does a 25 unit association need 5 directors, 20% of the entire membership? A three member board is adequate. Smaller associations may be fine with three directors, and many associations up to one thousand members can run well with 5 or at most 7 directors. Ask the members to vote to approve a bylaw amendment shrinking the board to a more manageable size.

factor. We all know the stories of Bernie Madoff, manipulation of the LIBOR intra day trading rates and bond pricing manipulation. 3. Margin Buying Margin buying is another scapegoat for the cause of the 1929 crash. In actuality, margin on stocks (loans against the value) was not that high in 1929 but brought out a strong impact on those with them. Whether we take loans on stock or take on too much debt based on income that we cannot count on, it may cause a major downturn. The market slide of 2008 was caused by housing margins (variable interest rates), and the Margins on stock were very high in the crash of 2000 causing the roll downward. 4. Federal Reserve Policy In 1929, the new President of the Federal Reserve Board tightened the monetary policy and set out to lower the stock prices since he perceived that speculation led stocks to be overpriced. Today,

At any given time, several of my client associations have empty seats they cannot seem to fill. A number of factors can cause difficulty in filling board vacancies. Volunteer Managers. Do you or some of your board colleagues spend many hours each week on HOA business, inspecting the property, observing vendors providing service, and otherwise dealing with the HOA’s daily matters? The well-intentioned sacrifice of your time and energy may be deterring others from board service. You may be retired or have the energy to spend 20-30 hours each week on association matters, but your neighbors don’t – and they are frightened of that level of commitment. If your HOA has a manager, let the manager manage – or hire a better one. If it does not have a manager, hire one. John R. Coleman a Muralist for Desert Hot Springs By Carolyn W. Gaines I met the painting, muralist at the Starbuck coffee house, and we had a real chat about his career. Mr. John R. Coleman has a spirit of a goal mine a bucket filled with painting skills. He told me his 20 years of painting has been a joy. He began painting in Reno, Nevada. I asked him did he go to school for painting his many compositions. Coleman mentions, he was mostly selftaught. He has become a wellknown great muralist in DHS. I asked him which mural did he like best of his work. He stated the one called ‘Family’ that Mr. Landon Johnson contributed to the landscape. DHS community wants to

know how long the ‘Family’ mural took for completion. John said,’ three-weeks’’. John talked about his main mission is to beautify the city, share his painting talents, and maybe bring some tourist to Desert Hot Springs. I knew the mural ‘Family’ is by a middle school, so we talked about students watching his work, and He discussed that he contacted the school, and the art teacher walked over 5 art classes to watch him paint the muralist ‘Family’. What message can you send for the children who want to be a muralist? Short and a perfect get away to answer: “Never give up on your dreams and follow your dreams.”

Dark Drama Onstage at Groves Cabin Theatre

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Nobody wrote plays and dialogue for women of the American south better than the great Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Tennessee Williams. As a southerner and a writer, he understood their idiosyncrasies, their strengths, their weaknesses, their quirks, and the nature of the female characters he created. And he created some great plays and roles for his women of the south. “The Glass Menagerie” is considered one of the finest three plays ever written by an American author. “Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman”, and Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey into Night” being the other two. Williams’ “Streetcar Named Desire” contains many, now

iconic, lines of dialogue such as Blanche Du Bois’s speech about ‘relying on the kindness of strangers’ and the screed ‘Stella’ by the brutish Stanley Kawowlski, her brother-in-law in the play. “Suddenly Last Summer”, currently on stage at the Groves Cabin Theatre, in Morongo Valley, is Williams in his middle period: after “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1955) and before “Night of the Iguana” (1961. Wonderfully directed by Desert Theatre League (DTL) award winning actor and director Abe Daniels, stars Donette Swain in a triumphant portrayal as Mrs. Venable. The story, in short, deals with Catherine Holly (Analisa Pilecki), a poor relation of a prominent New Orleans family, who appears to be insane or

mentally damaged after her cousin Sebastain dies under mysterious circumstances while both were traveling in Europe. Sebastain’s possessive mother, Violet Venable (Donette Swain) is trying to obscure the truth about her son’s homosexuality and death, threatens to have Catherine lobotomized for her continuing, incoherent ramblings concerning Sebastian’s strange death. When a truth serum is administered by Dr. Cukrowicz (Scott Cutler) the traumatized Catherine reveals the gruesome story of Sebastian’s death at the hands of a group of “locals” whose sexual favors he sought, using Catherine as a lure in attracting young men. It was a ploy he used earlier when traveling with his mother. Many of Williams’ plays

incorporated elements from his own life. In real life Williams’ sister Rose was compelled to undergo a lobotomy at the insistence of their domineering mother. T h e G ro v e s C a b i n production features a cast of fine ensemble players led by Vicki Montgomery as Mrs. Holly, the suffering mother of Catherine, Cyrus Short as the greedy and selfish George Holly, Joy Groves as Sister Felicity, and Lauren Gentry as Miss Foxhill. The production boasts two lengthy monologues from Swain and Pilecki that stand out for their intensity and passion. The Set Design by Steve Pratt is clever in making maximum use of a small and finite stage area. The garden area with its tropical setting painted on the walls,

and the real pebble walkway from garden to the house is a nice touch. Light and Sound designer Darin Eldridge also provides some nice lighting touches. The Groves is the most intimate of theatre venues in the entire Coachella Valley with only twenty-two seats. It almost makes the audience part of the company of actors. If you like to view the onstage action up close and (almost) personal, you’ll love your evening of theatre at the Groves. “Suddenly Last Summer” performs Saturdays at 7 pm and Sundays at 2:30 PM through March 15, 2015. Reservations are a must! Call the box office at 760-365-4523.

Democrats seek Relief from Health law Penalties

By Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) - The official sign-up season for President Barack Obama’s health care law may be over, but leading congressional Democrats say millions of Americans facing new tax penalties deserve a second chance. Three senior House members strongly urged the administration Monday to grant a special sign-up opportunity for uninsured taxpayers who will be facing fines under the law for the first time this year. The three are Michigan’s Sander Levin, the ranking Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, and Democratic Reps. Jim McDermott of Washington, and Lloyd Doggett of Texas. All worked to help steer Obama’s law through rancorous congressional debates from 2009-2010. The lawmakers say they are concerned that many of their constituents will find out about the penalties after it’s already too late for them to sign up for coverage, since open enrollment ended Sunday. That means they could wind

up uninsured for another year, only to owe substantially higher fines in 2016. The fines are collected through the income tax system. “For the many families who may now be about to pay a penalty, there should be an opportunity to avoid both further penalties and to obtain affordable health insurance,” said Doggett. This year is the first time ordinary Americans will experience the complicated interactions between the health care law and taxes. Based on congressional analysis, tax preparation giant H&R Block says roughly 4 million uninsured people will pay penalties. The IRS has warned that health-care related issues will make its job harder this filing season and taxpayers should be prepared for long call-center hold times, particularly since the GOP-led Congress has been loath to approve more money for the agency. “Open enrollment period ended before many Americans filed their taxes,” the three lawmakers said in a statement. “Without a special enrollment period, many people (who will be paying fines) will not have

By Angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS -- There are many events in the valley this weekend. As many as 10,000 cyclists hit valley roads Saturday morning for the Tour de Palm Springs. The 17th annual Tour de Palm Springs included the a 100-mile ``Escape the City Lights Ride,’’ followed by five other bicycle and walking events. Downtown streets did shut down for the ride, and a vendor expo that began Friday afternoon. More than 100 Coachella Valley non-profit organizations benefit from funds raised by the

Tour de Palm Springs. All roads are now open in downtown Palm Springs. There’s plenty to do this Valentine’s Day in the valley, including browsing artwork in Palm Springs. The Desert Arts Festival is being held at Frances Stevens Park through Sunday. 100 artists are presenting their original work including three-dimensional fine art, paintings, photography and sculpture. another opportunity to get health coverage this year. “A special enrollment period will not only help many Americans avoid making an even larger payment next year, but, more importantly, it will help them gain quality health insurance for 2015,” the lawmakers added. So far, administration officials have deflected questions about whether an extension will be granted. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell has authority to grant special enrollment periods under certain circumstances. Supporters of the law say an extension would mainly help low- to middle-income uninsured people, the same group that Obama’s coverage expansion was intended to serve. But Republicans may criticize it as another tweak to what they see as unworkable “Obamacare.” The health care law imposes fines on uninsured people whose incomes are deemed high enough to enable them to afford coverage. The goal is to broaden the pool of insured people, helping to keep premiums in check for everybody.

The law also offers subsidies to lower the cost of private coverage for people who don’t have job-based health care. That financial assistance is provided through a new tax credit. Although the tax credit subsidies cover most of the premiums for many people, the coverage requirement and the fines that enforce it remain deeply unpopular. And the cost of being uninsured in America is going up significantly. For 2014, the fine was the greater of $95 per person or 1 percent of household income above the threshold for filing taxes. That fine will be collected when taxpayers file their 2014 returns. But this year the fine will jump to the greater of 2 percent of income or $325. By 2016, the average fine will be about $1,100, based on government figures. Polls show that many taxpayers are unaware of the potential financial exposure. Floyd Cable, a real estate agent from Wichita Falls, Texas, said the escalating fines were part of the motivation for him and his wife to sign up last

week. Both are self-employed, and stretching to pay health insurance premiums has been a struggle. “We have been going without insurance the last couple of years just because the rates are so astronomical,” Cable said. But they were also concerned they could wind up on the wrong side of rising penalties. And, being in his early 60s, Cable said he recognizes the value of having health insurance against unexpected illness. An extension would probably help people still on the fence, like he was. “Anything that could be done to give people more time to sort through this, is not only a good move for the administration, but just makes common sense,” Cable said. Since both the subsidies and penalties under the health law are administered through the tax system, some experts have urged the Obama administration to permanently schedule signup season to overlap with taxfiling season. President Leaves Palm Springs for Washington, D.C.

By Angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS -- The President of the United States returns to Washington, D.C., and the frigid cold gripping the East Coast after enjoying a warm weekend of golf and sun here in the valley. How appropriate that President’s day in the valley meant having the President right here with us for his fourth visit to our valley in two years. President Barack Obama spent much of his time golfing in Rancho Mirage, but he also did some work signing off on new rules guiding commercial drones in the U.S. Traffic stopped along Gene Autry Trail in Palm Springs as the motorcade escorted the President to the airport Monday afternoon. It was a quick goodbye as the President left the SUV, and jogged up the stairs giving us a quick wave goodbye at the top as he returned to Washington, D.C. It was wheels up at 1:46pm Monday. The President arrived Saturday morning after visiting Stanford University on Friday.

Then, President Obama headed to Sunnylands Estate in Rancho Mirage for a round of golf with his longtime friends. The President stayed at a private home in Thunderbird Heights.

On Sunday, it was more golf with friends, this time at billionaire Larry Ellison’s Porcupine Creek Golf Course. While in the desert, the President also reportedly worked on preparations for a summit meeting on international terrorism. President Obama’s first visit here was in June 2013, where he

met with the President of China at Sunnylands. His next visit was over President’s Day weekend last year, when he met with the King of Jordan. Last Father’s Day, the President and his family visited the valley for a vacation. Source KMIR

Cranfill wed Silva and Ivy Koryne Smith, 19, of Powell in a Cody courtroom last week. “There will be no, ‘You can kiss the bride,’ or whatever they say when people get married,” Silva’s defense attorney, Sarah Miles, said before her client’s impromptu wedding on Feb. 11 in Park County’s District Court.

Smith stayed 15 feet away from Silva to comply with the jail’s “no contact” rules, the Powell Tribune (http://bit.ly/1AB5rKQ) reported. The ceremony lasted for about a minute, and the judge directed them to take their seats for Silva’s sentencing hearing. Cranfill sentenced Silva to six to 10 years in prison for a drunken crime spree in which he stole and crashed two pickup trucks, used a gun he found in one of the pickups to fire shots at other vehicles in Powell and led officers on a chase that reached speeds of up to 110 mph. The chase ended when Silva ran over irrigation pipe and got stuck in a muddy barley field.

At the time, Silva was free on bond on a misdemeanor charge. Silva pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary, property destruction and a third conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol. Other charges were dismissed. Silva disputes the county attorney’s arguments that he owes nearly $46,000 in restitution for damage to the vehicles. A restitution hearing will be held later. Silva has been jailed since his arrest on Aug. 24, and he will be given credit for the six months he has already served. Information from: Powell (Wyo.) Tribune, http://www. powelltribune.com

Charisma, Creativity and Class at The Palm Springs Fine Art Fair

Arielle Schnitzer with Arlene and Jordan Photo by Pat Krause

By Pam Price The 4th Annual Palm Springs Art Fair, Feb. 12-15 at the Palm Springs Convention Center exhibited art from 66 galleries representing 33 cities and 7 countries, reported Rick Friedman, the event’s Executive Director. The Opening-Night Preview recognized Arlene Schnitzer as the Arts Patron of Year. Mrs. Schnitzer, the founder of the first contemporary art gallery in Portland, OR is recognized as one of the leading philanthropists and art patrons on the West Coast. Bruce Guenther, author and curator interviewed her with opening remarks by Steve Biller. The following day, Jordan M. Schnitzer, her son,

known as the Prince of Prints for his extensive print collection archived at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR he discussed how he established this world-class art museum and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation Lending Program reaching out to museums around the world. Art fans perusing the eclectic exhibits at the Opening-Night Preview were mesmerized by dramatic installations such as (Not Quite ) Salvation by Cindy Jackson, a theatrical, larger than life set of six kneeling men, each on their “own search for salvation.” Fanning out from this centerpiece was surprises

Jim Cox, chairman of the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission was fascinated by the optical illusion of Chul Hyan Ahn’s Railroad Nostalgia a composition of plywood, LED lights, mirrors and railroad tracks from C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore. MD. The sensitive portraits at Ryan Martin New Portraiture charmed the desert’s creative couple, ballerina Valerie Mahabir and world-renowned architect Nerandra Patel. Dimitri Halkidis, owner of Gallery 446 in Palm Springs visited the black-and-white Robert

The Cathedral City Public Art Commission tried to keep their group together, but the six commissioners kept wandering off in different directions. Thanks to Commissioner Greg Murphy who broke out in an unexpected high-pitched whistle the group was reunited in time to finish their official tour. The education component of the Special Events menu was diverse from “The Modern Collector” panel presented by Sotheby’s Institute of Art to “Hard Edge. Living-Keeping Cool in the Desert” moderated by Peter Frank in collaboration with Palm Springs Modernism Week. “The diversity and drama of this year’s

Art Fair was impressive,” said Grace Robbins, author. You can really walk your feet off! The VIP lounge was a welcome respite because you could walk miles, but it’s not possible to see it all in two hours. I could have spent all night at The Fine Art Fair; the range of art and sculpture was dramatic and sometimes controversial. It takes time to process; every year presents new concepts. This year arriving guests met glazed ceramics from Jun Kaneko in the Front Lobby. They were inspired by the legends of Japanese Tanuki figures in an array of colors. What a surprising but apropos welcome this was for everyone!”

‘100 Miles To Lordsburg’ Scene Filmed on Palm Drive

Martha (La Trice Harper), Producer Brad Littlefield and Jack (Brian Mason) By Carolyn W. Gaines On a Saturday afternoon, I went to the UPS Store located on Palm Drive to my left a film crew shooting a movie called ‘Green Book’ about the restricted 1950s and 1960’s travels of African Americans due to racism. The Star Lite Motel had a green 2-door Sedan, 1959 Plymouth the kind of vehicle that 2015 Grammy Award ‘Life Time Achievement’ blues, superstar Buddy Guy owes. Mr. Littlefield asked me to interview his star ‘La Trice Harper’ a very graceful, admirableactress known for ‘Murder 101’ and ‘Game Over’. I informed, Mr. Littlefield that I didn’t have any paper or pen. The Open Range Pictures, producer immediately gave me my working materials. I

sat on his movie set, and I began to write history. Let’s Chat with La Trice Harper a movie star on Palm Drive in the community of DHS. Who is your character? La Trice said,”Jackson’s wife, we are on the road trying to get to California. Eight months pregnant and experiencing labor pains and most likely going into labor.” What were some of the African Americans traveling concerns during the 1950s and 1960s? The Movie Star said,” There were numerous Africans Americans in the late 50’s early 60s that were just finding out they could travel. Because we couldn’t travel, and it was during the times of ‘Jim Crows Laws’

segregation was very strong during that time: Mr. Green (Victor H. Green) was a postal worker saved thousands of people from being lynched. ‘Green Book” a trip guide listed places where we can stop for lodging, stores, and any kind of road services for African Americans: where they can hope receive safe service in a secure environment.” What can you say about the children of today about travel conditions in the 1950s and 1960s? Starlet said,” We come so far, but we have so far to go to be graceful because our grandparents had to go through: feeling of graceful and remember what the past was like and continue to make everything graceful for everyone.”

How could the color people managed to keep themselves together in the 1950s and 1960s? La Trice said,’’ people survived on faith. I wasn’t taught about the Green Book. It was important to know about the Green Book.” The ‘Green Book’ movie producer Brad said, “ESSO was the first gas-station chain to sponsor the Green Book for African Americans traveling to work and driving across the United States.’’ Finally, I learned about the ‘Green Book’ history by walking to a movie set not knowing that I was going to seek a Black

History Month lesson from a Hollywood producer and a movie star. I learned the Green Book was a road map to safety. Meanwhile, I am getting geared up for a Desert Hot Springs-A Better Day For Blues! That, I will teach adults, and children about Leadbelly, Blind lemon Jefferson, Lonnie Johnson, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Buddy Guy, Grady Gaines, Billie Holiday, B.B. King, and Roy Gaines, whom all experienced the ‘Green Book’ real-life memories from traveling to gigs on the roads by cars in 1900s through 1950s, and 1960s.

Ceremony at the brand new state-of-the-art facility located at 32-505 Harry Oliver Trail. The event will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 9:00 A.M. SunLine Transit Agency Chairman

of the Board, Greg Pettis will be joined by SunLine CEO/General Manager, Lauren Skiver, Board Members, city representatives, and other prominent local officials, for the celebration. The building was designed by the IBI Group, built by Doug Wall Construction, Arcadis served as the Construction Manager and Geocon was retained to perform soil testing and inspection. The Le Flore Group served as Project Manager. The 25,000 square-foot Administration Building and Transit Hub was completed in December of 2014. The project provided much needed employment opportunities to the Coachella Valley. SunLine Transit Agency, a Joint Powers Authority formed in 1977 to operate the Coachella Valley’s public transportation system, operated out of the City of Palm Springs’ corporation yard for eight years. The Agency then acquired land in Thousand Palms and in 1985 and moved into used trailers. In 2006, with

the trailers coming to the end of their useful life, the Board of Directors approved the budget to begin environmental, engineering and architectural services, as well as develop a Master Plan for a new Administrative Building. SunLine obtained funding from California Proposition 1B and the Federal Transit Administration. On February 26, 2013, SunLine celebrated the groundbreaking of their new Administration Building. SunLine Transit Agency CEO/ General Manager, Lauren Skiver proudly states, “The SunLine Board and I are extremely pleased to have partnered with Doug Wall Construction for our new Administration Building. SunLine focused on creating a “green” building, supporting the Agency’s vision and focus on our environment. Also, by using local firms, we created local jobs. FILM

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

Going for the Oscar Gold This Sunday, February 22, is a big day for film fans. It’s Oscar Sunday. Eight films are in contention for the golden statuette, and this category leaves me guessing. However, I feel more secure in predicting who I think will win in the top acting categories. I base my predictions not only on my hunches, but on the actors who have previously won top awards from critics, unions and guilds. Therefore, since Julianne Moore, star of “Still Alice,” has already received a Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA and Critics Choice Award for her excellent performance, I am certain she will also garner an Oscar. In the supporting actor race, I as well feel secure in predicting that the Oscar will go to J.K. Simmons for his electrifying performance in “Whiplash” since he too has won a Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA Award. Using this same formula, Eddie Redmayne will win as the best actor for his sensitive, moving

J.K. Simmons in Whiplash portrayal as Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything.” And if you haven’t seen this Oscarnominated film in theaters, it will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on February 17. The eight films vying for Oscar’s gold are: “Boyhood,” “Imitation Game,” “The Theory of Everything,” “Foxcatcher,” “Birdman,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “American Sniper” and “Whiplash” which will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD February 24. My crystal ball is a bit cloudy on this one, but I will venture to say that “Boyhood” and its director, Richard Linklater, will come out on top since the film has received a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and countless accolades from critics. While Clint Eastwood’s film “American Sniper” was nominated, he did not receive a directorial nomination. Considered a war movie and an anti-war film www.desertstarweekly.com

Everyone who loves a good movie, or even a bad one, is familiar with the name Roger Ebert. He was passionate about movies and perhaps the only thing Roger loved more than movies was his wife, Chaz. “Life Itself” which is the title of a film about this well-known movie critic, debuted on DVD on February 17. Iconic filmmakers, including Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese (“The Departed,” “Goodfellow”) and Werner Herzog (“Grizzly Man,” “Encounters at the End of the World”) joins Ebert’s widow Chaz in a touching celebration of the life of this Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic and social commentator. Based on Ebert’s best selling memoir, “Life Itself,” the film is not only personal and funny, but painful and illuminating as well. He was a film critic at the “Chicago Sun-Times” who also hosted a weekly TV show with his partner Gene Siskel, and his lively wit and insights are missed, but not forgotten. “The New York Times” described the film, directed by Steve James (“Hoop Dreams”), as “a work of deftness and delicacy, by turns a film about illness and death, about writing about cinema, and finally and very movingly, a film about love.”

Are Ducks at Civic Center Park Sick?

By Angela Monroe PALM DESERT -- Civic Center Park in Palm Desert is filled with ducks and lots of them, but some residents are worried they are sick. A Palm Desert mother told us she brings her daughters to the park to feed the ducks, and has noticed some issues. Jacquelyn of Palm Desert asks, “...we have noticed some of the birds have what appears to be rashes or lesions around their faces and wings...they also seem to have trouble breathing and almost seem to be coughing... our question is what is wrong with these poor animals and what can be done to help them? There is a broad variety of ducks at Civic Center Park.

While the city tells me they haven’t received concerns about the ducks being ill -- there is a type of duck here whose appearance does fit the bill. There’s something very relaxing about going to the park, buying some food and feeding the ducks. “It’s great, they have the little things that you can feed the ducks and stuff, and my kids just love coming out here and being in the sun, and sitting by the water with the ducks, said Palm Desert resident, Jennifer Foreman. Some people are worried about the health of the foul here at Civic Center Park. “I haven’t seen rashes, lesions, panting, but I have

seem little limps sometimes on their little feet, on some of them, this isn’t like on all of them at all, said Palm Desert resident, Rachel Easterly. City of Palm Desert employees say it may be the breed of ducks that is throwing people off. “They all seem pretty fat, and pretty happy, I saw one that I thought was maybe a little different about it, but I’ve been told it really is healthy, said Rancho Mirage resident, Brenda Ranney. Muscovy are large ducks that can wag their tails as they waddle, have pink or red wattles around their bills and make rather breathy quacks. “I couldn’t tell if it was a

combination turkey, vulture, goose, it looked like it may be a combination of those three, said Lisa Phelan of Palm Desert. Muscovy are not a native species to the desert. Over at the Coachella Valley Wild Bird Center in Indio, Linda York tells us a big problem is that people are dumping domestic ducks at the park. Who is responsible for the ducks isn’t clear, “It’s one of those gray areas, no one really wants to take responsibility for it because once again what is animal control going to do with them, it’s a dilemma and part of that is responsibility of the public to not dump them, said Linda York, the executive director of the Coachella Valley Wild Bird Center.

The population of ducks has increased over the years at the park. “When there’s so many of them, and people feed them, and I hate to stay it, but stupid stuff, bread and things like that, they’re not healthy, and so they end up getting sick, said York. We also called the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to ask them about the ducks, but they didn’t call us back. The city of Palm Desert said they installed feeders so that people will give the ducks the right food, and also to try to keep the population smaller in Civic Center Park. Source KMIR

Bundle up, New Orleans: Mardi Gras is Cold By Janet Mcconnaughey Associated Press NEW ORLEANS (AP) - If there was a theme for this year’s Mardi Gras costumes in New Orleans, it was ‘Brrrrr.’ With temperatures near freezing, almost everyone was bundled up. Some costumes were no more than a fake-fur hat topped with animal ears. The crowd was thick along St. Charles Avenue, where the route of Zulu, the day’s first big parade, merged with that of Rex, one of the most elaborate. Rex was followed by two long “truck parades” - floats built up from flatbed trailers and decorated by costumed riders. A 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman fell from different floats in a truck parade Tuesday in suburban Metairie, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said. The man was in stable condition and the woman was expected to be treated and released, said Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the sheriff. Matching gray quilted jackets hid the gowns worn by young women on the “maids” float in the Zulu Social Aid and

Pleasure Club’s popular parade. As Zulu passed, Ashley English said she was too cold to show off her costume. “I have a corset on. You just can’t see it,” she said, pulling at the neck of her leather jacket. The corset was purple, she said, to go with her green and gold leggings. Purple, green and gold were introduced as the colors of Mardi Gras in 1872, when a group of businessmen first crowned one of their own “Rex, king of Carnival.” English’s friend, Jon Farkas, wore a hat fashioned like a white, big-billed bird, its long, yellow legs dangling in front of his shoulders. “It’s supposed to be a pelican,” he said. Because of the cold weather, tutus were worn over jeans and many costumes, such as clowns or animals, were baggy enough to cover sweat shirts. Erin Buran of New Orleans wore a white jacket and feathery angel wings. “My angel wings have tequila in them,” she said, showing the mouthpiece of a hydration backpack covered by the wings. She said she

lost her halo Sunday. Just down a side street, a man was collecting admission outside a plywood cubicle labeled “BATHROOM.” He and others at an RV repair shop had made a portable toilet of plywood, plastic buckets, and frequently changed plastic bags, which went into a nearby trash bin. It was $2 for men, $3 for women - or $10 and

$12 for an all-day pass. Why more for women? Toilet paper costs more money. On Lee Circle, Wayne Encalarde sat in a pickup truck with a commercial portable toilet tied down in the bed. A big orange parking ticket was stuck behind one windshield wiper. He said he parks there and is ticketed every Mardi Gras. “It’s worth it to have a

bathroom for the kids,” he said. Partway down Zulu’s route along Jackson Avenue, contractor Mike Cochran and several younger men were giving away gumbo from the parking lot of a building under renovation. “Our main purpose - other than feeding the multitudes - is making sure nobody climbs the scaffold,” he said. By Jay Reeves Associated Press BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley apologized to the Indian government for the treatment of an Indian man who was roughed-up by police, calling the case one of “excessive force” in a letter made public Tuesday. Bentley’s office released a letter to Indian general consul Ajit Kumar a day after the two men met to discuss the case involving 57-year-old Sureshbhai Patel (suh-RESH’-beye pah-TEL’), who was hurt in a confrontation

with Madison police while visiting relatives earlier this month. Audio and video recordings released by police show Patel was slammed face-first to the ground by an officer responding to a call about someone walking in a subdivision in the town, a bedroom community of Huntsville. Patel suffered injuries including partial paralysis in his legs, and his attorney said he now is in rehabilitation after leaving a hospital Monday. The man has filed a federal lawsuit over his treatment.

The governor’s letter expressed Bentley’s “sincere apology for this tragic incident to your government, Mr. Patel, and the citizens of India who reside and work in our state.” “I deep regret the unfortunate use of excessive force by the Madison Police Department ... and for the injuries sustained by Mr. Patel,” wrote Bentley. The Madison police chief apologized during a news conference last week. Bentley said the state would investigate the confrontation alongside the FBI.

Bentley’s letter came as officer Eric Parker pleaded not guilty to assaulting Patel during a confrontation in the north Alabama city on Feb. 6. Parker is being fired, and he faces an April 29 trial. An attorney for Parker, Robert Tuten, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment about Bentley’s letter. A lawyer for Patel, Hank Sherrod, said the man has left the hospital and is now in rehabilitation for injuries that

include partial paralysis of his left leg. “He has a long, difficult, and uncertain rehabilitation process ahead of him, and he and his family deeply appreciate the outpouring of prayers and support he has received,” Sherrod said in an email. Donors have given about $185,000 on a gofundme.com to pay medical expenses for Patel, who Sherrod said does not have insurance. Source KMIR

WILL SELL AT PUBLIC AUCTION TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER FOR CASH (payable in full at time of sale by cash, a cashier’s check drawn by a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association, or savings bank specified in section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state). At the front steps to the entrance of the former Corona Police Department, at 849 W. Sixth Street Corona, CA all right, title and interest conveyed to and now held by it under said Deed of Trust in the property situated in said County and state, and as more fully described in the above referenced Deed of Trust. The street address and other common designation, if any, of the real property described above is purported to be: 76143 VIA MONTELENA, INDIAN WELLS, CA 92210 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. Said sale will be made in an “AS IS” condition, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by said Deed of Trust, with interest thereon, as provided in said note(s), advances, if any, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, estimated fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust, to-wit: $1,258,175.35 (Estimated). Accrued interest and additional advances, if any, will increase this figure prior to sale. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. From the Gulf to New England, Cold Grips the US

By Jonathan Drew And Meredith Somers Associated Press DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A powerful winter storm dumped snow from Nashville to Nantucket, and arctic-like temperatures gripped much of the U.S. and hundreds of thousands of people lost power in the South. While some shivered, others bundled up and tried to make the best of a frustrating situation. Here’s a look at how people were handling the land of ice, snow and subzero temperatures. COLD CARNIVAL: If there was a theme for this year’s Mardi Gras costumes in New Orleans, it was ‘Brrrrr.’ Despite the chilly temperatures, the crowds were thick. Tutus were worn over jeans and many costumes, such as clowns or animals, were baggy enough to cover sweat shirts. Erin Buran, of New Orleans, wore a white jacket and feathery angel wings. “My angel wings have tequila in them, she said, showing the mouthpiece of a hydration backpack covered by the wings. ROOF WORRIES: Massachusetts officials stepped up warnings about the potential for roofs to collapse under the weight of snow that has built up in recent weeks. Numerous partial roof collapses have been reported in the state but no serious injuries to date. Two New Hampshire school districts remain closed a day after schools were evacuated over concerns of snow buildup on roofs. ICE BABY: Some things just won’t wait, as Jerry Nuesell can attest. With his wife 33 weeks pregnant, the couple was headed to the doctor’s office when Lisa’s contractions led them to UNC Hospitals for the arrival of their first born, a boy. “Turned out the little fellow was ready to make an appearance much sooner than we planned, Nuesell said Tuesday. He watched his son be born, then drove 30 miles back to Cary, North Carolina, to take care of their dachshund, Schnitzel. Ice covered most of his windshield and the drive wasn’t easy. “I had probably a good 6-inch-by-6-inch square that I had to peer through to get the

best vision, he said. “On multiple occasions, I thought this might not be the best idea. SURRENDER TO THE SNOW: The tourism office of Ithaca, New York, is waving the white flag, advising visitors on its website to check out the Florida Keys instead. VisitIthaca.com’s home page displays sunny photos from Florida and provides links to Florida Keys information. The top of the page reads: “That’s it. We surrender. Winter, you win. Key West anyone? Ithaca and the rest of upstate New York have been in the grips of a snowy and brutally cold winter. ICY ROADS: Roads were icy and slushy, making driving difficult in many places and causing at least seven traffic deaths. There were three deaths in Tennessee, including a mother and son in Williamson County who stopped to help people in a sport utility vehicle that overturned in front of them when they were struck by a tractor-trailer. Two people were killed in Virginia as nearly a foot of snow fell in some places. In North Carolina, a woman died in a two-car crash in the northeastern part of the state. Two people were also killed in separate crashes in Maryland. SPORTS CAR IN THE SNOW?: “I’ll just back up and fly out, is the strategy Brent Seney had for freeing his black convertible Mazda Miata from the snow in the nation’s capital Tuesday. Despite the thick blanket of snow along his street, Seney,

60, was confident his sporty ride could handle the roads. In fact, he planned to drive to his boat harbored at James Creek Marina in southwest Washington. “I’ll shovel the snow off, make sure it’s not frozen too much because the harbor is all frozen in, Seney said. TRYING TO FLY: Trudging along a snowy sidewalk, Robin Winter and her daughter, Melissa, made their way to a Metro station in Washington so Mom could catch her flight home to St. Louis. Robin Winter, carrying multiple bags and sporting a sock monkey hat, said she’d gotten into town Thursday, and had been watching the forecasts as the snow made its way across the country. “If I would have decided to fly out Sunday night instead, you never know for sure if it’s gonna really happen until it really happens, she said. The Winters were optimistic the flight would not be canceled, though they were prepared for a delay. It appeared her flight left on time, but others weren’t so lucky. More than 1,800 flights were canceled at many airports, from Nashville, Tennessee, to the nation’s capital. More than 2,000 travelers spent the night at Charlotte Douglas International Airport as a winter storm roared through North Carolina dropping snow, sleet and freezing rain on the region. SNOWBALL FIGHT: Even though the snow in D.C. wasn’t ideal for a fight, people showed up anyway, some in costumes

and battle gear. One wore a ski helmet and goggles, another had on a giraffe costume, and one wore a Captain America shirt and carried a shield. “It’s not really snowball material. You can kind of get one, but it’s a lot of squeezing, said Reco Thomas, of Alexandria, Virginia, as she tried to compact fluffy snow. Rob Grell, a George Washington University medical student dressed as Batman, carried fellow student Shaunak Mulani on his shoulders as people pelted the two of them. “This is overall just a fine time, Mulani said as he shook off snow. FIRST SHOVELER OUT: The sound of 61-year-old Joe Peldunas shoveling his driveway echoed across the otherwise quiet Marywood neighborhood in north Durham, North Carolina, around 8 a.m. Tuesday. No one else on his cul-de-sac was out, and there were few tracks in the layer of snow and ice more than a half inch thick on the road. “This snow is probably going to stick around for a few days, he said, adding that he wanted to clear his driveway as soon as possible. Indeed, forecasters warned that temperatures over the next few days wouldn’t provide much relief. TAKING IT IN STRIDE: After two hours of shoveling his steep driveway in the Cabe’s Mill subdivision of north Durham, North Carolina, 68-year-old Clay Shepherd was only halfway done. Still, he didn’t seem anywhere close to running out of energy. He was considering an afternoon hike along the nearby Eno River. “It happens to be my 68th birthday. I didn’t imagine I’d be doing this, he said, wearing a green sweater, dark jeans and a knit cap. Somers reporter from Washington. S P O RT S Boys’ Basketball: Blackhawks Win First DVL Title in School History BY DANIEL MARINELLI

Palm Desert – It was the most important Desert Valley League basketball game in La Quinta High School history and the Blackhawks played like they knew what was at stake. With the league championship up for grabs in the final game of the season last Thursday, the Blackhawks (177 overall, 10-2 DVL) marched into Palm Desert High School’s gym and defeated the defending champion Aztecs (15-11 overall, 9-3 DVL) – earning the first-ever DVL title in boys’ basketball for La Quinta High School. Heading into the game, any sensible sports mind would have pegged Palm Desert the favorite over La Quinta. The Aztecs had the big-game experience, they had the swagger of a champion and they owned the tiebreaker from defeating them once already this season in La Quinta. Additionally, the Aztecs have serious home-court advantage in their gym – a place where the Blackhawks have not won since 2008. Yet, the game was atypical for the normally disciplined Aztecs. There were poor shot attempts, sloppy passes and numerous uncharacteristic turnovers, but with all that, Palm Desert still held a two-point lead heading into the final quarter of the game. The fourth quarter was more of the same from head coach James Serven’s Aztecs. On the other side of the scorer’s table, Jared Broadhead, Kameron Dashner and the rest of the Blackhawks were about to have the one of the most memorable fourth quarters of their high school careers. La Quinta standouts Broadhead and Dasher have been first-team caliber all season, but to actually be elite means playing your best when it matters the most, and when the stakes were greatest, the Blackhawks big men put the team on their backs. “I just told (Broadhead and Dashner) a while ago, big players step up for big games,” Blackhawks head coach Jeff Hepner said. “I kind of gave them a little word at halftime and they stepped up.” Step up they did – Broadhead knocked down four

huge free throws and contributed eight points, while Dashner added six of his own in the fourth. The size and scoring was too overwhelming for the Aztecs in the game within the game that was the final eight minutes of the regular season. The Aztecs just needed to win that final quarter and the league title was in the bag, but the Blackhawks saved their best for last, outscoring the bitter rivals 18-9 down the stretch. La Quinta ended up winning the game 5750. “Hard work. Four years. When I got this class early on I knew they were something special,” Coach Hepner said. “A lot of ups and downs over the last few years and I just had a feeling about this group. They’ve battled and persevered; they deserved it – all the hours in the gym.” Dashner finished his the game with 18 points and Broadhead put in 16. Joey Fabela was the high scorer for the Aztecs, putting in 20. Anthony Murdica scored 13 in his final game against the Blackhawks. After the game, an emotional Coach Hepner very simply summed up winning the first league title in La Quinta High School history – “Most amazing feeling in the world.” In addition to the championship, the Blackhawks earned the one seed out of the DVL and will be playing the Corona-based Santiago High School Sharks (20-5 overall, 5-5 Big VIII) in the Division 1AA playoffs in La Quinta on Friday*, Feb. 20. With the loss, the Aztecs not only squandered a chance at the DVL title, but also have to settle for the DVL’s third playoff seed by virtue of second-place tie with the Palm Springs High School Indians. The Aztecs open up the Division 3AA playoffs against the El Monte High School Lions (1512 overall, 7-5 Mission Valley). Other Desert Valley League Playoff Qualifiers

In addition to the Blackhawks and Aztecs, the Desert Valley league earned three additional at-large playoff spots. Dynamic scorer John Rich led the Palm Springs Indians (186 overall, 9-3 DVL) to a secondplace finish in league this year, the team’s best finish since winning the DVL two years ago. The Palm Springs open up the Division 3AA playoffs at home game against Happy Hour 4pm -6pm the Fullerton High School Indians (11-15 overall, 7-3 Freeway). After missing the playoffs Full Service Hair Salon last season – despite owning the ELIZABETH same overall record this year – the Cathedral City High School 760-288-1397 Tues, Wed. and Thursday Lions (11-13, 5-7 DVL) clinched a in the Division 3AA playoffs. 12527 Palm Dr. Desert Hot Springs, CA 92240 spot Head coach Sky Wilson and
